Issue 1 Term IV, 2011

Academic • Christian • Caring

We welcome our new Chaplain Rev James Rogers and his family to our community. In a previous Newsletter I wrote that Rev Rogers graduated (Bachelor of Music Education, UNSW) in 1992 and spent five years teaching in Primary and Secondary schools in NSW. He undertook theological training at Moore College (Bachelor of Divinity, Diploma of Ministry) between 1998 and 2001. He acted as Assistant Minister of St John’s Anglican Church, Wilberforce between 2002 and 2006 before taking up the position of Rector at St Stephen’s Anglican Church, Lugarno. He also served as a Council member and Youth Task Force Leader of Georges River Regional Council. Rev Rogers was born in Wollongong Hospital and grew up in Warilla, attending Lake Illawarra High School. He played Group 7 Rugby League, French Horn in the Wollongong Conservatorium Youth Orchestra as well as completing a fitting and turning apprenticeship with Commonwealth Steel. He became a Christian in 1986 through the ministry of Thirroul/Austinmer Anglican Church. He is married, has four children and lists his interests as Theology, Music, Education, Leadership, Greek and Hebrew and Holidaying with family and friends. We wish him every success in his role as Chaplain and pray that God will bless his ministry at TIGS.

A Commencement Service will be held for Rev Rogers at a special Senior School Chapel to be held next Tuesday, 25 October commencing at 12.20pm. Bishop Peter Hayward will be officiating and speaking at this service. All members of our extended school family are invited to attend this special occasion. Please let us know if you are coming as this will assist us with planning. (4220 0200) Planning continues for the repair and transformation of the Library (upstairs level of the Goodhew Research Centre) so that it will better serve the learning needs of our students. The final floor plan will be on display in the Library from next week.. The construction period will be from the end of Term IV this year through to the end of Term I, 2012. Arrangements have been made for the physical Library to be temporarily relocated to the TIGS Extended room in the Junior School and Begbie in the Senior School. The virtual Library will operate normally throughout this period. The temporary closure of the physical Library marks the next stage of the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into the curriculum. During the construction period it will not be possible to continue the current practice of relocating lessons to the Library to use ICT. Moving the use of ICT for class research from the Library to classrooms is something that the School has been moving toward with the installation of the School’s wireless ICT network. From Term I 2012, each student in Years 7 to 12 will be required to have their own portable device for use in classrooms. More detailed advice about this change in practice was sent this week by mail to each family with a child enrolled in Years 7 to 12 in 2012. Information is also available through the TIGS homepage (www.tigs.nsw.edu. au – click on the ‘Technology’ tab). Information sessions are also planned for parents at the following times: Year 7, 2012, Parent Information Evening (6.00pm to 8.00pm) in IGC

Monday 24 October 2011

Afternoon meeting (4.00pm) in Library

Wednesday 26 October 2011

Evening meeting (6.00pm) in Library

Finally, it is with sadness that I report that a former teacher of the School, Ms Maria Biady passed away on Saturday 15 October. Ms Biady was employed as a teacher of English from 2003 to 2007. She was a friend of many in the School community who mourn her passing. Stephen Kinsella Headmaster

The Welcoming God In my time as a Senior Minister of a church I did a lot of thinking about the business of welcoming. I often tried to get into the skin of an “outsider” to our church in an attempt to understand what their experience of coming to our church might be like. The sorts of questions I asked myself were: Is our church easy to find? Is there sufficient signage to lead a newcomer from the car park to the pew? Is the entrance clearly marked? Do our buildings make an attractive first impression? Have we got the right people on the door to greet newcomers? What does a newcomer need to know about what we do when we gather as a church? What do they need to know during the service? Are they being adequately cared for following the service? Will they be followed up and how will this best be done? Questions such as these would often occupy my thoughts. At one level welcoming is a basic courtesy that anyone deserves. It is just plain rude not to provide an adequate welcome. But I believe there is a deeper reason why this is so. The God in whose image we are made is a welcoming God. He has revealed this to us most thoroughly through his Son Jesus. God sent Jesus into the world to pay the penalty for our sins in his death on the cross so that the barrier that stands between us and God might be done away with. As the apostle Peter puts it in 1 Peter 3.18: ‘Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.’ God is a welcoming God and that demands we be a welcoming people. All this has come to my mind because over the past week I have had the experience of being a bit of an “outsider” myself. Last Monday I started as Chaplain to the School. While I have been to the School on a couple of occasions over the past few months last week represented my first real welcome into the fullness of school life. I hope you will be interested to know how it has gone for me. In short, the experience has been overwhelmingly positive. While I have been struck by the utter beauty of the campus I have been especially taken by the warm embrace I have received from all of the staff, students and parents I have met so far. It has been quite humbling really. And it has not only been directed at me. My whole family has enjoyed a lavish welcome.

Rev James Rogers Chaplain

I want to take this opportunity to thank the School for providing such a warm welcome to us. And I want to encourage you with the reminder that in being such a welcoming community you are bearing the image of our God who is a welcoming God. And that pleases him no end. Rev James Rogers Chaplain

A Very Successful Start Welcome back to Term IV and perhaps Spring is coming now! Year 12 are well into their HSC with so many of the cohort, over 80%, having been already awarded University places and a number secure in the knowledge that they have Cadetships and Traineeships. In these straitened times to be assured of such a future is wonderful for both students and their parents. The School’s reputation and the students’ hard work have contributed to this great outcome. As Year 12 has left so the new Year 12s have taken their place. They are now in the Common Room and have settled in well to their HSC studies. The Prefects’ Induction Service last Friday saw the largest number of students ever admitted into leadership positions. This is a testament to their commitment to service leadership within and outside the School. They are an outstanding group of young people and have already made their mark at Assemblies and SRC. The Sports department announced some outstanding achievements at this week’s Assembly: Jack Millar chosen in the Junior Olympic Ski Team and James Belcher and Julien Smith gaining gold medals at the recent CIS Championships which guarantees them a place in the All Schools Championships. Also at Assembly, Simon Mill was awarded a High Distinction in The Australian Science Innovations – Rio Tinto Big Science Competition and several FPS teams were highly successful at the recent National Competitions, including the Year 7 team who are now Australian Champions and could be representing Australia in the International Competition in the U.S. Well done! So all in all, a very successful start to Term IV. Mrs Monica Watt Deputy Head and Head of Senior School

Junior School

What is the Essence of a Great School ? Last week I had the opportunity to visit schools in Papua New Guinea to complete a school inspection. My task was to evaluate the facilities, resources programs and staff at New Britain International School. It was a wonderful experience to observe teachers working in very different conditions to those we experience here at TIGS and yet to see similarities in intention and in practice. I was reminded of the essence of great schooling. Great schooling involves the underlying principles of: care for each individual, continual improvement, effort and excellent teaching practice. Imagine my delight at being asked to evaluate a great school. Imagine my further delight on reflection to be reminded of what a great school we have here in the Junior School. On returning to TIGS I have observed these principles in action in all of our classrooms, in the playground and the staffroom. Our teachers care for each individual, their social, emotional and academic growth. All of our community look to model lifelong learning and continual improvement to the children and we can see them beginning to take ownership for their learning at appropriate times. As a team we seek to reflect on our teaching practice and to be looking for ways to do our work better so that the outcomes for children can improve.

In this area it is my pleasure to share with our community that Mrs Bryant has been seconded to the Board of Studies for three weeks to assist in a final review of the new 7-10 English curriculum. This is a wonderful acknowledgement of Mrs Bryant’s expertise in this area of curriculum, expertise from which we as a community benefit greatly.

Congratulations to Emily Choy (Yr 1), Himali Wijesinghe and Nathan Troiani (Yr 6) who had art works displayed at the Operation Art 2011 exhibition being held from 10 September to 9 October 2011 at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park. Operation Art is a program which encourages young people to create artworks for children in hospital. Himali achieved an Operation ArtBank category which means her art work will be given to a regional hospital in NSW. Nathan’s piece will be photographed for the Teachers Resource CD which uses examples of Operation Art entries to illustrate the wide variety of teaching strategies across stages 1, 2 and 3. The exhibition’s opening day was launched by Premier Barry O’Farrell. Thank you to Mrs Kallinikos for her assistance to the children in creating their artworks.
