Leadership On Wednesday the names of our students leaders for 2014 were announced. Congratulations to the following students appointed to the most senior leadership positions: School Captains: Hamish Paine and Kate Martin School Vice Captains: Alexander Marzano and Emma Hatton Aranda House: Henry Hulme and Jessica Kuit Coligan: Alexander Seal and Bridget Mullany Kogara: Travys Carinci and Hannah Ainsworth Wolgal: Clement McLernon O’Donnell and Stephanie Varcoe Headmaster’s Prefect: Georgia Roberts Chapel Prefects: Elise Cannon, Lydia Irankunda and Inez Playford In total, 79 students from Year 11 have been appointed to leadership positions at various levels. A full list of students can be seen on page four.

Stephen Kinsella Headmaster

I have been asked on several occasions why we appoint so many students to leadership positions at a variety of levels. Our belief that every student has the potential to be a leader is consistent with our commitment to ‘servant leadership’ recorded in our Statement of Mission and Values: “By modelling servant leadership, promoting service and embedding the concept of stewardship in the School’s programs, students receive guidance and practical experience in living a life that is faithful to the teachings of Christ.” (2.5) The appointment of students to leadership positions is not based on popularity. While the student body is given the opportunity to express their opinion, an appointment as a student leader requires far more than just popularity with peers. The qualities considered in the appointment process are: •

Commitment to the School and its Mission and Values

Evidence of service to others

Demonstrated leadership qualities

Level of respect and support from other students and staff

The process of leadership training starts in the Junior School where students are given opportunities to learn and demonstrate leadership at an early age. Student centred learning and the problem solving challenges provided through the PYP give students many opportunities to show social and moral leadership. Current activities in the Junior School led by students that demonstrate leadership qualities include a recycling programme as well as the provision of ‘buddy’ support for our Kindergarten children. Leadership opportunities continue in the Senior School within Year groups under the leadership of Deans and Mentors. Many students use the Student Representative Council (SRC) as a means of acquiring skills and experiences in leadership. There are many informal opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate their leadership skills in Sport, Performing Arts and in Co-curricular and Extra-curricular activities. Formal training in leadership occurs at the Year 9 Leadership camp. In Year 10, students have the chance to demonstrate their leadership qualities and commitment to the School by serving as: •

Peer Readers (with students in the Junior School)

Peer Support (with students in Year 7)

Student hosts (at many School functions)

Camp Leaders (with students in Years 7 & 8)

So by the end of Year 11, students have had ample opportunity to acquire knowledge about leadership and to demonstrate their ability to serve and lead others. The challenge for staff is to match each student willing to take on the responsibility of leadership with a leadership role that matches their leadership ability, training and interest. We congratulate all our new student leaders and wish them well in their new role. The Senior School Leadership Induction Service will be held on Friday 11 October 2012.

Signs, Good and Bad In the holidays I decided to take my two boys and a newly acquired exchange student for a walk up to Sublime Point. I had never been up this mountain before and so didn’t know what to expect. I looked at the sign at the bottom which showed that a loop could be done up to Sublime Point, across to Bulli Lookout and back down to the road in Austinmer where we were starting. As I headed straight up the hill another sign warned that it was not recommended to take children up this way. I carried on regardless, believing that such signs were probably over cautious and the kids wanted a challenge anyway. We made it safely to the top and then went the extra 2km which felt like 20km through mud and jungle to Bulli Lookout. Upon arriving here I was informed that the track that led back to where we started had been closed for 10 years. My kids were too exhausted to turn around again and so I left them with some hot chips and ran the whole way back to get the car and pick them up. Needless to say I wasn’t too happy. ‘Useless sign’, I cursed, ‘why don’t they get it fixed?’ Upon reflection it seemed I was happy enough to ignore one sign but then expected another to be spot on. This attitude I had to our park signage is much the same as we carry to God’s word. I am happy to obey some signs that God has posted in his world but others I just ignore depending on whether or not they suit me. The difference between God’s law and the park signs is that God’s law never leads us astray. It is always accurate, good and guides us in the right direction. David in reflecting on God’s law says this in Psalm 19:7-9 The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes….The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous. May we remember that God’s law is there for our good and seek to put it into practice. Mark Grieve Christian Studies Teacher

Senior School

This week I am trying to write my column without ‘teacher-speak.’ Let me know if I have or have not been successful. Maybe I have inadvertently slid back to type! Educationalists tend to refer to ‘curricula,’ ‘criteria,’ ‘rubrics,’ ‘outcomes’ with quite specialist meanings in a nerdy way and often don’t recognize when the vast majority of the population collectively ‘glaze over.’ Maybe that is why politicians can so easily hijack the education agenda. So this week I thought I would write about the changes that we are currently putting in place for Years 7 – 10. As you know we are moving towards adopting the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) with Year 7 next year and then rolling through to Year 10. At the same time we will be implementing the new Australian Curriculum in English, Mathematics, Science and History.

Monica Watt

Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School

Apart from changes to the content of the courses one of the most significant changes is to the way in which we think about learning, teaching and assessment. The old model of imagining a child as an empty vessel into which we can pour knowledge has been superseded. In the IB PYP and MYP the student is seen as at the centre of the learning cycle, constructing their own understanding and their own meaning through their involvement in well-constructed programmes. Within this model and framework what then is the role of Assessment?

Assessment by teachers is the collection of information for a purpose. Teachers are looking to identify what students can already do in order to plan activities or tasks for future learning. What teachers are aiming to do is help students learn better rather than just achieve a better mark. We are aiming to encourage deeper learning and to engage and motivate students to take responsibility for their learning, to own their learning and the steps that have to be taken to improve their learning. Self-assessment and peer-assessment as well as teacher assessment will play a part in this process. These are therefore two significant aspects of teaching and learning which will guide us in planning for the future. I will inform you of some of the other changes that will take place in coming weeks. Monica Watt Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School

Junior School State Futsal Championships State Futsal Championships

The TIGS Futsal Teams (U/10 boys, U/10 girls, U/12 boys, U/12 girls) attended the NSW State Championships on Monday 5 August and Tuesday 6 August. The State Championships brings together all of the 1st and 2nd placed Regional teams. The standard of Futsal at the State Championships varied from average to excellent and the teams needed to work hard to qualify for the quarterfinals. The TIGS teams performed well and as a result all faced the challenge of the quarterfinals and the U/10 boys were unlucky to be the only TIGS teams to not make it through to the Semi - Finals. The U/12 boys played a tense Semi Final that finished in a one all draw and required a golden goal extra time, but due to no result the teams faced off in a penalty shoot out which was won by the opposing team.

Judi Nealy

The TIGS girl’s teams made it to the State Final and the U/10 girls performed admirably but were unfortunate to lose 1 – 0. However, State runner - up is a fine achievement and the girls enjoyed receiving their medals.

The U/12 Girls enjoyed receiving their medals as well, but their medals were State Champions. The pride they felt in winning was equal to the months of training they had experienced as a build up to the championships. An excellent team effort and individual brilliance brought the girls positive comments throughout the tournament from a variety of spectators. Congratulations girls. The first TIGS girls team to be honoured as NSW State Futsal Champions.

Head of Junior School

Thank you to Mark Yeo (U/12 girls), Kylie Dribbus (U/10 boys), Peter Agnew and Jane Martin (U/10 girls).

Senior School Sports NASSA FOOTBALL GALA DAY

A group of girls from Years 7/8 played in the NASSA football Gala Day. Although the girls had never played together as a team they produced some great football and created many opportunities to score. Across the park the girls played really well and it was a pleasure to coach them. Over the coming years it will be exciting to see the team grow into a competitive force.

CIS FOOTBALL SEMI FINAL

On Wednesday 7 August the Open Boys Football team travelled to Football NSW at Parklea to meet Knox Grammar School in the Semi Final of the CIS Cup Football knockout competition. It was a 5.00pm kick-off on a cold and drizzling evening. We had some regulars out with injury or illness, and some new faces in their place. But in the end none of this mattered, because the TIGS boys adapted to the conditions better, had greater composure, communicated better, and the new faces stepped up and fitted seamlessly into the squad. The Senior Girls took in a strong team to the NASSA Football Gala Day, with players from Year 9 to Year 11. There was an early setback however with the team captain, Kaitlyn Matias, suffering an ankle injury in the first minute of the first game. The girls lifted however, and played brilliantly to beat the formidable Penrith Anglican College 1-0. The next game against Macarthur Anglican School was an easier affair, with TIGS taking out the game 3-0. This took TIGS into a semi-Final against Broughton Anglican College. TIGS dominated the play and came away with a 1-0 win to take them into the final against Georges River Grammar School. It was an extremely one-sided game, with TIGS attacking the goal on regular occasions, but not able to put the ball in the back of the net. Georges River continued to defend well and the score finished at 0-0, even after 15 minutes of extra time. With no winner able to be decided, both schools were awarded joint winners for the Senior Girls Division. The Year 7 boys had an extremely successful day at the NASSA Football Gala Day. They started the day with two close encounters winning 3-2 and then 1-0. These wins saw them reach the semi-final, which they won convincingly 7-0. The boys met with Thomas Hassall Anglican College in the final. With both teams coming into the final undefeated it was sure to be a tough affair. TIGS were able to take the lead 1-0 and then extend it to 2-0 to come away as the Junior Boys Champions for the day. Thanks to Matt Borg for coaching the boys to this victory.

It was always a contest, and there was very little between the teams, but once TIGS went ahead early in the second half, after a sublime piece of work by Lachlan Scott, there was a noticeable shift in the game. Our boys dominated for the next 15 to 20 minutes, then the desperation set in with Knox and they threw everything forward (including the keeper at frees and corners). Nervous times, nearly everything being played in our third, but we held firm, and showed much better discipline in play, and behaviour, than the opposition. It should not be overlooked that in our last two games we have played and beaten two very large and well resourced Sydney Independent schools, with considerable depth and numbers on which to draw for their teams. A truly wonderful achievement to have come this far. Well done. Final score: TIGS 1 - nil winners over Knox Grammar
