TERM I 2016
Senior School Swimming Carnival House Winners - Aranda
Headmaster Students entering Year 11 at TIGS, will from 2017, have the choice of studying our already successful HSC programme or the IB Diploma Programme (DP). They will make their choice as they prepare to enter their last two years of schooling. The School will support students in both programmes with the same teachers being allocated teaching duties to both courses of study. The benefit of offering two courses of study is that a student can select the pathway that best suits their needs. Not all students are suited to the HSC just as not all students are suited to the DP. The following is an updated comparison of the HSC and DP to assist students in choosing the course that best suits their needs. Higher School Certificate (HSC)
International Baccalaureate Diploma (DP)
Organised by the NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES)
Organised by The International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO)
76,461 candidates sat for the HSC in 2015
148,655 candidates sat for the IB Diploma in 2014
HSC examinations are held in October/ November and results are released about 1 week before Christmas
DP examinations are held in November (or May in the Northern Hemisphere) and results are released early in the New Year
HSC caters for students of all academic ability levels. Subjects available include the traditional academic disciplines and vocationally focussed subjects
DP is designed specifically for students intending to progress to further study at University. Subjects studied are drawn from the traditional academic disciplines
HSC students normally study subjects at DP candidates must study 3 subjects at 2 unit level. A few subjects are offered at Standard Level (SL) and three subjects the Extension level at Higher Level (HL). HL subjects are allocated additional tuition time
Stephen Kinsella Headmaster
?
HSC is awarded to all students that satisfy BOSTES requirements. There is no pass/fail award in the HSC based on assessment results
DP is awarded to students that achieve the DP course requirements and a minimum standard in their assessment results. Failure to achieve this standard means that those students do not receive the Diploma
HSC assessment covers study in Year 12 only – the HSC year. The HSC is assessed using school assessment and external examinations
DP assessment covers all of Years 11 and 12. It includes school assessment and external examinations
HSC students must study a minimum of 12 units in Year 11 (6 subjects) and 10 units (5 subjects) in Year 12. One subject must be English
DP students must study 6 subjects, 1 from each of 6 subject groups – the DP requires a broad range of subjects to be studied
HSC students at TIGS are required to participate in service activities and are encouraged to participate in sport and co-curricular programmes
DP students are required to participate in the Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) programme DP students are prepared for study at university by being required to: *Study Theory of Knowledge (How we know and learn) *Complete and properly reference a 4,000 word research assignment (called the Extended Essay)on a topic of their choice
QUESTION:
Name the seven buildings located on the TIGS campus that are ‘named’ after members of the School Community that have made a significant contribution to the development of our School over its 57 year history? (Answer will be given next week)
The HSC results of students are scaled by BOSTES and then again by the University Admission Centre (UAC) to determine an ATAR (rank) which is used to allocate places at university
The results of DP students are not scaled all subjects and levels are treated equally. A conversion table equates IB scores to HSC ATARs. However, most universities offer positions, including early entry, based on the DP score alone
HSC students wishing to study internationally must apply directly to the university of their choice and submit their HSC/ATAR results for consideration
DP scores are recognised by universities world-wide. It is usual for international and Australian universities to accept an IB Score as sufficient information when allocating places in courses of study
Chaplain’s Message ADULT INQUIRY We talk a lot about inquiry at TIGS. There are ten attributes that characterise the ideal IB learner and one of those attributes is inquiry. According to IB educational philosophy, a healthy learner is one who is always curious and knows how to channel that curiosity into effective learning. We fully agree with this stance at TIGS. Inquiry, as the IB understands it, is a lifelong venture. An IB education aims to create life-long learners. A life-long learner never ceases to inquire. On the contrary, one line of inquiry opens up a multitude of others. And on it goes. Biblical Studies is an important field of inquiry at TIGS. The Bible is such a foundational document for western civilization. We cannot be fully conversant with our culture without a deep understanding of the Bible. This is one of the reasons we include a study of the Bible in the curriculum at TIGS. Another reason is the extraordinary claims made in the Bible. The Bible itself claims to be a special revelation from God to us wherein he discloses himself and his plans and purposes for the world. This claim is so important it demands our full attention. We must have an opinion about this claim and to have a reasonable opinion we must have a good working knowledge of the Bible. For this reason, we aim to
give all TIGS students a solid working knowledge of the Bible. But it is not just for children and young people. The Bible also demands the attention of adults – especially adults - for the very same reasons mentioned above. But there is another reason I believe adults need to read the Bible. If we don’t read the Bible as adults we will tend to trade on the knowledge that we acquired as children and young people. Sometimes there will be no harm in that; at other times our knowledge might be quite incomplete or even distorted. It all comes back to the need for us to be life-long learners. This week you would have received an email invitation to join me for a course designed to explore the central truths of the Christian faith. The course is video-based and promotes robust discussion. The greatest benefit of the course is that it gives us opportunity over six weeks to read Mark’s gospel and to discuss its contents. This is invaluable, especially as adults. Again, I want to commend this course to you for your consideration. I hope to commence on Thursday 3 March from 9am-10am in my office. We will enjoy some morning tea together as we think through the all-important claims of the Bible. I hope you might take up

Students entering Year 11 at TIGS will be in the unique position of being able to choose between two highly respected courses of study - the HSC or the DP. This year, students in Year 10 will be required to make a choice between the HSC and the DP toward the end of Term II. Senior Staff will be available to advise them on the requirements of the HSC and the DP. This will assist the students to select the course that best suits their learning needs. There will also be numerous opportunities for parents to speak to staff, both during school hours and after hours, and raise any questions they may have. The next such opportunity is at 9.00am on Wednesday 9 March (see p.9 for details). University acceptance of the Diploma Programme Three universities, with more to follow, have published the IB Scores required for direct entry into their courses of study. Junior School PATHWAYS FOR ATHLETES TO COMPETE It’s hard to believe that we are already in Week 4, however I can see by the work going up around our School and the settled approach of the children that they are well and truly established into their learning routines for the Term. All students have been enjoying their Swimming Programme each week for sport and students from Years 3 – 6 had a fantastic day competing for their houses at the Swimming Carnival on Thursday. We were blessed with glorious weather and fabulous participation from all students. One of the great strengths of the Junior Sport Programme lead by Mrs Martin, is the commitment to providing pathways for athletes to compete and then represent their School at high levels, whilst at the same time encouraging and providing opportunities as well as a safe place for all students to ‘give it a go’. The other stand out aspect of our Junior School carnivals is the assistance of the Year 10 PE students who do a magnificent job of judging, timing and rescuing our swimmers. It is such a pleasure for Junior School children and staff to see former students returning to Junior School events to encourage their younger peers. Mrs Martin and Mrs Dribbus are still finalising results as this newsletter goes to print so the winner will be announced next week.

Senior School YEAR 10 MYP PERSONAL PROJECTS Students in Year 10 have this year commenced their Middle Years Programme Personal Project. The MYP provides a rigorous framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. It emphasises intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. The Personal Project (PP) is an individual research project undertaken by each student in Year 10. Planning for the PP actually commenced at the end of Year 9. The PP provides a unique opportunity for students to investigate an area of interest, within a global context. The aim is that students will develop new insights and a deeper understanding through an in-depth investigation. Along the way a teacher mentor will support students by meeting with them at four different stages to make sure that they are on track. There is also a 30 minute period, once per week, where students will have access to the library and teachers who will be able to assist them with the skills to undertake effective research. The Personal Project will have 3 main parts: 1. A focus topic and goal, leading to a product or outcome. 2. A process journal 3. A final report
Greg Lanyon Acting Head of Senior School
At this stage in the process students have chosen their topics, undertaken some initial research and should have contacted their teacher mentor. The range of investigations that have been nominated by the current Year 10 is astounding. They provide a window into the teenage brain and the amazing interests and insights young people have developed. From speaking to many students it is obvious that they feel liberated from the usual constraints of a mandated syllabus. The table below provides a snapshot of a selection of the Personal Projects that have been nominated this year.
