Achievements all Round There is less than one week left until the opening of this year’s Senior School Musical Production - West Side Story. In recent years we have been wonderfully entertained by our Performing Arts students in productions as diverse as Footloose, Les Miserables and Jesus Christ Superstar. Each year we wonder how the next production could possibly be better only to be surprised and delighted at the achievement of our students. A highlight of this year’s production is sure to be the dancing. West Side Story is known as a challenging musical because it requires performers who can sing and dance. Dancing has long been a strength at TIGS and those that attend events such as the Music, Dance and Drama Showcase will know how seriously dance is taken by our students and the high level of performance that is achieved. We look forward to watching the ‘Jets’ and the ‘Sharks’ dance their way across the IGC stage and into our memory as another wonderful TIGS production.

We offer all the cast, orchestra and crew our best wishes for the season that starts on Wednesday, 22 June and ends with two performances on Saturday 25 June. Tickets this year are sold online through the TIGS website. Congratulations are in order to two of our teachers: Mr Martin Sormus, Head of Science, has been invited to assist the NSW Board of Studies (BOS) in evaluating Chemistry Examinations developed by the South African Department of Education for their National Senior Certificate. We are not surprised by this recognition of the expertise of Mr Sormus given the high quality of teaching and learning that takes place in our Science program under his leadership. Mr Greg Lanyon, Director of Pastoral Care (Senior School) and teacher of Economics is assisting the NSW Board of Studies in the setting of HSC Economics papers. We congratulate both teachers on receiving recognition of their professional expertise by the Board of Studies. The School has recently undergone external assessment of its programs: Mr Mario Gauci, PYP School Services Associate Manager - Asia Pacific based at the Singapore Office of the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO), evaluated the School’s progress in implementing the Primary Years Program (PYP). He was very complimentary about the progress made at TIGS in just a few years. The School will undergo a full evaluation in June 2012 which, when completed, will result in TIGS being recognised as an IB World School. The compliments were just as strong from the Inspectors of the NSW Board of Studies. Every 5 years they are required to assess each independent school on their compliance with BOS and government rules and regulations. I was pleased to be advised by the Team Leader that their recommendation to the Board is that TIGS receive the maximum 5 years Registration and Accreditation. This is welcomed news and we congratulate the TIGS Staff on achieving this excellent outcome. Stephen Kinsella Headmaster
West Side Story
This week’s article comes from Rev Steve Stanis, Senior Minister at Kiama Anglican and TIGS parent. This coming week a cacophony of sound, the sounds of months of trying will fill our senses as we celebrate the diversity of so many gifts in the School production of “West Side Story”. We will be tempted to measure its success by the quality of the sound that comes from the orchestra, each musical piece and the tune of voices. These are the “outside” sounds of trying that we will notice. What God really wants us to concentrate on are the “inside” sounds. What are the “inside” sounds? The sounds of patience as each piece is mastered. The sounds of encouragement as each participant grows in confidence. The sounds of stage hands setting up and pulling down the stage tirelessly. The sounds of each instrument tuning up for the new practice. The sounds of teacher’s voices leading and guiding, explaining and directing the movements of this musical based on the Shakespearean tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. These “inside” sounds really matter. They capture effort, collaboration, doing your best, learning, taking a risk and participating. Without these “inside” sounds of trying we would not have the privilege and the pleasure of enjoying the wonderful “outside” sounds of “West Side Story” this coming week. Jesus sounds, His words we read in the Bible often speak of the sounds of trying. He says again and again that the “inside” sounds, these sounds of trying, matter so much more ultimately than the “outside” sounds, the sounds that everyone ultimately means. Paul writes of this when he said to the Philippian Church, “Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” (2:4-5) I take it that “the interests of others”, should be what the sounds of our trying are ultimately all about. If each of us really care for others first, then we really embody Jesus words in each of our lives. “Love each other as I have loved you.” (John 15:12) How might these sounds of trying, these “inside sounds” be lived out? Paul fleshes them out for us in the earlier verses of Philippians 2, “Be likeminded, being one in spirit and purpose.” This means to try as hard as you can to collaborate, support, encourage one another with words that build each other up. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.” This means to always do your best to bring out the best in others, be humble and thankful, celebrate the gifts you are given to bring glory to the one who gave each of us these expressions, our God and Father. At TIGS our Christian world view means that the sounds of trying are the sincere and most genuine expression of our appreciation of God who gave us a life to voice praise to his name. May these “inside” sounds of trying fill the experience of musical sounds of “West Side Story” we will enjoy together. Thinking and Working for Others
It’s wet and windy and winter. It’s Week 8 of Term II and lots of Assessment Tasks are happening. There are extra rehearsals for West Side Story and excursions and inspections and competitions and lots of school busy-ness. It’s easy to get caught up in one’s own cares and pre-occupations but in the midst of all this students are taking time to think and do things for others: showing initiative, taking the lead, serving others and most importantly supporting each other in whatever way they can. Last week a group of Year 11 students organised a Biggest Morning Tea with funds going to the Cancer Council, and Year 8 Kogara students organised a Cake Stall on Thursday 16 June to support the Kids2Kids charity. All of these initiatives have been student led. There is an instigator, a leader who has the ‘get up and go’ to broach the subject with others, to visit Mrs. Watt and fill out the forms and drive the activity but what is so encouraging is the pleasure with which others support the team and make it happen. They bake, they prepare the stall and they serve.

Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School
The Year 11s were led by Naomi Folder and on the day I saw Hailey Henderson, James Fraser, Lauren Hatton, Siobhan Butler and Kimberly McEwan, among others, being outstanding assistants patiently serving their fellow students and “resisting the temptation of those fabulous cakes” according to Naomi. The cakes really were fabulous: I think secret and very decadent ingredients were involved in the making of the Brownies and Chocolate Chip Cookies. The Junior School and Senior School were involved in this and Naomi reports that they raised $535.60 from selling the cakes and together with donations they made $755.60 in total.
Similarly with the Year 8 fund-raiser, Dominic Mortimer is the student who has introduced his year group and the School to the Kids2Kids charity which he has supported for some time but it has been Year 8 Kogara who have rallied in support. This event has just occurred so final totals have not been tallied. But it is not just fund-raising per se which is the critical issue. It is the fact that our students are so concerned for others that they not only work hard to raise funds but also to raise awareness of serious social issues which we need to address both in our country and also overseas. This bodes well for our students being able to go out into the world living and personifying our Mission and Values. Well done!

Playground Insight Parents often say to me that they wish they could see what happens here at school during their children’s days. This week we are looking into the children’s playground experiences each day at school. The driveway is ‘handball central’. The children really enjoy playing handball and the culminating event for them all is when Year 6 versus the Headmaster in the Junior School Handball Challenge. It is great to see the progression of skill as the younger students play alongside the Year 5 and Year 6 students. The Year 6 Student Leaders are leading the way here in supporting the development of handball skills and understanding of the rules for the younger students. Wall Ball is a particular favourite of Year 5 students up against the wall near the TIGS Extended rooms. There is a very sophisticated set of rules for this game that the students have designed and it is another happy place in our playground. The Infants Play Lawn is an exciting place where the sandpit rules supreme. Many parents would know this from the amount of sand that comes home in shoes and pockets! The children are very busy building and being involved in imaginative play. The play equipment is a popular source of fun and we often get to watch impromptu concerts on the deck in this area. The Chill Zone is another popular spot, where construction, chess and quiet play is popular. We are getting better at packing up after ourselves although just like at home, this is something that we need to continue to improve. The oval is the home of soccer. Mr ‘Robbo’ runs the lunch time soccer competition and several other fun games of soccer are all occurring at the same time. It is fabulous to see Head of Junior School how these games co exist (most of the time) so all of the students can enjoy the action. Another great positive of the oval is the interaction across year groups. Many of our Year 6 Student Leaders have taken the role of assisting positive play during soccer as their area of responsibility for this term. They are doing a wonderful job! The Play Gym is right at the bottom of our School and another popular area for the children to stretch their legs during lunch time. Recently there has been a lot of activity building “bases”. This has been challenging for the children in negotiating space as well as resources, but the learning occurring has been very impressive. Many children also enjoy going to the Library during lunch time to read or use the technology available. Our Library is a welcoming place where some cross school interaction can occur. It is a popular lunchtime venue. I hope this little insight into what happens in the playground allows many great conversations over the dinner table this weekend. As I write the newsletter this week it is absolutely pouring with rain, the children will be missing their favourite places in the playground and looking forward to the weather clearing!

Diocesan Hockey Last Monday the Catholic Diocese Hockey Carnival was held at Unanderra. The teams were as follows: Boys: Mungo Skyring, Jacques Le Serve, Ross Sharpe, Cohen Caruana, Harrison Lindsay, Robert Brodie, Adrian Whitehall, Matthew Scavarelli, Daniel Lazarus, Oliver Sinclair and Xavier Whitton. Girls: Tegan Richards, Teagan Johnston, Margot Allison, Zoe Morrell, Chloe Johnston, Claire Bonham, Helena Bonham, Sophie Myerson and Grace Crisp. Unfortunately due to illness and injury the girl’s team played short, but still managed to win a game and be competitive in the others. Special mention goes to Chloe Johnston and Tegan Richards who put in 100% effort. The boy’s team had a slow start but managed to win their 1st game with a convincing win of 6-1. The next game they were not so lucky and struggled to come back after an early goal against them to be beaten 2-1. The third game against St Josephs to me was the highlight of the day. Playing against a much stronger team they were ahead goal for goal for the 1st half, until weariness gave way and the boys unfortunately lost. Credit must go to Mungo Skyring who performed well in and out of the goal. I would also like to thank all the non-hockey players who attended and helped out, they even scored several of our magnificent goals. It is always a pleasure to take away TIGS hockey teams, they are always well behaved and show great sportsmanship, so once again well done to all of you on a great day. Kerri Baird MIC Hockey
