Issue 8 Term I, 2011

Academic • Christian • Caring

One of the highlights of the School Calendar is the Senior School Music, Dance and Drama Festival. Each year students from our four Houses compete in the categories of Drama, Dance Duo, Dance Troupe, House Song (this year’s theme was Abba), Vocal Solo, Original Song, Instrumental Solo and Popular Song. Competition is hotly contested as each House seeks to gain points that count toward the Shell Shield which is awarded to the winning House each year at the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony. What makes the Shell Shield unusual is that at TIGS the House competition covers a wide range of activities, not just sporting activities, and the most eagerly anticipated contest is the Music, Dance and Drama Festival. Congratulations to this year’s winning house: Coligan. I hope parents and friends will be able to join students and staff to enjoy a sample of this year’s Festival at the Showcase to be held tonight, Friday 1 April at 7.00pm in the IGC. On a different note (no pun intended), Rev John Reed has advised me that he will be concluding his time as Chaplain of TIGS at the end of Term I. He will be taking up an appointment as the Rector of the Keiraville Parish of the Anglican Church. Rev Reed has a long association with the School which dates back to his time as a student from 1980 through to his appointment as School Captain in 1983. We are sad that he is leaving us after more than six years at TIGS. He has carried out his role as Chaplain with grace and wisdom and we have benefited greatly from his oversight of the spiritual health and development of our school.

Stephen Kinsella Headmaster

Rev Reed will remain a member of our community in his role as a parent and we look forward to maintaining our friendship with him as the rector of one of our associated parishes. We pray that God will bless him, his family and his work in his new role. With Easter appearing in the calendar so late this year a number of events normally held at this time of year will occur at awkward times. Students will return to school on Wednesday, 27 April and ANZAC services for the Junior and Senior Schools will be held on Thursday, 28 April. Easter services will be held in this coming week: 12.30pm Thursday 7 April 12.20pm Friday 8 April

Junior School Easter Service in Rees Hall Senior School Easter Service in the IGC

Families and friends are welcome to join us at these services and help us to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, an event that is at the core of all that we do at TIGS. Stephen Kinsella Headmaster

Luke 24:1-6 At the crack of dawn on Sunday, the women came to the tomb carrying the burial spices they had prepared. They found the entrance stone rolled back from the tomb, so they walked in. But once inside, they couldn’t find the body of the Master Jesus. They were puzzled, wondering what to make of this. Then, out of nowhere it seemed, two men, light cascading over them, stood there. The women were awestruck and bowed down in worship. The men said, “Why are you looking for the Living One in a cemetery? He is not here, he is risen.”

Chaplain’s Connection

“And now, the end is here; And so I face the final curtain My friend, I’ll say it clear; I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain I’ve lived a life that’s full; I traveled each and ev’ry highway ..” Thus sang Frank Sinatra, in the song which he released in 1969 to massive international acclaim (it still holds the record for most weeks in the top 40 in the UK – 75 weeks, from April 1969 to September 1971). I always think of those words whenever an ending comes in life. Not that all endings bring down the final curtain – some simply offer up the opportunity for a new beginning elsewhere. But it does give one pause to reflect on the part of the story that is coming to an end. There are many lines in that song that I can easily echo: “Regrets, I’ve had a few; But then again, too few to mention ...” “Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew; When I bit off more than I could chew ...” “I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried; I’ve had my fill, my share of losing ...” There are indeed in life regrets and joys; tears and laughter; challenges met, and challenges that were met less well than they might have been. We have our best intentions balanced by our human weaknesses and foibles. To that extent, I happily echo the words (if not the voice) of Sinatra. However, there is one part of the song that does not sit comfortably with me. And it is, unfortunately, at the very heart of the song: “And may I say, not in a shy way, “Oh, no, oh, no, not me, I did it my way”” Paul Anka, who wrote the lyrics, once said in an interview: “I read a lot of periodicals, and I noticed everything was ‘my this’ and ‘my that’. We were in the ‘me generation’ and Frank became the guy for me to use to say that.” I suspect in part that is what has made the song so popular and endurable: it captured the mood of a generation.

John Reed Chaplain

But, while none of us can totally escape the self-confidence and self-service that the song speaks of, it ought not to sit comfortable with any Christian person. Because we are called not to live for ourselves, but for the Christ who loves us and died for us. And we are urged not to do it our way, but God’s way. My favourite verse in the Bible, which was inscribed inside the front cover of the Bible given to me by my godfather at my baptism, is Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” That is how I try to live. Often I fail, and I thank God for his grace. Thank you also for yours in supporting and putting up with me. May God bless you richly this Easter and into the future.

Health and Safety and serious fun!

Senior School

Over the last few years there have been a number of policies put in place to try to ensure the health and safety of every member of our school community, most significantly the health and safety of our students. Students are regularly reminded of these policies and the importance of all members of the community accepting that each one of us has a responsibility in this regard. I’m bringing these to your attention as parents so that you can ensure that your children understand: • • • •

the importance of maintaining a safe and healthy environment, their individual responsibility in this regard, the fact that there will be some limitations to their personal desires and wishes in order to serve the greater good of the School community, and finally that failure to observe these policies will result in there being consequences for them.

The first policy is that there should be no spray deodorants used in the School. These can trigger serious reactions in students with asthma.

Monica Watt

Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School

Others which affect students on a day to day basis are: that there should be no chewing gum in the School; school bags should be in lockers throughout the day and only firm leather school shoes must be worn. Each of these measures has been taken because of accidents, incidents or hazards identified in the past. And on a less draconian note the Music, Dance and Drama Competition has been outstanding again this year. Well done particularly to House Captains, House Patrons, House Mentors and every House member who played their part.

Junior School

This week we held the first “Coffee and Curriculum” meeting in the Junior School. The purpose of this group was discussed and was outlined as being: • • • • •

Judi Nealy

Head of Junior School

Reference group into our wider community to promote an understanding of the philosophy of learning underpinning everything we do in the Junior school Explore community perceptions of various aspects of the PYP and our school learning agenda. Conduit of understanding between school and community. Growing the culture of a community of learning – all members; students, all staff and families. Looking for opportunities to utilise community expertise in the development and refinement of our program of inquiry.

We have decided that a focus on internationalism will be maintained for 2011. At our first meeting we discussed language and its role in developing internationally minded people. We looked at the links between the BOS English document and the PYP documentation. Our group was encouraged to see much synergy in underpinning principles between the two documents. Great discussion was had on the development of Mother Tongue and Bilingualism as well as expertise in the language of instruction (English). Thank you to those interested parents who attended our first meeting and I look forward to meeting again in Term II to continue our discussions. If you feel that this is an area of our School to which you could contribute, please contact Kerrie Tregonning with an expression of interest to participate in the group.

The end of Term is a little bit sad as it has now been announced that Rev Reed is leaving our school to take up the position as Rector at Keiraville Anglican Church. While we celebrate with Rev Reed and his family this exciting new challenge, there is certainly an element of sadness as we will miss his involvement in the Junior School. Rev Reed’s last service in the Junior School will be the Easter Service in Rees Hall on Thursday afternoon beginning at 12.30pm. I encourage all families to attend if they are able so we can show our support of the great work he has done and wish him well as he moves on to new challenges. I would also remind families of Years 3 - 6 that Thursday is a full school day and that it is our expectation that all children will return to school after the cross country to participate in our Easter Service. There will be no sign-out facility at the Cross Country and any children needing to leave early will need to be signed out at the Junior School office as per usual. The celebration of Easter as a school is a very important event in our School calendar and it is important that our whole School participates in the Easter Service together. Thank you for your support in this matter and I look forward to seeing you all at the Easter service. REMINDER: Students return to school in SUMMER UNIFORM until the beginning of Week 4 16 May 2011. Jumpers and blazers can be worn if the weather is cool. Creative Arts News What a fun night out! The Art Gallery of NSW was the perfect venue for a group of TIGS students to experience art and to meet other students who are also interested in art. The students from Years 7 - 12 viewed the ArtExpress exhibition and were really inspired by the students’ artworks. They are pictured on the steps of the gallery below. Next term, we will have the opportunity to see Australia’s premier portrait competition The Archibald Prize. This Art After Hours visit is always popular and positions fill quickly on the bus. It will occur during the second week of next term May 4, so interested students should collect a permission slip from the Creative Arts Staff room as soon as possible to secure their position on the bus.

NAPLAN Dates

NAPLAN for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take place from 10 to the 12 May 2011.

Year 10 History Often learning about the past can be an objective, intellectual activity. We are taught to read and analyse sources, form arguments and corroborate evidence. Subsequently, the human narrative is shrouded and our understanding of History suffers because the individual, the personal, the emotive is lost. Year 10 History are currently studying Australia’s involvement in the 2nd Indo-China conflict or The Vietnam War and were privileged to listen to and engage with a presentation by Mrs Suong Nguyen on Monday 28 March. As a refugee having fled Vietnam by boat due to persecution in 1981, Mrs Nguyen was able to bring to life for the students living in Vietnam during the war and the impact on the war on ordinary civilians. Her personal insights and knowledge are not found in any textbooks and provided the students with a unique learning experience. She was very gracious and receptive to the students and is a valuable asset to the school community. We thank Mrs Nguyen very much for volunteering her time to support the History programs at the School. Mr Chamberlain

AFL Umpiring

We were fortunate to have two highly accredited AFL umpires conduct an umpiring workshop with Mr Deck’s Yr 10 PE lesson last week. Both umpires have extensive experience, having officiated in 12 professional AFL Grand Finals. Mr Deck and the class gained a great deal from the valuable opportunity to work with skilled professionals and I’d like to thank Dave Johnson, NSWACT AFL Illawarra Development Manager, for organising the visit. Anyone 13 years or over who is interested in qualifying as an AFL umpire please see Ms Graydon for information.

Assembly promotion

Ms Graydon was pleased to welcome two of our senior students to speak at assembly in week 8. We heard from Mark Mura (Year 12) who was selected in the U/18 NSW/ACT AFL Rams State Squad and recently travelled to Albury for trial games. Mark will travel to Melbourne for final selections in April. New student, Kuiam Anu (Year 10) also addressed the assembly. He is currently training four days a week under Sydney Swans’ Coach Paul Roos as a member of the Swans Academy. Kuiam has been nominated to attend the CIS AFL selection trials later this month and we wish him well.

Unfortunately the Open Girls’ team consisting of Georga Bovington,Sarah Baker, Bijanka Veljanovski, Elena Hoban, Peita Kallinikos, Harriet Ingell, Phaoebe Fraser and Amy Carberry were unable to play at the North Dalton Park Gala Day in week 7 due to Music and Drama rehearsals. TIGS Extended As daylight savings comes to an end this weekend, this means the days will get dark very early with most of us arriving home in the dark. Wouldn’t it be great to get home from work and the children have already done their homework with supervision, had a nutritious afternoon tea and enjoyed a social play with their friends? Did you know TIGS Extended is an approved Childcare service, so all families are eligible for the Childcare Tax Rebate of 50% for out of pocket childcare expenses. Sound too good to be true? Well it is true! Just look at the pictures of the children having so much fun at TIGS Extended. Places are limited so contact the service Director via email kbuckley@tigs.nsw.edu.au
