FRONTLIST RAILWAYS
FRONTLIST RAILWAYS Each a Glimpse…
THE FLYING SCOTSMAN A new format landscape book presenting the story of the Flying Scotsman in an accessible style, attractively illustrated throughout. The Flying Scotsman is arguably the most famous locomotive in the world. Built by the LNER in 1923 the locomotive soon became the company’s flagship locomotive, appearing in contemporary advertising for its prestigious London-Edinburgh service, also called the ‘Flying Scotsman’. The Flying Scotsman became the first locomotive to complete this run nonstop and also the first steam engine to officially be recorded at 100mph. Following withdrawal from service in 1963 The Flying Scotsman was bought privately and restored to its original livery and run throughout the UK. It was also taken on a worldwide tour to Australia. Currently being restored by the National Railway Museum, who bought it for the nation in 2004, No 4472 is hoped to be back on the tracks in 2010. As previously in its 40 years of preservation it will tour the country on main lines and visit preserved lines so that thousands of enthusiasts will once again be able to see this steam engine live.
The Flying Scotsman
This book is written by an authority in the subject and will appeal not only to the enthusiast but also to those more generally interested in the story of the Flying Scotsman.
The name of Colin Gifford is synonymous with a particular style of artistic railway photography. During the last decade of steam operation he was one of a number of railway photographers who travelled widely recording the steam scene in a slightly more avant garde and impressionistic way than many of his contemporary and more traditional photographer colleagues. As a designer, he was briefly employed by Ian Allan Ltd and his photographs were one of the features of Modern Railways magazine during this period. As a result of his photographic work, he produced four books, of which Each a Glimpse… is perhaps the best-known and the most commercially successful. First published in 1970 and long out of print, the book included around 270 mono illustrations in an original and unique artistic style. Alongside the photographs were handwritten text and captions, creating therefore almost a scrapbook feel for the book. Subsequent to his career at Ian Allan Ltd, Gifford continued as a photographer and designer, with his work being featured in exhibitions and on postage stamps. This improved second edition of the book is reproduced in quality using all of the original images and text from the first impression.

The Intemperate Engineer: Isambard Kingdom Brunel in His Own Words Adrian Vaughan Isambard Kingdom Brunel is a huge name in British engineering history, his legacy reaching almost legendary proportions. Brunel’s designs revolutionised public transport and modern engineering, and although his projects were not always successful, they often contained innovative solutions to long-standing engineering problems.
David McIntosh
Although much has been written about the great man, this new book takes a unique angle and looks in depth at his letters and writings, revealing much about the real person. The author aims to make readers feel that they are standing next to Brunel as he works at his desk, and are travelling with him through Victorian Britain. They will feel the detail of his worries, his difficulties and tensions and ultimately realise his humanity – his genius and his fallibility.

Steam on the Western: The Final Decades
Scotland’s Railways: The Classic Photography of W. J. Verden Anderson
Michael H. C. Baker
W. J. Verden Anderson (A Tribute by Keith Anderson and Brian Stephenson)
Michael Baker, well known as a devotee of the GWR, has put together a stunning portfolio of images — predominantly mono but including colour for the later years — covering the final two decades of steam on the Great Western/Western Region from the final year of the GWR’s independence in 1947 through to the final demise of main line steam in 1968.
W. J. V. Anderson is undoubtedly one of the most widely respected railway photographers whose images are almost instantly recognisable from their unsurpassed technical accomplishment and the skill of their composition. Undoubtedly two of the best reviewed and commercially successful railway publications produced by Ian Allan Publishing in recent years have been the two volumes co-authored by Brian Stephenson and Keith Anderson drawing upon the stunning photography of the late W. J. Verden Anderson and featuring the dramatic landscapes of Scotland. The first volume, illustrated in both mono and colour, concentrated upon Anderson’s steam photography whilst the second volume, illustrated largely in colour, featured diesel traction.
The photographs come from a number of sources — including many of the best-known photographers in the country (such as Brian Morrison, Pursey Short, Peter Treloar and the author himself) — and record the evolution of steam traction over the entire Western over this two-decade period.
Ian Allan Publishing | August 2010 | Hardback | 216 x 292mm | 160pp c160 mono and colour illustrations | 978 0 71103 492 1 | £19.99
The book covers the story year-by-year with a textual introduction to each era. Apart from the photographs, the book also includes items of relevant ephemera such as tickets and posters. The photographs are carefully selected to include every part of the ex-GWR network and as wide a variety of motive power, including the BR Standard types and inter-regional workings, as possible.
Ian Allan Publishing | October 2010 | Hardback | 216 x 292mm 160pp | 978 0 71103 466 2 | £30.00
Predominantly illustrated in colour throughout, this stunning new book draws upon the large number of unpublished images that did not feature in the original books, and portrays the Scottish Region during the years from 1960 through to around 1980.

Tony Butcher
Railways of South Wales
In the years following the Modernisation Plan of 1955, main-line steam traction was in rapid retreat from BR metals and the process of eliminating steam traction from British Railways was accelerated considerably from the late 1950s onwards when BR’s deteriorating financial position resulted in the withdrawal of many of the unremunerative branch lines and secondary routes.
Adrian Kenny
As the process of line withdrawals and the elimination of familiar steam locomotive classes accelerated, so an increasing number of closures were specials operated, often taking locomotives to unfamiliar haunts and providing once in a lifetime opportunities to record sights that were soon to become part of history. For almost a decade — from June 1961 through to the final withdrawal of main-line steam in August 1968 — Tony Butcher travelled widely through the country recording these special workings in colour. His collection, which is almost exclusively unpublished, provides a colourful reminder to the many special trains that were operated on BR metals during these years. This large-format all-colour album includes 140 fine images from these years with detailed accompanying captions, which include anecdotal information about the significance of each of the trains.

Reflecting the changing face of railway operation in South Wales since the mid1990s, this fascinating new book includes a wide range of mouth watering railway scenes from some of the loveliest landscapes in the UK. The author encompasses a shot from every working branch line in South Wales, and covers all of the main classes of locomotive and unit that could have been seen in the time period stated. The book also includes a glimpse of the industrial scene in South Wales with coverage of Corus at Port Talbot, Ebbw Vale and Trostre; BP at Baglan Bay and Hanson at Machen quarry.

The past decade has seen considerable changes to the railway operations in the area; Arriva Trains Wales has come to dominate passenger services with the demise of the original franchisees and a number of lines have reopened for passenger services, most notably the Ebbw Vale branch and the line from Bridgend to Barry. There remains, despite the closure of all of the deep level mines (with the recent demise of Tower) and the loss of the steelworks at Ebbw Vale, considerable freight traffic.

Steam Trails: North Wales
Tornado
Michael Clemens
Tom Ingall
Michael Clemens and his father were keenly interested in railways and travelled widely throughout the United Kingdom covering the changing railway scene using both cine and still photography. In the third of a series recording a pictorial tribute to the final years of steam operation, the author covers the lines of North Wales.
The first steam locomotive to be built in Britain for over 40 years, when Tornado first hit the rails earlier this year it generated nationwide media coverage and tens of thousands came to see it as it toured the country. When the list of locomotives to be preserved for the nation was drawn up in the early 1960s when BR’s steam fleet was being withdrawn and scrapped, the fact that no representative of Peppercorn’s ‘A1’ Pacifics was to be saved left a significant gap in Britain’s preserved railway heritage. In 1990 a group of enthusiasts put into action the ambitious plan to construct an exact replica of one of these locomotives. Although the engineering has faithfully recreated the original locomotive, it has been fitted with a modern day electrical system to enable it to run freely on Britain’s national railway network, day and night, at speeds up to 75mph, giving present day enthusiasts the chance once again to thrill to the sight of a steam locomotive in action at full pelt.
Covering an area largely north of a line from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and west of a line from Shrewsbury to Birkenhead, and including the Cambrian lines in the east (including Ellesmere and Whitchurch), the author provides a selection of largely unpublished photographs to illustrate the diversity of steam operation in North Wales. Always a popular area with enthusiasts, North Wales possessed a fascinating network of lines that are explored in the pages of this book. It will appeal to all enthusiasts who know the area as well as to locals looking back fondly on a long-lost era. FRONTLIST MODELLING
FRONTLIST MODELLING Aspects of Modelling: Signalling
Aspects of Modelling: Digital Command Control 2nd Edition
Nigel Digby Signalling is a vital component in the safe working of any full-size railway and yet it rarely gets the attention it deserves from modellers. Author Nigel Digby, in the latest volume of the Ian Allan ‘Aspects of Modelling’ series, argues that it should, and leaves the modeller with no excuse to avoid proper signalling, covering subjects such as basic principles, the design and placing of signals, signalboxes, and the available kits and components. Lavishly illustrated with diagrams and photographs of models and the prototype, this book will convince any railway modeller of the necessity of signalling their layout.
Ian Morton
A brand new and fully updated edition of this hugely successful handbook which guides modellers through the complexities of using DCC. When published in 2007 Aspects of Modelling: Digital Command Control was one of the first books to address this important new technology for railway modellers. Reprinted twice, the book has been the essential introductory guide for all modellers using DCC. This new updated edition has been designed to encompass all recent changes in this technology, and is certain to be popular with keen modellers wishing to master the latest developments. DCC has been one of the most radical developments in the model railway hobby in recent years, and the equipment is comparatively expensive and comprehensive. Modellers are increasingly embracing DCC as it enables one to operate each locomotive on a model layout individually using computer technology, making the whole operation far more realistic. Special effects such as sound can also be added with DCC and most proprietary models come with DCC compatibility. It is also possible to upgrade older models to take advantage of this new technology.

Aspects of Modelling: Scenery
This useful book explains the basic principles of everything the modeller needs to know to adopt DCC into a new layout or to add it to an existing one. It also includes a detailed chapter on new developments such as sound, steam and smoke as well as a summary of potential advanced use and programming.
J Hobden This valuable new addition to the ‘Aspects of Modelling’ series will give modellers of all abilities, and particularly beginners, all the necessary skills and abilities to perfect one of the most important and satisfying aspects of a model railway layout, the scenery.
Areas covered include: - What is DCC - How to convert to DCC - Base stations, boosters and cabs - Locomotive decoders - Wiring for DCC - Connecting up for first use - Glossary of technical terms - Trouble shooting guide - Guide to manufacturers, suppliers and equipment “The first edition of Aspects of Modelling: Digital Command Control by Hornby Magazine contributor Ian Morton offered a simple introduction to the subject. This second edition looks set to follow its format and offer Digital model railway operators more advanced and useful information to further their hobby.” Mike Wild, Editor, Hornby Magazine
Beginning with the basics this volume shows how best to construct the environment through which the railway operates, and shows how to build cuttings, embankments, bridges, tunnels, rivers and road - in fact, all the things that go to recreate a particular scene or location. Beautifully illustrated throughout with vivid, detailed pictures which are ideal for reference, this practical guide provides essential advice for anyone starting out in railway modelling, and also gives many useful hints and tips for experienced modellers or how to enhance a recreated railway scene and achieve the very highest level of accuracy in every layout.
Ian Morton has been modelling for more years than he cares to admit to and has written books on various aspects of model railways, ranging from baseboards to Digital Command Control. He is also a regular contributor to Hornby Magazine. He believes it has never been easier to build a model railway as demonstrated by his ‘Shake-the-Box’ layout, built from ready to use items, serialised in Hornby Magazine and a similar layout constructed for a DVD.

FRONTLIST MODELLING Southern EMUs Before Privatisation in Colour for the Modeller and Historian
Hornby Magazine Yearbook No 3 The first two editions of the Hornby Magazine Yearbooks were a huge success, instantly in high demand and sold rapidly. This third edition follows on with this successful blend of practical features for a wide range of modelling skills. The illustrations are vital to the success of the book, and this new edition is packed full of high quality photographs, plans, layouts to illustrate the practical nature of many of the features.
Bruce Oliver There is a considerable and increasing amount of interest in Southern Region EMUs, and this new book looks in detail at the subject for all historians and in particular, for modellers who are keen to feature this type of traction on their layouts.
Mike Wild, editor of Hornby Magazine, has compiled a selection of new material to complement the magazine, making this an attractive end-of-year purchase for all modellers. The features will inform and guide and include how-to features, fantastic images of the best layouts, modelling tips, and articles about the history of the railways appropriate for all the popular scales.
The period from 1970 through to 1990 is studied closely, examining the years immediately prior to Privatisation when the generation of EMUs that BR inherited from the SR in 1948 were gradually being replaced and the first generation of BR-built EMUs were in their prime. Lavishly illustrated with a fantastic selection of unpublished colour photographs all with informative captions, the book also includes a comprehensive overview of the subject.

British Railway DMUs in Colour for the Modeller and Historian Gavin Morrison It is now more than 70 years since the first DMUs made their first appearance on the British railway system and more than 50 years since DMUs were introduced onto the BR network in large numbers. From the late 1950s onwards several thousand DMU vehicles were brought into service as replacement for steam services over branches and secondary routes and from the mid-1980s onwards this first generation of DMU was gradually replaced by a second-generation of DMU although the final elimination of the first-generation units did not occur until the first years of the 21st century.
For other titles in this series, see page 20
Although initially ill-favoured, as the years passed, so the humble DMU has attracted an evergrowing army of enthusiast fans and this is reflected in the number of web-sites devoted to the subject, to the increasing number of models that are emerging — a reflection of the fact that virtually no model railway covering the BR scene post 1955 can avoid operating DMUs — and in the sales of earlier volumes covering the first-generation DMUs. A volume covering the firstgeneration DMU fleet was published in the ‘Modeller & Historian’ series in late 2006; this followup volume again records the first-generation sets but also development of the second-generation stock over the past 20 years.

This new title in OPC’s popular ‘Illustrated History’ series covers the history of the Woodhead Route, a line which has almost achieved a cult status among railway enthusiasts. Constructed originally by the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne & Manchester Railway, the route from Sheffield to Manchester was opened in 1845. Crossing the bleak and dramatic Pennine landscsape, the route featured one of the earliest long tunnels to be constructed in Britain — the Woodhead Tunnel — which, when originally completed, was the longest tunnel in the world. The route became part of the Great Central Railway, passing to the LNER in 1923 and to BR in 1948. Although the GCR had proposals to electrify the route, it was only under the LNER that progress commenced but it was not until after Nationalisation that the route — with its new tunnels at Woodhead — was fully electrified. The line was unique in that it had its own fleet of distinctive electric locomotives and while primarily electrified for trans-Pennine coal traffic, the route also saw electrified passenger services and remained a diversionary route until closure as a through route in 1981.

NOODLE BOOKS
A Pictorial Record of L.M.S. Signals: Standard Semaphore Signals and Signal Boxes L.G. Warburton First published in 1972, this reference work on L.M.S. Signals is still held in high regard by all railway historians today and remains the definitive book on the subject. Up to that time, few books of this type had ever been produced, yet it set the scene for what would become the now expected detailed work on specific examples of railway history. Only 800 copies of the original book were produced and it has never been reprinted. Those few copies that do come on the market today command a high price, not just because of rarity value, but because of the expertise clearly demonstrated in its compilation. Sabotaged and Defeated Revisted: Pre and Post Closure Views on the Somerset & Dorset Jeffery Grayer In 2006, forty years on from that closure, accomplished railway author Jeffery Grayer uncovered a unique collection of images capturing more than just straight-forward trains. The views captured sadness and a deep nostalgia for what had once been. Within this volume, the author returns for another look at this historic line, and reveals many rare views of its last days. The last trains, the closure scene and the demolition all feature, within a heavy atmosphere of melancholy. This is an album that is bound to find a place on the bookshelves of all keen railway historians, as well as those who hanker for just a little piece of nostalgia. BR Blue No. 3: Freight in the 1980s John Dedman Following on from the huge success of the first two volumes of the BR Blue series: Southampton and the New Forest and Western Region South and West, eminent railway author John Dedman now turns his attention to freight workings during the later part of the Blue liveried era through the 1980’s. With country wide coverage, this volume examines everything from large marshalling yards to smaller depots as well as the trains themselves, as seen on both main line and freight only routes. This is a marvellous record of a golden era which has now disappeared almost entirely, making this album a must-have purchase.

Another feature examines the military railway to Porton, with a huge range of photographs capturing this remarkable WW1 enterprise. Also included is a fully illustrated article on the tragic Ford accident of 1951, with human error the sad cause. Further installments of the Kent Coast Electrification and Confessions of a Train Spotter are also included, as well as regular features on Permanent Way, Rolling Stock, letters and several photo features. The Southern Way Issue No. 12
Richard Parkinson
Concluding our quartet of regular issues of The Southern Way for the year, this brand new volume has a wonderfully varied content to suit every taste. Highlights will include a continuation of the popular series from Richard Simmons on life at Southampton TSO, Part 2 of The Middlebere Tramway, and an article on Lewes - a Sussex crossroads.
Richard Parkinson was a steam fireman based at the former Exmouth Junction steam depot on the outskirts of Exeter. From here he worked passenger and freight trains on the main line to Salisbury as well as west to Okehampton and occasionally beyond. As an enthusiast as well as a dedicated railwayman, he faithfully recorded these trips in both words and pictures, capturing a snapshot in time that is now long-lost. A compelling and at times hilarious account, this unique book is a must-have purchase for all keen railway enthusiasts.
Photo features will include a collection from the archives of Alan Cobb as well as some more modern material from the 1950s covering both steam and electric subjects. Regular features such as Rolling Stock, Letters and Permanent Way are all included, as well as a lovely colour section. A must-have for all followers of the series and lovers of the Southern region, this is one not to be missed!

KESTREL RAILWAY BOOKS
Northumberland & Durham Railway Pictorial 1948-1967
Modern Traction Rail Mishaps: A pictorial study of accidents, derailments and collisions
Brian J. Dickson
Colin J. Marsden and Christopher G. Perkins
This pictorial review shows the changing railway scene in the adjoining counties of Northumberland and Durham from Nationalisation untill the end of main-line steam in 1967. It contains well-captioned photographs of British Railways, National Coal Board and other private railways, laid out in date order to show the progression from almost exclusive steam working to total diesel working during this brief period of only 19 years.
These tragic incidents are largely portrayed through a wide range of photographs supported by extended captions, with some of the more major events being reviewed as comprehensive ‘Case Studies’ including maps, drawings and full details of the accident and the reasons behind the problem. The book in no way glorifies train accidents and mishaps, but shows readers what can and has happened to modern traction rolling stock in the UK.

Hush-Hush – The Story of LNER 10000
Modern Locomotives Illustrated Annual No. 2
William Brown
Colin J. Marsden and Christopher G. Perkins
Finally, the story of Gresley’s “Hush Hush” project is told in full. From his first ever encounter as a child with a model that seemed more like a spaceship than a locomotive, author William Brown has been fascinated by 10000. Meticulous research involving hundreds of documents has allowed him to piece together for the first time the true story of his intriguing part of LNER history, and the far-reaching effects it had on steam locomotive development.
Following the sell-out success of the first Modern Locomotives Illustrated Annual published in September 2009, Annual No. 2 is certain to take the modern traction market by storm. This brilliant new hardback will contain a collection of short features on a diverse selection of UK and worldwide rail subjects, each with an informative text and fully illustrated with vivid images. The Annual will follow the main editorial theme of the highly successful bi-monthly Modern Locomotives Illustrated magazine, with the high quality design and print production that readers have come to expect.

The Pigeon in the Wider World Jean Hansell This profusely illustrated book examines the role of the pigeon in the daily life and cultural thought of many different civilisations across the world. From the ancient Middle East and Classical Greece and Rome, to both historical and modern examples from Egypt, India, Iran and China, the author covers a panoply of practices and beliefs. Further chapters cover topics such as the uses and status of the pigeon along the course of the Silk Road, and the history of the bird as a messenger, ranging from Noah to heroic flights as part of the British army in both World Wars. The fruit of many years of research by an accomplished author, this book reveals many fascinating insights into different societies and is certain to appeal to all keen social historians as well as ornithologists, students of religion and pigeon fanciers.

Austrian Explorer
Andalusian Explorer
Hop aboard the one and only Austrian Explorer to take a fascinating railway journey through Austria, the cultural centre of Europe. From the eastern coast in the capital city of Vienna to the western border of Lake Constance, this train excursion captures the heartbeat of a nation. Whether it is a leisurely break in the day to drink in the Danube basin or to marvel over the peaks of the Carnic Alps, each whistle stop is poetic and informative for the true adventurer. Spectacular sections of the route in the Voralberg and Tyrol areas to the west are contrasted with Upper and Lower Austria, where you find a less familiar but equally charming landscape of old farms, quiet villages, vineyards, churches and monasteries.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime journey that takes in the exotic sights and sounds of southern Spain filmed from a historic Pullmanstyle railway carriage. The polished wood and gleaming brass of this antique train resonate with the elegance of the golden age of rail travel. Starting in Seville, the soaring cathedrals, opulent palaces and the white-washed beauty and cobblestone streets of the old quarter are shown, soundly evoking the spirit of bygone centuries. Next along this journey is the dazzling Moorish palace Alhambra, an extraordinary sight with its imposing magnificance. Ending the tour on the Costa del Sol, where the setting sun on the Mediterranean Sea is like a brilliant, radiant jewel completes this stunning railway journey through Spain.

Belgium Byways
Rhine Express
The beauty of Belgium speeds by on this spectacular railway journey, starting in the capital city of Brussels, the train twists its way through the rural spread of such hamlets as Hansbeke, Maria-Aalter, and Oostkamp. After a brief taste of culture, the voyage rambles toward the windswept shore of the North Sea region of the country. From here, the complex tramway of the Vicinal takes adventurers to their final port of call in the ancient town of Bruges. Found across the canal from the city of Zeebrugge, today Bruges is one of the best-preserved medieval centres found in Europe.
Beginning in the beautiful and picturesque city of Cologne, with its world-renowned cathedral, we take the train along the famous Rhine, with a rare view from the East bank of the Rhine, riding the rails usually reserved for Germany’s busy freight trains, as well as the passenger lines of the West bank. Past the famous Lorelei to the city of Bonn, we take a ride along the Drachenffelsbahn, the scenic and historic rack railway of Konigswinter. This magnificent journey stops for sightseeing at some of Germany’s fascinating castles, pausing again at the historic town of Wiesbaden, before continuing onwards to the busy and welcoming city of Frankfurt.

The Spitfire was one of the most – perhaps the most – successful fighter designs of all time and its service career linked the biplane era with the jet age. Yet the Spitfire is much more than just a superb flying machine. During World War 2 it occupied a unique place in the psyche of the British people and many believed it played a major part in saving the nation from defeat during the grim days of 1940. The wing design gave it a distinctive silhouette which led to its almost legendary status during the Battle of Britain, and its inimitable drone was immediately recognizable to those on the ground. Even now, those who lived through the Battle of Britain can instantly recognize the sound of a Spitfire in the sky.

‘An authoritative history of this iconic fighter by a renowned aviation author’ Ben Dunnell, Editor Aircraft magazine

The Spitfire was produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft and was the only Allied fighter in production throughout the war. This handsome new history looks in detail at the development of the Spitfire from its heroics in the Battle of Britain right through action in the European Theatre, Pacific Theatre and the South-East Asian theatre when it was the backbone of RAF Fighter Command. Much loved by its pilots, the Spitfire saw service in several roles, including interceptor, photo-reconnaissance, fighter-bomber, carrierbased fighter, and trainer; it was built in many different variants, with two different types of engine and several wing configurations. Commissioned especially to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, this striking book will be a fitting tribute to one of the greatest symbols of British wartime success and victory, and provides everything any aviation enthusiast or historian could wish to know about this irreplaceable British icon.
Dr Alfred Price served as an aircrew officer in the Royal Air Force where he flew with the V-Force and specialised in electronic warfare and air fighting tactics. In a military flying career spanning 15 years, he logged over 4,000 flying hours. Since 1974, he has been a full-time writer on aviation subjects and has written more than 46 books. He holds a PhD in history from Loughborough University and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

American Secret Projects: Bombers, Attack and Anti-Submarine Aircraft 1945 to 1974
Famous Russian Aircraft: MiG-15 Yefim Gordon
Tony Buttler
When the Mikoyan Gerevich MiG-15 first appeared in combat against the Western powers during the Korean War it caused consternation amongst its opposition. Its performance far outstripped any jet fighter aircraft produced by the West at the time and its duels with the US F86 Sabre have entered into aviation legend. The success of the MiG-15 was such that it went on to become the most widely produced jet fighter aircraft in history, and although figures vary it is believed over 12,000 were built plus another 6,000 under licence. The protoype of the distinctive fighter, built by the Mikoyan design bureau, with its high swept wing and tailplane and nose intake first flew in 1947, and was first deployed in the Korean War at the start of the 1950s. Although it suffered from handling problems when involved in dogfights with the F86, and a number were shot down, it had been built primarily with the role of interceptor in mind and was highly effective against the US heavy bombers. The MiG-15 was produced in a number of variants, both in single seat and two-seat versions and remained in service as a trainer aircraft for Warsaw Pact countries into the 1970s. Its improved successors, the MiG-17 and MiG-19 became the standard Soviet jet fighters of the early Cold War, including the Vietnam War.
The ‘Secret Projects’ series is now well established with both aviation historians and modellers. American Secret Projects: Bombers, Attack and Anti-Submarine Aircraft 1945-1974 describes the important area of post-World War 2 bomber development in the United States. During the period to the 1970s, the USAF operated several classes of bomber – heavy long-range types for strategic operations, medium bombers and fighter bombers for interdiction and ground support. The US Navy’s own series of attack aircraft and bombers for delivering nuclear weapons, and anti-submarine aircraft are areas examined in considerable depth. Many of the aircraft that entered service or flew only as prototypes resulted from design competitions involving many other proposals which, for one reason or another, never left the drawing board. Following the traditions and format of previous ‘Secret Projects’ titles, this book examines many of these un-built proposals but, at the same time, gives a full overview of American bomber development from 1945 to the early 1970s.

The text opens with the first post-war jets and closes with the Rockwell B-1. It is illustrated with many general arrangement drawings and original manufacturers’ models and artworks and many of the designs have never been seen in print before. Appendices give a list of all known bomber projects plus details of specifications.
Soviet and Russian Ekranoplans Yefim Gordon and Sergey Komissarov Over the years, many new developments have taken place in this particular strand of aviation, both in Russia and in other countries. New projects have emerged; some of them have been built and tested in prototype form, while others represent prospective studies awaiting their implementation. This brilliant book examines many of these projects, as well as revealing new information of historical character that has become available in the recent years. The major part of the book is devoted to the type-by-type description of specific designs of ekranoplans developed in the Soviet Union and present-day Russia in the course of half a century. Special emphasis is made on the activities of Rostislav Alekseyev, who has played an enormous role in the development of this new technology. WIG vehicles created by the Alekseyev-led design bureau include the KM-1, dubbed the ‘Caspian Monster’, the Orlyonok and the Loon’ ekranoplans which remain unsurpassed to this day in terms of size and payload. Special chapters will deal with ekranoplans developed in several other major design bureaux, notably those led by Sukhoi, Bartini and Beriyev. Battle of Britain Airfields Philip Birtles The book begins by providing an excellent background to the Battle of Britain airfields in Britain, describing everything from the range of people working on a typical airfield, including station commanders, pilots, ground crew and civilians, to descriptions of operations and plans of the buildings on an airfield. There is also airfield by airfield coverage of the Battle of Britain, with the layout of each airfield shown alongside its role in the overall battle. This information is complemented by over 150 contemporary photographs, maps and airfield plans. Written by an accomplished military aviation author, this new study is the fruit of many years of research, and will be essential reading for all historians and keen aviation enthusiasts.

Produced for the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain this book brings to life the drama of the summer of 1940, when it seemed that the RAF was Britain’s last defence against imminent German invasion. The book starts with the skirmishes across the Channel in the opening phase of the battle, 10 July-12 August, testing Britain’s defences, then the Luftwaffe’s main assault on the airfields and radar installations of Southern England from 12 August to 6 September, when it attempted to knock out the RAF. The turning point came when the Luftwaffe, faced with mounting losses, shifted its focus to London and other cities in early September in a final attempt to break Britain’s morale, giving the RAF a much-needed breathing space to build up its strength and counter the enemy. Once it became clear to the Germans that they could not achieve air superiority they switched their focus to the night-time bombing raids on centres of population – the Blitz – and the Battle of Britain was over.
US Air Force Unit Designations since 1978 978 1 85780 197 2 £24.99 PB
The book includes personal accounts of the combatants from both sides, both flying crews and ground staff, as well as eye-witness accounts of civilians caught up in the battle illustrate in a dramatic and informative new way key moments and phases during the Battle. Equal attention is given to both the ‘human’ and ‘machine’ aspects and the book features photographs of airfields, control stations and plotting and sector operations rooms, pilots, ground crews, female auxiliaries, the civilian front, anti-aircraft, searchlights, radar stations as well as Fighter, Bomber and Coastal Command aircraft giving a true picture of the scale of the Battle and how it touched the lives of so many civilians when the homeland truly became the front line of World War 2. The text is supplemented with over 200 photographs sourced from private archives, including hitherto unseen pictures together with newly commissioned colour graphics.
‘In this 70th anniversary year of the Battle of Britain, during which the events of 1940 are set to be the subject of commemorative events far and wide, this new title is bound to appeal to a wide readership’ Ben Dunnell, Editor Aircraft magazine

The Air Battles, A-Z
2nd Tactical Air Force, A-Z
Tim McLelland A detailed yet eminently readable photographic history of the development of the TSR-2, with photographs drawn from the BAE Systems Heritage archive at Warton. The author has researched original sources from the BAe archives at Warton Heritage Group, and uses a compelling array of unpublished photographs and material to illustrate the story. This new book will have a wide appeal and will revive the debate about this beautiful but ill-fated aircraft. Although various proposals, under the designation OR (Operational Requirement) 343, were considered for a replacement of the existing Canberra bomber, in 1959 the go-ahead was given to the British Aircraft Corporation submission, named the TSR.2. This stood for Tactical Strike and Reconnaissance 2.

The fate of the TSR.2 was seen by some as a metaphor for the decline of Britain itself. This view was reinforced by the famous aircraft designer Sir Sidney Camm, who said, ‘all modern aircraft have four dimensions: span, length, height and politics. TSR.2 simply got the first three right.’ Although only flown as a prototype, the TSR.2 has become a perennially popular and controversial subject. This book will provide an in-depth and balanced view of the project.

This history of the Luftwaffe gives a fresh and detailed insight into the dramatic rise and fall of one the world’s most formidable air forces. Alongside the detailed analysis of campaigns and strategies, the role of significant individuals in shaping the Luftwaffe’s destiny is also followed so that the human side of the story is given due prominence.

Of all the RAF squadrons that took part in the Battle of Britain, 303 claimed the highest number of enemy aircraft destroyed, despite only entering the Battle in mid-August. Its pilots were experienced veterans from the Polish and French campaigns who had travelled halfway across Europe to continue their fight against the invaders of their homeland. This book uses official documents, journals and private diaries to present a day-by-day record of the ‘Kosciuszko’ squadron’s full blooded participation in the Battle.

FRONTLIST ROAD TRANSPORT
Buses Yearbook 2011
London Transport in the Blitz
Stewart J. Brown
Michael H. C. Baker
Buses Yearbook is the annual publication linked to the monthly magazine Buses; it has been published annually in various guises since the early 1960s and has become one of the fixed points in the enthusiast calendar.
Up until the 20th century warfare was fought on the battlefield; it rarely impacted on the civilian population, unless as with Paris in 1870/71 a major city was under siege. All this changed with the development of aircraft; suddenly there was an additional dimension to warfare. World War 1 saw the first limited raids on urban areas but it was World War 2 that was to force Britain’s towns and cities into the front-line.
The book includes a varied mix of articles and photo-features, both historic and contemporary, covering a wide range of subjects of road transport interest. Recent editions have seen an increased use of colour and this will be maintained. It is simply the very best round up of current, topical and varied features to whet the appetite of bus enthusiasts up and down the country.
Whilst many town and cities — such as Coventry and Plymouth — suffered severe damage, it was the Greater London area that sustained the longest and most damaging onslaught, from the early bombing raids of 1940 through to the V1s and V2s of the later years of the war.

Olympian: Bristol, Leyland, Volvo
Daimler Fleetline
Martin Curtis
Gavin Booth
The Leyland Olympian was probably the last mass-market double-deck bus produced in the UK with several thousand constructed both for the domestic and export market. Apart from the UK, significant sales for the type occurred in, for example, Hong Kong, where a three-axle version was hugely successful.
Produced between 1960 and 1980 when, as the Leyland Fleetline, production ceased, the Daimler Fleetline was the Coventry-based Daimler’s design of rearengined predominantly double-deck bus produced to compete with the slightly earlier Leyland Atlantean. During the 20 years that the model was produced, several thousand examples were constructed. The single biggest customer for the type was London Transport, which acquired some 2646 examples (as the DM/DMS types) following on from the earlier XF order. Other major customers included Birmingham Corporation/West Midlands PTE, which acquired more than 1000 examples including the first of the type to be bodied as singledeckers, and Greater Manchester PTE, which acquired more than 500.
The Olympian’s origins date back to the 1970s with Leyland looking to build upon the earlier B15 (the integrated Titan bought in large numbers by London Transport) and the B45 project (effectively the replacement for the Bristol VR). The first of the Olympians was constructed in 1980, with 350 supplied to London Transport, with customers ranging from many of the PTEs through to municipal operators and constituents of the National Bus Company.
This volume details the development of the Fleetline from its origins in the early 1960s through to the final years of operation.
Under Leyland, the bulk of the production was handled at the company’s Workington factory but, in 1988, Leyland Bus was acquired by Volvo and production was subsequently shifted to Volvo’s factory at Irvine in Scotland. Production of the type ceased in 2000 although many, including some in London, remain in service.

As with the Metropolis more generally, London Transport battled through the war to emerge victorious at the end. This readable book provides an anecdotal rather than detailed history of London Transport during the period between 1939 and 1945. Michael Baker, who was born just before the war and grew up in London during the period, is a master of narrating a good story interweaved with hard facts. This book is based around a series of themes, such as dealing with bomb damage, air raids, make do and mend, that will be drawn from personal reminiscences and stories from local newspapers.

The Elephant Never Forgot: London’s Trams in Retrospect
The Routemaster Michael H. C. Baker
Paul Collins
The Routemaster bus is a universally recognised symbol of London. Developed in the 1950s it has been a familiar sight on the streets of the capital for half a century and still operates on selected heritage routes today. Although developed by AEC for London Transport Routemasters were sold initially also sold to Northern General and second-hand vehicles were later part of the fleets of other operators throughout Britain. Although its open-platform design ultimately led to it being phased out in London in 2005 it is regarded by many as a 20th century icon of British design - when developed its lightweight integral chassis, independent front suspension, fully automatic gearbox and power-hydraulic braking put it well in advance of most rival buses.
Following on from the author’s previous book on the subject, this volume looks at several new areas which give further insights into the development and operation of London trams from the 1860s to the current Croydon Tramlink, through contemporary reports published in journals. Topic areas include: - The operation of G F Train’s three lines in the early 1860s - Horse trams - Experimental forms of motive power tested in London in the 1880s and 1890s - The experimental overhead line at Alexandra Palace - London’s cable tramways - Operation of the conduit system - Enlargement of the Kingsway Subway - Tramcar maintenance - The planning of Operation Tramway - Filming ‘The Elephant Will Never Forget’ - Croydon Tramlink Ian Allan Publishing | September 2010 | Printed Paper Cased 235 x 172mm | 96pp | c160 mono illustrations 978 0 71103 509 6 | £16.99

This volume tells the story of the Routemaster’s development and operational history in London and elsewhere, accompanied by approximately 100 colour illustrations of the vehicle from prototypes through the changing operational scene of the last 50 years to its continuing existence today.
A fascinating snapshot of the tramways of London perfect for anyone interested in London’s rich transport history, this book is certain to be popular with transport enthusiasts nationwide.
The Little Red Book 2011 As in every year The Little Red Book has been fully updated to provide detailed information on bus and coach operators throughout Britain. It also includes information on suppliers, societies, licensing bodies and many other topics and subjects; essential information for all those working in the industry. The Little Red Book is greatly respected by those involved in the bus and coach industry, as it has been published annually now for more than 60 years. A copy of the new 2011 edition of The Little Red Book is an essential reference-tool for anyone interested, either professionally or as an enthusiast, in the road passenger transport industry in the British Isles.

The French Foreign Legion
Secret War in Italy: Special Forces, Partisans and Covert Operations 1943-45
Douglas Boyd
William Fowler
An eminently readable history of the French Foreign legion, lifting the veil of myth and secrecy that has surrounded it in recent popular culture, by expert historian Douglas Boyd. The French Foreign Legion is an extraordinary and unique army, specifically created for foreign nationals wishing to serve in the French Armed Forces, but commanded by French officers. For nearly two centuries adventure seekers or men on the run from all around the globe have found a home in the Foreign Legion and shed blood for France. Even today, the British are one of the largest foreign contingents in the world’s longest standing mercenary army. In this book author Douglas Boyd has been given unrivalled access to the Legion to tell its story from its inception in the 1830s, when it was primarily used to protect and expand the French colonial empire during the 19th century, but it has also fought in almost all French wars including the Franco-Prussian War and both World Wars. The Foreign Legion has remained an important part of the French Army, surviving three Republics, one empire, two World Wars, the rise and fall of mass conscript armies, the dismantling of the French colonial empire and the French loss of the legion’s homeland, Algeria. The Legion is today known as an elite military unit whose training focuses not only on traditional military skills but also on its strong esprit de corps. As its men come from different countries with different cultures, this is a widely accepted solution to strengthen them enough to work as a team. Consequently, training is often described as not only physically challenging, but also extremely psychologically stressful. To give the reader a feeling of what it has been like to soldier in the Legion the author has distilled many personal experiences from his own interviews and the Legion’s archives. His knowledge of French history and politics also enables him to place the Legion’s activities in context - often what motivates the Legion is different from the mainstream politics of the French government. ‘The Legion is still renowned as a fighting force (where) men seek the limits of their endurance. Boyd’s magnificent survey embraces all the adventurers who agreed to ‘march or die’ for France.’ Oxford Times ‘A tight and fascinating history of nearly two centuries of the Legion’s activities.’ Brigadier Anthony Hunter-Choat, Britain’s senior exlegionnaire
The object of romance and myth-making, Douglas Boyd lifts the veil of secrecy surrounding the Legion to portray its true story.
Douglas Boyd has been a full-time writer since moving to France three decades ago, and previously worked as a producer for BBC TV. He has published numerous titles on historical subjects, including the hardback edition of The French Foreign Legion with Sutton in 2006. He is currently writing books on the Cold War and Russian imperialism and occupied Normandy in World War 2 for Ian Allan Publishing.
‘A brilliant account of this unique army.’ Colonel Philippe Dufour, who elected Douglas Boyd an honorary ex-legionnaire on the strength of this book

The war in Italy was characterised by a host of special forces actions. The fact that the Italians had formed two governments, one backing the Allies and one a puppet German government, meant that the secret war was vital to the Allies conventional forces and partisans, the SAS, SOE, the US OSS (precursor to the CIA) all played important roles. On the night of 20/21 April 1945 the last operational jump of World War 2 took place — Operation Herring. The airborne action was undertaken by No 1 Italian SAS, trained by British SOE (Special Operations Executive) forces who were dropped by the USAAF, in support of the 8th Army attack into the Po Valley. Operation Herring lasted over 72 hours instead of the 36 initially foreseen, but it turned out to be a success. With some help on the part of the local partisan groups, according to some sources 481 German soldiers were killed, 1,083 surrendered, 44 vehicles were destroyed and many captured including some tanks, armored cars and guns, 77 telephone lines severed, three bridges taken intact, and an ammunition storage site blown up. The action did presage the end of the Italian campaign and the war in Italy, but until now little has been written about this, and other secret operations, on the Italian front. This fascinating book will be an essential reference for students of World War 2. Ian Allan Publishing | July 2010 | Paperback | 198 x 129mm | 300pp | 978 0 71103 528 7 | £8.99
Kharkov 1942: Anatomy of a Military Disaster Through Soviet Eyes David M. Glantz In May 1942 the powerful German Wehrmacht and the massive Soviet Red Army were engaged in a bitter struggle. The initially rapid advance of the Wehrmacht deep into the Soviet Union against the Red Army had been halted by the spring of 1941. Red Army counter-offensives had stopped the German advance at Moscow by the spring of 1942 and the Soviet leadership was convinced the Wehrmacht was fatally stretched. A counter-thrust by the Red Army at the southern end of the front line, near the town of Kharkov, would, they imagined, be a vital step in pushing the German Army back. The reality was very different. Soviet overconfidence meant that hundreds of thousands of their soldiers were to lose their lives in one of the most catastrophic offensives in Russian military history. For over half a century the Soviets kept the scale of their defeat secret. Their victory at the second battle of Kharkov the following year also enabled them to obscure this event. Only in the last decade were the documents made generally available for the first time to reveal the true story of the battle. David M. Glantz, a leading expert on Soviet military strategy and operational art, has drawn on contemporary reports and later documents to present a detailed analysis of Soviet military techniques and the scale of the Soviet defeat.

Paul Gannon When the German cruiser Magdeburg ran aground off the Estonian coast in August 1914, little did the British Admiralty realise that what was onboard the ill-fated vessel would hand them a decisive advantage in the battle for North Sea supremacy, and subsequently lead to the birth of the Government Communications Headquarters. Onboard the Magdeburg was a collection of clandestine codebooks and maps, containing coded squares, which offered invaluable clues as to the whereabouts of the German High Seas Fleet. Before long, the codebooks used by German warships, U-Boats and naval Zeppelins, and the ciphers used by the Germans to communicate with their naval attachés and embassies, had also fallen into the Admiralty’s possession. This book profiles those who worked within the smoky, claustrophobic confines of Room 40, their sometimes trying relations with one another, as well as analyses the vital parts each member played throughout the conflict. Critically, their knowledge of the infamous Zimmerman Telegram, the U-Boat menace and the tragic and controversial sinking of the Lusitania, placed them, sometimes reluctantly, at the vanguard of all British naval strategy. Several of those in Room 40 would later go on to break the Enigma codes at Bletchley Park during World War 2, however, the contributions made by these modest few during our nation’s darkest episode were just as crucial and cannot be underestimated in their importance. Christopher J. Ailsby As German military awards have spiraled in value in recent years, the Collector’s Guide to German Nazi Party Awards 1919-1945 provides a useful and practical guide for collectors of such memorabilia. The book features 80-90 medals, fully illustrated from the author’s extensive collection, including such medals like the Munich Putsch, Blood Order and the German Order which in current market conditions are expected to fetch over £20,000-£100,000 each. Unlike military medals within the Third Reich structure, the Nazi Party Awards were issued within the Nazi hierarchy as well as to foreigners; the Art and Science Award being deemed as the Nobel Prize, for example. The latter was encrusted in platinum and diamonds and only one copy is known to exist and was presented to the Third Reich’s vice chancellor (the medal resides in Christopher Ailsby’s collection).

Lost League Football Grounds
Aerofilms Guide to Football Grounds, 18th Edition
Michael Heatley
First published in 1993 and hugely popular ever since, this annual guide covers all the football grounds in the Premier and Championship leagues in England and Wales. Published in August at the start of the new football season, this book has become an indispensable reference guide for football fans.
In the 20 years since the Bradford City Fire and the Hillsborough Disaster, virtually a third of all teams currently playing in the top four divisions of English football have relocated and this is a process that is continuing rapidly. Currently under construction or at an advanced planning stage are new grounds for teams like Everton, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Southend United and Cardiff City.
The new edition includes any new league grounds and clubs entering the league, as well as updated plans of the existing grounds identifying blocks and disabled facilities. There is also a brief sketch of each club’s season. An aerial photo-map of each ground is featured, with plenty of useful information on public transport facilities, where to park and much else. Its winning combination of vivid aerial photography and invaluable information provides fans with an unmatchable graphic portrait of how grounds have changed. This year, Aerofilms Guide maintains and builds upon its position as the best illustrated guide for the travelling football supporter of Premier League and League football in England and Wales, and will be essential reading for all football fans.

Non-League Football Fact Book Michael Heatley Football is undoubtedly Britain’s most popular spectator sport but many fans regard the stratospheric rise of Britain’s top level of football with mixed feelings. As the game moves further and further from its roots, fans are increasingly turning to non-League football to recapture the local spirit of the game and enjoy the close-up quirks and oddities. In this book Michael Heatley examines the history of the numerous non-League clubs in England, many of which have been in existence as long as their League counterparts. Topics covered include: - Histories of the FA Trophy - FA Vase and Amateur Cup (and why it no longer exists) - Celebrity supporters - Fans’ tales - Famous players/managers who started in non-League - Famous clubs that started as non-League - The Non-League Pyramid - Name changes - Local rivalries - Attendance records - Most successful non-League teams/managers of all time - Notable games - Ground grading regulations Other areas examined include histories of the most important leagues, a full explanation of the Pyramid system, an overview of geographical anomalies and how they split clubs into leagues, and much more. Essential reading for serious historians of our national game, it is certain to appeal to all lovers of football, past and present.

During this period a number of the most famous grounds in the country — such as Highbury (Arsenal), Maine Road (Manchester City), Ayresome Park (Middlesbrough), Roker Park (Sunderland) and Leeds Road (Huddersfield Town) — have all disappeared. Most of the ‘lost’ grounds have been demolished with virtually no trace of the original ground left whilst others survived for a period in some form of half-life, being used for example for reserve team matches. But even these have for the most part now disappeared as well. This book incorporates photographs of the ground both from inside and out along with items of memorabilia such as programmes.
Football Grounds from the Air: Then & Now (5th Edition) First published in 1998 as a spin-off from the annual Aerofilms Guide: Football Grounds, Football Grounds from the Air: Then & Now has now passed through four editions, with the second being published in 2001, the third in 2004 and the fourth in 2007. Covering each of the 92 clubs in the Premier and Football leagues, the book provides an historical view of the club’s ground alongside a contemporary shot of the ground as it currently exists. In the period since the fourth edition was produced a number of clubs — Cardiff, Colchester and Rotherham — have completely relocated whilst others—such as Sheffield United, Oldham, Watford and Leyton Orient, for example — have undergone significant changes. Apart from the changes to these grounds, the onset of automatic promotion/relegation between the league and conference now ensures that two clubs drop out from League 2 to be replaced by two from the conference. Whilst sometimes this results in former league clubs regaining their status, it can also mean that traditional non-league teams such as Dagenham & Redbridge and Burton Albion can enter football’s higher echelons whilst ersthwhile league teams — such as Accrington, Aldershot and Exeter — can return to the league after an absence of many years. This book is a fully revised and updated volume and, as with the last edition, the contemporary shots will be printed in colour.

Nick Cotton Cycling remains one of the most popular leisure activities in Britain today, and continuing numbers of people are taking up the sport whether for leisure enjoyment for all the family, or for health and environmental reasons. The Midlands has a high density of towns and cities and because of the congested and dangerous roads there is a growing need for a useful guide to safe, traffic-free cycling around the area. Cyclists living in the area want quick, easy access to a range of enjoyable new cycling routes where they can quickly escape from their usual crowded environment and explore quiet routes in attractive natural or man-made surroundings. In recent years there have been many initiatives to develop traffic-free routes through national or local government schemes and organisations such as Sustrans, but it is often impracticable for leisure cyclists to keep right up to date with the latest information on the many thousands of miles of paths and lanes where it is possible, and legal, for cyclists to pursue their hobby away from traffic. All the more welcome then is this brand new title from experienced author and cyclist Nick Cotton who brings together 30 of the best routes in the Midlands and the Peak District. As well as offering practical general advice for the cyclist, the author gives clear instructions for each route, a useful diagrammatic map, suggestions on where best to park and/or start the trip, distance, gradients and hills, places of interest and suggested refreshment stops along the way or close to the route. The Kremlin Conspiracy: A Long, Hot and Cold War
Vlad the Impaler: Son of the Devil, Hero of the People Gavin Baddeley and Paul Woods
Douglas Boyd
Vlad the Impaler: Son of the Devil, Hero of the People not only brings to life one of history’s most compelling and brutal characters, but traces his bizarre afterlife. A hero to his countrymen, Vlad Dracula became a byword for dread. Not just for generations of Western fans of Gothic fiction and film, but also for his 15th century contemporaries, whose appalled fascination made accounts of Dracula’s atrocities into the world’s first horror bestsellers. Combining historical research and dramatic reconstruction, with groundbreaking contemporary reference, Vlad the Impaler includes:
A brilliant and chilling new history revealing author Douglas Boyd’s theory that Russia’s latest energy war with the West is just the latest phase in 1,000 years of Russian expansionism! Although the Cold War conventionally ended in the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 there is renewed interest and concern in the West about our relations with a resurgent Russia. Arguably the Cold War was just one manifestation of an ages-old geopolitical conflict between Russia and other world powers. Russian-speaking Kremlin-watcher Douglas Boyd starts by tracing Russia’s growth through centuries of hot wars of conquest that expanded the tiny principality of Muscovy to an empire straddling Europe and Asia. Its expansionism was evident throughout the last century, often conducted by proxy during the Cold War. With enormous reserves of energy and natural resources on which other nations are increasingly reliant, Putin’s Russia is once again flexing its muscles. This powerful book begins with an account of the author’s imprisonment in a Stasi interrogation centre in East Germany. Told in a strong narrative style intermingling historical events with first-person quotes of the principal participants, The Kremlin Conspiracy puts it all into perspective, showing that the energy war launched by Medvedev/Putin is just the latest phase in 1,000 years of Russian expansionism. Events are often recounted in the actual words of participants – a technique the author has used before - spies and spy-catchers, generals, National Servicemen intelligencegathering in Berlin and slipping across the Baltic by night on ex-Kriegsmarine MTBs, the US and British nuclear submarine commanders who played chicken with Soviet ‘boomers,’ the pilots like Gary Powers who flew into Soviet airspace to test radar and on photographic over-flights – they all have a say. But so too do politicians, journalists, history teachers and schoolchildren, not forgetting the women of Greenham Common. The implosion of the USSR in 1989-1991 was not a victory for the West, but due to the impossibility for Soviet central planning and one-party government to adapt to the economic realities of the approaching 21st century. With Putin’s new-style economy having leap-frogged all that, the Hot and Cold War is on again, with Russia more powerful than ever. That is Boyd’s alarming message.
Douglas Boyd was employed on the NATO front line in the divided city of Berlin as an RAF Russian linguist. Having also visited East Berlin many times, he achieved the ultimate East German experience of solitary confinement in a Stasi prison after being caught on the wrong side of the border. On return to Britain, he was employed for several years as a Russian specialist by the Rank Organisation before leaving to head the BBC Eurovision office, where he liased with Intervision, representing the national broadcasting organisations in eastern Europe. In subsequent years as a BBC Television Producer, he produced and directed several co-productions with east European state broadcasting organisations.

Blood of Kings: The Stuarts, The Ruthvens and the ‘Gowrie Conspiracy’ J. D. Davies Blood of Kings is a story of murder, lust for power and revenge. Of a plot to kill King James Stuart that proved far more dangerous to his life than the nearly contemporary Gunpowder Plot. Of a plot so devilish that Shakespeare used it as the basis for Macbeth. Of a mighty dynasty humiliated during the posthumous trial of two decomposing corpses propped up in a courtroom. Of lords who dabbled in black magic and were immortalised as warlocks and vampires. Of noblemen who deposed a queen and kidnapped a king. Of the dark conspiracies that formed during the dying days of Queen Elizabeth the First. Blood of Kings also reveals startling evidence that links the ‘Gowrie Conspiracy’ of 1600 to an assassination that changed the course of European history, and considers the possibility that the bloodline of Mary Queen of Scots – down to and including the present royal family – might have no legitimate right to the throne. The book focuses on the ‘Gowrie conspiracy’ of 1600. On 5 August of that year, John Ruthven, third Earl of Gowrie, and his brother Alexander, were killed in mysterious circumstances in front of King James VI of Scots, soon to be James I of England, at Gowrie House in Perth. King James alleged that he had been lured there under false pretences, which centred on a tale of a mysterious stranger carrying a pot of gold, and that the Ruthven brothers had then attempted to assassinate him. Simon Read Amidst the chaos of wartime London, criminals hunted their prey without fear of reprisal. Many operated under the cover of darkness, emerging when the city sank into the oblivion of its nightly blackout; others simply struck whenever opportunity presented itself. At a time when Londoners were pulling together in the face of terrible adversity, there were an increasing number of looters, racketeers, terrorists, criminal gangs, prostitutes, rapists and murderers stalking the bomb-ravaged, panic-ridden streets, and this book chronicles the rapid rise of crime throughout this turbulent period. The deprivations of war forced many onto the wrong side of the law, stretching the resources of London’s Metropolitan Police Department to the limit. Air raids and the dangers of patrolling London in the dark cost the police more than 100 men during World War 2. Petrol rationing and mandatory radio silence placed limits on the department’s mobility and communications. Despite such challenges, the Yard continued to tackle, as best it could, both routine crime and more sinister deeds born of bombs and blackouts. Indeed, wartime London was a criminal’s paradise. The number of bodies being retrieved during the Blitz made it virtually impossible for authorities to perform autopsies on all of them. The question soon arose: Who were the victims of bombings, and who had simply been murdered? Coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the London Blitz, renowned crime writer Simon Read paints a vivid picture of what life was really like in 1940s London, and profiles the crimes of its most notorious perpetrators, including the Blackout Ripper, Chicago Joe, the Elephant Boys, and the infamous Rillington Place Murderer, John Reginald Christie.

Glory Days, A-Z
Since the bestselling Titanic: The Ship That Never Sank was published in 1998 author Robin Gardiner has unearthed a wealth of new evidence for his theory that the sinking of Titanic was a vast conspiracy, and that the ship that went down on April 12 was in fact Olympic, Titanic’s sister ship, and the sinking was planned as one of the world’s greatest insurance frauds. To the present day the most common maritime insurance fraud involves changing identities of ships. But tragically the planned staging of the sinking of Titanic, whereby other ships from the company would be on hand to rescue all the passengers and crew, went disastrously wrong and 1500 souls perished on the supposedly unsinkable ship’s maiden voyage. This book concentrates on the conspiracy, with evidence of why the White Star company intended to defraud the insurance company by swapping the identity of Titanic and the recently damaged Olympic in a collision with HMS Hawke, with new conclusive photographic and documentary evidence of the swap.

Robin Gardiner has lived all his life in Oxford City. After leaving school he trained in light engineering but at 17 became a “telegram boy”, taking his motor cycle test on a Post Office BSA Bantam. He rode motor bikes for many years and still has an affection for British classics, resurrecting one or two over the years. He later went into plastering, being trained by a friend’s father. He became interested maritime history, in particular “Titanic”, as a young man and over the years became increasingly unhappy with the “story as it is told”. Hence his research became more detailed and eventually led to his series of books on the subject.

Becoming a Ninja Warrior: A Quest to Recover the Secret Legacy of Japan’s Most Secret Warriors

Island Fever Robin Jones
Martin Faulks
GENERAL
Britain’s big strength is that it is an island nation. However, we often forget that it boasts hundreds of smaller islands off its shores, each with a distinct character of its own. This book concentrates on the islands of England and Wales showing a mixture of contemporary photographs and archive material to capture the unique atmosphere of each island. Highlights include:
Experience one man’s revelatory journey to discover the secrets of the Ninja, the deadly silent assassins of ancient Japan, and uncover that perhaps not all we have been told about them in the West is true. The popular modern archetype of a Ninja is a martial arts master in a black suit who uses silent cunning, and exotic weapons to assassinate his opponents. But this image comes from films, cartoons, comic books and novels. The Ninja is completely misunderstood in Western society.
A large format photographic journey around the many islands located off Britain’s coastline, each one reavealing its own unique and characterful identity, illustrated with stunning photography.
Join the amazing journey as one man travels the globe in search of the secret art of the Ninja. Discover the mystical trials of Earth, Air, Fire and Water used by great Ninjutsu masters to teach their students the secrets of the elements. If one man can really walk through flames and over hot coals, face deadly mountain drops without fear, overcoming pain to resist the freezing waterfall beating down upon him and face his darkest fears in terrible solitude, maybe then he may earn the title of Ninja! More than just an adventure book this book teaches you all the skills you need to be a Ninja yourself, covering such diverse subjects as - Unarmed Combat, Mastering the Four Elements, Meditation, Pick Pocketing, Lock Picking, Stealth, Kuji-in, Shuriken Throwing, Chain Weapons, Cat Claws, Climbing Techniques, Sword Fighting, Disguise, Ninja Strategy, The Art of Lying and Deception, Sensing Danger, Honing the Senses, Mind Control, Smoke Bombs, Explosives, Caltrops, Bugs and De-bugging, Techniques of Investigation and knowing the mind of others, Night Sights, Escape and Evasion, Instant Knock Out strikes, throws, arm locks, Skeleton Keys, The art of Invisibility and much, much more. Martin Faulks has been a student of the oriental martial arts since he was five years old. He is a three times national martial arts champion and holds black belts in both the Korean martial art Kuk Sool Won and Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu (Japanese Ninjutsu), is proficient in the mystical disciplines of China, including Tai Chi, meditation, Qi Gong and the legendary form of Yi Jin Jing.
“Becoming the Ninja describes the personal journey of a 21st Century warrior seeker who just would not be content with the mediocrity and mere ego gratification he found permeating so many martial arts. Like my own story of almost 40 years ago, his quest for authentic ninja warrior training drove him around the world on a search for the authentic that offered little guarantee of success. I am happy to have been part of Martin’s adventure and am curious to see where his path will take him next.”

Seaspray and Whisky
An Illustrated History of the Knights Hospitaller
Norman Freeman
Stephen Dafoe
Originally published in Ireland in 1993, this beautifully written book is a true story of how a dodgy crew of misfits drank their way through a cargo of whisky as they crossed the Atlantic in their tramp steamer, only to face arrest when they reached America. The story is told through a lively narrative, as described through the eyes of a young Irish Radio Officer who signs up for a tour of duty on a ship commanded and crewed by a collection of wild and wacky characters. Through the long voyage from Liverpool to New Orleans and further on to Houston, the group discover a large cargo of Scotch whisky bottles, resulting in an experience that proved to be the both best and worst of the author’s life.
This richly illustrated book recounts the entire history of the Knights Hospitaller, from their beginnings nine centuries ago to the present day. Founded during the medieval crusades - their full name is the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem - to run hospices. They grew in power and royal favour, conquering territories, including the island of Malta, with which they have long been associated, and Rhodes, building formidable castles such as Krak de Chevaliers in the Middle East. For a while they led the fight against the Barbary pirates in the Mediterranean but the increasing power of European nations meant that their territory and powers were gradually taken away in the ensuing centuries but they still survive today.
Seaspray and Whisky is a genuinely entertaining and funny story. Certain to appeal to a very wider readership, this is a must-have read for anyone who has unexpectedly fallen into an extraordinary adventure and which left them with memories of a lifetime.
There is renewed interest in the crusades and associated military orders and in this book author Stephen Dafoe not only reveals the story of the knights but also their changing relationship with the world around them.

“The gratitude of every home in our Island, in our Empire, and indeed throughout the world, except in the abodes of the guilty, goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of the World War by their prowess and by their devotion. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” Sir Winston Churchill, 1940
