Illini Union ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018
Executive SUMMARY The 2017-2018 Illini Union Annual Report provides insight into the activities and progress towards the four overarching goals identified in the organization’s 2015-2017 Strategic Plan throughout the past academic year. Our mission, vision, values, and goals have provided crucial direction to drive the organization’s work and focus its priorities. The Illini Union’s overall goal is to serve as the campus community center and to complement the academic mission of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This is achieved by building an inclusive community and providing engaging programs, outstanding services, and state-of-the-art facilities. The Illini Union’s commitment to its mission, vision, and values is the cornerstone of our tradition of excellence.
With nearly 2.5 million visitors annually, the Illini Union continues to thrive as a reflection of the vibrant and diverse student body of Illinois, and serves as the iconic student center of campus. We are working to guarantee that the Illini Union will remain a campus landmark well into the future. This past year, the Illini Union engaged with students and other campus and community stakeholders to develop a comprehensive plan that lays the foundation for a well-maintained, state-of-the-art facility offering

inviting, comfortable, flexible spaces with cutting-edge programs for the next 50 years. As this work progresses, we continue to be innovative through the implementation of new programs and services that meet the campus community’s evolving wants and needs. The Illini Union provides growth and development opportunities through each of its programs and services. Collectively, Illini Union units and staff, including our Illini Union Board, Office of Volunteer Programs, Rec Room, Courtyard Café, and Illini Union Welcome Week efforts hosted 613 events which attracted 123,638 participants during 2017-2018. Our Registered Organizations staff worked with 1,087 Registered Student Organizations and processed nearly 22,185 space requests last year. The Parent and Family Programs Office (PFPO) connected with more than 32,800 families of Illinois students, sharing information about the resources and services available to them as members of the Illinois family. The Office of Volunteer Programs (OVP) collected 4,105 pounds of food, 500 toys, and distributed 412 Thanksgiving Baskets to those in need in our community. Our retail student employees served over one million customers across multiple operations. All of these co-curricular experiences help our students grow during their college years and prepare them for the future.
The Illini Union welcomed new members to our operations team with the opening of Jitters Café at the College of Law. New partnerships this past year also include Garbanzo in the lower level of the Union, Einstein Bros. Bagels at the Armory, and a brand new Nike store in the Illini Union Bookstore. The Illini Union implemented all of these new services based on data collected from the annual assessment of our students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, a collaborative partnership with our University Housing and Dining Services colleagues will ensure that students will continue to have a dining option in the heart of campus, at the Illini Union, during the Illinois Street Residence Hall Dining renovation. This project will also provide much needed improvements to the Illini Union kitchen area and a new, larger,

Accomplishments & HIGHLIGHTS The Illini Union reconnected with two former Illini Union Board (IU Board) members, one who was also a former staff member, this past year. Michael Leach, former IU Board member and now on staff at the National Football League (NFL), returned during Homecoming week last fall. He graciously spent several hours of his time talking with current students about the impact of his experience as a student at Illinois and how it supported his post-graduation life. Kathy Guthrie, a former IU Board member and former staff in Student Programs and Activities, returned home as part of an Illinois Leadership Program and presented to the Illini Union staff about the importance of navigating change. Kathy shared her passion for her experience as both a student and young professional and how that experience launched her student affairs career; her love for Illinois
was the recurring theme during her presentations and stay. Interviews with both were videotaped for use in upcoming alumni newsletters.
The Illini Union hosted graduate students from Eastern Illinois University as they prepared their final semester project. Their goal was to examine the Illini Union and campus through four frames: the physical, human aggregate, organizational, and constructed. They visited campus multiple times throughout the spring semester
and met with the director and the assistant to the director. Their final report offered recommendations regarding all four frames, and served as a research resource for the Illini Union Staff Retreat in May 2018. The Illini Union supported the Vice Chancellor’s Office and Auxiliary Shared Services through a range of formal and informal functions. Both Illini Union Business Affairs and Illini Union Human Resources and Administrative Services provided shared service support to Parking, Auxiliary Shared Technology Services (ASTS), and Campus Mail. Illini Union Marketing provided support to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affair’s Office and Auxiliary Shared Services via marketing, branding, website design, and communication support.

OVP sponsored five iEngage Service Trips throughout the 2017-2018 academic year. Destinations included Weldon Springs State Park; Rabbit Hash, KY; St. Louis, MO; Chicago, IL; and Indianapolis, IN. The combined total of 170 participants completed an estimated 490 service hours, performing tasks such as cleaning up rivers and collecting debris and trash. The 11th annual OVP Thanksgiving Basket Drive collected 412 baskets and $2,100 worth of gift cards.
Rec Room The Rec Room hosted its first Team Pool Championship in October 2017. The Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) campus community continues to be strong through the efforts of the DDR Illini registered student organization. It held both a fall and spring “regional” ITG2 Tournament with participants from all over the country and even internationally. The spring event drew in its largest crowd ever with 115 people for the three-day event.
The 15th Annual Holiday Toy Drive brought in 18 boxes of donated toys totaling approximately 500 toys. These were then donated to Toys for Tots. OVP held the 2018 MLK Day of Service event in the Illini Union where Chancellor Jones welcomed nearly 300 participants.
Courtyard Café In the spring semester, the Courtyard Café launched a new weekly program called
Students in the Pine Lounge
Courtyard Karaoke, which saw a steady increase in attendance as the semester progressed. This program resulted in the Courtyard Café being nominated as Buzz Magazine’s “Best of CU” Best Karaoke Venue.
Human Resources The Illini Union Human Resources and Administrative Shared Services Office successfully implemented biometric time clocks in various locations throughout the organization. The new time clocks will provide a more efficient and effective process for tracking and reporting, processing, and approvals of staff time.
Facilities The Illini Union facilities continues to create innovative co-curricular learning opportunities for architectural and engineering students. Students have designed smaller scale renovation projects with the collaboration of Facilities
and Services Engineering for the Tech Zone Retina Repair Center, as well as 3D renderings of conceptual interiors for the Hotel, and a new pizza concept store. Students developed 3D modeling of the Union facilities and building systems that directly supported implementation of a new work order system collaboration with University Housing. The Illini Union facilities staff continues to develop professional ties to the School of Architecture and College of Engineering. Significantly, all student employees hired in the past year secured jobs at top international design firms.
PFPO The Illini Union Parent and Family Programs Office (PFPO) created a video that was shown during the Parent and Family Summer Registration presentation. The video featured the presidents of the Moms Association and the Dads Association, welcoming
incoming family members to the university and the Moms and Dads Associations.
In collaboration with New Student Programs and International Student and Scholar Services, the PFPO implemented a multiple-day orientation for international families. The international parent and family orientation was three days of activities and events and included a social hour where families mingled, shared stories, and made new connections. The PFPO hosted a new collaboration with Dean of Students office (DOS), a family sendoff. More than 200 people attended and were able to get essential resources from the Dean of Students office.

response to an incident in a corporate Starbucks store involving a racially biased event. The stores were closed for the afternoon of May 29, in order to allow all employees to participate in the workshop. The Quad Shop created an international snacks section to better serve our diverse student population. The Illini Union Bookstore celebrated its 13th annual One Book One Campus program with the book Ms. Marvel #1: No Normal by G. Willow Wilson. It was the first book chosen for the program in the graphic novel format. The Illini Union Tech Zone began a new alumni program with Apple where educational pricing is now extended to all University of Illinois alumni. The Illini Union Tech Zone improved and updated college-specific
computer recommendations for every campus major created with extensive and continuous conversations with academic departments, collaborating with Technology Services, and gathering information from our student employees and customers. We support the diversity of our students by translating these recommendations into five different languages (French, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean) for the International Student check-in every August. In response to student desires for more fresh, healthy, and culturally sensitive offerings, the Illini Union opened Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill in the lower level of the Illini Union in March 2018 and Einstein Bros. Bagels in the Armory also in March 2018. The Illini Union successfully implemented Illini Cash at all campus Coca-Cola vending machines in June 2018.

Retail Operations (cont.) The Illini Union provided a series of very successful vendor outreach programs, including the end-of-theyear student picnic on Anniversary Plaza.
Assessment Projects In FY18, Campus Vending introduced a Student Secret Shopper program for the thirdparty vendor restaurants. Each vendor was secretly shopped once per month during the school year.
Diversity New International Student Fun Night held in the Rec Room had an attendance of 750 this past year. Illini Union Human Resources and Administrative Shared Services collaborated with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Access to align recruitment practices as well as
advertising partner to strategically meet the goals of the unit, Student Affairs, and the University. The newly implemented international parent orientation was instrumental in meeting our diverse parent and family population. Families from at least 12 different countries attended the session.
Change In FY18, Campus Vending began highlighting products with factors that the students identified as being important to them—vegan, vegetarian, top 10 allergies, customized/made-to-order, and price point. This promoted an increase in sales in areas where these items were available. Einstein Bros. Bagels in the Seibel Center underwent a complete refresh.
Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill moved into the lower level of the Illini Union. Campus Vending introduced a new cooking oil collection station where the used oil from the restaurant partners will be recycled into biofuel options. The Illini Union Hotel made updates in hotel amenities, including wall pictures in hotel rooms by local artist/photographer Larry Kanfer, posters in the hotel hallways, new orange ‘Block I’ pillows, new lamps, new furniture hardware, new bedding, blackout shades, and updated door signage for each room.
