Role of the Illini Union Parent and Family Programs Office Zuri White – Parent & Family Programs Manager The Parent and Family Programs Office has developed Parent and Family Learning Outcomes that we believe will help you navigate your student’s transition from an adolescent to an independent young adult.

Expected Parent and Family Outcomes: • Understand the developmental changes parents and families experience when children embark on their collegiate careers. • Be an effective mentor and coach for your college student. • Understand the college experience your student is having in today’s higher education environment. • Establish a level of involvement in your student’s collegiate career that is beneficial to you, your child, and the university community. Know when and how to em-

power your student to take responsibility. • Establish regular communication with parents and families of all Illinois students, developing critical partnerships. • Educate families to their new roles as the parents of a college student and to their development as parents, including how their lives are changing and examining how they are feeling and thinking. • Provide parents of Illinois students with the information and tools they need to become effective mentors and coaches to their college students throughout their collegiate careers. • Provide volunteer opportunities for parents and families that keep them connected to the university community and encourage the development of relationships among fellow Illini parents/ families, the university, and the Moms and Dads Associations.

The decision has been made. Your student has chosen Illinois. There are so many things that you and your student will have to do as you prepare for the upcoming school year. And nothing is more important than the upcoming Summer Registration. Summer Registration is a mandatory one-day program for all incoming students, marking the start of their college experience at Illinois. Your student will learn all about their college of choice; meet with

various faculty, staff, and fellow students; learn about the various student support services that are available; and register for classes. Simultaneously, at Parent and Family Orientation you will learn about resources available to families and finding a healthy balance of involvement. Topics such as how to pay bills and access to student records will be discussed. Below is what your day will look like.

Welcome from UIPD

Patrick Wade – Communications Director, University of Illinois Police Department As they arrive in ChampaignUrbana, members of our new class of students will become a crucial part of our campus community, and public safety officials want new students to be aware of the resources available to them as they embark on their new journey. The University of Illinois Police Department (UIPD) realizes that, for many of our students, going away to college is the first time they are spending an extended period of time away from home — and that can create understandable anxiety for the people looking out for them. UIPD has a staff of 65 sworn police officers and a large contingent of civilian staff, security officers, and supervisors who spend 24 hours a day focusing on one mission: the safety and security of the community they serve. While UIPD is fortunate to say that the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign has a very safe campus, the reality is that a large campus community of about 60,000 will never be entirely crime free. That’s why UIPD is here, but police and other public safety officials cannot do it alone. Safety is a campus wide effort, and UIPD relies on the assistance of our community members and on the partnerships it has forged with various groups. Incoming students are now a

crucial part of that community effort. It is imperative that our new community members take a few moments to familiarize themselves with UIPD. The best way is to take a couple of minutes to browse our website at police.illinois.edu. Please look over basic safety tips at go.illinois.edu/ safety and encourage your students to do the same. And please follow UIPD on Twitter (@UIPD), look for it on Facebook (facebook. com/UIpolice), and subscribe to the UIPD news feed (go.illinois.edu/ UIPDNews) for regular updates on everything related to public safety on campus. All are encouraged to explore the division’s SafeWalks program (go.illinois.edu/safewalks), and students are encouraged to download the mobile app that enables them to conveniently contact a safety escort. Students should not hesitate to contact the police department if they observe unusual or suspicious behavior, and especially if they feel their own or someone else’s safety is at risk. Public safety officials are always happy to speak with anyone. UIPD can be reached 24 hours a day at (217) 333-1216 for non-emergency issues. We thank all new students and their families for being active participants in the safety of our entire campus community.

Get Involved! The Moms and Dads Associations are two separate, non-profit entities that strive to serve all students at the University of Illinois. There are many ways to get involved in the Associations. The Associations rely on volunteers for the success of their programs. Some volunteer opportunities include Summer Registration, Moms Weekend, Dads Weekend, and Admitted Student Days. If you’re looking to get even more involved, each Association has a volunteer Board of Directors. You can find nomination forms for each board at their respective website: illinimoms.com or illinidads.com To volunteer, email the Illini Union Parent and Family Programs Office at iuparentfamilyprograms@ illinois.edu, call (217) 333- 7063, or visit our website.

Welcome from the Dads Association William Stratman – President, Dads Association On behalf of the Dads Association, I’d like to welcome you to a select group, the fathers (and father figures) of a University of Illinois student! If you’re a first-time Illinois parent, you’re probably looking for some resources to help you with your students’ transition to life as an Illini and that’s where the Dads Association can help. As the oldest known parents’ association in the nation, we have a lot of experience helping families get acclimated to the university community and student life at Illinois. If this isn’t your first student at Illinois, or you’re an alumnus, you’re probably already familiar with our group. So who is the Dads Association? You are. Every dad and father figure of an Illinois student is automatically a member of the Association. If you register on our website (illinidads. com), you’ll be on our mailing list and get regular updates on campus activities, hints to help your student,

and what the Dads Association is doing in the campus community. The Dads Association is not only an information resource; we’re also a philanthropic organization. We award in excess of $25,000 a year in grants to student organizations and scholarships, along with funding special projects for the campus community. We are the primary sponsor of Dads Weekend, sponsoring events throughout the weekend, including a pre-game BBQ, discounted football tickets, a Saturday night concert on campus, and a Sunday brunch. Selling tickets for these events is our primary fundraiser each year. The proceeds fund the scholarship and grants programs. If you’re making plans to come to Dads Weekend, please consider purchasing your event tickets through the Dads Association. The Dads Association is always looking for new board members. Our executive board changes yearly, as members of the board are dads of current students. If you’re looking for a way to get involved with campus life and make a positive impact on the student and university community, please consider volunteering for the Dads Association board of directors. You can find more information on our website.
