T-shaped skills are also highly valued in scrum and agile development methodology. Scrum is a popular framework for managing complex software development projects, and it emphasizes collaboration, selforganization, and flexibility. While employers rate internship experience with their organization as the most influential attribute, any internship experience in the industry is also a top deciding factor.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ELEVATE PROGRAM is the culmination of more than a decade of meticulous assessment of the student journey, encompassing experiences, successes, and career outcomes, drawn from decades of successful implementation of experiential learning.

This extensive research led to the creation of a sophisticated data model that delves deeply into the variables contributing to student success. The Elevate program was then created as a bespoke plan designed to nurture and accelerate students’ academic and career growth.

Illinois Tech’s own data shows the role that hands-on experience plays in promoting successful outcomes: students who have completed an internship are more than 25 percent more more likely to find full-time employment and have at least $10,000 higher median starting salary than peers who have not completed an internship (2023, Illinois Tech, based on 2022 undergraduate career placement rate measured six months after graduation).

STUDENTS ARE CHOOSING ILLINOIS TECH BECAUSE OF ELEVATE

Incoming freshmen and their parents are increasingly choosing where they study based on their career prospects.

The overwhelming majority (85 percent) of respondents agreed that a “very important” reason for attending college was to get a better job, according to The Higher Education Research Institute’s 2018 Survey on the American Freshman, published in 2019, which records the attitudes of incoming freshmen attending four-year public and private universities.

Illinois Tech is experiencing skyrocketing enrollment growth, with a 23 percent increase over last year’s enrollment and the highest fall enrollment in more than 30 years. This surge in growth represents the most significant overall undergraduate and graduate enrollment in more than three decades—with a more than 35 percent increase in undergraduate applications and 37 percent growth in graduate applications received for this fall semester—and coincides with Illinois Tech’s jump in national rankings, due in part to the extraordinary career outcomes for its graduates.
