From the President...

As summer comes to an end and we move into the fall of 2010, I sense a positive attitude about the dairy industry and farming—much more so than I did a year ago at this time of the year. Whether I’m at a meeting, a county fair or show, or visiting with a neighbor, conversations seem to be much more positive. Dairy prices seem to be on the rise, and the value of our cattle seems to be increasing. In our area of the state, it will be a pleasure to harvest crops with projected higher yields and lower moisture. I would like to thank the show committee and all those who helped make the 2010 state show such a success. Here, I could also sense a positive attitude about our Holstein cattle, and I received several compliments about the quality of our Illinois cattle. It was a show we

can truly be proud of. Looking ahead, I think we can be optimistic about our state sale on October 23rd. I invite you all to make the trip to Golden Oaks and support our organization by attending the sale. I also hope to see you at our December convention in Champaign. Our association will be part of this PDCA All Breeds convention; this is a very good opportunity to meet with dairy farmers and plan how we can work together to improve our associations and our own personal dairy operations. You can find complete details about the state sale and the convention in this issue of the Herald.

Dale Drendel

From the Director... After one of the hottest summers that I can remember, I am certainly looking forward to the cool harvest season. Our industry has recently experienced many tragic accidents. My deepest sympathy goes out to those families who have lost loved ones. They will really be missed. I especially extend my sympathy to the family of Allen Tucker who recently passed away. Allen encouraged many of us and greatly served the Illinois Holstein Association as well as Holstein USA as a Part-time Regional Field Representative. Our lives have been blessed by so many people. The 2010 National Holstein Convention was well attended with lively discussion. Two major areas of interest was the TPI Formula and Genomics. Many delegates felt that changes should be made in how the TPI formula is weighted. The 2010 Genetic Advancement Committee has met to discuss TPI and will forward a recommendation to the Board for consideration. I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on where improvements are needed with the Holstein cow and how TPI should be weighted. The Holstein USA Show Committee will meet this fall to establish a National Judges List.. They will also plan to hold a Judges Conference for those on the list to better prepare them to work State and National Shows. Also meeting this fall is the Type Committee. This committee reviews the Classification Program to see if any changes should be made to major breakdowns or any other part of the program. Illinois is proud to be represented by Dave Ruppert on the Show Committee and Neal Turley on the Type Committee. I am sure that they would enjoy hearing from you. Page 6

There is a new, less costly genomic test now at Holstein USA. The cost is $35 and should allow for more animals to be tested. It is our hope that breeders will use this to find animals with something different to bring to the breed. I believe our strength is our genetic diversity and that it needs to be maintained. We are entering an exciting time of the year for Holstein enthusiasts. With Expo and other fall shows, the State Sale and All Breeds Convention coming up, it is a busy time of year. Please take time to be careful in all you do. I hope to see you there.

Dutchess Domain

Hello! My name is Katie Probst and I am your new Illinois Holstein Duchess this year! I am the 19-year-old daughter of Toby and Margie Probst of Jasper County, Illinois. I will be a junior at Illinois State University this August and graduated from Newton Community High School. I am a member of Effingham Holstein Club and the Illinois Junior Holstein Association. This past year, I currently wrapped up my last year in 4-H as a completion member. The past few years I had shown my cattle at the 4-H show and Black and White Open show at the local county fair. During these years in 4-H, I have been an active leader twice as President, once as Secretary, and Reporter. Even though I have completed 4-H I plan to continue showing at the fair in later years. The past year I attended and completed my first year at Illinois State University and I am majoring in psychology. I was involved in a number of clubs and organizations including Watterson Area Government, Student Psychology Association, Madison 1 Floor President, and a school psychology research team. I am currently getting back into the swing of things again this fall at Illinois State. During high school I was involved in a number of fun activities. These include basketball, volleyball, student council, musicals, Star-Spangled Banner club, National Honors Society, church choir, and 4-H. I improved my leadership skills by being a captain in basketball and volleyball, being voted junior class President, President of Star-Spangled Banner club, and Vice-President of chorus. My past jobs included babysitting, working at Arby’s restaurant in Effingham, detasseling during the summer for Monsanto, and of course helping milk and working on the farm, Probstland Dairy, where I own two registered Holsteins. Coming in the future, I plan on attending the Illini Golden Opportunity Sale on October 23. I also hope to be able to attend the Senior Holstein Convention the weekend of December 9. Hope to see you all there!

Fall 2010

Superior Young Dairy Producer Award Program The 2010 Superior Young Dairy Producer Award (SYDPA) program was held August 21, at the Illinois State Fair. Twenty 4-H and/or FFA dairy project members from across Illinois took part in the event. The purpose of the contest is to create an educational activity that promotes youth development, career development, and personal growth through increased knowledge of the dairy industry. This three-phase competition, emphasizing the youth’s knowledge of the dairy industry, awarded each of the top five overall participants with a $1,000 scholarship. The 2010 scholarship recipients, in alpha order, are: • Rick Koehn, Peotone, IL (Will County) • Haley Lyons, Rockford, IL (Winnebago County) • Aaron Mitchell, Winnebago, IL (Winnebago County) • Erik Sheppelman, Bloomington, IL (McLean County) • Jessica Telgmann, Strasburg, IL (Shelby County) The $5,000 in scholarships was sponsored by Archer Daniels Midland, Decatur, IL. Individual plaques were awarded to the “top 3” in each phase and the “top 5” overall winners. The Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders Association and Illinois State Fair sponsored the plaques. The first phase was a dairy management test relating to dairy nutrition, health, reproduction, milk marketing, and other dairy related information. Top three contestants for this phase were: • Haley Lyons, Rockford, IL (Winnebago County) • Aaron Mitchell, Winnebago, IL (Winnebago County) • Erik Sheppelman, Bloomington, IL (McLean County) The second phase was a three station skill-a-thon on various aspects of the dairy industry. Contestants had to identify dairy feeds, understand the Dairy Herd Information Association (DHIA) records, and identify dairy equipment. The top three contestants in the skill-a-thon were: • Rick Koehn, Peotone, IL (Will County) • Erik Sheppelman, Bloomington, IL (McLean County) • Jessica Telgmann, Strasburg, IL (Shelby County) The third phase of the Superior Young Dairy Producer Contest was

From the Field... Hopefully this letter finds you surviving the heat! I am sure you are all as ready for the fall as I am. I also would like to congratulate all those who exhibited cattle at local and state shows this summer. It is great to see that despite the economy, people are still bringing out quality animals to support these shows. One thing I would like to discuss with you is the topic of transfers. We all know that the number of animals being sold and transferred has fallen due to the cattle market. However, there is still the responsibility as a seller of a Registered Holstein to complete a transfer application with Holstein Association USA, Inc., for each animal sold. By transferring these animals to the buyer, you are ensuring that your quality genetics that you have worked years for, will continue on with the new owner. I would also like to remind you of a few advantages to transferring your animals: • Value of the animal increases. Still in this down market, I have seen Registered animals bring more then just grade animals, on average $200 to $300 dollars more! • Free three-generation pedigree to new owners. This provides the new owner with performance information. Illinois Holstein Herald

Youth dairy project members participated in the 2010 Superior Young Dairy Producer Award program held during the Illinois State Fair. The “top 5” award winners received a plaque and a $1000.00 scholarship sponsored by Archer Daniels Midland, Decatur, IL. Pictured are (L to R) are: Rick Koehn, Peotone; Aaron Mitchell, Winnebago; Haley Lyons, Rockford; Jessica Telgmann, Strasburg; and Erik Sheppelman, Bloomingtonden. Plaques were sponsored by Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders Association and IL State Fair.

a judging contest. The judging phase consisted of animal selection by placing four classes of dairy cows and two classes of heifers. The top three contestants for this phase were: • Tyler Carter, Greenville, IL (Bond County) • Kaleb Hoerbert, Delavan, IL (Logan County) • Rick Koehn, Peotone, IL (Will County)

This year marked the 15th consecutive year for the Superior Young Dairy Producer Award Program which has provided $75,000 in college scholarships to Illinois dairy youth since its inception. Participants must be 4-H or FFA dairy project members in Illinois. The program is developed and coordinated by Dave Fischer, Retired Extension Dairy Educator.

• Breeding and management information. By knowing the lineage of that animal, new buyers can manage inbreeding and genetic recessives. There are several easy ways you can file your transfers. First, the most convenient would be filing them online. By just logging onto www.holsteinusa.com you can find an online application that can be completed in just a few minutes. Secondly, you can use the paper application form. These can be found online as well, or sent to you in the mail. Finally, you can contact customer service at Holstein, or myself at 316-772-1884 or cunruh@holstein.com and we can help you with any transfer needs you might have. Remember, the sooner you complete these applications the cheaper they will be. So lets all remember our responsibilities as Holstein Association members and satisfy our buyers by providing them with the papers transferred into their names. Let me know if you need anything. See you soon!

activities, I hope we have provided information that has helped the Illinois dairy industry maintain profitability and sustainability. I have genuinely enjoyed interacting with those of you who have been students or sent your children to the University of Illinois. While I have left the University, I will still be involved with the dairy industry in the Midwest. My new position with Pfizer Animal Health will allow me to network more actively with dairy producers in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin. Stay in touch! Dick Wallace I want to thank the Illinois Holstein Association members, IHA board, and the State Show committee for the honor of having the 2010 Illinois Holstein Show dedicated to our U of I Extension Dairy Team. It certainly has been my privilege to be a part of the team and serving you as Extension Dairy Educator, both for the adult and youth program areas. I could not have asked for a more meaningful career than I have had throughout my 39 years with University of Illinois Extension.

All-Illinois 125,000 lbs. cow Luck-E Charles Trixie

I will carry the memories with me of the many dairy producers, families, and youth who I have worked with and who have touched my life. I hope to have many more years of involvement with you and the dairy industry in the future. I also plan to continue working with the Illinois youth dairy activities. A sincere thank you to my co-award winners, Dr. Mike Hutjens and Dr. Dick Wallace DVM, for they are awesome educators and friends. And a “special thanks” to my family --- Bonnie, Chad & Lisa, Todd & Kristin for their love and support and especially for the two wonderful grandbabies that I can now spend a lot of time with. Have a great day to all! Dave Fischer

Illinois Championship Show Dedication Illinois Dairy Extension Team

David Fisher

Dave Fisher, from Trenton, Ill., serves as an extension dairy educator for the University of Illinois and has been recognized nationally for his excellence in dairy-related youth activities during his 39-year career. Dave has a long history with Holsteins, owning his first registered animal in March 1962. He’s been a national senior member for 40 years. Dave was raised on a dairy farm near Trenton, and participated in 4-H. Dave graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with a degree in Animal Science. While there, he was member of the SIU-C dairy judging team. He received his MS from Southern Illinois UniversityEdwardsville in 1981. Dave began his career with extension service in July 1971 as a county agriculture extension advisor with specialized dairy advisor responsibilities. In March 1992, he was appointed extension dairy educator. Dave coordinates Illinois 4-H dairy judging activities, resulting in many “All-American” 4-H judges from his teams. Dave initiated the Illinois 4-H Dairy Quiz program, and he has coached the state team to four national titles. He developed the highly successful Illinois Superior Young Producer Award program, helped develop the Illinois Livestock E-Quiz interactive web site, has served as superintendent of the Illinois State Fair Junior Dairy Show for 31 years, and is a sought-after dairy cattle judge. Dave helped develop the Illinois 4-H/FFA Quality Assurance and Ethics Certification program for livestock exhibitors. Dave is a member of the Clinton County Holstein Club and the current Promotions Chair for the Illinois Holstein Association. He received the Clinton County Distinguished Service award from both the juniors and seniors and was the 1998 Service Award winner for the Illinois Holstein Association. Dave and his wife, Bonnie, have married sons and enjoy being grandparents to their young grandchildren. Dr. Michael F. Hutjens Dr. Mike Hutjens grew up on a Green Bay, Wis., farm and was dedicated to a life in FFA and 4-H. He graduated in 1967 at the top of his class from the University of Wisconsin Page 16

and then went on to complete a PhD in dairy science and nutritional science with a minor in biochemistry also from the University of Wisconsin in 1971. Leaving the farm fields of Wisconsin behind, he moved west, serving as the extension dairy specialist at the University of Minnesota for eight years where he coached the national champion dairy cattle judging team at the 1978 World Dairy Expo. For the past 29 years, Hutjens has been a member of the University of Illinois Dairy and Animal Sciences Departments where he is a sought after professor, speaker and writer. Dr. Hutjens initiated several new programs that are now the backbone of the current Illinois Dairy Extension program. Particularly notable is his leadership role for the annual “Dairy Days” program, held each winter throughout the state. Dairymen around the world are familiar with Dr. Hutjens’ articles in the top agricultural publications, including Hoard’s Dairyman, Dairy Today, Dairy Japan and others. Dr. Hutjens has also been the speaker at numerous barn and annual meetings for the Illinois Holstein Association. Along with his wife Carol, he chaired the Youth Committee in the early 80’s and was also key in developing the annual Spring Thing event for Juniors. Mike is an ever-present figure at the Illinois Championship Show, helping in the ring and particularly with picturing class and champion winners. His sense of humor and good nature always make for an enjoyable time! Mike was honored as the Illinois Holstein Association Service Award winner in 1996. Mike and Carol live in Savoy and five adult children.

Desiring more work with dairy cattle, he sold his practice in 1987 and joined a three person dairy practice in Door County, Wisconsin. In September 1993, Dr. Wallace returned to his alma mater to obtain a Master’s degree in Veterinary Preventive Medicine. In 1995, Dr. Wallace joined the Continuing Education, Public Service/Extension unit at the University of Illinois as the Dairy Extension Veterinarian. In a cooperative role with the Department of Animal Sciences, Dr. Wallace served as the faculty coordinator and dairy farm manager for the Dairy Cattle Research Unit at the University of Illinois for six years. Dr. Wallace has been the faculty advisor for the veterinary student chapter of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, the Production Medicine Club and the Animal Wellbeing Club at the College of Veterinary Medicine. He has also served as the faculty advisor for the Illini Dairy Club in the College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. Dr. Wallace is completing his terms on the Executive Board of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners as the Past President. Dick, and his wife Carrie, married in 1981 and they have three children.

Richard L. Wallace, DVM, MS Dick Wallace grew up in central Ohio and attended The Ohio State University from 1976 through 1985, receiving dual Bachelor’s degrees in Wildlife Zoology from the College of Arts and Science (1980) and Dairy Science from the College of Agriculture (1981), then a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (1985). After graduation, Dr. Wallace started his own mixedanimal veterinary practice in Centerburg, Ohio.

Summer is gone Fall will start to Madison we go to take part:

is a word used in many ways in our industry. It means different things to different producers. To some, it’s the measure of how many cows make it to their 3rd lactation. To others, it’s 100,000 lbs. of milk lifetime. 200,000 lbs. lifetime is still a longevity mark that we all respect. We would like to mention a few cows here that have exceeded that level of longevity.

MARATHON COUNTY HOLSTEIN BREEDERS

Introducing... Registered cattle at the Tom Bunkelman farm goes way back to 1968 when Tom was a freshman in high school. The animal he received was through the DoBoy Calf Project. He got the calf from Carl Norrbom and her name was Norrbom Lucifer Eva. From Eva, Tom started his Registered herd of Holstein cattle. He purchased Registered animals over the years looking for deep pedigrees with good feet and legs and good mammary systems. In April of 1976 Tom purchased a 120 acre dairy farm in the town of Frankfort in Marathon County. He started out with 39 cows and 20 head of young stock, and also had some grade animals with many being Registered. In 1979 Tom built a 90 foot addition on the barn, an 18x70 silo and a 120x60 foot slab in the cow yard. But the most important event was getting married to his wife Florine on September 29, 1979. Over the next several years, Florine and Tom had three children, Brooke (now 30), Brent (now 26) and Brodie (now 18). Brooke has been working on the home farm and for other dairy farms since she was 15 years old. She is currently employed at Murph-Ko Farms in Eden, WI, where she is a herdsperson of the 1200 cow Registered herd. She mainly takes care of special needs cows and calves. Brent is part owner in the farm and is also employed with S.D. Ellenbecker Construction Company. Brent, along with his brother Brodie, also runs a custom planting, tillage and harvesting operation. Brodie, who just graduated in May 2010, is going to attend NIC (technical college) this fall for welding and graphic design and is also considering a Dairy Short Course. In 1983 Tom-Kins Acres had a milking herd dispersal. The sale averaged $3,000 on 60 lots with the highest selling cow being Sam-Dale Alma-Naomi Chief, who sold for $8,500. After the sale a new milkhouse was built and Tom-Kins Farm started over with 60 bred heifers from the dispersed herd. With work not being so intense, Tom drove milk truck for 5 years and Florine worked for a dentist as a dental assistant. Over the years, Tom-Kins Farm has raised many show winning cattle. One of the many highlights of our showing came in 2001 when Delice Fawn Charles was purchased as a fall calf. Brent showed her at all the local fairs, winning Junior Champion and Overall Best Showman. Brooke also showed her in the open class at many fairs, including: 2nd at Iowa State Fair, 2nd at Illinois State Fair, 2nd at NAILE, Louisville, KY, 3rd at Minnesota State Fair and 11th at the International Holstein Show in Madison. In 2003 Charmin-B J.S. Ashanti, a Jersey winter calf won her class at World Dairy Expo and was also Best Bred and Owned and Honorable Mention Junior Champion. The following year, Ashanti placed 5th at the International Jersey Show. Brooke would show animals at various fairs like the Northern Wisconsin State Fair, Athens Fair and Central Wisconsin State Fair, winning many Junior Champion and Senior Champion awards. She would always persuade Brent to go along to help her even though he didn’t want to go. Tom-Kins Farm also has had a few bulls go to A.I. studs, including Tom-Kins Arlinda Samson and Tom-Kins Absolute were at 21st Centurty Genetics in Shawano, WI. Our first homebred Excellent animal was Tom-Kins Spy Dur B-Barbie, a Braedale Spy daughter out of a VG-87 Durham. Since then, Tom-Kins Farm has bred 11 Excellent cows. Most of the homebred Excellent animals are out of our Canadian cow, Delice Fawn Charles EX-91. Charlie (Fawn’s nickname) has had many offspring in our herd and has also sold embryos to other dairy farms. Daughters of Charlie include an 87 point Integrity daughter, Charmin-B Integ Carnie with an EX-92 mammary; Charmin-B Durham Chanel EX-91 EX-92MS; Tom-Kins Bucky Charlay VG-87; Charmin-B Gibson Chyna-Doll GP-84. There are also daughters by Shottle, Goldwyn, Talent, Durham and Jasper. Charmin-B J.S. Ashanti In 2006 Tom-Kins Farm became Tom-Kins Farm LLC to incorporate Brent and Brodie into the farm with Brooke being a silent partner. The farm has also done a few improvements, renovating a 30x72 machine shed into a calf barn with 18 poly-pens and one large pen for transitioning the calves. We also built a 60x72 heifer and dry cow barn with two bays, one for dry cows and the other for bred heifers. The farm raises all young stock for their cow replacements as well as some of the bulls that come from the top cows and are sold for herd bulls. Tom-Kins Farm’s breeding philosophy is to use sires that are at least +2 or better on type, udders and feet and legs. They are not worried about using bulls high in milk and depend on good forages for increasing production. Sires being used in the herd at this time are Sanchez, Durham, Shottle, Goldwyn, Jasper and some genomic sires. The farm grows 65 acres of alfalfa and 65 acres of corn which includes 40 acres of rented land. The grain is purchased from local feed mills and, if needed, hay and bedding are purchased. Tom-Kins Farm LLC had a pretty good year in the showring. At the District 4 Show we had Junior Champion of the Open Show with Santschi Shaquille Hiza, a fall calf, and Senior Champion with Dalin Durham Taffy-ET, a 4 year old, who was also Best Udder of the Show. Brodie also won Top Showman honors at the Wisconsin Valley Fair along with Junior Champion and Senior Champion of the Holstein Show. Delice Fawn Charles EX-91 Brodie did well at the Athens Fair, winning Overall Showman, Junior and Supreme Champion of the heifer show and the Jane Mattox (Bunkelman) award. The current rolling herd average is 21,810 lbs. of milk with a 4.0% and 880 lbs. of fat and 3.3% and 721 lbs. of protein. The herd consists of 7 Excellent cows, 34 Very Goods, 12 Good Plus for a BAA of 106.5%. Thank you to the Marathon County Holstein Breeders for sponsoring this page.

WISCONSIN MADISON

Dairy Science STUDENT PROFILE Name: Chelsea Holschbach Hometown: Baraboo, WI High School: Baraboo High School Farm: Heatherstone Enterprises Inc. Major: Dairy Science

Class Size: 250

Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? It was a natural choice considering my strong interest in dairy science and veterinary medicine. The Dairy Science program and Vet School are both world-renowned. In addition, the fact that my parents and sister are UW-Madison graduates might have helped cinch that decision! What has been your most memorable college experience? Being a member of the UW-Madison Dairy Judging Team and competing in the 2009 NAILE contest in Louisville, KY. I was honored to be the High Individual in Oral Reasons and the Jersey breed. What has been your favorite course? My favorite course was Dairy Science 375 – Reproduction Management with Dr. Milo Wiltbank. We learned practical techniques such as: artificial insemination, ultrasounding, and embryo transfer. This was by far the most hands-on class, and where I felt the specific knowledge enhanced my preparation for Veterinary School. What are your future career goals? My ultimate career goal is to become a Large Animal Veterinarian, perhaps specializing in surgery or internal medicine. I actually started my first year of Veterinary Medical School at UW-Madison in August.

Holstein USA National Convention Notes

Constitution, Bylaws and Resolutions Committee brought forth the following resolutions which were approved by the membership: Resolution #1 • Whereas many members of the Wisconsin Holstein Association believe in breeding cattle with a balance of type and production. • And whereas the January 2010 TPI formula only gives a 25% weighting to type conformation and an extremely high weighting to health traits. • Be it resolved that Holstein Association USA re-evaluate the TPI formula and raise the type contribution to a level that more accurately reflects what breeders desire for a balance of type and production. Resolution #2 • Whereas the members of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and all Registered Holstein breeders across the country rely on genetics for a significant portion of their profit. And whereas, all breeders fund the genetic • system with DHIA testing fees, breed association activity, and semen purchases. • Be it resolved, that the Wisconsin Holstein board of directors on behalf of their membership direct the Holstein USA Board of Directors to advise USDA's Animal Improvement Programs Laboratory (AIPL) that breeders need a genetic system that creates long-term confidence in genetic predictions. That genetic system must allow breeders to compare animals on the same scale. Further, breeders must have ample opportunity to contribute feedback to proposed AIPL changes and be advised at least three to six months before proposed changes are implemented. Still further, new genetic calculations should not be published when using female DNA (which is the intellectual property of each respective breeder) unless approved by the Holstein Association and its board of directors. And lastly, all industry partners should work on developing a long-term vision for genomics. Resolution #4 Whereas longtime Holstein Association • Chief Executive Officer and Executive Secretary Robert Rumler passed away this year, be it resolved that the Association formally recognizes the contributions he made to the Holstein Association and share with you his philosophy on life: MASTERFUL LIVING by James Michener: • "The Master in the Art of Living draws no distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing and leaves it to others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he is always doing both." Resolution #5 Be it resolved that the delegates of the 125th • Annual Meeting of Holstein Association USA, Inc. extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to our hosts, the Minnesota Holstein Association. The Holstein Association acknowledges • that considerable work and planning go into

arranging social activities that contribute to an enjoyable National Holstein Convention. The Association appreciates the attention to detail that the Minnesota Holstein Association members have given each of these events. The Association sincerely thanks the organizers and their committees for their work in creating an unforgettable week in Minnesota! • Therefore, the Holstein Association USA, Inc. commends and congratulates the Minnesota Holstein Association for their warm welcome and hospitality during our celebration of this special anniversary, the 125th Annual Meeting. Board Elections • Re-elected to his second three-year term on the Holstein Association USA board of directors was Leroy Eggink, representing Region 6. • Elected to their first three-year term on the board are Peter B. Waterman, Maine, for Region 1; Gayle M. Carson, Tennessee, in Region 4; and Corey Geiger, Wisconsin, for the At-Large position. • Retiring from the board of directors this year are Gordon M. Cook, Jr., At-Large Director; John C. Kalmey, Ky., from Region 4; and William H. Peck, N.Y., of Region 1. Junior Results • California defeated Minnesota in the Junior Dairy Bowl finals. • In the Senior Dairy Bowl competition, Pennsylvania bested the team from Washington to claim the title. • Dairy Bowl sportsmanship awards went to the Georgia Junior team and the Illinois Senior team. The Junior Division Speech contest had • 21 contestants. Winners were: 1st: Kate Carlson, IL The Intermediate Division Speech contest • had 19 contestants. Winners were: 1st: Sarah Sheehan, IL; 3rd: Morgan Bollech, IL In the Senior Division Speech contest, which • had 13 contestants, the winners were: • * 1st: Sarah Caldwell, PA • The state banner competition, winners were: 1st: Illinois • Look for more Convention coverage in upcoming press releases and the Holstein Pulse. National Convention On Thursday, June 24, fourteen Illinois Junior Holstein members and five adults departed for Bloomington, Minn., for the 2010 National Holstein Convention. We had spent 10 weeks studying every Sunday afternoon with our coaches, so we were excited for the big event and ready to compete with other teams. On our way to the convention, we went on three farm tours. First we went to Scientific Holsteins, which is located in Chippewa Falls, Wis. There we saw members of the famous Debutante Rae family. Next we toured Mayerlane Holsteins in Bloomer, Wis. We saw some great cows here including members of the Durham Mae and Star Lily family. Don Mayer shared his knowledge about the embryo business with us as well. Our third stop was at Nova Holsteins in New Richmond, Wis. Here we enjoyed seeing beautiful cows in a pack barn and learned of the extensive embryo work this farm is doing. The tours were great. We saw some exciting cow families and met some terrific cow people. We packed back into our vehicles and headed to Bloomington for the convention. After checking in we went out to dinner and celebrated coach Glenn Meier’s birthday. The second day of convention was filled with competition in the jeopardy and speech contests. Our senior division contestants for the jeopardy contest were Josh Huelsman and Matt Drendel. Our intermediate division contestant was Sarah Sheehan, and our junior division contestants were Kate Carlson and Emily Irwin. The highlight of our jeopardy participation came when Emily took first place in the junior competition. The speech contestant competing in the junior division was Kate Carlson, with her speech titled “BVD”. We also had two intermediate contestants. Sarah Sheehan’s speech was “Public Relations” and Morgan Bollech’s was “Production Management.” We were really proud of their speeches. Later in the week we were thrilled to find out that Kate placed first in the junior division, Morgan

placed third in the intermediate division and Sarah placed first in the intermediate division. Another highlight for the day was the announcing of the YDJM finalists. We were excited to have Justin Crull from Poplar Grove name a winner. He and his mom, Sue Crull, and Jr. Advisor, Melissa Irwin, enjoyed the DJM luncheon. Justin completed an application and turned in a YDJM book. It took him many hours to work on it, and we were very proud that he was selected as a national winner. The next day was Host Day. We went to Glenmark Genetics, the Bonnie Mohr studio, Flower-Brook Holsteins, Raylore Farm, and Floralawn Holsteins. All the farms were beautiful with barns of impressive cattle. For many of our group the Bonnie Mohr studio was a huge hit. We even got to tour her house and see where she paints. Later that evening we enjoyed a trip to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. There we enjoyed a delicious meal; we walked around the grounds and viewws the various plants. The scenery was breathtaking. The following day was dairy bowl day. The seniors won two matches and lost two matches. The members of the senior team were Angie Boesche, Aaron Mitchell, Elizabeth Myelle, and Colleen Ziller. We were thrilled when the team received the Sportsmanship Award. (That must have been a reward for sharing the Mountain Dew with other teams.) The junior team also had a good day, placing third. The members of the junior team were Ryan Sheehan, Morgan Bollech, Jordan Ollerich, and Daniel Obert. Following the dairy bowl contest, we went to the National Convention Sale. There was a big crowd of people and the cattle sold really well. The next day started early with the finals of the dairy bowl contest. It was a good competition in both the Jr. and Sr. contests. We also elected new JAC (Junior Advisory Committee) members. Production Awards were handed out and IJHA member Emily Irwin received the Progressive Breeder Award for her cow R-Vision Talent Prescious. Next was the awards banquet. Justin Crull received

a pin and plaque for being a YDJM Finalist. Emily Irwin received her jeopardy award. Next, Kate Carlson received her award for first place junior speech. Then Sarah Sheehan and Morgan Bollech got their awards for being first and third respectively in the Intermediate Speech Contest. The Junior Dairy Bowl teams received their third place ribbons and the Senior team received ribbons for the Sportsmanship Award. The Scrapbook winners were announced and IJHA members received fifth place in the digital scrapbook contest. This was the first time we had competed in this contest. Our reporter Dakota Grayling did a great job putting it together and it showcased activities of our association over the past year. The banner awards were also presented and Illinois received first place on its banner. The folding display awards were also given out and Brianna Sheehan’s folding display was second place in the junior division. Following the banquet we took some group pictures and then headed to the Mall of America for a relaxing evening. It was really a neat place to visit with lots of great places to eat and shop. We would like to thank Midwest Dairyman’s Company from Rockford, Ill., for sponsoring our team shirts. We would also like to thank Becky and Glenn Meier for all the time they spent coaching us to get ready for the contests and Brian Olbrich and Melissa Irwin for being our chaperons. Finally, we want to thank those of you who donated your time or money to the IJHA so that we could go to convention. With all our success at this convention we are really excited for the future. For now we are still celebrating our accomplishments. Congrats to all of the juniors on their successful showing in Minnesota! Emily Irwin

Junior Moos Hi, this is the Junior Holstein Club from Clinton County. We have all had fun at all the fairs we’ve attended and know there’s more to come. I hope you all have had fun at your fairs, too. On July 18, 2010, we had a dairy judging contest, pizza party, and a short business meeting. Kevin Hartmann was the judge and showed us what to look for in a dairy cow. Kristi Droste, Josh Huelsmann, Chris Kollmann and Miranda Kollmann were the winners. We discussed having another fall picnic like last year. The next day, Monday, July 19, we had our Clinton County Jr. Holstein

Show. Kevin Wendling was our judge; there were 45 head shown for that show. Clinton County Holstein Dutchess Miranda Kollmann participated in the Illinois Holstein Dutchess Contest in Bloomington on Wednesday, July 21, 2010. Congratulations for a job well done, Miranda! Miranda Kollmann and Lane Heinzmann exhibited at the Illinois Junior Championship Show in Bloomington, on Thursday, July 22, 2010. Koll-Kreek Lynch Lana, owned by Miranda Kollmann, was Senior Champion Female. Miranda, also, placed third in Senior Girls Showmanship. Good job, Miranda! Jonathan Weekley
