FROM THE PRESIDENT__ _ FROM THE DIRECTOR I hope everyone is having a successful harvest both from a safety standpoint as well as it being bountiful. With the lack of rainfall lately as well as the excessive heat the crops are drying extremely fast, but so far yields are good and working conditions have been too. The Illinois Holstein picnic was held on an extremely beautiful day in southern Illinois. There were over 200 people in attendance from all over Illinois as well as guests from Indiana. The Probst family deserves a huge “Thank You”. Their planning and preparation was superb. Illinois Holstein Association is also proud to introduce our new secretary and treasurer. Tina Yagow is our new secretary; she is from Rochelle, Ill. Andrew Smith is our new treasurer; he is from Davis, Ill. I look The Wendling family: Kevin and Jennifer, forward to working with each back, Morgan, left, Macy, right, of them in the future. They both and Gaige, center. have impressive credentials and I’m sure they will bring a lot to our organization. The Illinois Golden Opportunity Sale selection process has been completed. There is quite an impressive group of consignments this year. The hard work that has been put into the sale has put it in position to be one of the best in recent years. Watch for more information on the Illinois Holstein website and in this issue of the herald. As harvest comes to a close, we look to the completion of another show season as our best look to compete at World Dairy Expo and other fall national shows. Good luck to everyone, whether an exhibitor or spectator. Don’t forget, the Illinois convention is December 1-2, 2011, in Quincy. The Mississippi Valley club has been hard at work planning this event for some time. Another thing to remember this year is our Committee Meetings and the 2015 National Convention planning meeting will be held in January in Bloomington. Make plans to attend both events.

Kevin Wendling

DUTCHESS DOMAIN__ Happy Fall Illinois Holstein Members, Though I never really saw myself as the crown and sash wearing type, serving as the Illinois Holstein Duchess is an honor and a great opportunity. I have already enjoyed my role as Dutchess for the summer activities and I look forward to the upcoming events. A little more about who I am; I am a senior at the University of Illinois majoring in agricultural communications specialization in advertising with a minor in animal sciences. At school I am very active in the Illini Dairy Club and the dairy judging team along with other clubs and groups on campus. I have grown up on a registered Holstein dairy and grain farm in Southern Illinois and I have loved every minute of being involved with the dairy industry. After graduation in May, I hope to pursue a career with and remain involved in the dairy industry. So, if any of you Herald readers know of a great open position, let me know. I figured a little personal advertising would be acceptable. Page 6

Hello from the National Holstein Association. Activities for the association have been very good for the first eight months of the year. Registrations, transfers and classifications have been near or ahead of year ago levels. Financially the organization is ahead of last year due to reducing costs. The August genetic evaluations brought a new issue to be considered. Three genetic recessives that are called “Haplotypes Impacting Fertility” have been identified for the Holstein breed. Haplotypes are a new term to the industry. More information is available on the Holstein USA website that explains what haplotypes are and how to best manage them in your breeding program. The board decided to publish known carriers but acknowledge that the best way to deal with them is to manage your breeding program by selective mating but not eliminate the carriers because of the traits they offer. The National Convention in June was well attended and enjoyed by everyone. With our commitment to host the 2015 Convention, I would encourage all of you to make plans now to attend next year’s convention in Springfield, Mo. It would be a good experience to see all of the attractions and activities and make new friends. After 2012, the conventions will be held in Indianapolis and Dubuque so I hope you can attend at least one of them since they will be so near. It is good to see so much enthusiasm in Registered Holsteins. Good cows really are more valuable. I hope to see you at one of the fall shows or the Illini Golden Opportunity Sale. Also, make plans to attend the State Convention in Quincy. Be safe,

Boyd Schaufelberger

Since being chosen as the 20112012 Holstein Dutchess, I have had the opportunity to hand out ribbons at the state fair junior show and also attend the Illinois State Holstein Picnic. The state fair is always a fun week and this year a little more excitement was added as I became an aunt that week too. As for the state picnic, I would like to commend the Probst family on doing an excellent job as well as the many breeders that made the trip to attend. Additionally, I would like to say thank you to Morgan Bollech for doing a great job handling the ribbons and trophies at State Show, since I was showing. As fall is in full swing, I hope that everyone has a safe harvest and success at the fall shows. I look forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new people. Also, as there are many changes happening in the registered Holstein business, make the most of your membership and share your thoughts with your regional (Mike Jones) and at large director (Boyd Schaufelberger), one of whom I can contact fairly easily. Enjoy the cooler weather and I hope to see you all around!

The 2011 Illinois Championship Holstein Show is being dedicated to Lee Oltmanns of Nokomis, Ill. This year, the award is being presented in memory of Wilmer Smith of Clearfield Holsteins, Davis, Ill. Wilmer was a long-time Holstein member and exhibitor at the state show. Lee became involved in the dairy industry early in life when he began breeding cows for SIDA in 1962. In 1968, he took over dairying at his father’s farm. Lee has been involved at the Illinois Championship Holstein Show for nearly 30 years, helping in various ways ringside. From getting cattle checked-in to providing noise for that perfect picture, Lee has always been willing to lend a hand, or shovel, to get the job done. Lee also has been an independent A.I. distributor for the past 30 years, traveling throughout southern Illinois and making his rounds at shows and sales in Illinois. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Illinois Holstein Association and was on the Tour Committee for 25 years. He has also served on the PDCA Committee and State Sale Committee. Lee is married to Stella, and together they have two grown children, Steven and Sandy, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Lee and Stella have traveled with the University of Illinois dairy spring break group to multiple countries and states. Lee stays active in community events, serving on several local boards and is very involved with the United Church of Christ.

Junior Internship Round Table

F

inding the right career path can be a challenge. For teenagers today, there are many choices to make about attending a four-year university, community college, or entering the workforce. With fewer and fewer job opportunities in the agriculture industry, it is important for today’s youth to be fully prepared. Internships have become an excellent way for a person to experience what life after college or high school can be like. There are variety of internship opportunities available within many different sectors of the agriculture and dairy industries. The following Round Table discussion covers two college students’ internship experience. At the end of the article is also a brief listing of just some of the companies that offer internships. There is also a listing of websites where you can search for internship and career opportunities as well as provide resources for building your resume.

1. What internship position did you hold and what stimulated your interest? Michelle: I was the Marketing intern for Prairie Farms Dairy. I have always been interested in Prairie Farms. What interested me the most about this role was the opportunity to get to go out and hold events at different locations. I worked at Busch Stadium, the St. Louis Zoo, the Magic House, and Race for the Cure. Amy: This past summer I served as an account services intern, on the Monsanto team for Asgrow and DEKALB, for Osborn & Barr Communications, an agriculture based agency in St. Louis. I wanted to experience what agency life was like while still being able to work with agriculture. 2. How did you find out about this internship? Michelle: I had received information about the internship the spring of my sophomore year through the Illini Dairy Club. An employee had sent information to our advisor and he forwarded it on to the rest of us. I interned for them that summer and got a chance to see how the whole company worked and all the different parts that comes into play when processing dairy products and the selling it. They then asked me back for a second summer where I could be more focused on an area that was the most beneficial to me and what I wanted to do for my career. Amy: I actually found out about this internship through friends in the dairy industry. The CEO of the company grew up on a dairy farm and his parents are family friends. The opportunity to apply for the internship was presented to students at universities across the nation. Illinois Holstein Herald

3. What did your daily duties include? Michelle: Some of my duties included attending sales meetings, putting together information on our promotional projects, organizing and setting up for events, and being of help to the marketing manager. Amy: Working in an agency there are really not many days alike. I was able to sit in on meetings, work with the creative and copywriting departments within the agency, complete research projects for future campaign planning knowledge, aid other account teams with projects they were working on, as well as complete a group internship campaign project. This was a very diverse internship and I was able to deal with many aspects of the agency. 4. What prepared you for the internship? Michelle: What prepared me the most from this internship are skills I have learned from growing up on the farm. Some skills I took from the farm to the workplace included working my hardest, integrity, and my overall knowledge of the dairy industry. This internship was interesting for me because I had known the farmers side but never really got a chance to learn about the business that goes into it. As I learned about the business side and marketing, I used it to my advantage to talk to consumers about my knowledge in the dairy industry. Amy: Growing up on a farm and actually working with crop production was a great asset in preparing me for the internship. I have worked the ground, planted the corn, and shelled the corn but seeing the communications side was quite interesting. That background combined with my agricultural communications coursework at the University of Illinois made it a fairly easy transition into the tasks I was given. I have also gained previous experience in communications through serving as the 4-H House public relations chair which required me to write and layout the annual house publication, by serving as they Illini Dairy Club Pipeline co-editor which gave me the opportunity to write stories and solicit advertisers, and also through my past digital media internship at the Illinois Corn Marketing Board. 5. What did you enjoy most about your internship? Michelle: What I enjoyed most about my internship was the chance to go out and talk to consumers. I was a good chance to

Michelle Fluty is from Bloomington, Ill. Her family runs DSKM Farm - Brown Swiss Dairy Cattle. As a Senior at the University of Illinois, she is studying Agricultural Communications with an Advertising emphasis. In 2007, Michelle was named the Overall Dairy Showmanship winner. More recently, her family exhibited the 2011 Land of Lincoln Supreme female at the Illinois State Fair. Kings Mill Request Jo Dee hails from a deep Brown Swiss line that her family has worked with for years. Michelle’s main goal is to stay involved in the dairy industry. With so may misconceptions about the dairy industry today, she plans on working with consumers to ensure they know the value of our industry.

Amy Schaufelberger is from Greenville, Ill., where she and her family operate Schaufine Holsteins. She is a Senior at the University of Illinois majoring in Agricultural Communication specializing in advertising with a minor in Animal Sciences. Amy received the Superior Young Dairy Producer Award in 2005 and won the Overall Dairy Showmanship Award at the Illinois State Fair that same year. Amy enjoys dairy judging as well, and was the 7th High Individual Overall at the World Dairy Expo 4-H Dairy Judging Contest. Amy hope to remain involved and pursue a career in the dairy industry. Her passion lies in working with cows and the dairy industry and she enjoys the communications and marketing side, but her careers plans are not certain.

interact with the public and hear what they had to say and be there if they had questions for you. Amy: I enjoyed getting to work with a variety of departments and individuals within the agency. It gave me a feel for how it all Page 15

fits together, while being able to see what those positions really do. This helped me to understand better what I would like to pursue after graduation. Working with and getting to know the 12 interns in the St. Louis office which came from across the country was also something enjoyable and intriguing. 6. What have you gained from your internship? Michelle: From this internship I learned more about the sales side of milk and dairy products. I got to learn more about how it all breaks down in prices and how to sell the products we all love. Also, I feel as if I have strengthened some skills I already had including time management, organization, and people skills. Since I had to relocate for this internship to St. Louis, it was interesting learning a whole new city and getting used to living in an urban area. I also felt more of a sense of responsibility living in a city on my own. It was a little taste of the real world and what I get to expect when I graduate in May. Amy: think the most important aspect that I gained from this internship was know what I do and what I do not want to do for a career. With a diverse experience, I was able to test my skills and decide what I really enjoy doing and other areas I was not as interested in. I also learned that as much as I enjoyed working with crops, I like cows better.

7. Do you have any advice for those who may be considering an internship? Michelle: I defiantly encourage doing an internship. You gain so many experiences and can network yourself into possibly getting a full time position. I believe that these are necessary if you want to be very competitive in finding a job. Amy: My advice is to “Just Do It.” I understand that’s Nike’s phrase, but it really does fit. Interning is a great experience. It is extremely beneficial to sort through the many career options that are out there. Especially as a communications major there are many paths that can be taken, but finding out the areas I am really interested in, is crucial. I know it seems tough to give up a summer and hold a “real world” job, but it is worth doing for three months and finding out what is right for you. There are many options out there and there is a fit for everyone. I was lucky enough to have a great opportunity an hour from home. I was able to live at home, work outside when I got home and on the weekends, and I was even able to take some days off to show and help with classification. Driving the hour to work in traffic wasn’t always fun, but there again, a lesson learned. I really do encourage pursuing an internship and probably the more the better, because you can never have to many experiences and you might just find out what you want to do with the rest of your life…or at least were to start.

The University of

WISCONSIN MADISON Dairy Science Student Profile Name: Chelsea Brander Hometown: Spring Green, WI High School: River Valley High School Class Size: 135 Farm: Branders Dairy Farm - 280 milking Registered Holsteins Major: Dairy Science & Life Sciences Communication Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? When I was choosing colleges I was looking for a well-respected university that would offer me a unique student experience and thoroughly prepare me for a future in an agriculture career. UW-Madison fit all of these criteria. Oh, and I can’t forget – it’s great to be a Badger! What has been your most memorable college experience? One of my most memorable college experiences was working for two years as a World Dairy Expo showring chair with Badger Dairy Club. BDC members do a large part of the behind the scenes work in the ring, building the show and sale arenas, maintaining them throughout the week, and taking them down. What has been your favorite course? My favorite dairy science course so far was Dairy Herd Management, a class that brings in experts from the industry to teach about a variety of topics related to dairy science such as milk quality, calf health, nutrition, financial management, housing, and other important subjects. This class gave me a variety of specific knowledge in a hands-on way through field trips and group projects. What are your future career goals? When I graduate in the spring I want to transition into a career in the dairy industry that will allow me to serve farmers on a day to day basis. Growing up on a farm, it’s easy to see that farmers are the backbone of the agriculture industry, and I would like to be part of the support team that helps them succeed. I am interested in areas such as nutrition, financial management, and sales.

MARATHON COUNTY HOLSTEIN BREEDERS

Introducing...

Marcis-View Farms

1976

2009 Marcis-View Farms traces its origin to a farm at the western base of Rib Mountain in the city of Marathon, Wis. Charles and Donna Marcis purchased the farm in 1970, and one year later began milking with the purchase of ten grade springing heifers from a local cattle jockey. Clearing land and picking many, many rocks became their job, with the help of children Steve, Merri, Sherri, and grandparents Carl and Hilda Marcis. The number of animals soon outgrew the low amount of tillable acreage, and a bigger farm was sought out. In 1975 the couple moved to Stratford, Wis., with their family and this location is still the main farm. In 1978, the addition of Registered cattle began with the selection of some animals from the Beckman brother’s herd in Merrill. With the help of purchases of animals from dispersals and sales, natural growth, and the opening of the Holstein USA herdbook, the herd has been completely Registered for almost twenty years. After graduating from UW-River Falls in 1988, and working at the UW-Marshfield Agricultural Research Station for four and a half years, Steve married Sarah in 1992 and one year later purchased the farm from Charles and Donna. In 1998, research of parlors took place with the intention of milking in a minimal-sized parlor to ease the physical stress of milking, yet still continuing to be a family farm. But with the untimely death of Steve’s mother Donna in February of 1999, priorities were realigned and the “expansion” did not take place. Although a second farm five miles away was purchased in 2003, where Charles and wife Eleanore reside currently, the number of milk cows, sixty, has not fluctuated since the mid-1980’s. Today, Steve and Sarah, plus their five children - Andrew, 17, Alayne, 14, Audree, 13, Annica, 10, and Angela, 6 - along with help from Charles and Sarah’s parents, Lloyd and Mary Schultz, operate the farms consisting of sixty cows and 300 tillable acres. Crops grown include alfalfa, corn, and soybeans. In most years, some of the crops provided a nice buffer as cash crops. After getting a couple of bulls into stud, the breeding philosophy remains the same at Marcis-View: high production out of cows that are easy to milk, and a simple concentration on longevity. The Marcis family would like to thank the Marathon County Holstein Breeders for partnering with us to make this ad possible.

With all the genomic talk and index breeding, we still breed for type and get the numbers WE like. Our June 2011 classification gave us our very first BAA, which now stands at 102.7%. Our low cull rate of 22% has enabled us to fill our new freestall barn in less than a year. Now that’s our definition of productive life! We are excited about the next phase in our expansion plan, which includes a new milking facility featuring a Double 8 Bou-Matic herringbone parlor. We hope to be settled in by November and look forward to hanging up our milking stools! The future looks very bright at Goers Family Dairy!

Junior Journeys Illinois Junior Holstein members have been very busy this summer with National Convention, District Shows, State Show, County Fairs, and State Fair. Look for State Show and State Fair results in this issue of the Herald. National Convention National Convention was the week of June 20-26 in Richmond, Virginia. On the way out, the Juniors stopped in Washington D.C. They took a mobile bus tour that went around the city. During the tour they saw all the major monuments. In addition, they got off the tour bus and went up to the Lincoln Memorial and Korean War memorial. They then proceeded on to Virginia. During the convention Illinois Juniors did very well. The junior and senior quiz bowl teams represented Illinois well although neither team placed. In the dairy jeopardy contest Morgan Bollech placed fourth in Intermediate Jeopardy and Aaron Mitchell placed third in the Senior Jeopardy contest. Aaron also had a very busy week at convention as he was named a DJM semifinalist and was responsible for helping with various activities during the convention. In addition, he ran for and was elected to the Junior Advisory Committee (JAC). Emily Irwin was not able to attend the convention but she did send entries in the scrapbook contests and did very well. The paper scrapbook was first place, and the digital scrapbook was fourth place. Thanks go to Aaron Mitchell for letting the digital scrapbook

play on his laptop at the convention. Junior members Kaylen Miller, Emily Irwin and Brock Irwin submitted folding displays and Kaylen’s poster was second in the Junior Folding Display contest. The juniors enjoyed several farm tours and mixers during the convention as well. On the way home they stopped at the Kentucky Derby Museum. The Juniors would like to thank Junior Advisor Glenn Meier, Coach Becky Meier, and chaperone Jen Heinzmann for taking the group to National Convention. Illinois Championship Junior Show During the Illinois Championship Show the juniors had two fundraisers. The first was a “Worker Auction”. Members offered to work for someone and the money raised will go towards junior activities. This year the auction raised $1050 dollars for the junior fund. Thanks to the following Junior’s who were auctioned off: Lila Sloan, Ryan Sheehan, Todd Irwin, Sarah Sheehan, Miranda Kollman, Morgan Bollech, Aaron Mitchell, Bri Sheehan, Steven Mitchell and Emily Irwin. In addition, we would like to thank the following buyers: Jerry Smith, Bob Miller, Melissa Irwin, Kollmann family, Gene McCoy, Keith Engel, Glenn Meier, and Ed Smith. We sincerely appreciate your financial support of our Junior’s. We also held a Railbird Judging Contest during the show. Thanks to all who bought a judging card to help our fundraising efforts. Illinois State Fair The Superior Young Producer contest was held on Saturday, August 20th during the Illinois State Fair. There were many participants there and they competed by doing a 3 phase contest which included dairy judging, dairy management test and dairy skill-a-thon. The individuals with the top 5 scores were awarded $1,000 scholarships. There were a number of IJHA members

who participated. The recipients for this year were Sarah Sheehan, Morgan Bollech, Emily Irwin, Macy Wendling, and Dylan Reed. Congratulations to all who participated and thanks to Dave Fischer for running the contest. Annual Meeting We encourage all juniors to attend the Annual Meeting, which will be November 19, 2011, at 10:00 am. The meeting will be held at the Hawthorn Suites Hotel, 101 Trade Centre Drive Champaign, Ill. 61820. During the meeting we will be discussing upcoming events including Spring Thing and Fundraising Activities. We will also be recognizing Junior All-Illinois and Reserve AllIllinois recipients and our Production Award winners. Look for the production nomination information in the Herald and also on the Illinois Holstein Website. Please bring your club scrapbook for judging and your YDJM and DJM books for judging. We will also be electing officers for the upcoming year. We will be providing pizza for lunch and drinks. Following the meeting a tour of a local farm is being planned. We encourage all Junior members to attend.
