FROM THE DIRECTORS________ Dear Holstein Breeders, For those who have been following negotiations on the future of genetic evaluations, you may have noticed it has been somewhat quiet since June’s National Convention in Springfield, Mo. For the most part that has been somewhat true, as formal meetings have not taken place between those involved with assembling and carrying out genetic evaluations. However, our national Holstein leaders have made several trips to Washington, D.C., to discuss Holstein’s position on the matter. During that dialogue, our leadership team has been assured that there are not any time restrictions in place at USDA that state when evaluations would need to be conducted by the private sector. Since our convention our leadership has had fruitful discussions with leaders from NDHIA. The voting members of the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding are scheduled to meet and discuss a new version of the proposed Cooperative Agreement October 7 and 8. On the youth front, Holstein Association USA's 2013 Distinguished Junior Member (DJM) and Young Distinguished Junior Member (YDJM) applications are now available at www. holsteinusa.com/juniors. As you know, these awards recognize the most accomplished members of the National Junior Holstein Association, the highest honor given by the Association to youth. Entry materials must be

FROM THE FIELD
Greetings from the field! I’m Tim Ewing, the Holstein Association’s new Field Representative for Illinois. I have been on the job for a couple of months and have met a few of you already and I look forward to visiting more breeders over the next few months. I am appreciative of the hospitality I’ve been shown and the time you have afforded me to show me your herds and around your farms. This is a challenging year for us in the dairy business in this region, so as you consider ways to stretch your available dollars, be sure and take another look at Holstein COMPLETE. By bundling services into one program, Holstein COMPLETE can save you money and help budget your account. If you have any questions about any Holstein Association programs or services, please take a few minutes and give me call. About me personally, my territory also includes Missouri and Arkansas. I am a Fordland, Mo., native, which is just east of Springfield, Mo. My wife, Mary Jean, and I have 3 grown children, Page 6
postmarked by March 1, 2013, to be eligible. Following recommendations from the Junior Advisory Committee, which were approved by the board of directors, applications for both the DJM and YDJM contests have been significantly revamped. Those familiar with the contest in previous years should make note of the changes before working on 2013 applications. Many sections were combined or shortened, reducing the total length of the required entry portfolio. In addition, a video section has been added to the application. To help explain the changes and answer any questions youth or youth leaders may have about the application, Holstein Association USA will be hosted an informational webinar on the subject. Our next national board meeting is scheduled for November 14 and 15. If you have any matters that should be brought to our attention, please give us a call.
Tabatha, Jason, and Thomas, and we just recently relocated to our homeplace after spending 3 years in the Madison, Wis., area working for East Central/Select Sires. Prior to that, we had milked registered Holsteins and were involved with my family’s registered Polled Hereford herd in the Fordland area. I am a University of Missouri graduate and activities while there included FarmHouse Fraternity, Block and Bridle Club, and I participated on the Livestock and Dairy judging teams. I also served several years on our local school and I was a member of YDLI Class 4. Again, don’t be bashful about contacting me with any questions or concerns. It always good to have calls to return as it makes the trips seem a little shorter.

FROM THE PRESIDENT It’s amazing the roller coaster ride that is the Dairy Business. If not a period of record low prices we see extreme increases in the cost of production and throw in an incredible drought or other weather event from time to time and we see just how resilient the Dairyman really is. What an incredible year it’s been. From the beautiful weather this spring and early summer to the extreme heat and drought that followed. I guess that’s why we look forward to the change of seasons so much. Christmas is just around the corner. Once again our members have shown the tremendous quality of Holsteins we have in Illinois at the summer shows. I’m sure many will go on to do big things this fall. In case you missed this year’s State Picnic, the hosts were Dave and Gary Ludwig of Ludwig Farms and Creamery in Fithian, just east of Champaign. From champion Holsteins to champion cheeses, the Ludwig family has a good thing going. Be sure to thank them for their hospitality. Without members like them, events like this would not be possible. As many of you have heard the Illinois Golden Opportunity Sale has been moved from the traditional date at the end of October to the spring of 2013. This change has been made to increase the potential of the sale. In addition we will be having the first ever Illini Futures Sale during the 2012 Sate Convention on December 6 in Effingham. The changes have been made to continue promoting Illinois Holsteins and to increase opportunities for our members and surrounding dairymen to market their registered Holsteins. In closing, I must say this summer was my first opportunity to attend the National Convention. What a tremendous event and what a super job done by the Missouri Holstein Association. I would highly recommend to anyone that hasn’t been to a National Convention that you should go. The next three are all in the Midwest including Illinois in 2015. As the planning process continues, get involved and take part in the many friendships and opportunities that can be made. It will definitely be worth the time.

Championship Show Dedication In Memory of William Lewis “Lewie” Porter
The 2012 Illinois Championship Holstein Show was dedicated in memory of William Lewis “Lewie” Porter. The award was presented in memory of Wilmer Smith of Clearfield Holsteins, Davis Wilmer was a longtime Holstein member and exhibitor at the state show. Lewis Porter was involved in the dairy industry for over 70 years of his life. He was born in Illinois and passed away last July in Kentucky. Over the years, Lewie worked for high profile herds such as Rolling Acres Guernseys, Happy Valley Jerseys, Carrousel Farms and Mohrfield Holsteins. Lew was known to be an extremely meticulous cattleman - from raking shavings down the center isle all the same direction, to washing tails on a daily basis, and even having a specific “pattern” to the way cows were lined up in the barn, he always made sure the cattle he cared for were looking their finest. “His show herds were always the prettiest in the barn and the cattle were displayed like champions. Although never a spot on him, Lew was as hard a worker as I have ever been around all through his life,” said longtime friend, Norm Nabholz. Lew worked for Carrousel Farms during the early nineties and always brought an excellent string of cattle to the Illinois State Show. Cows that were shown at Expo even made the trip to Illinois Holstein Herald
Lincoln. No matter who Lew worked for, he always exhibited a great deal of class in and out of the barns. For his employees, he has a set of rules that they had to follow - shirts were worn at all times, even if it meant that he had to sacrifice a $100 shirt from his own closet, recalls Kevin Kriegel. “I was vaccinating heifers and got splattered pretty good, so I took my shirt off to milk. Lew came in the barn and said, ‘You know the rules.’ I told him I wasn’t putting that shirt back on, so he went and gave me one of his shirts for me to wear!” Norm had this to say about Lew, “Every young person that was interested in exhibiting cattle should have had to work for Lew as an introductory lesson in the art of properly exhibiting dairy cattle. Lew Porter defined the word GENTLEMAN.” For all of his hard work and dedication, Lew received the Klussendorf award in 1969. A few years ago, Lew was interviewed for the “Legends of the Tanbark Trail” book and he had this to say: “At that time we showmen helped each other. We slept in the barns with our cattle. Several of us would team up and hire one fellow to run lines at night. My favorite and also the favorite of many showmen was Snow. He was a black man with snow white hair. Every morning when we got up there was never a dirty cow. He
was a good man and friend to the show crews. Each herd had a display and they were always so beautifully done. I recall washing Jerseys at Waterloo and my Jersey friends thought I was crazy. They were using green soap and heavy blankets. I used only sweat blankets after washing. Then, everyone got rid of the heavy blankets and started washing and using sweat blankets. Animals were left uncovered during the day for viewing by show visitors.” Lew Porter’s wife, Elanor, and family are with us today to accept the dedication award. Lew Porter will certainly always be remembered for the meticulous care he put into the farms he worked at and his love of the dairy cow.

DUTCHESS DOMAIN Hello Illinois Holstein Breeders!! I am overjoyed to introduce myself as your 2012-2013 Illinois Holstein Dutchess. I am the 21-year-old daughter of John and Tammy Wakeley, from Rockford. I graduated from Winnebago High School in 2009 and from Highland Community College in 2011, with my Associate Degree of Applied Science Agricultural Management. Since then I have returned home and have been working on my parents’ 100-cow dairy farm. My mom and I do all the milking, and I’m working alongside her to learn all of our breeding and vaccination protocols. I am a member of the Boone-Winnebago Holstein club, where I also serve on the Board of Directors. I’m looking forward over the next year to represent the industry that has shaped me into the person I am today. I would like to congratulate all the exhibitors at both the Illinois State Show and the Illinois State Fair. It was my honor to be able to help
with the award presentation at the shows, and I would like to thank my 1st runner-up Becca Sprague, and my little misses Olivia Corson and Megan Busker for their help at the State Show as I was showing during most of the junior show. It was great seeing so many of you at the State Picnic at Ludwig Dairy. I have also been asked to help with the award presentation at the International Junior Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo on Tuesday, October 2. I hope to see many of our Illinois Holstein juniors on the colored shavings. We have our Senior Holstein Convention on December 6-7, in Effingham, and hope many of you are able to make it. As this long, hot summer comes to an end and we all hopefully start to see cooler temperatures move in, and all though fall harvest seems to already be in full swing, I wish everyone a safe and happy harvest! I would also like to remind everyone that you can stay updated on new Illinois Holstein information on the Illinois Holstein Association website. hirty years after Corey took his first show calf to the Manitowoc County Fair (the only March calf born on the farm that year), her great-granddaughter, Ran-Rose Blitz Allstar EX-93 was named Grand Champion of the open show which featured over 100 Holsteins. Allstar will qualify for the 125,000 lb. class before the end of the month.

ne week later, Ripp-Co Million Desire, a yet-to-be-scored junior two year old that traces back to long-time friend Rob Rippchen’s early show calf, Ripvalley Pete Dottie EX-94, was named Grand Champion of the Calumet County Junior Fair. Desire was one of the 4-H projects for Kayla Krahn, the sister of Ran-Rose herdsman Josh Krahn. Both are shown in the photo above.
esire has a Gold Chip heifer calf on the ground along with a Braxton sister on the farm. Desire’s dam, Ripp-Co Damion Deere EX-91, is now owned by Jason Volker of Iowa. Meanwhile, Allstar is in her fourth lactation and will soon be flushed to Goldsun.

Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? I had a lot of exposure to UW from an early age as my four older siblings all graduated from Madison. Therefore, it was an easy choice for me and it offered me everything I had hoped to gain in my time in college. Badger sports in the Big Ten, the AGR fraternity and the dairy judging team all were important in attracting me to UW as well. What has been your most memorable college experience? This spring I studied abroad in The Netherlands for a semester and definitely had a once in a lifetime opportunity. It forced me to step outside of my comfort zone and I know I gained a lot from my time overseas. Road tripping to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl and the yearly trips to The Royal were also great times too. What has been your favorite course? Dairy Herd Management 433 and Ag Finance 419 were both great courses that were extremely relevant and practical. Dairy Science 375, Dairying in Mexico, was probably my favorite as we had a two week field study to Mexico that was a great out of the classroom learning experience. What are your future career goals? To work for Holstein USA as a classifier upon graduation while staying involved in my family's farm. Eventually I see myself returning home to further expand and diversify our herd and farm.

Our August classification was very succesful as six more cows entered the Excellent category. Two full sisters by Braxton out of Goldwyn Glory became 9th generation Excellents. We also had a new five generation Excellent and a new three generation Excellent. Four-of-a-Kind Mariposa went EX-90 (92-MS) at 3-03 after winning Best Udder at the Wisconsin Valley Fair. There were also two new 92 point cows and three new 91s. We welcome all attendees to the Wisconsin Holstein Convention next February to see these cows and their herdmates. Introducing... Bosside Holsteins started in August 1990 on Prince Edward Island, Canada. John and Tineke Boschma left Holland after John’s brother Durk and his wife moved to the home farm where they still farm today. We purchased a farm with 30 cows, 100 acres, machinery and quota. The second year 22 cows filled that quota so we needed more quota and bought the neighbor’s quota but had to milk there because of the milk board rules. In 1993 we moved to a bigger farm with more land and quota and slowly expanded to get ready for the next generation. In 2000 son Hank graduated from high school and came home to farm. We were up to 70 cows and financed to the max (mostly money tied up in quota). In 2001 John came to Wisconsin for World Dairy Expo with a Purina tour and toured several parts of Wisconsin. The tour stopped in at Twin-B, Kingdom Haven and Harmony-Ho and John fell in love with the area. We found a farm in Colby with a tie-stall barn and 300 acres. We built a freestall and parlor to house up to 200 cows with John & Tineke Boschma daughter Dorithy, son-in-law Timmy and son Hank. Dorithy and Timmy had their first baby boy, Josh, in January 2006, and decided to move back to P.E.I. that spring. They had another son, Alex, in 2010 and they live and work in New Brunswick. Hank built his own coverall barn in 2007, picked 25% of the herd and started Sky Reach Holsteins. In 2009 Hank bought his own farm in Milan (six miles from us) and in 2010 married Shannon van Doorn who works at Riesterer & Schnell Inc. in Medford. Our youngest daughter Janie is looking for a job in journalism, will be moving to Washington D.C. with her partner Casey and takes care of updating the Bosside Holsteins website. Last year we had a chance to sell the farm and did so. We purchased 40 acres up the road and built a new tie-stall and house to focus more on genetics. What we like in this area is the great infrastructure; the best ultrasound vet in the country, top notch nutritionists, agronomists, banks, machinery dealers and a wide choice of dairy plants that want our milk along with 10 A.I. companies to pick from! Bosside Holsteins, P.E.I, Canada In 1995 we bought a two-year-old Tesk from the Robthom Ivory Mark family with help from Ray Leblanc. We flushed Lenzway Tesk Ruby T Rita with Juror because we liked his sire stack: Blackstar, Mark, Sexation and Bootmaker. The flush gave us one bull calf: Bosside Ruben. In short, Roger Turner liked him and years later he was number two on the list. After moving to Colby, we had a nice Boss two-year-old from the same cow family that Jay Jauquet wanted to use Oman on. That flush gave us a bull, Bosside AltaRoss, and a heifer, Bosside O-Man Rachel. Rachel had a Jose daughter, Rachele, and we have an Atwood and Bowser yearling at the farm from Rachele. From Boss’ sister Ruby we have a nice Atta Boy. We have also purchased embryos from the Genex MOET program which gave us a chance to use different bulls like Mascol x Form Bret x Yadda. We ended up with one bull, Coop Bosside Massey, and a heifer, Coop Bosside Yelonda. This pedigree is different - an outcross and very unique. We have Dr. Buchner flush 3-6 animals every 6 weeks year round. We value cow families and pay attention when we make matings. There are several bulls that we don’t want in a pedigree. We use mostly genomic bulls - we like 70% a lot better than just the parent average from years ago. Through genomics we can sort the best heifers out for flushing and the best bulls to use on them. We look at cow families, sire stack, type, production, plus components, strong health traits and low SCC. With each mating we like to improve each animal and if it happens to be a bull we like to try to get it in A.I. or raise it for natural service. In the past, bulls that worked well for us were: Blackstar, Tesk, Juror, Rudolph, Shottle and Advent. We are both active church members at First Presbyterian in Abbotsford. The Kaskaskia College Dairy Specialist Team recently won the National PAS (Postsecondary Agricultural Students) Dairy Specialist Contest held in Des Moines, IA. In this competition, students must complete problem-solving activities related to dairy nutrition, herd health, facilities-management, genetics, and reproduction. Contestants completed an individual exam, the solved case-study type problems that dairy managers face today. There were nearly 30 teams in the competition from across the country representing both two-year and four-year colleges and universities. In addition, to taking home first-place honors, the KC team had the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th place individual winners.

Junior Journeys The Illinois Juniors have been very busy this summer with various shows, National Convention, and dairy promotion events. Below is a report of some of our summer activities. National Convention • Our trip got off to a bumpy start when we spent three hours roadside trying to fix a blown tire. Members of the senior dairy bowl/jeopardy van got the opportunity to ride in an old, non-airconditioned ambulance. • The junior jeopardy contestants, Kate Carlson and Connor Erbsen, represented Illinois well. Kate placed fourth. • Intermediate Jepordy contestant, Ryan Sheehan made it to the semifinals. • Senior Jepordy contestants, Sarah Sheehan and Aaron Mitchell were fourth and fifth respectively. • The Junior Dairy Bowl team consisting of Emily Irwin, Riley Zettle, Anna Folgate, and Bria Koester placed fourth. • Senior Dairy Bowl team consisting of Matt Drendel, Levi Martin, Phillip Shanks, and Morgan Bollech won the sportsmanship award. • Folding display participants were Kate Carlson, Emma Carlson, Adam Olbrich, and Andrea Willing. Kate Carlson’s poster placed first in the junior division. • Emily Irwin and Brock Irwin won Progressive Breeder Awards at the Junior
Clinton County Junior News The Clinton County Junior Holstein Show was held on July 16, 2012, at the Clinton County Fairgrounds in Carlyle. Clint Harre of WilRa Holsteins, Nashville, Ill., placed the 51head of cattle brought to the ring. Congratulations to Taylor Huels of Carlyle on her Grand Champion of the Junior Show and 1st 4-year-old, Horstlyle Tal My Kinda Red-ET. Reserve Grand Champion went to Miranda Kollmann of New Baden with the 1st place Junior 2-year-old, TTM Sanchez Lux-ET. Miranda Kollmann also had Junior Champion of the show with Balsey-Haven Picolo Magic. Dylan Reed of Beecher City took home Reserve Junior Champion honors with Mil-RMor Redliner Pearlie. In addition to the show, the Clinton County Juniors also held their annual judging contest Page 20
Forum. • Speech contestants Emma Carlson, Kate Carlson, and Morgan Bollech participated in the contest. • Emily Irwin represented Illinois in the YDJM contest where she was a finalist. • Illinois juniors occupied their time by taking several farm tours, touring the campus of the College of the Ozarks, attending the junior mixer, watching the National Convention sale, and going to the dance held in a cave! • Check out the next page for pictures from our trip to Missouri! • We would like to give a special thank you to Mil-R-Mor farm for allowing the juniors to work the lunch stand at their sale as a fundraiser. We would also like to thank coaches Becky Meier and Glen Meier, chaperone John Mitchell, and all the other parents who came to share their support for all of us. State Show • Members participated in both junior and open shows as well as showmanship. • The Dutchess contest was held Wednesday night. There were three Dutchess contestants, and two little miss contestants. • Juniors held their meeting Wednesday night. This meeting is taking place instead of our annual fall meeting. We elected new officers and discussed judges for next year’s State Show. Our new officers include: President,
and meeting. The juniors discussed the Spring Thing held in March and proposed a possible farm tour of local farms with robotic milkers, among other social activity possibilities. Lastly, the Clinton County Junior Holstein Club would like to congratulate member Adrienne Brammeier on being named to the IL 4-H Dairy Judging Team. Adrienne will represent Illinois at the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest at World Dairy Expo, Madison, Wis. Adrienne has been involved with registered Holsteins all her life in Ferrin, Ill., the home of DoDel Holsteins. She is currently a freshman at Kaskaskia College pursuing her Associates Degree and plans to judge for the Kaskaskia College Dairy Judging Team. SUPERIOR YOUNG DAIRY PRODUCER AWARD__ The 2012 Superior Young Dairy Producer Award (SYDPA) program was held August 18, at the Illinois State Fair. Twenty 4-H and FFA dairy project members from across Illinois took part in the event. The purpose of the contest is to create an educational activity that promotes youth development, career development, and personal growth through increased knowledge of the dairy industry. This threephase competition, emphasizing the youth’s knowledge of the dairy industry, awarded each of the top five overall participants with a $1,000 scholarship. The 2012 scholarship recipients, in alpha order, are: • Carol Baumann, Wyoming, IL (Stark County) • Anna Folgate, Dakota, IL (Stephenson County) • Kaleb Hoerbert, Delavan, IL (Logan County) • Todd Irwin, Beason, IL (Logan County) • Daniel Obert, Orangeville, IL (Stephenson County) The $5,000 in scholarships was sponsored by Archer Daniels Midland, Decatur, IL. Individual plaques were awarded to the “top 3” in each phase and the “top 5” overall winners. The Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders Association and Illinois State Fair sponsored the plaques. The first phase was a dairy management test relating to dairy nutrition, health, reproduction, milk marketing, and other dairy related information. June Board Meeting Notes June 7, 2012 · Bloomington, Ill. • Minutes from the January meeting and the Treasurers report were approved. • Boyd Schaufelberger gave his Holstein USA National Directors Report and mentioned registrations and classifications are higher than in the past. The “Type Advisory” Committee met and made six recommendations to the Convention in June. A By-laws change will be brought up for vote at the convention and it basically means Districts will need to present two candidates for their Director position or it will become a Director-at-large position open to all districts. Boyd also spoke about Page 22

The second phase was a three station skill-athon on various aspects of the dairy industry. Contestants had to identify dairy feeds, identify parts of the cow, and identify dairy equipment. The top three contestants in the skill-a-thon were: • Carol Baumann, Wyoming, IL (Stark County) • Kaleb Hoerbert, Delavan, IL (Logan County) • Joshua Laesch, Greenville, IL (Bond County) The third phase of the Superior Young Dairy Producer Contest was a judging contest. The judging phase consisted of animal selection by placing four classes of dairy cows and two Bull Stud testing and how the Board of Holstein USA wants the testing to be as affordable as possible for dairymen. • The 2015 National Convention will be held at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Ill. The dates are still being negotiated. Brochures and slogan need to be decided upon by June 2013. • Club are being sought to volunteer to host the 2013 & 2014 State Conventions! 2012 Illinois Convention will be at Hilton Garden Inn, Effingham, December 6 & 7. • The State membership drive has been doing well, but we had 340 unpaid “renewals” as of June 1. Secretary Tina Yagow handed out spreadsheets to representatives of each club for them to hopefully contact those people

The top three contestants for this phase were: • Joshua Laesch, Greenville, IL (Bond County) • Andrew Rice, Sheldon,IL (Iroquois, County) • Brett Woker, Greenville, IL (Bond County) This year marked the 17th consecutive year for the Superior Young Dairy Producer Award Program which has provided $85,000 in college scholarships to Illinois dairy youth since its inception. Participants must be 4-H or FFA dairy project members in Illinois. The program is developed and coordinated by Dave Fischer, University of Illinois Retired Extension Dairy Educator. and personally ask that they renew for this year. As of June 1, we had 134 Junior & 327 Senior members paid, down from 215 & 505 last year. Our dues income was just over $16,000 so far and we budgeted $17,000 profit, so we need more dues to come in this summer to meet that goal. • 2012 Club Rebates will be paid this fall. • January 2013 Committee Meetings will be at The Chateau in Bloomington. Secretary Tina Yagow will check into dates around January 8 & 9, 2013. • Web Reporter Stephanie Stout has resigned, so the Northern Region Reporter position is open and President Wendling is looking for suggestions to fill that role.
