MARATHON COUNTY HOLSTEIN BREEDERS

Introducing...

Rusty-Rose Holsteins

When Lester and Betty (Woldt) Bauman married in 1946, they purchased a farm just across County N from the farm where Lester had grown up, on the north side of the road, to start their family. They had three children, Gary, Russ and Bonnie. Gary married and eventually purchased what had been the home farm on the south side of County N. Russ went on to become a barber and purchased a small shop in Dorchester, Wis. In 1979, Lester had developed emphysema and could no longer farm. That is when life changed forever for the Russ Bauman family as we decided to purchase the farm and continue the dairying tradition. The farm consisted of 160 acres and the barn held 38 stanchions and had two silos. Our first big remodeling project was in 1981. We built on a small section to the barn to add a few tie-stalls so we have a total of 43 stanchions and tie-stalls. We put in a manure pit and added pens to house more heifers at this time. In 1986 we added a silo for high moisture corn. In 2003 we built a heifer shed because we had run out of room for all our replacements in the barn. Then in 2009 we put up a coverall to store hay. In 1988, we purchased a registered heifer calf, Milkyhill Crystals Glory, from Ed Mielke, Jr. She was sired by Milkyhill Crystals Jewel. When she calved with a heifer in 1990, we picked Rusty-Rose as our prefix. Almost 25% of our herd are descendents of Glory. We have purchased a few more registered cows or heifers since but most of the herd is descended from the original herd purchased from Russ’ dad. About eight years ago, we decided to start identifying our grades. Russ’ mom had kept such good records that I could trace most cow families back eight or nine generations so the entire herd is either 99% or 100%RHA. Our rolling herd average is 24,237 3.7 890 3.0 731. We use Select Sires exclusively and have had many wonderful daughters from sires such as Blackstar, Emory, Forbidden, OMan, Zenith, Blitz and BWMarshall and we have especially enjoyed milking many daughters of MrSam. We currently have some hard working Sanchez, Million, Sana, Socrates, and Damion daughters milking and are looking forward to our Shot, Guthrie, Dempsey, and Braxton heifers coming in to the herd. Twice a year, Perry Phend mates the cows through Select Mating Service. We strive for cows that have good legs and feet and udders that hold up well. Quite a few of our animals have been sold for dairy replacements and we always hope that they do well for their new owners. We have three grown children, Jen, Scott and Melissa, that have pursued careers away from the farm. It probably won’t be too long before we will be looking at retirement to spend more time with our seven grandchildren. Thank you very much to the Marathon County Holstein Breeders for helping to sponsor this ad. Hope everyone enjoyed themselves at the state convention in our county this year.

The University of

WISCONSIN MADISON Dairy Science Student Profile Name: Christine McFarland Hometown: Watertown, WI High School: Watertown High School Class Size: 325 Farm: McFarlandale Dairy Major: Dairy Science and Life Sciences Communications Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? I chose to attend UW-Madison for several reasons. First and foremost, I believe UW-Madison is a very prestigious school and has one of the strongest dairy science departments in the country. I really enjoy the camaraderie and pride of being a Wisconsin Badger. In addition, I was very impressed with the quality of professors, industry professionals and cutting-edge research that the university has to offer. There are so many opportunities for students to get involved in the lab or on the dairy cattle center located in the heart of campus. After touring UW-Madison and the department of dairy science I knew that it was the school for me. What has been your most memorable college experience? My favorite college memory has to be attending Badger football games. There is something magical about Madison on game day. I love seeing all the friendly Wisconsin fans, tailgating, and watching the Badgers dominate on the field! What has been your favorite course? My favorite dairy science course has been dairy herd management. I really enjoyed the class because it was so practical and I could take the information home and talk about it with my parents. The course consisted of roughly two week segments on various topics taught by industry professionals. A few of the segments included dairy records management, milk quality, calf and heifer management, dairy nutrition, and reproduction management. What are your future career goals? I will be graduating from in May 2013. I am actively searching for a dairy sales position involving feed or pharmaceuticals. I want to travel around Wisconsin, consulting with dairy farmers to help improve their farm in one aspect or another. I really want to stay in Wisconsin, America’s Dairyland and stay involved in an industry that I hold dear to my heart.
