District News Tri-County

2008 Greetings! On February 6th we lost one of the patriarchs of our club and of the national Holstein Association, J. George Smith. He was known and respected by many Holstein breeders; a complete tribute can be found in this issue. Other club news includes Beth Engel’s recognition at the state Farm Bureau meeting for her work with Kane county’s ag education programs. For 24 years Beth has been part of Ag Days when all the 4th graders of Kane County are invited to Mooseheart where many different aspects of agriculture share their story. Stephanie and Nicole Stout, granddaughters of Tri-County members Bill & Kathy Lenschow, have been selected to serve as Executive Mangers of the RWDCA. Together, they will share in the responsibilities of promotion, merchandising, programs and services,

membership communications, and herdbook functions. In mid-January Matt Engel, traveling with Matt Sloan of Wisconsin, made the 26 hour, 10,100 mile air trip to New South Wales, Australia. The two made the journey in order to work for Frasser Holsteins; they were on the farm for three days before they made the 14 hour trip to Tatura, Australia, for International Dairy Week, host of Australia’s largest dairy show. Australia does not boast gooseneck trailers; rather, cattle were taken to the show in simple trailers pulled behind a truck or in a straight (grain) truck. Matt told me that this was quite the experience because driving was done “English” style—on the left side of the road in a vehicle with its clutch on the left side! There were over 400 head of Holsteins at the show; Matt was impressed with the quality of the animals and explained the probably 90% were out of North American bulls, especially Semex, ABS, and Select. The Grand Champion was a Terrason (Joel Keitzman part owner); the Reserve was a Comestar Lee. Frasser

Holsteins owned the Honorable Mention cow, a Leader. Matt also shared with me that he found Australians to be very nice people who were interested in American cattle and breeding practices. They are in the midst of a 7 year drought; during Matt’s time there, they had a 4 inch rain—the most rain at one time in this 7 year period! One consequence is that good hay is to be purchased at $500/ton. And finally, Matt enjoyed seeing the occasional kangaroo roaming the countryside, but he did not appreciate the spiders or snakes! Respectfully submitted, Linda Drendel ldrendel@fvi.net
