From the President... As we enter the month of March, it is easy to forget the winter that is behind us and look forward to spring: warmer weather, spring planting, improved milk prices, spring consignment sales, and spring training. Plans for 2010 for our state association were put into motion at our state convention last December. Your executive committee met in February in order to insure that those plans be met, and we look forward to seeing you throughout the year. However, our state association needs to look beyond this year and to the year 2015 when we will host the National Holstein Convention. Yes, 2015 may seem a long way away, but planning needs to start now. The last time Illinois hosted the national convention was in 1975, and forty years between conventions will present some challenges. In 1975, Illinois had over 1400 members; today our membership in not quite 700. With nearly half the members to share the worklad now, we will all need to do our part. Many of those who held leadership roles in the 1975

convention are no longer actively involved with registered Holstein work. In many cases, the next generation will be the ones to lead the way. Also, our state will need EVERYONE’S support so that the 2015 convention is truly a memorable event. I believe the first step for us all is an awareness of what it really takes to host a convention. Minnesota will host the 2010 event, and I encourage all of you to attend and learn first hand what it is that makes up a national convention. What would you like to see happen in 2015? What would you like to change or add? Secondly, I ask that each club and each member begin to consider how they can contribute to the success of the 2015 convention. We will need leaders, we will need committee members, and we will need funds to back our work. At the state level, we have begun the work. But we can only go so far; we need you. WHAT can you do?

From the Director... Hello to all Holstein breeders as we anxiously anticipate spring. It seems as though winter gets longer every year, but I believe it reallly has been longer this year. Hopefully, with recovering milk prices, the spring cattle sales will be strong this year. Two new field reps have joined Holstein USA recently to serve in the Midwest. Callie Unruh from Kansas will serve Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas and Dennis Devore will have Iowa and southwest Wisconsin as his territory. We welcome them and wish them well in their new jobs. Holstein USA continues to present the DPSP program to other industry players to work to improve how milk is priced and marketed. We still have a long way to go but have made great strides to date. Many groups have endorsed the plan with AMPI being a significant supporter to date. For details on the program go to the Holstein USA website and click on the DPSP box. Any director would be glad to answer your questions or take comments on the program. A new TPI formula was included in the January Sire Summaries. As recommended by the Genetic Advancement Committe, the new formula places more weight on health Page 6

traits while decreasing type and production slightly. This was done to increase progress in reproduction and longevity while recognizing much progress has already been made in type and production. The Holstein board will be meeting in late March. The Management-by-Objective Business Plan will be reviewed. Business has remained strong, but finances are stressed due to growing receivables. The impact of inbreeding continues to be a challenge with genomics having the potential to accelerate its effect. If you have any thoughts or ideas on what your organization should be working on, please feel free to call me or any of your directors.

Revisiting Wet Corn and Mycotoxin Spring Risks D airy managers need to remain vigilant as warmer spring weather can cause shelled corn to deteriorate in bins and storage units. With the late fall harvest and need to dry corn rapidly, shelled corn may not dry enough in bins which can lead to heating, mold growth, and mycotoxin increases. The following questions and answers may avoid problems this spring. What moisture level in stored shelled corn can lead to problems? Shelled corn over 14 percent moisture can heat and allow for mold growth. Turning on fans to move air may reduce the risk. If corn fines (broken corn pieces and small kernels) have been removed prior to storage, fewer problems may be expected.

Is high moisture shelled corn at risk? If the moisture content of high moisture shelled corn is correct for your storage unit (25 to 28 percent moisture for oxygen limiting units, 28 to 32 percent for conventional silos, and 30 to 35 percent for bags or bunker storage), corn should be stable if the pH of the fermented shelled corn is under 4.5. Removal rates from storage may need to be increased to keep the face of the high moisture corn fresh and avoid secondary fermentation (mold and yeast development and heating). Removal rates of greater than six inches per day from the surface may be needed to keep wet corn stable prior to feeding. If your wet corn was snaplage (cob, husk, and some plant parts) or high moisture ear corn, moisture levels should be higher to ensure optimal fermentation. What levels of mycotoxins can be a concern? Mycotoxin risk levels for dairy cattle are listed in Table 1 (levels expressed on a total ration dry matter basis; not only corn). Results from a commercial Wisconsin lab indicates the percent of sample over the safe level in Table 1. Other mycotoxins such as aflatoxin and T2 have not been reported as field problem at this point. Vomitoxin is a “marker” mycotoxin indicating other mycotoxins may be present.

What signs of mycotoxin risks can be monitored in my dairy cattle? 1. Rumen disorders and reduced microbial digestion (cud chewing reduced, higher milk urea nitrogen levels, and variable feed intake) 2. Looser fecal discharges (manure scores under 3) 3. Reduced dry matter intake (drop in one to two pounds per cow per day) 4. Lower milk yields or components as dry matter declines What other management factors could be considered? • Watch the quality of your shelled corn looking for signs of heating, mold development, and damaged corn kernels. • Testing for mycotoxins can be expensive and misleading; getting a representative sample is difficult. • Adding a mycotoxin tested flow agent can reduce the impact of toxins. Check with your supplier to be sure their produce will be effective on vomitoxin (also called DON) which is the most common mycotoxin. A commercial flow agent (binder) containing yeast cell wall extracts or MOS products are recommended. • Young animals and pregnant cattle are at higher risk while steers can tolerate higher levels. • Distillers grain produced from ethanol production can raise the level of toxins in the distillers grain by two to three times the level found in the original corn used; your supplier should have test results on their distillers grain. • If propionic acid was added at ensiling, be sure the level is adequate to maintain the desired pH and prevention of heating when warm weather raises the temperature of the wet corn. Article compliments of Dr. Mike Hutjens, Dairy Extension Specialist

New Total Performance Index (TPI) Introduced by Holstein Association USA With the January genetic evaluations, a new Total Performance Index (TPISM) formula was introduced by Holstein Association USA. Recognizing the needs, strengths and opportunities in the Holstein breed, some slight modifications have been made to the formula, which was last updated in May 2007. TPI is used to rank Holstein cattle and assist dairy producers worldwide in identifying superior cattle with a combination of high production, sound conformation and desirable health and fertility. "The Genetic Advancement Committee recommended the update to the TPI formula to reflect the wants and needs of today's dairymen," said Dr. Tom Lawlor, Holstein Association USA Director of Research and Development. "The opportunity to improve the lower heritability health and fertility traits is greater now than ever before with the information provided by genomic evaluations." The updated TPI formula includes an increased emphasis on Productive Life (PL) and Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR); maintains the current emphasis on udders and feet and legs; aims to slow the increase in body size; and slightly reduces the emphasis on production. New weights for the major categories include: 42 percent on production (down from 45 percent), 33 percent on health and fertility (up from 27 percent), and 25 percent on conformation (down from 28 percent).

*The value 1815, adjusts for our periodic base change, allowing TPI values to be comparable across time. This change comes along with the updating of the genetic base, which occurs every five years, to ensure the genetic evaluations are being compared to a current and up-to-date population. The new base now reflects cows born in 2005, whereby the average PTA of those cows equals zero. Some adjustments to the major traits include: Milk - 415 Fat - 15 Protein - 14 PTAT - 0.87 UDC - 0.85 FLC - 0.65 With questions or for more information about the updated TPI formula, contact Tom Lawlor at 800.952.5200, ext. 4228.
