As I write this month‘s Publisher‘s Page, CNN is reporting that President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt has resigned and left the city of Cairo. As Americans embedded with the ideology that all men are created equal and that we are all born with inalienable rights, we can understand and have been in full support of the Egyptian revolution. The Egyptian people have lived in a repressed state where poverty and political persecution have reigned for decades. The site of the weeks long protests in Tahir Square have been nothing short of magnificent. Thugs slinging rocks and whips on horseback and camelback could not deter them. Mubarak‘s fake stand at concessions such as having elections in September could not deter them. The threat of military action could not deter them. The awkward and short sighted statements of such people as Dick Cheney proclaiming Mubarak‘s character as a good friend and good man could not deter them. The quest for freedom has no limits, no fears and no road back! President Obama was steadfast in putting our nation‘s support on the side of the people. He understands as we all do that the cries for liberation are heard to the deafest ears. We as Americans support the Egyptian people and agree wholeheartedly with their shouts of ―Alahu Akbar‖... ―God is Great!‖ On the cover of this month‘s issue is the stately Carol Mosley Braun. Ms. Braun is waging an aggressive battle in her quest to become the next mayor of Chicago. She is a woman with a remarkable past and remarkable story. We wish Ms. Braun continued success. We profile several people this month. First, we discuss ―Lil Pat ― Sullivan. Lil Pat is an upcoming R&B/Hip Hop artist. He has a smooth style of crooners of generations past. Good luck Lil Pat! We look at the amazing art of St. Louis‘ Philece Roberts. Ms. Roberts has artistic style that is brazing with colors and definition. She is truly ―The Artista!‖ Chicago based gospel singer Tina J. Crawley is a musician that has traveled the world spreading her love for her music and for humankind. Be sure to purchase Mrs. Crawley‘s upcoming CD.

Carol Elizabeth Moseley Braun (born August 16, 1947) is an American feminist politician and lawyer who represented Illinois in the United States Senate from 1993 to 1999. She was the first and to date only African-American woman elected to the United States Senate, the first woman to defeat an incumbent senator in an election, and the first and to date only female Senator from Illinois. From 1999 until 2001, she was the United States Ambassador to New Zealand. She was a candidate for the Democratic nomination during the 2004 U.S. presidential election. In November of 2010, Braun began her campaign for Mayor of Chicago following the retirement of Richard M. Daley. Carol Elizabeth Moseley was born in Chicago, Illinois. She attended public and parochial schools. She attended Ruggles School for elementary school, and she attended Parker High School (now the site of Paul Robeson High School) in Chicago. Her father, Joseph Moseley, was a Chicago police officer and jail guard and her mother, Edna, was a medical technician in a hospital. Both her parents were Catholic. The family lived in a segregated middle class neighborhood in the South Side of Chicago. Her parents divorced when she was in her teens, and she lived with her grandmother. She began her college studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, but dropped out after four months. She then majored in political science at the University of Illinois at Chicago, graduating in 1969 and earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1972. As an attorney, Moseley Braun was a prosecutor in the United States Attorney's office in Chicago from 1973 to 1977. An Assistant United States Attorney, she worked primarily in the civil and appellate law areas. Her work in housing, health policy, and environmental law won her the Attorney General's Special Achievement Award. Moseley Braun was first elected to public office in 1978, as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives. There, she rose to the post of assistant majority leader. As a State Representative, she became recognized as a champion for liberal social causes. As early as 1984, she proposed a moratorium on the application in Illinois of the death penalty.

And in what became a landmark reapportionment case, Crosby vs State Board of Elections, she successfully sued her own party and the state of Illinois on behalf of African American and Hispanic citizens. When she left the state legislature in 1987, her colleagues recognized her in a resolution as "the conscience of the House." That same year, she was elected as Cook County, Illinois, Recorder of Deeds, a post she held for four years. In 1991, angered by incumbent Democratic senator Alan Dixon's vote to confirm Clarence Thomas, Moseley Braun challenged him in the primary election. Candidate Albert Hofeld's campaign ran many anti-Dixon ads, and Moseley Braun won the primary, ultimately defeating Richard S. Williamson in the Senate election. On November 3, 1992, she became the first African American woman to be elected to the United States Senate. Her election marked the first time Illinois had elected a woman, and the second time a black person was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate. She (along with Edward Brooke) was one of two African-Americans to serve in the Senate in the 20th century, and was the sole African-American in the Senate for her entire term.

Carol Moseley Braun was a one-term Senator, losing to Republican Peter Fitzgerald in her re-election bid in 1998. Despite her reputation as a liberal, Moseley Braun possessed something of a centrist record on economic issues. She voted for the 1993 budget package and against the welfare reform laws passed in 1996, but on many other matters she was more conservative. Moseley Braun voted in favor of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and lawsuit reform measures like the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act (she was also among the minority of Democrats to support the even more controversial Common Sense Product Liability and Legal Reform Act of 1995). She also voted contrary to the interests of the more populist wing of the party by voting for the Freedom to Farm Act and the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Like her Illinois colleague, fellow Democrat Paul Simon, she voted in favor of a Balanced Budget Amendment to the United States Constitution and also to place a nuclear spent fuel storage facility in Nevada, a move strongly opposed by many Democrats, especially current Majority Leader Harry Reid.

On social issues however, she was significantly more liberal than many of her fellow senators. She was strongly pro-choice, voting against the ban on partialbirth abortions and the restrictions on funding in military bases for abortions. She also voted against the death penalty and in favor of gun control measures. Moseley Braun was one of only sixteen senators to vote against the Communications Decency Act and one of only fourteen to vote against the Defense of Marriage Act. She delivered a eulogy to Thurgood Marshall on January 26, 1993. Moseley Braun was the subject of a 1993 Federal Elections Commission investigation over $249,000 in unaccounted-for campaign funds. The agency found some small violations, but took no action against Moseley Braun, citing a lack of resources. Moseley Braun only admitted to bookkeeping errors. The Justice Department turned down two requests for investigations from the IRS. In 1996, Moseley Braun made a private trip to Nigeria, where she met with dictator Sani Abacha. Despite U.S. sanctions against that country due to Abacha's actions, the Senator did not notify, nor register her trip with, the State Department. She subsequently defended Abacha's human rights records in Congress. 18

Her former fiancé Kgosie Matthews, who also served on her campaign staff (in violation of U.S. immigration regulations), had been a lobbyist for the Nigerian government; Matthews would later leave the country. She had paid Matthews, a native of South Africa, a salary of $15,000 a month during the campaign. In 1998, after George Will wrote a column reviewing the allegations of corruption against her, Moseley Braun responded to Will's comments, saying that "I think because he couldn't say nigger, he said corrupt," She also compared Will to a Ku Klux Klansman, saying "I mean this very sincerely from the bottom of my heart: He can take his hood and put it back on again, as far as I'm concerned." Later, Moseley Braun apologized for her remarks. She announced her intention to run for the Democratic Party presidential nomination in February 2003. On January 15, 2004, four days before the Iowa caucuses, Moseley Braun dropped out of the race and endorsed Howard Dean.

She currently runs a private law firm, Moseley Braun LLC in Chicago. Moseley Braun has launched a line of organic food products called Ambassador Organics. In 1973 she married Michael Braun, whom she met in law school. They had one son, Matthew, in 1977. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1986. She resides in Hyde Park, Chicago. She is a member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority. In April 2007, Braun suffered a broken wrist when a mugger emerged from bushes near her front door to steal her purse, cutting the strap with a knife. Braun resisted and fell during the struggle, fracturing her left wrist.

FEBRUARY 2011 The mugger was chased off by a University of Chicago student while his girlfriend called 9-1-1. Braun was later treated and released from a hospital. A suspect, Joseph Dixon, was later charged with the crime and was sentenced to 20 years in prison on July 11, 2008. ―My Administration will lead a Midwest-wide effort to increase the venture capital available for technology-driven investments. Chicago is blessed with some of the best universities in the world, but we are lagging behind other cities and regions in turning that intellectual capital into high-growth technology companies. I will convene a Global Great Lakes Forum of mayors, county board chairs, pension fund managers, endowment fund managers, venture capital support builders and institutional investors to convene quarterly to share success stories and develop benchmarks and strategies to increase the venture capital investment in Chicago and Midwest high-growth technology companies. Our first order of business will be a proposal to develop a $2 billion fund with contributions from public and private pension funds throughout the region to focus on B and C round investments for high-growth firms. Our pension funds and our local endowments already invest in venture capital firms – they just do it on the coasts. We can change that.‖

Message from the President One Nation, One Dream – Working Together! Thank you for the opportunity to serve the community in the capacity of President of the Springfield Branch of the NAACP. My administrative style is fully collaborative within the NAACP and among all organizations who work for the common good of the people. My vision is to re-enforce and to rebuild the community from grassroots to corporate boardrooms, addressing local, state, and national issues. Paramount to the welfare of people of color and all those who wish for full enfranchise-ment of every citizen is our support of the United States‘ first Black President, Barack Obama, as long as he leads the nation towards equal enfranchisement of all Americans, not just the elite and wealthy. The United States of America belongs to all of us. Let us educate ourselves concerning issues that affect us all: education, healthcare, and unemployment. Academic success has power to transform our lives from mundane to sublime, particularly the lives of our children. Despite gains in equal political opportunities, personified in Barack Obama, it is a time to be more vigilant than ever. Let the NAACP assist you. Become a member and help us solve problems. Some issues continually affect our community: biased redistricting, lack of voter mobilization, and unavailability of equal opportunities to obtain healthcare for everyone. Unfair redistricting has determined poor political representation for decades. We must be vigilant against control of our vote. During redistricting, lines and boundaries of governing bodies should be drawn so that each district is roughly equal in population according to the most recent census. As important, is that districts are drawn to comply with the central requirements of the Voting Rights Act. New boundary lines must not be drawn so as to dilute the minority vote. In the NAACP‘s effort to represent the community this past October, members and friends rallied with the NAACP in the nation‘s capital. Citizens from every strata of society worked collaboratively to reaffirm the importance of our votes. In addition, the Springfield Branch of the NAACP denounced high-speed rail on 10th Street. Reasons for our opposition include danger of derailment within our community, the lowering of the value of our properties, the threat of noise 51

pollution, and further isolation of East Springfield, a predominantly Black community. Despite relocation of the County Health Clinic to South Grand East, we also are concerned, generally, about so few medical services available in East Springfield. If the rail corridor relocates from 2nd Street to 10th Street, the number of freight trains will increase to 40 to 60 trains per day, interfering with timely access to hospitals and medical clinics that are primarily located in West Springfield. Other train-threats to East Springfield include possible chemical spills. Join the NAACP. Help us gain and maintain full access to all that our community offers. Hold our political and corporate leaders accountable for extending fair, just opportunities to everyone Teresa Haley, MPA President Springfield Branch NAACP Teresa Haley may be contacted at: naacp1908@aol.com

THE OUTDOORSMAN Hello Outdoorsmen and Outdoorsladies! Happy Black History Month This is the time to sit back and think of all of the great days that you have had in the outdoors this last year and say thanks to the almighty for allowing us to have an Outdoors and time to spend in it! February usually is a rather slow month of fishing in Illinois unless you like Ice Fishing. The hunting season is now closed for everything and it is time to clean and store your hunting equipment to get ready for next years hunt. Remember to oil your guns and keep them in a safe and well ventilated place to keep them from rusting. That gun case that is sitting in the corner is not the ideal place for them. Wash and dry your hunting clothes now. You may find
you have some house guest in your pockets if you are not care full. This month is my personal time to get ready for the new fishing year which by the way starts on March 31st of every year. You have to buy new license for everything. I recommend you get a combination license that covers both hunting and fishing after all it is cheaper. There are a lot of new products on the market and new gimmicks that work and a lot of them that do not. Don't be fooled by the ―it will catch fish every time all of time‖ products...they just do not work like that! Fish are not crazy they have to struggle every second of the day of their lives not to be eaten! I would like to give you some websites if I may for you to check out and some for the kids too. After all this is a family outdoors for everybody. Don’t Get Ready... Stay Ready We must be relentless( unbending, strict, adamant, unyielding) in prayer like never before, especially since we have entered into a New Year. We make new years resolutions when really its all about making decisions and being determined to stick with them. Whenever God has done something supernatural in our lives the enemy tries to come and bring doubt and disbelief to our minds, because the mind is the battlefield. The enemy paints a picture as though you didn't get your healing because you are still experiencing symptoms and not realizing that God took the Axe to the root of the problems. The enemy tells you that you didn't get your deliverance and so you go back to thing(s) you got delivered from because you choose to believe a lie rather than the truth. These are just examples of how ―WE‖ allow the enemy to twist are thinking. We have to take authority over our lives, situations and domain in this hour like never before. We must walk in the liberty that we receive when we accepted Jesus in our heart. The word of God says in Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free and be not entangled(to make tangled intertwine, confuse) again, with the yoke of bondage(KJV). Stop going backward! Stand steadfast in what the Lord has done for you. Everything is not the devil‘s fault. As believers we have given him to much glory. We must acknowledge and admit that it was our own thinking and decision making that might have gotten us in the circumstance that we are in. The word of God says that his grace is sufficient. Grace isn't earned, we must choose to walk in it and respond to it. God‘s word will not return void. Everything God did and said that he is going to do, he is faithful to that. Who's report will you believe? This year we are about to see the church (not a building) rise up in the midst of adversity like never before. 67

God is separating the wheat from the tares in this hour. We must believe who we are and believe who God is in us!! Praise God! This is a year of an open heaven in 2011. A year of release. The wealth of the wicked is NOW being released unto the righteous. No more walking in shame and guilt of the past, but we must now walk as those who have the victory. This year we must contend for what is rightfully ours through the blood of Jesus Christ. Stop praying against that evil boss or wicked neighbor. They could be the very ones God has allowed to come into your life for a season to release your stuff... provision for the vision. God said in his word that he daily loads us up with benefits. You should well position yourself to receive your benefits. Keep your ear close to the mouth of God like never before so that you may stay in position. Only the strong will survive. This is a season where you must lay yourself on the altar daily and allow the word of God to examine you through the word. This is how we will grow as men and women of God. In this hour God is cutting bad relationships and restoring families back together again . There is power in unity. Things will change. The word of God says if one can put ten thousand to flight, my God what will we as saints of God do if we come together on one accord? Gods love will never pass away. We will win the unbeliever and the backslider by our love and our lifestyle in this hour. God is releasing some awesome things this year in our lives, if we stay positioned in God and in purpose! Uncommon miracles being released. Hold on tight and don‘t let go I promise you the Lord will bless you this year like never before. While the world is transitioning, we as the body of Christ are being positioned for the Glory of God to be seen through us like never before. If this ministry has been a blessing to you please write me at 3489 Southwind Dr, Gulf Breeze, Florida 32563 or e-mail me at jenniechalden@yahoo.com and tell me your testimonies. Also, if the Lord speaks to you to sow a seed into this anointing on my life please obey the Lord. He will bless you for your obedience and your sacrifice. Please join me every Wednesday at 5am (cst) for Prayer and Intercession as we pray for the nations, America, troops, Body of Christ, marriages, children & youth, the addicted, abuse etc....I also take personal prayer requests. I have been seeing the Spirit of Lord move on our behalf in an awesome way over the prayer line. I encourage all prayer warriors and intercessor to join with me. Also, each Tuesday before we fast from 6am-6pm( seek the Lord for personal instructions). Thanks to all those that have supported this ministry through financial gifts, prayer, fasting and intercession. Blessing upon Prophetess Jennie Chalden. 68

Personal and Growing Awareness There was a time, in the not too distant past, when communication options were limited to only a few such as, telephone, mail, or in person. Today technology has provided innumerable amounts of choices such as email, instant messaging, and texting just to name a few. Many times the question arises, ―can a person become addicted to technology?‖ The answer to this question is ―yes‖! Our new gateway technology has created a one way street to process addiction. A simple definition for ―process addiction‖ means any compulsive-like behavior that interferes with normal living and causes significant negative consequences. Process addiction includes food, sex, gambling, exercising, and internet. The internet is just one of many process addictions and the focus of this article. Initially, one may find it somewhat difficult to grasp becoming addicted to the internet. Process addiction is not separate form chemical dependency and often times interact creating a co-occurring disorder. The new ―gateway‖ behaviors often occur prior to the first chemical use. Statistics suggest 17-41 million people may qualify as compulsive surfers. Internet addictions often co-occur with shopping, gambling, and sex. Why it is so enticing? It is the triple ―A‖ affects which is accessible, anonymous, and affordable. Please remember there are many more areas of process addiction that are not listed such as video games ―gaming‖. It is important to note everyone who surfs the net does not have a process addiction. However, there are many individuals who silently suffer from process addition for several reasons, but primarily because the triple ―A‖ affect creates a secret atmosphere. When talking about the internet it is almost impossible not to mention the growing concerns for how the social networks are being used especially in the African American community. It is important to note that Facebook is for the 69

world to view. Many companies have had to create new policies for their employees concerning Face book. Another growing concern is the lack of awareness in which these social net works are being utilized. For example, Human Resource Departments often look up new applicants on their my space and face book accounts for additional information before investing in a background check. Ask your self ―what‘s on my page?‖, and do not just look at what you have written but the page itself. Often times when treating clients who have an addiction to the internet they state ―my page is restricted‖. I cannot emphasize enough that Face book is for the world to view and nothing is ―restricted‖. And most importantly can be used against you in the court of law. Parents please teach you children this because cyber bullying is a growing concern with strict legally ramifications. And adults, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, and cousins should start setting a good example by using this magnificent source of communication in a positive manner. Another growing concern is the character assassination that takes place on social networks. Many people will e-mail what they would not say in person. Remember truth with out compassion is ―cruelty‖. Often times individuals need to validate themselves with telling the world how perfect their lives are while criticizing others. If you need a measuring stick on proper use of these social networks ―talk about yourself‖ and combat negative comments with positive messages. One last way to measure whether you maybe a compulsive surfer. It takes 28 days to create a habit; if you can stop surfing the net or using Face book for 28 days then you will have your answer. If you cannot stop for 28 days then check and balance with positive and negative consequences. Ideally when a person finds that they have a problem they seek professional help. However, this is not the case and individuals are reluctant to seek help until their lives are in crises. The earlier an individual seek helps the less trauma will be created in their lives. The first step to living a healthy life is to admit the problem and have the courage to make changes. Disregard them, and you may well be taking a big gamble with your mental and emotional well-being. Sylphia Lindsay is an author and Mental Health Therapist. Extraordinary Living with Author Jo Lena Johnson Excerpt from: “If You Really Want to Live, Be Extraordinary!” by Jo Lena Johnson & Dr. Lee Roy Jefferson
“Be Winners, Not Quitters” A Teacher’s Note to Parents Ni-Rita Baker-Bradford, Veteran Educator “Be tenacious, strong willed, positive minded, and spiritual – and you can, and will, make it.” ~ Ni-Rita Baker-Bradford Ni-Rita Baker-Bradford – Veteran Educator, was the first African American Teacher for the Riverview Gardens School District in St. Louis‘ North County. She was one of my biggest influences, as my eighth grade English teacher – she knew how to handle us back then, and she knows how to handle and communicate with today‘s students. If you are a parent, aunt or uncle, educator or simply a concerned citizen, the wisdom shared, if applied, can help us all real-eyes and show our Extraordinary! Questions Asked of Mrs. Baker-Bradford: What are some things that people Really need to know about many 21st Century students/youth? 1. 2.
3.
4.
They are technologically savvy – they know technology like experts. They are more ―street smart,‖ they want to do things pertaining to street life, things that are social. They are bombarded with a sense of violence and strong cultural influences, and education is not a priority for many youth. It has become secondary. Youth have no fear of authority because they compete with authority. They have the attitude that they are just as grown as the person in the position of authority. Many have little self-respect and little respect for others. 71

5.
Many are not goal setters at all - they like to be entertained more than anything. For them, it looks like fun; it‘s life right now: It‘s like, ―Whatever I do, I do it for now.‖
―To reach them, you have to be witty, charming, flexible, and creative in your parenting, teaching, and leadership style. You must be youth-centered and less teacher-centered. The teacher is a facilitator - you get them started at the beginning of class, model the skill, and let them do it and then, it has to be at their own pace. If you don‘t, they easily get frustrated and quit.‖ What are three things you Really want parents to know? 1.
Become more actively involved in your children‘s interests and their decision making process.
2.
Display love daily.
3.
Be their first teachers for EVERYTHING. Don‘t let ―the streets‖ teach them. Don‘t let the television or the media teach them. Don‘t let their peers teach them. Become parents as their ―first teachers‖ all over again. You teach them. That is the role a parent should have in a child‘s life. Act it out!
If parents ignore what you’ve said, what is likely to happen? ―Children who are mildly misbehaving will become incorrigible and perhaps even criminal-minded for lack of discipline from the home.‖ Many parents complain about their kids, and many don’t play active roles in their lives - and can justify their reasons. What do you say to that? ―It‘s unavoidably a sacrifice to be a real parent. You sacrifice everything for your child. Your child must come first; your wants and desires should be secondary. You have to be a nurturer as a parent. You, too, must wear many hats to meet every need and every demand of the child. And above all, you must be a role model. You are whom they see.‖ ―Children will mimic, do what you do. Most likely, if they see you smoke (legal or illegal substances), they will too. If they see you dating many partners (overnight, at your home or away from your home), they will too. If they see you ‗cussin‘ and ‗fussin‘ (in the house or in the car), they will do it too. Face it; we have all witnessed or know of such scenes. Make sure you are guiding them by example. 72

In other words, Parents, you need to be the role model, the extraordinary example for your children. Don‘t leave it to the outsiders—entertainers, athletes, and rappers. Those outside the home and community are sadly the usual choices. What are the top four things people in the Church Community could do to Support Families with Children? 1. 2. 3. 4.
Provide role models through sponsored activities. Provide outside resources. Sponsor or offer counseling. Mentor youth and young adults.
―Sometimes parents don‘t understand, or are not equipped to deal with some of the challenges their children face. If a child is deemed learning deficient, bi-polar, or faces other problems, the child and family need help to manage and overcome. If the community and/or the church provide practical solutions to the family as appropriate, it could be strong support during the recovery period.‖ What do you say to church leaders of today? Society and the church must become a support mechanism to families. You must be resourceful. You must interactively provide guidance and leadership in practical ways. You must provide access to Spirituality. You must be a strong force in the community, and you must become a safe-haven for problematic people. Instead of turning people away, people should be able to come to you and find the help they need. Words of Encouragement to Parents: ―Be tenacious, strong willed, positive minded, and spiritual – and you can, and will make it.‖ You will have challenges. Let the challenges be the opportunities to do something greater, rather than giving up and throwing in the towel. If you put the four things together (see above), it will give you the added resources needed to deal with your children.‖ “Don’t be a quitter – be a winner!” Author Jo Lena Johnson is a Trainer, Speaker, and the Managing Partner of Absolute Good Training & Life Skills Management. How to Ace Your Skype Interview
78
Unity • Pride • Progress
FEBRUARY 2011
Technology certainly brings with it many business advantages and efficiencies. But with all the benefits come some challenges – especially when these new systems have to still be processed by human sensitivities. A Skype interview is one example. Many more companies, particularly international firms, are using Skype as a way to reduce the costs of flying candidates in for interviews. For the candidate, it‘s easier to manage the details of preparation if they don‘t include travel. What‘s not as easy to manage is how you engage interviewers, which tend in this format to take place in the form of panels. In person, you get to shake hands, offer eye contact and develop a real rapport. On Skype you become an image on the screen. How do you make your best showing? Choose your best look Really consider what looks good on you. What colors help your complexion pop? What clothes fit you well? Make sure hair is properly groomed and for women, even if you tend not to wear makeup, get recommendations from a department store makeup counter on colors that will read well on camera. For men wearing suits, make sure the collars don‘t gap. Pay particular attention to ties and pocket squares as they can enhance or mute your look. Mind your setting Make sure your interview is conducted in an environment free from distractions, including children, pets and room clutter. If possible rent an office for your interview. Position yourself squarely in front of the camera not expanding beyond a waist-tohead shot. You want the interviewers to focus on you and not what‘s in the room. www.blackenterprise.com 79

Can Emanuel avoid runoff election?
80
Unity • Pride • Progress
FEBRUARY 2011
(CNN) - With 11 days to go until Chicago's mayoral election, a new poll indicates that front-runner Rahm Emanuel is closing in on the crucial 50 percent threshold, which would prevent the need for a runoff in April. According to a Chicago Tribune/WGN survey, 49 percent of the city's voters back the former White House chief of staff for mayor, with former Chicago Board of Education president Gery Chico at 19 percent, former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun at 10 percent, City Clerk Miguel del Valle at eight percent and 12 percent undecided. If Emanuel wins more than 50 percent of the vote in the February 22 contest, there will be no need for a runoff election in April between the top two finishers. Early voting has been underway since January 31. Emanuel's support is up five points from a Chicago Tribune/WGN survey conducted late last month, with Chico edging up three points and Braun plunging 11 points. Braun, who had been considered the "consensus candidate" of Chicago's AfricanAmerican community, appears to have dropped in the polls after a much talked about flap in which she suggested that community activist Patricia Van Pelt-Watkins, who is also black and who is also running for mayor, had been "strung out on crack." While Van Pelt-Watkins acknowledged past illegal drug use, she denies ever using crack. Braun apologized two days later but the poll suggests the incident damaged her in the eyes of some voters. According to the survey, Braun's support among black voters dropped from 39 percent last month to 20 percent now. The poll indicates that Emanuel has the backing of 48 percent of Chicago's black voters and 55 percent of the city's white voters. According to the survey, Chico has the backing of 38 percent of the Hispanic voters with Emanuel four points back. The winner will succeed longtime Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, who announced in September that he would not seek a seventh term in office. Emanuel, who had been serving as chief of staff to President Barack Obama, stepped down from that position in October and returned home to Chicago to run for mayor. The Chicago Tribune/WGN poll was conducted February 5-9, with 718 likely registered voters questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus 3.7 percentage points. – Follow Paul Steinhauser on Twitter: @PsteinhauserCNN

Recy Taylor: A Symbol of Jim Crow's Forgotten Horror By Cynthia Gordy
After her brutal gang rape, Recy Taylor became a global symbol of American injustice and helped inspire the civil rights movement. So why has nobody heard of her today?

FEBRUARY 2011
Sept. 3, 1944: It's a damp evening in the Alabama black belt, nearly midnight, but services at Rock Hill Holiness Church in the small town of Abbeville have just let out. Recy Taylor, a 24-year-old sharecropper, sets out along the town's fertile peanut plantations, accompanied for the walk home by two other worshippers from the African-American congregation. Moments later, a green Chevrolet rolls by -- and their routine journey takes a horrifying turn. Wielding knives and guns, seven white men get out of the car, according to Taylor and witnesses from a state investigation of the case. One shoves Taylor in the backseat; the rest squeeze in after her and ride off. Her panicked friends run to tell the sheriff. After parking in a deserted grove of pecan trees, the men order the young wife and mother out at gunpoint, shouting at her to undress. Six of them rape Taylor that night. Once finished, they drive her back to the road, ordering her out again before roaring off into the darkness. Days after the brutal attack, Taylor's story traveled through word of mouth, catching the attention of a Montgomery NAACP activist named Rosa Parks. A seasoned anti-rape crusader, who focused on the sexual assaults of black women that were commonplace in the segregated South, Parks would eventually help bring the case international notice. Despite her efforts, however, in Jim Crow-era Alabama, Taylor's assailants were never punished. It's curious, to say the least, that Taylor's name is not mentioned in history books. While most analyses of circumstances that inspired the civil rights movement focus on black men -being lynched or railroaded into jail, or facing down segregationists -- the stories of countless black women like Recy Taylor, who were raped by white men during the same era, have gone understated, if not overlooked entirely. Nearly 70 years later, having such a brutal attack swept under the rug is still a source of pain for a surviving victim. "Wasn't nothing done about it," Taylor, now 91, told The Root in a phone interview from her Florida home. "The sheriff never even said he was sorry it happened. I think more people should know about it … but ain't nobody [in Abbeville] saying nothing." Organizing a National Movement At the time, others -- more than she ever knew -- did speak out in defense of Taylor. Her brother Robert Corbitt, now 74, was just 8 years old when his eldest sister was kidnapped, but he remembers that night well, and all that followed. He recalls crying on the porch of their childhood home as their father, Benny Corbitt, went out looking for her. "He came back by the house about three times, and each time, his shirt was wringing with sweat," he told The Root. "Nobody slept that night."

Two days later, he remembers, someone threw a firebomb at the home of Taylor, her husband and their 3-year-old daughter. "After that, they moved in with us," said Corbitt. "At night, my father would sit in a tree and guard the house with a shotgun." The following month, in a farce of a grand jury trial at which none of the assailants even showed up, an all-white, all-male jury elected not to indict. The family didn't know it back then, but Parks, dispatched by the Montgomery NAACP to investigate the case, was setting the gears in motion for a far-reaching campaign. "Miss Parks told me to go with her to Montgomery until things were clear," said Taylor, who stayed for three months in a rooming house, arranged for by Parks, before returning home. "She was trying to get something done. I'm not sure what. I was young and didn't know nothing about law and stuff like that." Parks saw an opportunity to hold up Taylor's story as a national example of Southern injustice. She partnered with other progressive groups -- including the now mostly forgotten Southern Negro Youth Congress, the defense team of the Scottsboro Boys, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and other labor organizers, as well as communist networks -- to form the Alabama Committee for Equal Justice for Mrs. Recy Taylor. The coalition became a national movement that the Chicago Defender called "the strongest campaign for equal justice to be seen in a decade," and daily stories on the case were printed in newspapers across the nation, from Baltimore to Los Angeles. But not in the tiny town of Abbeville, where Taylor's family was largely unaware of the proceedings. Corbitt had quite a shock, years later, as a soldier stationed in Germany. "A German guy asked me where I was from, and when I told him Alabama, he started to tell a story he knew about that happened there," he said. "He was talking about my sister." Danielle McGuire, an assistant professor of history at Wayne State University and author of the recently published book At the Dark End of the Street, documenting Taylor's story as well as others from the civil rights era, says that the broader goal of the Committee for Equal Justice was to quash the legacy of Jim Crow. "They used the horror of her story to highlight the hypocrisy of the United States -- at war around the world for democracy, and yet there was no democracy at home," McGuire told The Root. "They might have not seen Recy Taylor as sophisticated enough to be a spokesperson for the campaign, so a lot of this was organized without the family's knowledge." The effort included a massive letter-writing campaign to Alabama Gov. Chauncey Sparks in order to shame the state into bringing Taylor's abductors to trial. Worried about the impact on Alabama's reputation, Sparks arranged an 84

investigation and even got admission statements from the assailants. "He and the attorney general believed the guys were guilty, and they were ready to do something," explained McGuire. The only problem was that in Alabama law, a criminal case can't proceed without an indictment in the county where the crime happened. "They just were not going to indict their neighbors and sons in Abbeville," said McGuire. There was no further hearing. A Forgotten History As the years passed, talk of the incident faded out. Somewhere along the way, it seems that history also forgot Recy Taylor and black women like her, many of whom also testified about the crimes committed against them. Although some African-American historians, such as Darlene Clark Hine, have cited incidents of rape as catalysts for the Great Migration, it hasn't been part of the civil rights story in the major historical world. "I think that has to do with, on some level, historians having a narrow focus on what 'civil rights' means," said McGuire. "It has always meant voter registration and desegregation of public accommodations and schools, but in the 1940s in particular, the movement was really focused on human rights." Meanwhile, Taylor and her family did their best to forget and move on. Corbitt eventually settled in New York City, but during a visit home in 1999, he and his sister got to talking about the rape. "She started to cry," he said. "I didn't realize she was still hurting that bad. She tried to hold it inside all those years, but she talked freely to me. When I retired in 2001 and moved back to Abbeville, I decided to devote my time to trying to find some way to help her get justice." Corbitt spent days at the library, poring over microfilms of newspapers from the era. Nothing turned up but missing pages. The county courthouse had no record of the incident. He had nearly given up when, in 2008, he typed his sister's name into an online search engine. Up popped an essay by Danielle McGuire referencing the case. Finally: historical recognition that this had happened. "The article said the name of the man that held the gun on her and forced her to get in the car," Corbitt said. "Just exposing this man's name was a little measure of justice." After meeting McGuire and learning more about Abbeville's handling of his sister's assault, he redirected his anger from the rapists to the police. "All of the men admitted that they kidnapped and raped her, but the police covered for them and said they didn't do it," he said. "That was a hard pill to swallow." Corbitt doesn't think he's asking for much these days. "I'd like a public apology from the city of Abbeville and the state of Alabama," he said. "Most of the white people 85

here don't know anything about what happened, because the police kept it such a secret." It's unclear what legal options the family has today, but because Alabama has no statute of limitations on rape, McGuire posits that Taylor's case could potentially be reopened if the assailants are still alive. "There may be a possibility that they could sue the county or sheriff's department for obstruction of justice, given the cover-up," she said. "A creative attorney could certainly find a way." As for Taylor, she agrees with her brother that an apology is the least anyone could do. She also blames herself for some of the hush-hush nature of her story. "I should have talked more about it too myself," she said. "At the time, I didn't want nobody to think something like that happened to me. I thought folks were going to talk about me and say, 'You was raped.' I was ashamed of it, and I didn't know how to go about talking about it." She pauses, lost for a moment in her thoughts. "It was a long time ago," she says finally. "But I still think something should have been done about it." Cynthia Gordy is the Washington reporter for The Root. Follow her on Twitter.

Egypt’s Mubarak resigns after 30 year rule

Cairo,
Egypt
(CNN)
--
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down Friday and handed over power to the military -- three decades of his iron-clad rule ended by an 18day revolution. In a somber one-minute announcement on state television, Vice President Omar Suleiman said Mubarak had resigned and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces will "run the affairs of the country." Tens of thousands of emotional Egyptians exploded in deafening cheers on the streets of Cairo, electric with excitement. It was a moment they had anticipated throughout long days of relentless demonstrations -- sometimes violent -- that demanded Mubarak's departure. It was also a moment that many had thought unimaginable in the Arab world's powerhouse nation. "Egypt is free!" and "God is Great," they chanted in the honeymoon of the moment. They waved Egyptian flags, honked horns and set off fireworks as they savored a moment that just days ago had seemed unimaginable. A source with close connections to Persian Gulf government leaders told CNN that Mubarak had fled to the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh. The Swiss government has directed banks to freeze all assets belonging to Mubarak and his family, said Norbert Baerlocher, a spokesman for the Swiss Embassy in Washington. The banks do not as yet have a clear picture of what Mubarak has but protesters on the streets had worried that he would attempt to flee the country with looted money.

In a televised speech Thursday night, Mubarak had indicated he was delegating authority to Suleiman, but Friday, deeply disappointed crowds calling for his ouster kept swelling throughout Cairo and in other major cities. Friday night, they got what they wanted all along. Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei, however, sounded words of caution amid the euphoria. He urged Egyptians to stay united beyond the moment of euphoria.

"We have challenges ahead of us," said the Nobel laureate whom many believe could emerge as Egypt's next leader. "I think we need to not worry about retribution. Mubarak needs to go and we need to look forward." Wael Ghonim, the Egyptian activist who became a reluctant hero of the revolution said only one word would be used to describe Mubarak in history books: "Dictator." "I want to say: 'Welcome back Egypt," he told CNN. Ghonim -- a Google executive who is on leave from his job and whose Facebook page is credited with triggering the popular uprising -- was seized by security forces and released Monday. His words and tears in a television interview galvanized the protesters in Tahrir Square.

'Mooz-lum': New film tries to bridge gap between faith and fear By Javier E. David
'Mooz-Lum' movie poster image
94
Unity • Pride • Progress
FEBRUARY 2011 Mooz-Lum is an independent film that debuted late last year to standing-room-only audiences and well-earned praise at last year's Urbanworld Film Festival. Making its wide-release debut today after an aggressive grassroots push to elevate its profile sufficiently to get it into theaters, this thoughtful picture arrives at an auspicious time. Culture-watchers are embroiled in a vigorous debate about an apparent dearth of quality roles for black actors, which a few weeks ago resulted in a shutout of Oscar nominations. At the same time, instances of Islamic extremism continue to occupy headlines worldwide, even as the memories of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks still percolate in the minds of many nearly ten years later. Part coming-of-age drama, part religious exegesis, Mooz-lum strives to be the latest cinematic effort to spark cross-cultural dialogue. In fact, the title is a deliberate mispronunciation of the Muslim, meant to evoke the idea of misunderstanding. At a January screening in New York City, Novice filmmaker Qasim "Q" Basir describes the film as semi-autobiographical, and an attempt to cultivate a better mainstream understanding of the Islamic faith. "When terrorist acts happen, Muslims are affected to. Not only are Muslims affected by the violence of terrorists, but [they are] being associated with terrorists," Basir told a room of viewers. "This is not for the Tyler Perry audience," he joked. And in many ways, he's absolutely correct. All of which means that Mooz-lum, despite its earnestness and gripping performances, walks something of a tightrope between moralizing and well-meaning, yet ultimately insufficient, attempts to educate. The movie has at its core a compelling though flawed premise, even as it gingerly sidesteps the director's central objective: trying to distinguish the beliefs of peace-loving Muslims from the radical interpretation of Islam that birthed the September 11 plots, and continues to fuel extremism worldwide. Evan Ross anchors the movie with a brilliant and often mesmerizing performance as Tariq Mahdi, a college-bound African-American who finds himself torn between a devout and disciplinarian Muslim father Hassan (played by the criminally underrated Roger Guenveur Smith), and his doting yet fiercely independent mother (portrayed by Nia Long, another woefully underestimated actor). In a series of jarring flashbacks and flash-forwards, viewers learn that Tariq's seminal religious experience was being enrolled briefly in an Islamic religious school as a young boy, where a series of traumatic events cause him to reject his strict religious upbringing. Once he enrolls in college, Tariq battles against an encroaching sense of alienation from his peers, distancing himself from his religion and many of those around him. The cast is rounded out by a comparatively brief appearance by Danny Glover, who hovers over the movie malevolently as the college's antagonistic dean. While Tariq clearly doesn't identify with the strictures of Islam, at various points during the movie he demonstrates a deft understanding of the Qu'ran and speaking Arabic. His religious upbringing leads to some awkward interactions and make adjusting to college life difficult for him. Still, Tariq manages to keep his religion and his observant Muslim roommate at arms length, even as culture wars continually erupt around him. 95
Unity • Pride • Progress
FEBRUARY 2011 The traumatic event of Sept. 11 becomes a plot device that propels the narrative into hyperdrive, and it is at this point where Mooz-lum's flaws become most glaring. The immediate aftermath of the attack leads to mass confusion, fear and bigotry on campus, as non-Muslim students inevitably clash with their Islam-following peers. Given the horrifying events of that fateful day, some degree of fear and loathing was an understandable, if irrational, response to the crisis. But as terror sweeps the campus and Tariq's friends are caught in the middle, the movie misses an opportunity to discuss how ordinary Muslims differ from those who are inspired by violent extremism. Rather than fostering understanding, non-Muslims are depicted in semi-caricature fashion as xenophobic, marauding bigots. Motivated by vengeance, they blindly lash out at anyone who isn't like them. Granted, Mooz-lum is an independent movie with a limited budget, and one that the director forthrightly states was a vehicle for his own personal self-examination. But Mooz-lum's core values seem to be redemption and understanding, its unstated promise to clarify the distinctions between ordinary and radical Muslims ultimately evaporates. Whether by design or accident, the movie actually does more to highlight many of the cultural and relationship conflicts adherence to Islam can provoke. Tariq's parents, who have differing interpretations of what it means to be a good Muslim, are ultimately torn apart by a religion to which they both adhere. The movie only mentions in passing the reasons why, and almost never delves deeply into the reasons why conflict and tension seems to pulsate when the movie's Muslims interact with non-Muslims -- and even when they deal with other Muslims. In 2006, HBO debuted Big Love, a drama about a fundamentalist Mormon with three wives, to much media fanfare. As someone who was curious about the Mormon faith and mainstream references to its belief in polygamy, I tuned in hoping to be enlightened by Mormonism. After watching the first few episodes -- which were bogged down with interpersonal dynamics and politics and hierarchy between the wives -- I quickly lost interest. It struck me that Mooz-lum, though thought-provoking and gripping in its own way, was weighted by a similar fundamental problem that prevented me from enjoying Big Love: too much emphasis on the dramatic, coupled with underwhelming exposition. Movies about religion are invariably fraught with controversy, but they should make you think. While it is worth seeing for the dramatic performances alone, Mooz-lum falls short in its effort to promote religious understanding. Unfortunately, the movie doesn't break new ground in illuminating the pressing question of why ordinary Muslims, who are ostensibly eager to avoid being lumped in with extremists, often remain reticent in the face of Islamic-inspired violence.

Butt implant death begs question: Do big bottoms lead to the top? By Lori Adelman

FEBRUARY 2011
"So should I be a glamour model?" 20-year-old 'CarmellaLondon' a.k.a. Claudia Aderotimi, self-described model, actress, singer, and dancer, tweeted to her hundred-or-so followers last month. "I wanna be famous." The young woman's words take on an eerie new meaning this week as details surrounding her sudden death emerge. Reports show that she died as the result of a botched attempt at surgically enlarging her buttocks. Although there are legal ways to undergo this type of procedure, they can be prohibitively costly and lengthy. So Claudia traveled from London to Philadelphia to undergo an illegal clandestine operation. It cost her $2,000, and her life. In the wake of this tragedy, public reaction has centered on the senselessness of Claudia's death. Her actions seem drastic and unnecessary to many who consider cosmetic surgery to be a kind of extravagant and fundamentally superficial endeavor. These folks have been tempted to ask incredulously: "why would a young woman risk her life just to make her butt look bigger, of all things?" Aderotimi's death is certainly tragic. But it didn't take place in a vacuum. Rather than representing an isolated instance of extraordinary tragedy, her death is better classified as a cultural casualty, the direct and largely imminent result of life in a world that appraises beauty by level of difficulty: the more unattainable, the more valuable. Unrealistic standards of beauty have been shown and perpetuated for so long that today they have become the norm. Many of us no longer consciously notice or object when these standards are presented and perpetuated through us. Fashion models who've had their rib-cages photoshopped out to look gaunt and rail thin? We've come to expect it. Bodacious video vixens with measurements that seem impossible to achieve? Just another day in the life of a media consumer. While it's easy and perhaps tempting to snicker at the lengths to which famehungry young women will go to see their dreams realized, less laughable are the multi-million dollar media empires that have been built by women like Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, Lil' Kim and Coco, all of whom boast ripe "assets" -- on their backs and in the bank. And there's nothing funny about that money to their millions of fans, including many teens and young women, who look up to these women and wish to emulate their career path. Their celebrity influence is far-reaching and deep-seeded. So it's not surprise that Claudia is not the first to die as a result of this procedure. 98

Why Allen West gives black Republicans a bad name By David A. Love

FEBRUARY 2011
There's something going on with the conservative movement, and it doesn't look good. Just days before the annual CPAC conference, its organizer, David Keene, stepped down as chairman of the American Conservative Union, a post he had held since 1984. Perhaps this reveals a schism in the conservative movement, between the old-school, libertarian, keep-government-out-of-my-way crowd and the authoritarian, put-government-into-your-bedroom types. Sarah Palin turned down CPAC's offer to deliver their keynote address at the last minute, though her political action committee is sponsoring a reception there. And others such as Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) wont attend due to the inclusion of gay groups. At the eleventh hour, CPAC has a keynote speaker, and it is Rep. Allen West (RFlorida), the newly-elected black Tea Party member of Congress from Floridas 22nd Congressional district. The selection speaks volumes about where the conservative movement and the GOP have gone off the deep end, that is. Some would call West crazy, perhaps even nuttier than your mamas pecan pie. And that's not merely because he proudly sports a high-top fade in the second decade of the twenty-first century. One of Sarah Palin's pick for Congress, Rep. West is a member of the Tea Party Caucus, which is chaired by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minnesota). Bachmann, known for her outlandish, over-the-top statements, has accused President Obama of being "very anti-American", and of setting up politically correct re-education camps for young people. In an odd pairing of affiliations, the Florida lawmaker is also the first black Republican to join the Congressional Black Caucus since 1996. An Iraq war veteran with 21 years of military service and a Bronze Star, West was forced to retire with full benefits and a $5,000 fine in 2004 for reportedly beating and torturing Kadoori Hamoodi, an Iraqi policeman suspected of helping the insurgency. In August 2003, West simulated an execution by firing his pistol near Hamoodi's head, an act which critics point to as evidence of a war crime. Hamoodi was never charged. Meanwhile, West became a hero to those who believed that abuse charges at the Abu Ghraib prison where U.S. military were charged and imprisoned for torturing and murdering Iraqi prisoners were overblown. West has come under fire for his choice of chief of staff. Originally, the congressman chose Florida firebrand radio host Joyce Kaufman for the spot. Kaufman had advocated for the "hanging" of illegal immigrants, and said that if ballots don't work, bullets will. Subsequently, West replaced Kaufman, blaming the media's supposed sexism, racism and liberal bias for the criticism against his pick. Black Republicans often seem to test the limits of how far they can go against the interests of the black community to curry favor with white conservatives. In that 100

regard, the Florida lawmaker never disappoints. Wests rising star is due to his willingness to sink lower than few mainstream Republicans will dare to go. Perhaps more than anyone else, African-Americans understand the painful reality of racial discrimination and intolerance in this country. Yet Rep. West has helped stoke the fires of Islamophobia in this country by making statements that denigrate Arab- and Muslim-Americans, question their patriotism and brand them as terrorists. He attacked his own colleague Rep. Keith Ellison, only one of two Muslims currently serving, as someone that represents "the antithesis of the principles upon which this country was established." West also once compared Obama to Hitler and called the president probably the "dumbest person walking around in America right now". And last month on MSNBC, Rep. West told Last Word host Lawrence O'Donnell that Obama should put his life in harm's way to show he is a true leader. "I'm sticking with my guns," West told O'Donnell. "I'm not going to retract that statement, because I will tell you this if I was sitting at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, I would fly into a combat theater and I would get out there and visit those troops wherever they are. That's just the type of leader that I am," he added. For a black lawmaker to suggest that Americas first black president should risk being shot, given the assassination plots and death threats against him, is reprehensible. But West not only shames black people when he utters such offensive statements. He also tarnishes the proud and honorable legacy of black Republicans. The last black Republican to serve in Congress from the state of Florida was Rep. Josiah Thomas Walls, who served between 1871 and 1876. Born a slave, Walls was forced to serve in the Confederate Army, was captured by the Union Army, and then volunteered for the Colored Troops Infantry Regiment, rising to the rank of First Sergeant. Walls was Florida's first elected African-American member of Congress. His election was challenged by a veteran Confederate general and former slave owner and he was unseated three times. In the House of Representatives he fought to strengthen the Civil Rights Act of 1866. He introduced a bill to establish a national education fund financed by public land sales, and sought funding to establish a state land-grant agricultural college. This was the Republican Party of Frederick Douglass, the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, the Freedmen's Bureau, and over 1,500 black elected officials during Reconstruction. But today's GOP is the party of the Tea Party movement, with a renewed Southern Strategy that includes promises of repealing the Fourteenth Amendment. They would like to return the country to the good old days that actually never existed for African-Americans. And, sadly, Allen West is their enthusiastic spokesperson. 101

Black Marshal Write New Chapter in Marshal Service History

Prior to his appointment in 1994 as U S. Marshal for the central District of Illinois Robert Moore read the official history book of the Marshals Service entitled “The Lawman: United States Marshals and their Deputies (1789-1998) to learn about the history of other black marshals appointments. To his surprise he located the picture of Frederick Douglass in the book with a caption naming him the first black marshal appointed in the nation. Marshal Douglass was appointed by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1877. To his dismay he discovered the following few lines devoted to the entire 132 year history and accomplishment of Black Marshals in the history book: “As a sop to the few remaining Radical Republicans remaining in the congress, Hayes appointed the famed black abolitionist and black activist Frederick Douglass as U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia.” This discovery led to Marshal Moore to write several articles on the history of black Marshals in 1995 after his appointment. Later, in 1999 he developed a traveling exhibit to honor and help educate the nation about the History of Black Presidential appointed Marshals. In 2009 Senator Ted Kennedy inquired of the Secretary of the United States Senate, and the Marshals Service if an African American had ever been appointed Marshal from his state. Unable to find this information in the Marshal Service History Book, or other official sources, the Secretary searched the internet and found Marshal Moore‘s website www.blackpoliceresouece.com with the requested information. The Secretary of the United States Senate, contacted Marshal Moore to verify the information before Senator Kennedy‘s office released the information about his choice for Marshal in his state. Mr. Moore was honored to receive the inquiry and it also told him that the Marshal Service had not updated their history records since his inquiry in 1993. After this call from the Secretary of the Senate, Marshal Moore fully recognized the need for this History book. 103

From the spirit of an artist, it all blended to become, the Creative Truth. It's all about my freedom of expression, finding the meaning of life‘s truths and understanding my growth within those revelations. It is the essence of my work, myself as a woman and my pieces bring to life, my eternal love affair with art. Below is an interview from Woman of Color Magazine (www.womanofcolor.com) When I came across Philece's work, I knew I had to interview her for the site. Read on to find out more about her. *Describe your art work in your own words* I paint what I feel so my artwork comes straight from the heart. It’s soulful, vivid, sexy and many times emotional, sometimes subtle always truthful. Tell me a bit about your background: Where are you from? What was it like growing up there? I’m from Nassau, Bahamas….born and raised and I’m an island girl through and through. I am blessed to have had a wonderful childhood and the love of a large close-knit family. Much of which has everything to do with who I am today. I was a major tomboy, somewhat of a closet geek, the child who loved sitting with my grandmothers absorbing and appreciating the tales and wisdom of those before me. Not much has changed I’m still that eager little girl, just all grown up now and a little further away from home. 105

What are the main themes/ ideas behind your work? The journey and emotions of women, good times, bad times …each one tells a story though I may not always share. Even in my more abstract pieces it’s about a feeling all derived from a particular moment or a series of experiences or stories I have lived or been told. Do you seek to convey a particular message with each piece? Is that a part of your creative process? My creative process is quite simple. I let it flow. I don’t set out to convey a particular message with each piece unless it’s for themed show. Being socially conscious, sometimes the message just creates itself. If a cause touches me I create accordingly. 107

FEBRUARY 2011
With the music industry constantly changing, new talent is always emerging. The style of Patrick "lil pat" Sullivan, has no label. He has been blessed with the ability to sing, write, rap and produce. He is also proud to do energetic and moving music with non-explicit lyrics. Who is lil pat? Many have asked, yet none have been able to fully answer. His life has been filled with many trials and tribulations. At the young age of 9, his older brother died of chronic myeloid leukemia. Patrik took on the responsibility of "man of the house" and watched over his mother and young sister. Koomlaude, who was his inspiration to pursue music, came about when his cousin, showed him how to use a microphone and a computer to develop a studio of his own. lil pat was 13, yet his vocabulary was far more advanced and his dulcet vibe, was slowly getting refined. At the age of 15, lil pat relocated from Arlington, Texas to Rio Rancho, New Mexico with his mother and sister. It was there, that he solely produced and released his first mixtape entitled, "Definition of Throwed". After responding to a search for local artist by Crank It Up Productions, lil pat produced his first single entitled, "Grown Man". The song was placed on a compilation mixtape, co produced by the company. At the age of 16, lil pat entered into a one album contract with Crank It Up, and his debut album "Breath of Fresh Air" was released in 2009. lil pat produced 16 out of 19 tracks on the project, after only producing for 15 months. 113

He also, performed at a half-time show for the New Mexico Thunderbird Basketball Team in 2009, with pop singer Kymberlee Ann Lopez. He was diagnosed in July 2009 with chronic myeloid leukemia, as his brother before him and will remain on life long medication. He does not let his illness deter him from his dreams of becoming an all around artist. God has blessed this young warrior and he appreciates any and all opportunities given. REAL ESTATE 101 By Nell Clay I am so excited about sharing the information I have learned about the real estate business. Prior to becoming a realtor, I taught business courses in School District 186 high schools and adult education programs. After leaving the school district, I worked for two different state agencies as their Director of Civil Rights. Even though my husband and I had purchased two homes during that time, I have learned sooooo much about the real estate industry. In this article, I will concentrate on the duties of a realtor as a buyer‘s agent, seller‘s agent, or dual agent. WHAT DOES A REALTOR DO BESIDES SHOW PROPERTY? This is a question I have gotten through my seven (7) years of working as a realtor. Prior to becoming a realtor, I had no idea of the amount of work that went into finding the perfect home for someone nor the obstacles to selling a home. In order to become a realtor, you must take a real estate class, pass it then take the state test for your license. Between the class, study materials and the state test, it takes about $1,500 to become a realtor. You must renew your license every two years by taking 12 hours of classes and paying a fee. Once you pass your state test, the real learning begins. A realtor can serve as a buyer‘s agent, seller‘s agent or a dual agent. Below are the responsibilities for each type of agent. Buyer’s Agent Represents the buyer in the real estate transaction. Guides the buyer through the process of getting pre-approved for the loan. Researches the Internet for properties that fit within the buyer‘s criteria and loan amount approved by the financial institution. Selects property within criteria provided by the buyer and financial Institution. Schedules all showings and accompany buyer to showings. 124

Complete the contract and all other appropriate documents to make an offer. Negotiate all the details of the offer. Finalize the contract offer. Guide buyer through the inspection process. Negotiate all repairs that are deemed major systems. Schedule the closing. Explains the closing cost and closing procedures Attend the closing with your excited client. Follow-up with your client. Seller’s Agent Evaluate property prior to putting it on the market to determine value. Determine what, if anything, needs to be done prior to showing the property. Conduct a market analysis to set a competitive price. Complete all necessary paperwork to list the property. Take external and internal pictures of the property. Make sure the listing is put on all available Internet sites. Market the property Internet Promotions Heartland Homes Magazine State Journal Register‘s Home Magazine Emails Mailings Open House To other realtors At staff meetings Other events I attend Negotiate the terms of an offer. Negotiate the terms of repairs if appropriate. Finalizes details of the offer. Schedule the closing. Explain closing costs and procedures. Attend the closing with a happy client, Dual Agent A dual agency is an agent that sells his or her own listing. A dual agent must do the following: 125

Keep confidential information confidential for both clients. Legally required to have the buyer and seller sign a form agreeing to dual agency. Cannot divulge the seller‘s bottom price to the buyer. Cannot divulge the price the buyer is willing to pay to the seller. Cannot tell the buyer how much to offer. Cannot tell the seller how much to accept. Treat all clients honestly Provide all information about the property to the buyer. Disclose all latent material defects in the property that are know to the agent to the buyer.
Ministerial Acts A realtor may perform what we call ministerial acts. This is when a realtor is legally allowed to perform certain acts for a consumer even though they are not the consumer‘s real estate agent. This may include some clerical functions. As an example, an agent may present a rental contract for a consumer to a potential renter. Next Issue In the next issue, as space permits, I will discuss the various types of loans and the stipulations attached to each – including IHDA Smart Move Mortgage program, Credit Score, the 3 Credit Reporting Agencies and the importance of a good credit score. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions about this article or the process of buying or selling a home. Nell l Clay REALTOR, Charles Robbins REALTOR, 2144 S. Expressions of Love & Passion By Destinee Love
A Valentines for You Valentine‘s Day. The day we women look forward to each year, and the day men wished never existed. As I contemplated on writing an article pertaining to how a man could surprise his significant other with great gift ideas, restaurants, etc., I thought to myself as a woman ―What would I really want?‖ Sure in the beginning it was lovely receiving flowers, chocolate candies, or gifts. But with each passing year the perishable and monetary items exited as fast as they entered. It became a game of guessing if it was a different color card or chocolate shaped box. And once the day passed, so did the memory of that SAME 14th day of February, of THAT same particular year. As I got wiser, (not older) I realized that just because it‘s Valentine‘s Day doesn‘t mean it has to be materialistic because we live in a materialized world. Yes it is nice to go out or receive nice gifts but sometimes it‘s nice to have a little change in the line-up too! When it comes to us women, it‘s the little things that make a difference. Little gestures that demonstrate your affection assures us of your love. Here are a few things I thought of that someone could do to leave an lasting impression on me to express their love on this special day known as Valentine‘s. Flowers Have Power ~ Yes it doesn‘t take much to realize that flowers would melt any woman over. But if you choose this route please do not give me the same old red ordinary rose(s), Though roses are the epitome of love, orchids, tulips, or lilies are very classy choices and sometimes prettier. 142

FEBRUARY 2011
Find Me & Surprise Me ~ Small gifts do not require much. All they need is a special person to deliver it. If I am truly special to you, make sure to let me know. The gift doesn‘t have to be extravagant, matter if fact it could be handmade. After all, it‘s the thought that‘s cute….Even better if it was unexpected. Dare to Share? ~ It‘s not just about saying I love you just because it‘s Valentine‘s Day. It‘s about when and how often you say it..meaning the other 364 days out there that exist! Tell me when I least expect it, like when I‘m gulping down a giant bowl of ice cream. Better yet, call me when it‘s girls night out and see the big difference it makes when I get home. But don‘t over-do it, I don‘t want to feel suffocated lol. Wine & Dine (at Home!) ~ Sometimes it pays to stay in. How many times did you ever try to go out for Valentine‘s Day only to find yourself waiting. Waiting along with the 30 odd people ahead of you for a seat!! One thing, you can truly see how upset couples get when they are hungry. Sometimes dealing with the traffic and crowd is not worth giving up the one on one time needed, especially if it was a long day at work. Surprising me with dinner, wine, Netflix, and a shoulder on the couch does it for me! Double bonus if it‘s a love story you would only watch because it‘s one of my favorites. These was just a few of my thoughts. Of course, I could write more, but I wanted to exit with a little note. It‘s not all about what I want, because I would equally do the same for them. As the saying goes ‗What you give is what you get‘. Meaning If you show endless love and affection daily, in return you will receive more than you could imagine….Each day, not just on ONE day. Be Safe, and Happy Valentines to each and every one of you! “Expressions of Love, Passion, and Intimacy” is my first collection of my spoken words about love, passion, and affection. Love is in the air and Couples Massage is becoming more popular than ever! A couple's massage is not the same thing as sensual massage between a couple. Instead of massaging each, the two people receiving the couple's massage actually do receive their massage from a licensed massage therapist. A couple's massage can take place with two lovers, but it can also be offered to platonic couples and familial couples as well. Location While a couple's massage can be offered by any massage therapists, most people receive them at a spa. The couple's massage, in fact, is one of the fast growing areas in the spa industry. The massage can take place in a private room or in an outdoor setting. Function A couple's massage functions to bring two people together in a shared experience. Typically, two different massage therapists will be used to give the participants a massage at the same time, but it can also be accomplished with one massage therapist taking turns. Benefits One of the benefits of couple's massage is for a newbie to be introduced to the world of massage by someone familiar with it. It is also beneficial for those who may be uncomfortable with the nudity or near-nudity involved in the massage process. The couple's massage may also be useful for relieving the stress that can build up between two companions involved in any type of relationship. Amenities The more expensive couple's massage offer an experience that goes beyond mere massage. Wine may be served and manicures or pedicures may also be included in 150

the price. Additional amenities can potentially include steam showers, mud treatments and scenic outdoor views. Sensual Massage Some spas may offer sensual couple's massage options. Be aware that this may involved more nudity and far more erotic massage techniques. For those who are comfortable with these things, a sensual couple's massage can preface a highly charged romantic engagement afterward. It would be beneficial if the massage is performed by the couple rather than the therapist, if it is sensual. Massage for Couples Sensual massage is a great way for couples to connect and explore each other's bodies. It can be performed at home, and the session can last as long as you see fit. Licensed therapists are not permitted to provide sensual massage, so you will have to explore this titillating touch with an intimate partner. Massage Oils Massage oils let your hands glide over every surface of the body. After oil is applied, you'll be able to move your hands over your partner's flesh without breaking contact. There are many oils that are used in aromatherapy treatments, and these can be adapted to increase the sensuality of the massage session. Find a scented oil that you and your partner both enjoy.Bath & Body Works, has a wide variety of body oils. Set the Mood Sensual massage is not just about touch. The entire room should be set up to increase the romantic feel. Consider lighting candles and choose music that you and your partner both enjoy. If you're performing the massage on a bed, choose comfortable sheets and bedding. Chair Massage special offer! Happy Valentine‘s Day! Call and make an appointment today! Celeste Poole (217)280-1367. Between 2002 and 2007, the number of black-owned businesses in the United States increased by 61 percent to 1.9 million. It was a growth rate more than triple the 18 percent rate for all businesses. Black-owned firms also saw their receipts rise 55 percent to $137.5 billion during those years. It is a great snapshot provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, but there are shadows. Every five years, the Survey of Business Owners takes the entrepreneurial pulse of black-owned businesses. The hitch is that the data were collected in 2007, before the Great Recession hit millions of U.S. businesses, workers and consumers, and doesn't reflect reality for many of those groups today. Marc Morial, the president and CEO of the National Urban League, addressed that issue when speaking about the survey's release. He said that company building has been affected by the downturn, but that necessity has always driven black entrepreneurship. He added that the difficulty for most black would-be entrepreneurs is gaining access to capital and connections. There are also disparities between black and nonblack businesses when it comes to average receipts and number of employees. The survey reports that only 12.7 percent of African-American companies have annual revenues of more than $50,000, and 68 percent have four or fewer employees. 153

Steady Growth for 20 Years The results of the 2007 survey are no anomaly, however. Since 1987 the number of black-owned businesses and the total revenue they receive has been soaring. To paraphrase Esther Phillips, who sang about positive changes, what a difference 20 years makes. In 1987 there were 424,165 black-owned businesses that took in revenue of $19.8 billion, according to the Census Bureau. During the next 20 years, the number of black businesses grew 353 percent to 1,921,881, and their revenue soared 594 percent from $19.8 billion to $137.5 billion. Changes in black business over those two decades are not just reflected at the mass level. In 1987 America's first black corporate billionaire, the late Reginald F. Lewis, stood atop the Black Enterprise 100 Industrial/Service list. That year his TLC Beatrice International Holdings, an international food company, had revenue of $1.8 billion. It was the only black billion-dollar company on that list. The next-largest company was Chicago's Johnson Publishing, with revenue of $202 million. The remaining top 10 were hair care companies, a soft drink bottler, a construction company, fabled Motown, a transportation firm and two computer-systemsintegration companies. The smallest firm on that year's BE 100 list was a custodial company that brought in $3.1 million. Currently, the largest U.S. blackowned firm is World Wide Technology. Its $3.2 billion in revenue should keep the Maryland Heights, Mo., technology-products and consulting-services giant atop the BE 100 when the magazine unveils the list this June. Ironically, the No. 22 company on last year's BE 100, with $200 million in revenue, was Johnson Publishing, publishers of Ebony and Jet. In 2011 the sectors in which the 10 largest black-owned companies operate reflect changes in how African Americans do business. The firms are led or were founded by men and women with a deep knowledge of their industries, but also by those with an MBA, holders of other advanced degrees and corporate executives with an itch to run their own businesses. Their ranks include an international oil business, two tier-one suppliers of automotive parts, two staffing-human resources companies, a national passenger-transportation company, a diverse conglomerate, a holding company owned by a serial entrepreneur, a food company run by a former NBA player and the nation's only black-owned casino company. His company reported revenue of $380 million in 2010. Despite the wounds caused by the recession, Harry C. Alford, president and CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, is optimistic. "The amount of new entrepreneurs with remarkable skill sets will overcome any losses incurred by business failure or downturn," he says. "Capitalism is catching on like wildfire in the African-American community." Frank McCoy writes about business and technology for The Root. 154

FEBRUARY 2011
BOSTON (AP) -- Ray Allen broke the NBA record for 3-pointers on Thursday night, sinking two in the first quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers as the man he passed, Reggie Miller, sat courtside working the TV broadcast. Allen hit his second 3 of the game with 1:48 left in the first quarter to reach 2,561 in his career -- a number that flashed on the scoreboard in green and white while the TD Garden erupted in applause. The 38-year-old Celtic celebrated little as he got back on defense, but at the next whistle went over to Miller for a hug and a handshake, then bumped fists with Lakers star Kobe Bryant. "I'm just so happy for him because this is one of the best guys," Miller said on the TNT broadcast. "He's so humble, he's so giving, he's a great family man and I'm excited. This is great. This is great for the game of basketball. You know why? We're focusing and talking about shooting." The record-breaker came on a transition basket from the right side on a pass from Rajon Rondo. The sold-out crowd at the TD Garden -- the visit by the rival Lakers would have been enough for that -- cheered, and his teammates rose out of their seats. After the quarter ended, Allen exchanged a few words and another hug with Miller, then went down the sideline to receive his family's congratulations. Allen made one more in the game to finish two ahead Miller, but the Boston Celtics lost the NBA finals rematch 92-86. "It's so serendipitous that it happened the way it happened. For us to be sitting here, Reggie's in the building and he's in the building able to work the game," Allen said before the game. "He just told me he was proud of me and he was excited for me. He said he was glad that he could be here in this moment." Miller has been cheering Allen on as he pursed the record, and the former Indiana Pacers star said people shouldn't be surprised. "All records are made to be broken," Miller said. "I had a conversation with Ray earlier tonight and he was like, 'When I was a rookie and I came to Market Square Arena and I saw you for 3 to 3½ hours before (the game) shooting, that's how I wanted to patent my game.'" A 6-foot-5 guard from Connecticut, Allen is the No. 25 scorer in NBA history, finishing the night with 21,875 points in a 15-year career with Milwaukee, Seattle and Boston. He is already the NBA's all-time leader in 3-pointers made per game since the shot was introduced to the league in 1979, with an average of 2.4. 158
