From Gus Bender, Illinois Youth Soccer President A t this time of year, I try to reflect on the services and programs that we offer and the changes taking place in Soccer.

In an effort to standardize the National Programs, US Youth Soccer has centralized its operations to the main office in Frisco, TX under the direction of their Chief Executive Officer Chris Moore. We thank the newly appointed US Youth Soccer Midwest Region General Manager Chris Duke for attending our recent Club Directors of Coaching Meeting. In recent years US Soccer has taken a more aggressive role in coaching education, referee education and player safety. As a charter member of US Soccer we are obligated to implement their mandates and we thank all of you for your facilitating these difficult transitions. The Federation is continuing to reconfigure the Coaching Licenses and will roll out the new courses in January. Until stated otherwise, the existing requirements are grandfathered in. Please help us welcome our Illinois Youth Soccer Director of Coaching/Technical Director Adam Howarth and Associate Director of Coaching/ODP Director Marek Radziszewski. Although they are new in their positions, both have been involved in our coaching education and ODP for years. They have been attending the US Soccer coaching workshops to learn and implement the latest coaching techniques and procedures to ensure that the coaching course participants meet the US Soccer pathway requirements and to improve the quality and accessibility of educational information. To meet the US Soccer coaching standard and qualify a coach on the pathway to the D license, Illinois Youth Soccer will be offering a Grassroots Pathway Course that include on-line and in-person courses that include team management and risk management. The In-Person Courses will take place over a weekend – similar to the previous E course. Additionally, we are in the process of developing and implementing a program for 3-5 year olds. Adam and Marek are also raising the standards for ODP training. The majority of sessions are taking place at the state of the art Rockford Indoor Sports Complex that gives players the space to train and display their talent to the best of their ability in a full field setting. Illinois ODP provides progressive trainings at a reasonable cost by high level US Soccer licensed coaches in the best facility that do not prohibit you from playing in High School. We are continuing to develop our competitive offerings such as State Cup, Presidents Cup, Illinois Cup, MRL, Beach Soccer, State Premiership and several new additions such as the Spring Soccer Festival, Junior State Cup and Futsal. These events give your Team and Club an opportunity to participate in a major competition. Thanks in large part to the US Soccer Foundation grant, we continue to provide FREE after school Soccer for Success (SFS) programs to at-risk children in Chicago. For the past 20 years, this program has impacted nearly 1000 children annually and involves the inner city girls for whom there are few sport-based team activities. From the players in our SFS elementary school programs in Chicago we were able to create five travel teams that play in IWSL and YSSL and special appreciation is extended to them for their support. Approximately 30 Illinois Youth Soccer Soccer for Success players from Calmeca Academy attended the US Soccer Foundation press conference with Mayor Emanuel, Foundation President & CEO Ed Foster-Simeon and major contributor Chief Executive of Citadel LLC Kenneth Griffin at Gage Park in Chicago on December 6 to announce a national soccer campaign to build 50 mini-pitches in the City of Chicago.

We continue to support the women’s game and to provide opportunities for the top players who came out of our programs by co-sponsoring with the IWSL the Chicago Red Stars Reserve team. We thank the Chicago Red Stars and the Chicago Fire for making dreams come true for our home-grown players. I mourn the loss of Julius Roth, one of the Founders of the IYSA and IWSL, and remember his phenomenal impact on soccer over his 50 plus years of involvement. Every year we recognize the players, coaches, referees and volunteers at our annual awards banquet who are a testament to and an integral part of Illinois Youth Soccer’s success. We will be working with United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA) to help host the 2019 USC Convention and US Youth Soccer Workshop in Chicago. We want to thank all of our leagues, both recreational and competitive, for making improvements that enhance the experience for the players. Our recreational leagues have adjusted to some of the changes requested by US Soccer and we hope that the innovations will help make the transition easier. The IWSL continues to be the leading girls’ league in Illinois and the YSSL is the largest boys’ league in Illinois. SLYSA-IL is the biggest league in Southern Illinois. Central Illinois Youth Soccer League continues to dominate the Central Counties and ILLOWA the Iowa border. The Illinois Youth Soccer and US Youth Soccer Midwest TOPSoccer Director Shawn Danhouser continues his outreach to provide soccer programs to children with special needs that culminates with the annual TOPSoccer Summerfest. In every message, I remind everyone about two important issues. The first is compassion for the referees, nearly 50% of whom are new this year. We are implementing a robust youth referee mentoring program to educate the beginning officials to deal with the constant challenges and stay in the game. Once again, we encourage the adults in the game to support the emerging referees, the majority of whom are our children, by giving them the opportunity to develop on the field and learn from their mistakes. Therefore I ask the clubs and teams to develop a Parent Code of Conduct and urge your coaches and parents to support the referees. The second item is risk management. Our foremost responsibility continues to be player safety. Over the years we have been in the forefront of Goal Safety, Background Checks and Concussion Awareness. Therefore the Illinois Youth Soccer Board of Directors has implemented the following policy effective for Fall 2018 to further protect the players. The Illinois Youth Soccer Association (IYSA) and its member organizations and their personnel are responsible for protecting participants and ensuring their safety and wellbeing during their sponsored activities. Every IYSA member organization shall adopt policies prohibiting sexual and physical abuse. Persons that have contact with athletes must successfully complete the US Olympic Committee SafeSport training at http://training.teamusa.org or the AbusePreventionSystems Sexual Abuse Awareness Training at https://abusepreventionsystems.com every two (2) years and submit a copy of their Certificate of Completion to their IYSA member organization. We appreciate your continued support and ask you to keep in mind that thoughtful changes can help us be a more viable and relevant organization. Thank you for your support and consideration Gus Bender

Meet The New Illinois Youth Soccer

Directors Of Coaching Adam Howarth Director Of Coaching A US Soccer 'A' licensed coach Adam Howarth comes to Illinois Youth Soccer with many years of experience as Coaching Education Instructor and Illinois & Region II ODP Coach. Adam served as the Men's and Women's Head Coach at Eastern Illinois University. He has a master's degree in Sports Administration and taught Kinesiology and Sports Studies at Eastern Illinois University. Adam started his soccer career as a semipro player with Burnham FC in England. He joined Illinois Youth Soccer from Green White Soccer Club, where he was the Director of Coaching. “My goals for Illinois Youth Soccer are simple: a.) To work hard to provide comprehensive coaching education for all levels of coaches and help them become better soccer educators; b.) Improve our players in Illinois through our ODP and recreation clinics and help expose them to new and different ideas on the game of soccer; c.) Be visible to all coaches and players in the state and be there to assist all in reaching their own personal goals,” Howarth said. “For me the best part about of coaching is seeing coaches and players reach their goals. It is great to see a former player become a professional or a younger player make a team! Or a coach getting his coaching license. As a coach we make many friends and work with many players. To play a small part in someone’s journey through soccer is the most rewarding!” Adam can be reached at doc@illinoisyouthsoccer.org and 847-290-1577 ext 104.

Marek Radziszewski Associate Director Of Coaching Radziszewski played professionally and participated at all levels of the player development academy at his native club in Poland, Legia Warszawa. He currently holds the United States Soccer Federation National ‘A’ license, NCSAA Goalkeeping License and has participated in international coaching internships at the professional level and youth academies. He has several years of experience with the Illinois Youth Soccer as an Olympic Development Program coach and Coaching Education Program instructor. Radziszewski is the Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Calumet College of St. Joseph and coached at Robert Morris University. “Having a positive impact on someone’s development and seeing them succeed in reaching their goals, even the smallest ones, is probably the most rewarding experience for any educator,” said Radziszewski. “Coaching Education for all of us here at Illinois Youth Soccer is on top of our priorities list. It follows a simple philosophy: Better Coaches = Better Environment = Better Players.” “Coaches should constantly challenge themselves and enhance their knowledge base in order to provide all players with the right tools, not only to improve their soccer techniques, but also mentoring them on life skills like realistic goal settings and such. Coaching Education has a direct impact on overall player experience and development.” Marek can be reached at 847-290-1577 ext 105 and marekr@illinoisyouthsoccer.org.

Coaching Education Update Adam Howarth, Illinois Youth Soccer Director Of Coaching

A

s we finish 2017 we look forward to an exciting 2018 with lots of new coaching courses. As part of my position with Illinois Youth Soccer I am lucky to attend workshops with US Soccer and stay updated with new happenings on the coaching end. The most recent workshop helped define the new Grassroots pathway and D License that will be set for January 31 2018. It also helped all of the instructors on their craft as a coaching educator. January 31 2018 the new Grassroots Licenses designed for coaches will be implemented. The first courses are tentatively scheduled for February. Courses in Central and Southern Illinois will follow that month. An online Introduction to Grassroots Coaching (20 mins) will be the first step of the courses followed by

modules 4v4, 7v7, 9v9 and 11v11. The courses will be offered both online and in person. Prospective Coaches can pick which courses pertain to their level of coaching. The E License will be no longer be offered. Due to the online portion not being ready at this time, the F License will still serve as the online portion of the courses until it is ready, potentially March/April. All courses are independent licenses and run for 4 Hours. To be eligible for the D License, a candidate must pass 2 In Person courses (1 Being the 11v11 course) and 1 online for a total of 3 courses. Details on our new Coaching requirements are below. The 4 Courses will follow a play-practice-play philosophy within each training session. Every coach who takes the courses will have access to a bucket of

training exercises available on the DCC (Digital Coaching Center). The new D License will also follow this philosophy. The D License will still be a two-weekend course with a developmental period. Candidates will be asked to prepare lesson plans in this course. This is the final Grassroots course in the pathway before the C-B-A courses. Recreation Clinics IYSA continues to serve its Recreation membership with clinics. We have done 12 clinics since August 5 where we have introduced information on the grassroots licenses and the Play-Practice-Play philosophy. They have been well received and follow up clinics have been discussed with members. All members are encouraged to contact Illinois Youth Soccer if they have an interest in any coaching clinics

Partnership Program IYSA is continuing to look to partner with programs. If you have an interest please contact Illinois Youth Soccer. IYSA would be looking at working with potential programs to help enhance the following: 1. Coaching Education – sharing of ideas with partner to potentially lead to a coaching education exchange and clinic and camp possibilities. 2. Player development – working with partner to help individual’s possibilities to train and work with new coaches. 3. Team Development – working with partner to have regional and select teams to participate in tournaments and games in other countries and states. Please direct any questions to Adam Howarth doc@illinoisyouthsoccer.org

Lyons Township SC & FC United Take Home Regional Titles The Midwest Regional Championships is the second leg of the most prestigious and notable championship in youth soccer, the US Youth Soccer National Championships Series. This past June, 22 teams from Illinois competed to earn the Midwest title and advance to the culmination of the soccer year, the US Youth Soccer National Championships. The following teams secured their trip to the Regional Championships either thru winning the Illinois State Cup or qualifying thru the Midwest Regional League. 13U Girls Libertyville FC 1974 13U Girls St. Louis Scott Gallagher 14U Girls CFJ South 15U Girls CFJ South 16U Girls Eclipse Select 16U Girls LFSA Select 17U Girls Campton United 17U Girls FC United 18U Girls Team Chicago 19/20U Girls FC United 13U Boys Addison United 14U Boys CFJ City 14U Boys Raiders 15U Boys Chicago Magic 16U Boys Galaxy 16U Boys Raiders 17U Boys Galaxy 17U Boys Raiders 18U Boys FC United 18U Boys LTSC Union Showcase 19/20U Boys FC United 19/20U Boys CFJ National League Two of these teams, Lyons Township SC and FC United earned Regional titles and a trip to Frisco to compete in the 2017 National Championships.

“It felt absolutely fantastic to win the Regional Title with this group,” Paul Murphy, LTSC coach said. “We had strived to reach this level for two years. We've have had a fair amount of success with qualifying for National league and being in three State Cup finals but this was the first time where everything came together and the boys were able to play at such a high level for a sustained period of time. The confidence and momentum just built from the first game and we never let up.” “Earning a regional title was icing on the cake for this already accomplished team,” said Baer Fischer, FC United Senior Boys Director. “As FC United's first three-time State Cup Champion, winning a Regional title was a fitting way for these FCU players to cap their youth careers prior to heading off to college. Coach Yianny's leadership with the team over the past three years helped take this group to new heights.” In a heart-stopping final, LTSC Union Showcase 99/00 defeated OP Green (OH-S) in kicks from the mark for an overall 2-1 win and the 18U Boys Region II crown. It was a close game as the first goal of the match did not come until the 66th minute when LTSC’s Jack Richards put the ball in the back of the net. OP responded well and equalized the match with the help of Noah Paoletti. Two overtime periods passed without a goal, so the two teams lined up for the shootout. “We were actually feeling good about (PK’s) as we had just won the Semifinal on Penalties the previous day,” said Murphy. “I had the order all worked out and we were confident in all our players to do well. We have very strong

kick takers who were able to keep mentally strong and keep their nerve and our Keeper is very good at stopping the P.K's. He stopped 2 the previous day and 4 in the final. It’s such a tough way to lose and one of the most exciting ways to win a game. Both teams played their hearts out, but we were able to just save a little more for the shootout and see it through.” LTSC goalkeeper Mathew Vear and OP goalkeeper Bryant Pratt both made crucial saves, but LTSC came out victorious after outshooting OP, 5-4. “Matt Vear was bigtime in the final shootout,” Murphy said. “He saved 4 penalties. We won on his save. He has a real knack of just reading the kickers actions and is able to make saves from both sides. He always seems to get one of the first three and then from their the nerves set in in the other team. He has not stopped smiling since.”

difference in the final,” said Fischer. “ Ben's first goal, early in the first half, was crucial as we knew the importance of getting an early lead against a very talented OP team. Ben started with FC United six years ago on one of our lower-level teams, and he's had many ups and downs over the years. Ben always persevered no matter the challenge in front of him, so watching him help lead his team to a Regional Championship after scoring two goals in the final was incredibly gratifying for both Yianny and me.” Noah Melick added a third goal in the 82nd minute to seal the victory.

Regional Finalists

FC United earned a 3-0 win over OP 97-98 Green (OH-S) to claim the Regional title. Ben Brandt opened up the scoring in the seventh minute of the match, and he scored again in the 22nd minute. “Ben's play was the

llinois was represented by 17 teams at the 2017 US Youth Soccer Midwest Presidents Cup in Overland Park, KS this past June. Three of those teams earned a Regional title and a trip to the US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup in July of 2017. FC United 2003 Predator (IL) took home the 14U girls crown after a 2-0 victory over Ohio Celtic Alliance 03 Black (OH-S). With a scoreless first half, FC United opened up the scoring in the 39th minute as Roxana Zieba finished a goal. Cecilia Troglia added a second goal six minutes later to secure the win. Stars had the upper hand early on as Ricardo Avila Jr. scored a goal in the fourth minute. Raptors’ equalizer came in the 51st minute when Zeus Huerta placed the ball in the net in the 51st minute. Rockford Raptors stole the lead in the 80th minute thanks to a goal from Aeneas Sala, which ended up being the game winner. In a battle between two Illinois teams, Illinois Fusion defeated Eclipse, 3-1, for the 17/18U girls Region II Presidents Cup title. TOPSoccer Goes BIG For Summerfest

S

ince 2014, Illinois Youth Soccer has hosted a Summerfest event that invites all of our TOPSoccer athletes from across the state to attend. This year's event was hosted by Park Ridge TOPSoccer and was held at Maine South High School. The event is an opportunity for our players and volunteers to "kick off" the start of the season for Fall. There are several fun soccer based skills stations and the big addition of our first inflatable slide which was a big hit with everyone! We had players, coaches and volunteers from many of our programs in attendance and the event gets bigger each year. It's an amazing event that everyone is welcome to join and a wonderful opportunity for players and coaches to network with each other and learn from each other. The theme for this years event was "TOPSoccer is Awesome" and had a Lego Movie style theme to our games and gifts. We are grateful for the continued support from organizations like the Chicago Fire, Chicago Red Stars, and IWSL who support us with promotional giveaways and appearances from their staff. One of the highlight's of the day was a small sided game with Sparky the Fire Dog. The kids loved it. We always end the event with a group photo, custom Summerfest medals, gift bags for the players and lunch for everyone. Illinois Youth Soccer Director of TOPSoccer Shawn Danhouser commented: "This years event was incredible! Coach Moni Ruterschmidt-Ryczek and her team from Park Ridge Soccer really knocked the ball out of the park. The Inflatable slide was super fun and in use the entire time of the event. The Athletic Department from Maine South High School couldn't have been more accommodating and really encourage volunteers from their soccer teams to help out. The weather was perfect and everything went off perfectly. It was great to see so many players and coaches from different programs working together to make the event a success. I just wish everyone could experience

the joy that we saw on all of our kids faces. It's hard work to put the event together but it is so worth it and the memories are priceless." Next year's Summerfest will be hosted by Chicago TOPSoccer and will be held at Addison Trail High School on August 4, 2018. We are always looking for new players, volunteers and programs. If you are interested in learning more about TOPSoccer, please contact Shawn Danhouser at sdanhouser@yahoo.com

In Memorium: Julius Roth

J

ulius Roth, one of the first organizers and founders of US Youth Soccer, passed away in April of 2017. A visionary, Roth was one of the first to recognize the value of youth and women's soccer programs and their impact on the future of soccer in the United States. When helping to start and expand US Youth Soccer, Roth identified and organized the US Youth Soccer State Associations throughout the Midwest and lobbied to have women's soccer recognized by the US Soccer Federation. Roth was a visionary and was ahead of his time by providing female teams the opportunity to play regulation, scheduled games. Through his efforts at this critical time, soccer gained its widespread, grassroots popularity. Born in Forberg, Czechoslovakia, Roth immigrated to the United States in 1951 where he began playing for Hansa Junior, one of eight German-American clubs in Chicago. Julius played for Hansa Junior until 1965, helping them win the US Junior Championship from 1953 to 1954. At the conclusion of his playing career, Roth continued his passion for the game by coaching the team he just retired from. Roth later went on to attend the first US Youth Soccer Annual General Meeting in Alaska in 1972 where he began his work with the organization where he was elected to the Illinois Soccer Association Board and become a beloved figure. In 1974, he became the first US Youth Soccer Region II Director on the Board of Directors, where he served until 1976. Starting in 1975, Julius had served as the President of the Sepp Herberger Committee. The committee has hosted hundreds of teams from Germany, including the Women’s and Men’s national teams and has raised $260,000 in funds to help youth teams of affiliated clubs. He was instrumental in proving the Sepp Herberger Scholarships to outstanding Illinois Youth Soccer's Soccer for Success players for the last 15 years. In 1975, Julius also began serving as the chairman of the James P. McGuire National Challenge Cup, a position he held for two years, which is currently part of the US Youth Soccer National Championships Series. Roth served as the Chairman of the Appeals Committee for US Youth Soccer Region II for the next two years and, in 1981, he served on the US Youth Soccer Region II Planning Committee. Through the 1980’s, Roth was active in the founding of the Illinois Women’s Soccer League (IWSL). To date, the IWSL is now 780 teams strong. Julius continued his dedication to the game as he had continued to serve as an advisor for the IWSL as well as on many of their committees. In 1990, Roth was recognized for his efforts to expand and improve soccer and was inducted into the Illinois State Soccer Hall of Fame. He served as Illinois State Soccer Association's historian from 1997 to 2001 and as the Chairman of their Hall of Fame Committee. Most notably, Julius received a Meritorious Service Award from the Illinois Youth Soccer Association in 2003 in recognition of his dedication to soccer. He was later inducted into the United States Adult Soccer Association's Hall of Fame 2006.

Illinois Olympic D O

ur Olympic Development Program has kicked off the 2017 - 18 season with a bang and a tremendous sense of excitement from both Players and Parents.

The Illinois Olympic Development Program or ODP is the first step in the identification process for the National and Olympic Teams. The Illinois Youth Soccer Association conducts the program for US Soccer under the jurisdiction of the US Olympic Committee. The purpose of this prestigious program is to identify players on the basis of open tryouts and develop them to represent their state, region, and the United States in soccer competition. We have been working very hard behind the scenes assembling a top notch coaching staff, while raising the minimum requirements at the same time. We have added coaches who for many of us are, and have been experts in their own rights regarding the development and growth of players. Our staff comes from the ranks of Colleges, High Schools and clubs from around the state. Only the most experienced coaches with US

Soccer A and B licenses are working with our youngest groups, the Pre-ODP, to ensure the best player experience. We are very excited in knowing that so many new players have joined our program. 1,000 players are involded in this year’s ODP, which kicked off November 18 at the brand new Indoor Sports Center in Rockford. Here is what we have planned for this season: • 28 event days over 14 weekends that started on November 18th and it will conclude on April 8th • Many of these days will be going on simultaneously at two or more locations including • Indoor Sports Center at Mercy Sportscore Two in Rockford • Schaumburg Sport Center in Schaumburg • Avantis Dome in Pekin • Goals Indoor in Springfield • Power Haus Sports in Columbia In addition to the training during the winter, we also have a

number of tournaments and interstate ODP events: • Rockford College Showcase - Rockford, IL (February 10 – 11) • Interregional Showcase - Memphis, TN (February 17-19) • Ohio Elite Showcase – (February 23-25) • Rockford College Showcase – Rockford, IL (March 3-4) • Michigan ODP Friendlies – (March 10-11)
