From Adam Howarth, Illinois Youth Soccer DOC
As you and your child start or continue your soccer journey here are five things to remember
1. Soccer should be FUN – This should be always at the forefront. Players will quit if they do not like to attend practice or have fun with friends. If they are not connecting with the coach this too will leave to kids quitting. All of the Grassroots coaching courses through Illinois Youth Soccer and US Soccer talk about the need for FUN in every practice and at games
2. Volunteer Coaches – Unless you are the coach do
not coach. All volunteer coaches are looking out for the best interest of the team and want all players to do their best. Provide support to the coach and assist his/her ideas for the team. Consequently this will help the individual player.
3. Recreation soccer is about making Friends – Players are able to get to know new kids through their love of their game. Consequently parents get to meet like-minded parents as well. Both players and parents can meet new people and possibly make new best friends
4. Take it easy on Referees – Referees are often new to the game at the recreational level and like players are learning the game. By yelling at referees you set the wrong standard for the kids. Do not set a bad example and instead enjoy the game with all of its ups and downs. 5. Play – Practice – Play – All soccer players should play in games as much as possible. The more ‘drills’ players do the less fun they will have. At Illinois Youth Soccer we work with coaches to implement the US Soccer Grassroots philosophy of Play – PracticePlay. At home all parents can do the same – play in the backyard with your child

TO TOPSoccer TOPSocce TOPSocc TOPSoc TOPSo TOPS TOP
TOPSoccer is a community based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities. The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl who has a mental or physical disability. The Illinois Youth Soccer – US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer program provides assistance to affiliated organizations with ways to enable players with mental or physical disabilities to play soccer. The emphasis of this program is on development, training, and meaningful participation rather than on competition. Our goal is to enable the thousands of young athletes with disabilities to develop their physical fitness, technical skills, courage, and self esteem, through the joy and excitement of playing soccer. There are thousands of children with disabilities who need, and can be provided with the opportunity to play soccer through the TOPSoccer program. That opportunity exists for these athletes to achieve, develop and compete according to their individual abilities.
TOPSoccer was formed to perpetuate the US Youth Soccer
mission statement which is, in part, "to foster the physical, mental and emotional growth and development of America’s youth through the sport of soccer at all levels of age and competition." There are thousands of children with disabilities who need, and can be provided with, the opportunity to play soccer through the TOPSoccer program.

Don’t Be
“That” Parent
While soccer is primarily about players having fun. Sometimes, parents can be over-enthisiastic when rooting for their child and sometimes that enthusiasm can have an adverse affect on a player. While the below videos have a humorous take on some of the situations, they certainly focus on the very important point that SOCCER IS SUPPOSEd TO bE FUn FOR ThE KIdS.
