How To Get Ready To Compete in Tryouts
Adam Howarth, Illinois Youth Soccer Director Of Coaching
A tryout can be extremely stressful for players. Just as you do at school it is important to give yourself the best opportunity to succeed.
Remember the quote from Benjamin Franklin:
“By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail. Spend your days preparing for success, so when your opportunity comes, you will be ready”
Here are a few tips for all players as they prepare and tryout for clubs.
1. PREPARATION TO COMPETE – Do not start training a few days before the tryout. Work on your game and skills on a regular basis for 3-4 weeks before the tryout. It is important to be good with the ball. Get plenty of touches and make sure you are confident in your first touch.
2. VISUALIZATION TO COMPETE – A great way for players to be ready is to think about what they will do in the tryout before they go to bed. Imagine where you will be on the field the first time you receive the
18
ball and where you will move with and without the ball.
3. SPEED AND REACTION TO COMPETE- Practice quick reaction drills in preparation. Agility runs over short distances and speed runs ranging from 10 to 40 yards. Being first to the ball is important in a tryout.
4. PRACTICE TO PLAY DIFFERENT POSITIONS TO COMPETE – When you are playing put yourself in different positions on the field. Often in a tryout you will be asked to play in a different position. All coaches want players who are flexible and willing to play in different spots. Not everyone can be the #10 so can you play an alternative position in a pinch.
5.FOCUS ON WHAT YOU DO WELL TO COMPETE – If you are a good dribbler work on that in preparation. If your strength is your passing and connecting continue to work on that in your training sessions. It is important that you show in your tryout your strengths and by emphasizing that in training this will come out in the tryout.

Olympic Development Program
The Illinois Olympic Development Program or ODP is the first step in the identification process for the National and Olympic Teams. The Illinois Youth Soccer Association conducts the program for US Soccer under the jurisdiction of the US Olympic Committee. The purpose of this prestigious program is to identify players on the basis of open tryouts and develop them to represent their state, region, and the United States in soccer competition.
Illinos ODP 6-Step Play Development Pathway
Illinois ODP is for serious soccer players who love the game and have hopes of playing in college, professionally and for the US National team. EVERY YEAR THE PROGRAM RECYCLES – ALL PLAYERS BEGIN THE PROGRAM WITH A FRESH START. Players change each year physically and emotionally. Players who may be physically mature at an early age may be surpassed as others mature. Any player can be released and replaced during the process. We DO NOT select players based on their club affiliation or their club team’s record.
Registration for the 2017/18 Illinois ODP is now open for players born 2001-2008.
Training for the 2001 -2005 age groups will take place at the Indoor Sports Center in Rockford.
Training for the 2006-2008 age group will take place at the Schaumburg Sport Center. We will also offer training in the Central & Southern parts of the state. Get complete Illinois ODP details here.
Step 3: Illinois ODP
Under-13 thru U17 Players Notable Illinois ODP Alumni The Olympic Development Program (ODP) is designed Brian McBride: US Soccer Hall Of Fame for elite players who have aspirations to be identified for Jonathan Spector: Orlando City regional and national team events. Don’t Be
“That” Parent
While competitive, soccer is primarily about players having fun. Sometimes, parents can be over-enthisiastic when rooting for their child and sometimes that enthusiasm can have an adverse affect on a player. While the below videos have a humorous take on some of the situations, they certainly focus on the very important point that SOCCER IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN FOR ThE kIDS.
