Recreational soccer is the foundation of our game. It is where players first learn to enjoy the sport and learn soccer skills in a fun and safe environment. It is where many parents have their first interaction with soccer as a volunteer coach or as an anxious parent on the sideline of their child’s first rec game.
Although we are heading into the winter months, Spring will be here before you know it. In this publication you can find information on all of our 70+ recreational member leagues. These programs emphasize fun over winning at all cost and provide a positive environment for young players to learn and enjoy soccer with their neighborhood friends and classmates.
Illinois Youth Soccer provides educational programs and risk management information to our member rec leagues. Through this publication, we are promoting our recreational member programs and providing a resource to parents looking for a credible development program to get their child started in the world game. Member Recreational Programs
Recreational soccer allows young players to learn and enjoy soccer in a positive and fun environment, usually in their own community with the same children with whom they go to school. Rec soccer emphasizes fun and de-emphasizes winning at all costs. Every child is guaranteed playing time and the game is taught in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere. Recreational Soccer: What Should I Expect
Below are 2 key elements to what you should look for in a recreation soccer program. All programs are different but as long as they are following the philosophy of ideas set up below your son/daughter will enjoy their first introduction into soccer!
How should the program be set up? ● There is no selection/tryout process. ● Skill evaluations may be held to form teams in a fair and balanced method. ● All players who register are assigned to a team as long as space is available on team rosters. More often than not teams are set up based on school district boundaries. ● There is usually a one- time registration fee. ● Players benefit from the opportunity for social interaction with other players. ● All games are usually held at the same, local location every weekend for 6-8 weeks. ● Typically, coaches are parent volunteers.
What should I expect from my coaches? ● Positive Attitude, Respect and Sportsmanship for all. ● Try to play attacking and creative soccer ● Equal playing time. ● The priority is to give players opportunities to play to their strengths and eliminate their weaknesses.
3 Tips For Soccer Parents
1. Let the player’s play and the coaches coach! It is easy to get involved in the game and at times say too much during the match. As a parent it is easy to get too enthusiastic when watching your son/daughter play. Keep your comments to yourself and be supportive!
2. Avoid criticizing the Referee The job of a referee is not an easy one and at the recreation level this is often their first experience doing soccer matches on a consistent basis. Give them the benefit of the doubt and let them learn as the game goes on. Often you will see the same referees for your matches so avoid comments during matches.
3. Avoid talking about the match in the car When the game is over, more often than not, your son/daughter has often moved on. It is up to you to do the same thing. Do not worry about how well or poorly they played. Keep your focus on the process and work with them to improve their game

Renews Sponsorship Of Illinois Youth Soccer
Illinois Youth Soccer is excited to announce that Wintrust Community Bank has renewed its sponsorship of Illinois’ largest youth soccer organization and will remain Official Bank of Illinois Youth Soccer thru at least 2019.
“Since 2013, Wintrust Community Bank has been a great supporter of Illinois Youth Soccer and we are very pleased to continue our partnership with Illinois’ premier banking institution,” said Mary Jane Bender, Illinois Youth Soccer Executive Director. “We use our local Wintrust Community Bank, Village Bank & Trust of Arlington Heights, for all of our banking needs, so to have their backing as a sponsor shows their commitment to the soccer community throughout Illinois. Thru the new recreational uniform program, Wintrust is directly giving back to our programs, truly showing their dedication to our programs.”
Part of the renewed sponsorship agreement is the new Wintrust Recreational Uniform Sponsorship Program. Thru this program, selected recreational leagues will receive a direct financial contribution from Wintrust for their uniforms. The new program launched this Fall with Wauconda Township Soccer Association and Franklin Park Thunder Soccer Club as the recipients of the program unveiling.
“With the cost of uniforms, soccer balls, equipment and trophies rising, the Wintrust Community Bank sponsorship will allow us to
continue to provide a quality recreational youth soccer program for the kids in our community, without increasing registration fees,” Wayne Bernacki of Franklin Park Thunder Soccer said.
Each Wintrust Community Bank was founded as a de novo (from scratch) banking organization. What is TOPSoccer?
TOPSoccer (The Outreach program for Soccer) is an adaptive soccer program for athletes with special needs. TOPSoccer athletes spend time learning both soccer and socialization skills in a safe, accepting environment with the assistance of volunteer Buddies and Coaches. Each session emphasizes fun, and every athlete is challenged to grow and learn within his/her abilities. Through the assistance of Buddies and Coaches, the athletes are encouraged to give their best effort, work hard to be the best player he/she can be, and join their fellow players to be a great teammate. Anyone age 5 and up with an intellectual disability and/or physical impairment is welcome to join a local TOPSoccer team.
