LALAINE CHU-BENITEZ Editor-in-Chief and aspiring urban farmer “almost superwoman” Lalaine has been driving Illustrado’s mission to uplift Filipinos in the region for almost a decade now. A former corporate dynamo living in Dubai for over 20 years, she has seen enough to appreciate that the best things in life can’t be bought, and that in this day and age, authenticity could be one’s best asset.
CONSUL GENERAL PAUL RAYMUND CORTES When not performing his duties as the head of the Filipino community in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, or the obligations of a dutiful dad, passionate patriot Paul Raymund Cortes, mulls over how to further enrich the local Filipino community by promoting a more progressive mindset.
BARNEY ALMAZAR, ESQ.
TRACY LEY ORENCIO
TOYM Awardee Barney Almazar, Director at Gulf Law in the Middle East, Philippines and United Kingdom, is ‘the’ legal vanguard for Filipinos in the country. He has authored 4 books dedicated to inform and educate kababayans in the region about the legal system, as well as financial literacy.
Beauty maven Tracy Ley Orencio, a.k.a. “Ms Tracy Ley” in her hugely popular blog, is all about girl power and loving oneself. In this issue, Tracy talks about a subject that freaks out a lot of people – that of being single, and why being single actually rocks.
ANNA DE LEON
Life devoid of makeup and fashion is life lived in mediocrity – a sentence that Anna has lived by since she discovered her 1st Vogue magazine at the age of 9. Empowering women through beauty has always been her passion and she believes that women can rule the world in their stilettos, red lips and razor sharp intelligence.
KRIP YUSON Krip Yuson will soon have his third novel published, titled “The Music Child & the Mahjong Queen,” a follow-up on his seventh collection of poetry, “Islands of Words & Other Poems.” He thinks that the Philippines should have its third female president soon, and that the rest of the world should also be ruled by women, while men should just content themselves with the enjoyment of good single malt.
KRISTINE ABANTE
(Quoting Albert Einstein) Kristine Abante says of herself, “I have no special talent, I am only passionately curious.” An entertainment industry expert, who spends her downtime looking for the next great adventure wherever she could find it, Kristine uses her writing to relive her experiences twice and to encourage others to join the ride.
NICHOLO JALLORES
Associate Editor Nicholo Jallores tries to be everything - careful and vigilant, in that he does not end up as nothing. He wants to make it clear that THAT sentence isn’t nearly as forlorn as it sounds.
ABY YAP
What makes the Pinoy tick? Aby Yap’s long-running column “Onli in Da Pilipins” often answers that question. She talks about artistas, the pabebe, and the familiar Pinoy life, turning it into something fun and extraordinary. With a talent for finding every Juan’s funny bone, Aby’s wit and obvious affection makes the Filipino a whole lot more lovable.
ROSAN KATLEA REODICA
Rosan is a Desert Mermaid who always wants to stay wet wherever she goes. She tells impatient people that she is a Practicing Misis - a woman of hits and misses. Being told she won’t be able to get married without learning to cook adobo, she has now learned to make her own pesto, guacamole and her own flavored taho. She now has a book, but still doesn’t have her own kitchen.

few weeks remain before Election Day. It promises to be the tightest presidential contest since… well, maybe 1992 when FVR won the derby, topping Maid (some say Mad) Miriam, who immediately claimed she was cheated. No such claim arose after Erap won handily in 1998. But he didn’t last halfway through his term. Replacing him after “EDSA Dos,” GMA was said to have gamed her election as president in 2004, with “Hello, Garci!” tapes eventually appearing to confirm that she had to cheat to beat back the challenge of another popular movie star and action hero, FPJ. The 2010 election saw PNoy winning comfortably over the second-placer, a comebacking Erap who might have had his second stint at the Palace had former President Tita Cory (who had ended Macoy’s 21-year rule) not pass away to practically bequeath her son his sudden presidency. Thus, after Marcos, we’ve had claims of cheating in alternate elections. And this time, fears have again been raised that Administration gaming might be tried again.

promise of radical change finally dislodged Poe as frontrunner.
Like some relationships in Facebook, it’s complicated. And yes, the lead-up to the actual polls continues to be a thriller. Before Duterte took pole position in the latest surveys, his rabid supporters were already threatening a revolution should he be cheated of victory. At the time this warning was raised, their tough-talking, expletive-spouting idol had started to gain momentum to creep up on erstwhile frontrunner Grace Poe, foundling and adopted daughter of FPJ, whose own dramatic narrative arc pulled in strong core support even as she faced legal challenges all the way to the Supreme Court. Surprisingly and somewhat disappointingly for her supporters, clearing all the hurdles with apparent finality didn’t produce the ratings spike that was expected for her to pull away again from Du30. Current analysis posits that the daily dose of blackprop mounted against her by at least three rival camps started taking its toll. So that Digong’s momentum built on the
It’s said that surveys can undergo twists and turns, and that this contest is still too tight to call. After all, the early favorite, VP Binay, whose own core support seemed to have been gnawed away by repeated charges of corruption, still has the “ground game” and the wherewithal fueled by desperation to get back into contention. And PNoy’s anointed one, Mar Roxas, may still count on the Admin party’s supposed clout with local candidates. So who will it be, for Prez and Veep? Most centrists are currently chagrined that the unlikely pair of Duterte and Bongbong Marcos might make it all the way. Yet challenges can still be mounted by those placing second to fourth in the presidential race, with only Miriam at a poor fifth out of it all. And in the VP tussle, Leni Robredo could still gain a good push down the wire, while early frontrunner Chiz Escudero also can’t be counted out yet. That they’re both from Bicol could work against both and the hope of standing up to the so-called Solid North vote. Oh, it is complicated. One final note: that latest survey has 9% and 11% undecided for the two positions, respectively. That’s still a lot of points up for grabs, so that it certainly promises to be exciting down to the last survey, and up to Election Day.

Say no to usapang barbero. Dapat, Illustrado!
The BIG VOTE Illustrado conducted a Philippine Presidential Election survey with Filipino expats across 92 countries with 5,004 respondents. The results show that 87% are for Duterte. Agree with the majority’s choice or disagree? Check out the vigorous discussions on our Facebook page #UsapangIllustrado. ALDEN L. FLORES > Duterte and Miriam are both deserving. You can never tell who is more deserving until we see both play the role. It’s just a matter of who should play the role first. Remember that GMA has good credentials too but she failed the Filipinos a lot of times. We need a president with a big heart not one with a big brain. I’d give the first chance to Duterte. I can say that he has a servant heart and Davao has been a good testimony for his actions that no one can deny. I’m not saying that Mriam doesn’t have a heart to serve. It’s just that Duterte has a more visible proof for me, just for me. In fact if Duterte fails, I’ll root for Miriam on the next election (if she will run). And just want to quote that “everyone deserves progress” regardless of the differences in opinions. VICTOR MANALAC > This is how exasperated people here and abroad are about our country, So much so that they just want to crack the whip and hit real buttocks! ELIE MAGAT > Duterte is fine but Madam Sen Miriam Defemsor Santago is too valuable to lose. Wake up Philippines! CZAM ANGELA > I don’t think Miriam is the best option. Yes all of you are correct that she is so brilliant but as Mayor Duterte said, we don’t need people who make laws because we have enough laws on our country. The problem is only the implementation of these laws. Who do you think can implement this? Who has the track record of implementing such laws? I only have mayor #DUTERTE2016 to make this happen. Change is coming. Be prepared to obey the law or else, face the consequences. illustrado go>12
ROYD BELZ Magkasing tulad ng katangian nila Miriam at Duterte. Pareho silang magaling. Itong dalawa din ang gusto ko, pero siempre isa lang dapat piliin at iboto. Tingnan nalang natin ang tally nila, parang sa boxing ba. Tingnan natin kung sino ang mas nakakalamang – 1) Health: Duterte; 2) Experience : both; 3) Academic awards – Miriam; 4) Education : both; 5) Power performance : Duterte; 6) World record : Duterte; 7) Strong political will : Duterte; 8) Gender : Duterte dahil mas maganda talagang tingnan ang lalaking presidente. PERCY CONCEPCION > Duterte promises to stabilize the country with armed men and a dictatorial scheme. But he never promised any action on those powerful people who keep on stealing from the country’s funds, ONLY if they will oppose and try to oust him, that’s when he will make his move. Miriam has one big principle, to KILL THE CORRUPTION. That’s one promise that leads to change. No to Duterte. Mga ordinaryong mamamayan ang mag-aadjust sa kanya. While si Miriam, mga high profile na dayuhang sindikato at druglords sa bansa ang napakulong at napadeport niya when she was Immigration Commissioner. Miriam Santiago declared an all-out war against alien pedophiles and members of criminal syndicates. She received many threats to her life, to which she said, “I
am not afraid. I eat death threats for breakfast!” Eh si Duterte? Small time criminals, drug dealer at mahihirap na kriminal lang nagawa niyang ipakulong. Worst pa dun, pinapapatay pa niya? What if napagbintangan lang sila? They were killed without due process. Wake up Philippines! LEE ANDREW >I think that the reason is because, Filipino overseas experienced and they themselves are observing the leadership and governance in the country where they are staying and working. Filipinos can obey laws follow rules and now, they see that back home it’s not the same. And they know that the country will be a better place if#du30 will win. SARAH MAE BORJA >Australian Filipinos having working visa still vote for Mayor Duterte for President JIGGS FUENTES-LOPOZ >The fight is in the barangays...NOT on FB or social media. Meantime, Binay has zoomed in the lead again. #notobinay ROSE SANTOS > Sorry but I will not vote for an immoral, arrogant and criminal-minded person to lead 100M Filipinos. God bless the Philippines with a leader who is not a magician but a professional - hardworking, intelligent, who has GMRC on top of being competent, with no political dynasty as well as no corruption records. DELOSSANTOS MAGDALENA > Maraming silent wise voters. OFW ako pero number one dito si Mar Roxas.

Towards empowering Filipinos.
It’s about you, not your stuff, silly. By> Lalaine Chu-Benitez
Aren’t you just exhausted, dahling? Oh, it is sooo so tiring to live in this fabulous city. After all, it takes supreme effort to keep up stride with all the slim, fashion forward, rich and fabulous Joneses of this town, n’est ce pas?
S
hy? Modest? No space for you here, I’m afraid. This place is not for the wallflower, or even for the low-credit-card-limitclueless carrying the last two seasons’ ‘it’ bag. Don’t you know that your collection of designer duds needs a regular update? Dahling, you gotta have the bag, the watch, the shoes, the car, and of course, the holiday. Because if you don’t - horrors of horrors! -what have you got to share with all your Facebook and Instagram “friends”?! Authenticity – no, not that word that people have come to associate mostly with the Birkin, but the earnest garden variety type, seems to be such a rare commodity these days. It is buried deep under the pretense of unflappable on-point stylishness and access to the latest obsessions of the product kind. Not that I have any bone to pick with those who truly adore fine things. I love them myself. Though admittedly, my definition of ‘fancy’ may be a tad off tangent from
illustrado go>18
the typical. But you have to admit, right here, where most everything is shiny and new, and right now, where our overcommercialized pop culture exerts buying pressure on the weak of constitution, while social media has given rise to the new exhibitionist, it’s pretty hard to sift through all the posturing, posing and product posting to see what people are really about.
enough to be yourself, and being able to carry yourself with confidence, regardless whether you wear unbranded or designer, whether you have the latest things or not, or whether you fit into the mold of what is considered ‘on fleek’ these days.
It’s a dangerous thing - allowing ourselves to be defined by stuff. Even more dangerous when we attach our self-worth to them that we don’t know who we are sans the bling. Then again, there’s worst. That’s when we get enslaved by the need for all this and allow our lives to be messed up by it. Now, I know you’ve heard a story or two about those living la vida loca until their card maxing ways caught up with them.
But then again, what do I know, right? I’m just a simple Pinay, with simple joys. I don’t have 26 designer bags in my closet and my idea of luxe is having time to do nothing. I am not perfect. I don’t have everything. But I know I am enough.
Of course, authenticity does not mean being spartan or shabby or depriving oneself of all indulgences. Authenticity, in fact has nothing to do with stuff, or the ownership or absence of it. It’s about knowing who you are, being brave
We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t like. – Edward Norton, The Fight Club
It is about not being all about the stuff. It’s simple essence, versus empty display.
But dahling, who are you? I hope you know exactly who you are, too. Power to the Pinoy. Magpakatotoo ka.

KEEPING UP WITH THE CONGEN > Tales from your friendly n eighbourhood Philippine Consul-General.
Of Being Consul and the Real Me By > Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes
Only when I am comfortable being my true self to the community can I be an effective leader. The arsenal of genuine public service is a bottomless well if filled only with truth in character.
I
reached one of the twin peaks of my diplomatic career a little over eighteen years after I took my oath as a Foreign Service Officer. About 11 of us were blessed with the lucky charm of promotion into Chief of Mission rank, each of us pondering how our new responsibilities would change our worlds. I recall how one of my new batch mates jokingly counseled me to sing less than I often do as it would be deemed unbecoming. As Chief of Mission or Consul General or Ambassador, it is now incumbent to comport myself in a manner befitting the title His Excellency. What it means to be a dignified diplomat sounds outright nebulous. It is societal sequitur, many opine, that as I was already on “top of the heap,” norms on deportment is now a tad more rigid than it was for young, uninhibited greenhorns. As junior officers, we enjoyed the liberty of spontaneity, though necessarily blanketed with prudence of course, and part of that
illustrado go>20
convenience, in my case, included a lot of singing. Sadly, not anymore so! Singing had always been my passion. It defines me; it paints me as a unique individual. I’ve always felt happiest when I sing. Until now, it is as if I continually rediscover one of the essences of my soul whenever I serenade an audience. I am passionate about music and performing and I carried all that as I entered the Foreign Service. Though my forays into artistic pursuits and diplomacy were unplanned, their serendipitous marriage could not have been a more perfect fit. It was this unconventional side (coupled with my ever-affable wife) that brought me closer to the Filipino communities I had served, allowing me a more personal approach as I functioned as a foreign service officer. Advised to scale down on my singing and be a “Congen,” I thought about how much of myself I must divest to be an authentic public servant. As Consul General, I play the role of my ‘kababayans’ last ray of
hope, their role model, and their de facto leader. Where does authenticity lie in the context of these roles? What does being true to oneself mean for those of us in the Foreign Service? I mull over almost two decades in the diplomatic circle and nothing is more crystal clear than affirming that there should be no difference in the manner I shared myself as a junior diplomat to the way I am expected to fit in my new role. I step up my plate, fully convinced that there is possibly no way I can confidently live up to the hype by being less than myself. Only when I am comfortable being my true self to the community can I be an effective leader. The arsenal of genuine public service is a bottomless well if filled only with truth in character. Anything less than the authenticity of oneself jeopardizes the foundation of a sustainable public trust in someone like the Consul General.

bags, the latest gadgets, or expensive cars – not if you stop using the Vanderbilt’s as your benchmark. The trick is to go for experiences, not things - memories, not material trappings. You can reward yourself in other more sensible and conscientious ways, without having to break the bank and making yourself look like a frivolous try-hard.
Sometimes you just gotta feel rich. You know how it is. You work like a dog day in and day out, and come payday you just want – no, need - to reward yourself for your all your sacrifice and hard labor. The struggle is real, hence the prize must be as real and tangible. You have to see it, smell it, hear it, hold it tightly in the palm of your hand until you feel in the very core of your being that, yes, you are successful. There is a point to all of your demeaning elbow grease. You are not just another cog in the machine. You are the toast of the town. You are made, and you have the bag, the gadget, the dress, the shoes to prove it. Viva la alta!
And then comes the credit card bill. And the phone bill. And a message on Facebook from a relative back home, asking you for another loan. And as you pace around the room that you share with four other illustrado go>22
bedspacers, you realize that you just do not have the wherewithal to maintain the luxe life you have been trying to portray on Instagram. Your last name is not Kardashian or Mayweather. You do not have a Porsche; you have a metro card. You don’t have a crib; you have the upper bunk of a rickety double deck in one of the least desirable areas in the city. You want to feel rich, but the reality is that you are far from it, and playing at the life of the rich and famous is only making you poorer. No one is going to arrest you for wanting to feel wealthy, lavish, and comfortable. It’s perfectly within your base nature to strive for a sense of security and stability. But if lusting for luxury is forcing you to live way beyond your means, then you only really have two choices: 1.) don’t, or 2.) rethink your definition of extravagance. Luxury does not always have to equate to designer
1.) Sleep more As a diligent and ambiguous fellow you always find yourself running on top speed and not having enough time to rest and recover from a day’s work. Sleep then becomes a scarce commodity – a luxury. And when you do get the opportunity to have more of it, you find that it feels like a real treat. Start thinking of yourself as a movie star who is contractually obliged to have a full night’s rest. Your body needs it, you can’t always have as much of it as you would want, and it’s free. There’s just no downside to it. 2.) Be your own gourmet cook Not everyone can afford to eat at a fine dining restaurant every day, but that shouldn’t stop you from preparing your own Michelin star-worthy meals in the comfort of your own home. With just a few minutes looking at recipes on Youtube or food blogs, you can turn simple ingredients into a sublime dish fit for royalty. Learn to appreciate the fact that despite your hardships in life, you can still afford to eat better than most people in the world. Do not take that for granted. 3.) Sign up for volunteer work Social responsibility tends to be a sophisticated concept, and those who are quick to lend a helping hand tend to be people who have achieved a significant degree of financial stability. Of course, the reality is that the spirit of volunteerism

Instead of going on another exhausting and financially draining night-out, invite your friends over for dinner and drinks at home and practice your act as the host with the most. own private space to enjoy quality time with people that you like, and you’ll look like the Alpha of your group. 5.) See something new in the city You don’t always have to go out of town to feel like a tourist. There is always something new to see and discover in your locale. When was the last time you looked at the city map, went to a museum website, saw a play, or walked leisurely in the park? PHP30 Can Grow to
Each Day
MILLIONS By> Francisco Colayco
e er m A t. h g ri t a th d a re Yes, you ay can grow to millions? PHP30 eachadt weird and wonderful!? Isn’t th The first thing you need to do is SAVE. One of the most frequent questions I am asked is, “How much should I save?” My rule-of-thumb is 20%. You might recall the equation we have been taught all our life: INCOME - EXPENSES = SAVINGS This is wrong. Nowadays, the prevalent financial equation is EXPENSES – INCOME = UTANG (DEBT)! This is worse! The correct equation is INCOME – SAVINGS = EXPENSES You must put aside 20% of your monthly income before you start spending. If you earn PHP500 each day, the tendency is that you spend it all. If you only earn PHP400 per day, you will manage to live within that PHP400. That is why you should already set aside the PHP100 (equal to 20% of P500) and live within the PHP400 (roughly 80% of your income). This way, you will live within the amount available to you. As they say, water seeks its own levels. If you don’t have the money available, then you will be forced to cut your expenses because you have no choice. The PHP100 is your payment to yourself to prepare for your financial future. One half of the 20% you set aside (or 10%) should be used to build up a cash illustrado go>24
reserve until it accumulates to an amount equivalent to your six months income. This cash has to be placed in financial instruments (with minimal risks) that generate income at a rate higher than our inflation rate of 3%. The other 10% should be allotted for paying your life and medical insurance premiums as well as your longterm savings plans. Over time, this 20% should increase in absolute amount. When this happens, you will be able to reach your goal faster. It is very difficult to start this habit, but once you do it you will be surprised to see how fast your financial assets grow. The key is to leave your savings and investments alone. You will also realize that your savings really come from not spending on certain things that you do not need at all. Saving PHP33 a day or PHP100 a month invested prudently can earn an annual rate of 12%. At this rate, if you leave your money alone, and just let it “roll” it will compound and grow to a value of PHP 232,340. in 10 years. Look at what happened here? Over a period 120 months or ten years, you gradually saved only PHP125,000 (including the initial PHP 5,000) and it grew to almost the double amount.
If you are able to continue this process for another 10 years, meaning saving another PHP120,000 over 120 more months, your savings will grow to PHP 999,150, or more than four times more than the total amount of PHP245,000 (including the initial PHP5,000) you saved over 240 months or 20 years. What if you can earn 15% per year (a real possibility) instead of 12%? Then your PHP1,000/mo will grow to PHP278,660 in 10 years, PHP1,515,955 in 20 years, PHP7,008,200 million in 30 years or PHP31,403,760 million in 40 years. And what do you have to do to accumulate this wealth? Save an initial PHP5,000 and invest it and add to the initial investment only PHP1,000 per month. How does Weird and Wonderful Phenomenon happen? Other than your being able to start with an investment of PHP5,000, the secret is a well-managed mutual fund and the power of compounding over time. Compounding over a long period of time grows your investments at exponential rates.

UAE IMMIGRATION A Primer on
By> Atty. Barney Almazar
The General Directorate of Naturalization and Residency (GDNR) is the authority responsible for the issuance, renewal and cancellation of entry permissions and visas pursuant to the provisions of Federal Law No 6 of 1973 on Entry and Residence of Foreigners as well as the rules and instructions issued by the Ministry of Interior. Who are deemed foreigners? Is dual citizenship recognized in the UAE? Any person who is not a citizen of UAE is considered a foreigner subject to the immigration laws of the country. The UAE does not recognize dual citizenship. If you are a dual citizen, you must present the same passport in entering and exiting the country. If a Filipina marries an Emirati, will she automatically become a citizen of UAE? No. She is required to renounce her Philippine citizenship and apply for Emirati citizenship. Children with Filipino mother and Emirati father can acquire Emirati citizenship. What are the types of entry permissions to UAE? If issued in Dubai, can it be used in Abu Dhabi? The GDNR issues visit/tourist visas, residence visa for employment and residence visas without employment (such as those sponsored by their family). The entry permits/visas, regardless of place of issuance, is valid in any emirate. Can I work under a visit visa? No. A visit visa will not allow you to work, whether paid or not. Even if you are selfemployed, you are not allowed to perform any work on a visit visa. If your visa is issued for employment, you cannot work for another without the written consent of the GDNR. Can a visa be cancelled without notification to the holder? Can I be deported even if my visa is still valid? The Ministry of Interior can cancel a visa/ entry permit at any time, even prior to expiry date for reasons of public interest. As a general rule, only those who have no, expired or cancelled visa are deported. However, the Ministry of Interior may issue
an order for deportation of any foreigner, even if he holds a valid visa, in the following cases: a. if he has been convicted and the court has issued an order for his deportation; b. if he has no apparent means of living; and c. if the security authorities see that deportation is dictated by public interest, security or morals. What are the rules being observed by the UAE Immigration regarding a foreigner’s passport? The passport must conform to the following in order for its holder to enter UAE: • must have a validity of not less than 6 months • no manipulation of photo • no removal or alteration in the particulars • no apparent damage that prejudices the particulars • no irregularities in pagination/page numbers/missing/pulled pages If the grace period (following the visa cancellation) has lapsed, can I just pay the overstay fine while waiting for my new visa? You can pay the overstay fine as long as your previous sponsor has not yet filed an absconding case against you. Your sponsor has the right to report you as an absconder if you failed to leave the country or get a new visa after the lapse of your grace period following cancellation. Even if you are willing to pay your overstay fine, the Immigration will still require you to clear your absconding case. Can my employer file an absconding case against me if I’m not in the country? As a general rule, an absconding case can only be filed if the employee is inside the UAE. However, your employer can file an absconding case against you and cancel your visa if you are out of the country for more than 3 months. What is an exit prohibition order? It contains the list of individuals who are prohibited from leaving the UAE due to: • an order has been issued by the Public Prosecutor in a case under investigation; • a written order has been issued in a case by a competent court; or • indebtedness
If I have a pending Police Case, can my visa application be granted? It depends where you are at the time of application. If you are in the UAE, your visa application will be denied unless you will be able to clear your case. If your visa application is being processed while you are outside UAE (meaning a case has been filed against you after you left UAE), then your visa will still be approved as the government is interested to acquire jurisdiction over your person and proceed with the case when you enter UAE. Is it true that those who were deported can return to UAE after a year? The automatic removal from the blacklist has limited application. Only the following can re-enter the country one year following their deportation: (1) domestic helpers whose visas were cancelled prior to expiry of contract; (2) those deported for overstaying and (3) those who did not pay their overstay fine in full. Those deported for other reasons can return to UAE by appealing their cases before the Immigration, Prosecutor or the courts. Is it legal to buy a visa? How can I legally stay in the country if I do not have a sponsor? Buying of visa is illegal. The easiest and most practical way to have your own visa is to create your own company that will sponsor your residence visa. You will not need to lease an office space or find a local sponsor. You can even split the cost of setting up a freezone company with your friends as all of you can become shareholders and at the same time be sponsored by your own company. A freezone company can provide you up to 3 visas valid for 3 years for only AED35,000. If you have more friends who wants to become shareholders, you can setup a company with up to 6 visas for only AED45,000. that a lot of Filipinos would probably aspire for. Currently I rank the highest amongst the Filipinos in the company. I take pride in representing Filipinos at the office, especially when I discuss business strategies on a quarterly basis with the top management like the CEOs, Senior Vice Presidents, Vice Presidents, and General Managers. To be part of the Executive Team, can get very challenging. The expectations are huge and you have to be ready and prepared all the time. CAREER ADVICE Believe in yourself, stay hungry and don’t settle for less. Get acquainted with the kind of person you ought to be. Don’t give up on your dreams, they are worth fighting for. It has always been my mantra to keep striving for more and often I ask myself ‘how could I have done this better?’ This will help you improve yourself.
Apart from meeting a lot of cool people, one of the perks of my job is traveling. For the last 10 years in Dubai, the only thing that kept me sane is the fact that I get to travel to different countries almost every other month. It’s great but it’s also exhausting. But hey, no complaints, I get to travel all expenses paid! CAREER ADVICE Be yourself. Be proud of being a Filipino. Acknowledge that you are a talented individual and that you can do needs to be done. Filipinos are very diligent and have an unbelievable resilience. Our work ethics are the best in the world; we have the best minds there is. Our attitude and our positive outlook in life define the culture that we have and we must embrace that. Living in the Middle East for 10 years has taught me many valuable things but one thing stands out – equality! In Dubai, equal opportunities are there regardless of nationality. We just have to believe that we can do it, and do it better!

Celebrating Filipino artistry, passion, and cleverness.
UP Diliman Fine Arts graduate Kris Kang is an artist who has chosen to build a fresh new life and career in Dubai. After years of trying to find his style and rhythm as an artist, he found painting to be the best way for him to express himself. Kris who represented the Philippines and won at the ASEAN Art Competition in 2014 currently works as a Graphic Designer in Dubai while preparing for his upcoming exhibitions. Recently, he has collaborated with poet Danabelle Gutierrez for the book and art exhibition ‘& Until the Dreams Come’ held at FN Designs at Al Serkal Avenue, and participated at the Middle East Film and Comic Con 2016.
“I love painting stories through surreal imagery. So far I have been using watercolor for the past 6 years because I love how “personal” it feels. For me, the story shows a lot of dimension when you see the strokes and the imperfections of each piece. In painting surreal artworks, what I love is the endless possibilities that you can come up with. It’s a great escape from this very fast-paced city.” “When I started working, I used painting as an “escape” from all the stresses of my job. Opaque mediums (like acrylic) for me were too aggressive; I was looking for a medium that would feel like therapy. I think watercolor fits with that because it’s compact, it’s easy to set-up and it doesn’t dry easily so you have more time to explore and manipulate it.” Someday, I hope I will be able to make bigger and impactful artworks. Right now I am doing this as a creative outlet. But I hope in the next years, I get to make pieces that are relevant to society and something that will bring pride to our country. I would love to collaborate with organizations to help them voice out their causes. The best lesson I have learned so far in life is to really love what you are doing. It really feels good to paint pieces and not care whether they sell or not. As long as you are happy with what you did, and you have placed yourself in these pieces, it’s priceless. CROMWELL OJEDA Cromwell Ojeda, the founder of Blacksheep Production - a collective of Filipino artists in Dubai – who pioneered the Filipino underground music scene, is a graphic artist by day, and a musician who plays in several local bands including Tsinelas (Punk Rock), Goddamn Electric (Hard Rock), Juliana Down (Alternative Rock) and an audio experimentalist/ambient artist who produces his own brand of music with Muhaisnah Four (Synth Pop / Chillwave) at night. Cromwell’s design work has allowed him to share his experiences with others, while his music has brought him to different places and gave him the opportunity to meet a lot of people. He has played in front an audience of 2 and 15,000; was a featured speaker at “Creative Mornings” at the Dubai Media City; while some of the designs he has exhibited are sitting on other people’s houses. He says, “Having the chance to provide inspiration that can create a change people’s lives for the better is something special.” MY ART. MY PASSION. I’m very fortunate to have a career in the creative industry here in the UAE – doing what I love. I’m a big fan of design and aesthetics in general. As for music, it’s

food for my soul. I need music to keep me inspired in whatever I do. The best thing I like about it is the feeling of being special when you create something you can call your own - something that no one can take away from you. Design and music is also the medium that I use to bond or connect with people I meet. I collaborate with them on a design project or on a track. I think it’s one of the purest forms of connection I can offer in my own special way.
app that lets you check in into places. When I presented it to a possible sponsor, he told me about Fourspace! Just last week I uploaded a video of me working on a song where my bass sounded like another song that I haven’t heard ever! It’s hard to be original in this age where everything seems to be available at the tip of your finger. Instead of originality, I think being authentic in what we do should be the focus instead.
MY PROCESS For both music and design I always start with a concept. There should be a concept with anything I do with my art - a story that needs to be told. Once I’ve locked in on the concept, I start creating it. Having zero background in design or music school, there is no right or wrong for me. I just do what I feel like doing. If it feels good then, I’ll continue. If it’s not, I’ll try something out until I get the right feel. I listen to a lot f music and read design blogs to keep me inspired.
MY FORTHCOMING PROJECTS I’m currently writing an album for Muhaisnah Four. It’s long overdue but I’m still on 60% of the production side! Aside from that, we are organizing a gig for Blacksheep on January 8 at The Music Room. I’m also playing a gig at the Dubai Marina Music Festival on Christmas and New Year’s Eve!
MY STAMP I did it so it’s mine. I created it out of pure life and passion, so I guess that’s the only way I can say that my works are mine. How am I different from others? I really don’t know! How can I be sure that my style of music or design is original? I can never tell! Many years ago, I thought of a social media

3 WAYS TO SUMMER BEAUTY
By> Anna De Leon
Yes, there are still mornings when we wake up to gray skies in Dubai, however, there is no reason as to why we shouldn’t be preparing for the season of summer dresses, tans and beach waves. Unlike the colder months where we have the tendency to wear a ton of makeup and actually get away with it, summer is pared down. Time to keep full coverage foundation in the vanity and go easy on the contour. If you want to exude the Gisele Bundchen aura, read along for some tips and tricks and let me help you breeze through summer in 3 gorgeous ways. 1. Trade your full coverage foundation for a bb or cc cream. This not only provides sheer coverage but also acts as a moisturizer and provides your skin with much needed antioxidants. BB and CC Creams aren’t purely cosmetic; they are skincare products as well. 2. Conceal. If I were stuck in an island and was asked to bring only one article of makeup , it will be a concealer. Hide your dark circles with a yellow undertoned concealer that is a shade lighter than your skin. Press the
illustrado go>32
concealer with your ring finger. The warmth of your hands will break down the product making it blend into your skin better. 3. Summer is all about that “I woke up like this” vibe. While it is okay to define your brows and to contour, you have to take it down a notch. No harsh lines. Instead of contouring, why not bronze? Apply bronzer lightly on where the sun would kiss your face (hit is such a strong word) the apples of the cheeks, chin, forehead and bridge of the nose. 4. If you want a more dramatic look for the hot summer nights , there are two (2) fool proof ways to sizzle. Your eyes can either have the spotlight or be a Summer Siren by highlighting your eyes and lips. 5. Having the smoldering “come hither eyes” that will give Dubai
Summer a run for its money is as easy as investing on a good brown or black eye pencil. Consider a water proof one. Line your waterline and tight line. Using an angled brush, smudge some brown eyeshadow on the lower lash line. Curl your lashes, apply one coat of mascara, comb through and reapply mascara, et voila. 6. Being the Summer Siren is as easy as trading your nude lips to a fiery red. Make sure that you apply your red lipstick precisely as dark, rich colors are unforgiving and there is nothing more alluring than a perfect red pout.
Being a Summer Beauty is not hard, in fact, it is easier than the full on glam looks commonly found during winter. It is all about that radiant sun-kissed look that it light, breezy and easy on the eyes.

How to work it wh en you wear it coz you’re worth it.
Fashion is not just “play”— it is my LIFE. ”
FRANCIS IZHCKA ZETA
Fa s h i o n D e s i g n e r a n d C re a t i ve D i re c t o r for Jacy Kay Couture, Dubai
Francis ‘Izhcka’ Zeta is quite arguably, the quintessential fashion horse. Those who are familiar with him know all too well that Izhcka doesn’t only create amazing works of art in the form of couture, but he also dresses quite distinctively, so much so that people who pass him by can’t help but look. Whether just working in his atelier at Jacy Kay, strutting down Dubai Mall for a box of macarons at La Duree, or throwing air kisses to other designer friends at Fashion Forward, this Filipino fashionista is always well turned-out. We look into the artist’s personal style and found out that it is his passion for his craft that makes him, not only unique, but also a formidable figure in the industry. Fashionable Me “Fashion is like my morning coffee that I cannot live without. IT IS ESSENTIAL. Corollary to that, is the fact that it is my job not just to be fashionable but to bring out fashion. Being in this industry consumes my daily life, my very self. Fashion is not just “play”— it is my LIFE. “
“I am fashionable as to when I choose my stuff. My mind is so wired that all of them must be in proper order— have color schemes, elegance, and value. Not necessarily expensive, since price does not make a person fashionable, but at least, with a sense of amusing choice. But then, I still crave for things that I have grown up with, even if they are not in trend.” My typical wear is muted. I like the elegance of muted colors. I think classic monochrome like black elevates to high stature in terms of fashion sense. There is something in it that defines the relativity of individual taste. It never goes out of fashion and it has no boundaries. Sometimes, when I feel playful in my craft, I punctuate my style with loud colors. I can be bold and daring. I am not afraid to experiment and create shocking ensembles. Accessories by Alexander McQueen, skull emblem on rings and bracelets are always present in my outfit.”
Can’t Live Without “My family. Definitely. I belong to a “multitude” family, haha! We love one another. Their support is fantastic and I think, no matter how clichéd it sounds, I’ve become who I am, because of them.” My Fashion Philosophy “Life is a dance, put on the best goddamn dress for the occasion.” This is my mantra. You might ask why, and I am more than happy to comply. Fashion might be timeless, but I also recognize the fact that each and every one has different taste. One precious stone here for some, and more precious stones there, for others. Life, as we all have experienced it, has its quirks - loneliness, happiness, loveliness, and even death. Yet we live and strive to be happy—to dance in spite of the challenges. Whatever the mood of our life is, there is a dress that reflects it. Wear it and be happy. Dance with hope regardless of the occasion.”

Being Real: Ryle Tuvierra
While most other style bloggers are upping the ante promoting their uber fab existence with all the perks that come with the popular blogger territory - the front row seats, the designer clothes and accessories, the limo pick-ups and lux hotel stays, all in all a glamorous Chanelscented life, one Filipino has gone all out to buck the trend.
Style blogger on the rise Ryle Tuviera “The Fiercewalker”, a well-loved figure in the local fashion blogging community, known for his tasteful ensembles and a gift for wearing it well, recently dropped a reveal in his blog that serves as an eye-opener and an important lesson to share not only with his more seasoned counterparts, but with people in general in an industry where the need to keep up with the Joneses is a big deal, especially in the grand city of bling. Ryle, who has a strong following to his blog and on Instagram, and who recently got appointed as Dubai representative of Marriam Mossalli of Shoes and Drama and Niche Arabia, who used to tell people that he is a merchandiser working in a fancy office because he was afraid of being judged, recently opened up about his real day job in his blog www.thefiercewalker. com. He shares – “I Am Ryle Tuvierra and this is my noble job. I am a simple store staff in a 24-hour convenience store at the heart of Business Bay. I work as a normal store staff; as a normal person with no glamour. I cook fried chicken, spring rolls and fries. I clean the toilet from time to time, wash dirty cloths and clean the tables for customers. I do deliveries to apartments around the area and collect garbage for throwing in trash trucks. I am not afraid to be judged because of my real job. I am here for you to know that not everyone you see in a person is real. All the laughter, illustrado go>44
glitz and glamour can sometimes be just an illusion.” Ryle who says he has always been told by his two moms to always be honest to succeed explains, “I want to share my story because a lot of people think that if you are abroad and you are into fashion, then you must be rich and fab. But the truth is that most of us are hiding the real truth like our real jobs, salary, and etc. But we are getting this kind of attention because we get exclusive invitations to parties and events.” Sharing how he makes it work, Ryle enthuses, “Yes, you may see me as the feisty Fiercewalker but when it comes to my work I am just a normal store staff always waiting for the customers smile and satisfaction with my service. I am so happy every time I get smiles and laughter from customers that I forget I don’t get much sleep because of my schedule. I always find ways to make everything easy in my life.” He adds, “Sometimes I work for 24 hours, managing my job and then blogging and attending events, but I love it! This is my passion. I have always wanted to be in the fashion industry since I was a kid. So I fought for it and sacrificed so many things in order for me to be where I am right now. I know I may sound crazy or ambitious but if you really want something, you will fight for it and you will do anything and everything just to get it. I really love
working in fashion and I think this is the only way for me to get to my dreams and goals in life. My story is a mirror of everyone working abroad. I am working for my family and for my dreams.” As for balancing his dreams and his day job he says, “You don’t need to be in a fancy job for you to influence other people and to get them inspired. I have to admit that I am dreaming that someday I will have a better job that suits my personality and my interests, but for now I will be a normal store staff at a 24 hours convenience store, serving customers every day with a happy smile and a positive vibe. “Let everybody know what you are doing but never let them define you as person and who you have to be in life. You have the free will to do whatever you want. Just use that in the right manner and right place so you can have a better future in life. “
THE PRACTICING
MISIS >
Kitchen advise for the curious cook!
Skills Muna Bago Feels “Ang dumi dumi naman ng kalan! Ano? Hindi ka marunong mag-adobo? Pano ka mag-aasawa niyan? Naku, anak!”
By> Rosan Katlea
That’s my mother complaining about me in the kitchen - the reason why I started “The Practicing Misis”. Well, I haven’t been proposed to yet (ehem...) and feminists would argue that a woman’s role at home should not be bound to the kitchen. But this project was not created to lure the boyfriend to pop the question, or to say that all “Mrs and soon to be Missises (paano nga ba ang plural?) should learn how to cook. Nope! This project, in fact, is dedicated to my late maternal grandmother and my mother – my aspirational ‘Cooking Squad’ considered the food gurus in our small town in Cavite, Philippines. Fashion bloggers and food bloggers write about what they know. But here I am, cooking and writing my way through what I don’t know. Does it make any sense? Anyhow, I hope to inspire foodies who don’t know anything about cooking (only eating). It’s never too late to learn. But please don’t expect any adobo here. While my cooking aims to be tipid (inexpensive), the main goal is for me to acquire kitchen skills. You don’t need fancy equipment and a lot of time. I only have one pan and one stew pot and two hours to cook two days of food supply, that includes prep time, while I do the laundry, browse Facebook, watch reruns of my favorite series and Jimmy Fallon, etc. Tsaka nakakahiya kasi sa landlady matagal sa kusina. It’s best to learn cooking by starting off with someone else’s recipes. But while mothers know best, you can also twist recipes to make it your own, or for the sake of your cravings or sige na nga - dietary needs. Pero, kung susuway ka, edi sarapan mo na rin! So here goes!
CHICKEN OATS CALDO – A LESS BORING OATMEAL DISH, A HEALTHIER ARROZ CALDO
DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY: Easy. It will be harder to explain to your mom why you might want to skip rice; she might insist that you don’t need to lose weight to be loved. Or, maybe she wants you to cut carbs too, so it’s a win-win! COUNTER: Slice chicken breasts. Peel ginger with the edge of a spoon. It’s easier. Slice ginger into thick sticks. Half the head of garlic will be minced, the other half crushed and fried for toppings. Melt chicken cube in a bowl of hot water and whisk. Chop spring onions or green onions - puwede mong gawing code name sa dalawang bagay na napupusuan mo. Kesyo career to, kesyo pag-ibig, kesyo sapatos. Oh my god, onion choices! Be happy if life gives you onion choices! Spring onions and scallions or green onions are interchangeable kasi. Remember this and say it habang naglalakad ka sa grocery at nakatingin sa hanay-hanay na gulay. “Si Spring ay bilog sa dulo, si scallion ay deretso. Si Spring ay bilog sa dulo, si Scallion ay deretso.” Scallion leaves are milder, while spring is more intense. STOVE: A medium-sized non-stick pot will be enough for this. Sabi ng nanay ko, mas masarap daw ang manok kapag sinabay mo na sa pag-gisa ng luya at bawang sa olive oil. Kapag namawis na ito at lumambot, alisin ang manok. Now mix in and sauté the dry rolled oats just enough to cover in oil. Pour in water. Add chicken stock, add salt or fish sauce and swirl everything together nicely in medium heat. Bring
back the chicken, then cover the pot. Let it boil for the oats to cook. Stir occasionally, otherwise it will stick together. Add in some of your chopped green onions for taste, and leave some for garnish later. Oatmeal sucks up the water quickly so you can add a little more water and chicken stock for flavoring again. In a pan, fry garlic until golden and crunchy. Serve with sliced boiled egg, calamansi and crunchy garlic! SKILLS UNLOCKED: Distinguishing between the allium species. Learning the shortcuts to peeling ginger. Replacing something good with something better. From The Practicing Misis Cookbook [No Fiancé Required, Guaranteed Gayuma-Free Recipes] Psicom Publishing Inc., 2016. Available in the Philippines in National Bookstore, FullyBooked and other leading bookstores nationwide. Social Media: @practicingmisis | #practicingmisis | #lukaretcooking

Yes, rela actually, cially when you’re with let’ But s t person.ty spec some espeest, being single can maketheyourighfeel ial. pret be hon Here are 6 reasons why being single rocks 1. You don’t have to worry about someone telling you what to do, or what you cannot do Let’s face it, we do care about our partner’s opinion and even more concerned about how they can sometimes control us. When you’re single, you don’t need to worry about what you need to wear on a night out or what time you should be home. Or if you need to shave your legs and get an appointment at the salon for your waxing treatment. Enjoy the freedom. 2. Enjoying your friends Truth be known, we tend to forget about our friends when we are in a relationship (which is not cool at all). We act like they are some kind of weight that we have to lug around. Being single allows you to focus all the love you have for your friends, and there is nothing wrong with that. Slumber party? Hell yeah! 3. Dating There is always something to look forward to in your first date and frankly, it is quite thrilling. That moment when you meet someone for the first time and get to know their favorite color and why they have 10 cats, is quite exciting. Being single makes you realize whether you want to date someone new every weekend or when you actually want to settle down with someone special. You have the choice. 4. Being able to focus on your career I’ve met quite a few women and they always say that they have no time for relationship’s as they are so focused on their goals and career. I have nothing against being independent and I will illustrado go>46
actually cheer you on for that choice. When were alone we can also focus in building a nest for security. Also, there is nothing more powerful than a woman who is secured and independent. 5. The opportunity to travel - alone I have always seen these articles on how a single woman should travel alone and do some soul searching. I think this is an awesome way to find yourself, meet people and experience different cultures. I would love to actually do this. 6. You know what you really want in life Being single helps you to contemplate and think think things through. It definitely makes you realize what you want and what you don’t want in life and in a relationship. You become a better person and learn
how to appreciate yourself. You definitely will not settle for less and you know your worth. Having said all that, being single can sometimes suck, because at the end of the day, you want someone to cuddle with and tell all your bad jokes and rants to. Luckily, being single does not have to be permanent, and it is just an opportunity prepare yourself for someone whom you will absolutely love to annoy, kiss in the morning and make bad jokes with. Don’t worry. Your knight in shining armor is somewhere out there thinking of meeting the right gal. But while you’re waiting, you can always rock being single.

Exploring Europe behind the wheel
By> Leo Barrameda
spontaneity of a self-drive tour across Europe last November. For 15 days, we passed through towns and cities across 6 countries - Amsterdam, The Hague, Roermond, Düsseldorf, Köln, Stuttgart, Innsbruck, Mittenwald, Florence, San Giminiano, Volterra, Siena, Parma, Lucern, Basel, Bonn, and Copenhagen. ‘Speedo turismo’ doesn’t appeal to me. It’s exhausting, very limiting, and quite expensive. If you have travel buddies that you can bring along, planning a self-drive tour across Europe is a good choice. This option is much cheaper. Needless to say, it’s also exciting, and most of all it’s an absolutely bespoke travel program for you and your crazy friends. To be lost and wander around a foreign city is the norm. Structured tour packages are good, but to be independent tourists open you to a completely different experience. Together with Bobbie Carella, one of my travel buddies, I’ve embraced the
Europe, why not? Countries in Europe are tourist-friendly; going beyond boundaries is as easy as crossing bridges. The culture and tourism offers of neighboring EU countries are worth exploring. The selection of amazing landscapes and diverse activities enable discerning tourists to mix and match to concoct the perfect holiday experience. You’ll find everything in Europe, from culture, to fabulous history, to outstanding nightlife, mouthwatering food, picturesque villages, and the endlessly charming atmosphere. Traditional Tour Packages or Self Drive? For first-timers lone travelers and those with strict schedules, booking a tour packages is ideal. There are options for
flights, visa, transfers, accommodations, and other add-ons. The detailed guided programs and assistance, however convenient, are of course, synonymous to a high price. On the other hand, doing away with the guided tours to be independent explorers instead entails a lot of planning and research. You need to have a clear idea of where you want to go, when, how, and what to do during the trip. The bonus is that there are a lot of opportunities to discover something new, different, and extraordinary. A self-guided tour is all about flexibility and independence. Every decision is yours – where to go, when to stop, what to eat, and where to stay the night. Forget about long bus drives and forcing yourself to adjust to the other tourists – i.e. the late, the diva, and the boring. Pre-departure Arrangements Planning is everything to make self-drive tour as hassle free as possible. Depending on your nationality, check whether visa application is required to enter any of the EU countries. For Filipinos, a tourist visa is needed, relative to the first country of arrival. website to know the requirements, book a schedule, and to understand the application terms and condition. You should get your visa application result within 15 days of submission. Settle accommodation arrangements as soon as visa and flights are ready. If budget is tight, Airbnb is the best option – giving you a choice between room sharing, private rooms, or even renting an entire apartment. The local hosts are also friendly and can give you tips on where to go and what to expect in the city. Alternatively, booking a hotel still remains the classic choice. Booking.com or lastminute.com provide good options from 3-star establishments to high-end, with flexible cancellation policies. Hotel rates are fluctuating. The earlier you book, the better. Before confirming you accommodation, determine if the location is accessible, near city-center or countryside. Europe boasts amazing roads connecting cities and countries. Driving in Europe is a good choice to make the most out of your trip. Before leaving, apply for an international driving license. In Dubai, application can be done at RTA offices and select driving schools. The permit is usually valid for a year. Pre-book a car rental via their website or you can visit their stands at the airport or major train stations. Popular options are illustrado go>48
Sixt, Europcar, Avis, and Hertz. Compare rates and deals to stay on budget. To guarantee the rental, the driver needs to have a valid credit card. Choose a car that matches your trip. If budget is limited, request a diesel and/or manual car options. The most important consideration for the road trip is the wheels that will carry you from point A to B, and beyond. For self-drive tours, a car with a GPS is a big must. GPS is your new best friend. Most car rental companies provide this as an add-on. To use a pre-downloaded map application in smartphone might not be the best option. Make sure that your phone’s roaming service is activated. Contact or visit your line provider. Anticipate making calls for last minute changes on your accommodation and for SOS. Euro is the currency that is widely accepted among EU countries. You can prepay your accommodation, transfer, and car rental. ATM facilities and debit/credit cards are widely accepted. It is encouraged not to carry a big amount of cash. Have enough money for cabs, transportation, tipping and any shopping you’ll do. Be sure to inform your bank regarding your itinerary so that they won’t consider your overseas spending as fraud. Packing for the trip
Depending on your luggage allowance, smart packing for a week-long trip to Europe is the name of the game. You can’t go wrong if you go for classic neutrals think white, black, denim, and every muted colors in between. Eliminate the neons, sparkles, pastels, and the wild and crazy patterns. They only limit your mixing and matching opportunities. Follow the neutral rule and your outfits will seem limitless. Yes, don’t forget to add some accents depending on the season. Make sure to allot extra space for shopping. A travelling adaptor is also a must-have. You don’t want to miss ‘selfie moments’ just because your battery is dead. En Route to Wanderland After you plot your schedule, the next thing to do is to find interesting things to do in the cities you will be visiting. www. tripadvisor.com is a good resource for this. Furthermore, key European cities have Tourist Info Centers that can be your first pit stop. They have amazing packages and options for tourists. You can book tours onsite, and they are usually affordable. Driving across Europe is an amazing experience, as long as you know how to read road signs and signals. The price of gasoline is a major setback, though. Bring along two to three friends to split the cost. After all, the more the merrier.
Alternatively, you can also try exploring nearby towns and cities via rails. For many
FILIPINO
TRAVELER >
tourists, the pleasure of travelling via Europe’s well-organized rail system is as good as the destination itself. There are no lengthy check-in procedures for train travel and there is no need to go through any security screening. You can simply show up a few minutes before the train leaves, buy a ticket and hop on the train. Tourists will never go hungry during the trip. One of the best aspects of traveling in Europe is the food. With you behind the wheel, there are a lot of great restaurants, cafés and kiosks to choose from. Disclaimer A self-drive tour is not for everyone. If you are not confident to drive, don’t. If you are travelling alone and on strict schedule, it’s better to book a package. If you are not a patient and adventure-seeker, don’t choose this as an option. My best memories from our trip are when we went off on mountains roads to remote towns and villages and got to see places that I’ve never heard about. Europe is full of surprises, quirks and overlooked spots if you take the chance to explore the beyond the usual tourist haunts. Some people like to wander at will, discovering new places every day. Some enjoy trips without worrying about strict itineraries. And then other people like a trip where they do not need to drive. It is all a matter of choice. Lastly, be prepared to fall in love with travelling. Keep exploring and happy driving!

Episode 1: “Paging all passenger of Emirates Airline EK 333 bound for Dubai. The boarding gate will close in ten minutes.” Oh…my…goh-leeee….Dizzizt! In a few minutes, my dreams will about to be true! I will finally ride an airplane – a real one – not like the one in the perya that goes around 360 degrees Celsius Fahrenheit……. So, wearing my ukay-ukay top, my Scottish-inspired skirt, scarf, beret (very French, huh?) and black knee-high socks with sandals (I wanted boots, but my sister said I’d look like an Equistinarian without a horse!), I sashayed down to departure, I have to look like a real high class tourist – so the immigration will be convinced, since I only have a Visit Visa. The more I look like fashion model, the less they harass me – and ask silly questions. Speaking of silly questions, here’s my question and answer portion at the immigration of NAIA; after seeing my passport, they wanted another ID, so I gave my Globe Gentext card. But it says that my name is Annie B. – yes, just plain Annie B. becoz that’s how everyone call me, becoz I love disco-ing and gimmick-
“Jet Set”
ing. You know, like Annie Batungbakal? Nora Aunor? Jolina Magdangal? Halleer! And it also comes from my family name Batobalani – as in Batobal-ANNIE? Getsung mo? But they ask if my passport is fake. “Sir, my real name is Daffodil Athena Calumpong Batobalani. Athena, for the Greek goddess of wisdom, and Daffodil, latin name: Narcissus Pseudo narcissus – because my mother said I was narcissistic even as an infant. “(Haaayyyy…) “Who is this Floricel Calumpong that is sponsoring you?” Ano ‘to – Family Feud???!!! “She is my cousin, sir. She is into the transportation industry. I am going to stay with her during my vacation in Dubai.”
“Last call for passenger of Emirates Airlines EK 333…” Oh noooo!!!! “Sir, I have to go now, I will miss my flight.” “Ok, you may go.” Thank Gooooodddd!!! I finally arrived at the gate, about to make my grand entrance, when I noticed that my foundation melted with my sweat! I quickly wiped off the smudges with Gatsby Oil Control Film Strips. Remember Annie,
Oilyness is next to ugliness – no, Voila! Fresh as a Ricky Reyes model!!! Ganda na uli ang lola nyo!!! I put on my Jackie O sunglasses. “Oooo….kaya nyo ba yan?” I was seated beside two Pinoys. One looked like April Boy Regino complete with stone washed maong jacket, bull cap and huge, glittering bling-blings, the other like John Regala. They barely spoke but kept on staring at me all the time. Well, I can’t help it if they find me attractive, noh?! Then all of a sudden, the rest of the passengers were also staring at me. “Ma’am, the seat belt sign is on, please fasten your seat belt. We’re taking off in a few seconds…”, the stewardess told me. “What seat belt? I’m afraid my seat has no belt. Maybe you need to transfer me….” I snapped back. “Ma’am, you’re sitting on your seatbelt. Please fasten them now!” “Aaahh…so that’s what’s scratching my T-back underwear all this time – the seat belt!” The plane started to move…Dizzizt!!! In a few hours, everything will change and my new life as a jetsetter will finally take place. Watch out, Dubai – here homes Annie B!

By> Kristine Abante – Dubai PINOYS RULE UAE JAZZ-SWING CIRCUIT
The UAE is always a fertile ground for Filipino musicians drawing in a lot of great talents from the Philippines, but aside from the usual R&B, pop and rock fare, you will also find Filipino musicians making waves in the jazz and funk niche. Three outstanding working musicians Lakshmi Ramirez, Eric Bernabe (Guitar/Banjo) and Janele Bernardo (drums), form half of the 6-man group The Swing Revue – a favorite staple in the Dubai jazz circuit. Lakshmi Ramirez drives the band with his energetic double bass and sousaphone, while Eric adds the soul with his guitar/ banjo, and Janele keep the beat up with his prolific drum skills honed by playing punk and rockabilly in the Manila underground. Creating a unique musical fusion with bandmates from Armenia, Australia and the UK, The Swing Revue has been drawing in audiences from across the UAE with their repertoire of swing tunes, versatile instrumentation, energy and expression on stage. Mixing well-loved and lesser-known jazz melodies from the 20s through to the 50s with original compositions, The Swing Revue has developed an organic reflection of the swing era ambience. With an already impressive list of high-end clients including French fashion house ‘Lanvin’, the famous Ibiza venue now in Dubai ‘Pacha’ and the Dubai World Cup, to name but a few, The Swing Revue continue to build their reputation in the UAE and the rest of the GCC. The Swing Revue plays their boogie woogie music chanelling artists such as Ray Charles, Louis Prima, and the Andrews Sisters live every Wednesday at Jazz Pizza Express, and in the company of swing dance group Lindy Hop Dubai. Classic love song “Bakit ‘Di Totohanin” by singer Carol Banawa was used in a scene from American supernatural drama television series “The Vampire Diaries.” The 716th episode of the series featured a conversation between Valerie and Stefan, played by Elizabeth Blackmoore and Paul Wesley, with the song playing in the background. In an Instagram post, Carol expressed her gratitude to the makers of the series and the supporters of original Filipino music. “They have aired it already! #thevampirediaries used my song in one of the scenes for the episode 716. It was a scene between Stefan and Valerie. They used, ‘BAKIT DI TOTOHANIN.’ I am in disbelief right now but very grateful! Will be watching it tonight!” she said. Who Got #Hugot? Which hugotero or hugotera are you? B y > A b y Ya p
“Kailangan pa bang sagutin?” With lovely Ness running for a Senate seat, we’re pretty sure everyone has #Hugot — born out of bitterness, anger, frustration, etc.— without reservations. Only the depth of these bottled up emotions a.k.a. lalim ng pinaghuhugutan varies. Which group of celebrated hugoteros and hugoteras do you belong to? Go, embrace the feels! 1. The Sawi “Where do broken hearts go?” That’s the stinging #HugotQuestion for this Lonely Folks Club. Members range from men and women who’ve been left by once their significant others, now known as shameless others to those who’ve failed miserably to look for greener pastures that the only option left is to exit to Kish Island…yet again. Their pain is too great that it just brings about more questions. Can they find their way back into love in someone else’s arms? Or back home to ‘Pinas in case they decide that enough is enough? 2. The Seen-zoned “Bute pa ang multo, nagpaparamdam.” Anyone who enjoys being haunted by ghosts must be desperately seeking attention (and is creepy). But who can blame them for this #HugotTampururotLine? This troupe generally consists of victims of unrequited love and unreplied messages. Of being smilingly told “Let’s just be friends.” by
The One they’ve long dreamt of having kids with. Of getting “Seen” notifications in their FB messages without receiving any replies ever, grrr! Ouch, di ba? Truth be told, their inconspicuousness is more potent than Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak. 3. The Stuck “May forever.” This is the #HugotClaim of people who choose to wait relentlessly. Some find it hard to move on from their past love, still clinging on to vows of togetherness even after years have passed. And there are many whose vehicles are unable to move—damn, not even an inch— helplessly caught in a traffic mess every day of their lives. As to who is having it worse is debatable. One thing is certain, though. This tribe deserves a monument in Luneta for being martyrs in romance and on the road.
5. The Senti “Maglaro tayo ng kahit ano, huwag lang taguan. Kasi someone like you is hard to find.” Boom, tagos to the bones! This is a #HugotQuote example of those who are eternally in love can (annoyingly) come up with. After all, they’re the hopeless romantics and love fools in our midst whose only goal in life is to search for their soul mates—online or offline. Whether we like or loathe it, the craziness of the Inlababos Inc. is what makes the world go round.
4. The Solitary “What matters most is that we loved at all,” says the #HugotSong of this band of single ladies and gentlemen who play it solo for reasons only they know. They’re the NBSB (No Bae Since Birth), the ABMNB (Always the Bride’s Maid/Best Man, Never the Bride/Bridegroom), and those who purposely or accidentally miss the last trip down the wedding aisle. To be in a relationship is what most of them pray for just so they can finally relate to their theme song. Plus, it would be nice to call someone “hubby” or “wifey.”

Lessons from a Crazy Cat Lady By> Kristine Abante – Dubai
I read a status on social media recently that asks “When was the last time you said I love you?” so I tried hard to remember the last time I said those three words when I really truly meant it.
we feel guilty for not sleeping. Cats have no issues about sleeping—they will lay down whenever they feel like as much they can. Sleep, rest well and dream—no matter what that song of Fiona Apple says.
Of course there was my mom, my dad and my grandma, but as they say, “family doesn’t count”, so then, there was only one boy to whom I said “I love you” recently when I truly meant it. In fact, I said it to him often. It went more like “I love you, I love you forever.” He was probably cringing from the cheesiness most of the time, but I made sure that he knew it. His name is Yuki, and he is my late great beloved cat.
3. Animals have feelings too.
You can call me crazy ‘ailurophile’, but sometimes the most heartbreaking things in life are the ones that teach us the most important lessons. Yuki thought me a lot about life (and death) that I feel I’m just beginning to understand the real reason why I am alive. Here are top 5 things I learned from my Cat: 1. Stay curious.
To a cat, everything is interesting; the sunlight that hits the window, the chirping birds outside, the fresh smell of the laundry, the busy kitchen counter, and the things that you do in the bathroom every morning. They would investigate everything with uncontrollable curiosity and this make up most of their day. I have learned the secret to a good life, is to stay curious. The feeling that we exhibit slightest interest in things that goes on in our daily lives and the way that a cat do, we would be happier, or at the very least, be contented. 2. Sleep as much as you can.
As a Filipino kid in the 80s, we have this mandatory ‘siesta’ imposed by our elders. We feel like sleeping keeps us away from enjoying the time watching TV or playing with friends. As we get older, responsibilities (and watching Netflix) keep us up every day until midnight and if we do,

This is probably the most important lesson I have learned from Yuki that the world still needs to learn. Beyond all the adoration for cute cats and dogs, I think that one needs to really live with animals to understand that like us, they have feelings; and cats are the greatest at teaching you that they are not simply there for your own pleasure. They have their own lives as well, and you are privilege to be part of it, as much as they are privilege to be part of yours. Perhaps, once we get to a point of understanding that we all live for each other as humans and animals for the nature; we will be closer to that elusive world peace. 4. Your presence is enough.
There is a secret language between lovers and friends that cannot be defined by syntax—that “silence is the loudest sound.” You don’t have to say anything to show that someone is important to you. Finding the time to be there for them especially when they need you is more than enough. 5. Love is forever.
“Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” People who have experienced this gained a better perspective of true love. It is the lesson in every Shakespeare tragedy and in every crushing soul, there is an Adele song. In the case of my beloved cat, I might have lost him in the physical sense, but our memories will last for a lifetime. Yuki’s death only means that, (in my mind and in my heart) he will follow me everywhere; and the lessons of being a crazy cat lady will stay with me forever. The Vice Presidential Debate Leni’s closing statement. Chiz’s monotonous voice. Suntukan sa UST. Other highs and lows but really the vice presidential debate brought a lot of guffaws from the people in cyberspace. Take for instance Escudero’s speaking style which can be used in any balagtasan competition as some deemed. Or how about Binay booing Trillanes backstage and as some netizens have observed, with a bit of lightning can maybe “brighten” up his demeanor?
A bike shop and a man-cave A coffee shop and a bike shop rolled into one. Out brews Maximus Athlete’s Coffee Shop owned by triathlete Andy Leuterio and his wife Sheryll which specializes in selling high-end bicycles such as Lynskey (touted as the Rolls-Royce of bicycles), Polar and Brooks, Oakley and Garmin, Newton Running, and children’s bicycles, and other equipment for the athlete such as braces, glasses, helmets, knee pads, among others. A full bike service area is at hand to render any type of service – whether that be giving your bicycle a complete overhaul or creating one from scratch. When it comes to the beverages, the coffee comes off as not too strong or
Of course there are also the more sensible observations. Some say the debate is a lot more interesting and better than the presidential ones probably because the platforms and programs of each candidate are laid out more clearly. Not to be outdone are the moderators of the event, Pia Hontiveros and Pinky Webb, who asked the right questions at the right time and interfered when they had to. Overall the vice presidential debate is one for the books and it is up to the people who to vote for. Listen. Scrutinize. Study. And vote!
too weak, not too sweet or too bitter. With a little bit of syrup, this essential favourite can lift up anyone’s gloomy day. Those who suffer from migraines or headaches can also pick up a thing or two when they take a sip - the balance is just right and perfect. Heck they can even blend coffee beans right in front of your face! That’s right, Maximus offers coffee appreciation for guests and visitors – the staff can show you how they do things around here. As for the other specialties, try the grilled sandwiches which bring that crispiness and crunchiness right to the heart of your palate. The pastas are to die for as well. Truly a gastronomic delight!
His New Aura He is the latest addition to Coco Martin’s Ang Probinsiyano. Mcneal Briguela whose screen name is Boy Aura because of his viral video that showed him expanding his acting thespian skills, plays the role of Mac Mac who came to wreak havoc on Onyok’s life and at the same time, breeds secret feelings for Cardo (Martin). The role is quite suited for the little stalwart as he shifts from being manly to effeminate when the sequence calls for it.
The internet sensation also appeared on ASAP and has since earned thousands of followers because of his comedic acting and timing.
