TALKING TOURISM Marketing The Philippines as a Travel Destination By > Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes
“It’s been Asia’s best kept secret,” he tells me. And I silently wonder back:” Yes, a secret we’ve long been whispering to the whole world for so long.”I looked away, pondering on the loud musings of a “concerned” Philippines fan, the ails of our tourism industry reasserting itself on my consciousness at the heels of Dubai’s famed Annual Investment Meeting and the Arabian Travel Market. It’s always more fun and it does seem that we’re having fun watching our ASEAN neighbors’ tourism statistics skyrocket way past ours. In our huddles with officials from the TIEZA or the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, an agency whose mission is to lure global investors to our local tourism infrastructure, we decried the dearth in world-class facilities in the Philippines that could accommodate the waves of humanity who believe in the country as a top-notch tourism destination.
of Thailand or Thaif” like everyone was looking forward to its beaches – its perpetual sun. Then newly-constructed West End Mall adjacent to Budapest’s NyugatiPalyaudvar or West Train Station and other malls across the city had food stalls that featured Thai cuisine. Extremely popular were noodles they called Thai piritotteszta, which my Thai colleagues said did not remotely resemble Pad Thai, but for some reason, these food establishments baptized it Thai for marketing’s sake.
Southeast Asia lures millions of tourists with their famed tourism strategy and arsenal of glossy attractions. Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia fly in some 20 – 25 million visitors per year while we welcome some 5 million tourists annually. No wonder we’re called a secret.
In contrast, every time I met a local, they most often did not know where the Philippines was, what our products were, or what the Filipino could contribute to the world much less even thought of ever visiting the Philippines. I argued that maybe it was because it was barely a decade since the Iron Curtain was lifted and their reintroduction to the rest of the world was still in its infant stages. But that would not explain why
Some 20 years ago, as a young foreign service officer in Central Europe, I was amazed by how local Hungarians knew

Thailand and Indonesia were immensely popular. This may have incited me to be fiercely competitive about marketing the Philippines and anything Filipino, knowing deep inside that the rest of the world simply has to see what we can offer and they’ll then realize what it is they’ve missed out thus far. Obviously, they’ve done something right. There is so much we have to learn from our Thai brothers about marketing and branding the country. Our neighbors get it. Malaysia’s Truly Asia tag hogged precious CNN airtime and I recall exchanging notes with Tourism folks back in Europe about how it all boils down to budget and finances. Clearly, they have outspent us in all aspects – tourism flyers, liaisons with local travel agencies, promotional capability, you name it. Their campaigns lord over TV, radio, print, and even on the web and social media and we all know that those cost a ton of money but when most

Dubai to the Philippines, not too many fly to our famed beaches and stunning sunsets from or through Dubai. That, folks, is a travesty that must be corrected.
But for us in the diplomatic service, what exactly does marketing the country entail? Often, this boils down to participation in tourism fairs; local exhibits; or cultural presentations which feature native music, art, and dance. These endeavors naturally feed on appropriate funding but we’ve always been expected to come up with the grandest and most alluring pavilion or booth using the least amount of finances, you know the proverbial making do with what little one has. And when the others have outspent and outmaneuvered you, you reboot and re-strategize to find ways.
At a recent Filipino community event in Sharjah, I spoke of how we as a people should synergize our efforts at promoting our dear country. It was Philippine cultural day and obviously the crowd of around a thousand was mostly Filipino, a few local Emirati government officials, some technical crew were South Asians. How superb it would have been if we were able to entice many more of the UAE’s 200 ethnicities to our cultural events, never mind if the language would make it a little inconvenient. Their warm embrace of our songs, dances, music, paintings, food, fashion, and our innate creativity would do much more than any pavilion or booths at those international tourism exhibits.
The Philippine Embassies and Consulates General in Europe and in America are intensely pro-active as far as tourism promotion is concerned. I have never been posted to the Asia-Pacific but I would imagine the presence of Tourism Attachés there would make marketing campaigns as vigorous and intense as our posts in Europe and America. Thus as a result, the top sources of our tourist arrivals are from Northeast Asia, the US, Australia, Canada, the UK, and Singapore. Tourism arrivals from this side of the earth, contrastingly, are scant and measly. Notwithstanding Dubai’s role as the international aviation hub of the world, including quite a number of flights from
read many business articles providing samples of both and it’s sad where many categorized our tourism promotion campaigns. We will most probably never outdo the efforts of our neighbors but in our perennial lament of the lack of finances to come up with a spirited tourism strategy, there can be no way the rest of the world could beat a marketing campaign that is focused solely on the Filipino. We need the whole world to fall in love with us and mark my word, they will come.
In my 22 months in the gem of the Middle East and in the years I spent in Europe and America, I’ve figured that when others are interested in us as a people, they become convinced that the place where it all began couldn’t be so bad. In fact, it should make them feel compelled to visit the birthplace of the Filipino spirit. When they believe in the uniqueness of what we are as a people, seeing the place where our soul mushroomed should be worth the long-haul flight to the edge of Asia. Great marketing - bad product and weak marketing – amazing product, I’ve

ri Lanka is one of the largest producers of tea in the world. They were colonized by the British before and their country was called Ceylon. Tea was introduced to the country by the British who called the country “Ceylon”. It’s a 4 hrs flight with Emirates Airlines. There are other flights too such as Sri Lankan Airlines, Fly dubai and others. Bandaranaike International Airport (also known as Colombo International Airport and Katunayake International Airport) is the main international airport serving Sri Lanka.

Kandy Kandy is a large city in central Sri Lanka. The city is surrounded by mountains, which are home to tea plantations and rainforest. In the heart of the city is the scenic Bogambara Lake where people love to stroll. Kandy is a religious city and known for sacred Buddhist sites, including the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) shrine. We have witnessed the Grand Esala Perahera annual procession. We stayed in Earl’s Regent Hotel. Situated in a hill surrounded by hills and lush greenery. Nestled within the lush green surroundings, showcasing the heritage Kandy.

The orphanage cares for almost 100 elephants, many of whom were either orphaned or injured in the wild. We witnessed the elephants being led to the river for a bath. We rode an elephant named Raja. We also visited the Botanical Gardens to see patches of herbs and spices We got to visit Ranweli Spice and Herbal Garden. I saw how spices and herbs like turmeric, pepper corns, cloves, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa, aloe vera, etc. are grown in their natural and organic environment.

Nuwara Eliya Nuwara Eliya is a city in the tea country hills of central Sri Lanka, called by tourists as “Little England.” We visited Pedro Tea Estate, about 3.5km east of Nuwara Eliya on the way to Kandapola and took a half-hour guided tour of the factory. Nuwara Eliya is a city on the hill, often called city of lights. It’s cold out there at 11 deg centigrade when we visited. It was raining during nights, but the weather was fair.
I loved and enjoyed New Zealand Farms in Nuwara Eliya. This farm is located at Ambewela which is a few Km away from Nuwara Eliya. The New Zealand Farm is a part of the Ambewela Farm which are both dairy farms. New Zealand Farm is located only 3-4 Km away from Ambewela Farm, and it produces fresh milk and cheese.
Bentota We visited the resort town on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast called Bentota. We stayed in a hotel along Bentota Beach which stretches north, a sandy strip known as Paradise Island.
Bentota River Boat Safaris start at the last section of the broad River Bentota (Bentota lagoon), and cruises inland. Bentota Lagoon is scattered with small islands, natural landscapes, and tangled mangrove swamps. The boat men will meander through the islets and mangrove swamps located haphazardly on the river. It is mysterious and beautiful at once, as you cruise through shaded waters beneath huge roots. The longer you need to explore, the further upriver you want to cruise, the more unspoilt the scenery becomes. It’s a 2 and a half hours boat trip. Along the boat cruise, you’ll get to visit a small cinnamon factory and fish spa. The cost of this tour ranges from 3000 to 4000 Sri Lankan rupees, which is around AED75 to 100. We also paid a visit to The Turtle Hatchery Project at Bentota Beach. A visit to the turtle hatchery is a must for nature lovers and environmentalists. TIPS • Dress appropriately and modestly. I wore light track suits and my usual shayla for my hair. Others wear walking shorts and summer tops. Others wear jeans and t-shirt. • Bring an insect repellant, creams, lotion or spray. There are lot of mosquitoes. • Expenses depend on the preference of the traveler.I saw some tourists staying in travel lodges, bed and breakfast accommodations, from 1 star to 5 star Hotels. Hotel fees are as low as 75 AED to 500 and above • Food is very cheap. They use coconut mainly in their food. Their food is a lot similar to Indian food. • Mode of transportation include buses, train, boat and tuk tuk. Some of the places have 2-way zig zag highways. It’s bit scary but you’ll get used to it.

Travel Trade Secrets from the Experts By> Nikka Sarthou

T.S. Eliot once said that, “The journey, not the arrival matters.” Though the destination may be the main attraction, part of the appeal of traveling comes from the journey itself — from packing your suitcase to actually being in transit. Before you head for some summer fun, consider these helpful travel tips from seasoned travelers. travel documents). I lay down everything on my bed first before organizing them inside my luggage. This way, it’s easier to double check everything,” shares DJ de Dios, an international Cabin Crew who has been flying with a major airline for six years now. “I use packing cubes and follow the Capsule Formula – you basically roll your clothes into a capsule and load them up in packing cubes. No fuss, no mess. I also choose clothes and items, which are multi-purpose like a sarong that I can use as a scarf, as a blanket, and as a beach cover-up. A flight attendant friend of mine can even turn hers into a summer dress.”
C a p s u l e s a n d C u b e s : Ho w t o Tr a v e l L i g h t Airline regulations changing the maximum luggage allowance has become a challenge for travelers to make everything fit, especially for Filipinos who are used to traveling with full balikbayan boxes. We should all take cue from flight attendants who have mastered the art of packing.
“When I started flying, I made a list of things that I’ll need when traveling, which I divided into four major categories — toiletries, clothes, entertainment, and travel essentials (i.e.

As an international cabin crew, he flies to different places abroad and brings with him multi-purpose pieces that are versatile enough for traveling to areas with varying climates. He recently discovered thermal underwear. “I got mine from Japan and it doesn’t take up any luggage space. Trust me, it can take your wardrobe from spring-summer to fall-winter in a jiffy.” O n t h e O f f - B e a t : Ho w t o Tr a v e l t o E x o t i c P l a c e s There are travelers who are drawn by exotic destinations, which may not be used to having tourists or would require more sensitivity towards their culture. “I do an initial research online on the do’s and don’ts. with local tourism offices,” shares Edgar Alan Zeta-Yap, a Travel Journalist who maintains a website called www.eazytraveler.com. Zeta-Yap’s wandering shoes have also taken him to Kalinga, Maguindanao and Tawi-Tawi in the Philippines and to Myanmar, Indonesia, and India. When traveling to such places, he suggests to, “Be healthy. Keep yourself hydrated with water and boost your immunity by taking vitamins daily. It’s tough getting sick in far-flung places. But at the same time, don’t loose your sense of adventure. Be spontaneous and learn to break your itinerary when an opportunity to discover something new arises.” O n a S h o e s t r i n g : Ho w t o Tr a v e l o n a B u d g e t Traveling is an indulgence, but it has become more affordable these days with the advent of the Internet and budget airlines. In fact, you can be your own travel agent and book your flight and accommodations online. Simply search the Web for discounted fares to get the best deal, or follow the social network sites of airlines to get early updates on such promotions. Be in the know because when traveling on a shoestring, as you need to err on the side of practicality.
W h e n Yo u Wa n t t o b e “p i c t u r e s q u e” : Ho w t o Tr a v e l i n S t y l e Looking good while traveling is a must since you’ll be representing your country, and at the same time, it is characteristic of the Filipino to want to photograph well. According to Ana Kalaw, a stylist, travel blogger and former fashion and beauty editor, “I rarely travel light — I’ve already accepted that — but I do pack with intent. I already know what to wear on which day and for which occasion. I choose pieces that can be worn multiple ways and a multiple number of times.”
She believes in sticking to neutral colors and minimalist styles for clothing and to just add color and embellishment with accessories such as beaded sandals, colorful pendants, huge cocktail rings, and boldly colored scarves. “Don’t use travel as an excuse to wear just t-shirts, jeans and shapeless tops. Instead, go for basic with a twist: a sheer button-down shirt that can be worn over colorful tank tops, colored jeans, cropped jackets that can be worn over jeans or a flowy dress.” “Never sacrifice comfort. Don’t kid yourself into wearing heels when you know you’ll be walking from one of Paris’ arondissement to the next. Style and comfort do mix. Think breezy pants that make your frame look longer, colorful caftans that can go from beach to lounge, leggings, cotton scoop-neck tees.” For Ana, every fashionista traveler must have lightweight knits, ballerina flats, oversized sunglasses, bright-colored lipstick, and lightweight boxy or tailored jacket that can be worn over shorts, jeans, or a dress.

If you are any fan of Game of Thrones, you would know (and probably also dreading the fact) that we are entering the end game. All those years of plotting and war and betrayal and scandal are all coming to a magnificent conclusion. We have two seasons left, but before we bid adieu to this amazing feat of television, you might want to consider reading the books. It’s a known fact that the screen adaptation could never really match the power of its book form, and in the case of the Game Of Thrones mythology, it is most certainly true. HERSCHEL BACKPACK

KIEHL’S MIDNIGHT RECOVERY EYE CK ONE
90’s fashion is experiencing quite the revival. And when it comes to olfactory style, you can’t get any more 90’s than CK One. Released in 1994, CK One was a big hit amongst the fragrance aficionados, what with its vibrant fruity top notes mixed with spicy, musky undertones. What made it even more amazing was that it was marketed to both men AND women. That kind of androgyny is hard to capture in a scent. Calvin Klein did. And the world is all the better for it. Now get to spritzin’!

MONEY

Make money. Maintain that money. Money pa more!
Protect your money while travelling By> Francisco J Colayco
Vacation is for relaxing and not worrying. But the reality is that you need money to enjoy your vacation unless you are spending it at home. Chances are you carry the same purse with your ID, ATM and credit cards kept in the same place. Keep your loose cash (both paper and coins) separate in a smaller light purse so that you don’t have to open your entire wallet each time you need cash thus exposing your cards. HOW SAFE IS YOUR VACATION AREA
Think in detail of the places you are going to, particularly the transportation, lodging and eating facilities. Have a budget focusing on exactly how much cash you should bring. Check if there are ATM machines available to further lessen your actual cash on hand. Bring a credit card and if you have more than one, just take one or at most two cards for safety. SAFETY TIPS WHETHER AT HOME OR TRAVELLING
Have a copy of your important documents in a separate safe place that you can refer to if necessary. This includes your Passport, ID, SS, Driver’s License and other similar important documents. Also copy all your credit cards and other discount cards back and forth on one sheet, again for reference.
different parts for storage in your home. This is especially true if you live with others and househelp. Do not tempt them. Try to divide the money into different compartments within your handbag. You may have a better chance of not losing all your cash to theft in case your handbag gets stolen by keeping a money bag inside your clothes. At the end of each day, review your purchases especially those made with a credit card. Remember the cut-off date and the due date fixed for your credit card. The cut-off date is based on your date of purchase. If you purchase right after your cut-off date, you can wait until the next cycle of your due date. File your credit card receipts carefully and keep tab of the total amounts and due date. If you will still be away on due date, make sure you make arrangements for payment. Again, you do not want to add to your stress after your vacation dealing with your card company after. As always, you should be focused when you use the ATM card. Check the machine you are using to make sure it is not a fake one and look around you for privacy before using it.
Bring a copy of your health insurance and leave another copy of your important documents and your itinerary with your family.
Keep your contact numbers for your bank, your credit cards and your hotel in your phone in case of an emergency.
Keep most of your money in the bank but whatever cash you have divide into
Take extra precaution when you know you will be in a crowded area. Never use a
backpack unless you do not put anything of monetary value in it. Never lay your bag on the floor beside you. Do not assume that your belongings are safe because your entire group is around. This is particularly true in a crowded space. You will be surprised at how thieves work in a coordinated team. They will create all kinds of diversion to distract all and thus easily steal your possessions. If your bag is always under your arm and not swinging around, they may look for someone else to prey on. CHECK BEFORE AND AFTER
Whatever lodging or eating place or even vehicle your enter, be aware of your surroundings. In a restaurant, choose the safest place for your purse or bag. In a vehicle, put your bag with your money always on your lap. In a hotel room or sleeping area, understand what is included in your room rate, especially if there is a bar provided. Use the hotel safekeeping facilities but put your own safeguards for whatever you leave so you know if anything has been tampered with. Remember to give every place you leave a careful look-through including closets, cabinets, drawers. In a vehicle or restaurant, do not assume that what you are carrying is the only article you have with you. Always still look at where you were seating. Many times, a shopping bag is left behind.

EISEN BERNARDO Illustrator-LOS BANOS, LAGUNA My Art I’m a graphic designer and a children’s book illustrator. But I can say that my most recognizable work is my cover art and classical painting mash-up series.
I’m fond of homage, similarities, and references in movies, music, and other art forms. I compare Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud with Marvin Gaye’s Lets Get it on. I love spotting movie scenes that were inspired by classical artworks (e.g. House By The Railroad by Edward Hopper and Hitchcock’s Psycho, Andrew Wyeth’s Christina’s World and Terrence Malick’s Days of Heaven, Escher and Inception, etc). Like my collage series, I just felt that magazine and album covers (like other contemporary artforms) were inspired directly (and/or indirectly) by classical paintings. The similarities and references can be observed. I just really wanted to compare and contrast modern and classical aesthetics. In 2009, I created my first “Mag+Art” for FHM Philippines as fan art. Surprisingly, they featured my works in the “Incoming Art” section of their anniversary issue. In 2014, I was revisiting my works to get inspiration for a new online project, and I saw what I did for FHM. I tried to do the Mag+Art concept again, this time, using international magazine covers. After posting them online, the work became viral. I did follow up projects such as: Logo+Art (corporate logos), Criterion+Art (Criterion DVD covers), and Album+Art (album covers). My Process I’m a pop culture (celebrity, movie, music) fan, so more or less I’m exposed to a lot of magazine and album covers. So most of the time, I identify the covers first. Also, I love classical paintings, so I’m familiar with lots of artworks. So, I do a mental matching of the album covers and the paintings. However, when I do actual implementation in Photoshop, it is like I’m assembling a jigsaw puzzle. It’s trial illustrado go>24
and error. Sometimes, my instinct/mental matching is correct. But when they don’t fit, I need to do a lot of research online to look for a matching artwork. Most of the time, the pieces posted in my Instagram are just product of beautiful accidents. All of them are unplanned and I’m always surprised with the output. It is really a fun activity. It tests my knowledge of the classical arts (visual, literature) and popular culture (music, showbiz/celebrities). I can say that I’m the first digital artist to combine cover arts (magazine, dvd, album) and classical paintings. It became viral because the idea of the collage is very simple. It is very easy (but finding the perfect match, visually and conceptually, is challenging. Anyone can do it, but no one thought of it. My Journey Thus Far My collage series was featured in more than 1,000 online articles in more than 30 countries. Featured in fashion and lifestyle magazine websites such as Andy Warhol’s Interview Germany, GQ Italia, Madame Germany, Cosmopolitan US and France, Paper, Grazia, Rollingstone Italia and Brazil, and Complex. Also reported in news, arts and entertainment websites like Yahoo!, DailyMail UK, The Telegraph, HuffingtonPost, Buzzfeed, MTV, Art Nouveau, Mic, ChinaDaily, Elite Daily, Distractify, DesignTaxi, BoredPanda, My Modern Met, and Visual News. The project became viral in various social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.
Featured in international magazines such as Beaux Arts Magazine October 2014 and June 2015, Inked Magazine Art Issue 2014, Gym Class Magazine Issue 12, Playboy US January/February 2015, Playboy South Africa March 2015, Le Magazine Cineplex March/April 2015, Soura Magazine Dubai Issue 38, Blush Magazine anniversary issue 2015, and in WIJET’s in-flight magazine Singularity Issue No. 3 and Ukraine International Airlines’ Panorama Magazine Art Voyage issue February 2017.
One of myMag+Art collages (Taylor Swift’s Time Magazine November 2014 cover and Guido Reni’s The Rape of Europa painting) is included in Phaidon’s latest edition of A Smile in the Mind - Witty Thinking in Graphic Design. The book features the work of the most prominent designers from across the globe. Exhibited at the Sining Makiling Gallery, University of the Philippines Los Baños and at the KultKolector, an art gallery and bar in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2016, some of my Mag+Art and Album+Art collages became part of the permanent display in RistoranteAranda in Madrid, Spain. My Album+Artinstagram account is nominated in The Webby Awards (Social Music Category). The recognition is given by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. My Advice To Fellow Artists I don’t have formal training as an artist, I don’t have a degree in fine arts. But I think I’m part of the digital era where people can freely express themselves using different art forms. The social media make it easier for someone like me to be noticed. We all know that the art world is an elite arena. But the social media/internet democratized it and made it more accessible for everyone. So, don’t be afraid to share your work online!

VISUAL ARTIST
VIC BAUTISTA
Celebrating Filipino artistry, passion, and cleverness.
My Art I was born and raised in Philippines and finished an architecture degree at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. I worked as an architect for some time in Manila until I migrated in Australia in 2005 where I continued to work for various Australian architectural firms since.
My journey in the visual arts started when I was a young boy seeing my eldest sister paint. Emulating her, I became creative; drawing sporadically whenever I can but I was really never serious. My creative journey took a different turn in 2010, when I finished a soft pastel painting course at the Adelaide Central School of Art in Adelaide in South Australia. It revived my interest in the arts and I started to take it seriously. Between fulfilling my daily duties at work and pursuing a Master in Architecture degree at an Australian university, I devoted my free time to painting.
My Process Basically, I am a multi-media visual artist. I paint using acrylic and pastels but I also do digital illustrations. I like to paint a variety of subjects. Funnily enough, as a way to make long train rides bearable, most of the digital illustrations I have done were conceived and finished during my daily train rides between work and home in Sydney.
I believe that the process of art making is just as important as the final artwork itself.
My Journey Thus Far Over the years, I have done commissioned portraits of people and pets and digital illustrations as well. Earlier on, a pastel portrait I have done of a Philippine actress was bought by herself after a friend of hers saw the painting on Instagram and told her.
My style is still evolving. Like most artists, I started with doing works that are realistic but over the years my style has evolved into a more contemporary modern style with lots of bright happy colours. I want my clients to feel happy when they look at my works so they would be happy as well to hang them on their walls. I currently enjoy finger painting in acrylics. I like the sense of freedom and playfulness I get when I paint using my fingers instead of brushes. I am really excited to explore this new-found artistic expression and find out what I can produce with it. Message to Fellow Artists Personally, I believe that the process of art making is just as important as the final artwork itself. People may buy the final artwork, but they rarely see what the artist goes through in producing such work. As an artist, you have to enjoy that

journey.

menus, and reviewing the schedule of the day before meeting with clients, then it is followed by meetings, workshops, brand activations, etc. Most often, my days are spent consulting with or presenting to clients – either developing a menu or proposing a new strategy. Every once in a while, I have to allot a bit of time in the evening to visit some of our clients on their establishments, just to see how things are running. My message to my fellow Filipinos A lot of people say, “Follow your dreams.” I think successful people don’t actually do that. Instead they fall in love with what they’re doing, which is much more important. You’ve got to find what you love. Your work is going to fill a huge part of your life, and the only way to be truly happy is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking.

But that is just the icing on the tip of the iceberg. May mga ibang staff na kailangang tsugiin for good – either early or forced retirement or termination of contract.

Ang verdict: forced leave ako for two months. Nag back out ako bigla. I’m sorry???
So now I have to design my master plan for my 60 days unemployment period. Huwag na maglukmok sa sorrows and emotions. Harapin ang sarili at kinabukasan. Tandaan: hindi mawawala ang mga bayarin tulad ng credit cards, monthly rent and utilities at everday expenses like food and toiletries. Dapat think positive. May mahahanap din akong raket pansamantala. Huwag magpaka-losyang! Go!
