The circus goes on By Krip Yuson
It’s been a couple of months since we last issued our progressive assessment of the political circus that’s leading up to a critical presidential election next year. A lot has happened since. Official and unofficial declarations have been made and unmade, certifications of candidacy filed for the presidential, vice-presidential and senatorial seats, and indecisiveness continues till the last minute. And yet hardly much is clear. Except that Grace Poe still rules the roost as far as presidential surveys go — in fact, she has stretched her lead over the rest of the field. When President Aquino finally anointed Mar Roxas as the Liberal Party candidate, it was expected to boost his ratings from the lowly single digit he’s suffered from. At the very least, a dramatic spike was predicted. It did happen. Mar Roxas jumped up to double digits. But as realist observers had also foretold, the spike has since plateau-d.

Holiday Blues It’s the best of times; it’s the worst of times… What could be bad about the best and most joyous part of the year – when everybody’s supposedly in high spirits and all around you are the dazzling signs of a holiday in full swing? Being away from your family, perhaps? Being alone, thousands of miles from home where the season is celebrated like no other in the world? Ever heard of “OF (Overseas Filipino) Holiday Blues?”

perfect opportunity to get comfort from each other’s company and have fun in the process. Make an effort to host a Noche Buena for your closest friends. Better yet, make a spin on the usual Christmas Eve gathering by making it into a sleep over. Stay in with your pals for a lazy Christmas Day at home full of laughter and relaxed enjoyment. If you’re not the laid-back type, spend the whole of the 25th visiting friends around town, just like a lot of people do back home.
Bringing home closer Turning to your surrogate family here, however, doesn’t mean forgetting about your people back home. Walang stove, walang heater. We had to sleep wearing our parka jackets. The funny thing was, in our neighborhood, our building was the only one without electricity.” For Agnes Pedrosa Marelid who lived with her family in Stockholm for eight years before moving to Abu Dhabi, her winter ‘aha moment’ – seemed less brutal but equally amusing. She discloses, “On my first day at work, I decided to impress my new colleagues by looking corporate and chic, deciding against my usual ‘lumberjack look’ (thick jacket and clunky boots). I walked out of the house with a long, beige Burberry spring jacket and stiletto heels. Fashion here we go, I said to myself. At the train station, I saw everyone was wearing thick black jackets and I was in my spring jacket looking out of place. When I walked out of the station, I had to wait for the bus. I should just look like I can handle this. The sharp cold darts pierced my toes, until I couldn’t feel them any longer. And guess what? The bus never came! So, I had to walk about 2 km to reach work – with my stiletto heels and numb toes. I felt like someone draped a very cold wet towel over me. It was beyond horrible to suffer so much physical pain. And it hurt even more with my embarrassment from everyone staring at me. I learned my lesson the hard way. You can be fashionable but by all means be weather-
But what do our kababayans have to contend with in the extreme weather and what advice can they give us to survive the bitter cold? Former Dubai resident Chef Mico Galligues who moved to notoriously cold Toronto in 2011 confirms what Pinoys like us who live in much warmer climes already suspect, “Mahirap talaga pag winter. Kahit -40C na, no suspension of classes pa rin. Cold food is less appealing – seryoso. And you need to wear so many layers of clothing and then take them all off. So it’s always wise to take preventive measures just like getting flu shots.” She adds, “Enjoy hot beverages on a whole new level. Even better, cook nilaga and sinigang. It will help warm your core.” 3. ACCLIMATIZE & AVOID WINTER DEPRESSION With the forbidding weather conditions and fewer daylight hours, there is a tendency for people to feel down. Odeth shares, “In winter, we have fewer daylight hours so it’s mostly dark when you leave for work in the morning, and dark again when you get home. It’s very hard to get up in the morning, when the sun rises late. There is also a sudden increase in heating smart!”

So, the tendency is to get homesick.” Combat winter depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) while at the same time getting acclimatized by keeping active. According to Chef Mico, “Go outside frequently. Go skiing, skating or snowboarding. Just keep yourself active. Being outside often helps you to adjust to the weather conditions. Makakatulong din yun to avoid winter depression. Go on shopping kahit window shopping lang, it’s a good way to exercise and keep yourself on the go.” 4. CHANGE OLD HABITS & ALWAYS BE AWARE According to Agnes, “Nobody loves the cold, freezing temperature, not even the Swedes. But if you are living near the Arctic Circle, there is no other way but to adapt. One of the best things that a Pinoy can do to survive, is to change old habits. CAMILLE INFANTE Site Architect – Ghantoot Group Al Shahamah Residences Project Abu Dhabi, UAE My job I was a fresh grad when I started working in UAE, starting out as a Document Controller cum Architect with the Ghantoot Group, based at a project site. I was basically doing the work of a DC for the whole project while assisting the Senior Architect. My workload back then was indescribable. After only a month, our Senior Architect requested that I work fulltime in Architectural Department where I really fit in. Now, I’m the only Architect in the project wherein I work on everything from drafting works to coordination with the Consultant. Our project is a residential compound comprising a total of 20 mid-rise buildings and 44 villas with a 2 hectare basement. As Architect in a project site, I have three main jobs; to review sub-contractors submittals, coordinate, and get approvals from the Consultant. I am primarily responsible for coordinating all the issues and concerns as per site plan. I need to be always vigilant about the execution of the details provided in the Consultant’s drawings as well as ensuring punctuality on submitting shop drawings for approvals. to that our 1-hour travel time. The good thing is that we don’t encounter heavy traffic on the road – thanks to the UAE roads infrastructure, as well as a company pick and drop service. From the start to the end of the project, there is continuous submittal. We could not submit everything altogether as it should be a step-by-step process. The only rest I get is during waiting for the approvals and coffee breaks.
Career advice At the end of the day, your consistency is everything that matters. Like at the end of every project, what they will remember from you is your consistency in trying to solve each problem, your consistency in being a hard-worker, consistency in giving respect, consistency in everything. We can only achieve that consistency by loving our work and making it our passion. Do not just work, rather ‘live it’. I’ve read one statement saying, “If you’re not tired, then you’re not doing it right.” But I live in the other way around. For me, if you’re tired, then you’re not doing it right. We should remember that being tired, being exhausted and being stressed out is a choice. You will never get tired of giving to your loved ones the same as you will not get tired of working if you love your job. If you get tired, there’s something wrong. It’s time to reflect. Love, relaxation and peace of mind are the best gifts you could give to yourself.

FILIPINO PROGRESS AND DIVERSITY AT THE WORK PLACE
It’s What I do the reality of an OFWs life. I used to stay in a Labor Camp at Sonapoor, Al Qusais, together with all the laborers. We used to take a huge bus (without A/C) sometimes and most of the time, the mini bus from the site office to our accommodation. We were given a very minimal salary that can’t even support myself, what more a family of my own in the Philippines. Then I realized that I can’t remain like this for the rest of my career. So, I decided to take the Philippine Board Exam in Architecture held in Abu Dhabi where I passed. This then allowed me to take a great leap in my career. Being a Licensed Architect plus my relevant work experience in the Philippines, I have been given a privilege to be an Interior Designer in a known fit-out company in the emirates. This became my grinding stone, my training ground, my turning point. Two years from there, I took an offer from another company as a Senior Interior Designer. One year down the road, I was promoted to Design Manager of that firm.

I am working as a Design Manager at an Interior Design and Fit-out Company in Dubai, where I lead a team of designers towards greater creativity from project concept, to drawing, to production. As a design manager, I need to assess the strengths and weaknesses of my team, as well as properly disseminate and plan the work load on hand. The environment of a fit-out company is really fast-paced, which is why from time to time, I need to take on some of the task on my own - something which I really enjoy. I am glad that I am able to impart my knowledge with my colleagues and at the same time for me every day is a learning process. I am a typical OFW who dreamed to work Abroad, by God’s grace I was hired by a Huge Construction Company based In Dubai, it was big, everything was big, until I came to Dubai and saw
A cup of coffee kicks off my day. I enjoy my cup of coffee in front of my computer, checking my emails and updating on the deliverables, then comes the planning with the team as to how, when things need to be done and completed. Somewhere along the day, I also have client meetings and site visits. Our favorite day is when we are on a Design-Oriented Project wherein we are able to showcase our creativity. Such things require collaboration and a lot of man-hours. Sometimes we work until the wee hour in the night. As architects/designers we appreciate that, because we do get great concepts at night! Or we could also say that since nobody else is in the office during those times, except for the design team, we are free to do whatever we want to do - like listening to loud music, singing loud and even dancing. I think most artists will understand that all this actually helps us to be creative and keeps us awake during the wee hours.
Career advice We maybe a work-in-progress at the moment, but be still because God is working out something for you. Dreams do come true, but it takes a lot of hard-work, perseverance, trials and all other negativity prior to achieving anything. Nothing that comes fast last forever, we should all take one step at a time and continue stepping forward towards that dream. But nothing will be possible without God. All dreams and plan should all be guided by Him and him alone.

Since 2013, I have been working as a Personal Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer at Al Bustan Centre & Residence, one of the pioneer fullservice hotel apartments in Dubai. My overall role is to organize, prioritize and coordinate all administrative functions to support the Chief Operating Officer as well as liaise with the other departments. It is a key position in a multi-cultural workplace that entails a high level of confidentiality and diplomacy. As a Personal Assistant, it is essential to be on top of things, be wellinformed and organized. We are the front-liners who serve as the “voice” and “face” of the company. This is actually my first job overseas, and first experience working in the hospitality industry. At the onset, I faced some difficulties, however, I challenged myself not just to keep the job but to grow and develop both professionally and personally. At work, I have actively participated in our Staff Welfare Committee in charge of organizing several activities that would be beneficial to our staff members. I have also joined various social groups and attended different events to build a strong network. As an ILLUSTRADO 24

Throughout the day, I handle my boss’ appointments, coordinate with different departments, prepare memos, letters, and emails and facilitate the signing of documents. I ensure that I always provide efficient support to complete the various administrative functions smoothly.

So our household wasn’t completely Filipino, but I grew up around many aspects of the Filipino culture. Where is the best place you’ve played at? Or your most memorable gig? I’d have to say one of my most memorable places playing was Japan. It was one of my first oversea tours, and I was especially excited because it was a country I wanted to visit for a very long time, and I was lucky enough to play a couple shows while I was over there. Have you ever played in the Philippines? Or work with Filipino / Fil-Am artists? I played the Malasimbo Festival in Puerto Galera a couple years ago. And had a chance to meet and connect with a few Manila-based artists, not just artists involved with music, but other mediums of art. Where do you regularly play now? Or are you more involved with producing for other artists on Mellow Orange? I don’t really have a regular spot I play at. Occasionally,

The day called for a sweater, scarf, and a pair of boots. The chilly air in Germany’s Schwarzwald — the Black Forest — greeted me as I opened the front door one morning and brought my luggage to the car. We planned a road trip to Bavaria, which is one of the most popular destinations for travelers. It comes as no surprise since it is home to some natural wonders and fairy-tale castles. Our journey began in the northern part of the Black Forest, in a small town called Bad Liebenzell where my uncle resides. The travel time was long and my companions — two senior citizens —

it houses the very cross before which the people of Oberammergau vowed to perform the Passion Play every ten years. According to history, a lot of the town’s inhabitants were taken by the plague in 1633 and the village representatives swore to honor the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in hopes that they would be freed from the epidemic. Sources said that there were no deaths from that moment on, even when it continued to inflict neighboring places. Oberammergau’s version is now the oldest Passion Play, which has existed continuously since 1634. Now, people from the different parts of the globe flock to Oberammergau to watch the six-hour play. Most of the town’s citizens participate in the production, and the last one was staged in 2010. Though we were not able to watch the play then, we were simply happy just to be there. It’s not everyday that I get to experience the cool countryside with the Ammergau Alps as the backdrop.
Getting to Germany Fly directly from Dubai to Munich Airport via Lufthansa, Emirates, KLM, Aeroflot, Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Egyptair, Air France, Swiss International Air Lines. From the Munich Airport, take the autobahn for easy access to Oberammergau.
Suggested Side Trips Aside from the Passion Play, there are other attractions in the Oberammergau area. Consider the following: Museum of Oberammergau – where you can discover more about the art of wood carving that the town is famous for Linderhof Castle – built by King Ludwig II as a hunting lodge Benedictine Abbey Ettal – founded in 1330 is still an active monastery and school.
