Welcome

From the 2015 Houston Art Car Parade Chairs

Aliyya and Herman Stude Welcome to the 28th Annual Houston Art Car Parade presented by The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art! It is our honor to be chairing this beloved, unique event that is the first and largest Art Car parade in the world, and the largest free public event in Houston. For 28 years, the Houston Art Car Parade has grown into an internationally recognized destination for the expression of personal artistic creativity, giving the opportunity for anyone with the “drive to create” a forum to express their talents. This year, the Houston Art Car Parade features 114 entries from across the nation that have never participated in the parade before, 29 schools and youth groups who under the instruction of their teachers have created fascinating mobile masterpieces, a slew of biking and skating entries, and for the first time a true Houston tradition – the SLAB. As art car owners and drivers ourselves, we understand the talent, perseverance and creativity it takes to create this type of rolling art, which is why the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art’s educational outreach initiatives are so important. Providing the opportunity for elementary, middle and high school students to express their creativity, learn new skills and present a final product that they’ve put months of effort into in front of a crowd of nearly 300,000 on parade day proves to be an empowering and motivating experience. Make sure to check out new entries this year from famed art car maven and HISD’s first dedicated Art Car Teacher Rebecca Bass and her students at Reagan High School, as well as acclaimed artist Patrick Renner and his class at Sharpstown International High School – both have fabulous surprises in store for us! We hope that while you’re enjoying this year’s Houston Art Car Parade you can find some inspiration of your own to take home because that’s what this is all about – discovering the artist in everyone! We also encourage you to visit the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art’s website to learn more about their exciting projects and upcoming programming – www.orangeshow.org In the words of Orange Show Monument creator Jeff McKissack, “Love Oranges and Live!”

The world famous

Orange Show Monument 2401 Munger St.

The Orange Show Monument is a work of art, an architectural wonder and the hub of our community that celebrates the artist in everyone. It was build single-handedly from 1956 until its completion in 1979 by the late Jefferson Davis McKissack, a Houston mail carrier. The outdoor, 3,000 square foot space is constructed of concrete, brick, steel and found objects including gears, tiles, wagon wheels, mannequins, tractor seats, statuettes and colorful mosaics Jeff McKissack’s creation extols the virtues of his favorite fruit and encourages visitors of all ages to follow his theories relating health and longevity to good nutrition, hard work and eating oranges. The Orange Show Monument is one of the most important folk art environments in the United States and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in January 2006. The Orange Show Monument is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm to 5pm, and between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Wednesday through Sunday from 12-5pm. The Orange Show Monument is closed for restoration January through March.

The beer can House

222 Malone St.

In 2001, The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art acquired another Houston landmark, the famous Beer Can House, located in Rice Military. For over 20 years, retired railroad upholsterer John Milkovisch used every part of almost 50,000 aluminum beer cans to cover his 20’s-era bungalow. With garlands of beer can tops hanging from the eaves, and a yard filled with thousands of marbles, rocks, and figurines, The Beer Can House quickly became a notable landmark in a rapidly changing neighborhood. After careful restoration, The Beer Can House was opened to the public for the first time in 2008 and since then has inspired hundred of thousands of visitors, and is often named one of the top destinations to visit in Texas.

Orange Show

Art Bus

The Beer Can House is open Saturdays and Sundays, from 12-5pm, and between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Wednesday through Sunday from 12-5pm.

Built from a 1970’s mobile x-ray unit, The Orange Show Art Bus brings exciting art education to children in inner city Houston elementary and middle schools who have had their arts budget cut. Thanks to generous contributions from Texas Women for the Arts, IKEA, Texas Commission on the Arts, the Houston Arts Alliance and United Airlines, The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art in collaboration with City ArtWorks produces an entire semester of arts curriculum, focusing on creative thought, art history and personal inspiration. Additionally, The Orange Show Art Bus travels to area festivals and special events providing art activities for the public.

A fun green space

Smither Park

2441 Munger St.

The newest project from The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art sits on a half-acre adjacent to the Orange Show Monument and is the city’s first folk art-inspired green space, providing an exciting new destination in Houston’s East End. Designed by artist and architect Dan Phillips in memory of the late John Smither, the first phase of Smither Park is complete and includes The Lindley Fish for musical and theatrical performances, The Vinson & Elkins Pavilion for family and community gatherings, swings for relaxing, a meditation garden for reflecting, and a beautiful 400-foot long memory wall adorned with mosaic images hand-placed by local artists. When the park is fully completed, each structure will be embellished by the same type of mosaic art. Smither Park is open 7 days a week.

Houston art Car parade In 1984, Kit and Carl Detering donated a 1967 Ford Station Wagon to the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art to be auctioned at their annual gala. With a budget of $800 for paint and plastic fruit, artist Jackie Harris transformed the car into a mobile work of art and called it “The Fruitmobile.” That same year, Ann Harithas curated an exhibition called “Collision” at Lawndale Art Center that featured several spectacularly decorated cars. All this activity resulted in the explosion of “art cars” on the streets of Houston and for the next few years, small gatherings of art cars began to pop up around the city. In 1986, as part of New Music America, the Orange Show produced a parade organized by Trish Herrera and Rachel Hecker that led to the opening event of the Cullen Sculpture Garden at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Two years later, the Houston International Festival asked the Orange Show to produce an event dedicated to art cars and the Houston Art Car Parade was born. In its first year, the Houston Art Car Parade saw 40 entries and about 2,000 attendees. Twenty-eight years later, it is considered the largest gathering of its kind on earth – attracting over 250 of these mobile masterpieces to roll in front of 300,000 spectators along Allen Parkway leading into downtown Houston. Community groups, public and private schools, and professional organizations

have become regular participants along with trained and untrained artists of all ages who are inspired by what they see year after year and decide to create art cars of their own. The New York Times even proclaimed the Houston Art Car Parade as “a retina-saturating extravaganza.” Now, The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art celebrated the Houston Art Car Parade by producing an entire weekend of events, including the Sneak Peek at Discovery Green, Main Street Drag, the Legendary Art Car Ball and the Houston Art Car Parade Awards Ceremony, where $15,000 in prize money is awarded to artists. For more information about all of these events, and to learn more about the history of the Houston Art Car Parade, visit www.TheHoustonArtCarParade.com

2015 houston art car parade Judges MICHAEL RAY CHARLES

Michael Ray Charles was born in 1967 in Lafayette, Louisiana, and graduated from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 1985. In college, he studied advertising design and illustration, eventually moving to painting, his preferred medium. Charles also received an MFA degree from the University of Houston in 1993. His graphically styled paintings investigate racial stereotypes drawn from a history of American advertising, product packaging, billboards, radio jingles, and television commercials. Charles draws comparisons between Sambo, Mammy, and minstrel images of an earlier era and contemporary mass-media portrayals of black youths, celebrities, and athletes—images he sees as a constant in the American subconscious. “Stereotypes have evolved,” he notes. “I’m trying to deal with present and past stereotypes in the context of today’s society.”

ANN HARITHAS

Ann Harithas is an artist, collector, curator and patron, and with her husband James, founded the Art Car Museum in 1988, a private institution with an emphasis on artists that are overlooked by other cultural institutions. She is a longtime supporter of the Orange Show Foundation, Art Car movement and Houston Art Car Parade. Ann brought her love of the Art Car to her hometown of Victoria, Texas and The Nave Museum with several exhibits of Art Car artists. Now in its fourth year, The Nave presents Art Car Parade & Festival, Saturday, April 18 in Victora. Ann has served as a Houston Art Car judge for many years, and continues to be an important part of Houston’s art car family.

MICHAEL ROQUE COLLINS

Michael Roque Collins is the current artist in residence and Director of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies at Houston Baptist University. Michael explains, “My philosophy of education in the arts revolves around several fulcrums of thought which have made me better able to represent my life’s thoughts and feelings in a more creative way. Technical excellence, the training of hand eye facility, mastery of the human form, exploring self and the cultural horizon all are central thoughts which drive my desire to aid others through their creative journeys.” Michael is recognized as producing some of the most profoundly affecting figurative Post Symbolic paintings seen in contemporary art.

MARILYN OSHMAN

Marilyn Oshman is the founder and chairman of The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art and is deeply committed to all its activities, which include preservation of The Orange Show. Marilyn and Ann Harithas, along with Walter Hopps, envisioned and implemented the art car judging and awards program as a way to encourage and celebrate the art form locally and nationally.

PEDRO FRIEDEBERG

In Pedro’s own words… …“I was born in Italy during the era of Mussolini, who made all trains run on time. Immediately thereafter, I moved to México where the trains are never on time, but where once they start moving they pass pyramids. My education was first entrusted to a Zapotec governess and later to brilliant mentors such as Mathias Goeritz, who taught me morals, José González, who taught me carpentry, and Gerry Morris, who taught me to play bridge. I have invented several styles of architecture, as well as one new religion and two salads. I am particularly fond of social problems and cloud formations. I admire everything that is useless, frivolous and whimsical. I hate functionalism, postmodernism and almost everything else. My work is always criticizing the absurdity of things. I am an idealist. I am certain that very soon now humanity will arrive at a marvelous epoch totally devoid of Knoll chairs, jogging pants, tennis shoes and baseball caps sideway use, and the obscenity of Japanese rock gardens five thousand miles from Kyoto.” Pedro Friedeberg’s work is in a number of Houston’s impressive art collections and has been aquired over the past thirty years.

Marilyn is driven by her passion and long-term interest in Houston’s art scene and has always been dedicated to the creation of a vibrant and interesting cultural climate. She currently serves on the board of The Menil Collection and The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art.
