FACTS ABOUT ESTONIA • TIETOA VIROSTA Location Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is located in Northern Europe in the north-eastern part of the Baltic Sea region. Area of Tallinn - 159,2 km² (Estonia 45 227 km²). Climate The climate in Tallinn is characterized by a fairly cold winter, a cool spring with little precipitation, a moderately warm summer and a long and rainy autumn. Some summers have weeks at a stretch of temperatures around +30°C, and a warm, sunny summer can keep autumn at bay until mid-October. Average temperature in July +16,7°C. Average temperature in February -4°C Weather forecast in the Internet: www.weather.ee/tallinn Time Estonia is in the Eastern European Time Zone: GMT + 2 hours. In summer: GMT + 3 hours. Population The population of Tallinn is 450 531 (01.07.2018). Nationalities: Estonian 52.3%, Russian 38.5%, Ukrainian 3.9%, other 5,3%. Language Estonian’s official language is Estonian. Russian, Finnish, English and German are also understood and widely spoken. Religion The largest denomination is Lutheran (30%) followed by Russian Orthodox (28%), and Catholic (3%). However, only about 20% of Estonians practice any religion. Communications It’s a testing ground for mobile services – you can pay for parking and goods, create your own mobile service and Skype was invented here. As we are a small country costs are the same wherever you call. Some hotels will give you free phone calls within Estonia to all landlines. To ring Estonia from abroad, dial +372 before the number. Internet Public Internet access points have been set up all over Estonia. Access to wireless, free internet is approaching 100% in Tallinn - even in the parks and beaches - and no hotel dares charge for it now. The departure lounge at Tallinn airport has free internet access points for passengers. Post Offices Post offices still exist in the larger towns and are worth seeking out, as they sell low priced postcards, stamps. Medical Services Pharmacies are usually open from 10:00-19:00, but one stays open all night (Tõnismäe Apteek, Tõnismägi 5, ph: +372 644 2282). Ordinary medication is available in all pharmacies. Joissakin hotelleissa saat ilmaiset puhelut Viron sisällä lankaliittymiin. Matkapuhelinverkot toimivat kaikkialla, myös pienillä saarilla ja merellä kotimatkallasi. Soitaessasi Viroon ulkomailta valitse +372 numeron eteen. Jos aiot viipyä Virossa hieman pidempään ja soittaa paikallispuheluja, kannattaa ehkä ostaa pre-paid -palvelun SIMkortti. Internet Pääsy ilmaiseen langattomaan internettiin alkaa Tallinnassa jo lähestyä 100%:ia. Nettiin pääsee jopa puistoissa, uimarannoilla, Tallinnan vanhankaupungin toreilla, stadioneilla jm. Yleisissä kirjastoissa pääsee käyttämään konetta ilmaiseksi. Posti Postikonttoreita on vielä suurimmissa Viron kaupungeissa. Postitoimistot ovat yleensä avoinna arkisin klo 9.00-18.00 ja lauantaisin klo 9.00-15.00. PUBLIC TRANSPORT Central Tallinn is very compact and easy to get around, and reaching farther out destinations is simple thanks to the city’s network of buses, trolleys and trams. Uniform transport tickets are used in trams, trolley buses and city line buses of Tallinn (lines numbers 1–73). Buses, trolleys and trams operate regularly from 6 to 23 (some lines until 24:00). The ticket system works on a random-inspection basis, so you can board via any door and don’t have to show anything to the driver. At front door you can pay with Visa ja MasterCard. Fine is €40 . Tallinn Card A Tallinn Card acts as a ticket, entitling the holder to unlimited free public transport for the period the card is active. It also gives you free admission to museums and signts, a free sightseeing tour of your choice and other discounts. Each time you board a vehicle, you must validate the ride using your Tallinn Card the same way you would with a Smartcard (see below). Paper Ticket A single-ride paper ticket can be bought from the driver for cash – exact change only – when you first board. The ticket costs €2 (€1 for ISIC Student and Scholar Card holders) and is valid only for that ride in that vehicle. Keep the ticket handy for the duration of the ride. Smartcard The green, plastic Smartcard (Ühiskaart) is a farecard that lets you use the electronic ticket system. Buy it at any R-Kiosk, post office or the Tallinn City Government customer service desk for a €2 deposit and then load it with enough credit. The €2 Smartcard deposit can be reclaimed within 6 months of the first time the card was validated. QR-ticket 1 ride 1 €. Purchase up to 10 rides onto your QR-ticket.

Driving In Estonia, as in continental Europe, the traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road. Estonian law requires an international driver’s license and valid insurance policy. During daylight hours, dipped headlights or daytime driving lights must be switched on. After dark, the main headlights must be switched on. The driver and the passengers must wear seatbelts at all times. Speed limits are as follows, unless marked otherwise: 1. In residential areas, maximum speed limit 20 km/h 2. In built-up areas, maximum speed limit 50 km/h 3. Outside built-up areas, maximum speed limit 90 km/h, and in summer, some roads allow maximum speeds of 110 km/h. International fuel stations are easy to find. The largest international chains operating in Estonia are Statoil and Neste. By Air: You can fly to Kuressaare, Saaremaa from Tallinn and Stockholm. But you can fly to Tallinn from all major European cities. By Bus: The bus service operates at least seven times a day, the total journey time being four hours from Tallinn to Kuressaare. At least nine direct buses daily travel each way between Tallinn and Kuressaare. There are four buses daily to/from Tartu and two buses daily to/from Pärnu. There are five buses daily between Virtsu and Saaremaa, and another five buses daily each way between Kuivastu (Muhu) and Kuressaare - a 1.5-hour trip timed to connect with ferry arrivals and departures. Likewise, at Virtsu you can board a bus bound to Tallinn or elsewhere. By Sea: Saaremaa is very popular with visiting yachties. The best harbour facilities are at the Nasva Yacht Club (Nasva Jahtklubi; tel: +372 75 140, fax: +372 55 257), 9km (5mi) west of Kuressaare. But Kuressaare Yacht Harbour is an international port for small ships. The harbour has received the Blue Flag for environmental friendliness. The car and passenger ferry from the mainland port of Virtsu operates hourly to Kuivastu in the summer and every two hours during the rest of the year. (The journey takes about half an hour.) In summer it is essential to reserve a place for your car in advance as far ahead as possible. Reservations can be made through the ferry terminals or at the Kuressaare booking office.

Ruhnu ( Swedish : Runö , Latvian : Roņu sala ) is an Estonian island in the Gulf of Riga in the Baltic Sea. At 11.9 square kilometers, it is currently less than 100, mostly ethnic Estonian, permanent inhabitants. Before 1944, it was for centuries populated by ethnic Swedes and traditional Swedish law was used. The first archaeological artifacts of human activity in Ruhnu, assumed to be related to seasonal seal hunting, dates back to around 5000 BC. The first documented record of the island of Ruhnu, and of its Swedish population, is a 1341 letter sent by the Bishop of Courland which confirmed the islanders’ right to reside and manage their property in accordance with Swedish law. Ruhnu Lighthouse is designed by Gustave Eiffel. The Ruhnu wooden church, built in 1644, is one of the oldest wood built buildings in Estonia. Limo beach is one of the most popular and accessible beaches for tourists. Ruhnu Airport operates regular flights to Pärnu and Kuressaare. A ferry runs from Munalaid in the mainland to Ruhnu. The trip takes approx. 4,5 hours. Bookings can be made via phone and internet [3].

We are situated in the middle of the island and have hosted guests since 1998. Our farm with a small store is surrounded by a historical milieu where traditions are in honor. We can host up to 46 visitors in different unique cottages. We offer catering to all visitors of the island . We cater guests in an old Ruhnu cottage from the year 1937. In case of pre-ordering we prepare meals for special occasions, picnic baskets, and catering for bigger groups up to 300 people. Come visit us and experience the summer warmth, sand beaches, salty sea water, and walks around the island. Daily routine and obligations will seem far already when crossing the sea. The country’s spa traditions date back hundreds of years. One of the reasons such resorts developed here was the local mud, famed for its therapeutic qualities and which continues to be used today. Pärnu, Haapsalu, Kuressaare and Narva-Jõesuu have been fashionable resorts since the 1820s, while Värska, Kubija, Pühajärve, Toila, Viimsi and of course Tallinn also boast excellent spas. In Estonia you may in several places find therapeutic mud, the healing properties of which were known in folk medicine since ancient times. Spas in the present meaning of the word were established as early as in the 1820- 40’s. Establishments were especially built or reconstructed for the use of local seawater or mud for the treatment of ailments under the supervision of physicians. Today the main objectives of the spa treatments are to give prophylactic care and spa treatments of the kind, which hinder ailments from becoming chronic, lessening the need of sick care, thereby saving costs, and to restore the working capacity and general capacities of the ailing. In our continually more and more hectic rhythm of life many middle aged and even younger persons suffer from stress. In the course of time the Estonian spas have also partly changed their policy from being purely care centres towards being recreation centres, where the clients in addition to the treatments have the possibility to occupy themselves in various healthy activities, go in for sports or just relax and spend their time comfortably. A holiday for your health. Estonia boasts five resort towns, more than 40 spas, a range of unique and luxurious manor hotels, and untouched countryside with the world’s cleanest air. The history of spas in Estonia expands over more than two centuries. In 1813, doctor Benedikt Georg Witte began offering salt and herb baths in Kadriorg, thereby making Tallinn the first resort town in the Russian Empire. This aspect of Tallinn quickly gained popularity among the Russian elite. An attentive Baltic German physician Carl Abraham Hunnius took notice of how Estonians in Haapsalu rubbed sea mud on their bodies to alleviate joint

pain. Convinced of its restorative powers, Hunnius opened the renown Mud Baths of Haapsalu in 1825. Tallinn, Haapsalu, Narva-Jõesuu, Kuressaare and Pärnu, which have a long history as a health vacationing destinations, continue to be highly regarded resort towns to this day. The healing mud found in Estonia is also greatly valued nowadays. In addition to sea mud, be sure to try the unique treatments in Värska, where freshwater mud is combined with mineral water that originates from the depth of half a kilometre below the surface and which has not seen the light of day for over 500 million years.

CITY MAP • KARTTA The unique value of Tallinn’s Old Town lies first and foremost in the well-preserved completeness of its medieval milieu and structure, which has been lost in most of the capitals of northern Europe. Since 1997, the Old Town of Tallinn has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Tallinn is one of the best retained medieval European towns, with its web of winding cobblestone streets and properties, from the 11th to 15th centuries, preserved nearly in its entirety. All the most important state and church buildings from the Middle Ages have been preserved in their basic original form, as well as many citizens’ and merchants’ residences, along with barns and warehouses from the medieval period.
