MEDICAL DISPOSABLES IN DENMARK – HOME TO INDUSTRY LEADERS Looking for a place to develop and produce high-quality and innovative medical disposables? Looking for a strategic location near industry leaders? Looking for a highly skilled and innovative workforce? Have a look at Denmark!

Locating in Denmark offers excellent possibilities of creating some of the world’s best medical disposables. Denmark is home to a large number of industry leaders and upwards of 40% of the medical technology companies in Denmark are producing or distributing internationally recognised quality medical disposables. The medical technology industry in Denmark is characterised by a critical mass of small companies while the 20 largest companies account for approximately 75 % of total sales. Of these 20 companies almost half are producing or distributing medical disposables, including Ambu International, Coloplast, Dansac, Fresenius Kabi, Novo Nordisk, Nunc, SCA Hygiene Products, Unomedical and William Cook Europe (Medico Industrien, 2007; 2008). Medical disposables produced in Denmark are characterised by being innovative, of high-quality and designed to meet the needs of the users, whether that be patients or healthcare professionals. This is due to strong user-producer linkages and an exceptional ability to listen to end-users and translate their needs into state-of-the-art products. A strong focus on technological development, design, simplicity, functionality and market-testing furthermore contributes to the high-quality and usefulness of the medical disposables produced in Denmark.

MEDICAL DISPOSABLES IN DENMARK – HOME TO INDUSTRY LEADERS

First-class research and education Medical disposables often require a complex combination of competencies. One of the main reasons for Denmark’s stronghold within the area is the presence of world-class universities, research institutions and technical colleges working at the forefront of technological development and conducting research and education with a profoundly interdisciplinary character. Denmark, for example, has strong research teams at several universities and research institutions with a particular know-how within new materials technologies. Industry collaboration

A contributing factor to Denmark’s stronghold is a unique interplay between the Danish universities, university hospitals, and the industry, creating synergies between research and development of new products and companies. In collaboration with the medical disposable industry and the health sector, Danish universities, research institutions and technical colleges constantly work on creating innovative technologies and on designing, developing and producing high-quality and highly useful medical disposables improving patients life and the work of health care professionals. One example is the Electronic Patch, a Danish initiative among universities and industry gathered in an innovation consortium for developing a technological platform where electronics, sensors, antenna and battery are integrated in a monitoring system embedded in a skin friendly sticking patch for distant surveillance of patients. Partners in the innovative consortium include Coloplast, DELTA, Tunstall Healthcare, RTX Healthcare, Systematic, Silicide, SOS International, the Technical University of Denmark and Aalborg University.
