ith the Southern States Carnivals now completed, Queensland is expecting a large influx of Southerners to temporarily change their winter address to the Sunshine State, where they can be sure to receive a very warm and hospitable welcome. When I initially relocated to Queensland from Victoria some thirty odd years ago, for what I thought at the time would be a working holiday, little did I know that this would be a permanent move. This year, The Brisbane Winter Racing Club Carnival which is spread over five weeks from May 10th to June 7th will be the best ever, and I am looking forward to all the events the Brisbane Racing Club have on offer. You can read about what’s in store starting on page 10. Queensland is blessed to have in excess of 25 female apprentice jockeys and Lucy Henderson has written a story on just three of these young ladies, Tegan Harrison, Ruby Ride and Priscilla Schmidt on page 16. Greg Irvine from Magic Millions has brought to us a story about the beautiful Francesca Cumani, who with a champion trainer father and her mother an equine extraordinaire, it is no surprise that Francesca is living a dream. See page 4. We have featured a number of ladies on page 26 who are making their mark within Tabcorp, Australia’s largest wagering operator. Did you know that the Racing Industry employs a record number of female employees? The Sky Racing Team also welcomes a new member to their team, well known media personality, Amelia Oberhardt, who will host Bred to Win and Off the Beaten Track. Once again our Award winning International Photographer, Sharon Lee Chapman of Fast Track Photography has excelled herself with her stories and images from her trip to Cheltenham and Dubai. It is a truly magnificent venue, featuring murals from a remarkable Australian, Napier Waller. When you read how he overcame an horrific injury he received in the First World War, you will be truly inspired. See page 68. Francesca Cumani Livingt heDream

ravelling the world and attending some of the biggest and most unique racing events and meeting thousands of horse lovers, Francesca is in her element. For it was the love of the horse and the travel that comes with it that led Francesca to graduating for a traveling track rider and foreperson to one of the world’s most recognisable and respected television presenters in thoroughbred circles. To understand this transition we have to travel to the other side of the world and one of the most famous horse racing centres. Newmarket is the home of horse racing in England. It

is believed racing there was held as early as 1174. At any one time about 3000 horses are trained at Newmarket. It is here where Luca Cumani, an Italian bred horse trainer, has become one of the world’s leading trainers. He started at the famed Bedford House Stables in 1976 and since he’s trained dozens of Group One winners across more countries than people travel in a lifetime. Luca’s star gallopers have included Barathea, Falbrav, Kahyasi, Presvis, Commanche Run as well as Aussie champ Starcraft during a successful European campaign. It was Luca’s drive to achieve on the international circuit that led to Francesca arriving in Australia.

It was one of those chance meetings. The pair attended a mutual friend’s wedding and seated on the same table, opposite each other. The gazes at the table led to long phone calls with the two falling in love. Last year the pair engaged with a wedding set for August. Rob has carved out a successful polo career, following in the footsteps of his father James from the family’s Hunter Valley property of Glenugie at Scone. Like Francesca, Rob spends much of his year travelling – based in England and Argentina during their polo seasons.

Francesca’s ties to Australia commenced in 2006 when she flew to Melbourne with two of her Dad’s stayers chasing glory in the famous Flemington two miler. She enjoyed her time in Melbourne so much she took the next eight months off from Europe and worked around Australasia – splitting her time with champion trainer David Hayes as well as a bloodstock agent and a stud farm in New Zealand. A couple of years later, and during another trip to Melbourne as the Cumani Cup hunt intensified, Francesca was approached by an executive of Channel Seven asking if she would be interested in joining the on air panel for Melbourne Cup week. “I thought about it for a little while and decided to give it a go. I have really enjoyed being part of the team and I have been a part of the coverage each year since,” she said. “I put a lot of time and effort into my on-air work – spending many hours going through the form of the horses, watching replays and getting to know all the upcoming runners.” “If you’re doing live television you need to know your stuff! “

In January Francesca and Rob attended one of Australia’s best known carnivals with Francesca taking up a role as the international ambassador for the Magic Millions Carnival on the Gold Coast. In her role Francesca attended a range of events while soaking up the beautiful Queensland sunshine. “It’s a really fun week at the Gold Coast,” she said. “There’s a great vibe at the Magic Millions.” “It’s great being located near the beach and everybody is in a good mood.” “I love the auditorium where they sell the horses. It’s unique to have the open space with the ringside dining - where the owners and trainers can invite people to sit and dine with them and learn at the same time.” Luca Cumani jokes that at his first couple of trips to Australia he was introduced as the leading European trainer – these days he’s referred to as Francesca’s father. With a daughter who seemingly has it all, is there any wonder why!

Francesca’s media career took another giant step in 2011 when one of her university friends told her that world service CNN was looking for a presenter for a horse racing show. The program, Winning Post, sees Francesca winging her way around the world bringing viewers stories from the globe’s major carnivals. “From May through September the major racing events are in Europe – in England, Ireland, France and Germany,” she points out. “And then from October it goes around the world – from Melbourne to Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, South Africa, Qatar and Dubai.” With so many trips to Australia it seemed only a matter of time that an Australian man would capture Francesca’s heart. And so it happened. Rob Archibald is one of Australia’s leading international polo stars - like Francesca, hailing for a highly regarded equine family.

he lovely Michelle Cook, wife of Gold Coast Turf Club Chairman Brett, started Girls on Tour in 2013. The idea came to her as she wanted to get a few ladies together, share champagne over lunch and showcase the Gold Coast Turf Club as a venue that can be enjoyed not only by the men but the ladies as well.

This year’s Girls on Tour second event hosted by the beautiful Charli Robinson, was fantastic, with over 100 ladies attending. The GCTC was very supportive with many of their sponsors throwing their support behind the idea by donating various prizes which were used to raise funds for the Cancer Council Queensland. The day raised $1770.00 and that was a fantastic effort for such a small group of ladies. The seafood buffet and champagne lunch was held in the newly completed Corporate Suites overlooking the racetrack. They all have their own balconies and tote facilities. The end of the afternoon saw many of the ladies up and dancing the afternoon away.

Since its establishment in 1961, Cancer Council Queensland has relied on the generous donations of Queenslanders to provide a vital link between the public and people with cancer in Queensland. Survival rates are improving but cures must still be found for 200 different types of cancer. This will only happen with further medical and scientific research. Throughout each year, Cancer Council Queensland contributes funds raised by public donations for both clinical and basic research at the State’s universities, major hospitals and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research . Michelle had an earlier event that year and proceeds went to the local Animal Welfare League. With such a positive response from both events, she will be holding another one at the GCTC early next year before the Magic Millions.

hile Melbourne and Sydney race fans embrace their typical chilly winter days, Brisbane will be turning it on at the Eagle Farm and Doomben racecourses over five (5) successive Saturdays. The Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival is one of the nation’s most prestigious racing celebrations and has evolved into one of the significant events on the Australian racing calendar. With a rich history dating back as far as 125-years, the Eagle Farm and Doomben racecourses have seen the progression of some the nation’s best horses, trainers and jockeys. It was at the 1979 Brisbane Racing Carnival that the first lady jockey rode with equality against her male hoops opponents. Pioneering lady jockey, Pam O’Neill, made history riding a horse called Samei Boy in the Booroolong Handicap.

After years’ of tirelessly campaigning for male and female jockeys to compete on an equal platform, Pam became a pioneer for not just lady jockeys but all ladies involved in the industry. She was eventually rewarded with a spot in Racing Queensland’s Hall of Fame. Thirty-five years since Pam’s historic ride, the Brisbane Racing Carnival is now a thriving platform for the nation’s best racing talents, both male and female. Legendary racing personality and Brisbane Racing Club racing manager, Bart Sinclair, is very excited to see the best in the industry shine this winter. Always a strong advocate of ladies in racing, Mr Sinclair believes the industry would completely crumble without the involvement of the ladies. “Women play a hugely significant role within the industry,

Brisbane’s premier thoroughbred racing event is about to jump from the gates for another winter of fast-paced action and celebration. The annual Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival in May and June brings together the finest trackside action, hospitality, fashion and entertainment and in perfect South East Queensland winter sunshine. across all sections,” Mr Sinclair said. “From administrators to strappers, jockeys and trainers – women are leading the way in racing and will be playing a pivotal role in this Brisbane Racing Carnival.” Top trainers such as Gillian Hienrich and Helen Page will be competing in various carnival events in Brisbane. “Women have a wonderful presence with the horses. They’re extremely passionate and affectionate and have a different and gentler approach, which has seen the likes of Gai Waterhourse achieve great results,” Mr Sinclair said. The Sunshine State’s ideal mid-year weather makes Brisbane’s racecourses the ideal location for both racegoers and superbly trained race horses to showcase their talent. Some of Australia’s finest four-legged thoroughbreds will compete at the Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival, which features 42 races, including the Doomben 10,000 and the AAMI Stradbroke.

The carnival is expecting record numbers through the gates at both Eagle Farm and Doomben race tracks. Brisbane Racing Club’s Chief Executive Officer, Dave Whimpey, is excited by the racing program for 2014 proceedings. “The Brisbane Racing Carnival has significantly evolved over recent decades and has grown into one the nation’s finest exhibitions of top quality racing,” Mr Whimpey said.“This year we have really stepped up our entertainment, fashion stakes, hospitality packages and inclusions. One of Australia’s most awarded restaurants, Aria, will provide the catering in the Birdcage Marquees for both the Treasury Casino and Hotel Queensland Oaks Day and the AAMI Stradbroke Handicap Day. “Whether you want the best seat for racing in the ‘Punter’s Den’, be involved in all the action and socialising of the Lawn Party, or prefer a private dining experience in the Trackside Restaurant - there is something for every racing preference and budget.’’

“In the lead up to spring, Brisbane’s carnival plays a pivotal role in maintaining the optimum fitness of the horses,”’ Mr Sinclair continued. The Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival is made up of five major race days: the Bundaberg Distilling Co. BTC Cup, Doomben Cup, James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10,000, Treasury Casino and Hotel Queensland Oaks and the AAMI Stradbroke Handicap. Mr Sinclair said, “The AAMI Stradbroke Handicap is Queensland’s Melbourne Cup Day event. It’s the highlight of the carnival. Always a terrific race day, the Stradbroke brings the best quality racing, atmosphere and excitement”. “The Treasury Casino and Hotel Queensland Oaks Day, better known as ‘Ladies Day’, is also an

With the Southern States Carnivals coming to an end, we have featured just three of the girls who could be seen to shine over the next few months in the Metropolitan and Country tracks in Queensland.

The headline lady jockey racing in Brisbane at the moment is undeniably ace youngster, Tegan Harrison. She has a stranglehold over the apprenticeship jockeys’ premiership again this season and has caught the eye of many in the industry over the past couple of years.

The 2014 Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival runs throughout May and June, attracting the biggest names in the industry from all parts of Australia.

She’s pulling off some great Saturday metropolitan winning rides in the lead-up to the Carnival, but while she remains modest, she’s sure to get a few gun rides in the Group races based on her recent white hot form.

Much of the focus is deservedly on the champion horses these iconic races attract, but it takes a good jockey to guide a well trained horse to victory. When it comes to ladies in racing, it is easy to look up in the stands and see the gorgeous gowns and fancy hats, but look on the other side of the barriers and you’ll find many fine female apprentice jockeys who we just adore. Below we take a brief look at three female apprentice jockeys to watch this winter in Queensland.

hile the ladies may let out a little curse over having to match their scarves with their fascinator; how will they manage to get away with that strappy number in the cold, here we spare a thought to the ladies for whom the cold is very familiar; Queensland’s female jockeys, who rise before dawn.

In late March she outrode her city allowance with a full two months still left in her apprenticeship. It was an incredible effort for the up-and-comer who already boasts over 80 metropolitan wins, a feat previously achieved by three other female jockeys, including Brisbane’s Lacey Morrison. That’s not her only claim to Queensland record-book fame either. Tegan also became the first female jockey to take out the metropolitan apprentices’ title with an incredible 44 winners, the best of any lady jockey in Brisbane.

Ruby Ride Ruby Ride Another apprentice jockey making all the right moves leading up to the big races in Brisbane over the coming months, with a name like Ruby Ride, seemed destined to do what her surname suggests. She may not be as easily recognisable as Tegan but her form is very similar, with her very high Win Rate %, slightly better than Tegan’s at the time we went to print. Apprenticed in Toowoomba, watch for Ruby on the Brisbane tracks and South East Queensland. Priscilla Schmidt Sunshine Coast-based Prisiclla Schmidt is another household name when it comes to ladies in racing. Another apprentice making a

Priscilla Schmidt name for herself, Priscilla is perhaps best known not for her riding, but for her comeback from two broken legs. That horror saw her spend a year on the sidelines back in 201213, but it didn’t stop her going after what she loves doing, while making a very good job of it.. Priscilla’s original plan for this coming winter was to miss the Brisbane Carnival and ride in Port Macquarie from the end of March. She came to this decision after believing her chances of securing good rides in the face of so much competition when the big guns come to town would be slim. Recent good fortune on the track however could see her change her mind.

At Callaghan Park, ladies fulfil roles across the very broad spectrum of tasks involved in a regional centre’s racing industry. They do not shirk from the challenge of preparing, training, riding and looking after the welfare and management of the horses within the industry. This photo typifies the very strong female base involved with racing in Central Queensland that boasts Callaghan Park, as its regional TAB racing centre. The Rockhampton Jockey Club’s (RJC) racing season culminates with its XXXX Gold Winter Racing Carnival where racing and social patrons are able to celebrate the best of racing in prestigious style, along with glamorous fashion. Time honoured traditional races feature the Tattersall’s Sprint and Cup as lead ups to the XXXX Gold Newmarket and the Rockhampton Gold Cup. The XXXX Gold Winter Racing Carnival opens on May 29th and will celebrate the racing heritage of this iconic track, with the feature event being the $22,000 three-year- old 1300m QTIS handicap. The glamour events of the XXXX Gold Winter Racing Carnival are very definitely the Rockhampton Girls Grammar Day held on June 14th and the $100,000 Rockhampton Gold Cup held on June 21st. This year, the Rockhampton Jockey Club is pleased to have the expertise of Lauren Walker from Brisbane as a judge for Fashions on the Field. Lauren specialises in international fashion, travelling to France and Germany twice a year to purchase her collections. Lauren has been a long time member of the Brisbane Turf Club and regularly judges and enters Fashions on the Field competitions. Madonna Boodle from Rockhampton will be the local fashion ambassador to assist Lauren in her duties on the day. The ladies of Rockhampton recently excelled themselves by attending the inaugural Hats, Heels and High Tea on April 11th and raised a sizeable donation for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Items donated by Gai Waterhouse were a sensational hit for the silent auction. Items included an autograph book, hat and an opportunity to have breakfast with Gai at her Tulloch Randwick stables. The breakfast offer attracted great interest amongst the ladies. Special guest Neil Grigg, renowned milliner from Sydney, entertained and informed the ladies on the rights and wrongs of wearing a hat. No doubt his personally styled hats will feature during the XXXX Gold Winter Racing Carnival at Callaghan Park in Rockhampton.

Editor’s Note: In June 2012, I attended the $100,000 Rockhampton Gold Cup as a guest judge of the Fashion on the Field events and was extremely impressed by the Ladies who entered the competition, making our decision extremely difficult. A trip to the Rockhampton Gold Cup and the Rockhampton Girls Grammar Day is a must for all girls entering the Fashion on the Field Competitions. Ladies wishing for great, fun social race days will enjoy these events as the RJC go all out to for you to enjoy country hospitality with excellent racing.

his fantastic Carnival is built around two days of horse racing held in early September each year. Now celebrating its 56th year, this iconic event and regional racing favourite is a must for all lovers of racing and should be on everyone’s bucket list.

The jewel event of North Queensland, the Carlton Mid Cairns Amateurs provides a unique opportunity for locals and visitors alike to enjoy a sophisticated day or two at the races, with a growing number of celebrities attending, performing and supporting the four day Spring Carnival hosted by the Cannon Park Racecourse . The beautiful mild September climate entices large crowds, especially those from the colder Southern States. The race meeting prize money attracts interest throughout Queensland, resulting in good sized race fields every year, with both new and returning participants. The two-day race meeting has always been held at Cannon Park Racecourse; however the social functions that surround the Carnival vary from style and venue. The Club aims to provide events that appeal to the community as a whole, as well as to members, their guests, the locals and the visitors. Each year the events evolve to suit the requirements and requests of all. The social events are the premier functions held in Cairns each year, which see locals joining with Governor’s, Premier’s, Celebrities and Business leaders, who mix with Fashionista’s. The Cairns Amateurs Ball is the pinnacle event of the Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival. The past two years I have attended have been fabulous, with Marcia Hines performing in 2012 and

the lovely Jessica Mauboy, who we were lucky enough to meet, performing in 2013. This glamorous evening will be held under the stars at Fogarty Park, on the Esplanade Precinct south of the lagoon. Last year, despite the rain, 1200+ patrons enjoyed five star dining and dancing until midnight in this magical setting. Dress is strictly black tie and must be adhered to, as guests will be refused entry if they are not dressed correctly. It is a great night for ladies to impress with their most glamorous evening gowns and accessories on show. Last year was as resplendent as attending a party held by the Great Gatsby.

Tables of 10 are available and are scattered around the catwalk, the location where all the competitions are held on Friday and Saturday. Two early initiatives are a Senior Women’s Forum and a Women’s Mentoring Program. Both programs are designed to engage, grow and retain Tabcorp’s female employees. Racing has traditionally been a male-dominated industry but at Tabcorp, hundreds of women are making their mark. Tabcorp, which operates the NSW and Victorian TABs, plays a critical role in supporting the racing industry. It is the primary provider of racing funding in Australia, contributing more than $720 million each year.

Here we meet six women who help make the wagering giant tick. TRUDI JENSEN (Racing and Events Manager, Victoria) TAB provides on-course betting at more than 4,000 race meetings each year. During an average week, 300 TAB employees are serving punters at racetracks. On Melbourne Cup Day this escalates to 1,200 operators across TAB managed racetracks with half of those operators at Flemington. Victorian Racing and Events Manager, Trudi Jensen joined the TAB team in August 2012, just in time to oversee a busy Spring Racing Carnival. Trudi manages TAB’s operations and stakeholder relationships for all Victorian race meetings. Prior to joining TAB, Trudi worked at the Collingwood and Melbourne football clubs. SUZIE HUTTON (International Operations Coordinator) International Operations Coordinator, Suzie Hutton has entered her 11th year at Tabcorp and coordinates the dissemination of Australian and New Zealand racing to 52 countries across the globe. Tabcorp manages the export of Australian racing on behalf of the racing industry. Suzie says one of the most important parts of her role is helping to manage the distribution of Melbourne Cup vision. “We work closely with the VRC to distribute vision of the Melbourne Cup to many jurisdictions,” Suzie said. “Sharing the excitement of one of the world’s greatest thoroughbred races with a global audience is definitely a highlight among many throughout the racing calendar.” Suzie is part of a team that is also responsible for the comingling of wagering pools and the import of international racing into Australia. KIM WENN (Chief Information Officer) TAB takes more than 1 billion bets a year across retail outlets, racetracks, mobile devices and other channels. The Tabcorp Technology team is behind the infrastructure that maintains TAB’s wagering operating system. Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill Gardens on April 5th was not considered to be part of ‘The Championships’, but it proved to be a winning day for the connections of three outstanding equine females.

he first Group 1 on the day was the BMW and the New Zealand bred, owned and trained, ‘Silent Achiever’, ridden by Nash Rawiller, won convincingly, when she defeated last year’s best three-yearold, ‘It’s a Dundeel’ and last year’s Melbourne Cup winner ‘Fiorente’. Her owner, Mr K J Hickman and her trainer, Roger James, never lost faith in the mare especially, as by her standards, she encountered a very ordinary Melbourne Spring campaign in Australia. The win was Silent Achiever’s second consecutive win and it will be very difficult for any of her rivals to finish in front of her at her next start. The following race was the second Group 1, The Vinery Stud Stakes for three-year-old fillies. The winner ‘Lucia Valentina’ was also bred in New Zealand, owned in New Zealand by Mr Lib Petagna, but trained by Kris Lees at Newcastle and ridden by Hugh Bowman. Hugh came from last at the turn to weave a way through the field, ending up on the inside of the track for a very dominant win. On that form she will be very hard to beat in the Australian Turf Club’s, Australian Oaks to be run on the last day of The Championships.

Mossfun missed the start slightly from barrier 11 in the field of 16 and James, just 22 years-old, had to use all his skill and a clear head, when he decided to cross the field from behind, settling Mossfun on the rails. That decision was to be the secret of his success. James was able to have a clear passage throughout the race and was able to reel in the favourite, the previously unbeaten ‘Earthquake’ in the last fifty metres for a superb win, giving his many owners I’m sure,

their greatest thrill in racing. The emotion by James and the Hawkes brothers after the race was a joy to see, and their father John, at home with a back complaint, would have been ecstatic. After the race, James was quick to praise the pre-race talks that he had had with trainer John Hawkes and jockey Jim Cassidy, which he said helped him not to panic after Mossfun’s slower than usual start, showing a maturity beyond his years. The filly, purchased for $ 85,000.00, was bred by Ian and Linda Duckworth of Fairview Park Stud and is the first foal from an unraced mare, Eye for Fun.

The race day is so light and easy with entertainment for all the family. The event, apart from all the exciting racing and fabulous fashion, includes a monster Charity auction, raffles, free rides, jumping castle, NBN’s Big Dog, delicious food and so much more. The Pink Silks Race Day is a Charity event and proceeds from the day supports Love you Sister, Garvan Research Foundation, Coffs Harbour Regional Lymphedema Support Group, CHHC Intensive Care Unit and Cancer Council of NSW. Tanya Johnson and Vicky Hunter, who are on the Pink Silks committee, commented that his year the response was amazing. Over the last seven years, the event has raised over $270,000! The Committee, along with the support from the Coffs Harbour Racing Club, puts so much effort into making this day the success it is today. The judges had a hard time this year selecting a winner for the 2014 Pink Silks Race Day. One of the judges commented that it makes it even harder as all entrants are dressed in Pink! Even though this is a much more casual event than the Coffs Harbour Gold Cup Race day, there are

he easy option would have been for me to fly straight to the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions Sales. My reasoning for taking a road trip were, I was already three hours up the road for the Dederang Cup in Northern Victoria, (only another 21 or so to go), and I wanted to finally get the chance to visit Scone on the way home. These factors, combined with the constant hassles when flying with heavy camera gear, meant I was ready for a road trip. Magic Millions really know how to market their sale and utilise all that the Gold Coast has to offer. It’s always a terrific week and a brilliant “networking week”. Networking of course includes socialising at the famous ‘Moo Moos’, the central hub where the who’s who of racing is in attendance most nights. This year’s sales topper, Lot 434, the Redoutes’ Choice x Hades colt, was bought by Gai Waterhouse for Jon and Sarah Kelly from California, USA. The vendor, John and Sarah Kelly from Newhaven, made it an interesting twist! Overall, the sale’s top buyer was Gai Waterhouse/James Harron bloodstock with 39 yearlings purchased for a total of $8,160,000. This year’s sale boasted a fantastic clearance rate of 89.35%, with an average price of just over $140,000 for the 537 lots sold over the first three days. Fastnet Rock starred again with 31 yearlings selling at an average of $264,000. Recently deceased Australian sire Northern Meteor proved very popular, with 16 of his yearlings snapped up, selling for an average of $228,000. First season sire, Stryker had two yearlings on offer which sold for an average of $210,000. Other first season sires to be popular included Starspangledbanner with six yearlings sold at an average of $127,500 and Star Witness with 20 yearlings sold at an average of $106,000.

Caruso The Magic Millions Race Series was another exciting event, with the Bjorn Baker-trained Unencumbered, ridden by the late Nathan Berry, who tragically passed away recently, victorious in the Magic Millions $2,000,000 two-year-old classic. The $1m three-year-old Guineas was won by Sweet Idea, trained by Gai Waterhouse and ridden by James McDonald. After another great three sessions of sales and a race day under my belt, it was time for me to head to Scone and visit my good friend Katrina Partridge at Willow Park Stud. Katrina and I had discussed on many occasions, the idea of doing a workshop, where, if we had plenty of time, a willing horse (this time a Palomino named Caruso) and plenty of lighting equipment to have a play with, to see what we could create. After many early mornings with a very patient Caruso, lots of carrots and willing participants who let us try a few new things, we were thrilled with our “workshop results” and had a great number of hearty laughs. A side trip to Coolmore Stud to photograph the gorgeous Fastnet Rock x Avienus colt for good friend and client, Richard Anderson of Quilly Park was another highlight. We hope you enjoy the results.

s a city class carnival set in the heart of the breeding industry, the racing program is strong on fillies and mares races and gives breeders and owners a wonderful opportunity to gain black type. It is an opportunity to highlight the wonders of the Hunter Valley breeding operations as well as reward the breeders.

She is one of the best credentialed three year olds to ever go into the Inglis Guineas and there will be much interest surrounding her bid to be the first horse to take out the Inglis Triple Crown. Twilight Royale has been trained all year solely for this mission, even pre-training in Scone with local Scone trainer, Rodney Northam to familiarise herself with the environs.

Traditionally there has been a category for the local ladies in the Fashions on the Field competition as they have found it hard in the past to compete with the visitors. However, with Scone ladies taking out the major categories last year, it is now an open competition. Thoroughbred Events Australia (TEA) led by Sharon Lenton and Tracy Press are organisers and major sponsors of this glamorous event. These ladies put their heart and souls into organising events for ladies on feature race days and are dedicated to promoting talent and fashion in the thoroughbred industry and supporting race clubs.

Hospitality in the Emirates Park Marquee on Emirates Park Scone Cup day has to be seen to be believed. With a luxurious corporate marquee with approximately 1000 guests and the whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s who of racing and breeding attending, it really is a spectacle. This year the excitement around the Inglis Guineas and the potential for the Triple Crown bonus to be paid out is building. The Bjorn Baker trained filly, Twilight Royale, is the only contender for the bonus which totals $2.4m for connections. Twilight Royale has won two legs of the Triple Crown - the Inglis Nursery and the Group 2 VRC Siresâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Produce Stakes.

he Girls Day Out race meeting first began back in 2004 when CEO, Lynn Locke and local Dealer Principal of Kinghorn Motors, Geoff O’Connell sat down to decide on a different theme for a Sunday race meeting. After much thought they decided to focus on the ladies and from there the Girls Day Out evolved. Kinghorn Motors have been the major sponsor of this race day since its inception. Now in its 11th year, the Girls Day Out is continuing to be the most popular race day on the SCTC’s racing calendar. Over the years a number of celebrity guests have attended the day. The first Girls Day Out guest was Bec Cartwright who at the time was a very popular Home and Away star. Since then other guests have included Jake Wall, Blair McDonough, Paulini and many more.

The boys spend the day mixing with the crowd, selling calendars and judging the fashions. It’s quite a workload so it was great to see them last year take time out to read the Ladies in Racing Magazine. The Girls Day Out is truly a day for the ladies with the Fashions on the Field proving very popular, offering over $10,000 worth of prizes spread across 4 categories, namely Fashionable Filly (18-35), Glamourous Lady (over 35), Stylish Couple, and Magnificent Millinery. Lynn Locke, CEO, said that the quality of the fashions in 2013 made it particularly difficult to choose winners and placegetters but the firefighters proved to be up to the task choosing from some outstanding entrants. The local ladies always grab the chance to dress up and local businesses are keen to see the girls on the catwalk wearing their fashions. It is amazing also how many ladies travel from far and wide to be part of the Fashions. The 2014 Girls Day Out will have an added attraction which

JAMIE KAH skates on gets her

amie Kah has speed in her genes, but she has taken a different track to the one that brought her parents, John and Karen Kah, Olympic representation as speed skaters and John a gold medal in an Australian world championship team in 1991. Jamie’s speed comes with horse power, and in her first full season of race riding she won the 2012-13 Adelaide premiership as a 17-year-old apprentice. She said her mother got her start on the ice because her parents had a rink in Thebarton, Adelaide, where she (Karen) met John. Jamie got her start on horseback because “Mum and Dad started riding horses in their 30s for fun”. “I was pretty much born on a horse,” she added, later confirming that growing up on one made for an easier introduction to racing. “I could never ice skate,” she said. “I tried, but I wasn’t co-ordinated enough.” In her premiership season Jamie had a win on a flying visit to Melbourne—Highness, trained by her master John MacMillan at Clayton Bay, near Strathalbyn—and this January-February she went 0-21 (to January 28) in Victoria when on loan to Mick Price at Caulfield. Now 18, she spoke to Inside Racing at Caulfield after the first two of four rides that day (January 25—exactly a year after her Highness win) were beaten a head and a short head. “I should be stoked how good they went,” she said of First Print, a $19 chance, and Paaratte Pat ($16), “but I’m not happy—the two were so close.” That drive to succeed helped her to the Adelaide premiership and the most wins in South Australia in 2012-13. After her Melbourne stint it was on to Singapore and three weeks (six meetings) of riding in races at Kranji as reward for being dux of the SA apprentices’ academy, a trip taken over the past four years by fellow riders

Jamie was to ride for Australian trainer Shane Baertschiger and stay with Scott Bailey, a former South Australian jockey who works for the stable. She was hoping to get back to Melbourne for another stretch early in March when her Singapore time was up, to take advantage of the 1.5kg she can claim in town for another eight wins. Price had tried to get her to Melbourne in mid-2013, but although keen to come she stayed at home to sew up the premiership, supported by MacMillan, a former jumps jockey who she said had put her on every stable starter except one for two years. Asked why she wasn’t on that one, Jamie’s matter-of-fact response was, “The owners didn’t want me.” MacMillan and other trainers did want her, and agent Cheree Gask got her on as many horses as she could. Gask (nee Buchiw) rode successfully before her right leg was amputated below the knee after a race accident at Cheltenham (Adelaide) in 2003. “I’m the first (rider) she’s done,” Jamie said. “She’s done a great job, especially towards the end of the premiership. “She still rides (with an artificial limb) at home. She’s got horses at home.” Price, who doesn’t give false praise, said on RSN that Jamie was a beautiful rider. “She’s ridden winners for us in Adelaide, but watching her here in trackwork she really gets horses going well and she has got the best pair of hands on her.” He said later: “She’s a just quality rider, full stop … I’m sure one day she’ll be a leading Melbourne rider.”

Jamie, after finishing third (Wairoa, $12) and fifth (Angelology, $12) on her remaining mounts on January 25, just wanted to lead a field home in Melbourne. She said her initial experiences on horseback were at One Tree Hill, where her parents had a one-acre property and led her around on ponies. The family then moved to Mt Pleasant, where she later met MacMillan. She started going to pony club at four or five and loving the games there. “I got keen and got a Welsh pony,” she said. “Tiny, but very fast.” She said up to 30 sets of mounted games involved bending, turning and vaulting on different ponies. They improved her balance as well as giving her confidence to jump on horses she had never been on before. “It was much easier coming into this game knowing how to ride horses,” she said. “I just had to learn how to ride races.” To the end of her premiership season she had 124 wins from 840 rides, and this season her tally was 33/194 by late January— statistics from formguide.cyberhorse.com.au. Jamie left school in the middle of year 10, but completed her qualifications while at the apprentice academy and working and riding for MacMillan, who trains from a property at Clayton Bay, some 80km south-east of Adelaide, usually going to the track at Strathalbyn one day a week and to the beach at Goolwa another day. (The Adelaide academy is not as intensive as Victoria’s, Jamie saying she went once a month for a couple of hours. She did a project last year on the change in jockey styles, which was highly commended. “I wanted to know more about the history,” she said. “I hadn’t had much to do with racing.”) Jamie’s first ride was third on Miss Fabuleux on March 24, 2012, at Streaky Bay, a 10-hour trip from MacMillan’s stables, an excited

4kg claimer and two horses driven there by her parents. “There was so much adrenalin flowing,” the young rider said. Her first win, on Magic Tigress, came two weeks later on April 7 at Clare, and she turned one into two the same day, also winning on Arthurian Legend, owned by her parents. Four months later she embarked on her premiership season. She said dual premiership winner Clare Lindop “and the girls before” had helped her a lot in a state where the percentage of female jockeys is higher than in other Australian jurisdictions, and she made several references to how much she owed MacMillan for his trust, support and teaching—he and her parents are her biggest backers. As Jamie’s Melbourne experiment showed, there is no resting on laurels and she spoke of the work she needed to do on her strength, her left-handed whip riding and other aspects of her craft—“everything, every day”—to enjoy the Group success that Lindop and the leading male riders have earned. Jamie graduated to Mounted Games and has had international success. Having just turned 15 she was one of five in an Australian team that finished second in the world championships in England, and she went to New Zealand and won two under-17 individual titles. She has won Australian under-15 and under-17 championships, and teamed with Joe Pearson to win two under-17 pairs titles. Jamie rode two winners in her short stay in Singapore and is now back with Mick Price at Caulfield.

Belinda Howard SteppingStones HORSE BUSINESS MANAGEMENT 2008

orses have always been a huge part of Belinda’s family life.

Her mother, Jane Henning, has worked in the racing industry since she was in her early twenties and is a prominent pedigree analyst, planning the matings of eight Group One winners and three Group One place-getters to-date amongst many other class racehorses. Belinda admits that her first love was not the Thoroughbred - it was the pony. However, she’s not alone in that regard - it’s all about proportion! Her passion was riding and she was lucky enough to get her first pony at the age of eight and from there her love developed, along with her riding technique and passion for showjumping. By her final year of high school, Belinda was on the NSW Junior Showjumping Squad and spending every weekend at a different competition with her two horses. She was also riding trackwork before school for a leading Sydney trainer, Tim Martin at Rosehill.

The year at Marcus Oldham took in all aspects of equine and business skills and was a great platform from which to launch a career in the industry. After graduating from the one year intense course, Belinda’s drive for showjumping and travel was still strong and she thought it was time to put her UK passport (her father is English) to good use. She applied online for a job in a large German showjumping stable and boarded a plane to Germany to initially base herself there. After six months in Stuttgart during which she refined her riding style, Belinda travelled to both Portugal and England to ride for stables there. The trip was a wonderful experience on so many levels, but Belinda didn’t see a future in showjumping for her, and it cemented her desire to be a full time participant in the racing industry. Even before she had landed on Australian soil, Belinda had arranged a position on the yearling preparation team at Vinery Stud, also assisting in the breeding season as the relief foal watch attendant.

The belief that she would end up working in the equine industry was ingrained from early on and never weakened.

Although Belinda enjoyed working hands-on with the horses, an exciting opportunity presented itself.

By the time Belinda approached the end of her final year of high school, she was searching through the courses that would give her a leg-up to her chosen field. The passion for showjumping was still there, but the expectation of a long career as a showjumper was waning, and her passion for the high speed and high stakes of racing was increasing. That’s when she discovered Marcus Oldham College and the Australian Thoroughbred Scholarship.

Breeding&Racing Magazine advertised for a ‘recent graduate of a Thoroughbred course’ as an editorial production assistant, which provided a foot in the door to hone her administration and writing skills.

for an interview and was, fortunately, granted not only a position, but also the high value Scholarship.

The position gradually grew in workload and responsibility and, once her writing was up to scratch, she was allocated articles to write for every edition as well as many stallion and yearling profiles for the advertisers.

Articles which stand out in her memory include an interview with renowned bloodstock agent, James Bester, detailing his unbelievable success as a yearling selector; an article on the prominence of Australian buyers at the Keeneland Sales; and another on which qualities the top metropolitan racehorse trainers prize most when selecting yearlings. Belinda found this an interesting one, because everyone’s preferences were so very different! Having met many participants and gaining an insight into some of the most important areas of the racing industry via the research for her articles, she began to get a grasp on the workings of the racing industry. Approaching 18 months of employment with Breeding&Racing, Belinda was introduced to Jason Abrahams, the director of Sydney racehorse syndication company, Champion Thoroughbreds. Jason was on the lookout for someone to front the business as Racing Manager and after a few conversations he invited Belinda to join the team. Champion Thoroughbreds is part owned by leading Sydney trainer, John O’Shea. John and Jason select suitable yearlings for syndication and of course, all are trained by John from his Randwick base. In a nutshell, Belinda’s role is then to market shares in these yearlings and ensure that all owners (up to 20 per horse) are kept constantly informed on their

progress and to arrange race day and other social events to make owning a racehorse as exciting and enjoyable as possible. At present, there are 24 horses under the Champion banner headed by Group 3 winner Lightinthenite who’s looking being an exciting horse in the Spring, among numerous other exciting prospects. It was an entirely new area for Belinda and there was a steep learning curve, but having been at the job now for just under two years, it has really taken shape. Belinda 23 has been given a lot of rein to help grow the business, via client communication and quality of product. This includes the instigation of new initiatives such as ‘jockey cam’, a more in depth website approach, all social media, etc. As with most people’s careers, for Belinda, there were stepping stones which led from one thing to another. The Marcus Oldham Horse Business Management Course was a very important ‘stone’ in that path, and then it was up to her to take advantage of opportunities and work as hard and as smartly as possible. The Dubai World Cup meeting

Dubai

is the richest race day in the world, with a staggering $USD27M on offer over the nine race program. Five Group 1s, three Group 2s and a Group 1 Purebred Arabian race made up the program starting with Race 1 at 4:30pm and the Dubai World Cup at 10:05pm. The famous Opening Ceremony featured a plethora of local talent, followed by an incredible fireworks display before race #7, the Dubai Duty Free.

his year’s Dubai World Cup was filled with highlights and a local Godolphin horse, ‘African Story’, ridden by Silvestre De Sousa, reigned supreme in the feature race of the evening, the $USD10Million Dubai World Cup, in a new track record time. African Story is owned by Dubai Ruler and UAE Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum and trained by Saeed bin Suroor. The 60,000 strong crowd went into a frenzy when African Story was victorious, the media scrum was like no other I have ever seen, with an additional 40 strong entourage surrounding Sheikh Mohammed and his family. It proved also to be a successful night for the Australian breeding industry and Sales Company Inglis & Co, with two Australian-bred Inglis graduates being victorious.

If you are a fan of jumps racing and thoroughbred horse racing in general, then you will find the four day Cheltenham Jumps Festival as exciting as kids having their first experience at Disneyland.

eature races every day, 60,000 strong crowds, massive fields, a plethora of restaurants and bars in downtown Cheltenham and with that mare ‘Quevega’ in action, you couldn’t ask for much more. As a first timer to Cheltenham, nothing can prepare you for the spectacle, the huge crowds and the enormous sized fields. The jockeys milling around on their mounts, eyeballing each other as boxers would before the first round, the roar of the crowd that follows when the starter releases the horses, is something you will remember for a lifetime. The big race of Day One on paper was the Champion’s Hurdle with the biggest jumps owner in the United Kingdom, John P McManus watching his two entrants battle it out with only half a neck separating ‘Jezki’, who reigned supreme over ‘My Tent Or Yours’.

‘Quevega’ As the wonder mare, ‘Quevega’, made her appearance on the track, the roar was intense, an entire crowd united for one horse, one special mare, the kind of cheering and adulation I had not heard since Black Caviar’s last race. Quevega, the superstar, now 10 years old, was to attempt an incredible sixth consecutive mares’ hurdle win. As they completed the last jump, when

Quevega edged in front for the long run up the hill, I am sure the crowd willed her home. Her jockey, Ruby Walsh, was overjoyed, trainer Willie Mullins couldn’t keep the smile off his face and the entire crowd was ecstatic, knowing they had witnessed something so amazing, something that they may never again witness in their lifetime. It’s times and moments like these, that we just stand in awe at the athleticism and determination to win that great thoroughbreds in history all possess. There were three more days of incredible jumps racing action, culminating in the feature race of the Carnival, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, which was held on Day Four. After the gruelling 5,330 metre journey, Lord Windermere, trained by Jim Culloty and ridden by Davy Russell, was victorious in the $500,000 Grade 1 event.

New on t he Sky Racing Team Well known media personality Amelia Oberhardt, fresh-faced and well-embraced in racing and sports, adds a new dimension to Sky Racing’s television screen.

ost recently seen on Channel 9’s Today Show as the in-air traffic reporter direct from a helicopter cockpit, Amelia has had a varied media career with its beginnings in Brisbane while still in high school. Daughter of popular racing and sports journalist Mark Oberhardt, Amelia grew up shadowing her dad from newspaper offices to racetracks and radio stations. She quickly picked up the art of telling a yarn, reporting the facts, and learning the lingo of horses and sport. Her induction via Saturday mornings spent at 4TAB Radio and time spent at her dad’s press desk following in his trail stood her in good stead to become, in her teenage years, a columnist for the Courier Mail. An absolute “all-rounder” in promotions, producing, reporting and sales, Amelia worked her way round radio stations between Brisbane, Sydney and Hobart conducting live crosses

and interviews before being recruited by Channel 9 to be Sydney’s morning peak hour traffic reporter from high in the sky. With racing and rugby in her blood, Amelia’s grandfathers were both involved in racing and her family have been successful racehorse owners over the years. Born in Brisbane, Amelia has always maintained an avid interest in racing and sport and was also reporting for Sky’s Big Sport Breakfast as well as other Sydney radio stations until her recent Sky Racing appointment. Amelia will be the new face of Sky’s magazine programs Bred To Win and Off The Beaten Track bringing a wealth of media experience and equine passion to the chair. Bred To Win resumes on Sky Racing 1 on March 20, while Off The Beaten Track can be seen every Thursday also on Sky Racing 1.

regular Balnarring race crowd certainly needs no enticement away from life’s toil and fray to spend a day at the races. Knowing that any patriotic related headache could be nursed the following day without the obligatory ‘sickie’, as Monday was a day off in lieu, made the day’s festivities, well, all the more festive. Cars were piled high with deck chairs, barbecues, children and bottles of sunscreen. Smiles beamed as large as the traffic backed up along Coolart Road; whilst patrons patiently took their turn to meander up the racecourse drive. In front of Mornington Peninsula grapes on the vine - soon to be wine; amidst the tea tree and gums, punters marked out their place to celebrate with family and friends less than a furlong from the outside fence. The crowd flanked the track from the home turn to the 1600m, not a blade of grass was spared by an Australia Day audience keen to celebrate not just their nationality, but Balnarring Cup day too. As Hanging Rock was a totalized venue, Balnarring was the official ‘Picnic Meeting’ for the day, with the club now racing into its 152nd year. The relaxed atmosphere proved a winner for all to enjoy, as the weather gods smiled down on Emu Plains reserve like they always do, upon the Mornington Peninsula race track that has endless appeal, enticing both young and old. Tom Hafey stalls, the scent about the air mixed hoof oil and barbecues in full fire, all fanned by a gentle Western Port breeze. This provided an Australia Day racing aroma that wafted about the course. Beneath the bookmakers’ umbrellas at the track, the crowd had begun to buzz and then, just prior to the running of the Balnarring Cup, an inescapable silence fell upon Emu Plains as 7,000 people stood to attention, when AFL legend Tom Hafey delivered his Australia Day address. Balnarring Cup jockeys were treated to some Hafey magic too, as Tom gave the amateur rider’s a race day ‘rev-up’ in front of the crowd to send them on their way as pumped up as a

A 7,000 strong crowd filed through the gates on Australia Day this year at Emu Plains Reserve, Balnarring. The Australia Day long weekend for 2014 provided Victorian race goers with plenty of racing opportunities close to Melbourne. With the official public holiday this year falling on a Sunday, punters were spoilt for choice, with race meetings at Yarra Valley, Werribee, Hanging Rock and Balnarring, all within an hour’s drive from the city.

One of Oceanographer’s owners - Rod Lyons had always wanted to win a Balnarring Cup as he lives on the Peninsula.

For both Rod and Tony, winning the Balnarring Cup was just as much a thrill as the many Group One horses they have been associated with over the years. The Cup had more unique occurrences too, with jockeys Darrell Burnett and Anita Bell having their first race rides in the feature picnic event. Darrell was later awarded “Ride of the Cup”, for his bold display leading for most of the race aboard Bright Times trained by Robert Kingston at Mornington. Darrell held his mount and his nerve, showing great tenacity, nearly taking the race. Oceanographer let go with his run in the home straight running down Bright Times, who was gallant in defeat. The 1949 winning Balnarring Cup jockey - Norm McDonell was on hand to congratulate Darrell Burnett for his first race ride and Cup winning jockey Ray Douglas. Form analyst Deane Lester watched his horse, Innovate trained by Robbie Griffiths salute on the day as well. Picnic racing’s star rider - Adam Bodey took out the fifth race with Innovate, holding off Michael Kent junior on Gary Mallinson’s Jive music, in a keenly contested event over 1200 metres.

Other exciting finishes on the day delivered victories to Courtney Pace aboard the Di Clover trained Go Warrior and Clay Beasey on I Boot, trained by his grandfather, Carlo Vidotto. The now International picnic jockey, Dani Walker, found time to come to Balnarring to race away with the first victory of the day, riding the Ray West trained Bubba Lou. Dani represented Australia earlier in the year successfully in Poland as part of the Purebred Arabian Ladies World Racing series, as well at various other locations including the USA and the Gold Coast. The last race of the day went to the Bodey stable, with Adam this time aboard his own mount, Kernel. A big striding chestnut raced by Adam and his partner Kristie, with picnic jockeys having the ability to own and train racehorses, Adam made his family very happy with his double in the sixth.

Australia Day 2014 will long be remembered at Balnarring as the day a Group One stable re-acquainted themselves with some picnic racing magic, under the watchful guise of one of the AFL’s true gentlemen of the game, Tom Hafey. Young and old celebrated alike, whilst picnic rookie Darrell Burnett surprised many with his gutsy bold ride; and “Razor” Ray Douglas delivered to an appreciative crowd a very popular win to take the 2014 Balnarring Cup with the Vasil stable’s Oceanographer.

The VICTORIAN WAKEFUL CLUB

Award

he inaugural Lady of Racing Award was a gala black tie dinner held in the Committee Room of the Moonee Valley Racing Club on the evening of May 19th 1994. The committee held annual Lady in Racing Awards until 1997 when Racing Victoria Limited took over the organisation of the event until 2002. There was no Award in 2003. The Victorian Wakeful Club was established in 2001 by a group of like-minded women, with Marie McCullough at the helm, to encourage the networking and participation of women throughout all facets of the Thoroughbred Industry. The Club was named in honour of the Champion race mare ‘Wakeful’. There were 25 foundation members representing her 25 wins. Membership was soon increased to 44, the number of times Wakeful raced. All members share a common bond – the Thoroughbred Racing and Breeding Industry. In 2004, the members of the Club decided that they would register the name ‘The Victorian Wakeful Club Lady of Racing’ and continue with this prestigious award. The aims of the award remained the same, recognising and honouring women who have made significant contributions to the Thoroughbred Industry. The winner of the first Award was Robin Levett. Subsequent winners have been Shelley Hancox, Joanne Spiers, Anne Carlyon, Helen Cantwell, Emma Boling, Victoria Armstrong, Kerry Gillespie, Jean Purcell, Andrea Leek, Majella Ballantyne, Margaret Lucas, Wendy Kelly, Pauline Liston, Fran Houlahan, Leonie Bibby, Michelle Payne and Penny Reeve last year. The MC for the luncheon was Anthony Mithen, who introduced the current Victorian Wakeful Club President, Jenny Moodie, who welcomed the 350+ luncheon guests. As always the ladies were beautifully attired and the gentlemen in attendance were similarly presented.

The three finalists for the 2013 award were; Gaye Gauci-Marchant, Maree Ryan and Christie Woodard, all well deserving of the title. Each lady was comprehensively interviewed by Anthony about their accomplishments, but sadly there could be only one winner. There was a hush as Racing Victoria Chairman Robert Roulston announced Christie Woodard as the winner. Christie was the recipient of the 2013 Lady of Racing Award Brooch, designed and made by Catanach’s Jewellers, who celebrate over 130 years of excellence. We are sure all will agree that the judging panel had an extremely difficult task. Each finalist received a beautiful bouquet of flowers. CHRISTIE WOODARD Christie was nominated by Thoroughbred Breeder’s Victoria and the award acknowledged her success as a breeder at Yallambee Stud in Romsey, as well as her contribution to the ongoing development of the Thoroughbred Industry through education and new technology. It is her work behind the scenes that brings her the most acclaim. Soon after her introduction to the Breeding Industry over 30 years ago, Christie understood the need for progressive thinking to improve the day to day operations of a successful business and horse stud. She was one of the first to write, develop and implement farm administration and procedural software covering all facets of a horse’s life from foal to yearling to racehorse, to broodmare or stallion, including client communications. Christie has written countless educational articles, handbooks and documents covering the scores of areas involved in the breeding and rearing of the thoroughbred, many of which are widely used

The Victorian Wakeful Club celebrated their annual award for Victoria’s Lady of Racing in the magnificent Myer Mural Hall in Melbourne on Thursday March 13th, 2014. Wangaratta as a nine-year-old, some 40 years ago. Her trademark determination saw her become one of Victoria’s first professional female apprentices in 1979, riding 86 winners in an era of limited opportunities for lady jockeys.

Christie designed and created strapless foal rugs capable of holding IV lines for short or longer periods of fluid therapy, allowing the foal to continue nursing from its mother. These are also now widely used throughout Australia, saving many a foal’s life and improving the quality of care provided. She was also involved in the design of the first ‘on farm’ neonatal intensive care units allowing the mare and foal to remain at ‘home’.

At aged 21, Gaye became travelling foreman for Angus Armanasco, before taking out her own trainer’s license. She trained 147 winners throughout North-Eastern Victoria, Melbourne and Adelaide over a 10 year period. After several years on the sidelines due to illness, Gaye was appointed assistant trainer to Michael Kent in Singapore.

Christie makes it a personal mission to attend every foaling at Yallambee Stud and her knowledge of veterinary procedures is legendary, She has also sourced highly successful bloodstock on behalf of clients as well as enjoying considerable success in her own right on the track and in the breeding barn. With Christie at the helm, The Yallambee Stud yearling team has won numerous awards including the prestigious ‘Best Presented Draft’ at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. Keeping up with the latest veterinary procedures and technology, continually teaching and sharing her knowledge, as well as determining what the thoroughbred public are looking for in their horses will ensure that Christie remains focused on delivering the best. GAYE GAUCI-MARCHANT Gaye, who was nominated by Kathleen Brew, has worked in the Thoroughbred Industry since she began riding trackwork at

Gaye has been a driving force behind the formation of the Victorian Thoroughbred Employee of the Year Awards, the Rider Talent Identification Program and was a committee member of the team who wrote the first racing industry Training Package, ensuring Victoria led the way in industry training, making sure new employees and horses were safe and well cared for. Gaye has been recognised for her many achievements, including a Fellowship from the Specialised Skills Institute/Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, to attend a study of Racing Industry Training in the United Kingdom. In March 2013, Gaye was selected to attend a Super Trades Mission in the Middle East, together with other Victorian Government attendees representing the Equine and Racing Industry in Victoria. This resulted in Gaye being invited to speak at a conference in Abu Dhabi, UAE, late in 2013, where 14 countries signed an agreement to formulate a world’s best practice approach to equine skills training. To be led by Australia, this is now known as the International Horse Racing Skills Passport. She is currently

the Chair and Project Leader of the Racing Industry Provider Network writing this passport. Gaye is also the Thoroughbred Industry Consultant for the National Centre for Equine Education (NCEE) and is a member of Agri-Food Industry Skills Council (AFISC) Racing Industry Standing Committee. One of Gaye’s greatest passions is the non-profit company, ‘Equine Goals & Dreams’which she established with her jockey husband, Ernie Marchant, in 2006. The company assists people of all ages and backgrounds in achieving their own goals and dreams, guiding them through the maze of ‘skilling up’ for a career in the Equine Industry. MAREE RYAN Maree was nominated by Country Racing Victoria. Each and every year more than 3,000+ people flock to Manangatang’s one and only annual race meeting. This figure has grown from 300 or so people just 10 years ago, largely due to the efforts of Maree Ryan. Maree became a volunteer with the Manangatang Racing Club over 40 years ago and has served as an official committee member for the past 15 years. As an experienced committee member, Maree has worked tirelessly to improve facilities including but not limited to, irrigation systems resulting in an improved racing surface, a covered betting ring and ‘The Big Shed’, which is utilised by the whole community for events throughout the year. She has worked diligently to provide a positive experience for all trainers, jockeys, officials, owners, patrons and sponsors to enjoy. Some 20 years ago, Maree initiated and organised ‘live music’ and every year since the music has entertained the crowd between races, with a concert held in in the Big Shed after the last race has been run and won; ensuring patrons stayed on the course. For 10 years Maree has arranged Sponsorships and Judges for the Club’s busy and successful ‘Fashion on the Field’ competition. She also organised a Melbourne based Tour company to have a ‘Package to the Manangatang Races’ at the time when the Club was working hard to build their reputation across Victoria. This has had the added benefit of proving to be extremely successful for the overall promotion of Country Racing Victoria. Maree has played an integral part in helping the people of her

District form a ‘Community Racing Syndicate’ with Swan Hill based trainer, Con Kelly. The syndicate purchased a horse, renamed it ‘Saint Manangatang’ and gave the locals the opportunity to experience the excitement of owning a racehorse. Many of the people had no interest in thoroughbred racing prior to their involvement and some of the original syndicate members now serve on the committee of the Club. Maree is a regular attendee of State and National racing industry conferences, always seeking to gain a broader knowledge of the industry, while sharing her ideas with likeminded people to assist in the growth of country racing. Maree is actively involved in the promotion of Murray Mallee Racing as well as the Manangatang Racing Club. She loves working with the great team of enthusiastic young women and men she has in her district. Her main focus is to assist the younger committee members to have their ideas heard and put into action. Maree has a passion for country racing and is constantly encouraging young women and men to become involved in racing at any level. Due to this encouragement, Manangatang has children from the age of 12 wanting to volunteer their services in the days leading up to and on the day of the town’s one and only annual race day. Maree knows only too well that these young people are the future of country racing. These three ladies are fine examples of the wonderful contribution that ladies bring to the Thoroughbred Industry which is recognised by The Victorian Wakeful Club. Another of the Wakeful Club’s initiatives is their Scholarship Programs for students. Last year’s recipients were Charlotte Jansson from Sweden and Rachel Cousins from Wangaratta who we featured in our Issue # 16. The Victorian Wakeful Club is a staunch supporter of students who are undertaking equine studies/training and has been offering an annual scholarship to a student at the National Centre for Equine Education (NCEE) and the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT). The scholarships at both NCEE and NMIT are awarded to the student who displays a long-term commitment to the Thoroughbred Breeding Industry, their own professional development and who are the most likely to make a positive contribution to the industry. Selection of the recipients is based on criteria of academic performance, practical industry skills and work ethic, attitude and general knowledge of the thoroughbred industry

and student appraisal from the teaching teams and their workplace supervisors. Each scholarship is provided to the recipient for a one-year-period and students are selected annually. The winners of the scholarships for 2014 at both NCEE and NMIT are yet to be announced, but we urge you to check the website www.wakeful.com.au for updates in the next few months. It would be very remiss if we did not mention the Curator of the magnificent Myer Mural Hall. Kenneth W. Park is based in Melbourne and works as a fundraiser, lecturer, curator, tour leader and presenter. He consults for a wide variety of public and corporate organisations over an equally broad range of professional interests. Kenneth gave the audience the most wonderful word picture of the history of the Myer Mural Hall that had everyone listening intently for 15 minutes. His talk was sometimes inspiring, sometimes sad, but always enthralling as (without the benefit of notes), Kenneth told the audience how Sydney Myer came to develop the Myer Mural Hall for the ladies of Victoria and indeed, the world. The Mural Hall was initially completed as a dining room in 1933, just one year before the unexpected death of Sydney Myer at the age of 56. The murals were painted in 1935 by Napier Waller, who was born in Penshurst, Victoria in 1893. He was right-handed, but after joining the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in 1915, he was to be seriously wounded in France in 1916, which resulted in the loss of his right arm, but such was the spirit of the man, while recuperating, he learned to paint with his left hand. Back in Australia Napier Waller established his reputation by exhibiting more paintings. His first major mural was for Melbourne’s Menzies Hotel in 1927. When the hotel was demolished in 1969, the mural was sold privately. He also completed a mural at the Melbourne Town Hall in that year and The State Library of Victoria accepted his mural Peace After Victory in 1928. Later in his life Waller was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1953 and was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1959. He died in 1972 at the age of 88, a truly remarkable man. As a Curator of Collections at Melbourne’s Wesley College, Kenneth manages the school’s extensive art and archival collections. He consults in both the corporate and public sectors in philanthropic fundraising (especially in planned giving), as well as marketing, sponsorship, art, membership/loyalty and public relations. An inveterate traveller making at least 10 overseas trips each year, he lives by the motto – “Life is a grand tour so make the most of it”. Kenneth’s tertiary studies include political science, administration, museum studies, industrial relations, fine arts, history and international relations; he has a passion for travel, food, wine, arts, architecture, history and good conversation…essentially the good life. Racing Victoria (RV) is celebrating the increasing engagement, contribution and achievements of women in the thoroughbred racing industry. Female participation rates in the Victorian thoroughbred racing industry are at an all-time high and RV has made further growth a key objective in its recently released three-year strategic plan, Racing For The Future. Key statistics around women in the Victorian thoroughbred racing industry include: • In 2004 there were 23 female riders in Victoria (including apprentices, picnic, jumps and senior riders). This represented 10% of the jockey population. • In 2014 there are 50 female riders in Victoria. • Five female jockeys have won Group 1 races in Australia (Michelle Payne, Nikita Beriman, Kathy O’Hara, Clare Lindop & Lauren Stojakovic). • The 2014 Racing Victoria Apprentice Jockey Training Program saw a record female intake. It was up from 5 females / 10 inductees in 2013, 5/11 in 2012 and 2/12 in 2011. • Of 3,249 registered Victorian stable employees in 2014, 49% are female. • 41% of Victorian race clubs (representing metropolitan, country and picnic racing clubs) are managed by women. RV Chief Executive, Bernard Saundry, said the record female participation was pleasing and that it was a fitting time to recognise their contribution to the sport in Victoria. “Women are now at the forefront of the Victorian thoroughbred racing industry – they are playing an increasingly important role in our sport and we are committed to furthering female participation both on and off the track,” Mr. Saundry said. He continued, “Thousands of women across the state are now participating in the sport in a range of vocations such as riders, trainers, strappers, farriers, vets, owners, breeders and administrators. There’s also a strong band of female fans which increases throughout the Spring Racing Carnival.It’s been fantastic to see the advancement of women across all areas of racing during the last decade, in particular the increase in our riding ranks, and International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to shine a light on the many females who have contributed to the industry and inspired others through their achievements.” Victorian jockey ranks have seen the strongest increase in female participation over the last 10 years - with the number of female jockeys doubling to 50, which is 22 percent of the state’s riding population. A record number of females were inducted into RV’s Apprentice Jockey Training Program this year, with six females among the nine inductees; indicating it’s a trend that will continue into the future. “Over the past decade we have worked hard to ensure the thoroughbred racing industry is an Australian sporting leader in gender equality. It is one of the very few sports where women and men can compete on a level playing field,” Mr. Saundry said. “Racing Victoria is constantly striving to increase engagement in racing and we’re committed to continuing to grow the level of female participation across all areas of the sport. From Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Gai Waterhouse to our first year apprentice jockeys, we have females who are inspiring the next generation right across our industry and it’s fitting that we promote and acknowledge their achievements as part of International Women’s Day.”

ecoming Australia’s first accredited female race judge was a dream come true for the young Natashia Radford, who has her finger in nearly every pie when it comes to Australia’s racing industry. A project administrator throughout the week, this passionate 25 year old horse aficionado received her first taste of riding when she was in primary school and hasn’t looked back since. “From the age of eight years I started horse riding on the school holidays with the encouragement from my Nanna,” said Natashia, who is now based just outside of Canberra at Bywong in New South Wales, as she related to Ladies In RACING magazine. Spurred on by her encouraging Nanna, Natashia has gone from a casual rider to a fully qualified race judge qualified by Racing NSW, proving that women really can do it all. “This judging position is a dream come true,” Natashia said. I am so passionate about it and it never feels like a day of work”, she continued. It’s not just via judging horses that Natashia hopes to make a name for herself, but also through ownership as well. She owned her first horse when she was just 12, but it was no track star. In fact it was blind in one eye and a far cry from the two year old Bel Danaro filly, out of a Breeders Cup mare who she hopes to race later this year. As well as that promising juvenile, Natashia, who secured her judging accreditation in early March, also hopes to get into the breeding sector via a nice Black-Type broodmare named Elegant Lass. The largest part of Natashia’s career with the ponies however has been through dressage, eventing and show jumping on retired race horses. While her family has never been heavily involved in the equestrian arena, they have been involved in a number of Syndicates. Those syndications saw them enjoy success with some class winning gallopers in both Brisbane and on the Gold Coast. Natashia rode at the Australian Dressage Championships in 2009 and still regularly competes in similar events to this day.

She’s also no stranger to some of Australia’s biggest names in racing, including the Melbourne Cup King Bart Cummings, 12 time winning trainer of ‘the race that stops a nation’, for whom she worked as a stable hand in 2007. NZ Racing Hall of Fame inductee Graeme Rogerson, another of Australasia’s most experienced and successful horse trainers, also had her on as a pony rider until the equine influenza hit.

As well as stable hand, Natashia’s other titles over the years have included polo groom, riding school teacher and pool supervisor at Thoroughbred Park in Canberra where she has been based for the last three years. It hasn’t all been straight riding for her however, with setbacks and injuries plaguing her at times. “I’ve broken both my ankles from riding accidents,” Natashia said. “My first accident was on a horse that was trouble for the previous owner and I was told if I could catch it, I could keep it! Unfortunately I caught it and it also caused me some trouble. Some tough lessons make you smarter, and you gain a respect for the animals that you deal with.” Those lessons and that respect are both things she now hopes to bring to her judging career in between her other loves. “In my spare time after my competition horses, I’ve skied overseas, love scuba diving and have a handy golf handicap,” she said. Natashia is certainly a multi-talented young lady!

As a new teenager I witnessed my first Melbourne Cup in 1945, two months after the end of the Second World War.

When ‘Rainbird’, a four-year-old chestnut mare, bred in South Australia (SA) by Clifford A Reid, trained by local Sam Evans and ridden by Billy Cook was successful, little did I know at the time that I would one day become involved in Ladies in RACING magazine due to her wonderful win.

continued my yearly trip to Flemington for the next seven years before service in the Royal Australian Navy took me away from Victoria and finished my Cup sequence. One of my most memorable Cups was the win in 1950 by Comic Court in race record time. He was bred by the Bowyer brothers at their Neire Stud, Normanville, South Australia. Initially he was retained by the breeders, but was later sold to R A, J C and A J Lee. Comic Court was trained by Jim M Cummings, ridden by one of South Australia’s best jockeys, Pat Glennon and Jim’s legendary son Bart was the strapper. Pat won the race at his first ride in ‘the race that stops a nation’. Pat had five more rides in the Cup in the 50’s before piloting Macdougal to victory in 1959.

Rainbird wins by 2½ lengths over her 25 rivals in 1945 In his first start after the Melbourne Cup, Comic Court was successful over six furlongs (1200m). He was later to sire ‘Comicquita’, the daughter of the very talented mare ‘Chiquita’, who ran second to him in the 1950 Cup. Comicquita ran second to Even Stevens in the 1962 Melbourne Cup. South Australia’s next victory in the Melbourne Cup, ‘Gatum Gatum’ in 1963, was an all SA win, as the five-year-old brown gelding was owned and bred by 80-year-old Malcolm Reid, who emulated his Brother Clifford’s win with Rainbird 18 years earlier. Gatum Gatum was trained by H G (Graeme) Heagney and ridden by another great SA jockey, Jim Johnson. J B (Bart) Cummings success in the Melbourne Cup has been well documented. His achievement of a record 12 wins in the iconic race may never be equalled. His first success in 1965

was with ‘Light Fingers’ who was ridden by Roy Higgins. Who is to say that Bart, now racing in partnership with his son Anthony’s son James, doesn’t have at least one more win in the future? After his 1963 success with Gatum Gatum, in 1968 Graeme Heagney was to play a part in the win of ‘Rain Lover’ in the first of his two Cup wins in successive years. Graeme trained the 1967 Caulfield Cup winner, ‘Tobin Bronze’, who also won two Cox Plates, each win with Jim Johnson aboard. Several months before the Melbourne Cup was to be run, Graeme was asked and agreed to a request from the owners of Tobin Bronze to accompany the horse to the United States of America (USA), where he would continue his racing career. Mick L Robins, who was Graeme Heagney’s foreman at the time of his leaving for the USA, obtained his trainer’s licence just three months before he took over Rain Lover’s conditioning. It is now history that Rain Lover won the 1968 Melbourne Cup by a record eight-length margin in the then record time of 3.19.1 and repeated his win in 1969, the first horse to win consecutive Cups since Archer won the first two Cups run in 1861/62. On both occasions Rain Lover was ridden by Jim Johnson and in 1969 he carried the burden of 9 st. 7 lbs (60.5 kgs). Like Rainbird, Rain Lover was bred and owned by Clifford A Reid. The next win for a South Australian was when the very popular John Letts rode the Tasmanian owned ‘Piping Lane’ to victory in the 1972 Melbourne Cup, trained by George Hanlon. John repeated his success in 1980 when he piloted ‘Beldale Ball’, trained by Colin S Hayes. John has been involved for many, many Melbourne Cup Carnivals riding ‘Banjo’, interviewing all the winning jockeys after their races. Colin repeated his success in 1986 with the import ‘At Talaq’ (Michael Clarke).

Shocking winning from Crime Scene in 2009 In 1979 Colin was the trainer of the 3/1 Cup favourite, ‘Dulcify’ who had won the Cox Plate by a record seven lengths ridden by Brett Thomson. Brett was again on board Dulcify in the Cup when tragically he broke down and had to be euthanized. Colin’s youngest son David was to win his Melbourne Cup in 1994 with Wayne Harris aboard the Great Britain bred ‘Jeune’ and owned by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. David Hall was the trainer of the mighty mare, ‘Makybe Diva’ when in 2003 she won her first Cup, ridden by Glen Boss. She was owned by South Australian Tuna fisherman, Tony Santic, who purchased her mother, the Great Britain born ‘Tugela’ with the foal at foot, after she had arrived in Australia. When David Hall relocated to Hong Kong, Makybe Diva was transferred to the stable of Lee Freedman. Winning the Cup again 2004 and 2005 gave the super mare the honour of being the only horse to complete a three-peat and she is the only mare among the multiple winners.

In 2009, Mark Kavanagh an ex jumps jockey, who started training in Mt. Gambier before moving to Adelaide, then on to Melbourne, trained ‘Shocking’ to win with Corey Brown in the saddle. Mark, who once lived next door to Bart Cummings in Adelaide, has quickly made his name in Victoria and has trained many top line gallopers, including Atlantic Jewel and Maldivian. he overall winner of Fashion at The Races has been declared with Jayde Foote from Adelaide representing Murray Bridge Racing Club taking out the coveted title of South Australia’s best dressed racegoer and winning a holiday of a lifetime. The Schweppes Oaks Day at Morphettville attracted a bevy of stylish and immaculately dressed ladies, but only one could be crowned the winner and take home a trip for two to Paris. Jayde impressed all of the judges with her impeccable ensemble, making her a stand-out in the final competition.

Coming in at a very close second, in almost a photo finish moment, was Claudia Rogosich, who was representing the SAJC - Melbourne Cup Day Races, from Adelaide who shone in her divine dress with millinery that perfectly complemented her look. The event’s judging panel, including fashion designer Liza Emanuele, Antimo Iannella from the Advertiser and Kate Freebairn from 10 News, had the unenviable task of trying to select a winner from a stunning group of contenders who had all been declared fashion victors at various race meets around the State over the past 12 months. The 16 finalists were judged on appropriateness of the outfit for the particular event, originality and confidence, attention to detail with accessories, appreciation of current fashion trends, grooming and deportment. Thoroughbred Racing SA Marketing Manager Jane Wellington, also a judge, said the decision was not a simple one. “The finalists looked incredible, it was clear that they had put in an impressive amount of effort to take home the ultimate accolade and five star holiday,” she said. “We were looking for that real ‘wow-factor’ – someone who dressed with class, style and a touch of personality and Jayde is to be congratulated on her superb personal presentation – she was most definitely deserving of the title.” As well as assuming the title of best dressed racegoer, Jayde also received

business class return flights for two people to Paris plus five nights’ accommodation in a five star hotel, a new set of luggage, two full days of luxury fashion tours and tickets to a fashion show. Claudia, as runner-up received an extravagant shopping spree at selected retailers on King William Road, Hyde Park valued at $5,000. “Fashion at The Races has once again affirmed its status as an event not to be missed as it encompasses all that we love – city glamour, country style and regional pride,” Jane said. Last year it was Emerald Green and in 2012 it was Tangerine Tango. For the “Year of the Horse” it’s Radiant Orchid. Pantone Inc., the global authority on colour, named the PANTONE® 18-3224 Radiant Orchid as the official colour of 2014 on Dec. 5, 2013. PANTONE® 18-3224 Radiant Orchid is described as a pigment between a bold fuchsia and deep purple – almost identical in colour to the flower; “a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple.”

Pantone Color Institute® executive director Leatrice Eiseman elaborated ,”While the 2013 colour of the year, PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the colour wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” “An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.” Eiseman added. “An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. The build-up of attention towards Radiant Orchid began in February 2012 by Raf Simons, the former creative director at Jil Sander, who is now with Christian Dior. Raf hinted at the shade in his final autumn/winter 2012 collection for Jil Sander, with touches on sleeves, in the lining of oversized coats and even in the lipstick. Jil was reported saying backstage: “It’s strong, but delicate at the same time.” By the time Raf Simons moved to Christian Dior, he was infusing the rich colour even more into his design palette and a year later the rest of the fashion pack caught on with designers such as Chanel, Gucci, Temperley and Preen joining the Radiant Orchid brigade. International designers have also incorporated Pantone’s new shade into their collections. The Dubai-based Madiyah Al Sharqi, whose collection stood out at Fashion Forward, mixed the pigment with yellows and oranges for a truly refreshing spring collection. Al Sharqi chose a brighter, more neon shade of Radiant Orchid juxtaposed with crisp white panelling. The Sharjah-based Essa Bhagoorwala of Essa designed ruffled, tiered dresses and coats using the same shade, but added a new element by using an unusual fabric similar to neoprene to create the illusion of volume. My Story – Wendy White

very girl dreams of doing something when they are little. My passion was sewing and fashion. I had my first sewing machine when I was around 6 years old. My father would tell you there were never any rags in his rag bag, and my mother never had any Chux cleaning cloths in the drawer because I would steal them to turn them into some wild creation.

I never knew of millinery and hat making until I answered an ad in the paper for a machinist to make fabric hats back in 1997. This was my introduction to hat making, working for Helen Bekinsale. In 2000 due to health issues, Helen sold her business to me and this is where it all started for me. I scrapped most of Helen’s hats and went on to designing and making fabric hats. I still make and sell these hats today, in my shop in Rockhampton. Looking back, it has been an interesting journey. When I started working for Helen I had two children and we had just bought a property about 45 minutes out of Rockhampton - “Edanvale” a 540 acre property. Making hats was a way to still work from home and take care of my young family. By the time I bought Helen’s business I had three children. By the end of 2001 I was supplying 35 stores in Queensland with my fabric hats. I was taking hat orders from my hospital bed in Gladstone when I had my fourth child in 2001! All my children have grown up with me doing markets and shows. One could say they grew up under the table. We covered some 50,000 km a year and one to two shows in a weekend. At the beginning of 2004 I met Waltraud Reiner, a Melbourne based milliner who was teaching with Flying Arts. I attended a 3 day course with her and discovered there was much, much more to millinery then just fabric hats. Halfway through 2004, we sold Edanvale and took the whole family on the road. My husband became chief truck driver and salesman. My job was still making hats and home schooling 3 of my children. For 18 months we travelled Queensland and the Northern Territory to

attend agricultural shows and other events selling our hats. It was a bit like a travelling circus - our families all told us we were mad.

At the end of 2006 we returned to Rockhampton and I set up a small shop doing mending, alterations, making hats, and still venturing out to markets and shows. At the beginning of 2007 I attended the first International Millinery Forum held at Wagga Wagga NSW and met the wonderful master milliner Neil Grigg from Sydney. In the middle of that year I returned to Wagga Wagga to attend winter school and Neil was teaching racewear. It was there that I struck up the most wonderful mentorship and friendship with him and for many years I have been under his watchful eye. I would travel to Sydney to work in his backroom so that I could hone my skills. Thank you Neil. Without you I would not be the milliner I am today. Today I have a collection of awards and certificates. In 2011 I received my Certificate 3 and 4 in Millinery from Brisbane TAFE. I have in the past few years put my work and design skills as a milliner out there to be judged by my peers, with some great outcomes. In 2008 and 2009 I was awarded the “Hatty Award” from Hatlife in the USA for dedication and innovation to the headwear industry, and again in 2012 I received an Honourable Mention. I made the final 14 designers for the UK Hat Designer of the year in 2010 and 2012 out of a field of over 60 designers from all over the world. In 2012 I also won Best Hat at the International Millinery Forum. Over the past 10 years I have had many clients win Fashions on the Field and millinery awards at local races here in Rockhampton and around Australia. I am always delighted to hear the excitement and feedback from them. Remember when it comes to dressing for the races it is not about the dress or the hat, it is about the whole look from head to toe - it must tell a story.

The most unusual hat I made was for the MC of the “Tight Line Fishing Class” an annual event held to raise funds for the Yeppoon Coast Guard. Big Al’s hat was a real winner, everyone loved it. We put it up for Auction and Big Al bid on it so he could keep it.

Everything I create is unique and as individual as the people who wear them, with quality and line in the design important key factors. Your hat or headpiece is like icing on a cake. It lifts the outfit and adds a finishing touch. My race hat and headpieces are available from my studio in Rockhampton and my online store. IT’S GOING TO BE A RED HOT WINTER All shades of red will be the “in” colour for Winter 2014, according to the fashion pundits.
