From the Editor ... Welcome to the first issue of Australasian Women In Racing, quarterly coverage of the feminine facets of the sport. As well as seeking to inform women of the attractions and machinations of a fascinating industry, we will try to capture the characters and spirit of the people who make the horse racing world a colourful, dynamic landscape. The social realm is equally important. We will present the pick of the parties, carnivals and fashion on the field. In this issue, we have focused on two of the leading ladies whose roles behind the scenes cannot be underestimated: June Bailey, wife and business partner of the highly successful trainer, Alan, shares with us her decades in the game. It really has become a family affair, with both her adult children firmly entrenched in the field and even her five small grandkids avid spectators; and Annie McDonald, a firm fixture at Magic Millions, in charge of the international branding, marketing, media and much of the calendar at not just the Gold Coast’s premium annual sales and racing event, but the Magic Millions involvement in the myriad of sales around the country each year. The fact that Annie still manages to fit in learning to play polo should be motivation to us all. We hope you enjoy Australasian Women In Racing and would like to invite you to submit any story suggestions, ideas for content, people to profile and of course your social pictures. Please get in touch. We are aiming to bring you a magazine that inspires the community it reflects.

Joke of the Day ... A woman was considering buying an aging thoroughbred but wanted a veterinarian’s opinion of the horse before finalising her deal. She asked when the vet had completed his examination “Will I be able to race him?” The veterinarian looked at the woman, then at the horse. “Sure” he replied, “and you’ll probably win!”

Women In Racing Inc. (a separate identity to Australasian Women In Racing) is a unique organisation formed by Jennie Campbell-Bartels and Baslyn Beel in 2005. It’s aim is to generate women’s interest in all facets of the horse racing industry, including breeding, syndication, ownership, stud tours, fashion, understanding “how to bet” and social events. As well, they have established Racing Welfare as the vehicle through which support is provided for those in the racing industry whose lives have unfortunately been touched by injury or death.

DARLING DOWNS TOOWOOMBA RACING CLUB SATURDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER, 2006

S

everal members ventured to Toowoomba for the official launch of our club. held over the annual Fitton’s Insurance Race Day. This was made possible with the backing of the TTC CEO, Mr Gavin McEvoy who organised his staff as well as the Committee Room for the morning tea. Our guest of honour was our lady apprentice jockey, Miss Amy Taylor, who has been selected to be the first recipient of our “Women In Simon, Amy Taylor, Baslyn Beel and Jennifer Campbell-Bartels Racing Recognition Award.” Amy was presented with a riding saddle from the results of our fund raising. We shall always be with Amy, WIR Inc being embossed on the side of this racing saddle. Simon ... from Smartbet made his way to Toowoomba for the presentation. Smartbet, under the management of Richard Fewster nominated our club as their charity, for three months, with Mr Racing placing $50 weekly on his tips. The wonderful amount of $1002 was handed to Women In Racing Inc. Our thanks go to Richard and his team for considering us. The next item for Amy will be riding boots which will be presented to her on 10th January, 2007 at the Champagne Jennifer Campbell-Bartels, Amy Taylor and Baslyn Beel Breakfast. The afternoon followed with the Fittons’s Race Day. Ladies we can thoroughly recommend this weekend as it is actioned packed from the time we hit the Villa Nova Motel! Del Fitton, the main organiser of the weekend, ensured our weekend would be memorable and it certainly was just that. Rio Carnivale was the marquee theme and our members were simply the star attraction on the day. Donna Sheldrick and Norma Ewen brought the house down with their innovative costumes and the Toowoomba press loved us for our individuality. The following day saw us up early for a lovely morning tea Amy Taylor

as guests of the Frappells at their Clearmountain Fairview stud. The stud farm was in near perfect condition having experienced such a severe drought. We were all suitably impressed with the facilities, hospitality and of course, the fine parade of the standing stallions, as well as their new offspring . This was followed by the Hall of Fame racing awards, held at the Toowoomba Showgrounds. Pam O’Neill leading retired lady jockey was inducted into the Hall of Fame and her recognition helps us to reinforce our position as Women In Racing. Well done Pam! Up bright and early Monday and three buses later we all headed to the Studs on the Darling Downs. Each stop we were welcomed and the hospitality again was outstanding. We visited Eureka Stud, hosted by the legendary McAlpine family, Plaintree Farms where Heather Pascoe greeted us and related the history of the establishment, Oasis Farm and the respected trainer, Ron Maund told of his successful training methods and the unforgettable luncheon held in the pristine stables of Highgrove Stud as guests of Ron and Debbie Gilbert. The final stop was to visit the Stewarts’ Oaklands Stud. We ere treated to a special event whilst sipping our wines at sunset. Almost on cue, a Pure Theatre filly was born, a fitting finale to a fabulous tour. A fantastic day and our appreciation to Mrs Del Fitton and her committee.

MELBOURNE CUP HELD AT THE TATTERSALL’S BALLROOM BRISBANE ON 23RD OCTOBER 2006

W

omen In Racing Inc. has certainly raised the standards of racing events following the second outstanding Victorian Racing Club’s only officially endorsed luncheon in Queensland. The main star of the day was the 2006 Emirates Melbourne Cup that was positioned overlooking the crowded Tattersall’s ballroom. With the formalised agreement between VRC, Hardy Brother’s Jewellers, Emirate Airlines and our club, this will be held again for the commencement of the Victorian Spring Carnival, 2007.

As a ladies club that only wants the “best” we should feel very proud of our recognition within the racing industry and wish to thank all concerned. The successful morning commenced with a large gathering of guests at the Gold Coast Turf Club for the bus trip to Brisbane. Kerry Craig’s staff hosted our travellers Judy Brine, Effie Cliff – Photographer: Ata Taefi with champagne and coffee and made all feel special in her boutique which was greatly appreciated by all present. Our VIP’s included Mr Joe McGrath, Marketing Manager, VRC, Mr Stuart Bishop, CEO, Hardy Brothers’ Jewellers, and Jenny Trebilcock, State Manager, Emirate Airlines who all added the “posh” atmosphere on the day. Mr Peter Cook, past Melbourne Cup winning jockey, who rode Black Knight was presented with a miniature solid gold cup on behalf of the VRC and Hardys. His speech reminisced of his memorable and courageous win when he rode for the late Robert Holmes A’Court. A touching moment came when Peter was handed two more miniature cups for his late father. Happy recipients of the fabulous raffles included Janelle Lakey, wife of successful Deagon based trainer who won the airline tickets for two, kindly donated by Emirate Airlines, to Auckland. Janelle intends to take in the Karaka Horse Sales next year. Mr John McCoy, Committee member for Tattersall’s and leading sport commentator held the ballroom guests captivated with his oration on “Why it stops the nation”. A retentive memory with a wealth of information, John entertained the room. Stuart Bishop told of the process in the manufacturing of the “Icon”, whilst Joe McGrath paved the way for the Cup’s travels throughout Australia. Dale Olsson’s Hat Box fantastic millinery was displayed confidently by her gorgeous models and our ladies were most appreciative of the glamour added to by the million dollar display of jewellery from Hardy’s. Our Honorary MC Ken Hose excelled in his usual elegant manner by ensuring the programme for the day flowed. We are indeed so privileged to have him on our team. AUSTRALASIAN WOMEN IN RACING

General Bloodstock sales are held every second Friday of the month at the complex as a general rule, excepting months when a big major sale is underway. Magic Millions offices in Adelaide, South Australia and Perth, Western Australia also conduct year round monthly and private sales. Private sales are conducted almost every day of the year, whether it is the private sale (not at public auction) of million dollar horse flesh to eager buyers off-shore or the fulfilling of major export orders to countries requiring bloodstock for racing and/or breeding. SUSANNE MESSARA SELECTED AS FACE OF THE 2007 MAGIC MILLIONS

S

The first Magic Millions Gold Coast sale was held in 1986 it consisted of a catalogue of only 220 yearlings. It was a staggering success, not only because the average of $30,000 was well above expectations, but because top racehorses emerged at an extraordinary rate from this and subsequent Magic Millions Sales. Now, Magic Millions sells in excess of 8500 horses a year and boasts sales over $213 Million annually, the January Gold Coast sale in 2006 averaged over $140,000 per yearling and accounted for $93 Million of the annual company returns. David Chester, Managing Director of Magic Millions commented, “This record is second to none in comparison with any other bloodstock sales around the world.” The success stories from Magic Millions are to numerous to mention ... but one thing is for sure the Magic Millions company has ensured wherever you travel internationally everyone knows about the Magic Millions.

ydney based glamour, Susanne Messara has been selected as the “Face of Magic Millions” for the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Sales and Carnival to be held on the Gold Coast in January 2007. The 22 year-old events co-ordinator follows in the stilettoed footsteps of supermodels Kristy Hinze and Jacqui Rickards, Olympic swimmer Giaan Rooney and last year’s Carnival ambassador the beautiful Michelle Guy, a former Miss Universe Australia. In April this year Susanne first came to public attention on Golden Slipper day at Rosehill racecourse, when she led in Miss Finland the winner of the world’s richest two-year old race worth over $3Million in prize-money. Miss Finland was bred and is part-owned by her father, iconic industry leader John Messara, and Susanne alongside her mother Kristine experienced one of the greatest highs in racing at Rosehill that day. “Leading Miss Finland in was one of the most unique experiences of my life. To win the Golden Slipper on its 50th anniversary in front of such an enormous crowd was truly overwhelming”, Ms Messara said. “The biggest thrill of the day for me was seeing my father’s face when Miss Finland crossed the line. He’s put an extraordinary amount of time and energy into the industry and we were all so happy and proud of him”. “I am delighted to have been offered this role at the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Carnival. I have attended the carnival with my family for as long as I can remember and have so many fond memories of summers gone by. The Magic Millions Carnival is now an internationally recognised event in the racing community and it is an absolute pleasure to be a part of it”. David Chester, Managing Director of the Magic Millions company said. “We are very excited to welcome Susanne as the Face of the Magic Millions Carnival in 2007 – she has a background in horses and understands the thoroughbred industry. Susanne is studying media and marketing, and these interests will equip her well for this role. In horse industry terms she has a blue-blood pedigree and is very well suited to the task”, Mr Chester said. The Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Yearling Sales will commence from Thursday 11th January, and continue through until Friday 19th January. A total of eight days of Yearling Sales will see over 2000 horses sold and again the international interest in Magic Millions is enormous. The “rich and famous” flock from around the world to experience the Magic Millions event in January on the Gold Coast, and 2007 is set to be bigger than ever. On track a record $3.5 million prize-money will be won on the feature day. Further information on the Magic Millions Carnival and Sales Contact 07 5538 8933 or visit www.magicmillions.com.au

IT’S A HIGH STAKE GLAMOUR AFFAIR By Karen Phillips

F

or a whirlwind 19 days in January, the Gold Coast stops to play host to one of the world’s premier racing carnivals. The spectacular Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions program has gained a reputation as one of the most prestigious events on the racing calendar and this year it’s set to be bigger and bolder than ever, with a jam packed calendar for the jet setters and locals alike. In a sensational program of racing, parties, dinners and yearling sales culminating in the ‘world first’ All Magic Millions Race-day, Australia’s tourism capital comes alive with a host of international and interstate visitors who come to partake in the events. It’s a feast of fashion and the Coast is alive with a vibrancy that’s unique to this carnival – now one of the biggest racing events in the world. While the party atmosphere is electric, the stakes are high and not just in the sales yard or racing track. Get ready ladies and gents – dust of the Jimmy Choos, slip on some fabulous jewels and frock up – it’s racing time and the competition is fierce! If you think horse racing is all about ponies then think again. Parading fillies and colts are certain to catch your eye over this exciting time. Dressed to the nines, they’ll be dripping from head to toe in ‘bling bling darlink’ and with Paspaley Pearls as one of the major sponsors, gals are grabbing their grannies old fashion strings to ensure they keep up with the Jones while the fellows are dusting off Grandad’s best silk hankie. Couple that with amazing design labels, hats and fascinators that vary from the savvy to the outright avant garde – and it’s a menagerie of high fashion stakes on and off the track. 8

Women and men from around the country are busy preening themselves in the hope to take out the biggest prize of all – the Best Dressed of the Carnival. With the Paspaley Best Dressed Lady and Bang & Olufsen Best Dressed Gentleman– the titles include over a $65,000 prize booty. So why not throw your hat into the ring so to speak and get yourself along to the featured social events to be eligible for this special award. Ladies must attend at least one of the five listed social events of the carnival while men need to be present at one of the four listed formal occasions. Take your pick – the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Official Opening Night Party, The Gold Coast Bulletin Business Breakfast (male award only), the Marriott Hats and High Tea (lady award only), the Sheraton Magic Millions Luncheon, Women In Racing Breakfast or the Magic Millions Paspaley Magic Millions VIP Room or Conrad Jupiters Dome on race day. A finalist from each of these premier events will be chosen and invited to attend the final line where the finalists prizes are presented in gala style. So here’s your chance to be a million dollar baby! What’s stopping you? Like with every good race you need a good tip straight from the horses mouth – so here you have it. Look fresh and inviting, not too much skin. Summer colours and a hint of glam, stockings on or off for the ladies (depends on your fetlocks I always say). Shoes and bag don’t have to match but they need to be special. And for men well-suited or no tie, it’s entirely up to you. Good luck – as it’s anyone’s race! AUSTRALASIAN WOMEN IN RACING

y n o h p A SymOF STALLIONS (MUSIC TO A HORSE LOVER’S EARS) By Jennifer Campbell-Bartels

I

f the names Zabeel, Stravinsky, Savabeel, Pins, Pentire, Thorn Park Falkirk and Kings Chapel are music to your ears, then Gold Coast thoroughbred racing created a symphony for their exclusive stud and racing tour which took in five days of racing, stallion viewing, stud facilities, as well as the Ellerslie racing, at Auckland. As usual, the highest of standards were addressed during this fabulous first class tour incorporating Cambridge Stud, Waikato Stud, Windsor Park, Rich Hill and Westbury Studs. Prominent hosts at the respective farms embraced our select group of 20 with warm hospitality, fine food and detailed tours of both facilities, and the chance to view close up the most magnificent stallions, including both New Zealand based, as well as the shuttle sires.

14

The Ellerslie Racing Club directors and members should be justly proud of their first class establishment set amidst some of the most picturesque scenery in the North Island. Our group relished the fine food and hospitality in the chairman’s room. The standard of the venue would be a fitting example for many of our Australian racing clubs to follow as comfort would be perhaps the best we have experienced. Directors made us feel totally at home and were thrilled at our reaction to their treasured club. Notable racing personalities along the way kept us informed of the outstanding kiwi studs and their ability to produce successful thoroughbreds that have been recognised throughout the thoroughbred world. Sir Patrick Hogan, the perfectionist in every way, hosted us to the most memorable stud tour, in my opinion having visited some of the worlds best.

The Emirates Melbourne Cup

AND STUDS

The Emirates Melbourne Cup, Flemington was the scene for our members who gravitated to the famous lawns to view, apart from the horses, the overwhelming fashion stakes. Effie Cliff, Dale Olsson and Josephine Juliano represented our club on the catwalk, all looking thoroughly gorgeous and ever so classy. Margaret Lenehan, Jennifer Bartels, Kerrina King, Helen Ryan, Ebony McCleod and Judith Eleanor chose instead, to sip the French Champagne, indulge in the fine foods and soak up the fashion and equine atmosphere. Don’t let anyone tell you it was a cold Melbourne Cup! It was warmed by the presence of the Queensland fillies.

Wakefield Ladies Club, Flemington Jennifer Bartels has made great progress with the Wakefield Ladies Club and shall meet soon with the President, Mrs Barbara Duff, to discuss aims to include each club via newsletters, functions, Spring Carnival, etc. The recently held luncheon in the Members Stand invited Craig Williams to do the presentation to the recipient of the Wakefield Awards. Prominent ladies from all areas of racing, eg, Chairman of a racing club, jockeys, publishers, trainers, strappers and vets all added to this prestigious day. Women In Racing Inc. shall look further into this type of luncheon to include the many women who play an integral role in the industry. Barbara mentioned that the club has only that event and is very keen to learn more from our club mentioning how impressed she was at the amount of functions we hold annually and the prestigious recognition we have earned.

His welcoming address and the showing of his finest stallions in an idyllic setting has left an impression on all of us. The Sir Tristram story told by Sir Patrick actually had many with a little tear in their eyes due to the passion Sir Patrick and Lady Justine had for the founder of the most successful and respected stud in New Zealand and of course Australasia. Zabeel, of course won our hearts. At Rich Hill, another showpiece property, John and Colleen Thompson exuded warmth and a grand welcome for the group. Pentire, the leading flag waver for the stud, gave us all a taste of what a grand sire he is. Most impressive was a parade of forthcoming Karaka Sales as yearlings. Two of our group were particularly keen on three of these youngsters. To have a private tour of New Zealand bloodstock facilities at Karaka Sales complex was the encore to this beautiful symphony we had experienced over five days. James Jennings, auctioneer and manager walked us through this state of the art complex where we experienced the very best New Zealand can offer and what an experience! Everywhere we looked we sighed at the first class facilities from the corporate areas to the all-wood, no nails stables and the breezeways, gardens and the finale, the sales complex itself. We stood in amazement as James told of the many champions who had passed through this ring; far too many to mention. If you ever are able to attend these sales, especially the national sales held in late January you will surely agree that this complex must have been made in heaven. Victorian Wine and Stud Tour, March 2007 Details later into the New Year regarding a Melbourne tour to the Australia Cup in March, as well as incorporating a visit to selected studs and especially to the Retirement Stud just north of Tullamarine Airport, where the likes of Doriemus, Sky Heights and Fields Of Omagh now reside in their well-earned retirement. Hunter Valley Stud, Wine and Polo Tour, April 2007 A repeat of the successful tour will again take place next April, and it is again anticipated that it will be sold out quickly. Last year, the group visited Emirates Park where Al Maher and Secret Savings stand, Yarraman Park with Catbird the main star there, as well as John Johnstone’s Sadler’s Creek Boutique Winery at Pokolbin. Apart from the stud visits, the tour will once again attend the Cessnock Races and enjoy the Polo at Ellerston the property of the Packer families, for a memorable day at the field.

TRACK TOG

A PROFILE ON

J

une Bailey, wife and indefatigable partner of horse trainer Alan Bailey, is the epitome of the phrase: “behind every great man, there’s a great woman”. But in their case, characteristic modesty prevails and June and Alan Bailey – one of SouthEast Queensland’s most successful teams – would prefer to be recognised for their quiet dedication, commitment to their owners and riders and their lifelong passion for the sport of racing. Besides, it’s more a case of behind Alan is an entire family of hard workers. “It’s a family affair,” says June, describing how she has been at Alan’s side since she left school, “some 45 years ago”, and their children, Tracey and Trevor, have never known their parents to have another profession beyond training. “I don’t remember anything but horses,” says Tracey, who has taken over much of the bookwork and liaison with owners – some 130 of them – a particularly tricky and time-consuming task considering the popularity of syndication these days. “It’s not a case of one horse, one owner,” she explains. “Sometimes there are 10, which means 10 accounts, 10 reports, 10 phone calls on the day of a race. And dad rings all the owners personally and speaks with them, he doesn’t just fax them a report.” Alan rises at 3.30am, works at the track til 9am, returns to his home-office and is on the phones until midday or else at the races. It doesn’t stop. Three or four days out of seven, their commitment to training and racing never ceases. “Then it could be a final race at Ipswich at 6pm and we’re packing up and the owners are ringing to find out how their horses went,” says Tracey. 16

It’s a 20-hour a day, seven day a week job, which luckily, they all love, in spite of the costs and challenges. “It has certainly become the rich man’s sport, with the expense of feed in this drought and travel and other costs, but that’s why people are getting into syndicates and sharing the load – as well as enjoying the benefits together.” June says she couldn’t imagine another way of life. Despite the early mornings and arduous schedules, the travel, pressure to exact performances from the horses and exhausting routines, she is as enchanted today with the lifestyle of horse racing as she was when she was a teenager. Alan has honed his arsenal of skills since he was a youth, a parttime helper assisting a blind trainer in his home-town of Melbourne all those years ago. “I had ridden in shows and ring events, but until I met Alan, I’d never even been to the races,” June recalls. “He was a golf course greenskeeper and tried to manage both for a while, but then one day, we had a family conference and decided to give professional training a go.” The decision paid off and after six years in Melbourne, the Baileys eventually relocated to Queensland. Alan and Trevor worked in Singapore for an 18-month stint, before returning to the Gold Coast. “Alan and I don’t bet, but we place the horses and follow them around. I love the fashion, shopping for a race day, dressing up, the great people, the fantastic friends we’ve made in 30 years, the good fun and socialising. It’s really a wonderful world we work and play in.” The highs and lows of racing make an intoxicating work environment. “It doesn’t matter how hard you work, or how dedicated you are, if you don’t win, it doesn’t count,” explains June. “Winning is the name of the game.” Fortunately, it’s something Alan and his team do very well. At Magic Millions in 2006, Alan won the inaugural trainer’s bonus, as well as the Paspaley Handicap and a multitude of other races and accolades throughout the year. The qualities that make a trainer great, according to June, are the ability to juggle the needs of owners, the wellbeing of the horses and each of their idiosyncrasies, and genuine commitment to embracing change. “With the track work and the horses’ health, Alan is constantly looking for new ways, new feed, new vitamins,” June says. “It’s so competitive. You have to be adapting, changing and looking for an edge somewhere and that means keeping up with the new things. Or else you end up at the back.” Getting on with the range of industry stakeholders is also an advantage. But is a win at the finishing post a case of strong horse, talented trainer or skilful jockey? “It’s a combination of them all, and the trainer has to know the strengths, weaknesses and qualities of everybody involved,” says June. “The rider is absolutely essential. Imagine a Formula One driver’s role. Does he make a difference to Ferrari? Of course. The decisions the jockey makes out there, when to move, where to move, all in the heat of the moment when it’s life and death for the jockey, are crucial to the horse winning. “In Alan’s case, he has an excellent relationship with the jockeys he works with. He has worked with Chris Whiteley, lead jockey at the Gold Coast, for five years, and Glen Colless for 12 years. There’s such mutual respect there.” From her perspective of a world of experience, June believes Australian trainers can hold their own alongside their international counterparts. “Australian trainers are as good as any in the world,” she states. “They are used to training in hard conditions and their horses compete overseas and do very well. You have to have dedication, focus, communication skills – Alan’s a real people person – and getting a kick out of winning. It’s all about strategy”. Alan makes an art of choosing the best races for his horses, working in Ipswich, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. “He’s won the premiership a couple of times. Alan and Bryan Guy are neck and neck – I think there’s only one in it.” A particular favourite and focus is the Coast’s own Magic Millions. “Alan targets the Magic Millions each year because it’s a great carnival, the prize money is excellent and the whole atmosphere is fantastic,” June enthuses about this colourful 19-day festival that has achieved prestige status on the international calendar. “We absolutely love it. You can buy the horse, then race it at Magic Millions. You still have to get up at 3.30am, so we have to be selective about the social events we attend. But we’ve been every year. Last year we were beside ourselves, winning seven races over the three days. I spent the whole time in the enclosure with a glass of champagne toasting the winners!” The Baileys senior are content they’ve achieved everything they set out to in their careers, and June says with a chuckle that they imagine the coming decade to be a time of “sedately riding out the years in local racing”. Trevor, a successful trainer in his own right, and Tracey have been picking up the proverbial reins for many years, but there is no deadline on Alan and June handing over entirely. “I don’t think he’d ever retire,” says June of Alan. “We just came back from a trip to Hong Kong – the first holiday in many years and it was lovely to move at a different pace. Our whole lives revolve around the clock – getting to places on time, winning times. In Hong Kong we could stay out later at night and sleep in. We spent the days shopping and eating out at night.” But the call of the track is strong and June admits that after 12 days, they were both anxious to get back amongst it. “That was long enough. Even though he wasn’t working, we had to go to the races there to get a hit of horse poo and hay. And his mobile didn’t stop ringing with calls from home. A trainer’s hours are really extended by the mobile phone.” As June recounts, the long hours and interminable phone calls and drop-ins were the reason behind their move from Bundall to Main Beach. “We never seemed to have any peace,” she says. “People were always dropping in right through dinner time and into the night. Once we moved away from the track, we got a little more time to ourselves, but still, people call at all hours. It’s a seven day a week job. We eat, breathe and sleep racing.” The key to Alan’s success and stamina is June’s meticulous preparation, ability to grasp times, places and commitments, and AUSTRALASIAN WOMEN IN RACING

their almost subliminal rapport. Says Tracey: “Mum gets the colours out, organises the schedule, tells dad where he has to be, at what time and what he’s doing once he gets there. One wouldn’t function without the other. They are in synch.”

June’s Top Tips For Race Days: Get there early to secure the best parking and vantage point Book a marquee, restaurant or hopefully, score an invitation from a sponsor for the best position in airconditioned comfort Go all out with your dressing up and enjoying the occasion. “The Gold Coast is mostly casual, so make the races an event where you dress up to the nines,” says June Don’t wear a big hat, just a fascinator will do, or risk being bumped and buffeted among the crowds Choose fashionable shoes over comfortable. “You can take them off later, but this is one day when you have the chance to look great from top to toe.” The prizes for Fashions on the Field are worth the effort! Don’t forget to take your sunscreen and wear it if you are outdoors. 17

Making Magic A PROFILE ON ANNIE McDONALD By Jeni Bone

W

hen it comes to pedigree, or more appropriately, bloodlines, Annie McDonald, marketing manager at the Magic Millions, has the lineage, the hands-on experience and the occupation that stack up against all-comers. She’s not just a marketing appendage to the industry, she has been working in racing and sales for 16 years, has the formal qualifications, the lifestyle, the love of its every facet and most importantly, her finger on the very pulse of the country’s finest carnival, Magic Millions. “I was riding from when I can first remember,” she says, painting a vivid picture of growing up in Central Queensland at Raglan Station, just west of Rockhampton. “When I was three months old, dad put me up front and rode me around the property.” Her family had been on the same land for close to 100 years and were pioneers of the region, as were her grandfather’s brothers. Annie tells how her relative opened the first winery in the Hunter Valley 150 years ago, a little enterprise known as Ben Ean, now swallowed up by Fosters under the Lindeman brand. “We are all enterprising I suppose. Horses and wine are in our blood.” As Annie recounts, she was always riding, always interested in and always keen to work with horses. “When I went away to boarding school at Armadale, the horses came with me. Then when I studied in Melbourne, I continued to compete in dressage and eventing, which I did for more than 15 years.” Her studies at Marcus Oldham Agricultural College qualified her in Business Management with a major in Racing & Breeding. Interspersed with all this was work as a writer and consultant with Dalgety Bloodstock International, at that time the largest auction house in the country. “It was great being immersed in the theoretical side, but then still in my 20s, I enrolled as a mature age student and set about doing my BA in Marketing and Journalism, with a double major in PR/Journalism and Sociology.” After a brief stint applying her marketing techniques to the family business, Annie took off for Europe, where she landed a plumb job with the great race stable of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid 18

Al Maktoum in Ireland. The racing industries of Norway and Sweden followed, but after three winters in such climes, Annie decided to return to Australia – more precisely, the Gold Coast on the brink of summer. “It was a shock after sub-zero temperatures, but I got reacclimatized quickly and straight back into work, starting with Magic Millions.” Six years on, she is as much a fixture of the carnival as its founders, Gerry Harvey, John Singleton and Rob Ferguson, and has only become more inspired by the event and its 19-day calendar of activities as it grows and develops. “The industry is so full of characters and it changes every day – that’s what keeps it fresh. There’s always something new to learn, whether that be in breeding, racing, the auctions, even betting. When it comes to ‘black-type’ racing – the mixing and breeding which adds value to relations and pedigree, there are so many different theories. Some people take a scientific approach, others work on gut instinct, but they all impact on the commercial market and the auction ring.” The main challenge has been to accommodate the changes and the ever-increasing demands as the Magic Millions has grown from a $78m turnover to its most recent success of a massive $213m. “That rapid growth, along with a lot more expectations and the time we need to put in to ensure the programs’ success, mean we’re busy all year round.” It’s not just January on the Gold Coast. “Magic Millions in January is a major event for the company, but there are also 30 sales per year around Australia: the Magic Millions winter sales in June, which are the biggest bloodstock sales in the southern hemisphere, and then John Singleton has put a lot of effort into the Adelaide carnival where the race series prize pool is up to $15m. We also do all the regional events – Rockhampton, Toowoomba and Wyong and approach them all with the same enthusiasm.” For her part, Annie is charged with managing the domestic and international branding and marketing for the Magic Millions events and sales. “My job is to generate exposure for the brand through targeted campaigns, media, promotional opportunities, sponsorship, advertising, partnership with the Fashion Awards. There are the tried and true formulae you stick to each year and then additional, fresh aspects that have to be considered to help the Magic Millions evolve and progress.” Fortunately, Annie has an avid host of event partners in the industry who assist with organising many of the ancillary events and keep her informed of their requirements and objectives. “Groups like Women in Racing, who handle their own activities and just keep me in the loop. They bring a lot to the industry and make my job a lot easier.” Among the notable achievements this year is the estimated $30m worth of media exposure Annie has gained for the company, along with the resigning of R.M.Williams who have taken up another three-year sponsorship, as has BMW Australia and Conrad Jupiters/TABCorp. AUSTRALASIAN WOMEN IN RACING

“We’re very pleased that Qantas has joined us for the 2007 Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions as well, along with InStyle magazine as national media partner and Paspaley Pearls who have been with us for five years.” Perhaps more difficult to quantify, but crucial to the momentum of the event, is the esteem with which Magic Millions is held in overseas markets. “It has become a Queensland icon,” states Annie with wellearned pride. “Peter Beattie tells us that when he has visited Dubai and Malaysia the Magic Millions is held in such high regard, he was really impressed.” Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, South Africa, Europe are all burgeoning markets for Magic Millions. “Our managing director, David Chester, and general manager, Paul Weekes spend a lot of time visiting these markets and cultivating interest there. It’s certainly important for marketing to have international interest and more and more buyers from these markets each year.” While never tiring of the rigours of job, and snatching the briefest of vacations each year in the quietest time – “10 days in July” – Annie admits she would love to be retired in five years time, free to enjoy her horses, riding them, breeding them and putting to practical use those qualifications and the expertise built up from the past decade and a half as an integral part of the industry. “It’s my lifelong dream to breed horses. Of course, I still have a lot to learn – the thoroughbred industry is a highly regulated industry. But it’s one great ambition of mine.” As is returning to riding, which is a more immediate pastime. “I gave up riding for five years and missed it, so I bought a retired polo mare, Pruey, and I’ve started learning to play. I would love to have the time to dedicate to learning all the aspects you need to play competitively, but there are still many exciting things ahead of Magic Millions and I’m looking forward to being a part of them.” Among such bright prospects for the company, as Annie foresees, could be taking the Magic Millions brand global. Annie is adamant that Magic Millions has the cache and clout to rival Keeneland and Tattersalls in terms of sales. “It would entirely depend on the owners and what their vision for the company is, but I would love to take on the big players in the US and Europe.” AUSTRALASIAN WOMEN IN RACING

Owning A T

he thunder of hooves heading for the finish line gives a thrill that cannot be matched. How much greater the excitement when your own horse is one of the front runners. Thousands of Queenslanders who are owners or part-owners of racehorses have felt their hearts race as a jockey riding hands and heels brings their horse down the home straight. There are many ways for people to become involved in racing as horse owners. These range from being a hobby owner to a professional, from being a sole owner to a part owner through a partnership or a syndicate, through to having your own stable of champions.

Financial Commitment Apart from the cost of buying a thoroughbred or a share in a joint partnership or syndicate, potential owners must consider the ongoing costs of feeding, grooming and training their racehorse. The minimum cost of keeping and racing a thoroughbred racehorse in Australia has been estimated at around $15,000 a year, with the average prizemoney won by each horse more than $5000. Therefore, a full owner of an average racehorse could expect to pay about $10,000 a year out of her or his own pocket. However, a horse would only have to win two mid-ranking city races a year to break even.

Partnerships And Syndicates Horse owning through partnerships of up to 10 people and syndicates of up to 20 allows the costs to be shared, making getting into the industry affordable for more people and allowing friends, work colleagues or other groups to share in the excitement. This means you could become an owner for less than $20 a week. Before entering a partnership or syndicate, prospective owners should ensure there is a clear agreement about the terms of the partnership, especially regarding decision-making and the sharing of prize money and costs. The joint owner whose name is listed first on the ownership or lease documents will be the official manager for the joint owners or partners under the Rules of Racing. Each joint-owner or partner’s name appears in the racebook as a registered owner, and each is entitled to full race day ownership privileges, giving access to the members’ enclosure and mounting yard. Only the syndicate manager’s name appears in the racebook along with the syndicate name.

20

Sales Many people become owners by buying horses privately or at yearling sales, where horses are sold at auction. Before buying, it is strongly recommended that you seek advice from a bloodstock agent, veterinarian or your horse trainer.

QTIS The Queensland Thoroughbred Investment Scheme aims to increase investment in the Queensland thoroughbred industry. Approximately $5.3m is distributed to industry participants annually. The range of QTIS incentives encourages participants to register their horses for the scheme. These include QTIS Added Stakes, QTIS Breeder Bonuses and QTIS Super Stakes. Queensland-bred and Breedback eligibility are both available as part of QTIS. For further information go to www.queenslandracing.com.au and click on the QTIS icon on the left hand side.

Privileges For Owners Privileges for owners include free admission and entry to the members’ enclosure on the day their horse is racing. Owners can also enter the mounting yard to discuss tactics with their trainer and jockey. However, due to limited space and safety considerations, entry to the mounting yard is subject to the discretion of stewards and the race club secretary. A race club official will invite winning owners into the committee room to enjoy a celebratory drink and watch a replay of the race. To ensure memories of the win, owners can obtain a photo of their horse as it flashed past the finishing post. Often races carry trophies as well as prizemoney. Many clubs have special parking areas and other facilities for owners.

CUPS DID NOT ALWAYS RUNNETH OVER By David Ellis

W

hen Toryboy won the 1865 Melbourne Cup, his owner was so horrified with the trophy presented to him that he sold it. Others in the early 1890s also let it be known they too were less than impressed with their ‘cups’ – because rather than grand gold or silver ornaments to show-off over their fire-place, they got the bone-china types for taking tea and coffee. And in 1908 when Lord Nolan won the big race, owner John Mayo didn’t even get a cup at all. Instead he got an assortment of cash and prizes worth over $10,000 – including a near-metre long wooden plaque on which was mounted a silver silhouette of a horse in full gallop atop a garish red base. While somewhat bemused, Mr Mayo accepted his winnings in good spirit from the Governor-General – to whom he’d earlier given a tip that Lord Nolan would win the Cup – and took his horse and plaque home to Newcastle. But one of the most interesting Melbourne Cup trophies was that won by Mentor in the Centennial Year 1888. It comprised three silver horses on a silver-plated base and weighed 280 ounces (nearly 8kg;) while originally costing about $5000, when sold at auction a hundred years later it fetched $177,000 – a then-world record for a sporting trophy. In some years there were no trophies at all, just cash, and from 1942 to 1944 Cup winners were awarded War Bonds. The first and second Melbourne Cups, run in 1861 and 1862, were won by the great Archer, but he missed running in 1863 when connections were late entering him in the field. Early prizes were almost always controversial and it was in 1865 when Toryboy won the Cup that his owner, a Mr B.C. Marshall was the first to go public with criticism of his trophy. A somewhat outspoken draper from Melbourne’s Prahran, 26

Mr Marshall told Victoria Racing Club officials he considered his $200 trophy “a monstrosity,” and promptly sold it to the Flemington Hunt Club. The Club used it as an annual Hunt Trophy until Melbourne presumably ran out of foxes. Melbourne stockbroker W.T. Jones was the first ‘tea- and coffee-cup’ recipient when his horse Bravo won the Cup by a length from the formidable Carbine in 1889. As well as a purse of cash, his prize contained a set each of cups, saucers, tea and coffee pots so he presumably could have folk around to discuss Bravo’s success. Similar packages continued to be awarded over the next few years, prompting one outraged gentleman of the track to tell the Melbourne Press that such trophies were “to the proper glory of the Melbourne Cup as flat soda water is to live Champagne.” The controversial prizes were replaced by more conservative trophies after continuing criticism from Mr Mayo who, incidentally, never doubted he horse would win the 1908 Cup, and on a tram from his Melbourne hotel to the race track proferred such advice to anyone within ear-shot – and at the track, to Governor-General, Lord Dudley himself. After the race, the G-G confided to a colleague: “A strange, grey-headed old man told me before the race that Lord Nelson would win; I took little notice – until to my astonishment he came up to collect his prize.” By the 1920s a ‘loving cup’ design had been permanently adopted; today’s gold plated Melbourne Cups are valued at around $80,000 each – and come with a handy $3m cash component. HOOFNOTE: The legendary Phar Lap that was bought for $330 and earned over $100,000 in prize money, started in three Melbourne Cups but won only one – in 1930, just four days after race-fixing criminals tried to shoot him.
