From the Editor
Welcome to our second issue of Australasian Women In Racing, which is published quarterly As well as seeking to inform women of the attractions and machinations of a fascinating industry, we will try to capture the characters and spirit of the people who make the horse racing world a colourful, dynamic landscape. The social realm is equally important. We will present the pick of the parties, carnivals and fashion on the field.
In this issue, we have a great story on Maryann Thexton one of Australia’s most successful and respected trainers in recent history. Her love of horses goes back as far as Maryann can remember. Originally from Adelaide and spending nearly 20 years in New Zealand, Maryann has been living on the Gold Coast since 2003. Maryann is totally dedicated and passionate about horse racing. We have a run down on the Magic Millions, renowned for quality, value and success sale graduates on the race track, this year continued to set records and produce champions, as well as command the attention of the International Racing world with their yearling sales. The QLD Turf Club, Ipswich Turf Club and Toowoomba Racing Club all have a myriad of racing happening over the Winter Racing Carnival. See the latest in fashion, shoes, hats and beautiful outfits. For a limited time only, you can subscribe to Women in RACING for the special price of $10.00 for 4 issues. See page 33 for details. If you have a story or anecdote or even a photograph of yourself or friends at the races, please send them in and we will publish them for you. So enjoy the Winter Racing Carnival and happy punting.

Think Like A Woman

A woman was walking down the street when she was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless woman who asked her for a couple of dollars for dinner. The woman took out her bill fold, extracted ten dollars and asked, “If I give you this money, will you buy some wine with it instead of dinner?” “No,” I had to stop drinking years ago, the homeless woman replied. “Will you use it to go shopping instead of buying food?” the woman asked. “No,” I don’t waste time shopping, the homeless woman said. “I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive.” “Will you spend this on a beauty salon instead of food?” the woman asked. “Are you NUTS!” replied the homeless woman. “I haven’t had my hair done in 20 years!” “Well,” said the woman, “I’m not going to give you the money. Instead, I’m going to take you out for dinner with my hubby and myself tonight. The homeless Woman was astounded. “Won’t your husband be furious with you for doing that? I know I’m dirty, and I probably smell pretty disgusting.” The woman replied, “That’s okay. It’s important for him to see what a woman looks like after she has given up shopping, hair appointments and wine.” Women In Racing Inc. (a separate identity to Australasian Women In Racing) is a unique organisation formed by Jennie Campbell-Bartels and Baslyn Beel in 2005. It’s aim is to generate women’s interest in all facets of the horse racing industry, including breeding, syndication, ownership, stud tours, fashion, understanding “how to bet” and social events. As well, they have established Racing Welfare as the vehicle through which support is provided for those in the racing industry whose lives have unfortunately been touched by injury or death.

A Magical Morning
THE MAGIC MILLIONS WOMEN IN RACING BREAKFAST A mild summer’s morning greeted the guests at the Sofitel, Broadbeach for the Champagne Breakfast hosted by Women In Racing Inc. Under their prestigious banner, and with the endorsement of the Magic Millions, this function was a winner before the day began. Guests were keen to secure their tables and the room was packed with the most beautifully clad ladies I think I have seen assembled apart from the Melbourne Oaks luncheon that is certainly a showcase of fashion. For a rather early start, 8am, I was thrilled to observe how much care and attention to detail our ladies had made. As Ken Lord, senior social journalist with the Sunday Mail stated, “there’s no doubt about this club, you can put anything together and it doesn’t get any better than this! A credit to all.” Earlier through the year I had asked my dear friend, Katie Davenport if she would be available through the Magic Millions and perhaps become involved in the breakfast. As only Katie would, she was very enthusiastic and, as a result provided a beautiful fashion segment, coupled with exquisite millinery from Tracey Mac, who has her signature shop based on the Gold Coast at Marina Mirage. A great surprise and something that is not seen often, involved our entertainment, Bzazz, an all lady Jazz, Swing and Blues band who looked splendid in the racing colours of our member, successful Gold Coast lady trainer, Maryanne Thexton. Vince Pennisi and Associates, leading Brisbane solicitors, donated the funds that allowed Bzazz to entertain our fillies and the club appreciate their support greatly.
Our star attractions continued with the appearance of the Face of the Magic Millions, Suzanne Messara, daughter of leading Arrowfield Stud owners, Kris and John Messara.
Her elegance, poise, and
gorgeous features epitomised her impeccable approach to not only the racing industry, but the fashionable side to racing. Our honorary MC, the well-known sporting and television personality Ken Hose, placed Suzanne at ease and
it was a relaxed and informative
interview. Adding further to the morning was the attendance of both her mother, and sister who provided that extra touch to such a successful morning. One of the most enthusiastic personalities ever to grace the racecourses of Australia was our guest speaker Denise Martin . At the invitation of David Chester, Managing Director of the Magic Millions Sales, Ms Martin kept our guests spell-bound when relating her life story that eventually led to her position with Star Thoroughbreds, the syndicate company controlled by our favorite leading lady trainer, Ms Gai Waterhouse. The breakfast over, it was time for our stayers to rush home, change the silks and head to the barrier! A Magical Meeting was ahead of them again. - See photos on page 4 • Jennifer Campbell Bartels, Director, Women In Racing Inc

Racing
TO SUCCESS “Maryann Thexton is renowned in the Australian racing industry as being one of the most successful and respected trainers in recent history. Not only does she train many a winning horse, but she juggles this profession with the ever demanding roles of mother, wife and business-woman. She proudly states that she has made it all by herself, with no support from benefactors, having found each winning horse on her own, taking them through every stage of development and promotion, all the way to the finish line.” Sarah Blinco HER love of horses goes back as far as Maryann can remember, and despite a few changes in vocation through her life, she has always maintained some kind of active role working with horses. She initially attended Roseworthy Agricultural College in Adelaide where she completely encompassed her passion for the racing industry. “It was there that I developed a true love of racing. My family were not ‘horsey’ at all - completely academic - so were in shock horror at my choice of career,” Maryann says. Originally from Adelaide, Maryann spent nearly 20 years in New Zealand before a brief and successful stint in New South Wales followed by a move with her partner, David Weigold, to the Gold Coast in 2003. “It’s a vibrant place to train and racing is ever present in all arenas,” she says. “It’s virtually impossible to go anywhere without meeting someone who has an interest in a race horse. Queensland Racing is undergoing a metamorphosis for the better in that there have been significant increases in prize money in the last few years and there are even more exciting times ahead I’m sure.”
6
Maryann also enthuses about the Magic Millions Carnival, which she says is her favourite event on the annual racing calendar. “I love it and you can feel the hype and buzz around the track as it builds up. I have several Magic Millions horses and have had runners each year since I have been here. I have run places every year but this year Warrior Trader won the Cup and that was a wonderful day! There are people who don’t even recognise me on race day after having seen me at 3:30am at the track. The stewards are always on about my footwear not being appropriate!” Most of us forget that the glamour and fun of race days is a well deserved reward for trainers and others central to the development of successful race horses. Maryann recounts a typical day as the alarm sounding at 3:10am, changing into ‘track clothes’ and then heading to the stables to liaise with staff and horses. They then work until around 6:30am where the horses are timed, notes and photos are taken and the schedule for the day ahead is arranged. Then the mum of three heads back home to prepare her children for school.
AUSTRALASIAN WOMEN IN RACING
“Some days I go home for a rest, others there are trials, races or meetings. At least twice a week I go out to our spelling farm in Guanaba Valley to check the horses in the paddock. I also have a significant amount of book work and client communication to take care of,” she recalls. As mid-afternoon rolls around, Maryann usually finishes off some odd jobs before checking on the horses again, then picking up the children from school, cooking dinner and finally going to bed! Enthusiasm is what keeps Maryann interested and excited after all this time. “It is a highly passionate industry with massive highs and equally as big disappointments along the way. I absolutely love my horses and they are the foundation of racing. Sometimes I think punters forget that they are not machines. I try very hard to make their lives happy and comfortable. A happy horse will always perform to its best ability. The horse always comes first in my book and I am passionate about that”. While many aspiring trainers would no doubt look up to Maryann, she herself has mentors in the industry: “Gai Waterhouse has fought for her right to be one of the leading trainers in Australia. Her strike rate is enormous for a big stable and she is an excellent role model for any aspiring lady trainer,” says Maryann.
occur they will perform better on race day. I do not subscribe to the ‘ambulance at the bottom of the cliff’ theory. Sometimes prevention can be more costly on the face of it, but I do not believe in short cuts. They’re false economy”. Off track Maryann enjoys life on the Gold Coast by dining with friends, spending some time on the Broadwater and downtime at home with her children. She is excited about the future and says her goal is to continue to improve the quality of horses in the stable to allow further big race day wins. “I am looking forward to more big wins, and I am looking forward to my next win. I have had many proud moments - rehabilitating horses to win big races, winning several races in a row with horses, winning black type races, and winning the Magic Millions Cup. Every win is special and I still jump up and down every time. I just love it!” • Contact Thexton Racing Stables on (07) 5592 6927 or email thextonracingstables@bigpond.com.au
She adds, “In the breeding ranks, John Messara has created a forbidding dynasty from an Australian foundation. Arrowfield is the most beautiful property and the hospitality is renowned. I think the foresight shown by Arrowfield in its breeding programs is benefiting Australian breeding as a whole”. Over the past few years Maryann’s on-track success has astounded she and her team, as well as supporters world-wide. Evidently her hard work is paying dividends and she says she is very proud of her statistics: “I have a small team of no more than 20 horses but usually about 17 in work. I have featured in the trainers premierships, had horses in the running for the Gold Coast Horse of the Year and have always been in the top handful of Queensland trainers on strike rate and feature races won. You have to keep producing winners for the benefit of the owners and the stable as a whole,” she says. Additionally, Maryann is proud of her yearling selection – “I have personally selected Warrior Trader, Omnitrader, Tornado Alley, Algorithm, Aladins Lion, Grand Corso and Parameter. Between these seven horses they have won 65 races and $1,730,000.” Maryann believes that to be a good trainer you need to truly care about the horses in your charge. “I think a lot about them and I believe I have a natural ability. I learned the basics of true horsemanship at Roseworthy from a very very good horseman in Peter Jones ex Lindsay Park. I still use the skills Peter taught me every day. I get gut feelings about horses, and usually when you are worrying or thinking about the next move with a horse, your gut instinct is the right one. I have learned to trust myself this way. I have an avid interest in the veterinary side of the horse. I love asking questions and working with the people around me. You never stop learning and I am always looking for ways to improve the condition of the horses on race day,” she says. Maryann also advocates that recovery is crucial to a horse’s (and consequently trainer’s) success. “I feel that if you can help the horses to recover from their track work and racing before problems

TURF CLUB
RACING has been long enjoyed by ladies of Ipswich with the first race being in 1861 followed closely by the first Ipswich Cup in 1866. Since then, ladies have supported racing in Ipswich, particularly at the Ipswich Cup and more recently the inaugural Recruitment Queensland Ladies Day. The Ladies Day was held this year on Friday March 9th with funds raised for two local charities – Ipswich Hospice and the Kim Walters Choices Program. This year a total of $6000 was raised by these ladies from Ipswich who had a memorable afternoon out as well. The ladies enjoyed a champagne luncheon in the Jibboom Lounge followed by a day of racing in the Trackside Enclosure along with a pamper tent and Angel Card reading. Guest speakers Annmarie White and Gillian Heinrich spoke about racing and training from a ladies perspective at the function. An enjoyable day was had by all

with $3000 being raised for each of the two charities. Recruitment Queensland and Ipswich Turf Club are confident of further boosted numbers at next year’s Ladies Day. The big event that Ladies support and enjoy at the Ipswich Turf Club is the annual Ipswich Cup. Ladies flock from all over South East Queensland and even Northern New South Wales. The Ipswich Cup is the biggest event on the Ipswich Social Calendar and was reported in the Queensland Racing Annual Report as having the highest attendance of any Winter Racing Carnival event over the past few years. This year we are anticipating more attendees than ever before with the opening of an Ipswich Turf Club marquee in the infield for the first time. Fashions on the Field will be another feature again at this year’s Ipswich Cup and this is always a favourite with the ladies. There are

two options for marquees at Ipswich Cup. The first is a Grandstand Marquee which includes entry to the Cup and a 6 hour standard beverages package. The other option is an Infield Marquee, located inside the track. This package includes a 6 hour premium beverages package as well as a quality luncheon. This package is $99 per person. We’ve established ourselves as one of the cornerstone events on the bloodstock sale calendar, and this year was also one of the top international glamour racing events.” The first of the Carnival’s international celebrity guests ensured the world’s media spotlight illuminated the 2007 proceedings, as the high profile actress, Tara Reid visited the Gold Coast to attend a selection of events and take in the sights of the region. Tara attended events including the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Official Opening Night Cocktail Party (escorted by some of the Gold Coasts hottest sporting stars, Josh Graham and Daniel Conn from the Gold Coast Titans), the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Raceday and assisting the auctioneering staff by bid spotting during the sales. Arriving at the Gold Coast Turf Club by helicopter, she was escorted for the day at the races by rugby stars Karmichael Hunt and Justin Hodges. The Broncos players accompanied Tara to a VIP luncheon in the Paspaley Room, overlooking the track, where they mixed with other notable guests, including John Singleton, his daughter Jess and son Jack, Gerry Harvey, swimming star Grant Hackett and singer

From the international tennis circuit, Martina Hingis took time out from the Mondial Australian Women’s Hardcourt held at Royal Pines resort to visit the Carlton Draught Goldmarket Raceday (the first event on the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Carnival calendar) held on 1 January and also the Magic Millions complex. While she is no stranger to horses, owning five showjumping horses and experienced in riding showjumpers from the age of 11, her day at the CJMM races was her first punt and as luck would have it, she backed a winner, much to the delight of the media that flocked around her during her stay. A firm fixture on the local events calendar, and with $3.5 Million up for grabs on the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Raceday, the Gold Coast Turf Club drew an attendance of nearly 20,000. There are many ways for people to become involved in racing as horse owners. These range from being a hobby owner to a professional, from being a sole owner to a part-owner through a partnership or a syndicate, through to having your own stable of champions.

The minimum cost of keeping and racing a thoroughbred racehorse in Australia has been estimated at around $15,000 a year, with the a full owner of an average racehorse could expect to pay about $10,000 a year out of her or his own pocket. However, a horse would only have to win two mid-ranking city races a year to break even.

PARTNERSHIPS AND SYNDICATES Horse owning through partnerships of up to 10 people and syndicates of up to 20 allows the costs to be shared, making getting into the industry affordable for more people and allowing friends, work colleagues or other groups to share in the excitement. This means you could become an owner for less than $20 a week. Before entering a partnership or syndicate, prospective owners should ensure there is a clear agreement about the terms of the partnership, especially regarding decision-making and the sharing of prize money and costs. The joint owner whose name is listed first on the ownership or lease documents will be the official manager for the joint owners or partners under the Rules of Racing. Each joint-owner or partner’s name appears in the racebook as a registered owner, and each is entitled to full race-day ownership privileges, giving access to the members’ enclosure and mounting yard. Only the syndicate manager’s name appears in the racebook along with the syndicate name.
SALES Many people become owners by buying horses privately or at yearling sales, where horses are sold at auction. Before buying, it is strongly recommended that you seek advice from a bloodstock agent, veterinarian or your horse trainer.
QTIS The Queensland Thoroughbred Investment Scheme aims to increase investment in the Queensland thoroughbred industry. Approximately $5.3m is distributed to industry participants annually. The range of QTIS incentives encourages participants to register their horses for the scheme. These include QTIS Added Stakes, QTIS Breeder Bonuses and QTIS Super Stakes. Queensland-bred and Breedback eligibility are both available as part of QTIS.

For further information go to www.queenslandracing.com.au and click on the QTIS icon on the left-hand side.
PRIVILEGES FOR OWNERS Privileges for owners include free admission and entry to the members’ enclosure on the day their horse is racing. Owners can also enter the mounting yard to discuss tactics with their trainer and jockey. However, due to limited space and safety considerations, entry to the mounting yard is subject to the discretion of stewards and the race club secretary. A race club official will invite winning owners into the committee room to enjoy a celebratory drink and watch a replay of the race. To ensure memories of the win, owners can obtain a photo of their horse as it flashed past the finishing post. Often races carry trophies as well as prizemoney. Many clubs have special parking areas and other facilities for owners.
ASSISTANCE FOR FIRST-TIME OWNERS Queensland Racing can help first-time owners with information on all aspects of ownership. Contact Queensland Racing for more information.
QUEENSLAND RACEHORSE OWNERS’ ASSOCIATION The Queensland Racehorse Owners’ Association (QROA) is proud to represent owners. The association continually seeks better outcomes for its members through reduced costs, increased prizemoney and the maintenance of a strong relationship with Queensland Racing. In addition, the Association values its members and encourages friendship and social interaction. Members of QROA also receive other benefits, including free entry to selected racecourses and trade discounts. • For further information, please visit their website www.qob.com.au or ring their office on (07) 3869 9739.

IS MY PASSION “FASHION is my passion and hats are my particular weakness,” says Dale Olsson, owner of The Hat Box, which represents Australia’s best milliners. “Every hat here is a one-off original and my stable of 20 milliners are first past the post every time,” claims Dale. “Elizabeth R took top honours at the Melbourne Cup a couple of years ago and, this year, Sandra Robson swept the field at the Gold Coast’s Magic Millions. Tracey Andrews made the fascinator worn by Hollywood starlet Tara Reid and Karen Valentine made the ‘tin man’ hat worn by Miranda Otto in the film Starter Wife and, for a beach scene in the same film, Judy Davis wore one of our fabulous Panamas. The Hat Box is centrally located on the upper level of the Brisbane Arcade and carries a wide range of constantly changing hats and fascinators. Dale also stocks men’s dress hats. “Top hats, bowlers, fedoras – you name it, we have it and, last year, we added a range of genuine Panama hats from Ecuador to both the men’s and women’s collections. The Panama is ideally suited to our climate and once you’ve worn the real thing there’s really no going back.” A frequent Fashions on the Field winner, Dale always had trouble finding good-quality coloured leather gloves, so she now imports her gloves direct from Italy. For clients wanting their hat made to order, Dale will discuss shapes and colours with them and liaise with the best milliner to ensure the clients’ wishes are met. “A lot of my clients live on remote properties so mail order is no problem, but it’s important to understand each milliner has his, or her, own distinctive style, and some may be happier and better working with felt or ribbons, while some may be more at home working with straw or feathers. I’m simply the one who joins all the dots and I love it!” says Dale. Check her out at www.thehatbox.com.au or by phone at (07) 3210 2455.

THE BASICS
Horsetalk
HANDICAP – The Melbourne Cup is a “handicap” event, meaning horses are penalised by weight to try to even their chances. Penalties are given by official handicappers based on a horse’s previous results. For example, top chance Tawqeet was forced to carry an extra 2 kg because he won the Caulfield Cup, a major lead-in race. HOOP – Another name for a jockey. STRAPPER – The person who leads the horse out into the yard to parade before the race, who traditionally straps the horses’ legs before a race. TOPWEIGHT – The horse that runs in No.1, with the most weight on its back. Horses are given their starting number according to weight. BOTTOMWEIGHT – Similarly, number 24 will carry the minimum weight in the race. TRACKWORK – The training a horse does at a track to lead into the race. BLINKERS – A head fitting for the horse that blocks out side views and forces jittery horses to focus forward. STABLEMATES – Horses prepared by the same trainer.
THE HORSES
LOCALS – The Australian horses. INTERNATIONALS – The horses from overseas. MORE TOE THAN A THONG – A horse that has great speed. MUDLARK – A horse that likes the track wet, or with some ‘give’. SPEED HORSE – A horse that will go to the lead early to speed up the race, but unlikely to have a great finish. CAMEL – Derogatory name for a horse you think cannot win.
BETTING
FORM – What the horse has done in the past. ODDS – The quote on the horses’ chances from the bookie, telling you how much you get back for each dollar invested. FAVOURITE – The lowest-priced horse, the one the bookies think is the most likely to win. OUTSIDER – A horse not expected to feature, at a big price. TRIFECTA – Picking the first three horses in any order. BOXED TRIFECTA – Choosing the first three horses in order. QUINELLA – Picking first and second in any order. EXACTA – Choosing first and second in correct order. A PLUNGE – A lot of money placed on a certain horse that brings its odds down.
HERE IS A GUIDE TO HORSE TALK THAT WILL GET YOU THROUGH ANY RACE DAY, OR AT LEAST IMPRESS YOUR NON-BETTING FRIENDS. 24
BLOWING OUT – When a horse’s price increases because punters are not backing it.
THE AFTERMATH PROTEST – When a jockey or trainer makes a submission after the race claiming they were cheated out of a fair run. CORRECT WEIGHT – The signal all jockeys were correctly weighted, there were no protests, and bets can be paid out. SLAUGHTERED/BUTCHERED – When a jockey rides badly, giving the horse no chance of winning.
AUSTRALASIAN WOMEN IN RACING
THE RACE THE BARRIER – The stalls the horses jump from at the start.
WINE REVIEW
DRAWN OUT IN THE CAR PARK – The horse is starting from a wide barrier.
Yellowglen Jewel Yellow and Pink - Light on calories
MISSED THE KICK/JUMP – When a horse is slow out of the barriers. ON SETTLING – The part of the race where horses settle into a steady pace after the chaos of the start.
Yellowglen is Australia’s leading sparkling wine that delivers consumers all the fun, and glamour of sparkling wine for the seriously bubbly moments.
THE BOX SEAT – A handy place to sit upon settling, one back from the front and on the fence.
New Yellowglen Jewel Pink and Jewel Yellow are light, playful and fabulously fresh tasting sparkling wines that offer a bubbly, light alternative.
LOOKS RELAXED – The horse has settled into the race and is running freely. GETTING SOME COVER – Where horses get a slipstream effect from being behind another horse, especially when facing the wind.
Yellowglen Jewel is the new, fresh sparkling wine from Yellowglen. With 30% fewer calories and 40% less alcohol than Yellowglen Yellow.
TAILED OFF – When a horse is right at the back of the field. THREE WIDE/GOING VIA THE CAPE – When a jockey rides a horse wide of the fence.
Jewel Yellow is lighter on the palate and perfect for new bubbly light occasions as part of the balanced lifestyle. Bright and effervescent in the glass, soft tropical fruit flavours of pineapple and citrus wrapped up in tiny bubbles lead to a stylish, crisp finish. Delicious when served chilled!
PUTTING THE HORSE TO SLEEP – The Jockey Is Smoking A Pipe – The horse is well placed and the jockey can sit and wait to stoke up for the finish. THE TURN – Where the horses round the final bend, a long 550m from the finish.
Jewel Pink is lighter on the palate and the perfect accessory for a seriously bubbly but balanced lifestyle. A soft petal pink in the glass, strawberry and citrus aromas flood across the sparkling palate, balanced by refreshing natural acidity. Delicious when served chilled!
BE THERE AT THE CLOCK TOWER – A special Flemington saying. An ancient clock tower sits 200m from the finish and if you are a chance to win, the horse must be near the leaders as they go past the tower.
HERE IS AN OUTLINE OF THE MOST POPULAR TYPES OF BETS:

Kaz’s Katastrophes by Karen Phillips
SOMEONE once told me that a dog was the best way to meet a man. When I actually think back on it, they were probably the same person who said the best meeting place for ‘prospects’ was a gym. Which when you consider it is the most ridiculous place in the world because there is always someone better looking and three times smaller than you, who’s not sweating and huffing and puffing and that’s only as you are walking up the stairs to actually just get to the weights room. One of my worst experiences with a date was when I asked him to accompany me to a Yoga class which at the time I thought sounded like a quite new age and trendy way of getting to know someone. Of course the room was full when we got there and he ended up having to sit directly behind me. I actually thought this could prove quite a bonus as he watched my lithe-like thighs point towards the ceiling. However between the muscle cramps and unexpected decrease of flexibility since I had last done the splits at the age of 12, it was mildly embarrassing to say the least. As we left and I tried to make light conversation about the giggles coming from the back of the room during the class, he felt it appropriate and only fair to inform me that the sniggers were actually directed at me. He then proceeded to explain that my navy cotton bike shorts had become see through when I stretched and everyone could see the g-string underneath not to mention my lily white bottom! Oh my God.
ABOUT THE COLUMNIST ... Kaz was born under a palm tree in the sunny state of Queensland. During her whirlwind career, she has been runner up in the Miss Banana Queen Contest, crowned Tweed Valley Showgirl, bikini modelled once ... OK twice, been a newspaper journalist, publicist, stage performer and hosts Australia’s largest businesswomen’s event – Early Risers. She’s lived in Canada, London and Asia and now resides on Queensland’s Gold Coast with her dog – Jack in a three-bedroom villa. One bedroom for Jack and herself, the other two for her designer outfits! She’s a blonde (yes, even the roots) dynamo perched precariously on two long- lily-white legs and although she’s had a trillion lessons, is still not very good at golf. Between running her own PR Agency and her media and professional speaking commitments, she spends much of her time ploughing through girly magazines in search of the ultimate LBD (Little Black Dress) and spouting her philosophy on Secret Women’s Business to women everywhere from Tupperware parties to Girl Guide groups!

Fortunately by this time we were in the dimly lit carpark and while he was wholeheartedly laughing at the whole thing, I was dying a million deaths. As you can imagine, I quickly made up some excuse as to why I had to race homeward immediately and not join him for the suggested light meal of sushi, not pasta as we’d discussed before the class, which incidentally I think was perhaps aimed at trying to assist me to shrink the size of my derrière. As I sprinted towards the car, he jokingly called out that if I needed help dislodging my g-string, he was more than happy to assist. The nerve of some men! Which leads me to why I bought a dog. Apparently most people who have dogs have good temperaments themselves, you know, caring natures, patience and all those important attributes, or so the story goes. So I began searching the Internet and researching which breeds were the cutest, easiest to look after and most importantly. the type most men liked. Not those floppy fluff ball duster types! Finally top of the list after several months of research which involved interviewing all known males - a Schnauzer! Medium size, sexy, very in vogue, fit in the car, live inside, hunting skills and the ultimate reason - men especially like the breed! Right, now I’ve bought the prop, oops - I mean dog, and the matching D&G jogging suit. Need now to stake out suitable parks, running

THE ULTIMATE MAN MAGNET... tracks and cafes that serve dog-a-chinos! OK, plan ready to set in motion. One final requirement, having to name the little critter. Need a manly name and something I won’t forget. This proved a great dinner party topic actually. It was decided after several glasses of wine – the new and, perhaps only, potential addition to my family would be known as ‘Jack’. By week three of visiting the best manicured parks and walkways (I wasn’t fit enough to try out the running tracks yet) I must have met every pensioner in the district with a Chihuahua or overfed corgi. The only Prospects I’d encountered were over 70 and well, they don’t really count – not at this point, while there’s still some hope anyway. I must admit I was beginning to worry, as Jack’s cute puppy looks were starting to fade and no Prospects in sight. Then finally it happened. Whist walking the dog to get the paper, as you do on an autumn Saturday morning. Suddenly before me there ‘he’ was, a Ralph Lauren model look-alike sauntering towards me. As he glimpsed upon Jack he instantly smiled and almost bedazzled me with his pearly whites and oneday growth. He stopped immediately bent down and patted Jack, looking up at me with those ‘come to bed’ like eyes, asking the dog’s age and what his name was, and mine too. Yes thank God, finally it was going to happen – all those smelly dog biscuits had paid off. It was at this moment I was so happy I’d called Jack such an easy name to remember because at such rare times like these it is actually quite easy to forget everything and just mouth words while making high pitch squeaks simultaneously. I had to make up his age, I couldn’t damn well remember, I mean how can you when you are put on the spot like that, only mere centimetres away from a Greek Adonis. I really thought he was going to give me a business card as he reached into his trouser leg pocket. Instead he produced a Versace wallet and flipped it open to proudly reveal the picture inside – no doubt a shot of his last modelling assignment. But no – better still – a picture of his own precious Schnauzer. My mind was racing yes, yes they could frolic together while we played... I mean shared a coffee or dinner at his place or mine. As I cooed over the scruffy mattered ball of fluff, his thumb moved from partially covering the photo, revealing a gorgeous blonde ‘Jessica Simpson’ carbon copy. I reeled back as he suggested that I bring Jack over and meet the whole family. What? A family, he had children as well? Just as I thought my luck had changed. Mr Versace was married to Miss America with Country Road ankle biters to boot!
MORAL • Definitely don’t buy 100% cotton bike shorts and wear them to the gym, or probably anywhere for that matter – stick to lycra! • Check fitness outfit from all angles in mirror prior to wearing in public. • Don’t go to yoga, gym, or any other athletic session with a Prospect until you’ve gone at least several times on your own and look extremely professional at the activity. • Don’t buy a dog unless you really want one for purposes other than meeting Mr Right. They live a very long time and need daily walking – very strenuous!

The Northern Branch of Flair along with Flair South Island celebrated our 10th Anniversary in November 2005. Approximately 400 - 500 members support Flair throughout the country. Linda Jones, the Patron of the Northern Branch of Flair is Flair’s national president. The formation of the Northern Branch of Flair in November 1995, was a renaming of the “Women in Racing” group that had been formed in September 1995 as a result of a meeting at the Waikato Racing Club, of women with an interest in racing. The group had been formed to encourage women to become involved in the racing industry be it thoroughbred, harness or greyhound racing as well as actively encouraging groups of women to attend race meetings and have an enjoyable day out.

They are a supporters club of benevolent fairy godmothers who work behind the scenes to make good things happen for the industry and for those connected to it. Over the years Flair members have enjoyed visits to training establishments, held fashion parades, presneted seats to racing clubs, raised funds to present sashes, chilly and backpacks to best presented horses and best turned out strappers, sponsored races, apprentice jockeys, drivers and the amateur drivers series, acknowledged the “quiiet achievers” of the industry, presented prizes to the sixth placed horse in races where there is not a cheque, and to the horse that runs last in its race, more recently we have introduced a trophy
It was acknowledged at the time that although the industry was still fairly chauvinistic, women were now playing a major role with a number of women jockeys riding successfully against men, and women training horses in their own right. There were also hundreds of women involved behind the scenes in the three racing codes. With declining turnovers on raceday it was hoped that women, uniting under a single banner to promote the cause of racing thoughout New Zealand, would encourage others to become involved, attend race meetings and enjoy the experience.

This is a beautiful course and we were so taken by the vivid greenery and the impression that this was such a friendly race club. David Hayes
MAKES SAFETY PRODUCT COMPULSORY RACING INDUSTRY SUPPORTS A JOCKEY SAFETY WEIGHT ALLOWANCE. LEADING racehorse trainer David Hayes made the award winning product Toe Stoppers compulsory in June 2006 and supports a 0.5kg jockey weight allowance. Toe Stoppers have proven to improve a riders balance, prevent a fall and prevent a rider being dragged and have won an amazing 8 international awards, 2 Gold medals and a Silver medal and best invention 2001,2002,2003,2004,2005 including two Health & Safety awards. It is very disturbing that in the last three years there have been nine deaths, two jockeys paralysed and many more seriously injured. There have been three recent deaths in December 2006 and January 2007 a total of 306 jockeys have died in Australia. Jockeys have pleaded their case for a safety weight allowance to use the safety device Toe Stoppers. Over nine hundred racing participants including top trainers, owners and breeders have agreed jockeys should be given a specific 0.5kg weight allowance so they can use Toe Stoppers in all races. At the direction and with the assistance of ‘Worksafe’ Victoria’s Workplace Health and Safety department, “Toe Stoppers” were trialed by 70 race jockeys, track riders and trainers with the result being a glowing endorsement. The participants in this trial stated in their signed trial reports that jockeys should be given a weight allowance to use “Toe Stoppers in races”. Incidentally, of those 70 signed trial reports, riders had mentioned 68 dragging incidents that had occurred and 20% of these riders had personally been dragged on two occasions after having had a fall and five of these dragging incidents were in races. Victorian top jockey Danny Nikolic won the $2.5 million 2003 Caulfield Cup using Toe Stoppers and many other jockeys have won races using them. Jockeys, regardless of when and where they ride, should have the opportunity to be properly covered by safety gear during the performance of their job, the most dangerous professional athletic occupation in the world. “There’s no forsaking the fact that jockeys put their life on the line as many as eight times a day.” The issue of a weight allowance is a pin prick compared to the benefits with respect to jockeys being saved from injury if they suffer a fall. A wealth of clinical studies including a landmark joint statement by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), in cooperation with the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and Dietitians of Canada. “The majority of jockeys have a 2 percent to 3 percent body fat. Any doctor will tell you that under 5 percent body weight and you’re doing permanent damage to your organs.” The human body requires a constant supply of glucose for the generation of energy within every cell. permanent damage to your organs.” The human body requires a constant supply of glucose for the generation of energy within every cell. In conditions of starvation, the body begins to cannibalise vital organs to provide a supply of glucose causing permanent damage to the liver and kidneys. “Human beings have grown as a species, and a Toe Stopper weight allowance has been a long time coming.” “You’re asking grown men and women to maintain an unrealistic weight, one that is dangerously low”. Tortuous health problems endured by jockeys, attributes to severe kidney and liver problems, diabetes, heart attacks and other medical problems. With starvation, jockeys can suffer the thinning bones of osteoporosis, blood disorders, kidney and nerve damage, abnormal heart rhythms, fainting spells, muscle weakness, cramps, mood swings and depression. In extreme cases, the stomach can develop lacerations and the esophageus can rupture. Jockeys having their teeth capped because stomach acid (for the many who purge) eats away at the enamel. Consistent vomiting can also result in tooth decay, hair loss, electrolyte imbalances and, in extreme cases, organ failure. Dehydration can cause heat exhaustion. Two jockeys died in 2005 from excessive weight loss. The question has been raised in the interest of jockey health and safety why the decision makers the stewards and the ARB have not acted sooner to implement rule changes to give jockeys a specific 0.5kg weight allowance to use Toe Stoppers in all races which will reduce further injuries and deaths. GWYNETH Paltrow, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Liz Hurley swear by it. Now Goji, the Himalayan berry loved by the stars, is becoming available. It contains more than 20 trace minerals and antioxidants and a US skin specialist has dubbed it the ‘cellulite assassin’. The big question, of course, is whether the berries loved by Catherine and her A-list pals really deliver everything its supporters claim. With 500 times more vitamin C than oranges, they could bring about a sniffle-free winter and young-looking complexion. No mean feat for a berry that looks like a cross between a cranberry and a raisin and grown on vines in China, Tibet and Mongolia. However, what we really want to know is if its cellulite-busting promises the holy grail of the beauty industry are true. Can we really munch on berries to beat those dimples on thighs and bums? The berries contain dark red/orange pigments that have been linked to strengthening blood vessels in the skin. They have more betacarotene than carrots, are also rich in iron, supplying 11mg per 100g, five times more than the same serving of steak. Along with heart-and-skin-protecting vitamins, the powerful berries contain polysaccharides that fortify the immune system. Oh, and they’re also said to boost men’s sex drive and fertility. •

HIGH-TECH HELP IS AT HAND AS we move into winter, it’s time to take stock of the effects of another summer on your skin. If you don’t already, start using a sunscreen with an 30+ SPF (sun protection factor) every day – and don’t scrimp. Foundations with a cosmetic SPF are just not strong enough, says plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr Dilip Gahankari. “UV rays can cause skin damage during any season or temperature. Any sunscreen with 15 SPF or above should do the job when applied in recommended quantity at recommended frequency,” he says. Modern formulae need not leave a sheen or white residue on your skin. Look for some of the SPF30 sunscreen products by leading skincare lines, surgeon’s own brands or pharmacy ranges like Hamilton and the clear zinc range from the Cancer Council, all of which are relatively oil-free for ease of application under makeup. It will be the best beauty investment you ever make.

the skin being “sandblasted” by very fine crystals of aluminum oxide, Vitamin C and other types of mild abrasives to remove the top layer of dead skin cells. This process promotes the production of new cells in the basal (deepest) layer of the dermis. According to Dr Dilip, the procedure can clean your pores incredibly well and hinder any future breaks-outs when used on a regular basis. “Microdermabrasion also stimulates collagen networking to further even out skin texture and appearance,” he says, adding that the best candidates for microdermabrasion are individuals with acne prone and blotchy skin, small scars, wrinkles, keratoses, large pores, milia (non-inflamed whiteheads caused by keratin-clogged pores), or sebaceous hyperplasia. “If you have sun damage or uneven texture good treatment as a preparation for more invasive treatments such as chemical peels.”

Compared to the beauty salon version of the procedure, the microdermabrasion procedure offered in practices like Dr Dilip’s are undertaken using state of the art ‘medical grade’ equipment by extensively trained and experienced staff.

This is the ideal time of year to undertake microdermabrasion, since you are advised to avoid direct sun exposure for at least 7 days after a treatment. “We do stress the importance of using a high quality sun protection product as well as minimizing sun exposure. Exposure to UV radiation is one of the key factors in speeding the skin aging process,” warns Dr Dilip.
SKIN RESURFACING IN A BOTTLE
For more pronounced facial lines and wrinkles, Dr Dilip recommends treatment with Botulinium Toxin (Botox) and the filler, Restylane. With more than 90 uses, Botox has become the most popular cosmetic procedure worldwide and was first FDA approved decades ago in the US to treat patients with crossed-eyes! “Botox is useful for crows feet lines, vertical frown lines and horizontal forehead lines. These lines are all caused by muscles of facial expression and the injection works by causing the muscles which form the lines to become inactive. Botox can also be used to treat excessive sweating under the arms, which is an extremely debilitating and embarrassing complaint.” For the face, the treatment takes a matter of minutes, and improvement can be noticed as soon as 48 hours after, with the maximum benefit after two weeks, lasting for three to six months in the majority of people. Restylane is a temporary “filler” that act to lift up or fill in lines, folds or scars and add volume to lips. Restylane is non-animal sourced, stabilized hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is present in everybody’s skin, like collagen, making it a natural means of addressing the signs of ageing. Treatment is a little more complex than Botox. As Dr Dilip explains: “A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area to be treated and treatment time is about half an hour. Usually it is possible to return to normal activities straight away although some temporary swelling can occur when the lips are enhanced. Restylane usually lasts six months although with certain lines, it can last longer.” Once again, the difference between procedures performed by a beauty salon or a cosmetic surgeon compared to a qualified plastic surgeon is specific: training. It takes eight to 10 years of extra training on top of a medical degree to qualify as a plastic surgeon. The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons is recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons as the legitimate professional body representing the field of cosmetic surgery in this country. Call the Society on 1300 367 446 to check credentials or with queries. •

CHANGING THE FACE OF CHEMICAL PEELS INTRODUCING THE PEELS OF TODAY AND TOMORROW
TRADITIONAL chemical peels typically consist of chemical solutions applied to the skin to form flakes or blisters that eventually peel off. This painful and unsightly technology destroys healthy tissue, forcing the body to heal itself. Instead CosMedix chirally correct, non-traumatic peels succeed by encouraging healthy change and less peeling and down time. The soothing collagen therapy enhances the skin’s appearance, hence resulting in a beautiful, renewed complexion. A peel revitalises the appearance of the skin, often making it smoother and more radiant. The procedure is sometimes used on other parts of the body, including the neck and hands. Chirally correct chemical peels are associated with better ingredients which cause less down time, and fewer unfavorable side-effects than other chemical peels. No anesthesia is required for chirally correct chemical peels and they are safe enough to be repeated regularly. Today’s Peels, such as the Blueberry Smoothie, The Benefit Peel and the Purity Peel, are natural Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA) to help freshen and exfoliate the skin. These peels can be used without any prior preparation of the skin. Tomorrow’s Peels, such as the Timeless Peel, are designed to improve the appearance of the damage done yesterday. They are stronger treatments and make the skin look tighter and smoother. The skin needs 10–30 days advance preparation prior to application. Peels are often used to improve the appearance of: Acne Ageing skin Dull, weathered skin Blotchy pigmentation Sun spots Dark skin discoloration Wrinkles. When considering chemical peels, it is important to speak to a skincare professional who is trained to perform these types of treatments. The professional can then determine which peels are correct for each individual patient. • For an appointment to see one of our nurse aestheticians please phone Dr. Craig Layt’s, Restore Rejuvenate Respect 07 5597 4100 or visit www.drlayt.com
