The objective to improve a horse’s welfare via the buildings it inhabits is seemingly straightforward but the benefits can be farreaching. ElysianFields
HEAVEN IS SIMPLY According to Homer’s Odyssey, Elysian Fields lay somewhere near the river Oceanus and it would also be the closest to what most people consider “Heaven” to be like, or so the story goes. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL BARTELS THE “Elysian Fields,” like that depicted by Homer, is a wonderful place where everything is delightful. Such was our day attending the Elysian International Showjumping Classic, held at Canungra, nestled in the Gold Coast Hinterland. We experienced a day full of five stars. THE DROUGHT AND EQUINE INFLUENZA
AT Arundel Park Riding for the Disabled we are celebrating the start of a new year with relief showing on the faces of our few dedicated staff and many devoted volunteers. The centre, having been opened for 25 years, was close to closing its doors last August due to the drought causing our feed bill to increase to $2000 a week and then we were struck with the devastating blow of a lock-down due to Equine Influenza. Arundel Park Riding for the Disabled provides opportunities for people ranging in age from four years old to late 50s with physical and intellectual disabilities. There are over 100
riders that are currently having lessons at our centre and for most riders it is not just for the therapy that they ride but also a sporting and social highlight of their week.
and builds self confidence just to name a few.
There are four disciplines of riding at our centre, hippotherapy (with a physiotherapist working with the horse and rider) riding lessons, vaulting and carriage driving. A dressage class is due to start in the next term. With this range of classes we are able to cover a broad section of riders and disabilities.

With community support and the recent rain that has meant that feed is at a more affordable price, the Centre is looking forward We are very reliant on the kindness of donations to keep our centre running and at the moment we are on the lookout for quiet, bomb-proof ponies as quite a few of our horses have had to be retired. or donations please ring our office on (07) 5594 0305.
