Fashion Tips

Top Ten

By Dale Olsson

The Winter Racing Carnival is the perfect place for fashion fillies to strut

their stuff, and who doesn’t love the chance to don their finest and vie for the opportunity to win great prizes? Owner of The Hat Box, Dale Olsson, relishes the opportunity to use her stylist skills to assist her clients to co-ordinate their outfits from top to toe for major race days. And the results speak for themselves with regular Fashions on the Field wins at tracks all over Australia. So what should you wear to win and do you need more than just a great outfit? “Definitely,” agrees Dale. “It’s the whole package that impresses the judges.” So for those fashionistas wishing to take a punt on the fashion stakes, here are Dale’s top ten tips to help you get a head start. 1 A shade and style of outfit which suits your body type and colouring. Do

not choose a colour and design simply because it’s in fashion. 2 Make sure your hat or fascinator co-ordinates with your outfit and

doesn’t overpower it. 3 Never choose more than three colours in your ensemble. 4 Bags and shoes no longer need to be colour-matched, however, make

sure that every aspect of your ensemble blends well. For example, you could match your hat to your shoes or your bag to your dress. Dress according to the season. No bare shoulders or sandals. Even if the day is warm, outfits must still contain a nod to winter. Dress according to the occasion. Racewear is formal day wear, not cocktail wear. Pay attention to detail. It’s the quirky little touches like dainty leather gloves or a vintage velvet bag that can catch the judges’ eyes. Good grooming is essential as is deportment. Stand up straight and smile at the judges. An extroverted personality is a bonus. Judges love confidence – they like to see you having a good time.

10 Enjoy the experience.

Thousands of Queenslanders who are owners

or part-owners of racehorses have felt their hearts race as a jockey riding hands and heels brings their horse down the home straight.

There are many ways for people to become involved in racing as horse owners. These range
