Archer’s victory was the first of two for the horse and the first of five for aspiring trainer Etienne de Mestre who would quickly gain a reputation as a fine horseman. Women In Racing Inc had previously supported those within the racing industry who has been affected by ill-health or death, as a result of their involvement in racing. Recipients included Riding for the Disabled, National Breast Cancer Foundation, and several jockeys or their families. As a result of this epidemic, it was felt by the two Directors of Women In Racing Inc, Jennifer Bartels and Baslyn Beel, an opportunity arose to become involved in the Equine Influenza Research by directing their fund-raising to this cause established through Griffith University, Gold Coast. The aim of this support has been to assist the Research Department through a series of fundraisers with all monies raised going to the Institute. Although only small donations are raised, (one little step) the important role of Women In Racing is to highlight the seriousness of the Influenza and the impact it has on people’s livelihood. consumption, lower profits, lower commodity, equity and asset prices, businesses are under stress, tax income has been forecasted to drop $115 billion over the next 4 years, and natural disasters are impacting creating hardship for businesses and communities. The Australian Horse Industry remains in turmoil as the question of whether the Tax Office considers whether a taxpayers activities to be carried on as a business or hobby is still considered largely a grey area. Top Ten
for Ladies
By Dale Olsson The Spring Racing Carnival is the perfect place for fashion fillies to strut
their stuff, and who doesn’t love the chance to don their finest and vie for the opportunity to win great prizes? Owner of The Hat Box, Dale Olsson, relishes the opportunity to use her stylist skills to assist her clients to co-ordinate their outfits from top to toe for major race days. And the results speak for themselves with regular Fashions on the Field wins at tracks all over Australia. So what should you wear to win and do you need more than just a great outfit? “Definitely,” agrees Dale. “It’s the whole package that impresses the judges.” So for those fashionistas wishing to take a punt on the fashion stakes, here are Dale’s top ten tips to help you get a head start. 1 A shade and style of outfit which suits your body type and colouring.
Do not choose a colour and design simply because it’s in fashion. 2 Make sure your hat or fascinator co-ordinates with your outfit and
doesn’t overpower it. 3 Never choose more than three colours in your ensemble. 4 Bags and shoes no longer need to be colour-matched, however, make

sure that every aspect of your ensemble blends well. For example, you could match your hat to your shoes or your bag to your dress. Dress according to the season. Even though the weather is warm, don’t flash too much flesh and felt hats are strictly for winter. Dress according to the occasion. Racewear is formal day wear, not cocktail wear. Pay attention to detail. It could be an interesting piece of jewellery or a handmade silk corsage that will catch the judge’s eye. Good grooming is essential as is deportment. Stand up straight and smile at the judges. An extroverted personality is a bonus. Judges love confidence – they like to see you having a good time.
10 Enjoy the experience.

Maryon’s Shoes
Maryon’s Designer Shoes was established
on the Gold Coast, in a small shop in The Chevron Arcade some thirty-six years ago by Maryon Campbell. The business has expanded to become one of the most iconic purveyors of Italian, French and Spanish footwear, and unique accessories in Australia. The company now boasts four stores in Queensland – Maryon’s on Tedder, Main Beach, Maryon’s Emporium, Fortitude Valley, Maryon’s Brisbane Arcade, Brisbane City as well as a destination outlet store at Stones Corner, Brisbane. Due to the demand from interstate and international clients, Maryon began to produce her mail order catalogues seasonally – well before Internet shopping and the like, were in vogue. They have provided beautiful shoes to women across the globe. Maryon’s is now servicing their third generation of clients and she has handed the reins on to her daughter, Claire, continuing the legacy for future generations of shoe addicts. Maryon’s currently have a fantastic wide range of labels from the top European designers, including Tod’s, Clergerie, Dolce and Gabbana, Sonia Rykiel, Armani, Marc Jacobs, Celine, Christian Lacroix and Givenchy. They also stock an extensive range of luxury bags, belts, wallets, watches and other fabulous accessories. Maryon’s prides itself on its unique customer service and provides a luxury range of European Imports. Maryon’s commitment for a further thirty-six years will see them continually providing beautiful shoes and accessories to the women of the world! 32

Editor’s Note Herbal ACTIV Peel™ Is a fantastic peel that gives long lasting results. I had this peel done by Joy at ACTIVE SKIN SOLUTIONS at Paradise Point and found it to rejuvenate and refine my skin, leaving it smooth and very clean. It is a nontoxic peel, with no side effects, not harmful to the skin, and apart from the days where my skin felt mildly sunburnt, it was not uncomfortable at all. After five days, Joy gave me a beautiful post – peel facial which revealed my new skin. I would recommend this peel to anyone who is obligations for the next two – three days. During

Brighten Up
for Summer
We all love summer but with the sunny season comes skin concerns like hyperpigmentation – the term used for brown spots, freckles and darker patches. The star in every woman’s beauty cabinet should be sunscreen. Choose one with a high spf and get into the habit of applying it daily. But, don’t expect it to do all the work. Cover up as much as possible and try to avoid the sun.

“Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world,” says Professor Ian Olver, CEO of Cancer Council Australia. Using sunscreen daily is an important part of any beauty routine to minimise the risk of premature ageing, sunspots and skin cancers. Visible signs of damage to the skin by exposure includes increased lines and wrinkling, irregular pigmentation, loss of elasticity and a variation in skin texture. Applying a sunscreen today can help prevent these conditions and possible major concerns further down the track.

New “Pearl” Laser Renews Skin’s Surface with Significantly Faster Results
and fine lines without the downtime, risk, or
repetitive treatments associated with today’s other technologies, is now available from Dr Craig Layt’s Clinic. “There is no other laser like this. It’s like a TCA peel with the controlled depth and full epidermal turnover” says Dr Layt. “My patients say their skin feels amazingly soft, like the new skin of a baby. With some other laser technologies, patients must wait up to six months to see the full results.” The Pearl procedure is ideal for patients of almost any age searching for a safe and uncomplicated way to restore the skin’s youthful look and feel in only one or two treatments. It is the answer for patients who want quicker results and less downtime than other procedures available today. How it works: • During the procedure, pulses of light are gently delivered to the epidermis. • The laser simultaneously sends heat to the 56

deeper layers of skin to stimulate longerterm collagen growth. • A natural protective layer forms on the skin. • The treated skin will look slightly sunburned. • On day three or four the protective layer will peel away, leaving new, healthy, vibrant skin with a ‘pearl-like’ glow, underneath. The Pearl laser, made by Cutera Inc, is TGA approved and is the first application of the 2,790nm laser wavelength for cosmetic dermatology. This advanced technology provides the most ideal balance between cosmetic benefit and minimal downtime. The Pearl and Pearl Fractional procedures are personally performed by Dr Layt.
