Born t o By Karen Harding

In just half a lifetime Emma Boling has achieved much in horse racing – success as an owner, breeder, administrator and now author. But this dedicated racegoer’s own story would make a great read itself. Karen Harding talks to her about life, racing and her next book.

Emma Boling’s first book was called Riding High and the working title for her second is Bloodlines. If someone was to write her biography, neither title would be out of place. Riding High … this is not to suggest that her life, which she describes as fortunate, has been without sadness or tragedy. But she has ridden over the bumps and come out a better, wiser person, she hopes, at the other end. Just like racing, with all its ups and downs, high and lows. There is always another day. Emma is also the daughter of a well-known magazine editor. Like her mother, she started in journalism before finding her way into racehorse breeding. Bloodlines. Her story has come full circle, from the little girl who wanted to be an author to the adult who did, with a bit of life and its vagaries in the middle. It all started at Moonee Valley, where she is now a Committee Member. Her parents, though not really into racing themselves, took the family as an outing a handful of times per year. And Emma was immediately captivated. Karen Harding has been going to the races since she was four years old. She is co-director of Harding Media which edits Inside Racing for Racing Victoria Limited and produces international television shows including Racing World, Champions of Racing, Spring Classics and Spring. 8

“He was such an incredibly successful writer; to be likened to any writer of that ilk is terrific.” Yet, surprisingly perhaps for such a racing afficionado and avid reader, Emma is yet to read one of his novels. Felix Francis, son of Dick and his writing partner for the final few novels before Dick’s death in February this year , has given her a copy of their latest book which she will read when Bloodlines is finished. In the meantime, she is hard at work. The second book is due out later this year, though a publication date is yet to be finalised. A committee member of Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria as well as Moonee Valley, Emma currently part-owns two horses which are with Michael Moroney and hopes at some later stage to go back to breeding albeit in a different way. A notable meeting during the years at Bundamba was the 1960 Centenary Cup won by Sir Hua Joy and presented by the then Governor Sir Henry Abel Smith. Also at this meeting there were exhibition track gallops performed by the 1959 Melbourne Cup winner Macdougal, and the Champion weight for age performer Tulloch. The Ipswich Cup has been on the calendar since 1934 and has grown in recent times to the point of attracting the largest attendance in Queensland Racing in the past season.

well as visiting international trainers from New Zealand such as Richard Otto. The growing national appeal of Ipswich Cup Day was clearly evident in 2009 when 33 entrants were from outside of Queensland including 7 gallopers from New Zealand. In 2010, several major events are planned to celebrate the rich history and strong current position of the ITC after 150 years of racing. On Saturday May 8th the running of the Anniversary Cup will take place – a 2150m race for three year olds offering $50,000 in prizemoney. On this day there will be much more than racing with the Ipswich Mile Gift foot race cash up for grabs, an Ipswich Tourism and Hospitality Expo on site, the St Edmunds Foundation marquee, free children’s entertainment, and a concert immediately after the races featuring the Carol Lloyd Band.

Other major events in 2010 include the Ipswich Cup on June 19th. The two year old race on that day is to be re-named as the Grange Plate in recognition of the Ipswich birthplace of racing. Later in the year the Melbourne Cup tour is to take in Ipswich which is fitting given that the race that stops a nation will conduct its 150th running in 2010.

This naming of the ITC in the top 20 meetings nationally reflects the growth of Ipswich Racing from a local amateur entity to a Nationalised, Professional entity. In recent years the Ipswich Cup has been won by nationally famous trainers such as Bart Cummings and Gai Waterhouse, as

Top from left: The mighty Phar Lap won only one Melbourne Cup just days after race-fixers tried to shoot him – and he later died of arsenic poisoning; With crowds like this, little wonder they say the Melbourne Cup “is the race that stops a nation”; Jockey Glenn Boss rode Makybe Diva to Melbourne Cup victories in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Melbourne Cups didn’t always runneth over By David Ellis Owners of nags that have won the Melbourne Cup haven’t always been the most appreciative types when it’s come to accepting their prizes – but then they didn’t get what owners do today when their steeds win the richest handicap horse race in the world. In fact when Toryboy won the Cup in 1865 his owner was so horrified with his trophy that he sold it. And in the early 1890s others growled when their ‘cups’ turned out to be not grand gold or silver affairs to show off on the mantle-piece, but rather bone-china types for taking tea. And John Mayo whose horse Lord Nolan won the Cup in 1908 didn’t even get a cup at all: he got a near-metre long wooden plaque atop a garish red base, and on which was mounted a silver silhouette of a galloping horse – that local wits reported looked more like a galloping greyhound. While somewhat bemused, Mr Mayo accepted his winnings in good spirit from the Governor-General – to whom he’d earlier given a tip that Lord Nolan would win the Cup – and took his horse and his trophy home to Newcastle. Another of the more unusual Melbourne Cup trophies was that won by Mentor in the Centennial Year 1888. It comprised three silver horses on a silver-plated base, the lot weighing 280 ounces (nearly 8kg) and costing around $5,000. When 26

it sold at auction in 1987 it fetched a whopping $177,000. In some years there were no trophies at all, just cash, and from 1942 to 1944 Cup winners were awarded War Bonds. The first Melbourne Cup winner’s prize in 1861 was a gold watch. It was won by the owners of the great Archer which had been walked 800km from Nowra to Melbourne by a group of stable-hands, a journey that took three weeks – and the horse won again the following year, but this time got to Melbourne by steamer. The first owner to publicly criticise his Cup trophy was Mr B.C. Marshall, when his Toryboy won the 1865 race. The outspoken Melbourne draper told Victoria Racing Club officials his $200 silver bowl topped with a horse and rider was “a monstrosity,” and promptly sold it to the Flemington Hunt Club which inscribed it with the names of winners of its annual Hunt until Melbourne ran out of foxes. Melbourne stockbroker W.T. Jones was the first ‘teaand coffee-cup’ recipient when his horse Bravo won the Cup in 1889. As well as a purse of cash, his prize contained a set each of cups, saucers, tea and coffee pots, presumably so he could have folk around to discuss Bravo’s success. Similar packages continued to be awarded over the next few years, prompting one outraged owner to tell the Melbourne Press that such trophies were “to the proper glory of the Melbourne Cup as flat soda water is to live Champagne.”

www.womeninracingmagazine.com.au

The controversial prizes were replaced by more conservative trophies in the early 1900s, after Mr Mayo received that somewhat cumbersome plaque for Lord Nolan’s win. Mr Mayo had never doubted his horse would win the Cup, and on a tram from his Melbourne hotel to the race track proffered such advice to anyone listening – and at the track, to Governor-General, Lord Dudley. After the race, the G-G confided how “a strange, grey-headed old man told me before the race that Lord Nelson would win; I took little notice – then to my astonishment he came up to collect his prize.” By the 1920s a ‘loving cup’ design had been permanently adopted; today’s gold cups are valued at around $190,000 each – and for good measure come with cash components for first, second and third place winners comprising a cosy $5.5m. Little wonder the race now attracts starters from England, Ireland, Japan, the USA, Germany and the UAE. HOOFNOTE: Most successful Melbourne Cup trainer, Bart Cummings has had 11 winners, while jockeys Harry White and Bobbie Lewis share riding honours with four wins each. And the legendary Phar Lap that was bought for a mere $330 and earned over $100,000 in prize money, won only one Melbourne Cup from three starts – in 1930. Race-fixing criminals had tried to shoot him four days before the race, and he later died of arsenic poisoning.

What price for

With the cost of life insurance dropping, why is

Australia one of the most underinsured nations in the developed world? In the past 15 years, the cost of life insurance has shrunk substantially with premiums having fallen by around 45 per cent in that time, but the same basket of goods now costs 50 per cent more1. In fact, the monthly premium for a 35 year old female non-smoker applying for $500,000 of life cover is generally as low as $252. A survey of claims in 2008 revealed that 13,000 Australian families received an average payout of just $91,000 on the death of a partner. With the average Australian household debt for a family with children under the age of five being $167,000, the average claims payout highlights the underinsurance problem3. The low level of cover means that if Australians need to claim, they may find the benefit they receive to be insufficient to their needs. Around 83 per cent of Australians say they have car insurance, yet less than 31 per cent have income protection insurance, according to the Investment and Financial Services Association (IFSA). Why would their most valuable assets, their life and ability to earn an income, not be afforded the same priority?

Consider the following:4 • More than 60 per cent of Australians will be disabled for more than one month during their working life. • More than 15 per cent will be disabled for more than three months during their working life. • One in six men, and one in four women, is expected to suffer a disability from the age of 35 to 65 that causes a loss of six months from work. So consider the consequences of not being able to work for six months, or a year, or more as a result of illness or injury. Or, worse still, the death of the family’s breadwinner. While nothing can compensate for the emotional loss that such a catastrophe causes, it is possible to protect your family or business finances by putting in place appropriate personal risk insurance.

So, if you prefer the peace of mind that comes with knowing that, whatever happens in the future, you and your dependents are financially secure, review your personal risk insurance cover today. Major exhibition at the queensland art gallery Christian Dior Haute Couture Autumn Winter 2007 60th Anniversary celebration show at L'Orangerie du Chateau de Versailles

27 March – 27 June 2010 Gallery 4, Queensland Art Gallery

Exhibition organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

The Queensland Art Gallery is the exclusive Australian venue for a

spectacular exhibition exploring the art of millinery.

‘Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones’ is the result of a collaboration between London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) and one of the world’s foremost milliners, Stephen Jones. Exploring the fascinating world of millinery, the exhibition presents more than 250 hats and iconic headpieces from the V&A’s extensive collection and Jones’s own archive. The exhibition includes historical items and iconic hats, such as a twelfthcentury Egyptian fez, a wide-brimmed black silk tulle hat from Christian Dior’s first collection in 1948, Mary Quant’s c.1968 navy blue beret, and Stephen Jones’s ‘Wash n’ Go’ hat, molded from clear plastic to resemble a splash of water, from Spring Summer 1993. It also features hats worn by historical and cultural icons: Elsa Schiaparelli’s black felt beret worn by Marlene Dietrich in Witness for the Prosecution in 1957; Philip Treacy’s bridal headpiece created for Camilla Parker-Bowles’s marriage to the Prince of Wales in 2005; and Jones’s own creations, such as Mick Jagger’s hat worn for the Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang World Tour and Kylie Minogue’s visor headdress for her Showgirl tour.

© catwalking.com with permission Queensland Art Gallery

‘Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones’ examines the world of millinery from the inside out, following the life of a hat through the stages of inspiration and creation to the salon and, finally, to the client who gives the hat its ultimate purpose and flourish. The exhibition has been designed to evoke a fantastical garden in which groups of hats are arranged like decorative floral bouquets.

‘Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones’ provides an opportunity for audiences to delight in the frivolity of hats, but also to learn about their personal, cultural and historical significance. Publication: The hardcover catalogue, Hats: An Anthology by Stephen

Jones will be available for purchase at the Gallery Store and online. 42

The Queensland Racehorse Owners Association (QROA) represents over 18,000 owners who have racing interests in the Sunshine State. All these owners are Associate Members of the QROA and receive the very popular ‘Owners Card’. The Owners Card was a joint initiative between the QROA, Queensland Racing and RISA, with vital support from all the major TAB race clubs. Owners Card holders are recognised at these clubs throughout Queensland, and enable holders to free entry to both the track and members area at each club at a majority of meetings each year. The QROA also offers Full Membership to the association from just $55 per year. Full membership entitles members to a range of benefits including invitations to events and

The most unique racecourse in the world

Setting new standards, exceeding boundaries

and developing a worldly wonderland from a desert landscape is nothing new for Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates. Plans for the new Meydan Racecourse and Hotel were announced during the Dubai World Cup two years ago. Nad el Sheba had outgrown its capacity to entertain the worldly set who descend on Dubai every year to witness the richest race run. This decision was made and

realised by Dubai’s ruler, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who has always had visions for his Emirate. This racing precinct has set a precedent for other countries to equal or emulate such a world-class facility, but I doubt if we shall ever see such a monolithic structure again in our time. Apart from a racecourse, Meydan will become a great tourist attraction especially for international racing aficionados who will no doubt make a pilgrimage to the sacred course. Its design is also intended as a hub for the business community and an entertainment venue. Notable performers, Sting, Sir Elton John and Santana have all recently played at this course. Those who wish to attend Meydan for thoroughbred and Arabian racing fixtures now have the added advantage of booking into the majestic Meydan Hotel, moulded into the gigantic grandstand, and viewing the races not

The terrace which stretches the full length of the Meydan Hotel. I had the thrill of being shown through the complex and as I had anticipated, it was marvellously modern, perfectly positioned and convenient for those patrons not wishing to join hospitality tents, private boxes or the grandstand, stretching to nearly a kilometre long. One can even cool off in the rooftop pool on the 11th floor, lifeguard and all, and cheer on your favourite horse. This infinity pool appears to just blend in with the world’s most modern track and is always in sight.

2009 Rolling Spar kling Pinot Gr igio Chardonnay When used to make sparkling wine, Pinot Grigio creates a wonderful zesty, applely freshness without the biting acidity that can sometimes be found in inexpensive fizz. Pinot Grigio’s great texture and softness lends itself perfectly to the elegance of the sparkling classic Chardonnay. Together the Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay create a unique blend, in a new style from an emerging wine region. Winemaker Debbie Lauritz and the team selected a single block of Pinot Grigio and of Chardonnay that developed flavour ripeness earlier and retained a lot of natural acidity making them an excellent choice for sparkling fruit. The Pinot Grigio (55%) and Chardonnay (45%) were blended to attain the best balance of fruit weight, texture and crispness with the final blend matured on yeast lees for a further four months prior to secondary fermentation. Being a vintage sparkling the labelling lets you ensure that you can always enjoy this wine when it is at its best – young and vibrant.

2006 Blue Pyrenees Vintage Br ut The 2006 Vintage Brut expresses the special quality of its component wines to create a consistent house style. The Blue Pyrenees team has incorporated the best cuvées from the three classic sparkling varieties – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, which represent excellence in varietal and regional character. The judicious use of small amounts of reserve wine adds complexity and maturity whilst helping to maintain consistency from year to year. The complex aromas of baker’s dough, freshly baked biscuits and nougat are evidence of extended aging on yeast lees. Subtle hints of lemon and confection give an overall impression of freshness and vitality. The 2006 Blue Pyrenees Estate Vintage Brut exhibits a fine and persistent bead, concentrated yeast autolysis characters and grapefruit flavours. The lively palate is driven by a fresh acidity, which lingers harmoniously with the aged complexity. Released as a mature style it is ready to appreciate now.

Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte Affectionately known as ‘Australia’s own champagne’ since founder Nicolas Feuillatte lives in Sydney six months of the year, the wine first entered the market in 1970s New York and became a favourite with icons such as Jackie Onassis and Sophia Loren. The NV Brut is at the core of the Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte range, and comprises youthful fresh aromas and rich complex clean flavours, in a friendly style, that reflects the natural fruit character and terroir of the vineyards. The final blend, an assemblage from over 200 individual wines, takes over eight weeks to create and comprises of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier and 20% Chardonnay. It is a pale gold elegant wine marked by a floral, fruit nose and a smooth, balanced palate. Sophisticated, youthful, and dynamic Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte is not tied to an old historic house style from centuries past. It is well known for its modern production cellars on the outskirts of Epernay in the heart of the Champagne region.
