Welcome to this issue of Women in RACING Magazine. What a great time I had in Melbourne over the Spring Racing Carnival! I was lucky enough to be a guest of Monee Valley, where I attended the Cox Plate as well as the David Jones fashion Luncheon. Moonee Valley is a great track and everyone should check out their wonderful new night racing schedule. I attended the AAMI Derby Day and the Emirates Melbourne Cup and, despite the weather, the atmosphere and racing was incredible. I attended the annual Cup Eve Luncheon at Guy Rossi’s fabulous Florentino Restaurant in Melbourne and also had the great pleasure of attending the Crown Oaks Day Ladies’ Luncheon held at the Ballroom in the Crown Palladium. I was thoroughly amazed at the colourful fashions that were displayed at each and every event and race day and I will definitely be back for the 2011 celebrations next year.

FROM THE

The Queensland Women in Racing Inc. were lucky enough to have the Melbourne Cup trophy in attendance for their Melbourne Cup Luncheon on October 19th, 2010. Read about it on page 14. This issue we will look ahead to the 2011 BMW Magic Millions Carnival and the fashion, glamour and events that surround it. With the curtains closed on another successful Spring Racing Carnival, all attention is now on the Gold Coast Turf Club as it prepares to put on their biggest race meet for the year. Future champions will be paraded at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale, and luncheons, race days, fashion and events will bring flocks of racing aficionados from the Gold Coast and all over Australia. You can read about this year’s BMW Magic Millions on page 8. The new Patinack Blue Diamond Stakes will take off on January 26 at Caulfield Race Track, with an amazing new $1 million bonus for any horse to win all three races. March 19 will see the beginning of Sydney’s AAMI Golden Slipper Festival held at Rosehill. If you have ever been confused about the different types of races in Australia, Ron William’s explains all our different races – page 20 is a must-read!

I was lucky enough to meet Milliner Minette Collins at the Women in Racing Inc. “Our Cup Runneth Over Lunch”. Minette created the beautiful hat featured on the cover of our previous issue.

We celebrate the achievements of some outstanding women in the racing industry. We look at Australia’s darling of racing, Gai Waterhouse. From battling with racing authorities to obtain her trainer’s license, to the undisputed Queen of the Turf, the Gai Waterhouse story is one of continual triumphs. See page 4. Victoria Armstrong is another to inspire. From a successful career in podiatry to a thriving business, and now her posting as Ballarat Turf Club President you can read about her story on page 30. We also look at outstanding equine vet, Dr Susannah Hawke and the pleasing influx of female jockeys proving that it takes more than mere strength to ride a winner. Did you know the racing industry generates an incredible amount of employment in Australia? Not only that, but the lead-up to racing carnivals generates huge amounts of spending on fashion, second only to Christmas! So where ever you will be over the next few months, enjoy your race days. Happy punting!

I judged Myer Fashions On The Field earlier this year, and I can’t wait to see what the Gold Coast will bring to the competition this summer. “The summer season is all about bright colours. horse racing across the world can trace back to a mere three stallions and less than one hundred original mares. Through such genetic restrictions, desirable traits such as speed and stamina have been honed across the centuries to produce the modern race horse. But of course the science of genetics and the subsequent mapping of equine genes is only a very recent tool to assist breeders, and over the years detrimental traits were bred in along with those most coveted. The three original stallions – the Darley Arabian, Godolphin Arabian and Byerley Turk – all came from eastern blood as their names suggest. While the latter two stallions are now poorly represented, the dominant Darley Arabian line currently accounts for over 80% of all horses. When it comes to international bloodlines, Australia is strategically positioned, allowing the best stallions from commercial studs around the world to serve both hemispheres in their respective springs. Around 4,700 yearlings are sold at sale each year in Australia out of approximately 16,000 born. A commercial stallion fee can range anywhere from a few 22

During the season a busy stallion generally serves three or four times a day and can serve as many as 200 mares in a season. As not every mare gets in foal first time around, he also has to re-serve the misses. Gestation is just over eleven months when a foal is usually born during the night and is up on spindly legs within the hour. The night time foaling and quick activity of the little one harks back to days in the wild where horses needed to be on the move to avoid predators. To reach the yearling sales, a youngster will undergo a ten to twelve week preparation.

The premier sales in Australia are the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale on January 12-21st 2011 and the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sales on April 5-7th 2011 which grossed $66.64 million and $80 million respectively in 2010. The highest price paid for a yearling last year was $1.875 million for a Redoubts Choice colt at Easter. For the full sales calendars check out www.magicmillions.com.au and www.inglis.com.au.

Other recent Group 1 winners who punched above their price tag include: BTC Doomben 10,000 and AJC All-Aged Stakes winner Hot Danish who fetched only $38,000 at the Scone Yearling sales; MRC Thousand Guineas winner Yosei passed in at a weanling sale with a reserve of only $15,000; winner of the BRC Stradbroke Handicap Black Piranha sold as a weanling for $16,000 and the 2009 VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume passed in at auction for $40,000. Spring Racing CAULFIELD

Caulfield hosted three days of recordbreaking racing action during the 2010 Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival.

The Age Caulfield Guineas Day will live in the memories of everyone who witnessed four outstanding performances, three of them in Group 1 races, by four of the country’s finest and most talented racehorses. Brilliant sprinting mare Black Caviar made it six wins from six starts, Gai Waterhouses’s best mare, More Joyous and Spring sensation, So You Think all won with ease while the feature race was captured by Anacheeva, trained locally by premier trainer, Peter Moody. Schweppes Thousand Guineas Day is affectionately known as Ladies Day and it proved to be just that. Michelle Payne, racing’s sweetheart of the saddle, became the first female jockey to win the $500,000 feature event for fillies when she delivered a text-book ride on Yosei to claim victory. The success of racing’s elite women at Caulfield continued into BMW Caulfield Cup Day when racing’s first lady, Gai Waterhouse, won her first BMW Caulfield Cup amid wet conditions. Waterhouse, who had come so close on a couple of previous occasions, was the toast of the town when Descarado won the $2.5 million BMW Caulfield Cup giving her a taste of feature success in Melbourne.

A Timely Switch

for The 2010 Ballarat Cup By Ron Williams

The decision by the Ballarat Turf Club to alter the day of the Listed Ballarat Cup from

the traditional Wednesday to a Sunday for the first time since its inaugural running in 1864, just three years after the first Melbourne Cup was run, proved to be an outstanding success. A crowd in excess of 13,500 attended the meeting at their Dowling Forest Racecourse which was held in glorious sunshine. The Ballarat Cup has a long and distinguished history and the prize money of $130,000 for the Cup attracted a first class field.

Kyneton Cups with his gallopers Starmon and Red Buttons. My Bentley had good form going into the race, the six year old gelding having run second in the Cranbourne and Bendigo Cups in two of his last three starts.

My Bentley was superbly ridden by Brad Rawiller in the colours of the OTI Racing Syndicate which is managed by the former Australian Cricketer Simon O’Donnell and Terry Henderson. The well known Herald Sun racing journalist Adam Hamilton was another very happy owner; together with J. Eccles, R. Bennett, S. Emery and members of the Karash Group 5; Go With the

previously in 2000 on Royal Caliph. It was a well deserved success for Rawiller who used all of his considerable riding skills to navigate a winning path through the field to win, and who in the days leading up to the race had had to lose a couple of kilos from his normal riding weight to ride My Bentley at 54 kgs. Rawiller said it was tough going, but he wanted to repay the faith that Kent had shown him in the past. Kent is now giving My Bentley a few weeks in the paddock before setting him for Cups in the new year in Tasmania and/or Adelaide.

Ballarat has a lot to offer besides first class racing and amenities at their picturesque racecourse if you decide to make a weekend of your trip. There are plenty of attractions for visitors including Sovereign Hill, Begonia Festival, Eureka Stockade, the Gold Museum and many more. There is also an abundance of hotels, motels and fine dining establishments. We had the good fortune to have a meal on Cup eve at the iconic Golden City Hotel known as GC’s. Live long

and prosper Australians are living longer and enjoying more productive retirements than ever before.

Australian men can expect to live until the age of 79, while the average Australian woman lives until 84.* This puts Australia up there with the most advanced societies in the world – our life expectancy is the fourth highest for men and third highest for women.† Getting on top of your superannuation early and formulating a long-term savings plan will see you best placed to prosper in your retirement.

Changing face of retirement… By 2041, one in five Australians will be over 65 years of age and 7 per cent of the population will be over 80, representing the fastest growing sector of the population.‡ As we live longer, many of us are opting to retire earlier than ever. In 2007, the average age of retirement was 47 for women and 58 for men, which means we may end up pending as long retired as we did in the workforce.§ And the nature of retirement is changing. It’s now a reward for hard work – a chance to develop new hobbies or travel the world. But do you have enough saved to fund your retirement dreams?

Older workers offer years of experience, valuable skills, and tend to be highly motivated. Companies will need to develop more part-time and contractual positions that suit older people.

‘Our company has been providing wealth advice to the south east Queensland region for many years – helping people grow, manage and protect their wealth’.

An ageing population will also spell public policy challenges. By 2047 there are forecast to be only about 2.4 working-age Australians for each retiree aged 65 and over.¶ The government will need to remove any benefit or pension disincentives that act as roadblocks to participation in the workforce, as well as reduce pressure on the public purse by lifting the pension age.

The goal – a comfortable and fulfilling retirement As we retire earlier and live longer, we will need a bigger retirement nest egg to keep pace with inflation and see us through. Planning is key. The earlier you start saving, the more likely you are to enjoy a comfortable and fulfilling retirement. Your future lifestyle depends on your financial decision today.

Living longer is set to change the way we work. We are more likely to move between jobs and opt

Good for your Hormones! Wearing a frock is

By Sam Beau Patrick

feeling” alive:

As I sit with my girlfriend recapping the fun we had at Melbourne Cup, it is clear the highlight for us was the “frock up”. The colour, the excitement, the horses and the fashions are what make horse racing an all-round wonderful experience that can leave you feeling high and happy.

Try to lead a more simple cleaner life. Get rid of toxic exposure in your life such as cleaning agents, foods laden with pesticides (i.e. eat organic) and hormone free meats.

Do you know what I am talking about? Do you experience the buzz and thrill of selecting a frock, then matching the earrings, necklace, shoes and head attire? Chances are, that if you are a woman and enjoy the races, the pre-track frivolities are as much fun as winning on a race. So why is this so? Sophia Loren once said “Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she is beautiful.” I believe dressing up in a frock gives a woman that belief. Hormonally, dressing in a frock will balance your female hormones and that is why it feels good. So many women today are adapting to the male working world and leaving their prettiness and femininity concealed. Some even throw it out, scared that it is a weakness. In my book, Beauty and the Beast Within, I discuss why getting in touch with your female side is just as important as being able to mix it with the boys. Australian women are the most fortunate in the world. We have been privileged to good schooling, safe communities, basic health and sexual equality. What we need to realise is that we need to rediscover boundaries before we go too far with the equality issue. OK, we can do what many men can do – we are independent, able to work and willing to tackle most things. But does that make for a happy relationship, a 64

Stress less. Choose activities and priorities in your day that are in line with what you want out of life (you may need to sit down and clarify what this is for you). happy family unit, and a happy you? In my Health Queen clinic, I manage women with all sorts of hormone issues, ranging from anger, depression and anxiety, through to obesity, infertility and hair in places that simply should not have hair. All of these changes are due to the fact that modern Australian women are increasing their male hormone levels, which is testosterone. Notice how many women speak gruffly and abruptly, how many yell and fire orders at their friends, partners and kids. Many women are so driven that their competitiveness is taken into the home life and many men are feeling redundant in the home. My research indicates that women are becoming men, socially and biologically. A good frock up can help minimise your risk! If you are worried that you may have a hormone imbalance, read my book, Beauty and the Beast Within (available as a book, eBook or audio and online via www.healthqueen.com.au). It will give you a greater understanding of the hormone endemic taking place. Once you recognise and acknowledge that you may be out of balance (in a recent study, 84% of women identified that they feel they have a hormone imbalance) you can move forward. These are four hot tips for keeping the “races

Eat well and exercise. Decrease starchy carbohydrates (as these increase insulin which in turn increase testosterone levels) and focus on eating a nice piece of meat/chicken/fish and organic salad and vegetables. Re-feminize. Get in touch with the girly side in you. Frock up, dress up and feel comfortable in your own beauty. You don’t need layers of makeup, if any. I usually only wear tinted lip gloss. Wear what you feel enhances your key aspects. But I know for some women, make up makes them feel sexy and attractive. Find the “right dose” of make up for you. Most of us love the “frock up” side of the racing calendar. And it is important as this allows you to be a glowing beautiful woman. Why not replicate this weekly. You might decide amongst your work friends to have a “hair ribbon day” or a hat day once a month. Why not make Friday a “frock up” day? This is something I am promoting to all women of Australia. Golf

A Ladies’ Game

If you’re looking for a new sport that combines light, cardiovascular fitness with a scenic and sociable environment, then maybe golf is exactly what you need. By Lia O’Reilly Birdee Golf Apparel Info@birdee.net.

Vanity Fairways www.vanityfairways.com.au

Golf may look like a lazy man’s (or woman’s game) however with such measurable health and wellness benefits, the sport is quickly becoming a favourite among women throughout Australia. On average you will walk around 4km in a round of golf. This burns 300 calories and is a great long term weight loss program that is easy to stick to, and won’t leave you stuck in a sweaty gym. Even if you chose to ride in a cart, you will still manage to burn around 230 calories. If you do opt to carry your own clubs, then you will be adding weightbearing exercise to your game. Weight bearing exercise three times per week is said to create long, lean muscle mass which supports a strong skeleton. This type of exercise can help prevent bone degeneration, including osteoporosis. Golf benefits more than just your fitness, with all that sunshine and fresh air offering an increased exposure to vitamin D, which is also essential for strong bones and ensures a better night’s sleep after a day on the course. One of the most valuable things golf can bring to your life is friends. Golf is a sociable game that allows old friends to catch up and new friendships

Start 2011 with a clean slate because when the heat strikes and we’re lightly dressed, our every beauty choice counts. Nothing says sparkle like gorgeously lustrous and healthy hair and a radiantly supple skin. It’s the perfect boost for confidence. Navigate parties and sizzling days, particularly when we’re on the course, by drinking plenty of water to cleanse the system and keep the skin and body hydrated. Up the intake during summer and get as much sleep as possible, it does wonders for the complexion. And, for health and beauty’s sake remember the skincare and anti-ageing staple, don’t go a day without sun protection. Now we can rise and shine and let our master list of winning combinations work their magic and get us through the season. The result, we’ll feel effortlessly glamorous, bright, breezy and radiantly fresh. By Wendy Ward After a day at the races, travelling or simply out and about, a quick spritz of the Pevonia Phyto-Aromatic Mist ($76 for 200ml) is an immediate pick me up for the complexion. Perfect anytime, particularly after flying when stale cabin air can leech every last drop of moisture from the skin, leaving it feeling dry and drab. Helping hydrate and cool, its deliciously scented and refreshing blend combines French Rose, Chamomile, Aloe and Calendula. Use to seal and achieve more from make up and, when back from the beach, a light spray (straight from the fridge) helps calm overheated skin and soothe. Salons and spas nationally + call 1800 069 116.

Over worked nails can benefit from the Revitanail Nail Strengthener ($29.95 for 30ml) to help reduce peeling, flaking and chipping. We may be able to skip foundation altogether with the Natio soft focus effect Mineral Pressed Powder ($19.95).
