e would like to welcome you to our ninth issue of Women in RACING Magazine. We present you with more stories than ever before on some outstanding women within this exciting industry. You may notice that we have reprinted an article “Understanding Racing across Australia” that was featured in our last issue. This is due to changes made by a previous Sub-editor that tended to confuse and misinform our readers. We hope you enjoy the new piece. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by the devastating floods and cyclones across Australia. Many racetracks were badly affected and it was a credit to the track organisers and officials who had to shuffle major raceday events. The 2011 BMW Magic Millions Race Day was held on January 15th by the Gold Coast Turf Club, after they had experienced extremely difficult conditions leading up to their big day. As all were well aware, a large area of Queensland was inundated with record rainfalls over December and January. The Gold Coast Turf Club recorded over 750mm of rain from December 1st, 2010 until January 14th ,2011. Despite all the previous rain, the BMW Magic Millions races were run and won and everyone was treated to a fantastic day of racing. In May, June and July, Queensland will showcase a great 2011 Winter Racing Carnival, featuring eight (8) Group 1 races, the Bundaberg Distilling Co BTC Cup on May 14th , followed by the Kirks Doomben Cup on May 21st , the Carlton Mid Doomben 10,000 on May 28th and the Treasury Casino Queensland Oaks on June 4th , the AAMI Stradbroke Handicap, the Channel Seven Queensland Derby and the Patinack Farm T.J. Smith on June 11th .The Group 1 extravaganza will conclude with the running of the Tattersall’s Racing Club Winter Stakes on June 25th . In addition there will a further thirty one (31) Stakes races held over that period on the Eagle
Farm and Doomben Racecourses. Channel 7 Brisbane will televise live all meetings from May 14th to June 11th in addition to the services provided by the Foxtel Channels, Sky and TVN. The Gold Coast Turf Club will feature the running of the Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes and the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas supported by four (4) other Stakes races on May 7th . Ipswich comes alive in June with the Ipswich Turf Club hosting three (3) Listed races including the Channel 7 Ipswich Cup and the City of Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes races on June 18th. Last but not least, the Sunshine Coast Turf Club’s Corbould Park Racecourse, located just an hour north of Brisbane, will have three (3) Listed races including the XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas and the Caloundra Cup on July 2nd . There are no races in Brisbane on these days and these meetings are classified as metropolitan meetings. The 2011 Queensland Winter Racing Carnival will conclude with a meeting at Eagle Farm on July 9th . Jumps racing, which was given a new lease of life this year in Victoria and South Australia, commenced in early April. The iconic Oakbank Racing Club were conducting “The “World’s Biggest Picnic Race Meetings” over the Easter weekend with the Scott Group of Companies Von Doussa Steeplechase being run on the Saturday and the Yalumba Classic Hurdle and the Scott Group of Companies Great Eastern Steeplechase being run on the Monday, when this issue is at the Printers. The historic Warrnambool Racing Club’s Carnival runs over three days from Tuesday May 3rd, concluding on Thursday May 5th , featuring the Brierly Steeple on Tuesday, the Galleywood Hurdle on Wednesday and the Grand Annual Steeple on Thursday. Read more about the Carnival on page 57. Mornington Racing Club will host their Great Southern Steeple on Sunday
May 22nd and the Bendigo Jockey Club will feature the Moss Trooper Steeple on Sunday June 19th . The full 2011 Victorian Jumps Racing Program is on page 28, including the dates for the Australian Hurdle and Steeple and the Grand National Hurdle and Steeple which will all be run at Betfair Park, Sandown. The World’s highest rated horse, the Champion Mare, Black Caviar remained undefeated after winning the Group 1 $500,000 Pulse Pharmacy William Reid Stakes at the Moonee Valley Night Meeting on Friday March 25th . Trainer Peter Moody then took her Interstate for the first time and she thrilled the Sydney public at Royal Randwick’s Derby Day meeting when she celebrated her 12th win from as many starts in the Group 1 Darley T.J. Smith Stakes on Saturday April 9th. Previous to her win at Moonee Valley, Black Caviar was the star of the 2011 Melbourne Festival of Racing winning the Group 1 Lexus Newmarket Handicap at Flemington carrying a record weight for a Mare. Charity Race Day
St Vincent’s Brisbane will be holding their annual Mt Olivet Charity Race Day again this year, to assist in the Hospital’s fundraising efforts. In past years, the support the Hospital has received has enabled the fundraising committee to purchase numerous items of Medical Equipment. The event has been a great networking oppor tunity and is a day for the hospital show to their deepest appreciation for the continuing support of the public and sponsorship. The Race Day will be held at Eagle Farm Racecourse from 12.30pm on Wednesday July 20th, 2011. Dear Cathi, Congratulations on such a fantastic magazine. I recently became a subscriber with my friend Jill (Theseo owner), after she gave me the Summer/Autumn copy of your fabulous magazine, collected from the Qantas Lounge. WOW! What a great read. It kept me entertained for the flight and more. I kept it as a reference - so many interesting articles and great photos (and stores and spas I'd love to visit!) Surprisingly, I too was in Melbourne for Derby Day, Melbourne Cup and Oaks Day and also at Guy Rossi's Florentino for The Cup Eve Lunch. Now I know what you look like - will be able to say hi! Just a short note to thank you for the two tickets to Pink Slipper Day at Rosehill. My daughter Rachael and I attended and had a wonderful time, despite the inclement weather. The venue was excellent and worked well, especially considering it was such a large room. The Pink Ladies did a lovely job decorating the room with pink roses, chair covers in different shades of pink, and the table decorations were outstanding. My daughter and I sat at a table with a group from the media who were great company and the food was just delightful. Entertainment was provided by Stan Walker, a contestant from Australian Idol. I confess I was really surprised at just how good Stan was as a live performer. It only took him two songs to get most of the women in the room up and dancing. Even though we didn't back a winner all day, we had a great time and Rachael, who'd never seen a live horse race before, was really impressed and is keen to go again, especially if she can get all dressed up and wear a fancy hat. I would highly recommend getting a group of friends together and making a day of it at the races. If you can do so and support such a worthy cause as the Glenn McGrath foundation at the same time, then even better. Again, thank you and the magazine for such a great day out.

he Racing Industry makes an enormous contribution to the Australian economy. On the Gold Coast, the most significant contribution from racing to our economy is through hosting the Magic Millions Carnival each January.

The Magic Millions is the biggest race day on the Queensland thoroughbred racing calendar with more than 15,000 attending the event in 2011.

This year the Carnival took place between the 7th and the 19th of January - 12 days of glamour, fashion and racing. Once again, it brought together racing royalty, celebrities, punters, fashion enthusiasts and people from all walks of life. Attendees included locals, visitors from intrastate, interstate and many overseas locations throughout Asia, New Zealand, Europe and the United Arab Emirates. Most importantly for our tourism industry, visitors attracted by the carnival often stay for an extended period and visit the many attractions the Gold Coast has to offer as well as experiencing our shopping and Restaurants. Our tourism industry is dependant on longerstay visitors and the Magic Millions is an event that delivers precisely that result. An economic impact study into the 2008 Magic Millions event demonstrated a direct contribution of $24.6 million to the Gold Coast economy and an additional $27.3 million of value in publicity to give a total economic benefit of $52 million. Direct economic contribution is through tourism, accommodation, hospitality and transport. Further, the fabulous shoes, hats, fascinators, dresses and suits found track-side demonstrates the significant
contribution racing makes to the fashion industry. ‘Fashions on the Field’ is hotly contested both at the Gold Coast Turf Club and at the many off-track events organised as part of the Carnival, such as the Women in Racing Luncheon, which is an event that you ‘must’ be seen at. This January, the world renowned Magic Millions Auctions generated more than $70 million in yearling sales. Whilst the $2 million 2YO classic is the highlight of race day, only horses purchased from Magic Millions are able to compete meaning owners and trainers are almost guaranteed to return to the city. While it was predicted that wet weather on the Gold Coast and more broadly the flooding in south-east Queensland could result in lower attendances this year, this turned out not to be the case. An additional 1,000 people were attracted to the event in comparison to the 2010 figures. Given the Magic Millions is such a significant contributor to the Gold Coast economy it is important to ensure that necessary structures are in place. In January 2010, the Bligh Labor Government announced an $80 million package for the three racing codes: Thoroughbred, Harness and Greyhound Racing. To date that money has not materialised. For a world class event such as the Magic Millions the facilities at the Gold Coast Turf Club require an upgrade and this should be delivered immediately. The racing industry is a vital part of Queensland’s economic sustainability and should be recognised as such. ■

hen I ask people who owns Woolworths, Telstra, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) and BHP, most people don’t know. They know these companies are listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, but they don’t understand that they are owned by the public. If you buy CBA shares, you are literally a part-owner of the CBA. Australian companies, like the Commonwealth Bank, generate revenue by trading or selling goods or services to consumers. The expenses of running a company (eg. salary, wages and rent) are paid out of revenue and the profit is then taxed at the Australian company tax rate, which is currently 30%. A portion of the net profit is often retained by the company to grow the business and the balance of the profit is paid to the owners – that is, to the shareholders. With large, well established profitable ’blue-chip’ Australian companies, this distribution of company profits to shareholders generally occurs on a six monthly basis via the payment of interim and final dividends. Share market enthusiasts understand that
dividends from a diversified portfolio of good quality companies can be a very steady, predictable and consistent form of income (regardless of volatile share prices). For example, a well constructed $500,000 share portfolio can consistently generate income (dividends) of 4 to 5 percent per annum ($20,000 to $25,000 per annum); which is similar to the rental income you would received from a $500,000 residential investment property; or the interest income you would receive from a $500,000 bank deposit.
(because the franking credits are a tax credit that off-set tax payable); whereas you would pay $6,000 tax on your $20,000 rent or interest (excluding Medicare levy).
The difference between $20,000 of dividends and $20,000 of rent or bank interest is that the dividends can carry up to approximately $8,500 worth of ‘franking credits’ with them.

pswich Racing comes alive in Winter with the Ipswich Racing Carnival concluding with the running of the famous Ipswich Cup on June 18th 2011. The Ipswich Cup continues to be seen as the social experience and party day of the year for the people of Ipswich and it’s surrounds and the myriad of visitors who attend the Carnival far and wide. Fashions, music, colourful characters and superb racing all come together on this big day. The day has grown to become one of the largest Provincial Club meetings in Australia

and has topped the thoroughbred race meeting attendance figures in Queensland for the past couple of seasons. The marquee experience on Ipswich Cup Day is unlike any other and again will see thousands flock to the Bundamba racecourse for a fun filled afternoon on all of the days of the Carnival.

This event attracts high quality athletes from all over Queensland and other States in search of the good prize money on offer. The St Edmund’s Foundation function also ensures a big day is in store. The three year old distance race on this day as a lead up to the running of the Queensland Derby was a big success in 2010. Friday May 13th is Fashion and Funk Day. This is the first race meeting to be held on the Ipswich Show Holiday for many years. This day focuses on glamorous fashion, beauty and music. It will be a day full of fashion parades, hair & make-up pamper stations, “Fashions on the Field Competitions” and music provided by live DJ’s. Friday May 20th is the second Apprenticeships Queensland Tradesmen’s Expo Day. A large attendance at the inaugural 2010 Tradesmen’s Day ensured that this day continued for a second year. change of Government at the last State Election, followed by decisions announced by the new Minister for Racing, Dr. Denis Napthine, was cause for renewed enthusiasm in the jumping fraternity, particularly to the thousands of people employed in the industry. Dr. Napthine who is a Veterinarian, was pleased to advise Racing Victoria CEO, Rob Hines, that the Liberal Government had pledged that it would put $ 500.000 into jumps racing until 2016. Jumps trainers could now confidently advise prospective owners that investing in jumpers was a worthwhile consideration. The program has been developed following

As a result, no jumps races will be held on the same day in both states, thus allowing for increased cross-state participation by jockeys and trainers.“We are pleased to welcome Bendigo and Mornington back as jumps racing venues, whilst consolidating Warrnambool and Betfair Park as the premier jumps racing venues in the state. “The new look racing program will be supported by an enhanced trialling and schooling schedule that commenced at the start of February and provide increased opportunities for trainers to educate and prepare their jumpers for competition.” ■

egrettably, we are unable to give the meeting the coverage which it deserves due to Easter falling so late in April this year. The meeting, run by the iconic Oakbank Racing Club in the Adelaide Hills (which has been racing since 1876) held a great weekend of racing on the 23rd and 25th of April. For the first time since Anzac Day’s inception it aligned with Easter Monday, which allowed the Club to honour our Anzac heroes at this year’s Carnival. Oakbank Racing Club Chairman John Glatz said before the day, ”we’re especially excited about this Easter as having Anzac Day on Easter Monday will add an extra significance to our event. We will be able to race before midday with special permission from the RSL and we will honour our brave diggers with a Last Post before we commence the day”. Oakbank Racing Club offered free admission on Easter Monday to financial members of the RSL (on presentation of their membership), as well as free admission to members of the 16AD Regiment from Woodside.

the World's Biggest picnic race meeting Crowds of 100,000+ were estimated over the two race days and children and the young at heart enjoyed the showground style rides and amusements as well as face painting, roving entertainers and the petting zoo trackside. The Australian Girls Choir heralded in the Scott Group of Companies Great Eastern Steeplechase on the Monday with a fantastic rendition of our National Anthem. Oakbank 2011 Ambassadors Emma Charlton and Sophie Edington joined in the action trackside. A Loxton born Australian Swimming Champion, Sophie has just completed the Australian National Swimming in Sydney, winning a silver and two bronze medals. Sophie said before the day, “I am looking forward to returning to my home town in South Australia and celebrating Easter in the stunning Adelaide
Hills. Oakbank is something that’s unique in the world and I can’t wait to be part of it, helping the Club support the Little Heroes Foundation in their fantastic work with children with Cancer and serious illnesses”. Chris McDermott, ex Adelaide Crows Captain is the Executive Director and Chairman of Little Heroes Foundation. Chris said, “the children our foundation supports will benefit from the funds raised at Oakbank this year. We’ve nearly achieved our goal to be able to buy a second MRI machine for the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and the support of the thousands of people who attend Oakbank will be invaluable in reaching this milestone. hat a great time it is for racing with the mighty Black Caviar heading to Brisbane’s Winter Carnival. This particular Woman in Racing has been rated the best racehorse in the world and I have to say it is an absolute privilege to watch her every time she goes around. Of course Black Caviar has the BTC Cup in her Itinerary at this stage and I urge all of you that can get there to do so and see this magnificent sprinter. What could be better than dressing up and stepping out to see what just may be the best horse to ever grace our shores? The BTC Cup has thrown up some upsets over the years with Bentley Biscuit upsetting Takeover Target in 2007 and of course Albert The Fat proving too strong for the likes of Melito and Ortensia last year. While this race hasn’t been a great one for the girls you can be sure that if Black Caviar gets beaten the winner will pay monster odds. The mare is then tipped to go on to the Doomben 10,000 where she’ll be tested over a trip of 1350 metres for the first time. The 10,000 already has an honour roll of great champions – Campaign King, Chief De Beers, Apache Cat and Takeover Target, to name just a few and Black Caviar gives every impression

ost of us don’t have a clue what our life passion is before the age of ten, but for Caroline Searcy it was obvious. Raised in Adelaide and with no major racing influence in her early life, Caroline became enamoured with thoroughbred racing after watching ‘World of Sport Racetrack’ on channel 7. Caroline’s passion for racing quickly grew and before long she was riding her bike of a Saturday to watch the races at Victoria Park. She was completely captivated by the horses and the excitement of the track. For Caroline, the figure who changed her life the most wasn’t a parent, teacher or mentor… it was a thoroughbred horse and winner of the 1982 Blue Diamond: Rancher.

Caroline Searcy is the beloved host of TVN’s ‘Thoroughbreds’ program as well as co-host of Weekend Racing in Sydney with Richard Callendar and presenter of yearling sales and major carnivals across Australia. With a passion for racing spanning almost 30 years, we found out more about the woman that we see on our TV screens. 34 | www.womeninracingmagazine.com.au
“I had heard a few of his races on the radio that he won by a street, and then I made a point of watching the Blue Diamond,” she tells us. “It was his eighth straight win as a 2yo”. Caroline; along with much of the country; was inspired by the majestic thoroughbred. Rancher’s win opened a whole new world for the young girl who started following the industry with even more passion, becoming more and more fascinated with the media coverage of race meetings. “The early 80’s was a marvellous time to fall in love with the sport,” she recalls, “with so many great champions winning so consistently”. Caroline kept a scrapbook, and many videos of their races and trackwork for several years, following the careers of all of her favourite thoroughbreds including Rancher, Manikato, Kingston Town and Rose of Kingston. At the age of 12 her media career had already begun. Skip ahead around 30 years and Caroline is still just as wide-eyed and passionate about the racing industry. What is most striking about her is not only the dedication she demonstrated so early in her life, but also the way she seems to have been able to hold on to this core passion for the horses
themselves – an element that is sometimes overshadowed among the wagering, social events and prize money that is so often the main focus in today’s industry. Despite her constant love of racing, Caroline’s early career took her around the country and into various radio newsrooms. After an impromptu script reading at a public radio conference in South Australia caught the attention of Austereo’s national News Director John Williams, Caroline was given the job as news producer and newsreader at Darwin’s Hot 100FM, followed by a stint in Canberra in TV and radio, before settling in to her role at Fox Sports for 11 years as a presenter and senior news reporter. Caroline admittedly loves most sports and although her role at Fox allowed her to work with all varieties of sport, it was difficult to film racing stories given her obligations as a news presenter and producer. “In the mid 90’s I was able to do many feature stories about the likes of Saintly and
Octagonal,” she recalls, “but as the years went on I became more and more studio based, which became very frustrating. It was time to focus on my one passion, and that was racing!” Channel 9’s Gary Burns was instrumental in bringing Caroline to TVN, and today Caroline has the opportunity to work alongside and mingle with the who’s who of the industry. Interviews with trainers, owners and breeders are a daily occurrence for the journalist, and Caroline has recently moved in to the ownership side of the industry herself. For Caroline, sentiment is extremely important when it comes to choosing a horse to support or follow. Sentiment took a further role in 2007 when she took her first step in to ownership, buying a quarter share with friends in a Thorn Park filly named Rose Among Thorns at the Inglis Classic sale. The filly was the granddaughter of Bank Burst, a horse that she particularly loved in her childhood. Although the pretty filly never raced, Caroline kept her for as long as possible to ride, until a shoulder injury prevented
even that. Rose Among Thorns is now in foal to Prince Arthur and Caroline plans to race the foal with friends. “You never, never know what can happen in racing!” It is this same passion for horses that Caroline sees as the key to the future of racing. She lists countries such as England and Ireland where the interest in the thoroughbred horse makes the racing and the horse the spectacle. “It’s not just for the punt, in those countries they really relish the theatre, competition, the trainer and the jockeys and I think Australia could focus much more on their marketing efforts to attract more people to appreciate the actual horses”. “We need people to follow a thoroughbred from start to finish – that is where the real passion is”, she states, suggesting it is the brilliant animals as opposed to the wagering and the social drawcard that really bring people to the sport. “ “Rancher won the Blue Diamond in the early 80’s and really inspired me, today the same thing is happening now with Black Caviar – People are being inspired!” ■ Women in RACING | 35

n Saturday, April 2nd, a huge crowd of 26.604 were brought together by the Australian Turf Club for a great day’s racing in a sunny Sydney day. The racing highlight of the day was the crowd witnessed for just the fifth time since the initial running of the race in 1957, a horse completing the Caulfield Blue Diamond/Rosehill Gardens Golden Slipper Double. It was achieved by the 2yo chestnut colt Sepoy, who won with two outstanding fillies Mosheen and Elite Falls running 2nd and 3rd. Sepoy is owned Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, trained by Peter Snowden and was ridden by Kerrin McEvoy. The other highlight of the day was the array of the most beautiful women who attended Rosehill Gardens to compete in this year's Myer ‘Fashions on the Field’ where the winner, Kelli Odell (# 25) went home with $80,000 worth of prizes. The final 10 were dominant in red and the ‘50s is still a look highly sort after look.

One of the glamour events leading into the Golden Slipper Carnival was the Golden Slipper Hats & Tea, held in conjunction with the NSW Racehorse Owners Association and Sharon Lenton Events.

he room was filled with beautifully dressed women ensuring that the Most Elegant Woman was going to be a difficult decision for the judges. The title was won by Katie Brand, whose pale pink satin vintage dress with jacket was well co-ordinated, complimented by patent pale pink shoes, matching bag and leather gloves. Katie adorned this number with a head piece from Kim Fletcher that could "stop traffic". First runner up was Marlia Saunders in a silk black floral dress with a strong blue tone lifting her outfit and the second runner up went to Christine Mathers in a Armani steel grey/blue suit complimented perfectly by a soft blue structured fedora style hat. Best millinery award went to Kim Norton with a Lindsay Clare black wired intricate creation with black felt flowers encased at the back of the head. First runner up was Philomena Kwok (black leather) and second runner up went to Shirley Mcgrath (red feathers). On entrance to the room for lunch, our models were adorned in corsetry by Jessica Turner Designs and following the theme of the event, many of the attendees wore masks.
The fashion parade was barely over before there was an influx of women trying on the millinery pieces. A sea of hat boxes were at most tables, while the women sipping on champagne seemed extremely happy with their new purchases. Not only were the women able to buy head pieces, but they were showcased equine jewellery from EJ & Co whose product is endorsed by Princess Natalie of Denmark, Prince Frederick's first cousin. The next Exhibitor, Hat Box Sundae, had never before seen leather ‘hat box luggage’ covered in crystals, ribbons and studs, a MUST when travelling interstate to your next racing carnival. The day was a huge success with prizes being won and racing games to keep everyone on their toes. Thank you to all the women whose enthusiasm shone throughout the whole day. This event is a must when next held in the Spring Carnival. ■
As lunch was being served we were entertained royally by Kathrine Taliana. Her amazing voice captured the rooms attention immediately, before the models took to the floor showing the latest fashions designed by Perri Cutten for the Autumn Carnival. erby Day patrons at Royal Randwick on April 9th, were presented with a great start to their Autumn Carnival with the large crowd in excess of 30,000 in attendance enjoying a fabulous day of world class racing. The females were to the fore throughout the day, with three fillies and three mares winning six of the nine races, with the stars being Black Caviar and Shamrocker, both winning Group 1 races, Once Were Wild and Hurtle Myrtle winning Group 2’s and Anise and Crafty Irna saluting in Group 3’s. All their owners would have been very pleased as their respective stud values would have risen appreciably. In addition, Australia’s first lady of racing, Gai Waterhouse was not to be left out of the action, training a running double. The highlight of the day however was the win of the World’s highest rated horse, the 4yo mare Black Caviar, who continued on her winning way with her 12th win from as many races. She now has returned her Owners prize money of over $ 3.2 million, from an initial outlay of $ 210,000. Racing the Sydney way for the first time was a new challenge for Black Caviar, her trainer Peter Moody and jockey Luke Nolen, but

they all played their part extremely well, Black Caviar making up many lengths on Hay List in the straight to win the Darley sponsored T.J. Smith Stakes run over 1200m by 2 3/4 lengths from the 5yo gelding with the 6yo gelding Triple Honour a further 5 lengths astern in a blanket finish for 3rd. Black Caviar ran a race record of 1.08.71 on a Dead (4) track and surely would have broken the course record of 1.08.32 on a good surface. Black Caviar’s trainer, Peter Moody now has new challenges ahead in placing Black Caviar in a position to equal or eclipse long held records of some of the greats of Australian racing. Black Caviar is already the first horse to win its first 12 races, the first mare to win 5 Group 1’s in succession, she has equalled Kingston Town’s 11 consecutive Stakes wins and Tulloch’s 12 consecutive wins. She is now after wins in succession records set by some of the Icons of the turf in Phar Lap (14), Carbine and Bernborough (15), Ajax (18) and Gloaming (19). Multiple wins in succession by horses Overseas include Silent Witness (Hong Kong 17), Cigar, Citation and Hallowed Dreams ( USA 16) and Ribot (France 16). This makes Black Caviar very special and when she’s at the end of her racing career, she may have set records for mares or even all horses that may never be achieved again. The win of Black Caviar meant a lot to Peter Moody. It was the legendary T.J. (Tommy) Smith who gave Peter his first opportunity to work in his stable when he arrived in Sydney from Queensland. Peter refers to T.J. as ‘The Little General’ affectionately and attributes his current work ethic with lessons he learnt from the master trainer. If Black Caviar does go to Brisbane for the Brisbane Racing Club’s Winter Carnival, the people from all over Queensland are sure to give one of their best ever exports a hero’s welcome and help fill Eagle Farm
and Doomben racecourse’s to capacity. Two races later, another emerging female, the 3yo filly Shamrocker, brilliantly won the David Jones sponsored AJC Australian Derby. This win again was very significant as it was the 150th running of the time honoured Australian Derby and Shamrocker was only the fourth filly to win the Classic in the last 33 years since the race was switched from Spring to Autumn and she was also the only filly in this year’s race. Shamrocker won going away from Retrieve by 1½ lengths with a further 3 lengths to the 3rd placegetter Anacheeva. As we were going to press before the running of the Patinack Farm AJC Oaks on Saturday 16th April, we can only assume that trainer Danny O’Brien will back up Shamrocker, hoping to reverse the placings in the 2010 Crown Victoria Oaks last November when she was a fast finishing 2nd to Brazilian Pulse. Shamrocker won the Group 1 Australian Guineas over 1600m at just her 2nd start this preparation and then ran a very good 3rd to Jimmy Choux in the Rosehill Guineas over 2000m to give her the extra fitness to run a strong 2400m, the distance of the Derby and the Oaks. Her trainer, Danny O’Brien said “She has taken on the boys all her life and more than held her own”. Shamrocker made history in the Derby as she is the only filly to win the Australian Guineas and the Australian Derby. Shamrocker was bought for the now bargain price of $ 65,000 and has returned in excess of $ 1.8 million in prize money for her owners. O’Brien and jockey Glen Boss both believe that Shamrocker will become stronger as a four and five year old and she is sure to be high in the markets for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in this year’s Victorian Spring Carnival. However, O’Brien said that his Immediate focus was to have Shamrocker fit and in good order for the Group 1 AJC Australian Oaks. ■ Women in RACING | 41

hile the main attention of Derby day involved the horses, we also had the David Jones ‘Fashions on the Field’ competition with the winner receiving over $21,000. The final ten were chosen by the panel of judges who had a great eye for fashion and were faced with a difficult task, with Sydney’s most elegant ladies being in attendance. The barrier draw for the Group 1 BMW, Sydney’s premier weight for age event, was conducted by the NSW Racehorse Owners Association in conjunction with Sharon Lenton Events at Bar 333 on Tuesday 29 March 2011. Present were members of the new Australian Turf Club (ATC) Board headed by the Chairman, John Cornish and CEO, Darren Pearce. Racehorse owners and guests mingled with the ‘Tooheys girls’ and formalities were conducted by Jo McKinnon from Sky Channel. Under the careful eye of Chief Racing Steward, Ray Murrihy and Marc Van Gestel, the barrier draw obtained excitement when favourite Maluckyday (NZ) drew the coveted rails barrier.

This was not always the most efficient means Williams points out, potential employers were limited in their choices as qualified horse staff do not always hear of the opportunities out there, nor do the industry people from overseas or those recently qualified who are new to the industry.
I
t was while nursing a broken wrist that threatened to destroy his career as a jumps jockey, that Bill Williams nurtured the idea of an employment Internet site, specifically geared towards the equine industry – “Seek for horse people.” He was recovering from the gruelling ordeal of three operations on his wrist when he had the idea. While dealing with the possibility that he would lose the use of his right hand, such was the extent of the nerve damage, Williams had time to do a significant amount of thinking on the concept and as a consequence, EQUUS CONNECT was born. Working on the site since the middle of 2008, Williams has seen EQUUS CONNECT grow, and not just steadily, but quickly. “We have gone from nobodies to number one in a short space of time”, he said, adding that the most commonly used search engines such as Google recognise EQUUS CONNECT as the leading site of its type. Enthusiastic about EQUUS CONNECT’s role in the horse industry, Williams saw a void that needed to be filled. “The number

For a very reasonable fee, employers can promote their positions to a rapidly increasing list of registered horse job seekers. Currently there are over 10,000 active users with between 400 and 500 joining each month. The employer has complete control of their own recruitment campaign. They are able to design and write their own advertisements, (unless help is required which the independent EQUUS Connect is happy to provide). There is no gobetween, the employer is contacted directly by the job seeker, therefore no commissions or placement fees. “We have the equine industry’s good at heart,” he said. The horse job seeker is well served by EQUUS CONNECT, he or she is able, without charge, to list in detail their skills and experience. Their CV and photos can be uploaded and they have
the choice to include their name, or to have their details remain confidential. Williams is just the right person to run such a site, being a part of the horse industry for so long, an industry that prides itself on being one of Australia’s most prolific employers. Born to a horse family with an involvement in horse racing, polo and hunting, Williams had exposure to some pretty nice horses (talented sprinting mare Sweet Chariot and classy jumper Manunda were two trained by his mother Frances Nelson), but it was not until he completed his studies that he saw riding as a profession. Riding for major trainers in Ireland and the UK (Lord Huntingdon at the Queen’s Stables), Williams made the move to Melbourne in 2001, winning most of the majors including his two favourites, the Grand Annual aboard Sir Pentire in 2009 and the Grand National on Busby Glenn in 2006. Riding track work for Michael Moroney, Danny O’Brien and Graeme Rogerson, Williams has many friends in horse racing and his love of the sport shines through. “The horse industry is a great one to work in”, he said. “Fantastic people and such a variety of opportunities, there are just so many horse jobs out there, farriers, veterinarians, stud workers, grooms, strappers, administrators, bookmakers, clerks, feed merchants, journalists, trainers, jockeys, track riders, the list just goes on and on”. The Australian Turf Club The Australian Turf Club officially started operating on Monday, 7th February, 2011. NSW Gaming and Racing Minister Kevin Greene said “The merger process between the Sydney Turf Club and the Australian Jockey Club has now been finalised. The creation of the Australian Turf Club Limited, NSW's new major racing club, is one of the most significant developments in the history of NSW racing. Finally, NSW has a strong and united metropolitan club to take the industry forward, to capitalise on opportunities for growth and development. We have completed an essential step to secure the ongoing viability of NSW racing."

The people’s champion extended her winning streak to 11 when she overcame a wide run throughout much of the race to score by almost two lengths at the prohibitive odds of $1.09. The victory took Trainer Peter Moody and Jockey Luke Nolen’s earnings for the night racing season past $1 million, delivering them lucrative prizes thanks to Moonee Valley’s Industry Rewards Program. Moody took ownership of a $134,000 Mercedes-Benz GL-350 as a reward for his stunning season under lights, whilst Nolen walked away with a $33,000 Bang & Olufsen BeoVision television. “What do you say? She’s just gone and done the job again, full credit to her, it’s hard to take credit for any part of it. She’s just a machine”, an awestruck Moody declared. “It’s just great to be a part of something that’s a great draw card for racing”. Nolen was also in awe of the four-year-old mare who won her fourth consecutive Group 1 race and took her career earnings to $2.6 million with the feature race triumph. “I don’t know how many people are here tonight but they were all here to see one horse and it was good she didn’t let anyone down. La Bella Roo and Black Caviar share the same crack sire, Bel Esprit. La Bella Roo’s trainer Peter Boynton from Bendigo picked up a new Mazda CX9 when his stable star recorded the quickest time of 55.48 seconds in the Challenge held over 18 heats during the Moonee Valley Night Racing Season. The Mazda CX9 is worth $55,000. Jockey Jake Noonan collected $10,000 thanks to Essendon Mazda for his winning ride on La Bella Roo.
Glamour Meets Group Racing At The Valley Friday Night racing at Moonee Valley on March 18th was an extravaganza of fillies and fashion, featuring the Group 2 Top Cut Alister Clark Stakes and the heats of the Miss Universe Australia competition. The night featured the preliminary heats of the Miss Universe Australia competition, with current Miss Universe Australia Jesinta Campbell leading the judging panel for the 2011 Miss Universe Australia competition. The heats ran through the evening with the winners announced at the conclusion of the night. Alongside Jesinta Campbell on the judging panel was Fashion Stylist Rebecca Williams, Media personality and Sports Manager Rick Olarenshaw and Miss Universe Australia Director, Deborah Miller who make this final decision on who will be the girls to go through to the Victorian State Final. The judging panel selected 9 girls from the group to progress through to the State Final. ■

Not only was Hidden Loot her first ride in a race, but also her career first winner. Over the past two years Catherine has ridden in a total of 25 official barrier trials at the Central and Western Area tracks to qualify for her ticket to compete at professional meetings. ith the Melbourne Festival of Racing behind us and the Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival appearing ever so faintly on the horizon, fashion and entertainment takes a well earned sabbatical, but only for a few months, while the focus turns to the race track for a frantic winter of racing at the Melbourne Racing Club.

In addition, the Club will host 21 race meetings across its three venues (Caulfield, Betfair Park Sandown and Mornington) during May, June and July with the highlights being Monash Stakes Day and Bletchingly Stakes Day at Caulfield in July to conclude another outstanding racing season. It was a season to cherish which saw Racing’s First Lady, Gai Waterhouse, capture two feature Group One wins at Caulfield, including her first BMW Caulfield Cup with Descarado during the Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival in October. Caulfield, the headquarters of racing for the Melbourne Racing Club, will play host to four meetings until July while Betfair Park Sandown has twelve and the Club’s new course, Mornington, will host five meetings.

The Melbourne Racing Club and the Mornington Racing Club merged at the commencement of the 2010/11 season and as a result, the Club now conducts 82 meetings throughout the season. The fashion and entertainment programme during the BMW Caulfield Cup Carnival again showcased all that the spring fashion had to offer throughout the carnival, but now racegoers must reacquaint themselves with their winter wardrobe and enjoy the plethora of racing action over the coming months. Signature jumps races that were previously run at both Flemington and Moonee Valley now adorn the Betfair Park Sandown annual race programme. The Grand National Hurdle and Grand National Steeplechase along with the Crisp Steeplechase now join the Melbourne Racing Club’s already established feature jumps races such as the Australian Hurdle and Australian Steeplechase to create a series of races that now boasts over $1 million in prize money. The jumps racing programme at Betfair Park Sandown compliments the world-famous Warrnambool May Carnival, where many of Australia’s flagship jumps races are held – namely the Galleywood Hurdle (3200 metres), the Brierly Steeplechase
(3450 metres) and the ultimate test of both jockey and horse in the Grand Annual Steeplechase over 5500 metres. Betfair Park Sandown is a course for all seasons. During the seasons of summer and spring, the vast expanses of lawn adjacent to the track is the ideal ‘pozzie’ to watch the races from, while in the cooler months, the grandstand boasts restaurants, bars and seating both under cover or indoors to enable a day at the races to be enjoyed in all conditions. Whilst on the topic of great ‘pozzies’ to watch the races from, there are few better than the Mornington Racecourse.

hile the Victoria Racing Club’s Melbourne Cup Carnival in Spring undoubtedly consumes Melburnians like no other sporting event, it is in the summer and autumn when racing purists get their true fix. Racing fans - who were spoilt with no fewer than three Group 1 Flemington racedays during the festival - know much more about the stars of the turf in the second half of the racing season than they do in the spring. The star of the 2011 Melbourne Festival of Racing at Flemington - long considered by those in the know to offer some of the most scintillating racing on the Australian calendar - was the peerless super-mare, Black Caviar. Black Caviar, officially rated the world’s best racehorse for her romping Lexus Newmarket Handicap victory, looks to be as bright a star as Australian racing has ever seen.

There were Three Festive Race Days Coolmore Lightning Stakes Day The revamped festival format broke out of the barriers with the Coolmore Lightning Stakes Day on February 19th , which saw the return to racing of the then newlycrowned Champion Sprinter of the World, the undefeated Mare Black Caviar. Black Caviar had not raced since her commanding win in the Patinack Farm Classic on Emirates Stakes Day last November. The Peter Moody trained mare warranted her short odds, with an effortless victory in the first leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, an annual globe-trotting series featuring the world’s fastest thoroughbreds. In what was a very special moment in the sport of kings, Black Caviar duly saluted in the Group 1 weight-for-age sprinting showdown over 1000m, showing contempt for the strong field that included the hulking

Hay List. Moody was justifiably full of praise for his powerhouse stable’s marquee horse after the demoralising win. “I'm very proud to be a part of what's probably our ambassador for racing here in Australia at the moment in Black Caviar. It's exciting. I'm lost for words. I don't know what to say, she's just one hell of a horse”, said Moody. Premier jockey and Moody stable rider Luke Nolen appeared to have to do very little for his first Group 1 win on Black Caviar, nonchalantly streaking ahead of the bustling field with about 400 metres to go before easing up in the final furlong. “It's a pretty hard feeling to describe; it seems you've got an endless reserve to bank on”, remarked Nolen. Hay List finished three lengths in arrears despite a strong run, ensuring Black Caviar’s entitlement to the crown of the world’s fastest horse, with Warm Love a gallant third. Black Caviar equalled a 131-year-old record
when she stretched her unbeaten streak to nine, a feat first achieved on city tracks by 1880 Melbourne Cup winner Grand Flaneur. Pre-race discussion centred upon whether Black Caviar would break Special’s 23-year-old track record of 55.5sec for the 1000-metre straight track. It wasn’t to be with a stiff headwind and Nolen’s decision to ease the $1.30 favourite right down resulting in a winning time of 57.2sec. One lucky racegoer took home $2,000 cash, $250 worth of black caviar and $250 worth of G.H.Mumm champagne for guessing the correct time Black Caviar covered the 1000m, as part of a VRC promotion. The Coolmore Lightning Stakes has become a springboard for international success with recent previous winners Choisir, Takeover Target, Miss Andretti and Scenic Blast going on to compete at Royal Ascot. But it was the longshot of the trio, Shamrocker, who proved triumphant at odds of $31 in the hands of three-time Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss. The win was a bonus for Boss who was eager to ride the Mike Moroney trained Absolutelyawesome, but that horse was named fourth emergency and failed to gain a start. Despite her long odds, Boss was confident of victory a long way from home and when a gap emerged in the straight his filly rocketed through to defeat Bullbars ($9) by one-and-threequarter lengths, with Western Australian colt Playing God ($5) three-quartersof-a-length further back in third. 58 | www.womeninracingmagazine.com.au
"She felt like the winner from about the halfmile mark", Boss declared. "I had Brett (Prebble) on the favourite (Playing God) outside me and it looked like he was in a bit of strife, the horse was over-racing and not travelling as well as he should have, but my filly was just smoking. I couldn’t believe how well she was travelling when she towed me through. My only concern was that as she was second-up, I may have got there too soon, but I had to take the run when it presented itself".

The victory was also a bonus for the connections of the New Zealand-bred filly whose primary aim this campaign had always been the Group 1 AJC Oaks in Sydney. "We had her pretty right for the mile here today. She was a bit underdone firstup, just peaked, and we needed to keep her a little bit fresh for a mile because she is heading towards the AJC Oaks, but Glen rode her enormous and she’s a deserved winner", Trainer Danny O’Brien said.
Peter Moody’s superstar mare maintained her unbeaten record scoring by three lengths despite being allotted the top weight of 58kg, in the nation’s premier open sprint, the Lexus Newmarket Handicap. In winning, she became the first horse in Australian racing to land a perfect 10 on city tracks, eclipsing a record first set by 1880 Melbourne Cup winner Grand Flanneur.
The Melbourne Festival of Racing reached its crescendo on Super Saturday, March 12th. Super Saturday, boasting an all black-type race program featured two of the season’s most anticipated Group 1 events - the Dubai Australian Cup and the time honoured Lexus Newmarket Handicap, both Million Dollar races. But Super Saturday 2011 will be remembered for two words: Black Caviar.

His first priority is helping us to run a successful business and for our operation to run as smoothly as possible. He allows us to leave the day to day running to him whenever I’m out of the stables which enables me to work on increasing the owners and horses that we have coming into the stable”. Kylie Scott Trainer: John R Wheeler Proud father, Trainer John Stanton had no hesitation putting pen to paper and nominating Kylie Scott for the Tabcorp Victorian Employee of the Year Awards. “Kylie is an outstanding Ambassador for the racing industry”, he wrote. “Kylie has
been part of the racing community for the last 25 years, learning her trade from her grandfather Jack and myself. This led to Kyle becoming an Amateur Jockey, riding the picnic circuit, of which she became a Premiership winning rider”.

Kim says, “During 2010 not only did Steph get up at 3:30am to ride track work each morning before going to school, often in the afternoon she would assist in other stable duties before settling into study till late in the evening. If we were racing and she had a class spare, instead of studying she would strap at the races and then come home and once again study until late in the evening. Steph will speak to our Owners and give an honest evaluation of how their horses are going. She also she assists Vets and other health providers with information to assist in getting our horses to perform at their best. Whether Steph is riding track work or helping us move large quantities of hay, she always puts in 100%”.

Stephanie Dorning is a great example of the calibre of youth making their way in the Victorian Thoroughbred Racing Industry. A love of horses and a passion for racing saw her attend the first Racing Victoria (RV) Track Rider ID Camp In 2009 which teaches capable riders from across the State how to track ride on thoroughbred racehorses. While finishing Year 12 last year she also completed the Picnic
Debbie Jimmieson has worked weekends for Tony Noonan Racing for nearly 10 years and is an integral part of the stable team. Tony states, “Debbie works here at the weekends, very capably making the feeds, doing the water buckets, mucking out boxes and cleaning up. She highlights the importance of a person who is on a casual basis and although not in the coal face as a worker on a Monday to Saturday
Kylie performs all duties throughout her stable, well beyond her duties of Stable Manager. Up at 3am every morning she works 60-70 hours per week, riding 8 horses each morning. She prepares horses in between riding work for other riders, while still managing rostering and the performance of ground staff. She also attends to the general maintenance of the stable such as painting, mowing, boxes, yards and medicating horses.

basis, her contribution on the weekend allows my staff to have time off and we know that her effort and knowledge of the horses and the property allows us to have that time off and relax.” Tony also commends her dedication to the stable, “Without a person who is able to dedicate all that time in our stable, it would make our job so much more difficult. I think it is often hard for a casual person who comes in just for that short time to be able to build a presence in the stable but Debbie has been able to do that because everyone is aware of her dedication and her constancy to her work”. Track Rider Award Finalists Louisa Penn - Winner Trainer: Dennis Daffy A true passion for the care and welfare of horses is central to everything in Louisa Penn’s life. A dedication to the horse and her Employer compelled Trainer Dennis Daffy to nominate Louisa for the Tabcorp Thoroughbred Employee of the Year Awards this year. Dennis says, “Louisa is fantastic at her job. She is reliable, punctual and I couldn’t speak more highly of her. She knows her job inside and out and lots of Trainers have attempted to poach her but would never leave as she is so loyal. Louisa is also an outstanding rider herself and although she has limited time, she competes in local picnic meetings, notching up wins 3 years in a row”. Louisa also performs stable duties alongside Dennis each morning and is also a fantastic judge of a horses fitness and condition. She drives trucks and the floats to the races and has a great rapport with Stewards and racing officials making her a highly respected horsewoman in her local area. A second year finalist in the Tabcorp Victorian Thoroughbred Employee of the Year Awards, Loretta has continued to show excellence in the Industry. Her trainer Colin Little commends her commitment and skill by writing, “She is amazingly loyal. She drives from Romsey to Caulfield every day (more than an hour and a half drive) to ride track work of a morning and has barely had a sick day. She is an expert horseperson and rides my best and worst horse. She has the most astute knowledge of how horses feel and is my number one track rider”. Colin further compliments Loretta by stating, “She is absolutely dedicated to our stable and the industry. She takes it on personally to work out the needs of the horses and is usually the key partner to turn them around. I would love her to travel with the horses also, but she is too valuable to the other horses at home to travel away”. Lisa Jones Employer: Tony Noonan Racing “Lisa Jones is not only an accomplished track rider, but has a fantastic affinity with the horse”, said Tony Noonan as her sang
her praises. “She has a great association with the animal, she thinks about the horse and she deeply cares about them. Lisa has got tremendous ability as a rider and she also has a real interest in injuries and remedial treatments for the horse. She is always very positive in her attitude, is great around our Clients, and she always greets people with a smile. Lisa really loves the industry”. Lisa had a huge year in 2010, travelling with some of the stables best horses, both in Australia and abroad; a feat not lost on Tony. “Lisa took Ortensia to Hong Kong with one other member of staff and was the one who stayed on in Hong Kong over the Christmas period, missing that special time normally spent with family while the horse was in quarantine post race. She then travelled to the Werribee Quarantine Centre every day to look after Ortensia for the two weeks after the horse returned to Australia. When you look at a member of the staff and they are able to make that sacrifice to be away from home, friends and family, to give all that energy to one horse, I think is an outstanding effort.
New Staff Member Award Finalists Amy Cleland - WiNNER Trainer: Kate Goodrich Amy Cleland has been working with trainer Kate Goodrich for just 4 months, bringing with her a horse background in Eventing, Equestrian and Show Jumping. Although new to the Racing Industry and the Stable, trainer Goodrich says they now could not do without her. “My partner Jon and I currently have 15 horses in work and we ride all their track work ourselves, therefore Amy is on her own most of the morning saddling, washing, dressing and loading horses onto the float. Amy also has a terrific knowledge of soundness issues as she is a very capable up and coming show-jumping rider, so she is great to have around in that she may pick up on something that we may miss”. A small racing stable, Amy allows Goodrich the chance to concentrate on other areas of her operation. “Having Amy enables Jon and I to undergo the work we need to do knowing that the horses are being washed, having their legs iced and being well groomed so that they go to the races fit, healthy and well presented”. Megan DeSpirt Trainers: Daryl and Val Brown Megan has only been in the Racing Industry for just 3short months, but she has already made a big impression to Ballarat based trainer Daryl Brown and his wife Val. “She has integrated with members of the industry and especially our clients, she is always well spoken, well groomed and her maturity goes well beyond her years. We are very proud to have her represent our stable and the racing industry”. Val also states, “Megan is the most reliable person you would find, willing to learn and she has a desire to learn about all aspects of out industry and has enhanced
our operation. We have seen Megan grown in skills and her commitment to the industry and at all times she maintains a positive outlook and wonderful support .“

While Sue is primarily the Office Manager, there is nothing on the farm that she won’t tackle writes Bruechert. “Sue’s organizational skills keep both the farm and myself efficient. Although final decisions rest with myself, she is a great sounding board and plays an important part in all major decisions on Bombora Downs. Sue’s dedication to the job often sees her working weekends or evenings to complete essential tasks and she was even back at work three days after the birth of her second child”.
Daniel Nevill Hollylodge Thoroughbreds Daniel Nevill had a huge year in 2010, taking over the running of the family business, Hollylodge Thoroughbreds. Proud mum Chris Nevill states, “Daniel is reliable and trustworthy and loves the racing and breeding industry that he works in. At quiet times he works for other local Studs with stallions and sales preparation. Daniel represents our Stud to a very high standard when out in the thoroughbred community and most remarkable is the fact he has taken on and succeeded at a very young age of 23 years, the full responsibility of managing the business.” Daniel is also a mentor and support for local Equine students, taking on several students a year and showing them all facets of work on a Stud. At such a young age, Daniel is already a fantastic ambassador for the breeding industry, with a clear vision of where his business is going. His priorities for the future are to ensure the highest standards for his Owners and horses while continuing to absorb industry knowledge from other professionals within the breeding and racing community. Sue Bowring Employer: Bombora Downs Stud Sue Bowring has worked in the Thoroughbred Racing Industry for 7 years, all seven of which have been with Christoph Bruechert at Bombora Downs Stud. “Sue started doing one day a week in the office and four days a week hands on in the paddock”, said Bruechert. “She is now full time in the office and is the primary contact for most of my Clients. The service

Employer Malcolm Boyd states, “June is honest, hardworking, loyal, diplomatic, clean, tidy and knowledgeable. She does everything to an outstanding standard and we simply could not do without her. She has devoted herself to every phase of operations from foaling down, handling horses, cleaning paddocks and boxes. She also reminds other staff of the Stud what they have to do but in a positive and encouraging manner”. June had a big year on the farm personally in 2010, weaning all the babies while keeping the office and record keeping up to a standard that it has never been at before. Malcolm says it is her ability to work unassisted that is her major strength and benefit to the Stud. The youngster came out running and under hard riding from Scott Thurlow, Chik Chik Boom scored by threequarters of a length from Whirlwind in a Maiden Handicap run over 1000m. With the known following she already has, incredibly Chik Chik Boom paid $6.60 on the NSW TAB, and started at $5.50 with the on course Bookmakers.

Chik Chik Boom, by Thorn Park out of Young and Free, is officially a brown filly but by inspecting the image of her win, she is more a ‘roan’ The filly is named after ‘Internet Sensation’ Clare Werbeloff and is prepared at Tuncurry-Forster by trainer Terry Evans. Clare instantly found fame for her ‘eyewitness’ account of a shooting in Sydney's Kings Cross whereby she made up the notorious phrase relating to the sound of gunfire, ‘Chik, Chik, Boom’. Clare later admitted to fabricating the story.

“The filly has gained a large following up here on the Mid North Coast”, said Terry Evans. “When she won her first start even the children on course were yelling and screaming during and after the win. I guess they know all about Clare Werbeloff the real ‘Chik Chik Boom’ girl, and how the horse was named after her. It has turned out to be very exciting, especially for some of the first time racehorse owners”. “The filly is very well and has really improved over the last month or two, she is still a little green although more racing should get her really focused. She is a very strong filly now after months of working in the surf at Tuncurry. Along with all the owners, we are really excited as she smashed the class record and was just under a second off the track record – not too bad for a three-year-old filly having her first start”!, said Evans. ■ Women in RACING | 67

O
ne of the most confusing issues with newcomers to racing is knowing what class of thoroughbred all the different races represent. With this in mind we are endeavouring to minimise this confusion and try to explain in simple terms, the various types of races across Australia. It is also confusing why New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Queensland race clock-wise and Victoria, South Australia, West Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory race anti-clockwise. In New Zealand they race both ways. All State racing authorities now recognise that with so many new gambling opportunities available to the public, they must do everything they can to encourage newcomers, whether they be potential Owners, Breeders or Punters to enjoy racing and invest some of their hard earned money in the Industry in some way.

The top classification of a race is a Group 1 race, followed by a Group 2 and a Group 3 which are shown in the newspapers as G1, G2 and G3. Then we have Listed Races (LR). We also have Set Weights and Penalties races (SWP) which as the name implies has set weights for all thoroughbreds, with various penalties if the thoroughbred has won a race or races of certain values to the winner. They will then have to carry extra weight as
determined by their win/s and weights are also determined by their age and sex.. All Group and Listed Races are classified as Stakes Races ( commonly called Black Type races) and they are generally Weight for Age races (WFA) and/or Major Handicaps such as the Melbourne Cup and Sydney’s Doncaster Mile. WFA as the name implies means that horses are weighted according to their age and sex. Fillies and mares get an allowance from the male horses of 2 kgs
or more depending on their age. Black type races have a significant bearing in the value of a male thoroughbred that hasn’t been gelded, or a female when they have finished their racing careers and are being purchased by a Stud for breeding new stock. The next level of race is an Open race which as the name implies is open to all horses of both sexes providing they meet the age and sex qualifications of the race. Thoroughbreds generally have their first start in a Maiden Race which can be by gender or open to both sexes. After winning their first race they can then progress to Class Races 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 after which they must contest Open Races. When they have won three flat races they can only race in a Class 3 and above, likewise when they have won five races they can only race in a Class 5 and above. This is designed to ensure as much as possible that all races have competitive fields of similar ability.
Each State has a panel of Handicappers who decide the Official Rating of the thoroughbred which is available on their web site. In March 2004, Victoria introduced Ratings Based Handicapping and Ratings Based Races (RB) in Victoria commenced on December 1st, 2006. This has been proven to be a great innovation as previously a thoroughbred that had won 7 races or more had to keep racing in open races, even if they had lost all form and were being uncompetitive. With the ratings system an uncompetitive horses rating can be reduced after each race until they are able to be entered in a race where they can be competitive. New South Wales Racing introduced a similar system called Benchmark Ratings (BM). This is very similar to the Victorian system except that horses with a higher rating than the benchmark rating of
the race can be entered into the race, but must carry a penalty weight higher than the benchmark top weight. The Official Ratings issued by the Handicapping Panels of the various State Authorities are not to be confused with the Ratings that appear in the National Newspapers that feature thoroughbred race fields. They are compiled by a member of the staff of the Newspaper. To the best of my knowledge the only Newspaper that publishes the Official Ratings is the ‘Winning Post’, a weekly thoroughbred racing newspaper available in all States. It is the aim of the Racing Industry in all States to have competitive and exciting thoroughbred racing which encourages punters to place their bets with confidence. Good luck and good punting. ■

• Costs: The average cost of training a horse in Melbourne or Sydney will generally range from $3,000 to about $4,000 per month when the horse is in full work being prepared for racing. When a horse is spelling costs will vary from about $1,000 to $1,500 per month. Monthly costs are lower in other Capital Cities and Provincial Centres. The monthly costs include the trainer’s fees, veterinary expenses, nomination fees to race and incidental costs. For this reason syndicates and/or racing partnerships are an ideal starting point for many owners. There are up to 10 individual owners and/or syndicates names allowed in the official race books.

ace course and turf manager Rebecca Dynon is no stranger to the hard work demanded by the horse racing industry. Growing up in a racing family, by the age of twelve she rode track work before school for her father, a trainer in the Victorian country town of Tatura. At age thirty-three she admits she still loves riding track work and that it led her to a fascination with racing surfaces. “ I became a specialist in pinpointing soreness in horses. I rode for dad mainly, but I had trainers who asked me to jump on their horse and have a feel if something was wrong. I can pick up pretty quickly where I think they’re sore. I don’t tell trainers what to do and how to fix it, I just pinpoint the problem. Everyday you’re riding you can feel the problem getting worse and worse, so I started looking at tracks”, explained Rebecca. She would walk the track the afternoon before the gallops and began to understand the correlation between surfaces and injury. “Tracks have such a big effect and if they’re not maintained in a way that’s good for horses, it can really put you back in a horse’s preparation”, she said. “I come from a trainer’s background and I’ve owned and bred horses. I’ve seen the work and the money that goes into it and also the hope along the way. I understand how much it means just to get horses to the races and to keep them sound and give them every chance. That’s where I work from on the track side. I prepare facilities that are logically made for horses and the way they move, so it gives them every chance to do their best and have a long career”, Rebecca continued. Rebecca finished her apprenticeship in turf
management earlier this year, winning Apprentice of the Year in two out of the three years she attended NMIT. Her fellow students were predominantly focused on golf courses. “There aren’t really that many race course managers in turf management coming through, they’re as rare as hen’s teeth”, she commented. In January Rebecca won the Australian Racecourse Managers Association and Steriline scholarship worth $10,000, plus an all expenses paid trip to Hong Kong and Singapore to see how some of the finest tracks in the world are prepared. She had a chance to assist in penetrometer readings and track patching. “They were weighing up what they’re doing depending on the weather, where they’ve put the running rail, what races they’ve got on and I saw them making decisions right then and there. It’s nothing they can write down in a text book, because it’s like training horses - it’s a day to day decision making process and that’s why it’s so valuable to travel”, said Rebecca. Rebecca also had an opportunity to view all aspects of racing from the betting operations to the steward’s rooms. “That’s been the eye-opener for me, that the track is dictated a lot from the racing operations side and the culture. It made me appreciate that in every country I’ve travelled to, racing is unique and each has its strengths compared to other countries. Australian racing is completely different – you can’t compare one to the other. Putting racing together from training, breeding, the race track and everything is such a mighty effort it doesn’t matter what country it’s in – it’s incredible, it’s

massive and it’s fantastic, because it wouldn’t work if it wasn’t”, she remarked. Rebecca spent nine months as Racecourse Manager at Tatura and Shepparton race tracks. With only one other worker and casual labour she sourced from programs run through the local correctional facility, she took the hard physical work required to prepare a race track to exacting standards in her stride. She is currently the only female Race Course Manager in Australia with an apprenticeship in turf. But she’s taking time out to assess her career options. “I feel there’s a place in racing for me with my unique background. I see myself now as a translator. I speak track rider, I speak trainer, I speak owner and I speak track as well. Sometimes in racing it’s difficult to get a perspective or information if you don’t speak the lingo. You’ve got to know what to ask and how to ask it”, she said. Her eyes sparkle with excitement as she explains, “I have these multi-coloured 3D eyes now and I wish I could be more useful to the industry. If I can do something positive and help a range of stakeholders I couldn’t really ask more than that. I feel they’ve invested in me over the years” Rebecca continued. Could she see herself one day as race course manager of a major city track? “Every trainer wants to train winners there, every jockey wants to ride there, every owner wants to win there and every track manager wants to manage those tracks”, she laughs. “They’re the pinnacle and there should be pinnacle tracks. Young track managers start on the country tracks because there aren’t as many meetings, so we have the leeway to learn but still do an industry standard job. But then you’ll always want to progress and aim for the highest heights”. Rebecca’s enthusiasm and sound philosophy will undoubtedly prove a major benefit for the horse racing industry. ■ Women in RACING | 73
Gaye Gauci The name Gaye Gauci is well known in racing circles, but how many people know the story behind one of Australia’s first female jockeys?

n 1979 Gaye Mullins became one of Australia’s first professional female apprentice jockeys, indentured to Dennis Gray at Wangaratta. Gaye had been writing letters to the Victorian Racing Club since she was eight years old asking when she could become a jockey! Gaye did the last year of her apprenticeship with leading trainer, Angus Armanasco at Caulfield and stayed with him as a travelling foreman for a year. She said this fuelled her desire to learn all she could about the equine athlete. From 1985 to 1988 Gaye pre-trained for the Gujadhur stable in Mauritius and made many trips to South Africa to trial horses pre-purchased for the stable. “I was now ready to have a go on my own and put what I’d learnt into practice,” said Gaye. In 1989 Gaye was granted a permit to train and she set up Forbern Lodge Racing Stables in Wangaratta. She also did some part time work for the then Wangaratta TAFE with the first equine courses and the VRC’s apprentice’s school. “I then decided it was time to re-educate myself by doing various short courses such as alternative medicine, basic business, teacher training and computers. Up till then my only qualifications were with hands-on horses!”, said Gaye. In 1994 Gaye was faced with a diagnosis of bone cancer, which in her words “threw a spanner in the works”. She cut her team of horses from 12 to just three and she said she “knew she wouldn’t die, as she was in too much debt and wouldn’t have been so lucky!” More bad luck followed in 1996 when Gaye was dragged four kilometres along a beach in Adelaide while working a horse, breaking her right leg, left hip and her arm. Still under cancer treatment she said her Doctors at the Cancer Clinic were “not
impressed at all”. Thinking there might be a message in their comments Gaye decided it was time for a career change. She took up a job offer as Assistant Trainer to Michael Kent in Singapore in 1998 until 2001 working with 120 horses and 35 staff. “It was a great learning experience and alerted me to the benefits of having properly trained staff,” said Gaye. Gaye joined Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE (formerly Wangaratta TAFE) in 2002 to assist with the delivery of the National Racing Industry Training Package (RGR02) and is still working with GOTAFE’s specialist equine unit, the National Centre for Equine Education. She has also worked with the AgriFoods Skills Council and the RVL to help improve the training in the racing industry. With a career spanning 890 rides for 86 winners, two premierships and a Dux of Apprentice School, Gaye says she understands what it takes to be a competitive jockey, trainer, stable foreman and stable hand and makes sure her NCEE racing students know her background - that she was “a kid from Wangaratta with a horseracing dream that took me all over the world”. Gaye said stable hands are the heartbeat of most racing stables, as they spend more time with the individual horses than any other person in their entire careers.

the amazing Peta Hitchens By Graeme Kelly
It is easy to be impressed by Peta Hitchens. At 31 she has already put together a curriculum vitae (CV) that would be the envy of many people twice her age.
P
eta has a Bachelor of Equine Science, a Master’s Degree in Veterinary Public Health Management and is currently awaiting examination results on her PhD into jockey safety. But that is only the academic part of her unique story. On the practical side she has become a successful Owner and Breeder, worked at the Coolmore Stud’s in Ireland and Australia, been an assistant Program Manager with Animal Health Australia, a Cadet Stipendiary Steward, an interim Administrator of the Tasmanian Thoroughbred Racing Council and Operations Manager (Thoroughbreds) of the Tasmanian Racing Board.

would let her, she began working at the National Equestrian Centre in Canberra.” “Before long I was riding and working alongside her and once I started riding I became addicted,” added Peta. On completing her secondary schooling, Peta narrowed her career path down to becoming an Apprentice Jockey or going to University.
During this time she became absorbed by a desire to help improve health and safety standards aimed at reducing the incidence of jockeys being injured or killed in race falls. As everyone associated with the industry appreciates, riding thoroughbred racehorses is a hazardous occupation. Peta’s concern about the safety of jockeys and her emergence as an industry participant can be traced back over 20 years, to her younger sister Belinda’s love of horses.
“I’m only 4ft 11in tall and I still weigh 48kg so I could have become an apprentice, but I decided to study for a Degree and it’s a decision I still have some regrets about,” said Peta. Adapting readily to her studies she was rewarded with a scholarship from the New South Wales Board of Gaming and Racing, which enabled her to spend six months at the Coolmore Stud in Ireland in 2001. “I worked in a broodmare barn as a Veterinary Nurse in the foal intensive care Hospital and as a Laboratory Technician in the O’Byrne and Halley Veterinary Laboratory. Excitingly, one of the mares I looked after was Might and Power’s dam Benediction.”
“Belinda started riding at four years of age,” said Peta. “She was so enthusiastic about horses, that as soon as our parents
By then the demands on her time combined with her overseas travel had forced Peta to stop competing, and it was at this time
that her parents bought a property at Murrumbateman, NSW. She then had her ‘pony’ Petite ‘n’ Dapper, a mare sired by Sir Dapper, covered by the Group 2 winning Bluebird (USA) stallion Sports Works, who stands at the Riverdene Stud at Wagga Wagga. The resultant foal was retained by Peta and named Neat Work. Given to Canberra based trainer Nick Olive, Neat Work proved to be quite a money spinner with nine wins – including the Tony Campbell Cup – for earnings in excess of $127,000. As Neat Work’s racing career was unfolding Peta was still pondering on the direction her life should follow and after gaining work experience at Randwick and Rosehill with Greg Rudolph, she applied for the position of Cadet Stipendiary Steward with Racing Services Tasmania and was selected to fill the vacancy. “I enjoyed working as a cadet steward, but ultimately I felt I was on the wrong side of the racing fence,” said Peta. So in the final months of her term as a cadet steward she applied for a PhD Scholarship at the Menzies Research Institute in Hobart. “While I was employed as a steward I became interested in the injury and medical records of jockeys and how their falls and injuries were being monitored. As well as that, in 2005 Ray Silburn, who was the first jockey to win on Neat Work, became a quadriplegic as a result of a horrific fall at Canberra. That further increased my desire to make a difference,” she said. Peta continued her association with racing in the four years that she prepared her thesis and along the way found time to prepare three important papers for publication. The first of these, published in the Medical Journal of Australia in 2009, was titled ‘The incidence of race-day jockey falls in Australia, 2002-2006.’ This revealed that in the study period, there were 3,360 jockey falls from 748,367 rides, representing a fall rate of 0.42 per 100

rides in flat racing and 5.26 per 100 rides in jumps racing. Surprisingly, although the more severe injuries occurred during the race, most falls occurred pre- or post-race. As Peta said, “any one of those falls could have been career ending” and there were five fatalities during the study period. In June 2010, she had a review of risk factors for falls in flat racing published in the British Medical Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Then in November, the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention accepted her paper titled ‘Predictors of race-day jockey falls in jumps racing in Australia’. Peta went on to say “the studies identified a range of factors associated with falls, that if confirmed, could form the basis for formulating strategies to improve occupational health and safety standards.” Inexperience of the jockey, less accomplished horses and competitive racing were found to be important contributing factors to falls by jockeys. With her reputation burgeoning, Peta went to London in September to present her results to the Safety 2010 Conference, and on her way home presented at the
International Conference for the Health, Welfare and Safety of Jockeys at the luxurious Meydan Racing Centre in Dubai. Now, with her PhD completed, Peta has accepted a position with Menzies as a Research Associate in Health Economics and will be conducting a study on the economic impact of injuries and fatalities to jockeys in the thoroughbred racing industry in Australia. Now that she is no longer acting in an official capacity in racing, Peta said that she intends to continue to race horses in partnership with her parents. The family retained and are currently racing Gypsy Woman, a four-year-old mare by Delago Brom, who is in the care of Nick Olive and has already tasted success winning at Gundagai, NSW. “My parents have cut back on the breeding side, but I definitely want to keep racing and breeding horses in the foreseeable future. $2.35 million in ASSISTANCE remediation work at TAB and Strategic Non-TAB venues throughout Queensland, such as Rockhampton, Emerald, Warwick, Townsville and Ipswich. The actual amount required at each venue depends on how much RQL receives under its insurance cover for TAB venues, but what is clear is the Government contribution will go a long way to fully remediating key venues throughout Queensland. In addition to the $1.45 million allocated for TAB and Strategic Non-TAB venues, $900,000 has been specifically allocated to assist country thoroughbred race clubs. Of this amount, $200,000 has been earmarked to address workplace health and safety related damage at NonStrategic Non-TAB venues caused by the recent weather events, and $700,000 has been allocated to assist Non-TAB Clubs in meeting the minimum venue and equipment standards required to ensure the safety of racing animals and participants.

he chairman of Racing Queensland Limited (RQL) Mr Bob Bentley applauded the State Government decision to provide $2.35 million to repair flood damaged racecourses and to assist country race clubs to undertake work to meet minimum venue and equipment standards. Mr Bentley applauded the announcement today, saying that it was just the tonic for racetracks to get back to the business of racing following the recent devastating
weather events throughout Queensland. “I’d like to recognise the efforts of the Hon. Peter Lawlor MP, former minister responsible for the administration of the Racing Act 2002 and his replacement, the Hon. Tim Mulherin MP, who has moved swiftly to act on a recommendation from RQL to provide this level of financial support,” said Mr Bentley. Today’s announcement will see up to $1.45 million spent to undertake flood and cyclone
The State Government will provide the $900,000 funding to RQL and this will be released for individual projects at specific venues. Initially, assessments of these projects will be identified by the individual Country Racing Associations, with recommendations then provided to the Country Racing Committee (CRC) for assessment. In turn, recommendations will be made by the CRC to RQL, who will then refer to the Government for final approval. Mr Bentley went on to recognise the importance of getting these venues back up to scratch and fully operational as soon as possible. ■ Women in RACING | 81

FORMER JOCKEY PAUL GOODE WAS ‘BOWLED OVER’ WHEN HE MARRIED THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE, CATHERINE HILL
P
aul Goode who was born in England, had plenty to boast about – and it wasn’t regarding cricket and The Ashes. Goode, 32, married his long-time sweetheart, Catherine Hill at St Thomas’ Church, North Sydney, with the reception held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Sydney. Catherine, Office Manager for the leading Sydney stable of Chris Waller, looked radiant in her wedding dress, designed by Maggie Sottero, made from gold silk with Swarovski Crystal detailing. The couple met in the UK in 1999, when Paul was an apprentice jockey and Catherine a racing secretary. They both moved to Australia in 2003. Paul, who was seriously injured in a horrific race fall at Queanbeyan in late June 2009, became a T-4 complete paraplegic, but despite his circumstances, the young man has remained extremely positive and is a proven inspirational to those who have mixed in his company. “The sun was shining and we all enjoyed a

wonderful afternoon”, Paul said. “The bride was absolutely gorgeous and we were so pleased to spend such an occasion with all our close friends and relatives, many of whom had travelled great distances”. More than 90 guests attended the wedding with over 20 of them travelling from the UK. The groomsmen comprised of Paul’s two best mates from England, Ryan CodyBoutcher and Neil Pollard, NSW trainer Mark Schmetzer and apprentice Benny Vassallo.
Bridesmaids were Amy Irwin (Customer Service Manager, Sydney Turf Club), Claire Bird (Gerry Harvey’s Racing Manager) and Michelle Penza (wife of Jockey Jeff Penza). TVN presenter Richard Callander was the MC, and numerous trainers and jockeys attended including Chris Waller, Guy Walter, Matthew Smith, Barbara Joseph, Jimmy Cassidy, Jeff Penza and Patrick Murphy. The wedding cars were supplied by Ian Mayer from Sydney City Lexus. ■
