Clara Bond

Is back! Clara Bond! Welcome back! It has been exactly a year since you were last on our cover to issue five. Glad to hear I didn't bore you the first time around! When did you decide to start writing this new E.P? When I started writing again after the release of The Chase, it wasn't immediately with the intention of releasing another EP. I’m literally always writing. After a while I realised that I had so many new songs that I wanted people to hear, and so releasing another EP just felt like the right move. What is the E.P called? “Focus”.

Why did you choose to call it that? Focus is the name of the lead single from the EP, which worked out quite well as ‘Focus’ has also been my state of mind for the last year as I’ve been writing it! What’s your favourite song off the album and why? The answer to this changes daily! Right now it’s ‘Promised Land’, the final track on the record and my 21st century Cinderella story. It’s just so unlike anything I’ve ever done and it really makes me feel something every time I listen to it. So atmospheric and dreamy and the production is absolute perfection.

Being a year on, what can your fans expect from the new Clara Bond E.P? I’ve grown up so much in the last year, and experienced a lot that tested my strength. That definitely translates into the music I was writing during that transition. The content is more mature and honest as a result. I think it’s so important to grow as a human being and also as an artist and writer. It’s my job to evolve, and for my music to evolve with me. If this EP was too much like the last, I wouldn't consider it a personal success. Did you bring forward any elements from “The Chase” onto “Focus”? I guess what carries over the most is my writing style. I was the sole writer of The Chase EP, which is really my comfort zone. On this EP, every track is written with a different collaborator, so each song is like a hybrid of 2 or

3 different people’s writing styles. It’s great because it gives you the opportunity to try something you wouldn't necessarily think to try on your own. I didn't want to write just love songs anymore. I wanted to talk about things that are a little more difficult to talk about but at the same time are totally honest. In issue five you said sometimes you get writers block. Did you have this problem on “Focus”? Every writer gets writers block at some point, it’s an absolute inevitability. I must have had writers block on some of the songs that didn't make the cut. But every song on this EP was so organic. I always say the best songs are the ones that you don't have to force. Rupert Pope and I wrote the chorus to Promised Land before I had even sat down. What is your favourite place

to write material? One of my co-writers has a huge house in the middle of the countryside near where I live. The studio is dark and messy and I just love it. We’ve written so many amazing songs there. There’s no perfect formula to the perfect writing space, it just has to make you feel comfortable. And if you’re writing with someone else you have to have to actually like that person too. You’re not going to be able to expose your feelings or vulnerability writing a song if you hate the person next to you. You also said your music was “Poptastic” is that how you would still describe your music? Haha somewhat! I will always be a pop writer, but I never like to tie myself down to one genre. I’d like to do my own take on a country song or a rock song and people wouldn’t bat an eyelid because they have

come to expect that of me. It’s not really something I actively try and do, but I listen to such a wide range of music styles that I’m bound to be inspired. What has this record taught you? With this record I worked for the first time with collaborators, so it opened my eyes to a lot about writing technique, as every writer has their own process. At the same time I learnt that you can’t lose sight of your personal vision for the lyrics and meaning behind the song. People can try and steer you in the wrong direction, but ultimately, you’re the one who’s going to be singing this song possibly every day for the rest of your life. Hopefully.

Putting music aside what have you been up to in the last year? Baking. I take baking very

seriously. I’m one of those really annoying people that posts pictures on Instagram of every bake they do. I have novelty cookware and I cant stop. “Hello I’m Clara and I’m a bakeaholic. “

I’ve definitely learnt a few life lessons but I’m preparing myself for some more! In another years time I’m sure I’ll be embarrassed about how naive I was ‘this time last year’. Where would you like to see yourself this time next year?

Obviously back in Image 34! I’d like to be signed to a major label that believes in me and the kind of music I want to create. Oh, and married to Dave Franco. Any last shout-outs? Dave; call me.

Suzy Bogguss Jumping right in how would you best describe your new album “Lucky”? I would describe it as a fresh look at songs written by an iconic artist, sung by a kindred voice but of another gender. What drew you cover Merle Haggard songs? I have been a huge fan of his since I was a child. My first charting single in the US was Somewhere Between, a Merle song. I have really been looking for beautiful melodies to lock my voice into and when I started delving into Merle’s material to find a new song for me to record, it really hit me that I would sing any of them .They are so strong and melodic

and the lyrics are simple but meaty. Do you feel the songs now have a new meaning or depth to them now a female singer is singing them? I wouldn’t say that, but I have had a lot of people tell me that it made them listen again and differently. Merle has been singing these fabulous songs for a long time. He is such a masculine dude and yet writes some very vulnerable stories. I just wanted folks to be jolted a little to get them to direct their attention to his masterpieces. What is your favourite song from the album?

I have a new one every day. Whichever one clicks with the audience on any given night becomes my favorite for that time. Why this song? You have had an incredible career so far, achieving one platinum and three gold albums! Can you believe you have come this far when you grew up in such a small town? Mostly I just remember not having the knowledge of how the music business works and it didn’t occur to me until I was in college with a broader group of people that anyone who is driven to make music and who is open to learning the ropes has the opportunity. What would you say to someone dreaming big but thinking they can’t make it as they live in a small town? I would probably tell them that in my experience you need to reach out and allow yourself to grow. The internet is a great way to get your feet wet if you can’t afford to move to a music centre. We all need help and

education and an audience to make music your livelihood. What led you to making music? I wanted to see new things. I started travelling and booking myself into clubs along the way so I could pay for travel. Eventually I realized that the music was my true passion and not just a vehicle for my travels. Do you still think there is a large market for country singers? That’s a tough question. One theory is that to be a genuinely country singer you would need a time machine. Our world has advanced so much it is difficult to think that all the songs about the back woods etc are conjured up in someone’s imagination of how things used to be. I tend to stay with human relationships in my songs. These songs are easier for me

to feel and be honest singing. Being a country singer your style is very different to pop singers.

and Iove his ability to tackle complicated personal relationships. Any last shout-outs?

How do you feel about the way the pop industry is representing its artist’s twerking and all? Ha! Well, Miley was a baby who lived next door to us for her first few years. She was a ball of energy from the get go. I think performers have a desire to keep evolving and we always feel like we need to get attention, hence the word “performer”. That would not be my choice for hamming it up but I don’t look like that in a small piece of clothing. Never did.

If you could record another artists songs on one album who would it be? Well, there are lots of great performers. I chose Merle Haggard because I feel a connection to his musical style

I hope that folks will listen to this album and envision these 5 musicians, Pat Bergeson, Chris Scruggs, Charlie Chadwick Chris Brown and Charles Treadway all in oe small room above our garage with my husband Doug engineering and me singing in that same room too. This was a group of gracious musicians sharing amazing songs and listening to each other so they could all contribute to a spontaneous homage to a great singer- songwriterMerle Haggard ---------------------------------------Click here to buy Suzy Bogguss brand new album “Lucky”

Rachel Rose Rachel Rose, welcome to Issue Nine of Image 34 and congratulations on being the ninth cover girl. So for anyone who doesn’t know who you are give us a little introduction to yourself? Thank you thank you! Ahhh hello I am a blonde/singer/songwriter/danc er/gym goer/peanut butter lover from Farnham, Surrey. :D When did you realise you wanted to sing? I've always known. I didn't know I'd always known, obviously, as every child has a big dream, but when I was in the playground singing my favourite MJ or Spice Girl track

with my friends I knew I wanted to be just like them, we all did! Just the difference between my friends and I, is my want to perform and my want to sing, never left me. What led you down that path? Haha it's actually quite funny, I was in my friends garden when I was about ten and we were singing "Let me be your wings" from Thumbelina (ahaha I know right?!) and her mum said I had a nice voice and asked if I'd ever considered singing lessons. Honestly, I didn't even know singing lessons existed but I asked my mum anyway (we have to bare in mind that I

found new hobbies every week I wanted to take up that never stuck; trampolining, fencing, horse riding, swimming, dancing (that one stuck) etc etc) she probably thought it'd be another hobby that lasted 5 minutes‌ 15 years later‌ How long did it take you to realise your style? My style took work and growth and development, I think you have to know who you to understand who you are as a musician. Sometimes that can happen for people straight away, they just know, and others have to work on themselves; I had to work. But when it happens, it's like falling in love, you just hear a track, or write a song and you're like "this is who I am" and it's magic. What music inspires you? People ask me this question a lot, and genuinely, I take

inspiration from EVERYWHERE! I grew up with a collection of different sounds. My brother, Mum and Dad are all musical in their way, or have a deep love for music and certain styles. My brother plays guitar and would listen to bands like Metallica and Nirvana, my mum played piano and sings a bit (although she'd deny it) and listens to great soul, funk, boogie boogie and blues (a massive blues and boogie woogie inspiration has been Ben Waters, but I'll get onto him later), my dad plays guitar and sings was always playing artists like Alanis Morissette, REM, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. My personal choice as a child was anything pop related, in the charts, but I loved all the music my family played and I think you can take a little out of everything that's out there. Sorry if this is a little rambly but I think the point I'm trying to make is, people always want you to say

that one person has inspired all my work, but so many musicians have inspired mine. I said I would mention Ben Waters again later, this is later lol, he has been such a huge inspiration on not only my music but the musician I want to be. He is the kindest, most generous and most INCREDIBLY talented person I have ever worked with, who you will probably have never have heard of. He has been so encouraging of me and my music and allowed me to appear on stage with him and meeting some of his music friends like Ray Davies, Charlie Watts and Jools Holland. If I had to say a my biggest musical PERSON who inspires me, it'd be him. Is there any music that you can’t stand? I'm pretty sure that isn't a single style of music that I hate. I bet I could find at least one from every style that I like :D.

You have a very unique fashion sense where did that come from? Haha do I?! Well thanks :D. I honestly don't know. I felt quite restricted growing up, I didn't have the confidence to just wear whatever I wanted because I didn't have the confidence in myself to just say "Hey, I like it, if you don't, that's cool." Whereas now, if I like it? I'm buying it!! I LOVE statement gold jewellery, I just LOVE it. I always have. I love that it's bold and fun and glam. I am no good to anybody in heels so 9 times out of 10 you'll find me in trainers. My collection is growing rapidly haha. I think fashion, like music, if you love it and believe in it, you'll rock it, and it won't matter if somebody says "I don't like it" because there's somebody else out there going "she's killing it!" How do you get ready in the

morning? I am actually not massively OTT in the mornings. I get up, get washed and dressed into workout wear, have a smoothie, go to the gym, home, shower, then usually if I have a plan for the day, I will have already chosen my outfit the night before, so that goes on, foundation, blush, bronzer, mascara, blow dry hair, put on relevant jewellery. Et Voila. Je suis fini.

You styled yourself for the Image 34 shoot what was your favourite look and why? Ummmm ooooh I don't know actually, possibly the tartan trousers, bomber, air force ones and black bandeau. I am SO into tartan right now, and the jacket is by Hot!mess who are my favourite fashion line right now. Growing up was your style always this way?

Haha no!!! God no! It's actually a thing amongst my friends and I to laugh at our fashion growing up. It was bloody awful! We used to wear colour matching tops belts and shoes, my colour was yellow. Oh yeh! Seriously though, you see young girls now who are killing the fashion scene already?! Honestly. I didn't get Facebook until uni, I didn't have instagram or twitter, so I am holding them responsible for guiding people in the nonembarrassing direction and holding their lack of existence responsible for my epic failings. Haha! Of course your fans have had covers of songs from you which are brilliant. What was your favourite to record? Ooh this is a tough one‌ hmmm, ok I have two favourite favourites. The first one was If I Die Young cover by The Band Perry. I had some

scary neck and throat problems at the end of 2013 which meant I had to take some time off music, was horrible. The day before I recorded that cover, I had to have an endoscopy to find out if the throat/neck issues had done any damage to my vocal chords. Thankfully, all was ok, big phew, so to celebrate I decided I'd try my first attempt at singing and piano (I don't play piano so I blagged it lol) and sang my heart out. :D. The second one was a cover I did as a surprise for one of my best friends to play her at her hen do with her big brother Chris. She and I used to sit outside Chris's bedroom as teens and listen to him sing because he wouldn't let us in to listen lol so I knew she would love it if we sang together. We recorded a video of us singing Certain Things by James Arthur ft Chasing Grace together then I played the video to her at the hen do. There was a lot of tears :D lol it meant the world to me to see her so happy. Moments

like that make remind me that I do the best thing in the world. When can your fans finally get some material from yourself? GAH! I am so excited! So I released my first acoustic EP "Introducing" 2 years ago which was incredible, but I then went back and did lots and lots more writing to work on my sound and my next step. I have a single coming out this spring which is just ooohhhhh I'm SO excited about it. It's fun and upbeat and funky and soulful, and just perfect for sunshine. I really hope everybody likes it :D

What inspired your own material? My first EP was inspired by all things acoustic. I grew up with my dad and brother playing the guitar and was in love with it so wanted to do it. Ed Sheeran's work was very

inspirational too. Although I loved that sound, I felt it wasn't me, I felt I had more to give so my latest work (that nobodies heard yet ;]) has been the "in love" moment. Knowing it's the one. It came from my fabulous producer and cousin Dan Weinberg. He sent me over the track of song I'm releasing in the spring with a little note like "Just playing around, bit different, let me know what you think." And I was just like :O this is it!!! Since that moment it's all made sense. Its harmonies, and big voice, and funky/pop/soulful beats. How involved do you like to be with the whole process of creating a song? I like to be as involved as possible. I think it's the best way to be. Music is like a sending out a piece of your heart, you want people to understand your heart, so you gotta get it right.

Do you think it’s important for artists to write their own material? I think people will do what they will do, but for me personally I cannot imagine not writing my own music. I would feel false getting up and singing somebody else's word everyday (covers don't count because you are honouring somebody else's work). When you sing a song you have written you're putting your life and your experiences out there like "I've been through this, anybody else?' whether its happy, excited, sad, heartbroken, whatever, we like to feel we're not alone. My favourite song to share with people is Thank You For Breaking My Heart (you can find it on my website or soundcloud), a track I wrote about a year after my first love broke up with me and I realised it was the best thing to ever happen to me. When

I sing that I see people just nodding and smiling like "yep, been there" and it literally makes me want to run up and kiss them all over their smiling faces.

achieve everything, and share my music with everyone.

How would you best describe your music?

Toured around Europe, released my single/album and been to all the music award ceremonies :D

It's an ongoing story that I want people to be apart of.

If Image 34 asked you next year what have you done, what do you hope to say?

Any last shout-outs? If you could only pick one word to describe the new music what would it be? Funk/soul/pop (it's got no spaces, so that's one word right?? haha When can fans expect to hear it? Spring/summer time :D Where do you hope this music will take you? I want it to take me as far as humanly possible. I want to

LoopG, my friend and producer. I haven't mentioned him yet but he is also part of the RR team and one of the guys writing my album with me. He's fabulous!!

"Reflexology more than a short cut to happy feet" Fernleaf Complementary Therapies is run by Merel Keuning, following careers in office/administrative support position of an equine hospital and later childcare, she studied Reflexology in Woking and gained an ITEC diploma in anatomy and physiology and reflexology. Reflexology is a hands-on therapy that involves using acupressure technique to stimulate specific areas in the feet and/or hands to restore and maintain natural processes, induce relaxation and support the body's self healing ability. For a reflexology treatment you will need to remove shoes, socks/tights and the treatment will be carried out in a reclining chair. There is

no need to feel self-conscious about feeling ticklish as firm pressure is used. When humans walked barefoot, unintentionally reflex points where stimulated thus relieving tension, in today’s fast paced world filled with increasing demands it is important for people to take responsibility of their own healthcare needs and reflexology may be one way of managing this. The holistic approach to health resonates profoundly with what I believe, creating balance between body, mind and soul as they are not independent of one another, they are intertwined, what effects one effects the other, my treatment approaches are immensely individualised for

the unique needs of each person. Reflexology may revitalise the body to use its own natural healing process, tension may be reduced and you may feel relaxed after a treatment, you might feel that the quality of your sleep improves and find improvement in your mood and sense of wellbeing. -------------------------------------With Valentine's Day tucked away for another year and Mothers day coming up, why not treat yourself or your loved ones to an hour of relaxing reflexology? Hi Everyone! I'm Justine Emma MUA and I was the makeup artist for this issue of Image 34 cover shoot with Rachel Rose! If you like the look and want to try it out for yourself, well you're in luck. I'm going to tell you my step by step guide on how I created this makeup look and what products I used to achieve this. Enjoy! 1. First I prepared the skin for makeup application by cleansing, toning and moisturising. If you suffer with dry skin it is important to apply a good amount of moisturiser to the dry patches of skin. This stops your foundation from looking uneven and patchy. If you apply makeup to dirty skin also, it can make your foundation base look off colour and dirty.

TIP - Using a light exfoliator once a week helps to keep your skin looking clear and refreshed by removing the dead skin cells. However do not use more than once a week as your skin can react to it and become oily with break outs.

2. Next I applied the correct shade and tone of foundation to suit Rachel's skin tone. To areas that needed concealing i.e. under the eyes, any spots and blemishes, I applied the foundation slightly more heavily to act as a concealer. This helps to ensure that the foundation base is all one even colour. Using a different concealer could be seen on camera as the shade and tone may not always be exactly the same. TIP - To find your perfect foundation colour, apply a small amount of foundation to your neck and chest, if the colour can't be seen against your skin, then that's the perfect colour match for you! If your neck is a different colour to your chest, match the foundation to your chest and apply the foundation down to your neck. 3. To contour Rachel's face, I

used Ben Nye Cream Highlight Wheel applying it down her nose, above and underneath her eyebrows, around and under her nose, under her eyes and on her chin. To add and enhance shadows I used Ben Nye Cream Shadow Wheel applying it along the sides of her nose, under her cheek bones, along her jaw and hairline. I blended this with a clean sponge and set it with Ben Nye Neutral Set Colorless Face Powder to make it matte and to get rid of any shine.

TIP - You should always apply powder with a powder puff with a dabbing motion. This is because a powder puff sets the foundation whereas using a brush the powder will just sit on top. You will find you won't need to touch up your powder as often using the powder puff because of this. Talcum powder can also be used as a translucent face powder.

4. Eyebrow shaping comes next! I filled in Rachel's eyebrows using taupe and brown eyeshadow very lightly applied. To groom and set her eyebrows, I then used MAC Clear Brow Set. This will keep her eyebrows in shape all day long. TIP - Using eyebrow pencils can give a hard line whereas powder will give a softer more natural brow line. It's always best to use dark colours for your eyebrows but the lighter your hair colour, the lighter you apply it. 5. Now it's the eye makeup! Using Ben Nye Essential Eyeshadow Palette, I first heavily applied the colour 'Vanilla' eyeshadow across her eyelids and up to her eyelid crease. I wanted to apply a heavy amount to make the white really bright and stand out. As it's such a light colour, more needs to be applied to achieve this. To

finish off the eyeshadow, I then blended the colour 'Mink Stole' eyeshadow into her eyelid crease. This will act as a shadow and make her eyes look really big and bright. TIP - When applying your eyeshadow, if any excess falls underneath your eyes, don't worry! Apply swift strokes of face powder to remove the excess eyeshadow using your face powder brush. 6. Now it's the finishing touches to the eye makeup! Using Maybelline New York Eyestudio Lasting Drama Intense Black Gel Eyeliner, I took it from the corner of her eyes to the edge and created a flick at the ends. Then a set of Rachel's favourite false eyelashes where glued to her top lash line to enhance her lashes even more. Mascara was used to finish off the look and to blend her natural lashes into the false ones. TIP - When applying false

eyelashes, apply the glue to the false lash strip and to wait a few moments for the glue to start getting 'tacky'. This is the perfect time to then adhere them to your lash line. When you stick them to your lash line pinch your real lashes and the false lashes together until the glue has fully dried. Doing this will stick the false lash strip as close to your own lash line as possible. 7. Sleek Blush By 3 Lace Palette was used to give a nice rosy complexion on Rachel's cheeks. The matte pink shade was used and applied along her cheekbones. I blended the blusher out after using a clean powder brush. 8. Last but not least, the lips! I used a red lip liner to outline Rachel's lips. This will stop the lip colour from bleeding and give more shape and definition to the lips. Mac Lipstick colour 'Ruby Woo' was then used to give Rachel that deep red matte lip.

Thank you for taking the time to read my step by step guide and I hope you all enjoy recreating this look! ---------------------------------------If you any questions on the makeup and products used please feel free to Tweet or Facebook me With Love Justine Emma MUA x ----------------------------------------

Home & Decor Since times are hard and money needs to stretch as we can make it, I thought I would show you some bargains I picked up. In my first article I told you about how important space is within a room, I did have a wooden chest at the end of my bed but I spied a simple tall unit from none other than Ikea. The tall white unit is from their Billy range simple and effective for only £20.00 this meant I could pick up a few other pieces, and now have a nice little floral collection up the top of the unit. I’ve moved a few bits around in my room and have found I have

better space and feels clean and fresh.

Another great bargain I picked up was

this gorgeous black oval mirror. It has a gold trim which has been worn and a detailed bow up the top. When I first saw the price for £15.00 I thought wonderful, then took a double take. It was reduced to £7.50, where from I hear you say? Matalan! Who would have thought? This will be going up on my wall very soon. As I work at a beautiful interior shop (India Jane) it hard not to walk out every day with

something. I had my eye on a particular cushion for a while and one day I thought I would snap it up as it was the last one in store. The cushion is £35.00 but that comes with a feather pad inside, who could resist those colours. I love the roses and how easy the colours work in my room and with my pink and turquoise cushions from Ikea.

also my beautiful crystal lamp base with shade for only £25.00. It just goes to show you don’t need to spend a fortune to get any room of yours looking fabulous! Check out some of my visual merchandising I do in store at India Jane on Instagram, _hollieolivia_ till next time! Recently opened a home sense store (same company as TKMaxx) near me and must say I love it! It’s a fast a have too much jewellery and do love to have my chunky necklaces on show. I walked into store and found the most perfect gold detailed Tbar. Now as they run the same as TKMaxx you expect low prices but I got this for just £8.00 which was brilliant, and
