A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR if you feel that you’re ready for a new chapter in life... and that a new name, to signify your new family, would be just the way to do it. You wouldn’t be giving anything up, just allowing yourself to grow into something else, something more. Well, I suppose that’s what happened with BASH. We loved our BASH identity and our readers did too, but we have this great family – the IMAGE family, with its 40 years of heritage – and we decided that we wanted that bond to be a little closer. We’re proud of our sisters at IMAGE Magazine, IMAGE Interiors & Living and image.ie and being IMAGE Brides allows us to stand tall beside them, with a badge of honour that tells readers who may not have known before, that we believe in that same spirit of style, smarts and sophistication, which Irish women have trusted since 1975. And what’s inside is just as lovely (maybe a little fancier; but who doesn’t love fancy?). We’re still going to give you outstanding, original event inspiration, directional bridal fashion ideas and off-the-beaten-aisle trends – all in the beautifully executed manner that our team has become known for. We’ll still speak to you as a friend, make you blub at soppy stories and poke a little fun at you, if you’re taking your bride-self too seriously. We’ll still invite you to parties, give honest advice and leave you with a magazine that you’re proud to have on your coffee table, when your mates call ‘round. In short, BASH was the girl, IMAGE Brides is the woman – and you’re about to benefit from a whole lot of wedding wisdom.

elcome to the first issue of IMAGE Brides. Well, I say first issue, but it’s only a first issue of sorts, because we’re not brand new – like many a bride, we’ve taken a new name. You might call us IMAGE Brides, née BASH, but that’s not very catchy. Little Lady BASH had six gorgeous issues, gained legions of fans and won Wedding Magazine of Year in her first year on the shelves… and now we’ve decided to take her journey on a slightly different path. But why change the name, you ask? Isn’t that a bit controversial? Well, I wouldn’t say that changing your name at marriage is controversial… anymore. But it’s definitely something that you might have a heated discussion with your friends about – or a huffy one with your husband-to-be, for that matter. It’s a very personal choice. I didn’t change my name. It’s funny, growing up, I thought my name was the epitome of hick, until faced with the prospect of getting rid of it; then I realised it was too inherently bound to my identity to just, all of a sudden, have another. The feminist in me rejects the idea that marrying someone should have to mean giving up any scrap of my identity. Plus, my husband’s surname is Price, so I didn’t fancy the Jordan quips (classy and all, as she is now). But, there are some situations where changing your name is an excellent idea. If your full name translates as something obscene in Portuguese, and you’re planning a move to Brazil, for example – go for it. Or

t’s pretty clear that, around here, we’re all about embracing the wedding joy. We reckon that for the few short months you get to be a bride-to-be, you should bloody well bathe in blooms. Talk about the merits of Chantilly versus Cluny lace to anyone who will (or won’t) listen; organise three hen parties (a week in Portugal for the besties; a weekend in London for the laugh and a night in Dublin, because you have to have one at home, too) to which attendance is compulsory; drag at least two friends to each

(Saturday, 9am) dress shop appointment, until you find the one. Do it all; we won’t judge. However, in the midst of living your bridey life, it can be worthwhile to think about things from another point of view: namely that of your wedding guests-to-be. How will they feel about the table plan you created based solely on who’ll look best together in photos? Or the hand-dyed table linen, which everyone better Instagram using your official wedding hashtag? And sure if you can’t laugh at yourself…

Why spend months bleeding all over your home-made bunting, when every other Tom, Dick and Harry is busy doing the exact same thing!?

’ve nothing against brides. Some of my best friends are brides/have been brides/are determined to be brides. But as a woman who will never marry, due to commitment issues that make even finishing an omelette difficult, I am in the very interesting position of pure matrimonial voyeur. My belief is that when God was stuffing his conveyor belt of women with the bridal “gene”, I was lost under a sea of lady limbs, ’til the wise men were boxing us up and noticed a slight deadness behind my eyes. They couldn’t send me back to the love station, so stitched in some frankincense and an extra kidney to make up for it (I jest, I’m totally capable of love; ask my stuffed Russell Terrier). As a result, I have the pleasure of attending loadsa’ legal love-ups without
image.ie/brides
ever having to consider whether this would be how I and Craig/Lucas/Mariah (at this point, I won’t even commit to a gender; though the sensual swirls that Lynx Africa stirs inside me would point to poor Craig) would do it. My point is this: as someone who spends absolutely no daydreamy time planning my own wedding, I’m totally free to enjoy yours, without any pre-conceived judgments. I’ve witnessed plenty of doe-eyed duos exchange rings, vows and saliva, and it’s always gorgeous and sometimes I’ll even cry little Prosecco tears of joy. Every ceremony feels unique, with love bombs going off all over the shop. But once we leave the church/cliffside, it seems that every reception now looks a little samey. Like Pinterest has become the Ikea of weddings; not in price – God knows,
couples are still forced to turn tricks to afford it all, but it’s like our entire generation woke up in a Dystopian world where George Orwell handed them a Dinner this way and a Dancing that way sign and said “RIGHT! There is now a way to do this and it must always include jam jars filled with tea lights”. Okay I know, the 1984 comparison is a tad full-on and I realise that all these Pinterest-inspired touches form a nice trend, but why spend months bleeding all over your home-made bunting, when every other Tom, Dick and Harry is busy doing the exact same thing!? Like, if you’re going to spend all that green on giant Jenga and other clichéd garnishes, why not blaze your own décor trail instead of following in the footsteps of others? But where to start… I dunno, maybe have a look on Pinterest?

hen Aussie Gene visited Adele’s family farm, his mind was totally made up – there was no better place for their wedding than right there with the cattle in Cavan. A hog roast and plenty of booze were Gene’s only other criteria, so Adele set about designing the kind of wedding that makes the IMAGE Brides team swoon. If there were an award for the best DIY wedding installation, these two would reign supreme; who knew that with some old bunk beds and a bit of fencing, you’ve got the makings of a classy lawn bar? With plenty of lanterns, gorgeous tipis and yards of bunting in soft pastel shades, Adele and her design team transformed a rural Cavan location into the ideal backdrop for a whimsical wedding.

Aoife & Niall
MEET THEIR PLANNERS
W
hen we heard these two were getting hitched, we figured it would be jam-packed with trendy quirks – one look at the shots and we quickly understood why their hashtag #lovejam trended on Twitter (and why random punters started tweeting requests to come along). So, we had to sit down with Queens of Neon’s Sharon Greene, to find out just what it takes to curate such a memorable event. HOW DID YOU APPROACH THE LOVEJAM AESTHETIC? After Aoife and Niall signed off on our wintry mood boards, we sat down as a team and discussed how to incorporate the concept of frost, icebergs and snow throughout the venue – and in keeping with their signature pared-back style. WHAT ELEMENTS DID YOU WORK WITH? Paper is the most versatile material to work with; so we used this to create the dramatic icebergs, which hung from the ceiling of the dining space. We then foraged for twigs, branches and other natural elements to bring each component to life. The table centrepieces were simple and inexpensive, using branches, twigs and cones, which we sprayed with gold paint and presented with green foliage. Finally, we hung thick panes
image.ie/brides
of glass onto the wall, onto which we wrote the table plan with chalk pens, to continue the frosty-cool vibe. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE LASER-CUT WALL ART? We wanted to enhance the bare-brick exposed walls, so played around with a snowflake wall feature – this was the result, which we made using stencilled paper and spray paint. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO PLAN AND EXECUTE THIS WEDDING? We started out chatting with Aoife and Niall about eight months prior. We would discuss ideas, likes and dislikes, then the finer details such as the venue, furniture, kitchen hire and how the day would flow – as the months went on, the process became more practical, implementing the ideas we had concocted together. WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE? The wedding took place in South Studios, which isn’t a purpose-built event space – there are always last-minute challenges when working in unusual places. This time there was no kitchen, so Hilary from Blas Catering cooked all the food in the Fumbally Kitchen around the corner, transferring everything to South Studios before serving.

f there’s one colour that’s synonymous with weddings, it’s white. Billy Idol even wrote a song about it. Yet, while you’re shockingly alternative if you don’t wear that white dress, it’s not a palette that’s often considered in bridal beauty. Too often, brides overwhelm what should be their wedding day glow with heavy nighttime eyes, or too much tan, when using the virginal hue in their beauty palette instead would bring light, youth and radiance.

The little details are what your guests will see while sitting at the table, so don’t stress about your style of chair, if it’s not quite right.

BRIDES READER EVENT An evening at Powerscourt Townhouse Centre WORDS KATE O’DOWD • PHOTOGRAPHS AGA MARU AT WHITE TEA
T
here’s nothing like the coming together of two like-minded brands. So when Powerscourt Townhouse asked us to host a reader evening in their gorgeous Dublin city shopping centre, we had a pretty good feeling it would be a hit. And it was… the perfect example of just what a good party should be: bridal shopping with the insider’s angle, in a magical setting, plus fizzy tipples, tasty treats and lots of girly banter. More than 150 Brides readers gathered for what felt like Night at the Museum, for an after-hours bridal shopping evening that had them giddy with the private-access thrill of it all… the place was buzzing with brides and their pals, all eager to garner some insider knowledge and nab themselves a bargain. By the way, did you know that this place is an actual wedding shopping hub? With bridal wear by Ciara Bridal, The Town Bride, Covet, Design Centre, Knightsbridge and Dawn Fitzgerald; flowers and

trimmings by The Garden and A. Rubanesque; beauty by Pzazz hair and make-up salon and Christoph Eye Couture; cakes by The Pepper Pot… and more jewellery and wedding gift treasure troves than you could shake an engagement ring at? Sure, you’d get it all here. Guests were treated to lots of delicious canapés, with bubbles and sweet treats to boot; a fashion show featuring key bridal looks from the centre’s stores; plus a behindthe-scenes interview session with three of Powerscourt’s leading wedding experts – Mark Grehan of The Garden on flowers; Robert Simmons of Pzazz on hair and beauty and The Town Bride’s Colm Flanagan on bridal dressing. A shopping frenzy ensued, with stores offering one-night-only discounts and in-store workshops… plus more bubble and treats, followed by the giveaway of a stupendous Twitter prize to one lucky winner. Ah, it was some night for one night…

e often wax lyrical about the importance of place when cooking up the perfect wedding storm and, for this event, we certainly practised what we preached. Having fallen in love with boutique Dublin hotel-of-the-moment The Dean, we virtually moved in for the duration of the issue (or at least for our I dream BIG shoot, p.158, and this glorious Sunday). We took with us some of our favourite wedding suppliers for a double sell-out event (it booked out so quickly, we had to put on an extra session in the morning), covering all things creative in wedding flowers, bridal styling and event design, and what followed was a happy day, complete with learning, laughing and quite a few cocktails (first ordered by a particularly celebratory group, with thirst quickly spreading through the ranks).
