A Truly Unique Experience!

IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY, Helios carried the Sun across the sky from east to west each day in his flying chariot. On Medina’s Champion Creek Trail, visitors now have the chance to travel through the heavens in the new Helios Project. This permanent outdoor exhibit begins behind Spokes Café at 406 South Broadway, at a 55” model Sun (one billionth actual size) and continues to the planets and other features of our solar system, which are also scaled accordingly in terms of size and distance. Guests will leave our solar system and continue along Champion Creek to the outer reaches of the universe. Visitors will learn fun and little-known facts about our solar system, Milky Way Galaxy, and the overall universe along this 1.7-mile experience.

The exhibits are broken down into three sections, with a scale that shrinks for each part. After the solar system, the scale is reduced to one hundred trillionth (1/100,000,000,000,000) actual size to allow visitors to travel from our solar system to the closest neighboring stars. The final section shrinks the scale a third time to show distances between galaxies. Each of the three major sections has an introduction placard which includes a QR code that connects to the corresponding page on the website.

While there are other parks in the world that take visitors through a scaled solar system, this is the only presentation that begins with the Sun and continues through our Milky Way galaxy and beyond. It is truly a unique experience for all ages!

The Helios Project was opened in August 2023 and is a gift to the community from Larry and Francine Johns of Medina. For more information, visit www.theheliosproject.space
