Christmas vacation is a wonderful time to bond with your family and can really capture the magical spirit of Christmas. By: Cheryl McKenzie

Visit a Christmas Market

See Winter Sports in Action

Make it a Destination

Have Christmas at Your House

The kids are sure to love all the fun festivities associated with Christmas markets and adults will enjoy the fabulous food and unique shopping. Don’t miss the GP Farmers Market Christmas Craft Fair and Sale held at the Crystal Centre, November 29 to December 1.

Why not meet up with members of your family at one central destination? Many people have vacation days to burn before the end of the year and kids have Christmas vacations from school and college. This allows everyone to gather together for the holidays, while taking advantage of either a great ski holiday or a tropical beach for the sun lovers.

Take a Christmas Cruise

Take advantage of activities both on-board and at ports to enjoy with your family. Several Christmas cruises have elaborate holiday activities, including Santa on board, holiday crafts and even New Year’s Eve parties.

Plan a more unique Christmas family outing by visiting a hockey arena. Start out your evening with dinner for family and friends at home over comfort food, to battle the winter chill, and then head to the Canada Games arena to cheer on the local Storm team.

Decorate your home for the holidays, and let your family members come to you. To make it more of a Christmas vacation, consider creating gift bags for your guests with local tourism brochures, area maps. You can also provide a list of possible daytrips or outings in your area, don’t forget the Gallery, Theatre or shopping stops! This is a great way to enjoy being a tourist in your own home town. No matter what you choose to do for the Holidays be sure to spend it with those who mean the most to you and it will be special.

ELEGANT SOIREES or H O T C H O C O L AT E PARTIES... Your Brand of Holiday Entertaining with Style. By: Deanna Kent-McDonald

A

sleigh ride or toboggan party for quality family time, or a casually elegant wine tasting party for those grown-up get-togethers can be reasonably simple and virtually stress-free to pull together. Planning a few things ahead is the way to go if you want a party with laughter, mingling and laid-back fun.

accent | 12

ON A HOT CHOCOLATE BUDGET

A

friendly, warm ambiance isn’t difficult to create even if you’re on a budget. Cathi Hobbins, owner of Urban Home, suggests that “during the holidays, less is more. A few dramatic focal points can be much more effective than decorating every shelf, table, nook and doorway, especially when your house is bustling with gifts and guests.” Indoors, a crackling fire or beautiful candles will “create a glowing warmth throughout your space. And don’t forget about the outside of your house – you want to make your guests feel welcome walking up to your door – let them anticipate the fun that awaits them inside.” Don’t forget the festive music and a homemade wreath on your door. Many holiday touches don’t have to drain the pocketbook. Think simplicity. Ranjit Safri at Liquor for Less suggests that during the season you stock your liquor cabinet with the triedand-true basics; and also have one or two “signature” festive drinks on-hand. Pomegranate liqueur and some of the flavored

vodkas are popular this year. “Have a few different liqueurs in your cabinet so that you can have fun mixing up a variety of martinis. Or, for an interactive experience, have each guest bring something over. You can get creative with your martini shaker.” If your guests are into wine, but a sit-down meal is too daunting or not your style, try a wine-tasting party and set up different wine-tasting stations in your home. Harmonize the wines with plates of meats and cheeses. Your company will love the fun - and you won’t be running off your feet. For a New Year’s party on a smaller budget, the less expensive bubbly can serve up a wonderful toast. And if you’re into simple chic rather than a fancy sit-down, adding a few easy-to-make appetizers and a tray of holiday treats will fit the bill. For a unique party, Josh Rankin from Woosabi suggests a sushi party (no raw fish required!). Have all the ingredients ready and allow your guests to create their own fabulous fare.

Sushi Tacos

Pomegranate Martini

Have your guests design their own ultimate sushi taco. Delicious ingredients + your guest’s creativity = fun, mingling & delicious fare.

INGREDIENTS FOR ABOUT 10 PEOPLE 1 Liter of sushi rice (white short grained rice) Sugar

INSTRUCTIONS Start by cooking the sushi rice (as per instructed). While it is cooking, dissolve 2 Tbsp of sugar into 200ml of rice vinegar. When the rice is cooked transfer it into a shallow pan. Add your vinegar solution and mix thoroughly. Allow the rice to cool for 15-20 min.

Cut the nori paper into quarters and set aside on a dish (make 2-3 Cucumbers, thinly sliced sure it keeps dry). Prepare the (seeds removed) in about 4 inch strips rest of the suggested ingredients or your own, and arrange Ripe avocados them neatly onto a tray. When Japanese mayo the rice is cool, transfer it into a Cooked or smoked fish bowl. Place a spoon into a cup of water. Your guests can now make Fruits (such as Kiwi or mangos) their own sushi ‘tacos’ by using the Nori (Seaweed Paper) spoon to place rice in the middle of a square nori paper and topping it with Any other ingredient you ingredients of their choice. would like…

ON A CHAMPAGNE BUDGET

S

erving fine wine and a sumptuous meal more your style? To achieve the extravagance you want, consider your needs ahead of time, and you’ll pull off a party to remember. Continuing a theme beyond your menu will ensure a special experience for your guests. If, for example, a Japanese meal is the order for the evening, (and you don’t want to cook it yourself), ask the team at Woosabi to create a memorable dinner for your guests and then follow the theme throughout your space with Sake, beautiful chopsticks for your place settings and decorative lanterns. And give a party favour and keepsake: Urban Home suggests a unique mercury glass ornament tied with a tiny organza bow at each place setting.

Attending a holiday function? Heather Forbes of Forbes and Friends says that “consumable, functional or absolutely beautiful” is a great way to show appreciation for the effort your hosts have put into planning a special get-together. Buy several small hostess gifts prior to the busy holiday rush and you’ll never go empty handed. No matter what your holiday party preferences are, be sure not to forget you during the hustle and bustle. Candace Lessoway, owner of Rejuve Salon & Spa encourages you to remember to give a gift to yourself. “You deserve a break when the numerous tasks of shopping, baking, and holiday functions begin to feel overwhelming. Remind yourself that taking the time to release some tension and invest in feeling good will spill over to everyone else around you.”

It’s So Much More Fun To Give

A hostess gift is a great way to show appreciation for a fabulous holiday invitation. ◄ A beautiful and unique hand-blown Christmas ornament.

> The Thymes Frasier Fur hand wash, candle, or dish washing liquid wrapped inside a holiday tea towel… smell like a pine forest. > A set of holiday mugs or cocktail plates. > Ceramic dip chiller with dip seasonings.

Tips to De-Stress During the Holidays H2O: Even in all the rushing around, get your water! Proper hydration makes your skin appear brighter and smoother.

NAIL CARE: Using a base coat and top coat can keep your polish looking nice from party to party.

LIMIT THE HOLIDAY SPIRITS: Alcohol wipes out Vitamin B which your skin needs for moisture retention and repair.

MASSAGE: Treat yourself. Massage breaks up scar tissue, loosens stiff joints, assists in blood flow, and will make you feel wonderful!

PEDICURES: Rushing around? A pedicure involves so much more than nice nail polish - it includes total foot care, and is a step towards healthy feet.

MEN LOVE SPAS: Make it a holiday ‘couples’ experience. Once they’ve experienced a pedicure or massage, men wonder why they haven’t done it before!

▼ AROMATHERAPY: This ancient form of healing uses the essential oils of plants to affect the body, mind and spirit.

Decorating Tips on a Hot Chocolate Budget ► On a mantel, piano, or coffee table, arrange fresh greenery (mix pine, cedar or spruce boughs). These items can be purchased from a floral shop or found in the bush during a fun family outing. Place 15 to 20 tea lights in little glass cups and some silver ornamental balls within the greens to add some glam and sparkle.

> Light the path to your door! After shoveling the sidewalk, make 4” indents in the snow bank every 12 inches with a bottle or tin can. Drop a tea light or votive candle (in a holder) into each “snow cup” and light them before your guests arrive. > Bird ornaments are huge this season - add a few to the wreath on your front door (live greenery stays fresh in our climate) and finish it off with a beautiful organza bow.

◄ To set a gorgeous table, use festively designed paper napkins or a plain one rolled up with red raffia. Tuck in a tiny sprig of fresh holly.

> Purchase inexpensive Christmas balls in various sizes to match your décor (3 colours work well) and place them in tall cylinder glass vases of varying heights.

Decorating Tips For The Champagne Budget ▼ Combine ivory roses, seasonal greenery and clusters of soft ivory feathers in a footed pewter or aluminum bowl for a dramatic effect on your dining table.

> Place ceramic or cast iron fire burners on both sides of your front entrance. Arrange fresh cedar and pine boughs around the bases and then light the canisters of alcohol gel just before guests are expected to arrive. They burn for approximately 3 hours. > Group different heights of the same colour pillar candles in a large, oval glass hurricane, or on a large mirrored tray. Add a few sprigs of fresh greenery, some antique glass ornaments, and you have a stunning centerpiece for a table or a mantel. > Place a row of mercury glass candle stands (different heights) down the centre of your dining table. Use the same colour pillar on each. Sprinkle a handful of crystals or tiny mirrored ornaments between each candle stand. Decorating tips from Cathi Hobbins & the Urban Home team

Unlimited opportunities when you lace up your skates by: Dori Mark

S

kating in Grande Prairie has become a very popular activity for all ages, genders and levels, from recreational to competitive, there is a lot to offer. Not only in the winter season but all year round, hockey or figure skating is available during their regular season plus clinics, tournaments or competitions - we have it all! Why skate – maybe it’s the exhilaration one gets from the speed they develop over the years – for figure skaters it could be the accomplishment of a newly learnt jump that is landed perfectly – for hockey players maybe it’s the personal satisfaction of scoring that first goal. Whatever it is, it brings a yearning to go back. Along with the gratification an athlete in any skating sport has it’s a great way to keep our children active, and, what about the proud feeling parents have when their children successfully complete something they have been working so hard on. If you or your child have never tried skating before there are many options to getting started. You need to learn the basics first before you can venture into any skating sport – so join one of our local Learn to Skate Programs. The Grande Prairie Skating Club offers a variety of daytime and evening programs as well as a Saturday program. As well, Olana Vigen runs daytime programs. For those adult skaters – you can sign up for the newly developed Saturday morning program also offered by the Grande Prairie Skating Club. When you first go out there or

send your child out on the ice for the first time – don’t get discouraged if they aren’t gliding across the ice smoothly after the first day. They need to learn that the ice is cold and hard and develop at their own pace. Sometimes we tend to forget that any new sport activity can bring a sense of fear to many so let the beginner progress at their own pace and eventually the fear will be gone, they’ll be standing on their own two feet, gliding across the ice. Remember, every day that a skater goes out there and does what they do best on those two thin blades of steel is a day they deserve a medal. It does not take a competition or a tournament, just the day to day personal satisfaction of a task accomplished is reward enough. You can spend many hours fine tuning your newly learnt skills as Grande Prairie offers various skating activities – probably the leader in skating activity is hockey – Grande Prairie Minor Hockey has over 900 players ages 5 to 18. The Grande Prairie Skating Club has over 350 skaters taking lessons throughout the year. There are also the GP Wheelers and GP A’s Senior Hockey team and of course the Storm Team! Sledge Hockey is also a growing sport that enables wheelchair athletes to enjoy hockey as well. There’s also speed skating, shinny hockey and the Old Timer Leagues and Commercial Leagues and if that’s not enough there is public skating year round at the Coca Cola

accent | 18

Centre or during the fall/winter season at the Dave Barr Arena. Also in the winter one can enjoy many of our local outdoor rinks or the local pond down at Muskoseepi Park as well as Evergreen Park. If you or your child are contemplating taking a whirl at any skating sport – drop by the arena and watch any of our skating groups. The Grande Prairie Skating Club and GP Minor Hockey offices are at the Coca Cola Centre and for any of the other skating sports you can find their contact information in our local Community Connections available at any of the City facilities. Every other weekend you will probably come across a tournament at any of our local arenas along with regular weekly practices. In the summer there are a variety of hockey schools and clinics. The Grande Prairie Skating Club runs daily sessions during the winter season,

as well as a spring and summer school. March 28-30, 2008 they will be hosting their annual competition, the Peace Region Invitational at the Canada Games Arena, that brings over 350 skaters to the city. It’s a good time to see the possibilities for anyone new to the sport. As well Ben Ferreira – men’s national competitor and medalist will be paying our City a visit the weekend of November 17th and 18th to work with skaters in the Peace Region to fine tune their skills. This winter speed skating, figure skating and hockey athletes will be busy preparing to go to the Alberta Winter Games in Medicine Hat and the Arctic Winter Games in Yellowknife, NWT in February and March respectively.

THE MANY FACES OF CHRISTMAS

Traditions: New & Old By: Lionel Frey

I

t’s approaching, probably quicker than you were prepared for this year. Amazing, but Christmas is almost here once again, and for many people the season means many different things. There are the tried and true traditions, some of which are carried out almost unconsciously, while yearafter-year, many start their own traditions that reflect the spirit of the holiday.

Of course, the face of Christmas has indelibly become that of Father Christmas himself, Santa Claus. Santa Claus, as we all know, was based on a real person, Saint Nicholas. The Dutch translation of Saint Nicholas is “Sinterklaas”, but since many people at the time thought Sinterklaas was just too difficult for kids to manage phonetically, they sounded it out and Santa Claus was the alternative with which they landed. It stuck and the character has been celebrated since Nicholas’ day as a Christian leader from Myra, which is modern-day Turkey, in 4th Century AD. Perhaps based on his origins, it’s no coincidence that turkey is the main course used to celebrate the holiday. Saint Nicholas was said to be a generous soul, and always wanted to give money to the poor. The story goes that one day he climbed the roof of a house and dropped a bag of money down a chimney for some unsuspecting, but fortuitous family. As it turns out, the gift landed in the sock of a girl who had hung her apparel by the fire to dry, and this is how the legend of Santa scaling down a chimney to deliver presents was born. It’s actually quite fortunate that Nicholas didn’t decide to cavalierly wing his gift through the bay window of the living room of this family, as Christmas could have in turn become one expensive holiday. Still, it was that spirit of generosity that no doubt spawned many of the old traditions and some of the newer customs people have developed over the years to pay homage to that history.

Sending Christmas cards, for example, was and remains a way of bringing the caring element to the season. Starting in 1840 with the advent of the first Penny Post public postal system in Britain, Christmas cards were soon produced in large numbers and have become virtually a staple to Christmas since the mid1800’s. Today, email has made a bit if a dent in the Christmas Card practice, but not to the extent you might expect. People still appreciate receiving that card in the mail and holding it in their hand, even if it is from someone who rambles on about their summer vacation near the Grand Canyon that July.

Other traditions about which you may have wondered: Mistletoe: Considering that mistletoe is actually a parasite, somebody obviously decided it was the appropriate vegetation to share a kiss underneath. There are two types of mistletoe, one being a parasite that grows on trees from New Jersey to Florida, and European mistletoe, which is considered poisonous. So, that kiss that your goofy co-worker wants to trap you into at the company Christmas party is, as you suspected, the kiss of death. Further, in ancient times it was witnessed that mistletoe would often appear on trees or branches where birds had left droppings. Pucker up! Where the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe came from started in Greece during marriage ceremonies where the dung was thought to have life-giving power and later, in Scandinavia, where mistletoe was considered a plant of peace under which warring factions, including spouses, could make-up and resolve their differences. Christmas Carols: Christmas carols date back hundreds of years and were normally sung around the winter season in gen-

accent | 32

eral, but became associated after a time with Christmas specifically. One interesting point of trivia about carols is that in 2003, the Austrian Trade Union Federation claimed that the ongoing playing of Christmas carols in shopping malls was no less than psychological terror. The claim was dismissed, but by the end of the holidays, I’m sure some people are thinking the same thing. Boxing Day: The origins of Boxing Day are not 100 per cent clear. Churches in the Middle Ages would open up their alms box and give the donations made by parishioners to the needy in the area the day after Christmas. This is one explanation of where the day received its name. Another is that wealthier families gave their servants boxes or gifts the day after Christmas. Whoever coined the name couldn’t have planned it better, with the myriad of boxes of well-meaning expressions of generosity being returned to retail outlets in gale-force fashion. Whatever the tradition, and however you celebrate Christmas, don’t let the show undermine the meaning of the plot. This is something Maureen Boyd of Grande Prairie stands firmly behind. Boyd recalls a recent Christmas where she and a group of friends ignored the hype of the season and did something that was simply the right thing to do.

“Last year, a number of friends got together and baked Christmas goods for friends of ours that were going through some difficult times as a result of serious health issues,” says Boyd. “We thought this was the least we could do for them, as Christmas is a time for friends and family and the last thing you need to be worried about are the little things like this when you’re going through some serious personal issues.” For Boyd, it has never been about the formality of Christmas, although some of the traditions can be fun. For her, Christmas means the same as it does to many other people and that is a time for friends, family, and even good deeds for perfect strangers. “I think there are a lot of people that do something special for others at Christmas, but it isn’t necessarily noticed all the time. Sometimes the little things make the biggest difference because everybody can do something on a smaller scale and, yet, when you look at the collective results of all of these smaller deeds, it’s quite significant.” So whether it’s a long, storied tradition that you have no idea where it came from, or a unique practice you have personally developed to commemorate the season, let’s hope that this year is a special one for you.

Christmas around the world: In Finland, everyone cleans their houses for the three holy days of Christmas, which are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. College students in Finland no doubt just pick up the big pieces by hand rather than vacuum. On Christmas Eve in Finland, people eat rice porridge and plum fruit juice in the morning and many families will visit cemeteries the evening of December 24th and place a candle on the graves of family. In Germany, Father Christmas, or Der Weihnachtsmann (not to be confused with Der W%%#$st**@%^m#*%, or a sneeze), brings presents in the late afternoon on the 24th and rings a bell for everyone to come into the room and open their gifts then, as opposed to Christmas morning. On Christmas Day, carp or goose are cooked as the main course. Did you know Latvians were the first to decorate a Christmas tree? They also believe in Latvia that Father Christmas delivers presents on each of the 12 days of Christmas, starting on December 24th. There are some in North America that believe presents should be delivered each day for 12 days, but realize that the credit on Mom and Dad’s Visa and MasterCard only extend into six. accent | 33

DOWNTOWN

GRANDE PRAIRIE

DOWNTOWN U P DAT E By Cheryl McKenzie and Helen Rice

T

he leaves have met their demise for another year and soon the ground will be covered in snow if it hasn’t already by the time you read this. The change in seasons always brings new challenges and experiences to being downtown. Fortunately we have the hardworking folks who volunteer their time and skills into making Downtown the place to be.

PROMOTIONS COMMITTEE

The Promotions Committee is committed to attracting people from all over the region to the Downtown through different events, attractions, promotions and cooperative marketing. This summer was the inaugural event called “Duck Days” which replaced the long standing Stompede Days. “Duck Days” will become a signature event partnered with the Grande Prairie Roteract Club to celebrate the Annual Duck Days. Turning the event into an annual ‘community celebration’ on Main Street. With winter coming up, there are two main events that draw the crowds to Downtown. The first is happening November 16 from 6 pm – 12 am. Vegas Night kicks off the Season’s celebrations and shopping. But if Vegas night doesn’t put you into the Christmas spirit perhaps you should take in the Santa Claus Parade on November 25. The Santa Parade delights both young and old and the provision of on-street Christmas music adds to everyone’s holiday enjoyment. These events have become Regional events, drawing visitors from all over the Peace Country.

BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE

The Beautification Committee achieved quite a feather in their hat, or should I say a flower in their bonnet by contributing to the ‘Communities in Bloom’ successful bid for 5 Blooms in 2007. Anyone who comes Downtown is sure to be impressed with the bevy of baskets and blooms that adorn the streets and boule-

vards. It is hard to miss the colourful array of flowers that line the roads. Often the City is given credit (or criticism) for the flowers, but the truth is that the entire management and expense for the beautification of Downtown is paid for by a Downtown tax that only Downtown businesses pay annually. The proceeds of the tax go directly to the Downtown Association for development and maintenance of the Downtown core. It is important to continue to develop, implement and maintain physical improvements to the downtown streetscape to make it an enjoyable place to visit. These include adequate seating, outstanding seasonal decorations and encouraging everyone to play their part in keeping downtown clean and litter free as part of their mandate.

MEMBER AFFAIRS

The Member Affairs Committee develops and implements programs that will enhance the exposure and overall image of the Downtown to both members and the public at large. Workshops and member information sessions as well as the annual Member Appreciation BBQ are just part of their initiatives.

STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS

The Committee develops and implements strategic improvements to the core area. Long range planning and developing a vision that ensures downtown remains a hub of economic activity that encourages growth of existing businesses and encourages new investment is part of their mandate. After the flowers are gone and the events are over, there is still the day to day operations of the Downtown Association. These tasks include everything from snow removal, parking, traffic flow, crime, and all of the other less glamorous tasks that are addressed by the Downtown Association.

COPING WITH THE SNOW

By Mary Nutting, South Peace Regional Archives

S

eeing that snow removal was an issue in the civic election this fall got me to thinking, “What did they do about heavy snowfalls in Grande Prairie’s early years?”

The first stop in my research was the Environment Canada website where I clicked on ‘Past Weather’ and searched the ‘Climate Data Online’ for Grande Prairie, Alberta. A ‘customized search’ told me that on November 17, 1932 they had 30 cm of snow in one day, that in December 1933 they had a record of 95 cm in one month (with the temperature -50 for days), and that in 1947 there was 225 cm in one year.

gone down to City Hall and looked through the early by-laws for the first one about snow removal, but from photographs in the archives, I knew what I would find. Citizens were expected to clear the sidewalks in front of their homes and businesses long before the town was expected to clear the streets. Part of the problem lies in the design of today’s vehicles. Think of the high clearance and narrow tires of the early cars and trucks; they would have traveled through the snow like our modern SUVs.

My next stop was www.ourfutureourpast.ca to read what the newspapers of the day had to say about those record snowfalls. I discovered that no one complained. After all that snow, there was not one word—not in the headlines, or the editorial, or the letters to the editor. But the pussywillows out in Badheart in January 1934 made front page headlines! That means either the town did such a good job of snow removal that no-one had anything to complain about, or people had no expectations of the streets being cleaned. I could have

Then again, maybe we are so hurried that we can’t enjoy the snow—only fret about how it’s slowing us down. This year, if it snows so much the cars won’t move, let’s all take the day off!
