HOMESPUN Handmade treasures and old-fashioned service in the heart of the city.

Written By Dymphny Dronyk Photography by Ramsay & Winsor Photography

accent | 10

There’s a buzz of energy in the Downtown core lately. It seems like every month something new is happening. New businesses, renovations, festivals, art installations, a bustling Farmers’ Market and most notably, lots of foot traffic. Believe it or not, there are over 400 different businesses tucked into the handful of streets that comprise the original heart of the city. With furniture boutiques, fine clothing shops, spas, speciality stores and interior decorators, the Downtown has the upscale, funky flavour of Whyte Avenue in Edmonton, or Kensington in Calgary. People come to shop – but also just to soak up some of that hip, urban buzz.

I

n a city that is burgeoning in all directions and where the big box store power centre just keeps sprawling, the Downtown is enjoying its revitalization, inspired by the collective ethic of its merchants to create a space that is unique and intimate, where there is time for old-fashioned values such as good service.

town such as Grandview Country Store and Unique Gallery, thereby providing weeklong access for their customers.

The Downtown has also attracted an amazing number of merchants who offer handmade, one-of-a-kind or imported, speciality items. A Saturday stroll that starts at the Farmers’ Market (corner of 101st Avenue and 101st Street) and then meanders along the Main Street of 100th Avenue offers up many riches and inspirations. The Farmers’ Market, with the best parking in the Downtown, has long been home to artists and craftspeople as well as farmers and market gardeners, bakers and chefs. The Market is like a giant quilt of colours, scents and sensations tucked under one roof. Visual artists, photographers, furniture makers, jewellers, musicians and fibre artists all call the Market home. A number of the members (for example, The Primitive Lane that creates hand crafted primitives, candles and soaps and A Couple of Old Barnboards that specializes in barn wood furniture) now also sell their products in a few of the specialty stores Down-

There’s a real sense of community that draws customers and merchants alike. “I think people come to the Market because more and more, they like to know where their food comes from. It makes them feel good to know that the meat comes from a natural environment,” explains Eldine Kjemhus. Glendean Farms sells bison inspired pottery and barbecue accessories in addition to a wide range of their marvellous bison products. All of which are naturally grown and are chemical free. (Glendean Farms’ bison products can now also be found at Farmers Markets in Calgary as well.) “I started just for fun” laughs Liliana Tornambe as she models one of her beautiful handmade shawls. “My niece encouraged me to make more and I thought I would try it at the Market, to see how it would go. None are ever the same. Each shawl is inspired by the material. It speaks to me – it’s very spontaneous.” Two years and many shawls later, Shalle by Li is a fixture at the Market and at various trade shows throughout the year. “I love the atmosphere. It is a very supportive community here. Everyone helps everyone else.”

Tammy Schneider of Creative Candy Bouquet explains that for her the Market is the best of both worlds – she can be a stayat-home mom and still have a marketplace for her venture. Schneider has created her exuberant candy alternatives to floral arrangements guided by months of on-line research. Wanting to protect her artistic integrity she did not buy in to a franchise and has also worked hard to find all Canadian suppliers for her

materials. Business is great. She keeps busy with customers at the Market two days a week, and also through custom orders for birthdays, showers, weddings, and other special events. Over on Main Street, even the warm brick exterior of the Grandview Country Store on the northwest corner of 100th Street and a 100th Avenue hearkens back to a by-gone era. Inside the cozy space, every nook is filled with handmade wares. Rustic barn wood furniture and birdhouses, wrought iron, willow wreathes, baskets, pastel quilts, and playful primitives (hearts, stars, moons) enough to fulfill any theme or inspiration. “You don’t have to like country décor” owner Sheryl Anderson says. “There’s something here for all seasons, for all tastes. I have local women who make the signs, the wreathes, the birdhouses and many of the primitives. And then there’s Doug’s Woodwork and the Sietsma’s barn wood furniture too. People are making these things with their own hands, putting all their heart into it. There are a lot of hours and care and pride going into each item. I think that authenticity really matters. Here you’ll never find exactly the same pillow or quilt or birdhouse twice because it’s not coming off a production line.” “One of my local suppliers, Charlene from The Primitive Lane even created our own line of candles. We call it Grandview Spice. It’s a very relaxing scent.” Charlene Wray of The Primitive Lane enthuses about both her craft and being in the Downtown. “There’s such a sense of inspiring and helping each other” she explains. “And it is so much fun. I get a lot of joy out of seeing people’s reactions to my work, especially over the faux food candles like the banana split, or the Fruit Loops in a bowl. They’re incredulous because it really looks and smells like the real thing.” Anderson believes her Grandview Country Store’s success has a lot to do with our collective longing for a simpler life. “A lot of

the things in here remind people of their grandparents’ time. I think we want to bring some of that peace and history into our homes. People like to stay and visit. That’s the thing with shopping downtown. It’s a real community down here. Our customers like it that we know them by name, that there’s no rush. Our slogan is ‘enter as strangers, leave as friends’.” Carol Sietsma, co-owner of A Couple of Old Barnboards, one of Grandview’s primary artisans, echoes that sentiment. “We started this business just because Hedzer, my husband, always loved woodworking; he just loves working with his hands. And we thought it was such a shame that all those beautiful old buildings were just getting ripped down because people thought they were in the way of the combine, or whatever.” “So he started taking down buildings for people and saving the wood. And it’s really taken off. We keep busy. He keeps coming up with new designs and improving on his techniques.”

started canning… and I ended up with 800 jars of preserves that first summer. Well, I had to do SOMETHING with them” she chuckles “so I came to the Market.” A seemingly indefatigable source of energy, Laurel has now gone on to create Grande Prairie’s newest eatery, serving lunches and desserts in her café in addition to the hundreds of jars of jams, jellies and pickles that glint and wink from the shelves. “People are looking for a purer product,” she explains. “Our product doesn’t have any additives. We buy local fruits and veggies and just use sugar and Certo, just like grandma used to do it. And it’s a real family affair. My children are all involved, so is my husband – you have to have help when you’re peeling 60 lbs of carrots at a time. “People come from all over for my preserves. My jars have gone as far as New Zealand. There are so many stories. I even made up a booklet of all the stories.” “I had one lady tell me she comes here just to get a littl e beauty treat for her eyes. Magical moments happen in the shop.”

“It’s one way to preserve the heritage of the West you know.” Sietsma adds thoughtfully. “The East is full of old brick buildings. They’ll keep standing. But here we have the elevators and the granaries and if they’re all torn down, what have we got left from the past? People like to take a little piece of that history home with them.” Memories of the past can also come in little jars full of delicious explosions of taste. Laurel Kirsch of Laurel’s Peace Country Preserves, whose dynamic presence lit up the Farmers’ Market for 17 years before she decided to branch out and open up a store on Main Street in addition to her Market kiosk, started pickling because she was bored. “I’d been a realtor for 17 years and then one day I decided that was it and I just quit. But then I was sitting around at home and I just couldn’t stand it. So I

It’s the stories that can be shared about the products at Forbes & Friends boutique that are a draw for owner Heather Forbes’ customers. “I love telling people fun stories – like that our journals can also be found at a little gift shop on the Left Bank in Paris. I think it’s the charm that keeps our customers coming back. I had one lady tell me she comes here just to get a little beauty treat for her eyes. Magical moments happen in the shop.” And beauty abounds with each display in the store presenting like a work of art. Featuring local fibre art, photography and jewellery Forbes & Friends (at the East end of 100th Avenue) is also one of the official retailers for the members of the distinguished Alberta Craft Council. Artists from all over Alberta create high calibre fine craft from visual art to pottery and glassware, much of which can now be found right in our own Downtown. “Because I am a craftsperson myself I understand some of the challenges,” Forbes explains. “I wanted to create a space where fine craft was celebrated, and also where you could find more worldly, high quality gift items. I think small, independent businesses belong in the Downtown. We’re all helping each other by being in the same area. There’s a wonderful woman-centric,

generous attitude of mentorship down here.”

The Downtown has its quirks – but the home of an international publishing company? Yes, it’s true! Harnessing the wonders of high tech, Red Pill Press publishes quality books by authors from Alberta and around the world. Red Pill is located in the back of its sister company, the Rabbit Hole Bookstore (at 10020 – 100 Avenue) and sells its collection locally and internationally via its website (redpillpress.com). Recent books produced by Red Pill Press include the annual anthologies that feature the winners of the Grande Prairie Public Library writing contest. The Rabbit Hole has a wide collection of new and used books, comics, graphic novels and collectables, quality vinyl for audiophiles, hard-to-find cd’s, and additionally the store specializes in showcasing the recordings of Peace Country musicians.

Creativity and chutzpah and their own love for the arts and Downtown culture motivated young entrepreneurs Dan Wourms and Tara Campeau to take Unique Gallery (just east of CIBC) back to its renowned roots – by celebrating local artists and artisans. “Some of the artists we carry have been featured at Unique almost as long as I’ve been alive,” Dan Wourms explains. “Artists like Suzanne Sandboe or Bibi Clement.”

With a ton of energy and a savvy and expertise that belies their years, the co-owners are restoring Unique Gallery to its historic place as one of Grande Prairie’s only artist-run, private galleries. “It seems like every week another artist finds us. There’s a long history and to showcase their work. We help them get ready for shows behind each item in the store. “We have things you just could by giving them a break on their framing or by helping them to not find anywhere else,” claims owner Pearl Wilson, “Right now understand the business side of being an artist.” I have a wedding dress from the mid 1800’s, for example.” “We’re here to build a reciprocal relationship within the community,” Campeau adds. “There are so many talented people in the Peace. We’re collaborating with the Prairie Art Gallery, the art clubs and societies and with our peers. We’re organizing art shows. We want the store to be a resource for the community. Response so far has been phenomenal – both from customers and artists.” Unique Gallery carries visual arts including oils, acrylics, watercolours and photography; as well as a wide range of giftware and home decorating items including pottery; hand-blown and fused glasswork; fabric art; woodcarvings; alpaca products; cards, books and more.

“I think people come to the Downtown because of the personal service – you still get waited on here. We’re all privately owned and operated and we care. We help people find discontinued china and glassware pieces, for example. That one bowl that’s missing from the set you got from grandma. We also help people understand the value of what they have at home.” From the hands and hearts of the artisans and proprietors, to a cherished spot in your home – Grande Prairie’s Downtown shops are taking retail back to the fundamentals of good business. Homespun – it’s the human touch.

Tara Campeau and Dan Wourms are proud to bring Unique Gallery back to its roots and celebrate local artists.

S

ome visitors ducking into Forbes and Friends Downtown boutique pass right by the exquisite fine crafts and pottery displays. They appreciate the colourful fabric art, original ornaments and jewellery, but on this day, they’re looking for Garth, the resident dog. “We find him to be very therapeutic” explains Heather Forbes, owner of both the boutique and dog, a brindled (gray and tawny brown with patches) greyhound, a retired Wisconsin track racer. “People come in after a bad day and say: ‘I’m here to see Garth’.” Housing a superfast canine in a store full of breakables and finery does not wreak the havoc we might envision. While greyhounds’ sprinting ability allows for reaching high speeds in little time, the breed is known to be quiet and laid-back. “A regular couch potato,” Forbes jokes, nodding to Garth. “He’ll head to the front of the store later on, and if the sun is out, he may lounge near the window.”

Forbes adopted him three years ago through a Calgary-based rescue operation. She had never owned a dog, and her fondness for “big ones” made it unlikely she ever would. Then she met a friend’s three greyhounds, and fell in love with the breed. Not only are these hounds able to reach speeds of 6070 kmph and then lie about the house all day, they do not sweat, have no doggy smell, and are generally tolerated by people who are allergic to other pets. Hardly the bull in the china shop then. However, outside the store, Forbes does keep Garth on-leash. Like any greyhound worth his papers, he will spot (and follow, till he catches up with) a moving object from nearly a kilometre away. Forbes and assistant Betty Grunau’s only in-store concern regarding Garth involves food. “We’re the ones who break things. With him, it’s our lunches we lose.”

GOOD FUN & GOOD SOUP TOO! The Grande Prairie Curling Club

By: Dymphny Dronyk

With leagues, bonspiels, lessons and activities that cater to a wide range of age groups and skills levels perhaps it is this combination of convenience and the friendly, small town roots of curling that is driving the Grande Prairie Curling Club to new successes.

I think the curling club is the best-kept secret in Grande Prairie,” Manager Andrea Ferris says with a proud grin. “We have something happening here all the time and now that the old church has been moved from the corner (at 99th Ave and 120 St) everyone can finally see the building. We just had our registration weekend and it was amazing how many new people we had.” The Grande Prairie Curling Club has been located in the downtown core for about 30 years and has always had a loyal following. Now curling which continues to be popular in most rural communities is making a comeback in the heart of our city. With a facelift in the works and new initiatives such as its popular daily soup and sandwich bar in the Lounge, large and affordable special event or conference facilities, as well as its mixed Corporate League every other Friday, the Club is abuzz with renewal. Curling came west with the railroads. After the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885, the CPR’s immigration efforts, particularly in Great Britain, Europe and the Ukraine helped open up the West. And as settlers moved from Eastern Canada and the United States to join those from overseas, curling tagged along and became a staple of the new villages and towns. It was a sporting activity that helped alleviate the long winters. Numerous plaques inside the Grande Prairie Curling Club date back as far as 1922, and include a strong focus on women’s clubs too. Today’s Club also follows in those proud footsteps by hosting champion curler and certified coach Renee Sonnenberg’s Pure Curling Academy which provides both private and team lessons. “The Downtown Community has been hugely supportive,” says Ferris, “which is why we decided to open the Extra End Pub up

every day from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm for our soup and sandwich bar which is outstanding. Downtown business people know that even if they only have a few minutes they can come here for a quick bite. It’s all home-cooking and we cater to the realities of time. We even have ‘grab & go’ containers. We all have to continue to work together to keep the downtown viable.” Ferris continues “We’re always looking for new ways to be open to the community. We’re a real family friendly space. We have the seniors who come twice a week and the kids after school and everything in between. Grande Prairie is such a busy place that I think people are just really happy to find a fun, safe, recreational space. And it is great exercise as well!” Curling season at the Club starts at the beginning of October and runs through till the end of March, when playoff season begins. The Oilmen’s Bonspiel is the last game – played April 1st to 4th. Leagues run every day of the week and include Ladies’ Leagues, a Mixed League, Men’s Leagues, a Senior’s drop-in League, a Social League and an after school program run together with the Junior Elks and schools all across the city. Fees include snacks and a year-end party. The Club is also pleased to host bonspiels earlier than anyone else. (Check the website for full details and times. www.grandeprairiecurlingclub.com) The Grande Prairie Curling Club has also hosted many exciting events including the Ladies’ Provincials – Williams Moving and Storage Scott’s Tournament of Hearts (2007) and The Masters (spring 2008). In December 2010 it will host the Subway Alberta Junior Provincials and in April 2011 it will host the Investors Group Mixed Provincials. Good fun, a friendly small town atmosphere and some great competitions – it’s not hard to imagine the Grande Prairie Curling Club flourishing for many years to come!

BRIDGE SUPPORTS:

(Wired Bras and) Breast Cancer By Jody Farrell

S

omewhere in Grande Prairie’s city hall, a frustrated engineer spent the last several days in September figuring out how to safely string some 1,000 bras across two bridges along the city’s main (99 and 100) Avenues.

“I hear he’s pretty mad at me.” smiles Alison Gustafson, owner of Victoria’s Attic, the downtown lingerie store whose breast cancer fundraiser Bras Across the Bridge was responsible for the engineer’s ‘support’ dilemma. It was one of many The engineer’s efforts, burgeoning ef for ts in along with those of Victhe cross-Canada ‘think toria’s Attic and local rapink’ campaign to cast dio station Q99 did not a bright light on an go unnoticed. Wednesother wise frightening day, October 1st, Bras phenomenon. Across the Bridge kicked off a month-long fundraiser whose entire proceeds went directly to the local Grande Prairie Cancer Clinic. It was one of many burgeoning efforts in the cross-Canada ‘think pink’ campaign to cast a bright light on an otherwise frightening phenomenon. An estimated 22,300 women developed breast cancer last year, and about 5,300 of them will die from it. Its cause and cure are unknown. Apart from being female, age is its single most important risk factor as the leader of cancer death in young women ages 20 - 49.

coloured forms contain soft, clear gel and are convincingly real-looking. They stick to the body and can be worn with or without a bra. “A lot of women feel for the first time (after trying on a prosthesis) they have a breast again,” comments Victoria’s Attic store manager Lylie Park. They also stock a post-surgery camisole, a comfortable, attractive cotton garment that can be stepped into so as to avoid having to raise one’s arms. The camisole’s fitted design also protects the drain inserted into the breast during surgery, keeping it close to the body and preventing the catching or pulling of the tube. New privacy laws restrict Grande Prairie’s cancer clinic from sharing details of its patients. This often makes Victoria’s Attic the only link between agencies like the Canadian Cancer Society and Alberta Aids for Daily Living and women seeking information. Apart from discreet service for post-surgery customers, Park, along with other Victoria’s Attic staff who are trained in fitting prosthetics, pass along information to cancer patients looking for answers, funding, or places to stay while receiving chemotherapy and radiation. Funds raised in the Bras Across the Bridge campaign went towards the purchase of a chemotherapy chair for the Grande Prairie Cancer Clinic.

Victoria’s Attic opened 15 years ago and specialized in undergarments and fitted bras. Gustafson, whose store is located in a renovated century-old style house at 9810 - 100 Avenue, began researching breast prosthetics nine years ago after being approached by women following their mastectomy surgery. The store now carries a variety of prosthetics, each fitted to the individual so that size, weight and drape of the simulated breast suits her build. The flesh-

CURLING in the 1920’s

By Mary Nutting, South Peace Regional Archives

urling was serious business in the 1920s, as we see from these professional portraits of the champion rinks around 1925. The first club in Grande Prairie had been formed in 1917, and an account of this meeting in the Grande Prairie Herald gives an insight into the enthusiasm behind the sport of curling. On Monday, October 17, 1917, a meeting was held at the Grande Prairie Hotel, “advocating the immediate formation of a club and the purchase of property, on which to locate a suitable rink.” The group appointed a financial committee of M.W. Eagar and A.C. McEachern, and a purchasing committee of G.E. Fraser, L.C. Porteous, and D.A. Minchin. The committees were to report Thursday night (three nights later), “when it is hoped everything will be in readiness for the commencement of work on the building at an early date.” “It was the unanimous opinion of those present that a curling rink is a long felt want, and will be of assistance in wiling away the long winter evenings. Persons interested with any good suggestions for the promotion of the winter sport are urgently requested to be present at the meeting on Thursday evening at the Grande Prairie Hotel.” The Herald did not report the building of the rink, and it appears that the Curling Club was invited to share an ice surface with hockey teams at the Wapiti Rink. However it was, curling competitions began, and three months later two rinks from Grande Prairie attended the bonspiel in Edmonton. By 1920, curling draws and bonspiel news were a regular front page feature. It is not clear what year the two teams shown here took the championships, but the ladies rink is identified as Mrs. Pratt, Mrs. Journey, Mrs. Mantle, and Mrs. Archibald. Anyone who can identify the men on the winning rink is asked to call the Archives at 780-830-5105. The photographs were taken by Field’s Studio. C.W. Field had been born in Ohio and trained in an artist’s studio in New York, but moved to Alberta with his wife Edith in 1910. After operating a photograph studio in Ponoka for a few years, in 1918 they filed on land in the Bezanson area and opened the studio on Richmond Avenue in 1922. After the Great Depression began in 1929, he closed the studio — no-one could afford expensive portraits — and returned to farming. Clarence Field’s excellent photographs are featured in The Peace: A History in Photographs, a new coffee table book by Don Petit available at the Grande Prairie Museum. accent | 38
