A C U LT U R A L C E N T R E FOR GRANDE PRAIRIE MAKE IT GRAND! By Robert Steven
D
espite the recent collapse of The Prairie Art Gallery roof, there is still a great deal of good news to celebrate for the historic site, The Gallery and for culture in Grande Prairie. That good news takes the form of a 50,000 square foot, 2 storey building, with a full underground parkade beneath it. The historic significance of the site will be a primary and defining feature of the new architecture. It will be the new home of the Grande Prairie Public Library, and it will expand The Prairie Art Gallery to more than double its traditional size. Both The Library and The Gallery are growing as part of this project and much of the discussion of the new facility has focused on The Gallery’s need for more exhibition and storage space, The Library’s need for more seating and programming space and both institutions’ need for barrier free accessibility. It is important to remember that these are not really the institutions’ needs, they are the needs of our community. If you wonder why we, as a community, need for The Library and The Gallery to grow, you just have to look around for the answer. It is because the city has grown so much and is continuing to grow. This new building will ensure that the children (and adults) of Grande Prairie and the surrounding area will have easy access to some of humanity’s finest creations: works of art and books. Grande Prairians wishing to search out new and diverse cultural experiences in the new Library and Art Gallery will not have to struggle to find a seat, or wait unnecessarily for a computer terminal, they will be able to move easily through the complex with strollers, with toddlers in tow, or with mobility devices, without having to overcome the obstacles of stairs or narrow passages.
couraging. These are the same sort of issues that face users of The Library and The Gallery in their attempts to navigate the current facilities. The new Library and Gallery will overcome the shortage of cultural infrastructure and in fact will allow for appropriate service to the community through many years of additional growth. It is a great credit to the City of Grande Prairie that it has chosen to address the community’s need for growth in culture at the same time as it addresses the other needs that growth has generated. The largest portion of the cost of the construction of this public building will be paid by the City of Grande Prairie on behalf of all of us. Both the Province of Alberta and the Government of Canada will also be contributing to the construction, but the generosity of individuals and groups within the community, both as donors and as volunteers, will also play an essential role in this project. Together The Library and The Gallery are working to raise 3.5 million dollars for the purpose of furnishing, equipping, and enhancing the new facility with all of the variety of items that the community needs to make optimum use of the facility. With shelving to chairs to works of art, the new facility will be fully outfitted in a manner that will make us all proud. The fundraising campaign has just entered its public phase and to date the amount raised is over 1.6 million dollars, including a one million dollar donation from the Ken and Teresa Sargent Family Foundation, as well as other generous early donations from the Swan City Rotary Club, the Grande Prairie Public Library Friends Society, Canadian Natural Resources Limited, Elks Lodge 285 and the Royal Purple of Canada, Clem Collins, Alliance Pipeline and Bank of Montreal. The fundraising campaign is being carried out almost exclusively by volunteers, which makes their success so far in the campaign all the more impressive.

E N J OY L I F E T O DAY A N D SAVE FOR TOMORROW
S
ammy and Martha are not alone in wanting to enjoy their lives to the fullest. Sammy works long hours as a lawyer, and Martha’s fitness consulting business is booming. For them, leisure and recreation are rewards for working hard, and as their incomes have steadily risen, they’ve had no problem funding their lifestyle. The recent slowdown in the economy has caused them to rethink some of their spending habits and devote more time to preparing for the future. Although they believe it’s important to balance present desires with future realities, they are unsure what it will take to do this on a dayto-day basis.
WHAT THEY’RE DOING RIGHT
Though Sammy and Martha are living their lives as they see fit, they have not been doing so on borrowed money. Other than their mortgage, they don’t have a lot of debt, which is a definite advantage. Although they haven’t been investing large amounts in their registered Retirement Savings Plans (RSPs), they have a realistic understanding of how time and compounding interest can work to their advantage. As a result, most of their RSP investments are in equities. Their reasoning is that they won’t need the money for about 20 years; therefore, they are willing to accept some volatility in exchange for greater growth potential.
WHAT THEY NEED TO DO NOW
Sammy and Martha have indicated that, if at all possible, they want a convenient solution. In other words, they want to start
putting some money away, but don’t want to spend a lot of time thinking about it.
GOOD HABITS ARE HARD TO BREAK
With this in mind, we think the first thing they should do is set up a regular RSP contribution plan. This way, the money can be taken directly out of their bank accounts every month and directed to an investment of their choice. Coming up with smaller monthly contributions is much easier than making large, lump-sum contributions. A regular investment plan would meet their need for convenience, and they’d barely notice the difference in their available cash flow. More importantly, a regular investment plan will ensure that Sammy and Martha keep their retirement goals a priority while allowing them to continue their active lifestyle. In addition, their RSP contributions are always working towards their long-term goals. Plus, when markets are down, their regular contributions buy more investment units; when markets are up, they buy less. In the investment world, this strategy is known as “dollarcost averaging.”
PLAY SOME CATCH UP
Another strategy Sammy and Martha might want to consider is catching up on their RSP contributions with a line of credit. RSP lines of credit come with convenient repayment options. If the catch-up contributions trigger a larger tax refund, they can use that money to pay down the line of credit.
ESTABLISH THEIR RETIREMENT GOALS
Although Sammy and Martha know the kind of lifestyle they want now, they accent | 13
should consider sitting down with a financial advisor to determine how they want to spend their retirement. They’ll need to fund their dreams later in life. A financial advisor will help make sure their asset allocation strategy is in line with their long-term goals. Right now, the investments in their RSPs are mostly equity-based. A more balanced mix — that includes some bonds and other fixed-income investments — would provide some stability to their portfolios in more challenging markets.

CELEBRATE TYING THE KNOT
By Deanna Kent-McDonald
T
he tapestry of life is sewn together with experience, held together by memory. And for the brides and grooms of the world, a wedding is the perfect opportunity to create special memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. No matter how a couple decides to celebrate the monumental event, finding ways to personalize the day is top priority.
the Chateau Lake Louise fit the bill for the traditionally elegant affair that they wanted. “With the facility we chose we did not have to improvise in any way – the special events staff were accustomed to assisting in every way as the majority of their weddings are planned from out of town.” With the expertise of a wedding planner, the stress of arranging from afar didn’t get in the way of their excitement. Using a wedding planner for their destination wedding was also the way to go for Linda Side and Jim Munro who were graced with the experience of knowing exactly what they wanted; a celebration void of stress which would unite them and their families. They chose to be married in Kauai, a place that they had fallen in love with on past vacations. The lavish traditional Hawaiian ceremony was on an estate that boasted lush botanical gardens, and they had the ocean just a path away. The setting was expansive enough to accommodate the many people who traveled with them to commemorate their day.
AFTER THE “YES” RINGS OUT, ONE OF THE FIRST CONSIDERATIONS THAT COUPLES MAKE INVOLVES THE LOCATION OF THEIR WEDDING CEREMONY AND THE RECEPTION THAT WILL FOLLOW.
A CLEAR IDEA OF WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS A MUST.
Venue often colours the entire feel of the day and thus this decision is not one to be taken lightly. When Carmen and Matt Vallentgoed got engaged during an annual family 4x4ing expedition to Porcupine Flats on the Kakwa, they knew right away that they wanted to be married at a local church and then dance the night away with family and friends at Five Mile Hall. “Five Mile Hall just seemed to be the perfect spot. And from the very beginning, both of us thought that our day wouldn’t be as special anywhere else.” Their choice of locations reflected a desire to celebrate with many family members and friends, and also demonstrated the pride they feel for their community.
Carmen and Matt envisioned their wedding as a fun affair for them, their families, and their friends. For Carmen, who works as a graphic designer in Grande Prairie, arranging the particulars and taking care of the finer points of decorating was more than just a whim. “I’m very visual, so the decorating and anything that could be designed was very important to me. It’s who I am.” Although she had plenty of help from her mom and her bridesmaids, Carmen did a lot of the preparations and took care of many of the details. The yellow palate she chose accented everything from the invitations to her bouquet of daisies. Even the stunning wedding album Carmen designed to preserve her photos coordinates with her wedding theme and colours.
Though their original plan involved an elopement and a backyard barbeque, Sarah and Thor Pruckl had numerous guests from overseas, so they decided on a more formal celebration. The panoramic setting of Lake Louise seemed a perfect place;
Sarah and Thor put their trust into a professional events planner and their wish for an elegant affair was totally fulfilled. Spa treatments for the maids of honor, a delectable seven course

meal, and handmade chocolates for her guests were part of Sarah’s idea for their dream wedding. Materialized, each of the little things that they did tied into the grand scheme of what they had envisioned for their day. For Linda and Jim, the details of their memorable celebration centered around the idea that the day was a ceremony not just for them, but for their children as well. Their invitations had the children asking guests to celebrate the marriage and the union of all of them as a family. Rejoicing in their new blended family “was the essence of the trip.” Linda was able to choose exactly what she wanted for herself, and she was also able to incorporate what was important for the little ones. Each one of them was an integral part of the ceremony. “Our five girls were beautiful. They were like little nymphs in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
THERE ARE MANY WAYS A WEDDING CELEBRATION CAN BE UNIQUE AND PERSONALIZED.
Since Carmen and Matt’s trucks symbolize their personalities and passion for adventure and the outdoors, nothing else could have been more perfect than the four colourful vintage trucks they decked out for their day. With their closest family and friends, they rode to their celebration destination with wide smiles. The vehicles epitomized their laid back spirits and they love the fact that they demonstrated it in all of the choices they made. Sarah and Thor remember how special it was to see family that they hadn’t for a long time, and to meet the new family that had travelled over oceans to toast them. A whimsical wildflower theme delivered in the form of invitations ordered from the U.K. and a talented pastry chef in Banff (who used fresh flowers on their cake) helped to make their Lake Louise wedding stand out for them and for their guests. For Linda, Jim and their families, doing things “their own way” was the key to creating emotional and sentimental memories. Handmade leis fashioned by a dear Hawaiian friend, the fact that their children, family and friends could join them to celebrate new lives together, and the wedding vows they wrote for one another were the things that created the greatest joy in the memory of their wedding.
EVEN THOUGH THERE IS OFTEN A LOT OF PLANNING THAT GOES INTO A WEDDING, SOMETIMES THE BEST MOMENTS ARE THE ONES THAT JUST HAPPEN.
Originally, Carmen and Matt had no desire to add the headache and extra cost of an elaborate cake to their already full wedding agenda. Fortunately, family friend and Chef Hal Buechner wasn’t about to let them have their way. “At first we didn’t think a wedding cake would be particularly important for the day, but when we passed out the pieces to everyone, it was a wonderful opportunity to visit with each guest. Our cake was delicious! People still talk about how great it was.” Linda and Jim also received a spontaneous gift when the sun found its way to their outdoor ceremony. “Kauai is one of the wettest places on earth, and bursts of sun and a rainbow came out from the mountain backdrop mist as the ceremony began.” Sarah and Thor’s May ceremony was shifted indoors with the untimely arrival of snow the day before. “We were supposed to be married outside, but we moved indoors to the Sun Room because of the unexpected snow. But our photographer was able to use an amazing backdrop for our pictures!” Figuring out the where, when and how are important for any wedding. But once those things are planned, the most important memories of any wedding are woven from the smaller, more personal decisions, details and unexpected miracles of the day. If it can be dreamt, it can be done. And once it is, the memories of a wedding last forever.

DOWNTOWN
GRANDE PRAIRIE
DOWNTOWN VIEW By Cheryl McKenzie and Helen Rice
E
very community, no matter how large or small has a ‘downtown’. The centre of the town or city, from where all else grows. Grande Prairie is no different even though our boundaries are growing by leaps and bounds. Our Downtown core has become a bustling frenzy of activity. With older buildings revamping and new buildings popping up, it is still the home of shopping, financial and corporate services, not to mention being the centre of recreation and entertainment for the city with the Bowes Crystal Centre as a major facility for numerous events each year. With all this going on downtown, did you ever stop to wonder who is responsible for making things happen? You don’t need to look much further than the Downtown Association Chairman, Harold Friesen and Executive Director, Helen Rice who lead a group of dedicated board members. They take their roles about the Downtown very seriously. Just have a look at what the Board directly oversee.
of selecting the recipients of two of the Downtown’s awards – the ‘Art Ouellette Memorial Award’ and the ‘Downtowner of the Year’ Award.
PROMOTIONS COMMITTEE
They work to attract people from all over the region to the Downtown through events, attractions, promotions and cooperative marketing. Some of the signature events that the Downtown Association is proud to coordinate are the Canada Day and Santa Claus Parades, Halloween Walking Parade and Vegas Night. This year the Stompin’ Sidewalk Sale will take on a new face with the launch of a new partnership with the Roteract Club, to promote the Duck Race. Downtown Duck Days should be quite the Splash!
STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS
The Committee develops and implements strategic improvements to the core area with input from the City and Transportation Master Plan, development of the Montrose site and overall Downtown Master Plan (for more information refer to Rob Swanston’s article on Walkable Urbanity – page 36).
BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE
They develop, implement and maintain physical improvements to the downtown streetscape. They also monitor and evaluate parking availability and make recommendations accordingly. The Beautification Committee is notably responsible for the spectacular array of flower baskets that line the streets and businesses in the summer!
The Downtown Association is working hard to create a successful Downtown experience for everyone who visits, whether you are shopping, doing business or just strolling and enjoying the fresh air. Your input is always appreciated. You can contact the Downtown Association at 538 - 1909.
MEMBER AFFAIRS
The committee develops and implements programs that will enhance the exposure and overall image of the Downtown to both members and the public at large. They have the honour accent | 35
WALKABLE URBANIT Y “IN ORDER TO ATTRACT, YOU HAVE TO BE ATTRACTIVE...” By Rob Swanston
I
n September of 2004 a 50-page document called the Downtown Enhancement Plan was completed and made available to the public by the City of Grande Prairie. As stated in the Plan, “it deals with new policies, guidelines and concepts that pertain to development activity in downtown Grande Prairie and it’s sub areas. The Downtown Enhancement Plan functions as a formal City Council policy document. Its implementation is guided by the City of Grande Prairie yet requires input and cooperation from both the public and private sector.” I recently spoke with City Alderman Gladys Blackmore and asked her for a few updates pertaining to the Downtown Enhancement Plan. WHERE IS COUNCIL AT REGARDING THE CONCEPT OF OFF STREET PARKING? There will be underground parking as part of the Library/Gallery development. Some additional parking may be made available on city land recently acquired near the Aberdeen Centre. The downtown enhancement plan specifically refers to mid-block parking, which will require the purchase of land in the downtown area. Currently there is not much available, but the concept has not been shelved either. WHERE IS COUNCIL AT REG ARDING THE CONCEPT OF A MULTI-LEVEL PARKADE, ON OR CLOSE TO THE CRYSTAL CENTRE ARENA LANDS? I believe our administration has had some discussion with one of the downtown developers. However, there is no clear agreement as to whether there is enough parking need in the downtown to support a multi-level parkade, and as far as I know this has not progressed beyond discussions.
WHERE IS COUNCIL AT REGARDING THE CONCEPT OF A TRAFFIC COUPLET SYSTEM? This will be coming forward to the newly elected council in the fall during budget deliberations. I expect there will be a request for design funding, followed by construction funding over the three-year budget cycle. The actual route of the couplet may require some adjustment, but is pretty much selected at this point. WHERE IS COUNCIL AT REGARDING THE TRANSIT CENTRE-HUB CONCEPT? Our Transit Master Plan is currently under study and revision is anticipated. It will be a few months before that is complete. We have taken advantage of the transit grants available through the Federal Government to order more transit buses. Unfortunately these will do little more than replace some of our aging fleet, and of course, buses take time to be delivered.

Now that you are aware of the Downtown Enhancement Plan and hopefully have taken a closer look at it, I urge you to download a free-of-charge, virtual globe program called Google Earth. Upon opening the program an image of the earth appears onto your screen. You are able to type in any actual place name or address and within seconds are transported to that precise location via satellite imagery. While floating around above Grande Prairie you can really conceptualize the concept of the downtown traffic couplet system, observe where the new Public Library and Art Gallery will be constructed and determine how a central transit hub might look when located in the Aberdeen area. You might also visualize how the off-street parking sites or the above ground parkade(s) could help divert vehicle and pedestrian traffic throughout the downtown, espe-
cially after the traffic couplet system is in place. The term ‘global neighbourhood’ is definitely relevant when using Google Earth, so find a speedy computer and take a unique virtual tour of downtown Grande Prairie.
However challenging it may be to foster a walkable urbanity, it is key to the revival of any struggling downtown, and can be accomplished by championing a diverse mix of retail boutiques, hotels, grocery stores, housing, offices, artists’ studios, restaurants, entertainment, recreation, culture, public transit, after school programs, anti-crime initiatives, youth development, employment services, widened sidewalks, public green space, on street commerce and dining experiences, etc. Many of you have experienced the ‘buzz’ that you get when visiting an interesting downtown neighbourhood and it is within the critical mass of these pedestrian-scaled neighborhoods that the idea ‘more is better’ makes sense. Downtown Grande Prairie is making the transformation to become the attractive centre or heart of this region and with a shared vision we can continue to create something that is unique and attractive to us all.

100 St.
I came across the term walkable urbanity when reading an article by Christopher B. Leinberger (2005). Leinberger spoke about how when studying human beings for thousands of years, it was found that as a species we have never really enjoyed walking more than 1500 feet before we instinctively seek out alternative forms of transport. 1500 feet would be like walking half way across West Edmonton Mall from end to end, including the parking lot. Leinberger uses the term walkable urbanity to describe an experience that is found in successful traditional downtown settings. When we are in an interesting and safe streetscape with people to watch and a variety of stimulating sights and sounds, our pedestrian experience becomes enjoyable and we unconsciously forget about the 1500 ft rule.

THE OLDEST BUILDING S T I L L S TA N D I N G
By Mary Nutting, South Peace Regional Archives
T
he oldest building in Grande Prairie is, I believe, Al’s News on Richmond Avenue. I thought it would be fun to piece together a history of the building and give some tips to anyone interested in researching the history of their own business.
Al’s News was originally The Selkirk Trading Co., built in 1913 by William Caldwell, a wealthy young Irishman and his partner John McAuley, an experienced fur buyer. The new building, noted to be “one of the best on the prairie,” was an attractive two-storey building, lit with the most modern gasoline Pitner Lighting system. Although Caldwell and McAuley would retain ownership of the building for many years, the business itself changed hands several times. In 1918, it was sold to Owens & Johnson and eventually re-named Owens Store. A “Clearance Sale” in January 1923 advertised items such as 100 lbs. of sugar for $10.50, and 2 plugs of Big Ben Tobacco for 25 cents. The store was closed for good later that year. This is where the trail runs cold. Photographs of the 1930s show the building with no name on the sign. According to Mr. James Goldsack, the original owner of Al’s News, it was a bakery at one time. Perhaps this was Watt’s Bakery, advertising ‘Bread… the food of Pioneers’ in the 1934 newspaper. In 1940 J.J. Lamb, Plumber and Tinsmith, opened a plumbing shop in the building. This fit in with Mr. Goldsack’s story: “When we renovated there were three or four floors all built on top of
one another, and when we took those out, we found pipe cuttings underneath the floors.” Lamb was finally able to purchase the building in 1944, after McAuley’s death. In 1957, Mr. Lamb sold to Ludbrooks who ran it as the ‘Spice of Variety’ Store where you could find yarns, embroidery patterns, doilies and all the little extras for decorating your home. They, in turn, sold to James Goldsack, the owner of Al’s News. Over the years the building has been renovated many times: a false front; an enlarged upstairs window between the two original windows; a side entry to the upstairs apartment; and extensive renovations to the interior. To research this history of Al’s News I used the tax records at City Hall, digitized Grande Prairie Herald newspapers on the web, photographs and reference files at the Museum and Archives, old telephone books, a 1952 Insurance map, the Henderson Directories and two sources written by Isabel Campbell: the newspaper reference files at the Library and her book Grande Prairie: Capitol of the Peace. I also interviewed the present owner. It is possible to know the history of your building. It just takes a little time and research.
