Have something exciting to share? Want to spread the word? We’d like to include your interesting Downtown news in our new column, Urban Energy. Send details to info@imagedesignpros.com, fax 780-402-0064 or call 780-532-6353.
MONTROSE CULTURAL CENTRE
The Grande Prairie Public Library and the Prairie Art Gallery make their move into their long-awaited new home in June. Both are closing for a period of time to pack, organize and move. Word is that the new building is beautiful!
DOWNTOWN AWARDS
Every year the Downtown Association recognizes businesses for their outstanding contribution to the area. This year the Art Ouellette Memorial Award for pride in maintaining a clean and professional store was given to Diane Laurin of Snapshot Studio and Photo. The Downtowner of the Year was awarded to Shane Mudryk of 214 Place for his commitment to the downtown business scene. Congratulations!
There will be numerous opportunities to visit the library and gallery in the new Montrose Cultural Centre during the Iskoteo Arts Festival, June 16th - 21st. The Montrose Cultural Centre will be hosting a variety of events in conjunction with the Festival, beginning with Municipal Government Day on Tuesday afternoon, June 16th. For more details on the events at the Montrose Cultural Centre and Iskoteo Arts Festival, visit www.iskoteo.com.
MOVING HOME
Another bonus for Grande Prairie and the arts community - the renovations/retrofit of the permanent home of the Centre for Creative Arts are nearing completion and the centre will be moving home in the summer of ‘09. The newly renovated space will boast bright, healthy and well equipped studio spaces, a beautiful gallery to display the work of local artists, a great bistro and an elevator, making our programs and services accessible to all members of our community. Watch for news of the re-opening of the Centre for Creative Arts online at www.creativecentre.ca.
BRAS ACROSS THE BRIDGE
Do you remember the sight of all those Bras Across the Bridge in Muskoseepi Park last October? It is happening again this fall as Victoria’s Attic continues to create awareness for Breast Cancer Month. In addition to decorating Grande Prairie’s bridges, this fundraising event raised enough money for a new chemo chair for the Cancer Clinic at the QEII Hospital. Drop into Victoria’s Attic with donations for the ‘bra garland’ by September 19th and watch for the bras to go up across the bridge on 99th and 100th Avenue.

As part of the ongoing transformation of the Downtown core from tired thoroughfare to hip-place-to-shop, savvy shoppers have discovered the incredible variety that can be found in our very own city. Gone are the days when to find the perfect prom dress or killer blue suit or golden ‘kicks’ (skateboard shoes) you
There are fixtures – such as Milano for Men - in the Downtown landscape that have made their name by steadfastly remaining loyal to their location, no matter the economic climate. Getting fitted for the perfect suit for that special occasion by Rob McConkey and his accomplished staff has undoubtedly become a rite of passage for many a Peace Country man. And the store also features classy, quality clothing for all sorts of occasions. From a power suit for an important meeting to comfortable golf wear for that hard-earned vacation, Milano for Men is the go-to place for men’s fashion. McConkey’s favourite designers include Hugo Boss, Kenneth Cole, Tommy Hilfiger and Lacoste. His hot tip for spring is the return of the navy suit. As with most of the retailers I interviewed for this article, he enjoys the relationships he has with his customers. He believes customers support the Downtown because of its unique shopping experience and because they like dealing with the owner of the business.

Aces & Spades
Thanks to the intrepid vision of our Downtown retailers, Peace Country residents can find an amazing array of fashions and accessories within a four block radius of 100th Avenue and 100th Street. Try that in Los Angeles — where it takes a good hour to drive from the swanky, high fashion boutiques of Rodeo Drive to the grunge-funk, surf/skate culture of Muscle Beach! We can park for a few pennies and walk a block from the exceptional career wear, prom dresses and wedding gowns at Fairytales to the lifestyle wear at Fourword.
first had to drive at least five hours south to a larger city. And better yet, here at home the retailers treat their customers like friends and take time to ensure you leave with clothes that suit you perfectly.
Dark Flavour
N
ot long ago I spent a week in Los Angeles with my kids exploring some of its fashion mythology, from the opulence of Rodeo Drive to the original funky shops that spawned the skateboard fashion culture. It was cool – but it also made me realize that while we may live in what Californians would consider a place so far north as to fall off the map… we are actually right in step with worldwide fashion.
Off the Hook which has recently opened across from Bama Furniture, features designers and lines of urban apparel (jeans, t-shirts and hoodies) not found elsewhere. “We carry gear that is a bit different - the Marc Ecko lines, including Ecko Red for women and also Roca-Wear,” says co-owner Erin Bjorklund. “We’re really excited to be in the Downtown. I think people come here looking for an experience. They wander around, enjoying the sunshine, just browsing.”

For Rachelle Martineau of Roots it is important to be locally owned and to retail clothing Canadian designed and manufactured in Canada. She feels her store is maintaining the original entrepreneurial spirit of the Roots founders too. “Our clothing has been ecologically and socially minded since the early 1980’s. We’ve long been forward-thinking, using products like hemp and organic cotton. The founders have stayed engaged in the line,” Martineau states. “It has both great quality and comfort and it lasts. I get people telling me all the time that the baby

Attention to the individual is also the mandate of Shanna MeyerArseneault and her team at Fashionista. “Our stylists help you create a unique look from our racks – we can outfit you from head to toe in half an hour. Fashion is an investment in looking and feeling the best you can. Real ‘fashionistas’ do not believe in trends. But they do add seasonal must-haves to their classic wardrobes to make a stylish statement. What draws people to downtown are the unique shops. People are looking for a different experience from the ‘big box’ stores. Products that are hand selected and of higher quality. What sets Fashionista apart - top brands like Sandwich, Mexx, Jones New York and Spanner. The Fashionista customer has an eye for quality and a serious taste for style.”
“The ‘hot’ thing to watch for this spring is splashes of color, sophisticate safari and bold patterns. What we enjoy most about marketing Fashionista is that the fashion industry is constantly changing — new colors are introduced each season.”

tage home into a cozy retail space chockfull of fashions that range from gorgeous cruise wear to hip L.A. inspired streetwear. Women come to Juneau’s store for more than just a new skirt. She has an uncanny way of infusing the buyer with a sense of confidence in their appearance. Clothes shopping, which for many women can unravel into a session of self loathing in front of a change room mirror that seems to mock their imperfections, becomes a joyful adventure with Juneau’s positive attitude and expert guidance.
for people with similar interests. A half pipe in the back of the store allows skateboard gear to be tested in-house and the company sponsors ambitious snowboarders and skateboarders year round.

Far from being a retailer exclusive to hardcore athletes, Fourword caters to a wide demographic of customers interested in high quality lifestyle oriented clothing. Many of the lines they carry put an emphasis on fair trade and environmentally sound manufacturing practices. Element, for example, has preserving the earth as part of its corporate mandate.
No Need To Knock
From high-end to handmade, accessories add the f inishing touch and per sonal flare that pull your fashionable outf its together. Many of the shops in the Downtown of fer s a treasure hunt of inspiration, including shops such as Clique Interior s and Pure Home. For jeweller y from delicate antiques at Calico Cat Curios to ar tisan-made pieces at Indigo or Coyote Moon Hemp Company; stunning handbags, watches, shoes and belts at dk Fashion Accesso ries or No Need To Knock , true fashionistas can dizzy themselves with fabulous choices.

Think about that: the riches of the global village – from the sleek styles of Manhattan, the sizzle of the runways in Paris, to the hot funk of Los Angeles – all just a few steps away from your nearest Downtown parking metre.
Roots
Dark Flavour another skate & snowboard lifestyle oriented retailer has a very similar attitude. The owners also put enormous energy into supporting the lifestyle of their customers from sponsoring athletes to creating events in the Downtown such as skateboard demonstrations during the annual Street Performers Festival. Both retailers emphasis the positive of the skateboard culture, from the fashion it inspires that encourages creating an individual flare – to the hard work it takes to master the sport.
In one leisurely stroll down 100th Avenue a shopper can outfit and accessorize from head to toe. A shopper can find an excellent range of swimwear in Victoria’s Attic, then stop to drool over the gorgeous shoes in Sole Addiction, then find stunning career wear at Fairytales which can be accessorized further up the street with amazing jewellery and handbags from either dk Fashion Accessories or No Need to Knock.

Anime Hypercubed
“We love to come to work because of our customers. We’re here for the people – to answer questions and help them find what you need, to build a relationship. We want you to get the right product for you – and be happy with what you buy,” says Gerow.
This celebration of the individual – of not conforming but of mixing and matching different pieces of high quality clothing is really a signature for all of the fashion retailers in the Downtown. From the biker/rocker gear at Aces & Spades, to the playful baby clothes at Anime Hyper Cubed, to the amazingly comfortable active wear at Valhalla Pure and Yemanja, Downtown shopping celebrates the individual with a taste for quality. These clothes are both an investment in quality and a statement of each shopper’s unique style.
Anime Hypercubed
Dan Gerow explains this trend. “Global ecology is affecting the lifestyle of our core culture – we rely on clean waves and snow – so of course we’re concerned about the planet. We like to promote that mindset here.” Brands such as Lifetime (a staff favourite) hire artists to design their clothing lines and have a European inspired, tighter fit.
Best dressed baby? Not hard to achieve with the abundance of playful baby clothes to be found in our Downtown core where baby fashions and accessories snuggle in all sor ts of corner s – from Forbes & Friends to Grandview Countr y Store to Unique Galler y. Anime Hypercubed carries delightful baby wear, in organic cottons and cozy designs and also features slings and eco-friendly diaper s and essentials. Roots, with its spunky lines and longwearing favourites, continues to be the stalwar t of qualit y, Canadian-made children’s wear.

TRE-FLIP INTO THE POSITIVE
Skateboard Culture and Why it Matters Written By: Dymphny Dronyk Photography by: Ramsay & Winsor Photography
A
nyone who has watched their child spending hours in the driveway diligently, obsessively practicing a new skateboard move until they land it perfectly understands that the sport demands respect. There’s a scrappy, do-it-yourself energy around skateboarding. The kids cobble together ramps and rails from what they can find in the street. They show unbelievable patience and commitment to mastering their sport. And usually there’s an enviable sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship too. The more experienced skaters offer encouragement and insight. Skaters are out practicing moves long before the last of the snow has melted away in spring and long after the light goes flat at the end of the day. Jump. Smack. Clatter. Road rash. Laughter. Cheers. Since its clean-cut beginning in the 1950’s with the wide clunky, clay-wheeled boards of the era, skateboarding has morphed several times. It experienced a legendary revolution in the
1970’s in southern California amidst the drought and poverty that created a climate of rebellion. A group of skaters pushed the sport and its equipment to new heights, branded by vision and ingenuity with an urban edginess that took skateboarding into the urban landscape and utilized the challenges it found there – stair rails, empty pools and any other interesting surface. The heroes of that era turned their hobby into lucrative careers, either as pro athletes or as the designers, manufacturers or marketers of skateboarding gear. Since then it has also become a wildly successful retail fashion phenomena, but the passion for it remains true to it hardscrabble roots. Skateboarding is as much about lifestyle as it is about sport. Skaters are part of a culture that champions accessibility, individuality and ecology. Learning to ride a skinny board on tiny wheels is tough – never mind what it takes to master a kick flip or a nollie hard flip. And because it is so tough, anyone who The in-store half pipe allows Mathew Ediger of Fourword to test a new board.

either does it, or has tried it, has a deep respect for the sport. Skaters belong to a tribe, a community that is supportive and innovative. The associated clothing, music and multimedia art forms have become iconic brands of their culture. And their community now spans generations – from the businessman who skateboards to work with his suit in his backpack to the girl trying to land her first ollie.
your peers,” adds colleague Ryan Chase. In terms of lifestyle choices avid skaters believe it will continue to become more and more mainstream as a non-motorized form of transportation. “People are becoming green-smart,” explains Anis Zarei. “They’re calculating the costs of transportation. Skateboards are a flexible, affordable alternative. I ride a long board to work and find it really relaxing. I don’t have to deal with traffic issues. It’s easier than a bike because I just put my board under my desk.”
All of these aspects of skateboard culture are evident in Grande Prairie as well. The skateboard oriented shops in town do a “Skateboarders are really proud of what thriving business – and at the same time we do. ARTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Visit Downtown During the Iskoteo Arts Festival By Jody Klassen
Grande Prairie’s downtown core will be transformed into a showcase of the arts in mid June. The Iskoteo Arts Festival, in conjunction with the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards Gala, will provide six days of arts and cultural activities and events geared to the entire family. It starts with the City of Grande Prairie’s Municipal Government Day on June 16 and culminates with Aboriginal Day June 21. Iskoteo, a Cree word meaning Fire in the Sky, is a reincarnation of the celebration accompanying the 1995 Canada Winter Games. Iskoteo was the cultural aspect of the games, and has fittingly evolved to announce the arrival of the Distinguished Artist Awards to our City. A celebration that originally inspired athletes will now highlight the inspirations of numerous talented Albertans. “This is another feather in our cap as a community,” says Alderman Helen Rice, Chair of the organizing committee. “Grande Prairie has repeatedly shown it can host major provincial, national and international events and we see this festival as a way to celebrate the artistic and cultural diversity of our community and the Province.” The Prestigious Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards are held every two years and began in 2005 under the direction of former Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Lois Hole as a way to recognize and encourage the development of the arts community within the province.
The local talent will be out in full force to make the Iskoteo Festival and Distinguished Art Awards unlike anything ever held in our City. “We are excited with how the program is unfolding,” says Alderman Rice. “This week of activities will leave a strong legacy of support for the arts in this community.” Through the involvement of community partners and numerous businesses, every aspect of the arts community will have an opportunity to feature some local talent. GPRC is organizing an art walk and hosting the Songs at Solstice concert. This will be accompanied by an exhibit of Aboriginal artifacts supplied by the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre. The Art of the Peace Visual Arts Society is presenting a juried art show at GPRC. The Centre for Creative Arts will host the Art Board Show and Auction. Forty skateboard decks have been decorated by local artists. There will be writing and publishing workshops and seminars held at the Centre courtesy of Wordspinner. Bibi Clements works will be featured at her exhibit Vigil of Angels, at the Prairie Gallery during the Festival. The Gallery is also hosting the Provincial Curators Conference. Other Downtown activities include a book launch at the Rabbit Hole bookstore and numerous Aboriginal entertainers to delight audiences at the Summer Solstice Super Market, presented by the Farmers Market to mark five years at its current location. The Library has held a writing contest for all ages and prizes will be presented during The Clem and Muriel Collins Awards Night. A puppet play and story time will take place for the little ones. All ages alike will have the opportunity to meet Peace Country authors at The Local Connection, all who enjoy reading and writing children’s books are welcome.
The two winners of this award will each receive $30,000 cash, a hand-cast medallion, a pin and framed citation. The awards will be presented during a Fire and Ice themed Gala evening at the Douglas Cardinal Performing Arts Centre at Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) by the current Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, The Honourable For a complete list and Norman L. Kwong, C.M., A.O.E. more information on the events and activities of Previous winners include a theatre Iskoteo see the ad on page troupe, an author, musicians, a play2 of this magazine or visit wright and an architect. Any Albertan who has made a significant contribution in the provincial arts community can be nominated.

hink ‘Fashions from the Past’ and we usually picture the cloche hats and flapper dresses of the 20s, bobby socks and poodle skirts of the 50s, or even the checks and plaids of the 70s. But fashion is about so much more than what we wear.
Grande Prairie’s past includes many Fashion Shows put on by local organizations and businesses. These were used not only to elevate the importance of style, but also to raise funds for charities, create awareness about the aims of an organization, and provide entertainment for the good-sized crowds that attended. They also gave the models some training and an opportunity to ‘strut their stuff’ and so were an enjoyable experience for participants as well as audience. The photograph here is of the models for a 1947 Stagettes Fashion Show in the Pagoda Room of Joe’s Corner Coffee Shop. The Stagettes Club was formed for single business women during World War II. Their purpose was to raise funds for benevolent causes, and to serve as a social club for single women. If you married, you forfeited your active membership and became an honorary member.
Each April, the club put on an Annual Fashion Parade. “I cannot say that we are ready to model in New York,” president Marie McFetridge reported in a 1947 Stagazette Newsletter, “but the audience seemed to enjoy our efforts. The Parade was in the form of a diary, in which milady modeled her wardrobe bought on a trip to Banff. Each item fitted into exciting holiday festivities.” You can imagine the creative script that accompanied the models’ parade. The Stagettes took fashion seriously—they were professional business women who, in that day and age, had to present a certain image — but they did not allow fashion to rule their actions. They used their fashion shows to raise funds for good causes and had great fun doing them. This was only one of the organizations in the south Peace which used fashion shows to promote and further their aims. Others which come to mind include Beverly’s Style Shop, the United Church Women and the Grande Prairie Museum (think Doug Clarkson in one-piece red flannel underwear). I’m sure you can think of many more.
