RAMSAY AND WINSOR PHOTOGRAPHY MOVES TO MAIN
After many years of operating a home based business, owners Keith and Janet decided to go big; September 1st they opened their boutique studio. They now offer their unique photography and products in the heart of downtown.
FIND THE PERFECT FIT AT WALK RUN AND MORE If you like to run, walk, cross-country ski, or swim, Walk Run & More is the place for you. They've got the best footwear, apparel, compression gear, and accessories to keep you warm in the winter, cool in the summer, comfortable on your feet, and on the road to meeting your fitness goals.
the needs of each individual’s feet but on his or her entire body network. With hundreds of shoes to choose from in a huge range of widths, lengths, materials, and types of support, Lauzon estimates they are able to find a perfect fit for 95% of their customers. Stop by for a professional shoe fitting today!
Most importantly, they prove it doesn't have to hurt to maintain an active lifestyle! They specialize in finding the perfect shoe for those who are hard to fit, and they offer fitness clinics ranging from Wanna Be a Runner? to marathon training. Called the shoe guru by staff and customers alike, the store’s owner, Lisa Lauzon, is often found performing free gait analyses for clients. Using specialized software, the technique enables staff to measure (to the degree) the relationship between someone’s arches, ankles and knees. Armed with this information, a selection of shoes are recommended based not only on
Did you know that 90% of ingredients found in commercial baby products are skin and eye irritants, or that many name brand baby shampoos contain a type of formaldehyde? Being exposed to so many harmful agents, it’s no wonder that babies’ sensitive skin is prone to eczema, rashes, and other skin irritations. Thanks to a new store downtown, Grande Prairie parents now have a place to go for healthy alternatives. Mother Nature’s Way, located at 9908B-100th Avenue, aims to “take the guesswork out of the shopping experience” for moms (and dads) who are looking for natural and organic products to care for themselves and their newborns. Lindsay Wyffels, the store’s owner, is excited to offer items ranging from bamboo biodegradable wipes to Soapnuts Laundry Detergent that are 100% chemical free. She carries items for allergy sufferers too that are gluten-free, nut-free, and vegan. Wyffels is proud to offer a place where moms can get post-partum recovery products and support, and a comfortable setting where they can change diapers, use the washroom, and breast-feed. Since the store opened in August, 2010, the Baby Organic skin-care line has been their best seller, but other products like baby-friendly hand sanitizer and Apple Cheeks reusable diapers with flushable bamboo liners have also proven to be popular. From pregnancy to postpartum recovery, Mother Nature’s Way can help.

rated shells from Africa, date back over 40,000 years. Copper jewellery first appeared on the scene 7000 years ago and after that, jewellery-making became a significant craft.
Jewellery is one of the oldest forms of decorative art, and is studied by archaeologists to understand ancient civilizations. At various times in human history it has been used as currency and a form of portable wealth, to show membership or status, as a form of protection against spiritual forces, for functional purposes and for artistic display. The first jewellery, beads and deco-
Considering jewellery primarily as a form of art began in the late 19th Century and is now in full bloom. Even a cursory look at the vast selection of jewellery in downtown Grande Prairie reveals that we are in a luminous time for jewellery lovers. Whether you like something ultra modern or something inspired from ages past, it's out there.

Handmade & Hand-picked
The jewellery you wear is the ultimate expression of individual taste. Some enjoy sticking with fun fashion jewellery, others want something more unique. Handcrafted jewellery fills this niche. No two pieces are the same, and those little variances speak to different people. Handcrafted jewellery is available from local artisans, as well as provincial, national and international ones. For some people, buying Canadian made or locally crafted items is important.
Fashion Fits
Fashion jewellery (a.k.a. costume jewellery) sometimes gets a bad rap. It isn't about passing anything off as “the real thing, but rather wearing something fun and funky that coordinates with your outfits. It's an easy way to change up your look, and finding something you like is half the fun. Some designers make fashion jewellery lines, producing multiples of a given design but not on the mass scale of other fashion jewellery. They sometimes incorporate higher quality materials such as sterling silver or Swarovski crystals. Names like Roost, Foxy, Bauxo, Myka, Artizan, and many more, can be found in downtown Grande Prairie. Want to support a cause with your purchase? One local designer at the Centre for Creative Arts gives a portion of her sales to breast cancer research; so does Trollbeads with one fundraiser bead.
Designers of handcrafted pieces often use higher quality materials. Some work with unique materials such as knit metals or antler. If you like the idea of wearing some history, Heritage Beads jewellery is made from actual 19th Century beads.
Adaptable Adornment
Versatility is all the rage in jewellery. Anyone remember charm bracelets? I still have mine, though I haven't worn it in thirty years. In 1976, Trollbeads from Denmark updated the charm bracelet idea. The result is a sterling silver or leather bracelet you string with individual beads that each have a story and reason for being chosen. While
Then there's Sarah's Hope, a line of sterling silver and crushed-crystal jewellery. A portion of every sale goes to MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Associates) to fund microloans for women around the world who struggle with poverty. Every series is named after a real woman whose story you can learn.

t h e beads might be mass produced, each bracelet is as unique as the person wearing it. With silver, gems and Italian glass, this jewellery is of keepsake quality. Pandora jewellery operates on the same idea as Trollbeads but uses gold and more delicate bead designs. In both cases, the wearer ends up with completely personalized jewellery. The only way to have something more personal is to get a piece of jewellery custommade. A twist on the versatility trend is Canadian-designed Kameleon jewellery, a collection of sterling silver settings with “JewelPops” made of semi-precious stones and other quality materials that you can move from one setting to another. In a similar vein, photo jewellery offers settings such as rings or bracelets, that allow for the insertion of photographs.
Picking Precious Metals
Sterling silver, the highest quality available, is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper, which makes it a good choice for people with nickel allergies. Silver is sometimes coated with rhodium to prevent tarnishing, though if you live in a place with mineral-rich water like I do, you might still have problems. Gold quality is measured in karats. 10K is 41.7% pure gold; 18K is 75% pure gold. The higher purity levels of 22K and 24K are generally considered too soft for jewellery use in Europe and America, but are used in other parts of the world. Rose gold contains more copper, while white gold usually has palladium or nickel alloy – mixes which give them their unique colouring. Platinum is the most expensive of the three precious metals because of its rarity and virtual indestructibility – it doesn't wear down like silver and gold do. It's measured on a number scale from 900 (90% pure) to 950 (95.0% pure).
Sparkling Stones
Fine jewellery – gold, silver, platinum, precious & semi-precious gems – isn't only beautiful, but can be an heirloom and an investment. Have you ever wondered about precious metals and what you should look for?
Gemstones are divided into precious and semi-precious categories. Today, precious stones are considered to be diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds, though there is nothing scientific in that deliberation and what is “precious” has changed through the ages. Alberta's gemstone, ammolite, was only given gemstone status in 1981, and is arguably the rarest gemstone on earth, yet isn't necessarily the most expensive. With diamonds in particular, remembering the 4 C's - color, cut, clarity and carat – will help in purchase decisions. The cut of

a diamond (quality, not shape) impacts a diamond's brilliance, so a poor cut will be less luminous. The highest quality cut is called “ideal.” Ask a jeweller to show you the difference. Most fine jewellers have at least one person who creates custom jewellery. Pick a new gemstone, or bring in one that's been in the family for generations, and work with experts to design a new heirloom. Jewellery might have many functions, but in the end it's about beauty. And it was never truer that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Modern jewellery is all about personal expression, and the range of jewellery available means everyone can find something they like, something that says, “This is me.” What are you waiting for? Go express yourself.
Stash It Safetly
Semi-precious gems can scratch silver or pearls. Keep jewellery in its original package or a soft bag, especially delicate jewellery (pearls, Swarovski crystals). Don't store jewellery next to a heating vent as sunlight and heat can cause many coloured gemstones to fade. Amber is particularly sensitive to extreme heat and even prolonged exposure to fluorescent lighting. Silver will tarnish less quickly if you keep it in a sealed plastic bag. Wood is best stored in a cool, dark, dry box. Caring for jewellery guarantees it will last longer, whether months, years or lifetimes. Which means we can enjoy it longer.

GUARD THE GLIMM E R Jewellery gets dirty. Cleaning it is important, not just so future archaeologists will be able to study our civilization (although that's a cool idea), but so we can enjoy our wearable art for as long as possible. With fine jewellery, jewellers prefer to clean it for you. They also inspect it for wear to prevent expensive repairs. (Tip: Don't get cleaning done in November or December which are extra busy because of Christmas.) “Last on, first off is an important rule. Makeup, hairspray and hand lotions have chemicals that can damage finish on jewellery of all qualities. It's also a good idea to take off your jewellery while doing housework or taking part in athletics. Chlorine, especially, can be harmful.
Precious Pearls
Take extra care with pearls. Cultured pearls, for instance, are created when humans insert a bead or other object into an oyster or clam, and the result is a pearl that is more fragile because of the thinness of the nacre coating on the bead. (When purchasing, natural pearls are sold by carat weight and cultured pearls are sold by size in millimetres.) For any pearls, wipe them with a soft, lint-free cloth, damp or dry, after taking them off. Make sure pearls are dry before storing them. You can clean them with mild soap and water, but never use harsh detergents, ammonia or and abrasive cleaner or cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners. Re-string pearls periodically to prevent accidental breakage.
Shimmering Silver
Clean silver with a jewellery polishing cloth. Liquid cleaners can be used, but it's critical to follow instructions because you cannot use them on many semi-precious stones as it ruins their finish. If you have a silver piece set with stones, you can apply liquid cleaner with a Q-tip so that the stone is left untouched.
accent | 12
Coatless Copper
Metal jewellery containing copper (including bronze) may develop a greenish patina as seen on the copper roofs of many old European buildings. The green can be removed with a jewellery polishing cloth or a buffing wheel.
Well-oiled Wood
Never soak wooden jewellery in water, especially bamboo since only its outer layer is water resistant. The wood can be dusted with a clean cloth and should be polished occasionally, with jojoba, grape seed, Vitamin E, or even olive oil. Polishing protects the wood from humidity changes. Applying oil too often will cause wood jewellery to darken.
Natural Notions
Bone and horn jewellery can also be treated with jojoba, coconut or olive oil. Wash it in mild soap and water. Washing is also a good idea for jewellery using stone, fossil, or obsidian. Extreme water temperatures, however, can damage these materials.

2010 DOWNTOWNERS OF THE YEAR
For the Menzies, Downtown Business is a Way of Life By Jody Farrell
G
rant and Jamie Menzies talk about city centres with an enthusiasm recognizable to anyone who has ever loved a downtown. They extol the beauty of such major metropolises as Chicago, and speak reverentially of the privately-owned printing shop that still runs out of a centuries-old building on a main street in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Menzies, whose family printing company has spent much of its 60-year history downtown, are recipients of the Downtown Association’s 2010 Downtowners Award. The couple not only believes that a downtown defines a city, but are committed to making it so. A need for space ultimately forced Grant and Jamie to uproot Menzies Printers from its familiar 102 street location. In a bid to stay central, the Menzies waited until 2002, purchasing and building on a downtown strip of property bordering 97 Avenue, just east of 100 Street. Their printing offices connect to Royal LePage, which Jamie operates, having completed both an MBA and a real estate program. Jamie’s business acumen she spent several weeks in a course envisioning and detailing a longterm, viable expansion plan - along with the Menzies’ partnership with Grande Prairie downtown boosters Rob and Cecile Neil and former downtown orthodontist Don Meador, are all part of a strategy to render Grande Prairie’s downtown a seriously vibrant cultural mecca.
Avenue as the annual Street Performers Festival held spectators captive down the street. As Grant and Jamie sat across from the conspicuous old eyesore eating their hot dogs, they agreed that someone had to lasso some life into that end of the main street. One year later, their South Centre Developments Inc. group bought the property, and turned it into the smart-looking complex that now houses several businesses including Fashionista and Valhalla stores. Still, the strongest downtowns must also include residential properties. “There has to be people living there, shopping there,” Grant maintains, adding that this in turn, will attract an assortment of other good businesses. Success however, will require changing the perception by wouldbe dwellers, shoppers and city decision-makers that storefront parking is a must in downtown development. While people in most big cities are prepared to park and walk a distance, or will walk the entire breadth of a city’s downtown, having left the vehicle at home in favour of public transit, Grande Prairie’s residents still want front door access to their destination. And yet, Grant notes, “people here will often park at the end of a huge lot, and walk all the way to a mall’s front entrance, which, in the end, is several more blocks than they would ever have walked downtown.” Grant and Jamie’s downtown commitment goes further than speculating on its property. Menzies Graphics Group was just named the 2010 Chamber of Commerce Employer of Choice. Their children, fourth generation family business members Kate and Jordan, were there to accept the award.
“If you can buy property, you can make the downtown affordable to others,” Jamie explains. One such purchase involved the old Bargain Centre, which, several years ago, stood boarded up and lonely on the east end of Richmond (100)

RICHMOND AVENUE JEWELLERY STORES By Mary Nutting, South Peace Regional Archives
J
ewellery Stores have been a part of Grande Prairie’s downtown since its earliest days. The first jeweller, J.L. Depencier, arrived in 1911 with the Patterson family who set up the first store on the townsite. When the first issue of the Grande Prairie Herald came out on March 25, 1913, it included an advertisement from J.L. Depencier, Jeweller, who “begs to announce that part of his new stock of Jewellery has arrived, comprising some new designs in Watches, Clocks, Broaches, Chains.” At that time, two future Grande Prairie jewellers were working together in Edmonton. Harry (R.H.) Watcher and Clifford (C.S.) Hook were learning the watch and jewellery trade at George Watcher’s Jewellery store. In 1915, George opened a store in Grande Prairie, named it R.H. Watcher, and handed it over to Harry. After three years, Harry sold the store to Clifford Hook and went off to war. Hook soon realized that the jewellery store needed an optometry section to serve the area, and left for Ontario to attend the College of Optometry.
than gold and precious stones. Besides selling and repairing jewellery, clocks and watches, testing eyes and prescribing and making glasses, they sold silverware, fine china and ladies accessories such as ivory handled dresser sets. But jewellery was the crown of the business. In 1921, Watcher’s Christmas advertisement proclaimed: “Jewellery takes a place at Christmas that cannot be filled by any other gift. Flowers may fade—like the Christmas tree—but jewellery, good jewellery, will remain, a permanent expression of affection and regard.”
In 1919, Watcher returned and built a new store, 12’ x 15’, about where Curry’s Jewellers is now. Hook still had the original store. He returned in 1920 to add Optometry services to his store. Watcher soon followed suite. The jewellery business then, as now, was about so much more
The two jewellery stores, Hook’s at 9931100th Avenue and Watcher’s at 10019100th Avenue, operated for many years. There were many changes, including the addition of Bob Hook, who joined his father in 1940 as an apprentice watchmaker, then as an optometrist after graduating from the College of Optometry in 1949. In 1965, Watcher retired and sold his business to Stewart E. Curry who built a new store, Curry’s Jewellers, on the site of Watcher’s store. C.S. Hook died in 1966, but the business went on with Dr. Robert Hook, who practiced for 49 years until finally retiring in 1994.
