URBANENERGY

What’s new, happening, interesting and exciting in Grande Prairie’s Dowtown! By Sarah Harwood

Have something exciting to share? Want to spread the word? We’d like to include your interesting Downtown news in Urban Energy. Check out www.AccentGP.ca for details and updates.

AL'S NEWS CELEBRATES IT'S HISTORY

“We had no idea you had so much stuff in here!” is an exclamation Jim Goldsack, the owner of Al’s News, is used to hearing from first-time customers to his long-time Grande Prairie store. “Name something,” he explains, “and we either sell it or we used to.” Al’s news celebrates their 50th year in business in 2011, and the building they’re housed in turns 100. It is the only building from that era left standing on 100th Avenue. It’s pictured in the 1916 photo below as the Selkirk Trading Company. Since 1961, Al’s News has filled a variety of roles in Grande Prairie’s city centre. They’ve multitasked as a toy store, a repair depot for drills, razors, and other small appliances, and with over 1000 magazines in stock, they also currently operate the largest news stand north of Edmonton. The type of products at Al’s News differs as public demand fluctuates, Jim says, “Costco and Walmart change the family business dynamic, but we still operate as a soup and nuts sort of store.”

ROUNDABOUT PROJECT APPROVED IN GRANDE PRAIRIE

On April 5th, Grande Prairie City Council approved a final plan for the 101 Avenue Couplet Project that would see “two single lane roundabouts on each end of the downtown as a link from the main thoroughfare to the center.” “Don’t confuse Edmonton’s traffic circles with modern roundabouts!” urges a City of Grande Prairie online article aiming to promote the idea of circular intersections to Peace Country residents. “Roundabouts typically have single lanes, lower speeds and are yield controlled. Traffic circles are much bigger, have higher speeds, many lanes and traffic signals.” Roundabouts are commonly known for improving traffic safety, aesthetics, fuel efficiency, air quality, and traffic flow lessening emissions. Although the plan has been approved, don’t expect construction to start any time soon. Currently, there is no funding for the project, but committee chairwoman Helen Rice anticipates the roundabouts to be implemented within five years. Function during power outages. Collisions usually happen at slower speeds and at less damaging angles. Roundabouts allow for easy u-turns Allow for landscaping and other aesthetic uses within the central island. Reduced waiting time for drivers, less idling time and thus better air quality. Energy costs are lower for both vehicles (no idling at stop signs) and for traffic signals (probably nonexistent)

Require all traffic to slow down. Tends to take up more space than crossroads at the intersection point. Drivers may become confused and use roundabouts improperly. USHER IN SPRING

T

he word “decorating” causes some of us dismay. Swatches make us sweat. Colour coordination makes us cower. So it was with trepidation I began investigating home décor businesses in Downtown Grande Prairie. My fear was unfounded. Not because I suddenly gained any kind of interior decorating intuition, but because all the business owners I spoke with are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and want to help their customers turn their homes into spaces they love to live in. The winters in the Peace Country makes many wish for spring long before it arrives. To my surprise I discovered there are established decorating principles for ushering in the spirit of spring, regardless of the weather. Everything starts with a spring cleaning. It might sound corny but decluttering can bring new life to a room and polishing windows lets light infuse a room with warmth. Another relatively easy way to freshen up fast is to give the walls a new coat of paint. If you're inclined, spring colours will make your walls come alive. What does a person do beyond cleaning and painting? I tend to panic. But proactive people will explore Downtown and get inspired. One of the hallmarks of Downtown businesses is personal service and home décor is a fine example of this. Many provide in-home consultations to ensure they are serving their clients to the best of their ability.

Photos top to bottom, left to right: Wake up refeshed with spring-inspired furniture and bedding from The Bed Shoppe; Purple is a hot new colour this year; Capture some sunshine with a handblown glass ball from Unique Gallery; The essence of fresh: Spring green; A seasonal wreath from The Primitive Lane; Spruce up a feature wall in your home with a splash of yellow paint; Nest chair and cushions from Towne Centre Furniture; Serving dishes and linens from Forbes & Friends will bring life to your table; Orange is the musthave decorating color; For a relaxing airy feel, try a beautiful blue-green shade; A simple bouquet of flowers gives your home a burst of color; Bring the outdoors in with nature inspired decor.

Not everyone wants to give their room a complete makeover to make it feel spring fresh. Small things make a big difference. A piece of hand-blown, coloured glass in that clean window, hanging or sitting on the window sill, will catch spring sunshine and cast it around the room. It's the beauty of a cathedral's stained glass window on a smaller scale. For me, spring is the triumph of Mother Nature over Old Man Winter. (Though I do wish she'd start her campaign a little earlier.) Think of that first crocus bursting through the soil, the excitement of finding those first pussywillow buds. So spring decorating can be about bringing nature inside. You can do that with small accent pieces that have nature motifs, such as pottery, candles or glassware. Several Downtown businesses carry local and Canadian arts and crafts which make it an adventure to browse for unique accent pieces that suit your tastes, be they traditional, country or modern. Dan Wourms at Unique Gallery suggests finding a central accent piece you love and highlighting it with smaller complementary pieces. When talking nature motifs, never underestimate the power of a bouquet of flowers or a plant to bring a room alive. If you don't want to deal with fresh flowers, or if you have a black thumb like mine that is deadly to plants, there are a myriad of artificial alternatives. Real plants might smell like spring, but so can a scented candle. If you're inclined, you can even bring the sounds of nature indoors through CDs or sound machines. If nature motifs aren't your style, another thing to consider is colour. Jody Reynolds at Clique Interiors says spring is all about brighter colours, and she agrees that changing your accessories is the easiest way to freshen up. She suggests new pillows or small accent pieces. Neutral furniture allows you to accessorize with almost any colour; with patterned furniture pick out a colour from its fabric; for solids choose

complementary colours. (Example: tossing green pillows onto a red sofa.) Change things up by having boxed spring accessories, just like your Christmas decorations, that you put out when spring fever hits. Packing away the fall and winter accessories will make everything look fresher. A variation on this approach is what LaDine Stevenson of House Dressing calls “repurposing.” Instead of packing things away, repurposing involves a combination of moving furniture, regrouping accessories and adding splashes of colour or plantlife in order to revitalize a room. While spring green is popular in glassware, pottery and fabrics, and a sure way to give a room that spring feel, Stevenson says orange is the hot new colour this year. I confess to being no fan of orange, but when I saw a piece of citrus glassware glowing beside a window, I admit it was captivating. A wall might not captivate, unless it becomes the canvas for a mural, but what's on it certainly can. Pictures can be windows to spring, as can wall hangings, painted tiles, and decorative sprays. These options and more are available at Downtown home décor businesses. What's on your wall might be an accent or a focal point (see page 14), it might have a nature motif or be an abstract splash of colour, but when you change what's on your wall, it changes the whole room's personality. Jo Fisher at Mrs. B's Drapery points out that window fashions can have a similar effect and that window décor is very personal. It's not about what's “in”, but about what you like. She used to be able to walk into a house and know when it was last redecorated by the colour and style of the window coverings, but no longer. Sheers are perennial classics and are wonderful for letting spring sunshine in, but many people now prefer blinds, which can let the light in or block it out depending on your needs. Fisher suggests that neutral-toned blinds are longer-lasting and lend themselves easier to variations in room décor.

The Focal Point is that

one element in a room that naturally draws the eye when you enter.

Scale & Proportion is

matching the room's size and shape with its furniture and accents so everything is in balance.

Colour & Details add

vibrancy, set the mood and enhance the look you are trying to create.

House Dressing boasts a zesty and down to earth array of accessories in this years favorite colour, orange.

Bigger spring decorating projects might involve new furniture. Downtown has a selection of furniture stores, each with its own styles, allowing every taste to be satisfied. The eclectic variety in Grande Prairie would do a larger centre proud. Several store owners regularly travel to international trade shows to ensure their stock is as fashionable as stores in Toronto and Montreal. Jason Sawatzky of Bama Furniture says that home furnishings are increasingly seen as fashion and are a reflection of your personality. Showroom vignettes are designed to give customers ideas to use in their own homes, and to help them discover what suits their lifestyle and even the layout of their home. Large furniture needs a large room, and smaller-sized furniture is becoming easier to find as more people choose to live in smaller spaces such as condominiums. Greys and whites are the new neutrals, but the earth tones, including blues and greens, have always been popular in Canada, perhaps because of our proximity to nature. As people become more urbanized, or more exposed to urban lifestyles through television and other media, bold colours are becoming more common. A stroll through any Downtown furniture store underscores the fact that the days of everyone having almost identical furniture are long gone. It also shows that spring has sprung in the showrooms: in lamp designs, accent pillows, floral/plant motifs and in colour. At Midwest Furniture, Bob Stevenson notes that while colours and lighter tones are seeping back into furniture, textured fabrics are also regaining popularity. Browsing is the best way to discover what's available and what appeals to you.

The Perfect Picture

Allan McAleney, owner of Picture Perfect, is passionate about art. “What you have on your walls will define you a bit, and define your space a bit.” He explains the two ways to look at pictures. First, wall art can be transient. This is the case when you buy a picture to suit your décor, to match a colour scheme, or even to highlight a season. There is nothing wrong with this approach to purchasing art (usually prints), you just need to be aware that art bought this way often ends up in a garage sale when the décor changes. Second, art can have an intrinsic value. These are the pictures that speak to you, the pieces that have staying power in your life simply because you love them. These pictures often become focal points and rooms are decorated around them. While McAleney will help customers purchase either transient or intrinsically-valued pieces, he finds a particular joy in helping customers find that piece of art that sparks a lifelong love. Love that transcends any season but always feels like spring.

The principles already mentioned can be used to apply some spring freshness to any room in the house, not just the shared spaces. Michael Gakan from The Bed Shoppe reminds us that the bedroom is a retreat and should encourage relaxation. Like in the living room, bedroom furniture has returned to light tones. White is also popular again, which lightens up the room by itself, and is easily accented with spring colours or nature motifs. So spring decorating is all about light, bright and airy. Clean and declutter, use lighter and brighter accent colours, bring nature inside, and let in more sunlight and fresh air. Whether you want to spend a few dollars or a few thousand, add a few simple touches or overhaul a whole room, Downtown businesses have the expertise and products to help. Discovering the bountiful choices in home décor in Grande Prairie's vibrant Downtown has helped me replace one Fword – fear – with another – fun. Now I'm eager to spruce up for spring. with plywood so we won’t have to search for studs to hang work anymore.” She also mentioned factors such as specialized lighting and electrical outlet locations that will “finally” improve efficiency and the ability to successfully showcase artwork in their building.

The Centre opened its doors in the old 1950s courthouse building downtown in 1992, adding a diverse cultural element to Grande Prairie's city centre. Since then, it has relocated three times to accommodate renovations in the original venue. On April 6th, The Centre was able to return home, and its executive director, Candace Hook, couldn’t be happier.

Another significant accomplishment is the addition of ramps and elevators to make the space wheelchair and walker accessible. This change is particularly beneficial for participants of The Centre’s Healing Arts Program Initiative (HAPI). HAPI offers art instruction, discussion, studio time, and exhibition opportunities for community members who face financial, personal, or physical barriers. Their exhibits have been shown at The Centre for two years, but many participants were unable to attend in the past because of accessibility issues in the old courthouse. “It’s been a violation that people with physical limitations haven’t been able to attend the shows with everyone else,” Candace admits. “We’re looking forward to welcoming them to all the events.”

“It’s been really exciting!” she beams. “Everything about this space disappears to allow the art to be the feature, and for the first time in three years we can offer our full range of programs.” The renovated building includes a gorgeous 800 square foot gallery, a gift shop featuring local art and fine crafts, modernized openconcept studios, enhanced ventilation, The Centre’s grand and updated computopening is targeted for The Centre for Creative Arts shows off their new look in the old courthouse building. ers. GET YOUR GROOVE ON! Dancing has come a long way since our ancestors first stomped out a beat around a campfire. But like storytelling, it is still a compelling and creative way to express ourselves. Written by Karen Bass Photography by Ramsay & Winsor Photography

n the last few years, dance has surged in popularity to a degree unknown in our culture since Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers twirled their way into our hearts. (Please say you know who they are; I'm not that old.) Shows such as So You Think You Can Dance Canada have introduced new generations to the grace, exuberance and sometimes sheer athleticism of dance.

Viegas emphasizes that “dancing gives you life skills,” including confidence, self-esteem and self-discipline. The Academy has competitive dancers, but most of the 300 students are recreational. The adult classes in jazz and ballroom, are particularly focused on fun and often have waiting lists.

The Centre for Creative Arts often offers recreational classes. As of April the Centre is back in its old courthouse location on the corner of 101 Avenue and 99 Street, and the renovated facility includes a large instructional space suitable for dance. Come fall, children and adults will discover the joys of Spanish dance, and couples will turn up the heat with Latin dance moves. Belly dancing lessons are also planned – a fantastic combination of fun and exercise. Over at the Golden Age Centre on Tuesday nights from September through April, the Peace Country Western Dance Club is teaching students to heat up the dance floor. Students aged 12 to 60 take the six-week introductory class, then move to intermediate levels to learn the waltz, east and west coast swings, cha-cha, nightclub two-step and triple two-step. Yes, dance inspires discipline and self-esteem. Yes, dance is good exercise (and is eligible for parents to claim the Children's Fitness Tax Credit for their children younger than sixteen years). But mostly, dance is fun, and inspires a passion that can last for years - a passion exemplified by the instructors in Grande Prairie's downtown dance studios.

Go Greek!

Dancing isn't only exercise and artistry, it's also entertainment. Inject some fun into your Friday or Saturday night by joining the folks at Acropolis Restaurant on 101 Avenue. The Greek restaurant's taverna atmosphere ramps up at eight o'clock when Oksana Temeer swirls into the spotlight and captivates customers with her belly dancing. Sometimes she gets an adventurous soul to join her. Give it a whirl.

JANET ENFIELD Wisdom of the Ages April 2 – May 17, 2010

This portrait exhibition earnestly captures the spirit and unique perspective of Peace Country elders whom the artist has had the pleasure of interviewing and photographing. It was once said, "The best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person." Enfield’s intent is to help pass this wisdom along. #103, 9839 - 103 AVE, GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB, T8V6M7 PHONE: (780) 532 - 8111 WWW.PRAIRIEGALLERY.COM

REMEMBERING THE YORK'S CHARM

By Mary Nutting, South Peace Regional Archives

H

otel York opened November 8, 1948, and was described by the Grande Prairie Herald as "the newest and probably the finest hotel north of Edmonton". "Upstairs there are 23 rooms, all with running water, many with a private bath. All rooms have wall-to-wall carpets and hallways are carpeted. Each room is individually furnished in soft, harmonizing colours, with natural colour furniture as a background. All rooms have been wired for telephone, but are not as yet connected due to inability to obtain a switchboard at present." The services in the hotel included the York Café (a lunch counter and soda fountain), a newsstand, a dining room, two beverage rooms, and downstairs a state-ofthe-art laundry, boiler room and banquet room. For much of its lifespan, the activity at the York Hotel, at least in its tavern and restaurant and including furnishings and décor, was strictly regulated by the ALCB. In 1948, beer was sold in 8 oz. glasses, to the "tide-line", at 10 cents a glass. The price of beer did not rise until 1965, when it was 15 cents for a 7.25 oz. glass. In 1970, the price rose to 20 cents for a 7.25 oz. glass. At last, in 1977, the ALCB removed controls on the size of serve and price per ounce, allowing licensees to serve beer in pitchers and the market to determine the price.

"Ladies and Escorts" and soon after, the Pioneer Lounge & Dining Room opened. In 1964, musical entertainment began to be allowed in beverage rooms, and a bandstand was built in the Tavern. Country and western bands became a staple of the York Tavern, and although silence was at first required, within a year the patrons were often singing along with the band. In 1968, the York's banquet room, which was a meeting place for many local organizations such as the JayCees, Rotarians, Kinsmen, the 54 Club, and Associated Canadian Travelers, was renovated and became the York Cabaret. This was followed in 1976 with “Dancing Allowed” and the new dance floor in the York Tavern was instantly popular. When the ALCB revoked all cabaret licenses in 1981, the York opened Homesteaders as a quiet bar. Just a bit of history for the now-doomed, but once great Hotel York.

Over the years there were many renovations: a 16 room addition in 1953, another 24 rooms and a larger restaurant in 1955. In 1958, the Tavern had to be sectioned to provide for accent | 38
