KICK-OFF AT THECentre Wearable Art Show and Gala Centre for Creative Arts Fri. Sept. 17th, 7pm
This FREE event will serve as a kickoff party for Alberta Arts Days in Grande Prairie. The evening will feature a catwalk style showing of wearable art pieces created by local artists.

Performance art will be incorporated into the evening through dancers and costumes. After the show, models dressed in wearable art pieces will mingle with guests while everyone enjoys unique and artful offerings created by talented local chefs. This high energy evening will be a spotlight on contemporary culture In Grande Prairie. Select pieces will be displayed for the duration of the weekend, along with wearable art pieces so that even more people will be able to experience this unique exhibition.

Five Alarm Photo – Opening Night Centre for Creative Arts, Dance Studio Fri. Sept. 17th, 7:30pm
This exhibition will feature 5 local photographers, 5 models, 5 themes, and one final collaborative installation which will be unveiled during Alberta Arts Days in the Centre for Creative Arts following the Wearable Art Show. Each of the 5 photographers will work with 1 different model for each theme, in a secret location, capturing their own unique interpretation of the selected theme. The work will not be shown, shared or discussed until the opening reception where the 25 finalized images will be shown for the first time.
Wild Art
Centre for Creative Arts Fri. Sept. 17th, 7pm-10pm Artists will engage youth by creating a long horizontal mural that will be painted and hung from the fence outside of the Centre for Creative Arts. Participants will be given coveralls and allowed to go wild with abstract expressionistic techniques, throwing and splattering the paint over the twenty foot mural. The activity will take place at the Centre for Creative Arts and with the participation of 15 youth from the John Howard Society. The mural will be on display at the Centre for Creative Arts for the duration of Alberta Arts Days.

Outdoor Arts Festival
Location: Muskoseepi Park Pavilion Sat. Sept. 17th, 10am-6pm and Sun. Sept. 18th, 1pm-4pm
This venue is centrally located with parking, weather alternative buildings, an amphitheatre and many other amenities. The Park is a hub for the weekend’s celebrations. Come pick up programs of events that are happening at other venues while enjoying live artists demonstrations, musical performances, poetry readings, interactive hands on art activities, children’s activities, an art market featuring local artists and craftspeople and a trade show highlighting local cultural organizations. This family friendly event will be free to the public. The outdoor festival will be housed in four tents and in the case of severe weather some activities may be moved inside to Muskoseepi park pavilion.

DIGGINGtheARTS REEL SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL Second Street Theatre Fri. Sept. 17th, 7pm; Sat. Sept. 18th, 1pm & 7pm; Sun. Sept. 19th, 1pm & 7pm This 52-minute package of films from Grande Prairie Live theatre 2009 and 2010 Reel Shorts Film Festival features the arts and how their surprising effects can be found anywhere and everywhere. It will screen free of charge to the public. This package is rated PG and is not recommended for young children. The films are between 4 and 13 minutes long.
It starts with the oldest art form – storytelling – as illustrated in Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty, screened with the kind permission of Network Ireland Television and Brown Bag Productions, and then proceeds with examples of music (Live Music, The Passenger, and The Necktie), visual art (PostIt Love), and dance (Pretty Big Dig), before finishing with a story about film making (The Climactic Death of Dark Ninja), the art form that can incorporate all the others.

Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty (Ireland, 2008) – A seemingly sweet old lady tells her version of Sleeping Beauty to her terrified granddaughter in this 2010 Oscarnominated animated gem. Live Music (USA, 2009) – A Rock ‘n’ Roll Guitar falls in love with the Violin of his dreams. Post-It Love (UK, 2008) – Too shy to talk to each other, a young couple find a unique
way to show their love for each other. The Passenger (Australia, 2006) – A timid bookworm shares the bus with a passenger who’s strangely affected by music in this 2007 Oscarnominated tour de force which

took the filmmaker 8 years to make by himself Pretty Big Dig (Canada, 2003) – Whimsical and profound, this ballet with backhoes melds classical music and heavy machinery. The Necktie (Canada, 2008) – Fleeing a meaningless job in the corporate world, a middleaged office worker rediscovers the joy of life through an old accordion.
The Climactic Death of Dark Ninja (USA, 2004) – With only one chance to get the final shot of his ninja film, a young director’s preparations all hinge on what happens after he yells “Action”.

ART walk EVENTS Artsy Window Shopping Downtown Put on your high-heeled sneakers, steel-toe boots, or Manolo Blahniks. Whether you prefer Birkenstocks or cowboy boots, walk, run, strut (or even dance) your way through our Alberta Arts Days ArtWalk in Grande Prairie City Centre retail venues. Various shops along the ArtWalk will feature Artistic expressions created by local artists in their windows as well as exhibits at all pink locations on the map. Visit the shops during regular business hours and have your passport (found at the back of this book) stamped at each local. It’s free, fun and fabulous. Feast your eyes, your soul and your soles at ArtWalk! Stop Drop & Roll Fire Performances Live performance featuring dancers and entertainers using fire props at Tito’s Cafe Saturday evening at 8pm. Burning Issue Poetry, Song, & Performance A collection of stories, poetry, and songs will be featured at Bean Counters (Resources Rd.). Readings by artists on Sunday September 19th at 2:00pm. Roof is on Fire Visual Art Collection of visual art, sculpture and craft by local creatives.

FOLLOWthe READER Library Events Illustrating Workshops for Kids Grande Limited Grades Grades
Prairie Public Library Space – Registration Required: Call 780-357-7454 1-2: 11am-12pm; Grades 3-4: 1pm-2pm; 5-6: 3pm-4pm Lorna Bennett, an Alberta-based children’s illustrator, will be giving three workshops, demonstrating illustration skills. Her work includes the Dot to Dot in the Sky series, True Story, and Hockey Trivia I and II, among others. She currently works at the U of A Hospital for Artist on the Wards.
Lorna’s sessions involve fun, interactive drawing. The illustrator will do a whole day’s worth of workshops with drawing, storytelling, learning to write books, etc. for children.

Ted Bishop’s travel book Riding with Rilke: Reflections on Motorcycles and Books (Penguin 2005 /Norton 2006), was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award, the Writers’ Trust Award, won the Edmonton Book Prize, the Wilfred Eggleston Award and the Motorcycle Award of Excellence (MAX!), and was named a Best Book by the Globe and Mail, CBC’s Talking Books, and Playboy magazine, where he appeared (in textual contiguity) with Pamela Anderson.

GPRC Fine Arts instructor Ken HouseGo will offer an “Art and Architecture” walking tour. The tour is about 1.25 hours long. It covers a brief history of the original Douglas Cardinal portion of the College the iconic core and establishes a sense of what Grande Prairie was like in 1974. It also overviews Douglas Cardinal’s career path as a warrior architect. During the tour, there will be presentations about the permanent sculptures and some key art works. The tour is free to the public.

Join Laura St. Pierre to discuss her exhibition, AutoPark. Weather permitting, Laura will lead a tour of the exhibition. St. Pierre is an instructor in the department of Fine Arts at the GPRC and has shown her work across Canada. She holds a BA from UBC, a BA of Art and Design from U of A, and a MA of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal.
