The City of Grande Prairie’s annual community barbecue and municipal celebration kicks off the Iskoteo Arts Festival at Muskoseepi Park. This event pays tribute by adopting the theme Spirit of the People, derived from the poem used in the original Iskoteo festival, associated with the 1995 Canada Winter Games. Municipal Government Day was incorporated into the week to recognize the importance of the event and the impact of arts and culture on the community. Community groups have been invited to showcase their talents. Residents can enjoy a free barbecue, City equipment and city department displays, face painting, inflated bouncing attractions, municipal Olympics, and fun for the whole family.

The Art of the Peace Visual Arts Association is pleased to present the 2009 Juried Art Show in conjunction with the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards and the Iskoteo Arts Festival. Our goal as an arts society is to connect and promote artists throughout the Peace region and further the public’s access to and enjoyment of the ever-growing visual arts component of our culture. This show has provided a tremendous opportunity for our members to display their best work to an audience of artists and art appreciators from all over the province. We have also provided awards of excellence through the generosity of Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines and the selected artists benefit from showcasing their work at the opening and gala receptions at the Grande Prairie Regional College with public access throughout the week. All of the submissions are presented in a virtual exhibit at www.artofthepeace.ca.

On June 17, in the Linda Smith Story Room at the new Montrose Cultural Centre, Grande Prairie Public Library (GPPL) is hosting an event: meet-the-authors with a local connection. What better way to “experience the brilliance of the arts” in the Peace Country then to enjoy the words of local writers?
Iskoteo
On June 18, in the same room GPPL presents a play entitled Iskoteo written by Linda Smith, a local author who passed away in 2007. Linda Smith was the Children’s Librarian at GPPL from 1984 to 2001. She published nine books and numerous short stories.
“I will give you my words To w r a p y o u r s e l f i n Like warm quilts on
Not only did Linda write she also shared a passion for community, literature, ideas, children, and libraries with everyone she met. Her commitment to social justice was intense, her laughter contagious, her generosity limitless, her organizational skills phenomenal. Linda loved words and recognized the profound effect that words can have on people. Following the example of Linda Smith, GPPL would like to give the community of Grande Prairie words for wrapping, sipping, refreshing and soothing.

Opening Reception Bibi Clement: Vigil of Angels Yasuo Terada: East Wind Blows West
Bibi Clement’s exhibition Vigil of Angels represents her long career of art making in the Peace Country. With the generous support of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the exhibition and the accompanying publication offer a touching insight into the artist’s reflections on her extraordinary life to this point. Yasuo Terada is a prominent Japanese ceramic artist who has made the Peace Country his second home. The exhibition East Wind Blows West marks the artist’s 60th year with an exhibition of the works inspired by his frequent visits to northern Alberta and informed by the traditions of Japanese pottery. Join us for a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony with Tea-Master Teiko Ito and her seven assistants. They have travelled from Japan to celebrate the opening of the exhibitions and the new Prairie Art Gallery by offering a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony to the public in the new gallery.
As part of the Iskoteo Festival, Directors and Curators of public art galleries from across Alberta have gathered in Grande Prairie to celebrate the opening of the new Montrose Cultural Centre and to discuss opportunities for cooperation and collaboration. The public is invited on Friday, June 19th to join in the presentation by Lord Cultural Resources, of Toronto, on their progress of the Prairie Art Gallery’s “Best Small Public Art Gallery in the World” project. Funding provided by Canada Council and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
This will be followed by a panel discussion among the delegates about their perspectives on art gallery work. F o r m o r e i n f o r m a t i o n c a l l 7 8 0 . 5 3 2 . 8 1 1 1 • 9 8 3 9 1 0 3 A v e n u e

The Directors of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation join me in congratulating the City of Grande Prairie and all the community partners on planning an outstanding week of arts activities culminating in our Distinguished Artist Awards Gala. We were impressed right from the start with the professionalism, commitment, imagination and good spirit of the organizing committee under the leadership of Alderman Helen Rice. Your collective vision of this city and the contribution that the arts make to defining and enriching your community’s quality of life was clear in the proposal we received four years ago. Those dreams have become a reality this week thanks to a dynamic partnership of Grande Prairie City employees, community leaders and volunteers of arts and cultural organizations. Your City has a beautiful new cultural centre and will have, as a legacy of hosting the Lieutenant Governor Arts Awards, your very own Grande Prairie Awards for the Arts.
