MAKE IT FLOURISH: FINGERPRINT POSTER
GLOBESTOMPER S: PA I N T E D G L O B E
From found river rocks to purchase and polished, signing rocks is a nice step away from the norm. After the wedding, be sure to seal them to prevent the signature from fading. The stones can be a decorative element used in or outside your home.
Having your guests leave a fingerprint on a poster makes this guest book quick, affordable, and visually striking. The image can be switched out, making the prints balloons, sprinkles on a cake, or the wispy puffs of a dandelion. Remember to buy washable ink!
For the travelling couple who aspires to explore the world, a wedding with many international guests, or a travel-themed wedding, a globe guest book is unique and will look lovely displayed in your home. The globe can be painted for a neat effect.

Setting out a guest book
is the perfect way to record the feelings and well wishes of those celebrating one of the happiest days of your life. The tradition is for guests to record their encouraging, embarrassing, or inspiring messages in a bound book during the ceremony or reception. While this approach has stood the test of time and is convenient, couples are seeking out creative ways to serve the purpose of the generic guest book while stepping outside tradition. The classic guest book can leave a lot to be desired and so many of them end up sitting on a shelf to gather dust after the wedding. Many brides are looking to create an interactive, memorable, and personable experience for their guests while also giving themselves a practical, interesting, and sentimental keepsake. Once you move away from the idea of a book, you’ll find a guest book can be made of just about anything: an object representing a shared interest, postcards of trips to come, wooden puzzles or game pieces, or even a piece of furniture. Your bookless guest book can be instant décor for your reception, a work of art to be displayed in your home, or a keepsake for years to come. Here are just a few to consider or inspire…
WEDLIBS: WEDDING MADLIBS
THE LOVE OF MUSIC: VINYL RECORDS
Leave these nostalgic, blasts from the past out on the tables during your casual reception and your friends and family will have a blast filling in their advice. Going through them after the wedding will put a smile on your face, guaranteed.
For music lovers or those seeking a vintage look, using albums that are meaningful to you as a couple or not-so-meaningful records with custom labels make for beautiful decorations. Depending on the number of guests, you may need multiple.

STILL LOVE BOOKS?
For those who want to use a bound guest book but still want to break from the norm, there are many creative directions that you can take. For example, an album of Polaroid shots, a favourite childhood picture book, or a book of small envelopes with cards for the guests to fill out.

the right
bouquet for your day Every bride
wants her wedding day to be a memory of happiness and celebration that she can cherish forever. The bridal bouquet is a superb way to communicate your wedding’s tone, theme, and your own personal tastes. The choices you make for colours, types of flowers, and arrangement style can complement your dress, show off your personality, and give a sense of the tone for the rest of the wedding. There are endless possibilities to shape a bouquet as unique as you, which can make pinpointing the right one a bit overwhelming. It can almost be as tricky as selecting your wedding dress. In this edition, we’ve picked out our favourite trends of the year and worked with local florists to create beautiful bouquets to inspire you.

romance along the river
S H A L O N & K R I S D I C K M A N Married September 22nd, 2013
For Shalon, less time spent planning her wedding meant
less stress. She and Kris love fall colours and agreed they wanted a fall wedding, so when Kris proposed on New Year’s Eve, they decided to get married that year rather than wait an extra twelve months. Their short engagement followed a long relationship. Shalon and Kris had met as young teens at a sports camp in Fairview, then met again two years later and started dating. After Kris bought the engagement ring, he carried it around for a year, at times keeping it in his truck’s glovebox until he found the moment when courage, opportunity, and romance converged. They were snowboarding in Worsley. Kris arranged to ride the chair lift with Shalon. He
handed her a poem he’d written on cue cards and had her read it aloud. It ended with, “Will you marry me?” In addition to the fall date, Shalon opted for a soft romantic theme augmented by touches of nostalgia, such as wearing the necklace her grandmother wore at her wedding 50 years before. Taking full advantage of the fall colours, Shalon and Kris planned an outdoor ceremony overlooking the majestic Peace River valley. Guests were directed to the seating area by old-style signs that had wedding vow phrases on them. They picked up vintage-styled programs from a display of antiques—all found items such as a milk can and suitcase— and walked between old white doors propped open like the entrance to

an old country church, to sit on cloth-covered hay bales. A tulle-draped arch framed the bride and groom against the spectacular backdrop. The wedding party’s colours of chocolate brown and burnt orange blended with the fall colours, as did the girls’ flowers. They took full advantage of the sunny day to take outdoor photos backed by an explosion of golden leaves. Kris’s faithful old truck from his teen years was also featured in some photos, as did the guys’ humour when they revealed super hero T-shirts under their dress shirts. They needed a large venue for the reception and found the Peace River ski chalet gave them both size and a rustic romantic feel, with high ceilings, a fireplace, and wood interior. They hung large pompoms and a
chandelier from the ceiling. White tablecloths were accented with burlap. The head table had a burlap banner in front and was backed by an old door transformed with burlap curtains, lace, and an antique square window propped above it. Freestanding candelabras flanking the head table added a romantic flair, while mason jars and mason-jar wine glasses added a touch of fun. More found items—watering cans, tulle, burlap, antique chairs—decorated spaces around the chalet. Shalon’s sisters ran a photo booth for guests with three old doors as the backdrop. Carefully chosen settings highlighted by thoughtful touches worked together to create the nostalgic romantic atmosphere they had hoped for. And the results proved that fast planning can be fantastic.

happy days are here with a 50’s frolic K A I T L Y N N & J E S S E R O B I N S O N Married May 25th, 2013
Kaitlynn had dreamed about and planned her
wedding day from childhood. The missing element was a groom, but when Kaitlynn was invited to her friend’s daughter’s birthday, she met her friend’s cousin, Jesse. As their relationship progressed, they often joked about getting married, so Kaitlynn wasn’t expecting anything when they made plans to go skating at Muskoseepi Park on Valentine’s Day and she almost backed out. It was bitterly cold and she couldn’t understand why he kept her on the ice until they were finally alone. When he went down on one knee she playfully swatted his arm and told him to get up. Then he pulled the ring from inside his hockey glove.
Jesse’s great timing meant they could get married fifteen months later on Kaitlynn’s dream date: May 25th, an anniversary date (her “something borrowed”) she now shares with her parents and her mother’s brother (different years, of course). Kaitlynn wanted the wedding to have a sparkling chrome look with a 1950’s aesthetic, so the ceremony gleamed with a beaded-pearl curtain as a backdrop, a chandelier shining above the wedding party, and glowing cherry blossom trees on either side. Pink petals scattered down the aisle softened the look. One of the most-anticipated parts of the ceremony was everyone seeing Kaitlynn’s princess-inspired dress. Even her dad hadn’t seen it until he walked her down the aisle.

The bridesmaids’ short pink dresses, reminiscent of poodle skirts, were the perfect counterpoint to Kaitlynn’s belled-out elegance. The casual-formal mix was carried into the men’s attire, with Jesse wearing a full suit and his attendants foregoing jackets but keeping the 50’s look with suspenders, and classic black and white Converse shoes. A junior groomsman carried in a scroll reading, “Here Comes the Bride”; a ring bearer carried a glass slipper on a pillow with the rings; the girl whose birthday party had brought the couple together was the flower girl and wore a dress and tiara that echoed the bride’s. (The girl’s mom was maid-of-honour.) Jesse and Kaitlynn drove away from the church in a 1957 Chevy Bel Air from her father’s antique auto collection. After a photo-session in
the beautifully minimalistic Montrose Cultural Centre, it was time to party, 1950’s style. Kaitlynn’s father’s workshop provided the backdrop with its old-fashioned black-and-white tiled floor. Scattered around the room were a “Pop Tate’s” ice cream bar with soft-serve ice cream and a multitude of toppings, a “Sweet Shop” overflowing with pink and green candies, a “Soda Shoppe” backdrop for a Polaroid photo booth (made by Kaitlynn’s sisters) complete with fun 50’s props, and a jukebox filled with 50’s tunes and presided over by a James Dean cutout. All the touches on the tables also had a 50’s flair, from old-styled pop bottles and glasses, to glass milk bottles of pink lemonade, and checkered napkins. The cake looked like a miniature from the set of a 1950’s musical. The wedding mixed the best of 50’s elegance and 50’s fun. A happy day indeed.

L A C Y & C A R T E R S H I E L D S Married July 7, 2012
Lacy and Carter both come from close-knit families, so
they wanted to include them in every aspect of their special day. Lacy chose to honour her country roots by going for a theme that was rustic and simple. They held the ceremony outdoors at her parents’ farm and Carter’s mother’s best friend performed the ceremony. They personalized it by writing their own vows. Directional signs on old barn wood guided guests to benches made from bales topped with planks. Lavender in mason jars lined the aisle and tall vases holding willows graced the altar area. Lacy’s three deceased grandfathers accompanied her in spirit when she pinned cameos of them to her burlap-wrapped bouquet. Two preschool nephews pulled her toddler niece (flower girl) in a refurbished wooden wagon. The windsor chair at the signing table belonged
to Lacy’s grandmother. After the ceremony, the whole wedding party visited Lacy’s great-grandmother in the nearby extended care centre. The ceremony was the culmination of a year-long engagement. Lacy and Carter had dated each other for seven years prior and had known each other for twelve years. When Carter decided to propose he was nervous about losing the ring, partly because they were rebuilding after losing their house in a fire. He went straight from the jewellery store and took Lacy to the new house to check on building progress before she had to leave to take part in a charity walk. In the basement, he presented the ring to Lacy in the silver ring box that her grandfather had used to hold her grandmother’s engagement ring. Retelling the story makes Lacy smile wistfully.

Pictures of the happy couple festooned the sweets table, gift table, and head table like bunting, using twine and clothespins. Barn-wood signs labelled the various tables and the bar.
The reception was also at the farm, under a pavilion formed by four large tents, and was catered by Lacy’s aunt. Carter’s friend provided homemade beer instead of wine. In lieu of a guestbook, guests filled out mad lib cards which Lacy and Carter had coiled together into a book. Again, the decor was simple. wedding in a winter wonderland L I S A & R Y A N M O E Married January 7th, 2012
A warm tropical night, a path lined with candles,
and a romantic, private, dinner-for-two under a gazebo overlooking the ocean. This was the setting that Ryan arranged on the last night of their vacation in Jamaica. Before the first course arrived, he went down on one knee and asked Lisa to be his wife. Their story started several years earlier. They had noticed each other around but it wasn’t until a few years passed that they were finally introduced through mutual friends. It took some convincing for Lisa to pass along her phone number, but shortly after she did a summer romance blossomed that grew into much more.
Lisa had always wanted a winter wedding, which also suited Ryan’s heavy summer work schedule. They decided on a 21-month engagement, giving Lisa lots of time to plan and implement her ideas. Her passion is scrapbooking, so she channeled that into making everything from their invitations, programs, and menus, to the labels for the candy bar. While it was time-consuming, she feels her personalized approach made the whole day that much more meaningful. Striving for a timeless look, Lisa chose classic black, white, and silver for her colours. While the bride wore white, the rest of the wedding party’s black attire contrasted strikingly with white feather bouquets and boutonnieres, which weathered the cooler temperatures better than flowers might have. To keep warm during the outdoor photo

shoot, the girls wore matching stoles, and in a fun touch, Lisa and her sister donned sequinned UGGs. For the ceremony, candlelight enhanced the wood interior of the church. Lisa likes the romantic feel of candles and also used them extensively in the banquet hall, as centrepiece arrangements and to highlight all the special tables. With black tablecloths, black chair covers secured by white spandex bands and rhinestone clasps, and silver and crystal accents, the reception was transformed into a formal ballroom atmosphere. Lisa either bought or made all the decorations, and she used the long engagement to track down exactly the right items that would create
a perfectly-coordinated setting. She bought some items locally, but some came from as far away as Hong Kong. (After the wedding, she sold most of the decorations, vases, etc., for other brides to enjoy.) She says the most fun she had was assembling the candy bar, including making some of the treats. She also made biscotti for guests to enjoy at the church with coffee or hot chocolate after the ceremony. The wedding might have been mostly homemade and do-it-yourself, but the careful planning that went into every detail resulted in a magical setting that was truly timeless and altogether unforgettable. And while Lisa and Ryan were engaged on a tropical beach, they were married in a winter wonderland.

looking the best IN YOUR DRESS
BODY T YPE:
HOURGLASS
The hourglass shape is the ideal to strive for, so if you’ve got it have some fun showing it off. You’ll look good in most dresses, but avoid dresses with an empire-waist, because you don’t want to look bulky by hiding your waist. Although A-line dresses flatter most people, they can prove to be a hit or miss with your body type.

If you’re round you want to create the illusion of a waist and create curves at your bodice and neckline. Try a ball gown, an A-line with a halter top, or a slenderizing deep V neckline which will draw the eyes towards the vertical. You may want to avoid trumpet styles which will place emphasis where you’re widest.

If your shoulders are broad you want to try to offset them with a fuller skirt and by highlighting your waistline with a ballgown. A mermaid or trumpet cut will help accentuate your hips. Finding the dress can be difficult, but if you give yourself time, keep an open mind, and try on a variety of different styles you’ll find the one for you. Knowing the general types of dresses that work best for you will help, especially since your body type won’t change even if you aim to lose or gain weight before your big day. Top 5 Reasons to Choose OMG! Cupcakes for Your Wedding or Special Occasion 1. QUALITY
OMG! Cupcakes are baked fresh, from scratch, using only quality ingredients! You REALLY can taste the difference! We bake the day of your wedding or occasion, which guarantees freshness! Traditional wedding cakes often must be baked days in advance in order to allow time to decorate.
2. VARIETY
OMG! Cupcakes come in many different flavors and colors from the frosting, to the cake itself. They can be dressed up with sprinkles, edible flowers or detailed work! They offer versatility and can easily be tied into the theme of your wedding or occasion. With a variety of flavors, each guest can choose their favorite!

780-539-5288 Voted BEST New Business 2011 & Best Bakery 2013!
Every batch... from scratch!
3. AFFORDABLE
OMG! Cupcakes are a very cost effective alternative to the traditional wedding cake with absolutely nothing lost in elegance! The portion size of a cupcake is most often larger too!
4. CONVENIENT
Cupcakes are individually wrapped so there’s no need for reception staff to plate up slices, no need for plates or forks, no worrying about cutting a cake. They are easy to transport and easy for guests to take home. They can even be gift boxed and used as party favors.
5. LESS WASTE
With cupcakes, there's always enough and little waste. They can be put out as needed, and your guests will actually eat them. Extras can be stored in their containers and kept fresh for the midnight lunch or gift opening the following day, unlike a traditional wedding cake, which once cut, is left to dry out and eventually thrown out.

Old Hollywood decadence has the spotlight in a wedding which pulls inspiration from the 1920s. To create a reception drawn straight out of the Great Gatsby, elegant elements of pearl strands, ostrich plumes, gold, silver and crystal are complemented with the sharp, geometric lines of Art Deco. Everything from the stationary to the bride’s makeup picks up on trends popularized by Roaring Twenties, creating a themed wedding that is all glamour and no gimmick. The impact of contrasting black and white and the pairing of gold and mint work to create a dramatic, sleek scene for the perfect black tie affair.
The groom embodies the period in a classic two button suit, accessorised with a champagne vest, tie, and pocket square.
The period look is followed down to the nails with classic red, painted with half moons. The Alfred Sung 0.77 carat Dia engagement ring includes a diamond jacket.

lifeinsurance
WRITTEN BY:
Scheila Henschel Sunlife Advisor
YO U A N D YO U R N E W FA M I LY
When it comes to buying life insurance,
it’s easy to procrastinate and put off the decision. A partnership, such as a marriage means your financial planning now includes two. You need to develop a financial plan to ensure you and your partner are provided for today and in the future. One of the major advantages of owning life insurance in addition to protecting your new family is that the death benefit you receive from a life insurance policy is tax-free. As you and your spouse enter different stages of life, your life insurance needs may change.
premiums, or cancelling the coverage. The cash value is based on the premiums you’ve paid and grows over time because the insurance company invests those payments at a fixed rate for you. Also, your policy may allow you to take out a loan secured by this cash value. UNIVERSAL LIFE
Term insurance covers a specific period or term. If you pass away during this period, your beneficiary receives the death benefit stated on the policy. The length of the term is important because after the term, you may not be insurable due to a deterioration of your health. If you’re still insurable after the term ends, your premiums will likely increase because you’re older and a higher risk to the insurance company.
Universal life insurance is a form of permanent insurance that provides lifetime protection with lots of flexibility. With universal life, you have a policy fund, which is your cash value and acts like a cash reserve. This reserve holds both your basic payments and any additional lump sum payments you make. Your cost of insurance is deducted from your policy fund and the rest is left to accumulate interest. But unlike a regular permanent plan where your cash value increases at a fixed rate, the cash value of your universal life policy achieves an interest rate that mirrors the performance of the market indexes or managed fund accounts you select to have your policy track.
Premiums are guaranteed and will automatically renew at the end of each term. Even if your health may have deteriorated, your insurance coverage will continue to renew until the expiry. If renewal premiums become too expensive, you can choose to convert your term insurance to permanent insurance.
You don’t pay tax on the interest in your policy fund unless you withdraw it or exceed the maximum tax-exempt limit. Depending on the kind of universal life insurance you purchase, your beneficiary may receive not only the amount of the death benefit (your insurance coverage), but also the amount in your policy fund.
PERMANENT OR WHOLE LIFE INSURANCE
HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?
A permanent life insurance policy covers you for as long as you live, rather than just a specific term.
Many financial experts advise that the total value of all your life insurance policies should equal 5 to 7 times your annual income. If you’re the primary salary earner in your household, you should have coverage that equals 6 to 10 times your annual income. If you’re a young adult with a mortgage and children, your coverage should be to the high end of this range.
TERM INSURANCE
Advisors often recommend that if you’re under a specific age, you should buy permanent insurance as protection against future medical problems. Your premiums will stay the same regardless of your health. A permanent policy typically has a cash value. This is the amount of money you’ll receive if you allow your policy to lapse by not paying the

Your wedding is pending and all the excitement
about your special day is upon you. Along with the dream of your wedding day you have the aspirations of owning a home, having a great vacation, and possibly planning for a family. Now is the time to sit down with your partner and assess your joint financial situation, to plan a budget, start saving, and to have a serious talk about credit.
2 ) L I M I T T H E U S E O F C R E D I T C A R D S : Racking up
a large amount of credit card debt and then paying it off in monthly instalments can hurt your credit score. If there is a balance at the end of the month, this affects your score—credit formulas don’t take into account the fact that you may pay the balance off next month. 3 ) C H E C K C R E D I T L I M I T S : If your lender is slower at re-
As credit has become more and more abundant in our society, your credit report, and thus your credit rating, has become more important in your daily life. Your credit rating affects all aspects of your financial activities when it comes to borrowing money. Your credit rating also has the ability to affect the job you get, the apartment you rent, and even the ability to open a bank account. Your credit report itself is simply a listing of all of your consumer debt. Every time you borrow money, or make a payment on a loan or credit card, the lender reports the information about the transaction to Trans Union and Equifax, Canada’s main credit reporting agencies. In addition to credit information, you will also find liens and judgments on your credit report as well as your address and possibly your work history. A credit score is a number which gives lenders an idea of your lending risk. Credit scores range from 300 to 900; the higher your credit score, the better. The mortgage products and interest rate that you will qualify for are often determined by your credit score. The good news is that your credit report is a working document. This means that you have the ability over time, to repair any damaged credit and increase your credit score. Here are five steps you can use to help attain a speedy credit score boost: 1 ) P A Y D O W N C R E D I T C A R D S : The number one way to
increase your credit score is to pay down your credit cards so you’re only using 30% of your limits. Revolving credit like credit cards seems to have a more significant impact on credit scores than car loans, lines of credit, and so on.
porting monthly transactions, this can have a significant impact on how other lenders may view your file. Ensure everything’s up to date as old bills that have been paid can come back to haunt you. Some financial institutions don’t even report your maximum limits. As such, the credit bureau is left to only use the balance that’s on hand. The problem is, if you consistently charge the same amount each month— say $1,000 to $1,500—it may appear to the credit-scoring agencies that you’re regularly maxing out your cards. The best bet is to pay your balances down or off before your statement periods close. 4 ) K E E P O L D C A R D S . Older credit is better credit. If you stop
using older credit cards, the issuers may stop updating your accounts. As such, the cards can lose their weight in the credit formula and, therefore, may not be as valuable—even though you have had the cards for a long time. You should use these cards periodically and then pay them off. 5 ) D O N ’ T L E T M I S T A K E S B U I L D U P . You should always
dispute any mistakes or situations that may harm your score. If, for instance, a cell phone bill is incorrect and the company will not amend it, you can dispute this by making the credit bureau aware of the situation. One thing that many people do not know is that you have the legal right to obtain a copy of your credit report. A mortgage professional or lender can help you obtain a copy of this report and go through it with you to verify that all of the information is true and correct.
