wed royal style
making it yours in
royal style
Looking to bring home a little of the Royal Wedding style? While much of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the recent wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge might only be available to the monarchy, several elements can be introduced into a couple’s wedding to give it its own royal flair.
Kate (Catherine) Middleton had already been setting fashion trends before she joined the royal family. “She redefined what it is to be a princess,” Shawna Miller of Celebrations & All Things Bridal says of Kate’s choice of gown and accessories. “It used to be all tulle and crinoline and big, puffed sleeves, but she kept it quite simple and elegant. I think that Kate set a more traditional, classy mood that is going to influence a lot of today’s brides.”
The Wedding Gown, by Sarah Burton for the Brit-
ish fashion house Alexander McQueen, both honoured and broke with royal tradition. It featured a nine-foot train, a strapless bodice with hand-sewn, see-through lace sleeves; a nod to the customary tradition of having the bride’s arms covered during a religious service. Its bustle was a bow to the Victorian era.
Kate’s dress has yet to see much demand in these parts. Shawna Miller of Celebrations & All Things Bridal, expects to see more young women wanting gowns like Pippa’s, made of ivory satin-based crepe, with a cowl front and lace trim. Group JS offers reproductions of both gowns that can be ordered at Celebrations & All Things Bridal, Shawna says. Kate wore a veil made of silk tulle and trimmed in hand-embroidered flowers. It was mid-length and featured just a hint of lace trim to complement the gown’s bodice. It was light, airy, feminine, and covered her face upon her arrival. Veils of many lengths are available at most bridal boutiques but can also be made. Local designer Ashley Lett of Provocouture, once featured in Toronto fashion magazines for her stylish re-working of existing dresses and accessories such as veils, will custom design a piece from scratch as well.

The Fascinator.
While Kate did not sport a hat to the wedding, she did hire the edgy British milliner Phillip Treacy as official hat designer for her big day, and has appeared in a series of his creations. She favours the decorative headpieces known as Fascinators which sit afixed to a headband. British royals, including the Queen, love their hats, which can range from smallish feathery numbers to ones the size of dinner plates. Heather Forbes says those looking for stylish headpieces will find some of this country’s hottest examples at her downtown boutique, Forbes and Friends. She’s been carrying one of Canada’s top milliner’s creations for well over a year. Nicole McInnis is a young Toronto designer whose label Oh Dina!, has enjoyed fabulous press in national papers including the National Post and the Globe and Mail. “Her hats are one-of-a-kind works of art” Forbes says of McInnis.
The Party Dress. One royal detail we are already
seeing more of involves changing out of the wedding gown and into another dress for the reception. Kate ditched her three-inch heels for flats, and switched into an elegant white satin evening gown with a circle skirt and diamante detailing around the waist. This elegant party dress by Ella Bridals closely resembles the one Kate Middleton changed into following the formal Royal Wedding ceremony. Sometimes with destination weddings, the bride will take a second dress along for a Trash-the-Dress photography session.

wed royal style The wedding cake,
an eight-tier affair featuring up to 900 iced flowers, was modest by royal standards. Ones in the past have been twice the height. Grande Prairie’s Cakery Cafe features a long list of manytiered wedding cakes, including ones bearing the couple’s initials. A groom’s chocolate buiscut cake, apparently a favourite of Prince Will’s, also made an appearance at the reception. Find the recipe in the Eating Royally cookbook by former Royal Chef, Darren McGrady; or search it out online.
The Bouquet included sprigs of flowers and greenery from around the
UK. One influence might see a local bride including her provincial or birth flower, or something that holds meaning for her family. Marcy’s Flower Boutique in Grande Prairie gets lots of requests for Irish Bells, the large, green, bell flower that for some, symbolizes their Celtic ancestry.
The Jewels. The Cartier Halo tiara the Duchess wore belongs to the Queen. The dazzling headpiece was commissioned by the Duke of
York for his wife, the Queen Mum. It was passed on to her daughter for her 18th birthday. Grande Prairie jeweller Jocelyn Morgan creates unique, sterling silver tiaras which might include freshwater pearls, Swarovski or natural crystals, or gems that reflect the bride’s heritage or birthstone. Like the royal tiara, these too can become heirloom pieces. Kate’s engagement ring, which Charles had once given to Princess Diana, is reportedly worth about $500,000. The 18 karat sapphire alone is worth $300,000, and is surrounded by 14 small diamonds in a cluster setting. Jamina’s Jewellers of Grande Prairie offers a surprisingly affordable replica, featuring a smaller oval blue saphire surrounded by 14 diamonds on a 10 karat white gold band. Kate’s elegant drop earrings were created by designer Robinson Pelham and feature the oakleaf and acorn motif of Kate’s new family crest. They were a gift from Duchess Catherine’s parents, Carol and Michael Middleton. Janina’s also offers these 14 karat white gold round diamond-embellished drop earrings as a close replica of Kate’s. The royal wedding band itself was fashioned from the last of an ounce of Welsh gold that had gone into both Queen Elizabeth’s and the Queen Mum’s rings. Similarly, rings might include elements mined locally, or ones that have been used in a family ring.

the royal wedding watchers are stillcharmed Shawna Miller shows up for an interview arms laden
with memorabilia, including Will and Kate masks, matching Will and Kate cologne/perfume bottles, and British newspapers printed on the very day of what is surely the most popular wedding of the century. She’s mad at herself for having forgotten the Will and Kate teabags and a special commemorative plate, but shows off a surprisingly up-close cell phone shot of the bride heading by limo to Westminster Abbey to marry Will, Prince of Wales, son of Charles and the late Diana, and grandson of Queen Elizabeth II. “We got really, really close,” declares Miller, who, even months after the event, still brims with awe at the whole experience. Accompanied by her mother-in-law Arlene Miller, and colleague (and native UK resident) Maria Desmarais, Shawna flew to London to witness in person what two billion caught worldwide on television and the internet. The event dazzled monarchists, romantics and would-be brides everywhere, which bodes well for both Millers, as Shawna owns Grande Prairie’s Celebrations & All Things Bridal, and Arlene owns a local rental and decor store Parties and Wishes Unlimited. Arlene bought herself a fascinator, a fancy, often feathery-looking fixture attached to a thin headband or small headpiece that so many sported at the wedding. Her other souvenirs of the special day included four Kate Barbie Dolls, and a set of royal garden gnomes, which caused a bit of a stir in Calgary when her carry-on bag contents were scrutinized by airport security. Questioned about the hollow figurines, which are sometimes used to smuggle drugs and other illegal contents, Arlene replied in her best impression of a British accent: “Didn’t everyone who went to the royal wedding bring back garden gnomes?”
In order to properly acclimatize themselves, the three women arrived in London on April 26, three days prior to the event. They found a city awash in Will and Kate kitsch, some of it tasteful, like Buckingham’s official store full of plates and chinawear, and some not so. But the mood was high and people were friendly and excited. British flags flew everywhere, and adorned all manner of clothing, from t-shirts to headbands. Campers had set up tents around Westminster Abbey ensuring a frontline-view of the wedding entourage as it entered the church. Bright and early the morning of the wedding, the trio made it to their spot alongside the Palace by 7am. The route from Buckingham Palace along the road known as ‘the Mall’ to Westminster Abbey, was blocked off, with 5,000 police on location to keep the peace. “When you were on the streets watching, it was quite orderly,” Shawna notes, adding the estimated one million onlookers “were spread out over a long distance. Barricades were set up and we couldn’t move, so we didn’t get onto the Mall, but anywhere in London, you could stand and take in the mood. There were big screens in Hyde Park and Trafalgar Square, and the Mall was beautifully done up in bunting.” A lingering surprise for Arlene is how many people still ask to see the limo picture both she and Shawna have saved on their phones. “It is something that transcends age, gender, and lifestyle,” she says of people’s fascination with this wedding. “It doesn’t matter who I am showing it to, everyone around is straining their neck to see it, from a 50-year-old man to a young girl.” “When you think back, you really have to pinch yourself,” Arlene says today. “What a moment in history! And we were there.”

bouquet for your day Today’s couples often choose their
wedding flowers for reasons other than those dictated by tradition. In ancient times, a bride would carry strong smelling herbs and spices to ward off evil spirits. In Rome, floral garlands historically signified new life and the hope of fertility; while in Greece, ethnic tradition would have the bride carrying ivy as a symbol of never ending love. Bouquets in Victorian times took on an additional meaning as each blossom had its own purpose; even a message could be sent with flowers.

Now, the bridal party is most likely to choose a wedding flower because they love the bloom or its colour; only occasionally taking into consideration a family or ethnic tradition, or the flower’s symbolic meaning. According to Vickie Zatko, the owner of Marcy’s Flowers in Grande Prairie, a bride will sometimes ask that a specific flower be included in her bouquet as a tribute to her mother or grandmother’s arrangement.
P R E T T Y I N P I N K . Showstopping Asiatic Lilies with collared Tai Leaves.
E L E G A N C E I N W H I T E . Peonies and freesias create a stunning, classic wedding bouquet.
Gerberas are popular for their wide variety of colour, while wedding roses, signifying ‘true love’ dating back to Victorian times, are still included in bouquets today. Other recent favourites include greens and green flowers, tiger lilies, spider moms, and lately, peonies. A recent trend in styles involves a smaller, round bouquet with hand tied stems replacing the traditional cascade of flowers. This more compact arrangement is more versatile, as the bouquet can be easily set in a vase at the reception and used as a decorative element after the ceremony.
TRADITION IS A BEAUTIFUL T H I N G . Red and

uniqueness resides in the details
C H R I S T I N A & T Y R E L L V E Z I N A Married July 31st, 2010
His dad and her mom used to date, so when their
parents decided to matchmake, Christina and Tyrell almost refused. They’re glad they didn’t. Two and a half years later, Tyrell secretly set up a video camera and called Christina away from pulling weeds so he could propose. She laughs about her candid camera moment in which she ripped off her gardening glove to accept the ring. They wanted an outdoor wedding with a vintage chic feel. The Granaries on Bear Mountain, five kilometres southwest of downtown Dawson Creek, captured that design aesthetic, so they booked it immediately. Christina did all her own planning, finding ideas on some wedding blogs she could adapt to her situation.
Handcrafted teal birds topped the colourful cake, and the bird motif showed up on the invitations, a welcome sign and seating plan cards (displayed on clotheslines strung in a large frame). Smaller frames holding personally-designed signs designated guestbook, gift and other tables. Customized rubber stamps branded everything. Even pens were individualized by being wrapped in ribbon and hemp string. Christina found several unique items on etsy.com, but also sourced things locally. Centrepiece bouquets were nestled in vintage blue canning jars borrowed from Dawson Creek’s Pioneer Museum and set on circles of wood that Tyrell cut from a tree he had to fell in their yard. Smaller canning jars held citronella votive candles to discourage bugs. Taller, slender log cuts with slits held the menus.

Heat enveloped the wedding day, so the decorated fans on the guest seats proved useful. The bride walked up an aisle lined by flower petals and joined her groom inside a heart drawn by more petals. Paper cones resting on aisle seats provided more flower petals for guests to shower on the newlyweds after the ceremony.
fill-in-the-blank response cards which were displayed in an album at the reception for everyone to enjoy. Christina’s camera was set up in front of a backdrop to create a photo booth, complete with cute and campy props. Hand-stamped bags at a candy bar allowed guests to create their own mix of sweet memories.
The monochromatic colour scheme of many weddings didn’t appeal to Christina so she chose neutral dresses for the bridesmaids, each individually styled, to highlight colourful bouquets and accessories. Her goal was to incorporate a summery feel through a range of vibrant colours, primarily teal, fuchsia and peach.
Even the dance proved unique. Because Christina’s father is deceased, the newlyweds both danced with their respective mothers. Then they incorporated a Filipino tradition called the money dance, in which guests clipped money to the bride’s and groom’s attire in what proved to be a good-humoured competition to see who could collect the most.
Christina and Tyrell encouraged guest participation. Creating their own invitations allowed for personalized phrasing and included fun,
The result was a wedding that combined rustic and vintage elements, while embodying a spirit of fun.

planned to perfection
L E X I & G R A N T R I X Married July 31st, 2010
A perfect day is what every bride hopes for. The logistics of
planning such an event become more difficult as the guest list grows. Enter the wedding planner. She handled everything from recommending venues to establishing ceremony etiquette to overseeing the decorating, even recommending what to carry in the bridal party’s survival kit (Tylenol, etc.). Lexi raves over her planner’s efficiency and how relatively stress-free she made the whole process. Long before any plans, there was just a girl meeting a boy at a hockey team’s party. Lexi was sixteen to Grant’s seventeen. High school sweethearts, they dated for several years beyond graduation. When Lexi was studying at the Aveda Institute in Las Vegas, Grant came to visit and popped the question in her condo. Their engagement was almost twenty months long, which facilitated planning.
As soon as the date was set, they booked the TEC Centre, one of the only facilities in Grande Prairie that could host a reception of almost 500 guests. The night of the wedding it looked nothing like an exhibit hall, having been transformed into a wonderland of white backdrops, linens, chair covers and Chinese lanterns — perfect foils for jeweltoned lighting and engraved glasses that lit up in different colours. The centrepieces of white vases with crystal trees reflected the colours like diamonds. The effect was classic and dazzling while still retaining an air of intimacy. Dresses proved challenging. Lexi loved the process of creating a custommade gown, but the Italian silk and lace took eight months to arrive. The six bridal party dresses were three colours, all jewel-toned, and individually styled like evening gowns to blend in with the ambiance. One

design had to be sleuthed out in Las Vegas. Because Lexi isn’t much for flowers, the bouquets were equally unique: feathers surrounding calla lilies. Another challenge was the number of guests. They visited with outof-towners at a barbeque the night before the wedding. After the ceremony, they skipped the traditional receiving line. Instead, guests formed two rows outside the church, an aisle for the bridal party to pass through, amid cheers, to a stretch limo. They retired to a relative’s home for photos that incorporated classic architectural elements and an intimate natural setting.
was Lexi’s dog, nattily dressed in formal wear. To honour part of Grant’s heritage, they incorporated a Filipino tradition called the Lazzo ceremony, symbolic of unity, in which a double rosary (of pearls in this case) fashioned in a figure-8, are draped over the bride and groom. The least traditional aspect? Definitely the music, Lexi explained. She compiled a wide-ranging playlist for the church, mostly classic rock love songs that set a happy, upbeat tone. That’s what she wanted for the whole day: classy without being stuffy, and above all, jubilant celebration. Which explains her blue cowboy boots, perfect for dancing the night away.
Lexi and Grant had their ceremony in the People’s Church to accommodate some untraditional elements they wanted. Their ring bearer

never socialized. Several years later, Devon and Shayne met through mutual friends, and this time, it made an impression. Devon fondly described attending a Jack Johnson concert in Vancouver with Shayne and some friends. During a favourite song, Constellations, he proposed. Music is vital to her life, she explained, so it was touching he waited for that moment. After some time to enjoy their new commitment they began discussing dates and decided two things: they wanted a short time-line so planning couldn’t become an obsession, and their watchword was simplicity. One simplification was eliminating the bridal party. (Their mothers were the signing witnesses.) Devon’s young nephews carried pennants
during the processional that read “here comes the bride,” but the third bearer darted ahead of his cousin so their message became “here the bride comes.” It was part of the joy of including family, something hugely important to them. Devon’s mom helped with planning, errands and creating Raku pottery for wedding favours. Shayne’s mom designed the invitations and drawyour-own picture postcard RSVPs, later displayed at the reception. A grandmother prepared the flowers. An aunt made a personalized scrapbook-style guestbook. During the ceremony, each immediate family member brought a stone and placed it to create a circle around the bride and groom. Devon has kept the stones. Their officiant personalized the ceremony by weaving in their life stories. Because every guest was special to the couple, Devon and Shayne penned handwritten, individual

notes to everyone that were included with the favours. The Centre for Creative Arts was the natural choice as a venue, both because Devon’s mom volunteers there and because of its historical significance, which fit with their “vintage nature” theme. For centrepieces, Devon scrounged “bits & bobs” from her house, from friends and family, and where necessary, from thrift and antique shops, to create arrangements of glass jar terrariums, candles and flowers (in shades of pink because Devon loves that colour in nature). Shayne’s chainsaw prowess provided birchbark stumps positioned along the aisle and arranged at the front with a birch arbor he made.
ment using a trail as their “aisle.” That private time before the ceremony helped them to get centred and relieved any stress so they could fully enjoy the celebration. Taking the pictures beforehand also facilitated the flow of having an evening ceremony, which they wanted because it’s a romantic time of day.
Being nature enthusiasts, Devon and Shayne wanted outdoor pictures. South Bear Creek provided a rural feeling inside the city. The photo session happened before the ceremony so they captured a first-look mo-

They wanted a wedding that produced minimal waste, so avoided paper and plastic. Even the birch is being recycled: the stumps are being used in an art exhibit and will then become firewood, and the arbor will become the entrance to Devon & Shayne’s garden.

Top 5 Reasons to Choose OMG! Cupcakes for Your Wedding or Special Occasion 1. QUALITY
OMG! Cupcakes are baked fresh, from scratch, using only quality ingredients! You REALLY can taste the difference! We bake the day of your wedding or occasion, which guarantees freshness! Traditional wedding cakes often must be baked days in advance in order to allow time to decorate.
2. VARIETY
OMG! Cupcakes come in many different flavors and colors from the frosting, to the cake itself. They can be dressed up with sprinkles, edible flowers or detailed work! They offer versatility and can easily be tied into the theme of your wedding or occasion. With a variety of flavors, each guest can choose their favorite!
3. AFFORDABLE 10803 – 100 Street, Grande Prairie, AB info@omgcupcakes.ca
780-539-5288 Every batch... from scratch!
OMG! Cupcakes are a very cost effective alternative to the traditional wedding cake with absolutely nothing lost in elegance! The portion size of a cupcake is most often larger too!
4. CONVENIENT
Cupcakes are individually wrapped so there’s no need for reception staff to plate up slices, no need for plates or forks, no worrying about cutting a cake. They are easy to transport and easy for guests to take home. They can even be gift boxed and used as party favors.
5. LESS WASTE
With cupcakes, there's always enough and little waste. They can be put out as needed, and your guests will actually eat them. Extras can be stored in their containers and kept fresh for the midnight lunch or gift opening the following day, unlike a traditional wedding cake, which once cut, is left to dry out and eventually thrown out.

a special
thank you
Wedding favours have been a tradition
of weddings for many centuries in many cultures. They are a symbolic thank you from the bride and groom to the guests for sharing their special occasion with them. Originally, favours were an extravagance afforded by wealthy European upper class. They began as small fancy boxes named bonbonniere by the French and were made of crystal, porcelain or gold, often encrusted with precious stones to hold bonbons or other candies. People of modest means began to adopt the tradition by selecting simple treats as gifts. Many cultures believed that the bride and groom were associated with good luck and everything they touched would be charmed. By giving a gift, they were passing this blessing on to others. The custom in the Middle East was to prepare a small gift of five sugar coated almonds, called confetti, wrapped in delicate fabric or lace and tied with ribbon representing fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness. The Jordan almonds, a combination of almond and candy signify the bitter sweetness of marriage. Today, wedding favours vary according to culture, budgets, the bride and groom’s interests and theme of the wedding. The options are endless, but the wedding favour ultimately provides the couple a chance to show their personality and really consider what might delight their guests.
Make it Meaningful
Rather then purchasing hundreds of trinkets, make a donation to your favorite charity on behalf of your guests. They will feel good leaving your wedding knowing they have helped a good cause. The Alberta Cancer Foundation will even provide you with custom-designed Thank You cards for each place setting.
Homemade from the Heart
There is no better way to say thank you to your guests (and save money) than to give them a taste of Grandma’s raspberry jam, Mom’s dill pickles or your favorite cookie recipe and mix. Miniature paintings or artwork are a special way to mark each guests place at the reception.

Your Favorite Things
A popular wedding favour trend is to share something you love with your guests. A golf-crazy couple can order logo’d balls and hockey fans can customize pucks for about $2.50 each. Car enthusiasts might like personalized air-fresheners for under $2, or, if you’re into the country life, you can’t go wrong with lucky horseshoes.
THERE ARE MANY REASONS YOU MIGHT CHOOSE A PA RT I CU L A R I T E M TO T H A N K YO U G U E STS W I T H . HERE ARE A FEW TO CONSIDER OR INSPIRE...
A Tasty Treat
You won’t mind taking these leftover favours home! A popcorn machine rents for $150 from Parties & Wishes Unlimited in Grande Prairie, or set up a candy bar with all of your favorite treats. Decorate paper bags, cones or order themed napkins to make it extra special.
Make it Personal
The traditonal embroidered, engraved or labelled favour comes in thousands of shapes and sizes these days. Visit Sportswear Plus in Grande Prairie and browse through their inspiring catalogues. These fun and useful beverage Koozies can be purchased for about $2 each.

Go Green!
For the environmentally conscious couple, consider tree saplings from around $3, ‘lucky’ bamboo available at Marcy’s Flower Boutique for about $1.50 each, or DIY packages of your favorite flower seeds. Not only will these favours add to the eco-friendly decor, but your guests will appreciate your sustainable choice.

TIPS
Plan ahead. Prior to deciding on your destination, some places may require a minimum amount of days in the Country prior to the wedding, blood tests or your personal documents such as birth certificate and passport to be translated. Confirm. Always ensure you have the confirmation of your wedding date prior to putting your deposit down on your travel arrangements. Once the deposit is made it is 100% non-refundable and non-changeable. Keep in mind. Typically July through October is hurricane season and sometimes May and June can receive more rain in some of your tropical destinations.
Let AMA Travel make your destination wedding dreams come true. We’ll help you choose the wedding package and the destination and let us handle all the details. • Complimentary airline seat upgrade for bride and groom • Complimentary room upgrade for bride and groom • FREE personalized wedding invitations • FREE advance seat selection • Private airport-to-hotel transfers • Additional group package savings
Be flexible. Sometimes moving your travel date by a week or two can significantly lower your per person cost especially if you avoid long weekends and school holidays like spring break and Easter.

Uniquely you locations for your destination wedding
Imagine exchanging your wedding vows in a field of lavender in BC, or in an Italian
vineyard in the Tuscan sun. How about renting your very own private island in Belize, where you and a lucky few celebrate in the most exclusive, tropical style? Modern day brides everywhere are choosing to forgo the local church, hotel or hall reception, to marry in a place they’d only ever dreamed of. And the possibilities are endless: their wish to emulate a Greek island wedding like Amanda Seyfried’s big screen nuptials in Mama Mia is no longer just a fantasy. Travel consultants all maintain that destination weddings can be both unique and affordable, and, with help, can happen just about anywhere in the world, often with less stress than a local affair would entail.
Enjoy the luxury of your own private island in Central America’s Belize! Swim, kayak, snorkel, beachcomb, or just relax the day away in your veranda hammock overlooking the beach. Coco Plum Island Resort offers an intimate Caribbean style wedding

Lindsay Hodgson, Destination Wedding Specialist for V the Vacation Store, pulls out the elegant Ensemble International Travel Group Destination Vows magazine, whose pages feature several exquisite travel-to wedding locations. If your dream marriage involves having a private island all to yourself, Coco Plum Resort in Belize can make it come true in exclusive comfort and style. Its ocean front cabanas and private, white sandy beaches are available for two to 20 people, and it can arrange a civil marriage ceremony that is recognized worldwide. “Our role is the middleman,” Hodgson says of the destination travel advisor. “We are there to clarify what the bride wants and then work with her and the chosen location to make her feel comfortable with it all.” There’s an unforgettable experience to be had in one of Tuscany, Italy’s best known wineries. Avignonesi’s Fattoria Le Cappezine is like a small ancient village and has both its own church and a top class restaurant that features traditional Tuscan food alongside its own award winning wines. Civil ceremonies performed in Italy are recognized throughout the world, and you are only required to register the certificate in your home country.
Paperwork for most destination weddings is handled by the local consultant in under a day. Another option is to marry in a civil ceremony here, and have the destination’s wedding be symbolic. A minimum of eight people can organize a custom-fit sailing trip around Greece and arrange for their own Mama Mia movie-style moment. V the Vacation Store offers a Mediterranean cruise on a small, 20 person vessel with sails, allowing a wedding ensemble to take in such beautiful wonders as St. Mark’s Square in Venice, or Turkey’s famous Blue Mosque. The Vacation Store has travel associates overseas who will be on hand to guide you as well. Bride and groom might choose the action-thrill-of-a-lifetime from a series of Thailand nuptials, where dozens of couples are wed while dangling over the sea, or underwater, or upon an elephant. Or they might fancy a restored 5-star castle near Rome that sits atop a spectacular circuit of turrets and walls. “We can do it pretty much anywhere,” Hodgson says of the wedding adventure. For closer-to-home trips, you can exchange vows in a fragrant field of lavender at the Okanagan Lavender Herb Farm, near Kelowna, BC. Rows of lemon balm, verbena, roses, lavender and rosemary provide a

picturesque and aromatic backdrop in this informal and intimate setting. Another BC location, Summerhill Pyramid Winery, features stunning views of both its vineyards and Lake Okanagan. Couples can host a wedding reception in its uniquely designed wine cellar terrace, whose pyramid structure is said to produce the same potent positive energy as its Egyptian prototype. In a bid to keep their wedding stress-free and luxurious, one bride and groom chose to elope at the gorgeous hide-away setting of Rockwater Secret Cove Resort, north of Sechelt, BC, on the Sunshine Coast. Quinn (McGowan) Berry, says the Resort’s elopement package took care of every detail, from witnesses and marriage commissioner to a romantic four-course meal and a rose petal turn-down service. The resort also provided Quinn and Brad with a photographer and a couple’s massage at its waterfront spa. The ceremony took place on the deck of their lavishly-appointed Tenthouse, a canvas-covered, deluxe suite, hidden among the arbutus trees and overlooking the Malaspina Strait. “It was absolutely perfect,” Quinn says today. “It was so laid back, and so romantic. We just showed up, and had a great four days with no stress.”
Marlin Travel consultant Caroline Connelly agrees that just about anything you might imagine as a venue is possible. She once arranged for a mountaintop wedding, where “even the minister wore skis.” Connelly, who has travelled extensively herself, is always scouting out possible venues for her clients, whether it be an opportunity to marry on one of the Cook Islands off of New Zealand, or a castle in Scotland. “There is an over-water bungalow with glass floors in Tahiti that you can stand on and see all the fish; or a resort in Jamaica, where, if you are into gymnastics, and people flying through the air, they’ll set up a trapeze.” The growing popularity of exchanging vows elsewhere also affects the would-be entourage, Connelly notes. It becomes a holiday with a purpose. Sometimes though, the sheer number of options makes it tough for those on the receiving end. “There are so many destination weddings these days, that people are being invited to two or three in a year, and must choose which to attend,” she says, adding that for this reason, the sooner the locale and date are finalized, and invitations sent out, the better.
Lavender Fields Overlooking Lake Okanagan O K A N A G A N L AV E N D E R H E R B FA R M , KELOWNA, BC
Exchange your wedding vows amidst fragrant fields of purple haze in this rural herb farm in South Kelowna, British Columbia. Gardens of ornamental grasses and aromatic herbs including lavender, rosemary, thyme, and basil are the backdrop for this intimate experience. The ceremony-only location offers visitors a serene, outdoor lake vista setting, away from all the hustle and crowds. Its wedding package options include use of a quaint cottage for bridal party preparations and a post-ceremony toast with such exotic drinks as lavender spritzers, lavender lemonade, and homemade lavender ice cream.

Still, for all those once-in-a-lifetime, unique offerings, destination specialists maintain that all-inclusive locations like Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic remain among the top destinations for Grande Prairie brides when they first set foot in the travel agency. Especially for the price-conscious, these are often deemed the most affordable. Even so, there is plenty to consider. Barb Metituk, manager of AMA Travel in Grande Prairie, says that upon discussing a client’s choice, a destination specialist may foresee problems the bride has overlooked. “There are language barriers, and food selection,” Metituk stresses. “Some destinations have been doing this much longer, while others are still developing (as wedding locations).” “Not everyone is a Dominican Republic client,” Metituk gives as an example. “It’s the counsellor’s job to consider both the bride’s desires and needs and those of her guests - some of whom might have health issues, or be fussy eaters - and help her choose the destination that fits.” Cruise weddings are gaining momentum because they satisfy a wide range of needs, Metituk notes. Ceremonies, which for a time were not allowed onboard, are now permitted on many vessels, offering yet another form of the all-inclusive wedding venue.
“Cruises have become very popular for those wanting activities and guaranteed good food, and usually have a doctor on board,” she says. Perhaps Metituk’s biggest selling point for the all-inclusive wedding destination has to do with what it is not. As a mother of a bride who attended such a wedding, she can, with first-hand experience, attest that it is not stressful. “We met for half an hour with the planner the day after we arrived” she says of her resort wedding experience. That was it. The rest, except for a few hand-written notes to guests that she and the mother-in-law jotted out on paper while leisurely seated on the patio, was all taken care of by the staff. The day after the big affair, she was out on the beach enjoying the sun. With that in mind, a good destination wedding consultant plays an integral role in making a wedding a stress-free event for not only the bride but all those travelling with her. For that reason alone, the travel company is an invaluable resource.
