welcome

WELCOME TO THE SPRING ISSUE OF... AT HOME IN BARNOLDSWICK At last spring is here and Barnoldswick is in bloom. As ever this edition is filled with offerings from many local retailers as well as our ever popular what’s on guide to keep you busy and entertained as we move towards the long summer days. In this latest edition look out for the new feature written by Andrew Stephenson our local MP, as well as our old favourites including the ticket giveaway and the Barnoldswick news which features the pride of Barnoldswick awards; celebrating the work that local individuals and organisations have done in the town. I would like to pass on a thank you to all the residents that joined in a day of action organised by ‘Barnoldswick in Bloom’. Their positive work in improving our town does not go unnoticed, and the planting of daffodils seem to have given a golden glow to Barnoldswick in this year’s spring sunshine. Finally a special note of thanks to all those who have supported this edition; To all of our advertisers both old and new and to those who have contributed to its content, thank you in helping to make it yet another great edition. Best Wishes

GO WILD AND POTTY! Saturday 14th April

Kids, families and everybody can go wild and potty at Barnoldswick in Bloom’s next community action day on 14th April! The group will be going Wild about Wildflowers to launch this year’s Barnoldswick in Bloom initiative and commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by sowing wildflowers at Valley Gardens. The Royal Horticultural Society has provided a mix of annual cornfield seeds which will be sown, together with a Jubilee mix of red, white and blue wildflowers provided by Pendle Council. Flowers include Corn Poppy, Corn Marigold, Corn Chamomile, Corncockle and Cornflower. A large area of seeds will be sown in the area in front of Far East View. As well as wildflower sowing, you can get your hands dirty and go potty by helping to ‘pot on’ 4,000 plants which will be planted out in front of Holy Trinity Church later in early summer. The potting on will be carried out under cover, so whatever the weather, there’ll be plenty to do. There will also be clean up action in the park during the event - bring your wellies if you want to help tidy the beck! Any groups or organisations willing to care for some of the plants potted on during the day until they are planted out as summer bedding are invited to contact the secretary of the bloom group at the number or email address above. Barnoldswick in Bloom is for Everybody! If you would like to support improving our town, please turn up anytime during the event, or contact Barnoldswick in Bloom to see how else you can get involved. Green fingers are not required for Bloom group activities, but gloves and sensible footwear and clothing is desirable! Further information from Bloom secretary Ken Hartley tel 817535 or email kenknhrt@hotmail.co.uk

2 YEARS ON AND GOING STRONG!! On establishing the business 2 years ago a few Barlickers gave me a few words of advice. “A local business based in Barnoldswick grows by reputation.” and another said; “Kick one Barlicker and they all limp” Having established our business only 2 years ago we have used these quotes as our mantra and aimed to provide a business based on great customer service. We have continued to grow our patient base receiving numerous recommendations and referrals to us. We do not do any ‘buy one get one free’ or offers like the big companies do. We are not concerned with how much is in your wallet, our sole concern is your eyes; eye health and having appropriate vision correction. Seeing the same optician every year be it James Bontoft or Colin Holdsworth is something that a lot of people appreciate and has drawn a lot of people to us. We have an experienced team with over 100 years combined working in the optical industry. Our frame and service range continues to expand every year. Eye tests at home, funded by the NHS, continue to be very well received and are a growing part of our business. So if you feel your current eye care provider isn’t up to scratch, why not come see what we can do for you. 12

Police Commissioners. I often meet with Ministers to talk about plans to reform the police, open up public services and give more power to communities. Under the previous Government, the police were micromanaged. Whitehall even gave instructions on how the police should answer phone calls. Resources were wasted while police officers did paperwork instead of fight crime. This Government is giving communities the power to hold the police to account. It has launched police.uk, making it easier for people to access information about crime locally. It is also bringing in elected police and crime commissioners. On 15th November, commissioners for each of the 41 forces in England and Wales will be elected. Chief Constables will answer to their local commissioner, who will answer directly to voters. For the first time, the public will have a say over policing priorities, instead of policing decisions being made behind closed doors. Some people worry that electing police commissioners will politicize the police force. I understand these worries, but I am assured that the operational independence of the police will be protected. Police forces will remain free to make arrests and pursue investigations without interference. Elected police commissioners are the best people to keep the police independent because, unlike bureaucrats, are will answer directly to local voters and not to politicians who appointed them. Similar reforms have been successful in the Netherlands. In a small community outside Rotterdam, the police are allocated 20 hours a week where local people decide what the police do resulting in a massive reduction of crime. In Pendle, we will be electing a commissioner for Lancashire. They will have an important job to do, and I encourage local candidates to come forward. I hope everyone will get out and vote on 15th November. Electing commissioners will increase accountability, performance and give us a voice in the way our force is managed.

20 YEARS WOW! I can’t believe how the past 20 years have flown. On my first day in business here in Barnoldswick, I gave out Daffodils and I thought it was only fitting that I should do the same all these years later; one of my first customers called me an “off cumden” I had no idea what this meant then, but someone did explain. It hasn’t been easy, with the hardest part being having to get up at 3.30am driving to the Manchester Flower Market then straight to the shop; and not leaving for home until around 6.30 - 7.00pm. Thank goodness things have changed with the arrival of Mellissa who came for just 6 weeks and is now in her 8th year. She is now head florist and shop manager and then there is Sam an excellent all-rounder and creative florist. My job and business have given me some great opportunities; Not only have I worked for the BBC, the business has taken me throughout Europe, the USA, Hong Kong and Iceland. The most challenging was demonstrating to fellow florists in Reykjavik, however more favourable was creating floating swimming pool arrangements in California! I suppose really I could write a book of my strange and wonderful experiences, it would probably be more of a sit-com though. Barnoldswick is where I am in business; the people here are fantastic and there is really nowhere quite like it. We have a great community and a great community spirit. I would like to thank all my customers old and new, and to those who have yet to experience our quality and service - we look forward to meeting you too. Here’s to the next 20 years.
