Zara Phillips Launches Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship At The Royal Windsor Horse Show Zara Phillips announced a new engineering scholarship programme at the recent Royal Windsor Horse Show. The Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship will provide a £9,000 bursary to three female students or apprentices who would like to explore a career or further studies in engineering. In addition the winners will be provided with mentoring support from both Land Rover senior engineers and WISE representatives. In launching the campaign Zara spoke about how inspiring both her Grandmother and her mother were in encouraging young women to consider a career in engineering. The Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, joined the ATS at her own insistence in 1945, aged 18. Having enlisted as a Subaltern, the Queen progressed by the end of the war to the rank of Junior Commander after completing course No. 1 at the Mechanical Training Centre of the ATS. As part of her training to become a fully qualified driver, the then Princess had to learn how to fix a car, including changing the wheel and basic engine maintenance. Princess Anne is the patron of WISE which helps organisations to inspire women and girls to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as pathways to exciting and fulfilling careers. Talking about the campaign, Zara said: “The UK has a rich heritage of women in engineering, encouraged by the success of the ATS. I’m delighted to be supporting the Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship which provides young women with the opportunity to progress their career. In the Three Day Eventing world, I compete equally with men and enjoy the challenge. In fact, on the Olympic team there was actually only one man and we all made a great team. There are equal opportunities for both men and women to succeed in engineering and now is an exciting time to get involved.” The funding for the Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship has come from the 2012 MacRobert Award, which was presented to Land Rover for the Range Rover Evoque. The MacRobert Award is the premier UK award for engineering. The judges credited the ingenuity of the Land Rover engineers who succeeded in packaging key components under the vehicle floor, “with millimetre accuracy.”

The scholarship is the first key activity to be announced using the funding from the award. The remainder of the fund will be used to expand Land Rover’s Inspiring Tomorrow’s Engineers 4x4 schools challenge into a global initiative - allowing schools around the world the opportunity to explore engineering as a career option. Land Rover Supports Ben Saunders’ Bid To Complete Captain Scott’s Historic Antarctic Expedition Land Rover is pleased to be a leading partner in the Scott Expedition, a mission to retrace and complete Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s ill-fated Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole. British explorer and Land Rover Global Brand Ambassador Ben Saunders, accompanied by professional adventurer Tarka L’Herpiniere, aims to be the first to accomplish the return polar journey, just over a century on from Scott’s heroic attempt. The 1,800 mile trek will be the longest unsupported polar expedition yet made. Equally, it will set new benchmarks in the use of high-tech digital equipment that will enable the pair to send film, images and social media updates direct from Antarctica. It is the latest challenge for Ben, one of Britain’s most accomplished and experienced explorers. He has been a Land Rover Global Brand Ambassador since 2008 and was supported by the company in another remarkable expedition he made that year, a bid to break the speed record for a solo ski journey to the North Pole. With the history-making Scott Expedition, he will go further to demonstrate the spirit of “Above and Beyond” that’s at the heart of the Land Rover brand. The expedition has the support of Captain Scott’s family too, with his grandson, Falcon Scott as one of its patrons. As a 21st century explorer, Ben has much more sophisticated equipment and technology to help him reach his goal than Scott and his team could ever have imagined, from advanced clothing materials and equipment, to communications devices that can provide instant contact with the outside world and ensure precise geographic location. The world of Land Rover has changed in similar ways in the 65 years since the iconic Series I was created, with continuous advances in design and engineering and high-tech systems giving today’s models even greater off-road capabilities and on-board connectivity. At the same time, Land Rovers have retained at their heart the same essential principle of all-terrain ability that inspired the original, in the same way as Scott’s polar ambition remains central to what Ben Saunders wants to achieve. Although Land Rover vehicles will not play a physical role in Antarctica, they are highly valued by Ben as his transport of choice for all types of occasion - with the versatility to carry all the kit he needs to the remote training areas beyond the Arctic Circle, and take him across the UK on a busy schedule of speaking engagements and personal appearances. At the beginning of July two supreme examples of British engineering, the All-New Range Rover Sport and the legendary Supermarine Spitfire, engaged in a unique duel to measure their off-road mastery. The Range Rover Sport, the fastest production Land Rover to date, representing the latest advances in all-terrain performance was pitted against Britain’s most famous fighter aircraft in a high-speed off-road race along the grass airstrip at the Goodwood Aerodrome in Sussex. The race - the first of its kind at the airfield - involved a straight drag run down and back on the runway, punctuated by a nimble U-turn. It was particularly challenging being conducted on the bumpy grass airfield, notorious for being a low traction surface. The Vickers Supermarine Spitfire lined up for the contest was a 1945-vintage model, piloted by Matt Jones from the Boultbee Flight Academy. Powered by a 1,750bhp V12 Merlin engine, it has a maximum airspeed of 400 mph, and its typical acceleration on takeoff is up to 80mph before the wheels leave the ground, making it a strong contender for victory against the Land Rover. Mike Cross, Jaguar Land Rover’s Chief Vehicle Integrity Engineer, was at the wheel of the All-New Range Rover Sport, a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 model with 510 hp on tap. Even though grass is one of the most challenging terrains on which to gain traction, for both acceleration and breaking, Cross still managed to clock a top speed of 130 mph before braking for the mid-race turn. The turn manoeuvre was helped by the Range Rover Sport’s new Torque Vectoring technology, which contributes to stable and secure cornering by applying appropriate braking to the inside wheels.
